Unlike many other North German Town Halls which are mostly built in Gothic style in traditional red brick, this one in a charming town of Luneburg differs.
It's built in a beautiful Baroque style, occupying the central Market square. Plenty of cafes around to relax and enjoy the atmosphere

Lüneburg's town hall is a storyteller, administrative seat, landmark and gem all in one. With its 259 rooms, it is one of the most outstanding architectural monuments in northern Germany and the largest medieval town hall in the north. The construction of our town hall began around 1230 and was repeatedly rebuilt and expanded over the centuries. Thanks to its 700-year building history, traces from various epochs have been left throughout the town hall: Gothic and Renaissance court arbor, prince's hall, old archive, chancellery and mayor's chamber. Masterful woodwork adorns the large council chamber, which is one of the largest Renaissance halls in Germany. The Hall of Homage and the market facade date from the Baroque period. In the tower there is a clockwork with chimes made of Meissen porcelain.
The town hall is still actively used as the seat of the administration of the city of Lüneburg. However, the most beautiful rooms are open for you to visit as part of a guided tour.

If you come Lüneburg, then make sure to take the guided tour of the City Hall. The city hall is supposed to be one of the most beautiful city halls in Germany, which was as the city itself was luckily was not destroyed during the war. If you come on a Saturday, you cN combine the visit of the market right outside the city hall, with a guided tour. We had the most entertaining German lady, who could tell way more than what she was able to tell us in this one hour tour.

The German Salt Museum is a unique and intriguing venue that showcases exhibits and displays outlining the 1,000-year history of salt-mining in the city. It features a small yet amazing museum with an audio-guide available in both English and German, providing visitors with interesting insights into the industry. The museum shop offers a wide range of salt products for purchase along with posters and postcards depicting Lubeck at affordable prices. Anyone visiting Luneburg should definitely consider exploring this fascinating museum.
Interesting place, absolutely recommend if in Lüneburg.

Surprisingly, I had a wonderful time touring the Salt Museum. They offer an audio tour in English for 1€, alternatively you can borrow a binder of translations of the exhibit for free. The space is much larger (and deeper) than expected and gives you a thorough history of Lüneburg and its role in the middle ages. Loved the maps and models of the original town layout and interactive models of the saltworks. As a solo traveling 30 yr old, I highly recommend it if you like history and salt :)

Salt salt and salt! Amazing small-ish museum. The audio-guide (in English and German) was only €1 and it was quite interesting. The museum shop had so much salt! Also, the posters of Lübeck was only 30 cents! There were also some cool postcards (6 for 50 cents). It was great!

The experience overall was pretty nice. The history was pretty interesting, and I personally loved the fact that there are little fountains that let people taste the water like it was back in the day. The stuff was very friendly, but we got a little confused with the directions. We asked multiple times where the start was, and we never got a clear answer. Long story short, we started from the end, and we finished at the start. The ticket costs 8€ and I think it was 4€ plus if you want to have the little device that explains everything during the experience. It was pretty good for 1 time but not a must, in my opinion.

Established in 1172, Lüne Abbey is a picturesque convent that offers visitors guided tours and a museum showcasing textile art. The property features well-maintained gardens, and there is also a café on site. The walk to the abbey along Bockelmannstrabe is enjoyable, with plenty of trees providing shade along the way. Although the church may not always be accessible to visitors, it's still worth taking time to appreciate the beautiful old buildings and charming surroundings.
This convent is about a 15-20 minute walk from the center of town, depending how fast you walk. When you get to a road called Bockelmannstrabe, cross over to a bike path that will take you directly to the convent. The walk along the path is beautiful with all the trees. There's a cafe and gardens. Very peaceful. This is only open seasonally.

The Kurpark state park offers a pleasant environment for various recreational activities, such as picnicking and other outdoor pursuits. While some visitors may find the playground area for children to be insufficient in size, there is ample space available that could potentially be utilized to create a more enjoyable place for kids. It is hopeful that the town will consider rebuilding this area in the near future. The park also provides a great setting for leisurely strolls, with plenty of room to engage in different activities.
It's a beautiful park. It's the go-to place on Sunday for families with children. The children can splash around in the small fountain which is surrounded by seating. The ancient dockside crane, which has been in operation for hundreds of years, was originally used to lift a variety of valuable items including salt and firewood. The city's charming ambiance and well-preserved architecture make it worth visiting. Although the area can become congested at times, it remains a great place to stroll around, especially on sunny days.
The old crane is Lüneburg’s secret landmark. A crane on the Illmenau is mentioned for the first time in 1346. Two wooden carrying wheels – with which the crane once lightened heavy loads - are hidden inside this still fully functioning industrial memorial. When Lüneburg was connected to the railway network in 1846, the crane became redundant. Today this structurally engineered memorial is very close to the heart of Lüneburg’s inhabitants and lovingly tended.
For more than 2,500 years, heavy loads were being lifted with the help of carrying wheels. Lüneburg’s crane was re-built in 1797 according to medieval plans. Time and again it is said that the hard work inside the crane was conducted by convicts. But this demanding work was actually done by skilled workers who were employed as stevedores at the warehouse on the opposite side.
You can only get inside the crane when taking one of the guided tours of the city.

