Located in Kyrenia, Bellapais Abbey is a 13th century Gothic monastery with panoramic views. It's home to a museum, restaurant and cafe. The concerts held here during the summer are sublime and the ruins are a beautiful sight.
Positioned between mountains and the sea this place has the right name. Cypress and orange trees in Gothic ambiance. Really eye-catching.

I took a taxi from Kyrenia/Girne as no public transport goes to the monastery. The taxi driver wanted a ludicrously-cheap 40 TL for a 6km drive uphill, so I gave him 50TL. I later walked back as downhill was no problem!
Entrance is 15 TL, which includes a little guide sheet which I found invaluable. I was the only one there. The monastery is very well preserved and there are marvellous views from the mountains.

A very beautiful space to visit. We visited this place during the day and it was a mistake as the temperature was +40 degrees. I advise you to visit the abbey in the late afternoon.
The entrance cost 50 lira for 1 person, but no one checked the tickets.

Bellapais Abbey, a 13th-century monastery in Turkish-controlled Northern Cyprus, was constructed by Canons Regular and overlooks Kyrenia and the Mediterranean sea. Initially named Episcopia, it may have served as a residence for the Bishop of Kyrenia. Occupied by Canons Regular of the Holy Sepulchre, it later faced neglect under the Greek Orthodox Church after the Ottoman conquest in 1571. During British control (1878-1960), the army used it, resulting in bullet holes in the refectory. Now a museum, the abbey hosts a restaurant, cafe, and cultural events, making it a historical and cultural destination.

Beautiful village of Bellapais where this monastery is located. Tickets are 50 Turkish lira, there is a discount for students.
No queues, easy to get in, not many people (we visited on Sunday in November). Beautiful and well preserved remains of the monastery, surrounded by hills.
Highly recommend to visit. Also there are at least 3 cafes/restaurants nearby and they are reasonably priced.

Kyrenia Castle is a large and imposing fortress on the seafront in Kyrenia, Cyprus. It also has a shipwreck museum inside, which contains exhibits about Cyprus' maritime history. The view from the top of the castle is incredible, and it is one of the best values in Cyprus for tourists.
Big Castle in a fantastic location and well worth a visit. Its only 50 try entrance fee and there is lots to see and great views from the ramparts.

This is a great historical attraction however it is very unsafe! Many of the displays have been removed and are empty spaces. The railing is missing in many parts of the wall and there are some walking areas that seem quite flimsy, such as soldered metal grates and parts that have been roofed over. A little investment and pride in this castle would make a big difference.

Girne Castle, also known as Kyrenia Castle, presents itself as a fairly typical castle structure, albeit with a notable feature: its size. While it may not boast the grandiosity of some renowned European castles, Girne Castle compensates with its expansive layout, making it larger than the average fortress of its kind. Additionally, the castle's walls are noticeably thicker, hinting at a robust defense system that would have been crucial during its heyday. Despite lacking the ornate embellishments of more famous castles, Girne Castle's imposing presence and sturdy construction serve as a testament to its historical significance and strategic importance in safeguarding the region. Visitors can explore its ramparts, towers, and inner chambers, gaining insights into the castle's role in the turbulent history of Cyprus. Overall, while Girne Castle may not stand out dramatically in the realm of castle architecture, its sheer size and formidable walls contribute to its allure and make it a worthwhile stop for history enthusiasts and curious travelers alike.

Very nice castle and definitely worth visiting! It has many things to enjoy - the sea, the view, the museum, the architecture, and the history of course. You can walk around the castle once first then enter it. Entrance fee is not too expensive, especially when you paying in Lira instead of Euro. Not very crowded during weekdays. Oh be careful during windy/rainy days though, as it could be kinda dangerous to walk on the top of the castle during such weather. Overall can recommend!

