Donegal Castle, a fully restored castle situated in the centre of Donegal Town, is an impressive monument to the power of both Irish and English forces. Originally built in the 15th century by O'Donnell chieftains, it was rebuilt in Jacobean style during the 17th century by Sir Basil Brooke after being burned down by Hugh O'Donnell.
Quaint spot to visit. Fascinating history of the buildings and quite a bit of restoration done
. Worth the 4 euro price!

We enjoyed our time here. It is worth a visit once. The entree fee is 5 EUR. You can spend as much time as you wish here. The place is not crowded at all. There is a hidden cell you can reach there if you use the concrete stairs. The employees are very friendly and I recommend this place.

Donegal Castle is very close to the town centre and was great for the rainy weather that day.
It is indeed more than interesting – after passing the open part in front, visitors enter the building and find a toilet and rooms filled with information. Stairs lead up to another floor, where there is the restored dining area, and finally on top is another room telling of the history of the castle and the town.

A nicely restored small castle
Originally a castle of the O’Donnell family, this small, but well-fortified castle, was taken over by an English lord after the Flight of the Earls and was transformed into a more stately home. The castle itself has been restored and for a small fee you can enter and do a nice self-guided tour. It’s not the biggest castle in Ireland, but it is a pleasant place and worth a visit.
David Dancey — Google review
Have visited many castles in cities around Europe and although this is small in comparison I found it more interesting than most.
The O’Donnell’s were a powerhouse in the area.
Red Hugh was the last.
The castle was very interesting and in many respects a sad experience as Hugh O’Donnells last act was to burn it to the ground to prevent the English using it as a stronghold. It is well worth the 5 Euro entrance fee.

Nice to see, but not a lot to see, then just handed a laminated sheet and that's the last you'll see of the staff
Thankfully only 5 euro is so not too bad
No parking or limited of about 4 paid on street outside if not taken up
Worth a visit but not worth going out of your way for

My favorite castle so far! You can go inside and see what it would have been like to live there. Affordable 5 euros entrance fee. Awesome to walk around in!

A small monument with a significant history. I really appreciated how well-maintained it is and the fact that at the front desk, they provided us with pamphlets detailing the history of the place, so we had a guide while walking within the castle walls. Inside, there's an exhibition with models that show how the castle has changed and evolved over time.

I stopped in Donegal for lunch and visited Donegal Castle. The castle is definitely undergoing restoration. I took a guided tour with an OPW tour guide and she was absolutely amazing and she is the reason for the higher score. She explained the nine years war in such a dramatic fashion that I could have listened to her all day. I was literally on the edge of my seat. There are only a few rooms. There are some original parts like floors and ceilings left. You get a good idea of why the castle was designed its way. My favorite area was the fireplace, and again, the tour guide did an amazing job. I would definitely recommend stopping here and taking a guided tour.

Me, my hubby and two children (aged 8 & 10) visited today (17th Aug) and it was just beautiful.
The walkway is rocky and uneven so be mindful of this. So many artifacts and stunning pieces. Stairs are quite steep. I love history so it's been one of my favourite spots. Don't visit without stopping off.
Entrance fees are:
adults €5
Senior €4
Student £3
Family €13
Kids go free.

Loved the Donegal Castle.
It was actually the first castle that we receive information in Greek, which we appreciated greatly.
Small but well preserved.

Lough Eske Castle is a luxury hotel situated in a restored 17th-century castle. It has a spa, an indoor pool and fine dining. The hotel's gardens are beautiful and the rooms are modern with smart bathrooms.
Just back from 2 night stay & we had a wonderful stay! The staff were helpful & friendly, not was too much. The grounds were beautiful but due to the Irish weather wasn't able to enjoy it to the fullest. The bedroom was spacious & luxurious. The food was tasty & delicious. The spa facilities was amazing. definitely do the afternoon tea if you get the catch. I would highly recommend the hotel & can't wait to go back.

We have been coming to Lough Eske castle for many years now. The absolute highlight of this five star hotel are the staff and the immaculate grounds. Renovated in 2007 the rooms are showing their age with wear and tear and I truly believe in the next few years a few more renovations are absolutely essential. The hotel has a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere surrounding it with staff welcoming you with open hearts. The massage treatments we receive are some of the best we have ever had…and we’ve had a few. The breakfast is wholesome and hearty and the dinner in the evening is outstanding. Our kids and family loved every moment. A relaxed and tranquil stay in a solid five star hotel.
Colin Service — Google review
The staff were very warm and welcoming and always eager to please. The service was excellent in all aspects of our stay from reception, waiters, bag handlers etc.
The hotel itself is very pretty, very clean and drips character at every turn.
If you smoke or vape there's no sheltered areas outside the bars so if its raining your only option is to go to the restaurant, which isn't ideal.
Spa was excellent and the staff lovely, not to mention very well informed and helpful.

