The Walls of Lugo, also known as Muralla Romana de Lugo, are a remarkable example of Roman architecture and history. Built in the 3rd century to enclose the city of Lucus as a defensive measure, this site spans over two kilometers and boasts 46 remaining towers. As the only intact Roman wall left in the world, it has been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its outstanding construction and archaeological significance.
Super nice to take a walk around the walls. Greats views of the city and history/culture.

2.2 kms of history.
Unesco's protected wall is mind blowing. Took a run around the city several times and was awestruck at the views and the history. The Roam walls of Lugo were built in the later part of the 3rd century to defend the Roman town of Lucus. The entire circuit survives intact and is the finest example of late Roman fortifications in western Europe. AMAZING!

UNESCO 🇪🇦Roman Walls of Lugo
The walls of Lugo were built in the later part of the 3rd century to defend the Roman town of Lucus. The entire circuit survives intact and is the finest example of late Roman fortifications in western Europe.
Roman Walls of Lugo, a city in the Autonomous Region of Galicia in north-western Spain, are an exceptional architectural, archaeological and constructive legacy of Roman engineering, dating from the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. The Walls are built of internal and external stone facings of slate with some granite, with a core filling of a conglomerate of slate slabs and worked stone pieces from Roman buildings, interlocked with lime mortar.
Their total length of 2117 m in the shape of an oblong rectangle occupies an area of 1.68 ha. Their height varies between 8 and 10 m, with a width of 4.2 m, reaching 7 m in some specific points. The walls still contain 85 external towers, 10 gates (five of which are original and five that were opened in modern times), four staircases and two ramps providing access to the walkway along the top of the walls, one of which is internal and the other external. Each tower contained access stairs leading from the intervallum to the wall walk of town wall, of which a total of 21 have been discovered to date.
The defences of Lugo are the most complete and best preserved example of Roman military architecture in the Western Roman Empire.
Despite the renovation work carried out, the walls conserve their original layout and the construction features associated with their defensive purpose, with walls, battlements, towers, fortifications, both modern and original gates and stairways, and a moat.

The Roman walls that enclose the historical part of the city are super wide on top and you can stroll or even jog around them. I'm told that they it's three kilometers or so to get back to where you started but I'm yet to complete a full circuit!!

Built in the 3rd century, this wall is a fascinating historical sight. It circles the old center of Lugo and has many exit staircases so you can quickly travel to different parts of the city. It's a pleasant walk to the cathedral and has spectacular views if the weather is nice.

La Muralla dates back to the 3rd century. Built by the Romans, it is mostly intact. The views on the wall aren't the greatest but walking this wall leaves anyone impressed with the labor of those who completed this construction so long ago. A must see Lugo.

The Kathedral in Lugo is a captivating masterpiece, blending Romanesque and Gothic architecture. Its grandeur, serene interior, and remarkable treasury of religious artifacts make it a must-visit. Climbing the towers provides breathtaking views.

This is a magnificent Cathedral with beautiful towers and a magnificent bell tower. The bells are rang on Easter Sunday and on Corpus Christi Sunday. It is possible to enter one of the towers of the Cathedral under special circumstances through the guided tours, which boasts breathtaking views over Lugo. The marvelous work of Architect Fernando Casas Novoa is the Chapel of Our Lady of the Big Eyes, a beautiful circular chapel to the rear of the cathedral, and faces Lugo's Main Square. The cathedral is a must visit. The exterior architecture of the cathedral is spectacular, both inside and outside.

The Museo Provincial de Lugo is a large museum that displays regional archaeology and art exhibits in a former monastery and newer buildings. Despite its unimpressive exterior, the museum offers an extensive collection of various types of art and artifacts dating back to prehistoric ages. Notably, the second floor houses a priceless collection of stone age artefacts, including one of the biggest golden collars from prehistoric times. However, photography is not permitted on this floor.