Girne Castle, also known as Kyrenia Castle, stands as a majestic symbol of Cyprus's rich history and heritage, drawing travelers to its ancient walls and storied past. Perched on the shores of the sparkling Mediterranean Sea in the charming town of Girne (Kyrenia), the castle offers visitors a captivating journey through centuries of tumultuous history. Its strategic location and well-preserved architecture provide a fascinating glimpse into Cyprus's Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman periods, making it a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts. Inside the castle, travelers can explore its labyrinthine corridors, climb its ancient towers, and admire breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. However, some travelers may find the entrance fees to be relatively high compared to other attractions in the area, which could be a consideration for budget-conscious visitors. Additionally, the castle's popularity among tourists can lead to overcrowding during peak seasons, detracting from the overall experience for some travelers. Despite these potential drawbacks, Girne Castle remains a captivating testament to Cyprus's enduring legacy and a highlight of any visit to the beautiful island.

The castle is cheap to enter and very well kept. The displays and signage are informative and the access to the roof affords excellent views out to sea and the rest of the town. Well worth the visit.
Ryan Whitlock — Google review
The Castle is a captivating historical site that has witnessed centuries of history. Originally built by the Romans in the 7th century BC, the castle has undergone numerous transformations over the years.
During the Ottoman rule in the 16th century, the castle underwent significant changes, although many of these alterations were later reversed by the British during their rule. Despite these changes, the castle's structure today largely reflects its Venetian-era design.
Visitors to the castle can explore its fortified walls, dungeons, and towers, experiencing firsthand the architectural legacy of the Ottoman Empire in Cyprus. The castle's strategic location overlooking the port of Kyrenia served as a military stronghold and later as a prison during the British colonial period.
One of the highlights of the castle is the Shipwreck Museum, which displays the remains of a Greek merchant ship from the 4th century BC. This well-preserved shipwreck provides valuable insight into ancient maritime trade.
Despite its historical significance, the castle's preservation and organization leave room for improvement, as it is not very well maintained. Additionally, there is a lack of tourist information support to explain the site's rich history. Nonetheless, the Castle stands today as a testament to Cyprus's heritage, showcasing its rich and diverse history of the island.

7th century Byzantine castle, built to fend off Arabs, never taken but surrendered to the Ottomans in 1570, expanded in the Lusignan era, and taken present form under Venetians in the 16th century. British used it as a prison/police academy. Museum, featuring a wrecked 4th century Greek merchant ship, is included in the ticket. Impressive structure, with great views of Girne/Kyrenia and especially of limani/old port, and a little garden café at its centre.

Kyrenia Harbour is the most popular spot in the town for tourists. It's a crescent-shaped port with narrow streets and charming old wooden ships and yachts in its harbour. There are also cafes and restaurants on the waterfront, and a beautiful promenade that leads down to the harbour.
This might be the prettiest place in all of Cyprus.

kyrenia Harbour is a hidden gem that shouldn't be missed. The moment you step foot in this picturesque harbor, you'll be captivated by its timeless beauty. The charming cobblestone streets, colorful fishing boats, and stunning backdrop of the Kyrenia Mountains create a truly magical atmosphere.

Lords Palace Hotel Spa & Casino is a five-star hotel situated in Kyrenia, just 15 minutes walk from the Old Liman promenade. The property features a restaurant, fitness centre, bar and garden.
Very nice hotel, exceptional reception desk service. Whenever we needed anything the request was met with a professional, smiling staff. You can spend your time around the hotel without getting out anywhere thanks to the Bella Marin area. Two big pools (plus a kids' pool) restaurants and bars, all well maintained and good service. The food at the main restaurant was also good, the fact that beverages, including alcoholic ones are included in the basic package is really nice. We will definitely come back here.

We came for one night. The food is rich and delicious. The room is nice and quite ordinary. The service is very unpleasant because no one speaks English. There was a problem with the water temperature. It was impossible to shower.Or the water was icy cold or burning. And could not be explained to them. I probably will not come here again

The hotel has excellent facilities overall, but it's little disappointing that there isn't effective soundproofing at the room. Conversations from nearby rooms were easily audible, leading to difficulty in getting a good night's sleep.
However, the low rating in my review about the service is specifically referring to the hotel's restaurant.
While our booking included breakfast and dinner, we were expecting a curated menu from a 5-star hotel's restaurant.
However, the staff merely informed us that options included "meat and fish," and that was all. We were completely ignored, and each time we had to inquire whether the dinner included a starter, salad, or dessert. This lack of detail left us feeling frustrated and undervalued as guests.
But I can't ignore mentioning that after the bad dining experience, the hotel manager provided a complimentary bottle of wine with fresh fruits waiting to our room.