A must stay! Give yourself time here to really enjoy the ambience and everything the castle has to offer. We stayed in the O’Donnell suite overlooking the fountain and castle entrance. It was hands down a highlight of our trip. Spa was great, we did the thermal treatment with the outdoor hot tub. Plenty of paths to walk (or bike) the grounds. The bar is open late and Alan is a grand time, shout-out Alan! Gerard and Michael were helpful with our bags and bikes. Charlene was very welcoming when we checked in really late. Just book your stay here! You won’t regret it.

We went on spa at Lough Eske yesterday and had the most amazing time. The grounds and entrance provide a grand yet peaceful location. The facilities were just beautiful for the spa and the staff were lovely. Treatments were delightful and Shea happily drove one of our guests with mobility issues to and from the castle. We then enjoyed lunch in the castle bar, to our delight. A wonderful experience and can't wait to return for a long weekend. Thanks to all at Lough Eske. They've earned every star! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

We celebrated our wedding here 11 years ago and we return yearly to celebrate the anniversary. As always, the warm, genuine welcome, beautiful surroundings and gorgeous food make for a brilliant stay.
We have just returned from another perfect visit.
The rooms are beautiful, bar and restaurant are perfect and the spa service is excellent.
As always, it was fantastic to see so many friendly, familiar faces. Geraldine on reception, Johnny in the restaurant, Leona in the bar, along with Donal, Stephen and the rest of the team all made our stay exceptional. We cannot recommend Lough Eske castle enough!

We went for an afternoon tea, but unfortunately we arrived late. We decided to stay for coffee and some desserts from their menu instead.
The coffee and the desserts where superb, very well presented, however the service was very slow and not very proactive. We had to walk us in, and also had to stand up and walk to the waiter and order.
But other than that, the place is nice.

This is a lovely and well located venue. However, ownership must recognize that not having heat (and the portable heater not functional!) is NOT acceptable at this price point. The massage service, btw, was excellent!

My partner and I have just returned from a fantastic two night stay at Lough Eske.
From the welcome at check in with Geraldine and Gerard, to the fantastic service in Cedars restaurant from Johnny James and team, everything was top notch.
We had the afternoon tea which was a nice treat and the spa treatments in CARA were fantastic.
We would highly recommend the food in Cedars - absolutely first class and the best fillet steaks we have ever had. Breakfast was also great and would advise you try the eggs royale.
Thank you for making our anniversary so special!

Nice hotel hidden away in secluded grounds. Rooms were generous size, clean and comfortable. Staff throughout were very pleasant. However, we had very poor service for food in the Father Browne Bar. We decided to eat there as pizza was on offer for a fussy eater. A number of other families with kids decided the same. There was only one staff member assigned to do both the bar service and food service. Food was being delivered from upstairs. It took 2 hours for 2 courses. Side order never came. One of the pizzas came with rocket instead of Roquefort. Not what we would have expected from a 5 star hotel. It may have been an off night, but we would suggest the bar for drinks only and eat in The Gallery or the main restaurant.

Our stay here was fabulous!. The room was clean and gorgeous with immense space. For dinner we ate at the restaurant on location and it was excellent, food was exceptional and what made it better was how friendly the staff was. I enjoyed how personal they were and willing to converse. After dinner the bar was open and our bartender was fun to talk to and was not pushy nor judgmental with our drink choices. Overall a great stay!

We went here for afternoon tea. The staff were friendly, attentive, and very helpful. I was blown away by the gluten-free options at afternoon tea. I was really expecting the same old gluten-free dry scones and bread, but no, it was amazing. The atmosphere was lovely with a gentleman playing piano. I will definitely be back!

Completely picturesque setting. The whole drive up is beautiful. Inside the hotel is no exception and the staff are some of the most welcoming and attentive we've ever met. We stayed in a deluxe guest room and it was immaculately clean and comfortable. The only downfall was the WiFi, which we needed for work, it was very slow and disconnected often but we were able to overlook this as everything else was perfect. Just to note that the spa and pool were in a separate outside building which we weren't aware of but it wasn't an issue for us. Food in the lounge bar was very limited in terms of a dinner menu, as there was a private event in the father browne bar which was disappointing, however the food was still very good and we called back in the evening for some cocktails. Highly recommend for couples and even families as we would visit again with our kids.