According to sources, the Old Crane (formerly Krahn) is a historic harbor crane in the old port of Ilmenau in Lüneburg. A short trip to Lüneburg is the natural consequence after visiting Lübeck. The salt that made Lübeck rich actually came from Lüneburg! At the former harbor in the water district (Wasserviertel), you'll find this "Old Crane," a (secret) symbol of Lüneburg. This is where the precious salt ("white gold") was shipped, bringing great wealth to the city during the time of the Hanseatic League. In the Middle Ages, the crane was an important tool for lifting heavy loads, especially salt bags, onto ships or onto land—thus allowing the salt to be transported further to Lübeck through the Stecknitz Canal. Two old ships can still be seen there. And there are plenty of lovely Cafés around the square - a true tourist magnet! 🤩

(Translated by Google) The Pregnant House is located in the historic town of Lüneburg in Lower Saxony. Located right next to the town hall, you should take a short detour to the house, a brick building from the Middle Ages on Schwertstraße. Because the plaster used expands when wet (chemical reaction), the arch was created in the lower part of the building and was given the name "Pregnant House". The plaster used comes from the Lüneburg Kalkberg. This review was based on our own experience.

The Brausebrücke is a highly recommended spot to visit in Luneburg's historic center, offering stunning views of the town and its river harbor. This small bridge is situated in a picturesque location near the Fischmarkt, making it one of the most beautiful places in the area. Its charm is particularly enhanced during the Christmas season, attracting visitors with its festive ambiance.

(Translated by Google) Fantastic, romantic Lüneburg at its most beautiful. Stay at the Stint, have a coffee or a cold drink in a beautiful setting. Or discover the old town. Lüneburg also has a lot of hidden nature in the middle of the city!!! There is the Kalkberg, the Kurpark, the Liebesgrund or the Kreidebergsee. There is also a lot of nature and beautiful “corners” on the outskirts of the city. An extra review from me soon.

The building impresses with its functionality and clear lines. With the partially covered roof, the building blends in well with the surrounding greenery. You really have to look for the view from the city's water tower!

(Translated by Google) Really nice building. Maybe not so appealing from the outside, but really wonderful from the inside. The rooms are beautifully designed and spacious. There is a nice view on the upper floors.
The stairwell is a bit sparse and looks like a construction site and finding rooms can be quite complicated with all the nooks and crannies, even though everything is actually always signposted.

(Translated by Google) And the building was so expensive? So that's good for the construction industry, but couldn't you have just used the money to build a less expensive or unusual building (i.e. instead of 91 million, one for 21 million) and then maybe 10 kindergartens or something for 7 million each??? The construction industry would have benefited from this just as much and it would have had greater added value….

(Translated by Google) The exhibition team has obviously found the topic they love: the emergence and spread of popular culture (especially beat music), preferably in the region. The current exhibition on the central places that brought this music to young people is successful and well worth seeing. Particularly touching: the photos of young Achim Reichel with the Rattles, who just turned 80 these days. It is to be hoped that this exhibition at this location will not only be visited by the generation of contemporary witnesses (still possible until the end of March 24 and actually free of charge!). The Starclub in Hamburg and similar clubs are being brought back to life and are being classified through historical references (where you can see that not everything was better in the past). This will definitely bring back a lot of memories for the experience generation.
Many thanks especially to Carsten Junge from the Sparkasse Foundation!

Der Starclub in Hamburg und ähnliche Clubs werden wieder zum Leben erweckt und werden in der Entstehung durch historische Verweise (bei denen man feststellen kann, dass früher wahrhaftig nicht alles besser war) eingeordnet. Great! The atmosphere at Leuphana University of Lüneburg is laid-back, with a well-maintained basketball court featuring an array of benches and padded support for extended baskets. People can be seen enjoying various activities such as sports, yoga, and picnics. Additionally, the presence of a guy maneuvering a remote control car adds excitement to the scene. With around 10,000 students, this university focuses on serious career topics in science and technology.
I just can't believe how friendly and supportive everyone in the Leuphana university are! From the deans to the teachers and all sorts of students, it just put a giant smile on my face!
Thank you for being such a progressive, forward thinking, humanist, flexible and interdisciplinary beacon in the otherwise vast desert of German learning.
You rock!

Leuphana University staff were very unprofessional with me. They were very late in responding to my application; they only informed me that I wasn't accepted after I sent an email inquiring about it. Till this day I haven't received an official rejection letter from them, only replies to my emails. They said that my application was considered "not consecutive", even though I carefully read through what was considered consecutive degrees for the masters program I was applying to. I have two degrees from that list of consecutive degrees. Disappointing treatment by an academic institution....