Well, the hotel and the employees are top. They know how to communicate with guests. But please staff; don’t call all inclusive this way! Although you say it’s soft all inclusive, it’s nothing more then full board. The food is delicious. Because we expected more then a full board, we decided to skip this hotel, just after 3 days. I would like to provide an update for anyone who wonders what happened in my case. To summarize quickly, I am a doctoral researcher from Sweden, and a friend of mine and I used to frequent Lord's Palace swimming pool. However, recently, they didn't allow us access to their swimming pool.
We had a phone call regarding this issue to solve, but unfortunately, we didn't resolve the problem. The conversation centered around how busy the pool area was, but the actual reason for our rejection was that we were two men...
The strange thing was that they informed me on the phone that the lady working at the reception was from Albania. This conversation left me wondering: Did the Albanian lady reject us because of our nationality? Or is this something Albanian people always do? This conversation once again brought to light the issue of racism. Unfortunately, they left a negative impression on me and those around me.
As a frequent traveler who enjoys spending time in high-standard hotels and restaurants, including Michelin-starred establishments, I can distinguish the best hotels and restaurants. However, the experience we had at Lord's Palace left me feeling upset.
Batuhan UYGAR — Google review
Having just landed back in the UK after a 9-day stay at Lords Palace I can truly say they deserve all of the 5-star ratings. Having never traveled to this part of the world I was apprehensive about what we might meet there and how it would be. But from the first greeting at the door, the staff were great. They appear to have a large mix of staff from different parts of the world, all trained to a high standard so, you are always in good hands whoever deals with your requests.
From the 1st greeting to the 1st meal, all were seamless, which brings me to the next major topic—the food. The smorgasbord of culinary delights you are met with every breakfast, lunch, and dinner would leave even the pickiest of eaters full to the brim. The food is cooked to a high standard and presented exceptionally well. With a wide range of Eastern delicacies and Turkish traditional meals, you won't be left wanting. All of us including the young one have put on healthy weight.
The outside facilities include 3 pools which we used at length, also the children's play center with very attentive staff.
We really had a good time here, a special mention goes to ALEX the guest relations representative, his help was essential in helping us navigate the resort.
Other great mentions go to Rezzak and Raj the most attentive waiters in the main restaurant and of course Yilmaz the manager. All really made our stay very special, with attention to detail and a warm friendly demeanor.
Would we come back yes! Would we recommend yes!

Alagadi (Turtle) Beach, east of Kyrenia, is a small sea turtle conservation and research centre with two sandy bays where turtles hatch in summer. The beach is closed at night from May to October to protect the turtles. There are free or hotel beaches close by.
Tip: from the parking lot the *right* beach is the one we went to and it had no trash, clear water, a beautiful sandy section with no rocks, and no smokestack views. Other users are giving reviews of the left beach I think, because the beach we found by going right from the parking lot (when facing the water) was the best beach we had found in northern Cyprus.

Decent wild beach, a lot of sea weed but clean. Very few people this time of year. Amazing place for swimming, running, hiking and exploring. Many sides of this beach can be explored. Especially making picnic here is suitable but sand is erratating. The best part I'll say is there no plastic wastage at the sea and on the beach too. There's no bin around, so try to pick up your trash and at the parking area , throw it there. I advise to go on the 3rd turn to Alagadi. At the end of the beach, on the right side from parking, you can see notice like a small island. You can go there. Very lovely to be at that side, and you can explore bit more but careful for your toes, better to wear some shoe.

In the scenic Kyrenia area of northern Cyprus, Buffavento Castle stands as a captivating historical attraction. Positioned atop a hill, this castle is part of a trio built for defense against Arab invasions. While not as well-preserved as its counterparts, it offers an intriguing exploration opportunity. Situated at 950m above sea level, the castle provides stunning views of the bay and features hallways and stone windows characteristic of 11th-century Byzantine architecture.

