This is a popular walk on Madeira Island, with visitors loving the fantastic waterfall and lagoon at the end. This hike can be combined with another nearby, Levada do Risco, which is short and easy. The hike takes around 3-4 hours and should take you around 9 km. There are 25 springs on this walk, with only a little water flowing in August. The highlight of the walk is a pool which has 25 springs pouring into it.
Interesting nature and beautiful views. Big plants and small birds. Looks somehow like Jurassic Park 🙂 it's quite a lot hiking though, 12 km if you want to see the basics. I recommend to take the hike with an local guide, we wouldn't recognize many plants by our selves. It's very wet and can be cold, so recommend to dress accordingly.

Good walk down from the car park. 500+meters elevation change, the parking is at the high point. There is a mini bus that will drop you down/take you up, a little over half that height to a cafe.
Walk is through the forest with good views, along a lavada to a pool with 25 fountains, one big the rest small. Full of water when I went in January. Can be busy or very busy.
Steve Devo — Google review
It's simply stunning. We went there in December, when temperatures were not that high, and there was some rain over night, which made the waterfalls absolutely amazing. Make sure you go there early as it will get busy and some parts of the trail are just one way.

Great trip. Awesome nature of Madeira. Amazing nature, plants/flowers and of course the waterfalls. Walk wasn't very difficult so is suitable for the families with children. I can recommend for everyone.
Anna Rokitowska — Google review
Cool hike, several routs to choose from some of which were very steep and a great workout. Come prepared with waterproof clothing, you're up in the clouds on that hike. Thoroughly got soaked, was quite fun. Great views and waterfall!
Eva Valkova — Google review
They said it was a "very easy" hike, but you have to walk many stone stairs. So i really recommend you to go to the gym first 🤣
I also recommended you to start this hike before 10:00 because after that. All the tourist busses arrive and it gets very crowded. Especially on the small pads...
Oh and there is a bus that comes every 10 minutes for 3 euro that can drive you up and down the road to the parking up the hill. (40 min walk to the parking)

After yesterday's rain, we thought it would be fun to do the Levada das 25 Fontes. We walked through the Túnel do Rabaçal, hiked down the levada, then cut through to the Levada do Risco. When approaching the tunnel again to go back to the car, we discovered that the tunnel was flooded, with water up to 20 cm deep at some places! Luckily we made it back to the car in one piece, only very wet. Still we had a lot of fun doing this route.
Connie Wang — Google review
One of the most commonly known hiking route on Madeira. The hike to 25 fontes is around 4.5 km from the parking lot. Risco is around 3km. The hike is relatively easy (however there is 400m of elevation) and you can stop in the restaurant halfway down the road. There is beautiful waterfall at the end of each route.
Matej Plasko? — Google review
What a place. Was early on a rainy day there, so not many people which was nice. The nature is outstanding and it's a easy hike if you hiked already. Not so many parking before the entrance, but it's gratis. Highly recommend
Julia from the mountains — Google review
yes it is crowded depending on when you go (we arrived around 11.30am) but still very enjoyable. So you don’t miss a bit, I would recommend to take the PR6 and go by the additional loop that starts near the coffee’s toilets since it is calmer and beautiful too. After the final waterfall, you can choose to pursue your walk for around 10-15min instead of turning back on the little path after the bridge, you will find another smaller waterfall with caves, be careful because the access is narrow and there is no path (need to walk on the gutter for 2min).

Most beautiful Levada, not too difficult, good for families but also to everyone else. It provides everything you expect from such trail: the water way (Levada) itself is beautiful, you walk on a very narrow path along its side, under dense tree canopy. It is often narrow to fit only one person, while on the other side a deep drop, and sometimes a beautiful view. There are some tiring stairs sets, but not too bad. On the way back we did not climb back to PR6.1, but continued along the Levada towards Calheta road. We had to go through a 300m dark tunnel with flashlights/cellphones-lights. It was fun.
Start early! We started at around 0800. It was still dark, cloudy and chilly. But on the our way back flocks of new visitors were coming in.
Alon Melamed — Google review
We already been tired so took the 5 Euro (round trip) both way minibus from the parking lot to the start of the track - it saves 1.9km on each way. The waterfall at the end is extremely crowded, we been there at end of the season, but it still was the most crowded place.
L G — Google review
Trail exceeded our expectations.
We arrived just before 10am and the car park was quite busy already.
We walked down to the start of the trail, it took us around 40minutes (around 2km).
At the beginning of the trail there is very nice cafe, highly recommended.
Both trails 25 fontes and Risco with a breakfast break and walking from and to the car park, took us 3.5hours.
It’s definitely not very easy as there is quite a lot of steps but definitely worth it.
Alise Lieldaudziete — Google review
Easy to moderate levada trail immersed into a green forest, requires a bit of cardio on the way back. The path is very easy to follow, but it gets quite narrow toward the end. It could prove stressful for people with severe fear of heights, but overall all the sections are quite well protected. Very popular and busy, I recommend coming either in the early morning or toward the end of the day, especially for finding a parking slot.
Riccardo Rizzo — Google review
A beautifull hike. Not demanding at all if you take your time. Loved the House Rabacal and their food. All the waterfalls are amazing.
Tomaž Nartnik — Google review
Really nice and easy trail. It can get cold as it is high in the mountains so be prepared. Other than that it is well maintained and rather easy path for everyone.
Diana Siebiesiewicz — Google review
Be early (or a bit later - early afternoon) to prevent too many people. It could be very busy. There are enough parking spots but on the trail in the valley it could be very tight when it is too busy. The big waterfall is sweet. You have to walk about ~380m altitude of height on that hike.
Michael Päßler — Google review
A very nice hike. Duration 3-4 hours.
I recommend a raincoat and special hiking shoes, not flip-flops 🔝
Beautiful view and cosy atmosphere in Rabacal Nature Spot Cafe✅
Visited November 2023.
Praia da Calheta is a popular man-made beach located on the island of Madeira. Despite being constructed in 2004, it has become a favorite spot for tourists due to its imported golden sand from Morocco and warm climate. The beach offers an area of 7,300 m2 for sunbathing, swimming and water sports such as canoeing or surfing.
Nice two ended man made beach. The brake walls make it easy swimming and entry is free unless you wish to hire sun-beds. Lots and of clean toilets and a café at either end, both reasonably priced. Parking: blue bays and lines mean you must pay and display a ticket. Yellow lines are free all day. We managed to find a lay-by under the cliff that had its blue lines removed and so was free (checked with a local) plenty of blue bay parking but limited yellow and free spaces.

