Carrière Wellington is a site of historical significance that features underground tunnels which were strategically used in 1917. The location offers guided tours and exhibits that provide detailed information about its history. Visitors can enjoy an educational and engaging experience with attention paid to small details to ensure a smooth visit. Guided tours are available in both French and English, with the guide effortlessly switching between languages to cater to their audience's level of understanding.
One of the best experiences I’ve had in a long time. Educational and engaging. One can notice that lots of attention has been paid to the small details to offer a smooth visitor experience.
The guided tour was offered in French and in English with our guide switching effortlessly between both and adapting the level of the explanations to the audience. We had kids with us and they were able to follow and understand everything.
The audio guides fragments provide complementary explanations and are nicely woven in the visit between the guide’s explanations.
All in all, a must do if you are in Arras!
PS: to the two young people working last Saturday morning, merci beaucoup!

A fantastic museum with an excellent audio visual experience. Our wonderful guide, Mathias, brought the experience of the soldiers of WW1 vividly to life for us. I would recommend this ‘experience’ 100% to anyone visiting the region and wanting to learn about WW1. Thank you for a wonderful experience for the whole family.

A superbly presented experience of First World War history with a great mix of audiovisual presentation and in-person guide. The context of the site and time is well explained to allow the visitor to get the most from the experience. It was interesting to explore an aspect of First World War tactics I was less familiar with. Highly recommended.

Be sure to visit the Wellington Tunnels if you are in Arras. After a short tour above ground, you go down in a lift to the tunnels. From here there is an audio guide as well as information for the tour guide themselves. Both are highly informative and give real depth to the men who inhabited the tunnels prior to the spring offensive of 1917.
A superb place to visit and extremely well presented.

This is a fantastic attraction. Medieval quarry that was forgotten and then rediscovered during WWI, which allowed the British to interconnect a whole swathe of quarries, under the Arras region. The tour is well-thought out and uses projectors and headset, to give information and act out soldiers' letters home, to really give a feel for what it must have been like, whilst waiting for the whistle to blow for the eventual attack that was launched on the German lines there. A worthwhile visit.
The Beffroi d'Arras is a remarkable historic Gothic clock tower that is now open to the public. It offers stunning panoramic views of the city and Hero Square. Visitors can take a lift and climb 43 steps to reach the door for access, with an entrance fee of 9 euros per person or 20 euros for a family group of three during COVID-19 times.
Very good place to overlook the Hero Square. It costs entrance fee to enter. There is a very small exhibition included in the fare as well. Some stairs need to be taken to access the panoramic view. You might want to be extra careful if having bad knees.

The town hall and the belfry are one whole in Arras.
The building was destroyed during the First World War , after which the French rebuilt it .
In 1932 it was once again displayed on the Place des Héros.
The town hall provides access to the belfry and to the underground system of corridors that are located here in the
10th century AD.
"Les Boves" are corridors excavated from former chalk quarries. You can visit these for a fee.
Guided tours of the town hall are held at 3 pm in July and August. You can then see, among other things, the wedding hall, the banquet hall and the council chamber.
In the entrance hall are the giants of Arras.
Colas and Jacqueline have existed in hymns since 1812.
In 1892 they first appeared in the form of giants. In WWI and WWII they were destroyed but were always restored in full glory
The tourist office is also located in the town hall.
Sorry to say but they don't know much about their "own" city.
Pay particular attention to opening hours. Go there yourself to what you want to see because according to them everything is closed.

Pay about €3 and you can go up the belfry and look out over the town. It's well worth it with some excellent views. Be aware it's not for those with a fear of heights, a lift takes you most of the way but you have to use stairs for the last bit. There is a nice square below with cafes and restaurants to get some food.

Beautiful place to visit. Came with a large group at 11am and we had it to ourselves.
Wonderfully maintained with beautiful flowers.
Huge stone memorials provide a wonderful entrance while blocking out the noise from the streets making it very peaceful inside.

The Arras memorial is actually several memorials to the Commonwealth all put together in one location. Here at the memorial you will see Americans Germans Canadians British New Zealand South Africans as well as other people that help the Commonwealth during the war. There is also a Russian grave on site.
I would recommend you plan at least 45 minutes to view and appreciate this location.
Of special note is the German memorials mixed with the Commonwealth graves.
At the far end of the cemetery you will also find a American Colonel who is memorialized in the cemetery.

Beaux-Arts Museum of Arras at the former Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Vaast
The Beaux-Arts Museum of Arras is housed in a 7th-century abbey and showcases an extensive collection of medieval paintings and sculptures. The museum shares the building with the municipal library, spanning three floors with beautiful pieces of art, a cozy workspace, kids area, small libraries, and comfortable seating throughout. Visitors can learn about the history of Arras on the second floor; however, exhibit descriptions are not available in English.