It’s beautiful place, and we have to visit it one time in your life, you can see the sea view from the palace.
I don’t advice this journey for elder people or children.
It’s little dangerous, long and high stairs.
And it could be better if taking car of it.
ABDULLAH QADRI — Google review
The view is amazing, it’s worth for the 5200 steps my watch marked from the parking but the trail is not in great condition, I would prefer to pay a ticket but to have more security with the handrails. The worst thing was the road from the highway to the parking and viceverse. There are sections with no place to park and let pass the car from the other side… a nightmare
Maria Victoria Baraghian — Google review
So worth climbing, the views are stunning across the whole island, it takes 30 mins to get to the top from the last car park. You can choose to do a longer hike (10km) as well through the wilderness. For more information regarding trails pick up “walks in North Cyprus” book. We bought it for 5euro in the city centre in the “tower” of Kyrenia. Ask in the info point.

Hell of a walk especially the last 60m. Well worth the trek to see the views which await. Absolutely stunning and really happy we chose to visit on a mild March day.

If you're a history buff or an adventurer seeking breathtaking views, Buffavento Castle is an absolute must-visit destination in Northern Cyprus!
Perched atop the Kyrenia mountain range, this medieval fortress offers an enchanting journey through time. As you ascend the winding path to the castle, you'll be captivated by its ancient walls and rugged beauty. The hike is invigorating and rewards you with awe-inspiring panoramic views that stretch all the way to the shimmering Mediterranean Sea.
Stepping into Buffavento Castle is like stepping into history. Imagine standing where Byzantine soldiers once stood, defending against invaders and gazing out at a changing world. The castle's name, which translates to "defier of the winds," adds a touch of mystery, reminding us of the challenges faced by those who built and defended this impressive stronghold.
History aficionados will delight in exploring the remnants of this once-mighty fortress. Towering walls, ancient chambers, and remnants of a bygone era will transport you back in time. The castle's role in medieval conflicts, its connections to various empires, and its vantage point for monitoring the region's activities all contribute to its rich historical tapestry.
Don't forget your camera! The panoramic views from Buffavento Castle are postcard-worthy. Capture the sweeping landscapes and rugged terrain that surround you, as well as the fascinating architectural details that have withstood the test of time.
Please note that reaching the castle involves a moderately challenging hike or drive up the mountain. But trust me, the journey is worth every step. Remember to wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water, especially during warmer months.
In summary, Buffavento Castle is a gem that lets you walk in the footsteps of history while immersing yourself in breathtaking natural beauty. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply seeking an unforgettable adventure, this castle will leave an indelible mark on your heart and memory.
The Shipwreck Museum in Kyrenia Castle is packed with fascinating artifacts from the ancient world. Highlights include a 2,400-year-old Greek trading vessel and its cargo.
Small Museum packed with fascinating artifacts...
The Shipwreck Museum houses the remains and cargo of what was once the oldest shipwreck ever discovered and raised. At almost 2,400 years old, the Ancient Greek trading vessel and its cargo provide a rare insight into life during the time of Alexander the Great.
Kyrenia Castle alone is more than worth a visit, so if you're here, be sure to take an hour to tour this little museum,
Sasch Mayer — Google review
The artifacts themselves are very interesting including amphoris and other tools from the shipwreck as well as the remains of the ship. The exhibition itself is very badly kept. Some of the wax statues are spoiled by bird droppings and its been months if not more since the whole museum was last busted. A replica of the shipwreck exhibited here can be found in the Athalassa Museum in Agia Napa in the Southern Part of the island.
aaron gatt — Google review
Very impressive shipwreck and museum with atmosphere, souvenirs shop(not very much to buy) and buffet are available.
Dominik Kotlar — Google review
The museum is not big, but visiting it might have some educational value for kids and adolescents. There are the remnants of the ship and a few amphoras. Frankly speaking, I deem that there is nothing special to stay inside for more than 15 minutes.
Alexander Potapov — Google review
The museum is inside the kyrenia kalesi. They have original items that the wrecked ship carried about 2300 years ago. They also house the ships wooden hull but the entrance to see this is small and get a bit crowded as they have one door for entry and exit.