Beautiful venue! Came for a friends wedding. Everyone was so friendly. When going to the upstairs bar, you need to be sat down to order you can't go to the bar. Outside terrace was lovely as it was a gorgeous day, some quite uneven paving stones to be careful of. Only 15mins from donegal Town centre

A truly delightful one night stay in a beautiful setting. The stay from beginning to end exceeded my expectations. The drive up the private road to the Castle was lovely, upon seeing the building we knew we made a great choice. The moment we arrived we were greeted by friendly, professional staff who valet our car and took our bags and us to the check in desk and then to our rooms. The rooms were huge and well furnished and the bathrooms were spacious and comfortable with both a standup shower and huge tub, double sinks and private water closet. The grounds are well maintained, the English Gardens are stunning. The guided tour offered to the guests was very informative and entertaining as well. Each exquisitely decorated room rich with history. We enjoyed cocktails and appetizers in the gorgeous bar. The spa was very impressive as well. A walk to the Lake is worth the trip to view its simple beauty. A pricey stay but so worth the experience.

This could not of been a more perfect stay from beginning to end. As soon as you drive up you are greeted and bags are serviced to your room as well as valet parking. Red carpet in the entrance makes a grand statement. Staff all over is friendly and helpful. The room is massive with plenty of amenities to enjoy. The grounds themselves are a spectacle to enjoy. It was a pleasure to dine in and have a fantastic meal. Breakfast is amazing. If you are looking for a 5 star experience in a castle, come here.
Heather — Google review
Room was spacious and furnishings good 5-star quality. Bathroom was very large. But the window curtains were damaged and hard to draw; the bathroom heating rack was out of order.
Front desk staff and doorman were very pleasant and efficient.
Public areas very nicely done in Gentleman’s Club style, with working fireplaces and paneled walls, full button-down leather Chesterfields. The hotel should spend for real oil paintings instead of photographic reproductions printed on canvas.
Food & Beverage management is remiss. Servers in The Lounge were poorly trained, diffident; one looked unkempt bordering on slovenly. Hamburger was atrocious. The fine-dining Cedars Restaurant had good food and well-considered wine pairing recommendations, but the interior decor was quite ordinary, not in keeping with the price range.

This is a very memorable location to stay at! From the first sight of the castle to every employee being genuinely kind and helpful this place is top notch. The employees do not care who you are, they treat everyone like royalty! The courtyard room we stayed in was very spacious and luxurious without being gaudy. The bed was extremely comfortable leading to one of the best nights of sleep I can remember. Walking the castle grounds was relaxing. The view of the castle at night was equally as impressive as the daytime. Some things are worth the price, this is one of them.
Well done to everyone at Lough Eske Castle, well done!
I will stay here again if I ever get back to Ireland.

Castle is a little hidden gem. Bigger than it looks and all kinds of rooms to plop yourselves in and admire the paintings and chandeliers or read a book. Also the food and drink menu were superb. We ate in the Gallery Lounge in front of the fireplace. Our room was in the stables overlooking the gardens. So cute and unique! A big shout out to the 2 concierges, Shea and Dylan! Both were so inviting and provided the history of castle. Both urged us to go explore Slieve League, the highest maritime cliffs in Ireland. We had a fantastic hike and are now enjoying our pints as a reward!

What a lovely hotel, great location and friendly staff.
I stayed in 108, the room pretty big and elegantly kitted out.
The steam room next to the pool needs updating, but apart from that its a great place for 1 or 2 nites.

Ate this evening in the bar as we have done many times before the food was lovely but the service was just awful! They were very busy but the waiter just appeared to forget about us, even though he looked in our direction several times however he was very very attentive to his American guests! It’s a shame because the guests he bent over backwards for tonight, will probably never return, whereas we visit (did) several times a year. We did want dessert but ended up leaving as he never came back. I left feeling so disappointed and in doubt as to whether I’d return again after years of having had many dinners, stays and parties here as this is now the second time the service has been poor, the last time being several months ago before tonight! Such a shame, hope the service improves for ALL guests as it was one of my favourite places.

This was a spectacular property! Off the beaten path, but in a place you will want to visit. Every staff member was outstanding. From the person directing us as we drove towards the rear entrance on our arrival to the person who unloaded the luggage, the team that checked us in and finally, Shea Kildea, who is everything a concierge is suppose to be! Shea was friendly, funny, knowledgeable and energetic about assisting our visit to the area. The property is stunning. The castle, the decor and especially the sculpture garden. The bar area was welcoming and provided a wonderful spot to have a pint and complete some work. Cedars restaurant provided the best meal of our week in Ireland.