The Abbey of Saint-Vaast is located in Arras, in the Pas-de-Calais.
It was founded in the 7th century on the hill of "La Madeleine", where the future Saint Vaast, former religious teacher of King Clovis, liked to retire.
A first Benidictine monastery was destroyed by fire in 793
The rebuilt abbey was subsequently evacuated several times at the end of the 9th century
Norman invasions.
In the 15th and 16th centuries, the wars of Italy and the clashes between the Kings of France and the Dukes of Burgundy threatened the abbey and its monks, reducing its influence.
The building is so dilapidated that in 1746 Cardinal de Rohan ordered the reconstruction of the abbey in a classical style. From then on, the extensive but sober conventual buildings are accessible via a veranda and sheltered by a garden of honour.
Moreover, after the destruction of Notre-Dame Cathedral during the French Revolution, the new abbey church became the city's new Cathedral by the decision of Napoleon I
During the 19th century, the buildings of the abbey itself were abandoned
by the monks and became the property of the city, hosting the city's Museum of Fine Arts.
Severely damaged during the First World War, it was rebuilt entirely identically.
The building is a historical monument.

Arras Cathedral was built between 1030 and 1396.
It died during the French Revolution. The monastery was requisitioned; the abbey buildings were first used as a hospital and later as barracks.
The abbey church was also desecrated and partly destroyed until 1778 when the building was rebuilt in classical style.
After the enormous damage it suffered during the Second World War, the church was restored again.
It is now considered one of the most beautiful cathedrals in North America.
France.
The windows depict Saints and Bishops who played an important role in the city's religious history.
Yet the Cathedral is especially famous for its Gallery of Saints.
They are eight life-size marble statues, each representing a Saint.
The statues were made by craftsmen in the 19th century.
The large organ was completed in 1962 by the Roethinger factory in Strasbourg. It is still used today to accompany choirs.
Located in the choir of the Cathedral
Louis de Bourbon, legitimate natural son of Louis XIV and
Louise de la Valière, Countess of Vermandois, buried.
He died in 1683 of a malignant fever when returning from his first military campaign at the age of 16.
The cathedral is closed on Mondays and has varying opening hours on other days of the week throughout the year.

I am so incredibly disappointed that I did not get to see this. I am a pilgrim walking from London to Rome, and the posted hours said it would be open today. I understand that things aren’t always completely up to date, so I wouldn’t have put so much trust in the accuracy except that it says the “business” just updated their hours less than a week ago. If it wouldn’t have said that, I would have tried to go last night when I got in or at least verified the hours by calling. As it is, I may live the rest of my life without another opportunity to see this cathedral.

I genuinely think this is one of the most impressive cathedrals in Europe. The place is huge and the stain glass windows are beautiful. The place has so much more natural light that allows you to appreciate the glass and the architecture. There are tours to the top of the tower which gives great views over the area. If you can catch an organ recital then you are really in for a treat, the acoustics are amazing. There is no much parking in the vicinity so you will probably need to park elsewhere and walk in. Well worth the trip though.

A very beautiful modest cathedral. Definitely worth a visit.

Arras casino, built in the 1920s, commissioned by a wealthy family of casino owners from the region, was originally intended as a performance hall, a music hall and also, as the name indicates, a casino.
The eclectic facade provides the decor that refers to the original purpose of the building.
Because the license to open a casino was never obtained, it became a cinema in the 1950s.
In 1977 it became the property of the city and was converted into a multidisciplinary cultural center.
In 2015, the building was renovated and today it is a cultural facility with a national vocation offering dynamic programming.

Small screening room is badly needing sound installation improvements and new seats. Owners are quite friendly and big room is cosy and in a good shape.

The military cemetery known as cimetière de Bailleul Road East serves as the final resting place for soldiers who gave their lives in service to their country. Located in close proximity to Bailleul Road, this solemn burial ground commemorates the sacrifices made during times of conflict. It provides a dignified space where fallen heroes are interred, honoring their bravery and dedication.
The Zivy Crater Cemetery is an extraordinary burial ground that houses the remains of Canadian soldiers who fought in the Battle of Arras and their valiant assault on Vimy Ridge. This unique cemetery stands out due to its unconventional setting within a massive shell hole, resulting in the absence of traditional grave markers. Instead, the names and memories of these brave soldiers are recorded on a commemorative wall.
The Zivy Crater cemetery located at Thelus near Vimy Ridge is a cemetery, containing Canadian soldiers from their assault on Vimy Ridge. This cemetery is different in that there are no grave stones or markers with soldier's names recorded on a remembrance wall. This is a must if visiting Vimy Ridge or other areas of the battlefields .
Lest we forget ❤️ 🌹.

Very unusual cemetery, containing Canadian soldiers from the Battle of Arras, and their attack on Vimy Ridge. Because the dead were placed in a large shell hole there are no specific grave markers, with soldiers recorded on a remembrance wall