The Kyrenia Shipwreck stands as a truly remarkable artifact of the ancient world, offering a profound glimpse into the historical maritime trade that flourished between Cyprus and Greece. This ancient Greek shipwreck, among the oldest in the world, is a treasure that embodies the enduring connection and exchange of goods between these two regions.
However, it is with a heavy heart that one must acknowledge the unfortunate condition in which this invaluable piece of history currently resides. Housed within the confines of a castle, the shipwreck has suffered from inadequate care and maintenance. The neglect it has endured since the tragic events of 1974, coupled with evident signs of unprofessional handling, is deeply concerning.
As a globally significant heritage artefact, the Kyrenia Shipwreck deserves nothing less than the utmost care and attention from experts in the field. It is imperative that this historical treasure be moved to a specially designed facility equipped with the ideal environmental conditions and preservation techniques before further deterioration occurs.
Regrettably, the under construction of the impressive Nicosia New Museum will possess the necessary resources and capabilities to provide a suitable home for the Kyrenia Shipwreck. Yet, the issue of territorial disputes appears to hinder progress, as the Turkish Authorities reluctance to cooperate jeopardizes the preservation of this invaluable piece of history.
In summary, the Kyrenia Shipwreck deserves an unreserved 5-star rating for its historical significance and the profound insights it offers into ancient trade. However, the lamentable condition in which it currently exists warrants only 2 stars, highlighting the urgent need for professional care and a suitable, purpose-built environment for its preservation. It is my hope that international cooperation and consensus will prevail, ensuring that this extraordinary artefact receives the attention and care it so rightfully merits.

The Blue House, also known as Mavi Kosk, has a captivating history tied to its former owner, Byron Pavlides. Built in 1957, this luxurious villa was the residence of Paulo Paolides, a lawyer with a notorious reputation as a mobster and gun smuggler. The house is now well-maintained under the control of the Turkish army and offers guided tours that provide insight into its intriguing past.
The beautiful luxury villa was built by Paulo Paolides in 1957, a lawyer who was known as a mobster and a gun smuggler into Cyprus. He escaped in 1974 through a hidden tunnel behind his bed. The residence is very well maintained and is under control of the Turkish army. Guides dressed in black suits like mobsters give the visit a special charm. Our guide was excellent , he explained all the details about the history, furnishings and the way of life in this incredible house.

Fascinating insight into pre-division life in this frozen in time relic. The stories surrounding Paulides are remarkable. Very much thought provoking. It's located within the boundaries of the military camp at Camlibel visiting is permitted, but you will need your passports and now a credit/debit card to pay for entry. Also take some cash for the food and drink store located in the gardens. The ground floor 'pub' is awesome with tables colour coded to the guest rooms. The place makes for an awesome visit.

Nice view; polite military staff at the gate; nice price for coffee. Tour guide was miserable. Otherwise great place.
Gabe K. — Google review
You can think of it as a museum of lessons. As the leader of the criminal organization of the period, he enabled the massacre of innocent civilians in the region by smuggling weapons. The hierarchy in this luxury-loving house is shocking. Rumor has it that Sophie Loren also stayed in this house. The house of a criminal leader who escaped before the Cyprus peace operation by Turkish armed forces. Strongly adviced to visit. The blue house is inside the military zone.

100 percent worth visiting. Take a leisurely drive to Mavi kosk the blue House. Where you need to enter from the army camps. Do be afraid of the army just tell them you would like to visit. You will need to leave your ID to enter. Once you get to the blue House you will enjoy break taking views. You would also be guided on a tour inside the mansion villa. Worth a visit.

Highly recommend to visit the place for the view, the house itself honestly wasn't impressive and there was no English translation for the explanations the tour guide did. But the place has caftira and I think they're building a proper restaurant or a coffee house next to it, it would be a great addition.