The Domus Mitreo is a historical archaeological site featuring the ruins of a Roman house and temple. The museum has an impressive collection with interactive screens providing information on the villa and temple. Visitors can enjoy the friendly and knowledgeable staff who are fluent in English, eager to share their knowledge, and offer discounted tickets for students, pensioners, and teachers with proper identification. However, it may be challenging for non-Italian speakers to access the more modern exhibits lacking English translations.
A very good site explaining you the history of that specific space opposite to the city's cathedral. From a Roman house following the recommendations of Vitruvius that added a sanctuary to the eastern deity Mitra, to being demolished in order to build Lugo's famous Roman defensive walls. To a medieval graveyard and an aristocratic baroque residence.

The first corresponds to the remains of a Roman cemetery, first with burials of cremation (urns with ashes) and later of inhumation, two tombs are preserved, but there are no tombstones, these are in the provincial museum. The second area is a large Roman concrete pond possibly related to the cult of some oriental deity, the only one preserved of this style. And the third area is a kiln dedicated to the construction of ceramic material for industrial use.

They are good people and empathize with people. I can't be more than grateful for how well the girl who served me treated me. I remember that she was at table 1, dark-haired and very pleasant, with a smile despite the number of people she had to serve and the queue. there was.

It is shameful and the ride will be as always shameful, bad, painful. Oh God, how is it from Menoa to Orozco, he was a good mayor, he put on some nice parades, in which they participated, the protective dogs, the merchandise trucks would throw balls, there was much more atmosphere. Now it's embarrassing
AND TOURISTS DO NOT COME TO LUGO BECAUSE IT DOES NOT DESERVE ANYTHING TO COME TO SEE AND EDIT IN A CITY THAT DOES NOT DO ANYTHING TO DO, IMPROVE CHRISTMAS FOR EVERYONE AND THE LITTLE ONE AND ESPECIALLY CENTER MORE ON THE ARDE LUCUS AND NOT ON A GOOD CHRISTMAS AND AT THE FESTIVITIES OF SAN FROILAN
TOURISTS AND PEOPLE OF LUGO I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IRSR DE LUGO AVWR THINGS DIFFERENT FROM XOMO TO VIGO AND ETC. LUGO DOES NOT DESERVE THAT EITHER TOURISTS OR LUCENSIANS SEE A HORRIBLE CHRISTMAS AND CABALFATAS IN LUGO

Neat, small museum that is great intro to Lugo history and good first stop. Sadly, aside from subtitles on a really informative short video, there is no English anywhere (Galician & Spanish). No English guidebook or audio guide. The placards are new and, from having translated every one of them on a translation tool, they are concise, well-written, and well-curated. So sad with all that recent renovation they didn't include English to make it accessible to foreigners. The way the text is colored and laid out on placards makes it easy on the eye but difficult to scan Spanish using a mobile translation tool. If you scan Galician, you can get a clean shot...so make sure your translation tool handles Galician (Google Translate does). Still a "must visit" as the artifacts and 101 intro are great. Admission is free, but I'd much rather pay and have those funds facilitate English translations.

Today it is a building with a modern, organized design and excellent exhibition that houses a collection of Roman archaeological finds in a very good state of conservation. On the recommendation of the kind person who assisted us at the tourist office, we went yesterday to this center where the visitor can have a quick and clear overview of the city's past: an explanatory video of about ten minutes and an exhibition based on panels and archaeological finds complete the visit. To highlight the extreme kindness and dedication of the person in charge of welcoming the visitor and responding, as was our case, to any questions with true knowledge and appreciation for the subject.

Small site of an ancient roman house that includes mozaics, floor and walls. There is a video that explains the various rooms of the house (the video I saw was in spanish, I'm not sure about other languages). The staff was helpful and friendly, and the entrance is free.

An imaginative video and a really helpful member of staff gave us a fuller context to the Roman history of Lugo. This is a small site below ground with an entrance that's easy to miss. Don't expect a huge amount of excavation, the surrounding buildings did not allow for this. But what there is gives enough of a feel of a large villa built for someone with money and power. The explanations are a huge bonus.