Wonderful experience! The property is beautiful and the staff are very warm and helpful. The specialty cocktails are very good and the lounges are comfortable to relax in for a while. The afternoon tea is also fantastic.
The Abbey of Donegal, situated at the confluence of River Eske and Donegal Bay, is a historic monastery established in 1474 by Red Hugh O'Donnell and his wife Lady Nuala. The ruins of the abbey, located 26 km south of Diamond, are an awe-inspiring sight and dominate the surrounding landscape. For over a century, it served as a significant center for religion and education until the early 17th century.
A ruined monastic settlement on the river running to the sea.
Not much remains of the monastery, and the graveyard that surrounds it has risen the level of the ground so high that the cloister windows are now half buried. But it is a calmly picturesque place. It is free to enter and gives great views of the ruins and the river.

The Donegal Railway Heritage Centre is housed in a historic Station house constructed in 1889 and contains numerous collected artifacts and memorabilia. Train enthusiasts will appreciate the restored carriages on display that are used for various events, workshops, seasonal activities, and vintage tea parties. The museum presents an informative overview of the once extensive rail network spanning across Co Donegal with intricately crafted handmade models of local stations. A must-visit destination to learn about the fascinating history of railways in the area.

Had a wonderful tour of this place, followed by a video that showed how the railway looked in the 1950s. This was well worth a visit, and you can tell that the volunteers really care about the history and future of the town. They talked about potential future plans, and I agree that a scenic railway would be a beautiful addition and invaluable resource for the local community. I really hope they can get these plans off the ground!

A little gem. This is such a fabulous little find !!! The admission is €5/€4 or €13 for a family - bargain. There's a few interactive things for children, a 50 min video for adults, and old fashioned children's games to play. Little museum rooms to look at, a miniature gauge ride (only 100 yds forward then back). 3 or 4 old carriages, and the locomotive to stand in. All set in the old station house. It's small, but brilliant. And we were made so welcome.

I literally fell in love with all the works he had on display and I was fascinated by the multi-stage creative process, from the creation of the color palette to the "painting" made with the same colors created. The final touches with the sewing machine give an unexpected three-dimensionality and an exceptional rendering of the smallest details. Absolutely worth visiting!

Murvagh Beach is a pristine sandy beach that has been granted Blue Flag status due to the exceptional quality of its water. This beach spans around 4.5 kilometers and is situated on the west coast of County Donegal. Murvagh Beach boasts lifeguards during peak season, namely June through August, making it a safe and enjoyable location for a swim or stroll. The sand dunes behind the beach are designated as a Special Area of Conservation, contributing to its natural beauty.
This beach must be one of Ireland's best kept secrets. It is a huge stretch of golden sand washed by the Atlantic Ocean. We walked along it for miles not seeing anyone else. The backdrop is sand dunes and beyond forest. The emptiness and peace were quite overwhelming in an amazingly beautiful setting. The imagination was allowed to run riot with uninhibited openness. The absence of any human impact was so noticeable save a concrete pill box like structure which seem almost alien in such an original environment. It is an experience not be missed.

It's a nice place for a quick walk and stroll along the shore. The bridge kinda thing on the entrance just makes the way to the beach so beautiful. Though this place doesn't have many visitors, it's a nice place for a little break from day to day work. It is accessible by car, bike, bicycle and you can park it outside on the entrance and walk for about 20 30 mins to the beach or you can also drive your car to the very end or the entrance of the beach and park it there. I would recommend taking your car to the very end saving your time to walk so that you can enjoy the beauty of the beach and admire the colours of sunset.

Amazing beach. Blue Flag and lovely stretch of about 2km for walking, playing, running and whatever you want.
There are two entry points, one as you approach the coast straight at cul de sac and then another about a one kilometre if you turn right and head to the main car park via narrow road between the dunes.
Please be responsible and take trash while you leave. Respect nature and people around you - some of the visitors treat it like a one stop shop for noise and litter, the leave - don’t be one of these guys. Also clean after the dogs, there’s nothing worse than come to the beach just to step on some poop and get your nerves pop.

Murvagh is a clean, sandy beach, about four and a half kilometres long, on the west coast of County Donegal. The beach, which has been awarded Blue Flag status, is backed by sand dunes, which are designated as a Special Area of Conservation and then by Murvagh Forest.
Murvagh Beach is located on the south west coast of County Donegal. It’s a 15-minute drive from Ballyshannon and Donegal Town and a 20-minute drive from Bundoran.
There’s only one road up to Murvagh Beach and – thankfully! – there’s a big old car park right at the end (here on Google Maps). A sandy path on the western side of the car park will then take you straight to the beach.