Very interesting place, easy to access despite the army security which wasn't as intimidating as we expected although you do give up a passport at the gate which you get back when you leave. We had to wait a wee while until an English speaking tour guide was available. The tour is scripted, our guide wasn't too happy with random comments and questions but quite comprehensive. Worth a trip to see it and also the views from the terrace. There is a basic cafe in the garden area, drinks and I think some sandwiches maybe and picnic tables available to use. Good parking and toilets available too. A worthwhile visit.

Although we asked if there was a space for four people, the staff member said yes and charged us 600 lira. After that, we wandered around at least half an hour under the sun, trying to find an umbrella. All in all, it was a waste of 2 hours of lifetime.

Great little beach club. 150 Lira for adults and 75 Lira for children to get in and that includes a beach bed and use of facilities. To use the inflatable that is on the sea that is 150 Lira and you have use of it all day. Water sports such as Jet skiing, Parasailing, ect come at an extra charge and you need cash (Lira or Euros). We did the parasailing which was 2060 Lira or 70 euros, good experience and for an extra 300 Lira or 10 euros they take pictures on a professional camera for you - the pictures came out great! All staff members (beach club and water sports) were lovely. Reasonable food prices (bit pricier than other places for alcohol but still cheaper than London). Would come again and recommend to all adults and families.

Antiphonitis Church used to be the centre of an influential monastery. It was once the premier Byzantine monument in the Kyrenia hills. Because of its unusual design, it is thought to have been built by local artists.
The church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, was built in the 7th century. However the narthex to the west and the gallery to the south were added by the Lusignans in the 14th or 15th century.
Considering its features, this building is one of the finest of its kind in Cyprus to survive to the present day. The cloister arrangement in the south is a unique example of gothic stone work. However, nothing remains of the wooden upper covering or the stone parapet between the columns.
The building in its original form was fully covered with frescoes, most of which have unfortunately disappeared. Among the survivors, the Virgin Blachernitissa, with the figure of the Christ Child at her bosom and flanked by Gabriel and Michael, occupies the conch of the apse. Blachernitissa is unusual among Orthodox icons in that it is not flat, but is formed in bas relief. According to Sacred Tradition, the icon Blachernitissa was made of wax combined with the ashes of Christian martyrs who had been killed in the 6th century.

The Ağa Cafer Pasha Mosque, located on a cobbled street near Kyrenia Harbour, is named after an Ottoman Governor who generously donated the land for its construction. Some speculate that it was originally a Lusignan warehouse before being converted into a mosque in the 1580s. This rectangular structure, made of cut stone, consists of three main rooms and features a single minaret. It remains in use to this day.
Small but very welcoming mosque. Good location.

Nestled near the harbor, the mosque stands as a beacon of peace and serenity in the bustling city. Its towering minarets pierce the sky, a constant reminder of the faithful's devotion to their beliefs. As you approach the mosque, the intricate details of the architecture come into view, a testament to the skilled craftsmanship that went into its construction.
Upon entering the mosque, you are greeted by a sense of calm and tranquility. The cool air and dim lighting create an atmosphere of peace, inviting visitors to slow down and take a moment to reflect. The hushed whispers of prayers and the occasional rustling of robes create a soothing background noise that adds to the overall aura of the space.
The mosque's interior is stunningly beautiful, with intricate patterns and designs adorning every surface. The geometric shapes and intricate calligraphy are mesmerizing, drawing the eye in and inviting contemplation. The mihrab, the niche in the wall indicating the direction of prayer, is a focal point of the space and adds to the overall sense of reverence.

The mosque's presence is a reminder that amidst the hustle and bustle of everyday life, there is always a place for reflection and inner peace. In a cobbled street running to Kyrenia Harbour, this mosque is named after an Ottoman Governor who donated the land where it's built. It was built in the 1580’s, although some claim it was converted from a Lusignan warehouse. The cut stone rectangular construction has 3 main rooms and a single minaret and is still used today.
Southeast of the mosque is the Hasan Kavizade Huseyn Efendi fountain, built in 1841. The northern face has 3 arches, typical of the Ottoman design of the time. In the middle arch there's a marble inscription crescent, a coat of arms and branch figures carved into the stonework.