Calheta beach has 2 sides. I went on the first side as soon as you enter the beach. Not my kind of beach. The surface (sand) for the chairs and parasols is small, and both the sand and the water are full of rocks. I couldn't play ball with my children in the sand or in the water because my foot hurts. After that we bought shoes for the water if all the beaches in Madeira are like that with stones. Overall I liked Calheta beach for its beauty, not for its comfort and adaptation. The important thing is that my kids had fun anyway. The beach has information on the amount of UV rays during the day, it raises awareness and encourages people not to throw cigarettes in the sand, and it had a life guard watching out for everybody.
Katia van Hien — Google review
Best sand beach we visited. The sea protection creates a natural pool where the water is warmer. Perfect for family and kids. Not many rocks inside the water. Paid Parking spots available
Cristian Figueroa — Google review
Such a beautiful day at the beach, the sand is so nice and you can find shops nearby where you can buy drink or have a good meal. I recommend it!
Georgiana-Gabriela Anton — Google review
Nice constructed beach. I liked the small (right) side better because of the nice bar there. There are some stones in the sand and the sand tends to be very hot. Water/surf shoes are recommended. Sunbeds are about 2 euro's and umbrella's around 1,50 euro's.
Arjan Tholen — Google review
Great Place if you want to have a real sand beach experience at Madeira. Great beach support, beautiful place and good service. Easy to park just in front of the beach
Carlos David — Google review
Safe for child to play in the water and do a little snorkelling to see the fishes. Facilities such as toilets, shower, playground and bars available. Fairly reasonable price. To recommend!
Yibin CHEN — Google review
In my opinion by far the best beach on Madeira. It has sand on the beach and inside the sea, cheap sunbeds (2 EUR) and lots of nearby parking spots (paid). You can also park a bit up the hill for free.
Jernej Lončarič — Google review
Best beach for me in Madeira. It's peaceful outside the city and not much crowd as we went on off season. Nearby u get loads of good restaurants to have meals. Sandy beach not deep and very much child friendly. Water was little cold some days but u can have a swim.
ChathuryaK — Google review
Well, this is the kind of place for beach mood sunset, really awesome sunsets. Because of the physical location, Calheta is warmer than the rest of the island, so you will enjoy it a lot.
Only 4 stars because of the quality of the water compared to other places on the island. It is not as good as it could be. Also the sand is not very clean (lots of people on it)
Joao Teixeira — Google review
It’s real good 👍
No waves, nice yellow sand, good restaurants and bars, free WC, the supermarket is nearby, there are some sports activities.

Clean, soft sand, cheap enough sunbeds and umbrellas. Supermarket close by. Showers and Toilets also available. Great location f sunset.
Lots of parking ,incl underground.

I would appreciate lockers, but we left nearly all our things in the car, there are lot of parking spots nearby but even more people so it can get tricky to find one at times...
Over then that nice place to sunbath or refresh in water :) definitely recommend this or Machico beach for golden and Seixal for Black sand

This is a really clean manmade beach with lots of parking close by. The parking takes coins only and costs about 60 cent per hour. There are toilets and showers and also a little cafe restaurant for drinks and food. Very safe for children as there are no currents or big waves.

It's the best sand beach on Madeira. The other being in Machico, but the one in Machico is much smaller. There are also better bars and restaurants in Calheta Beach than in Machico.

Lovely small beach where the swimming area is protected from the big waves. Hôtels, restaurant and parking place nearby.
Close by, you find a variety of restaurants and also the possibility to book whale - dolphins watching tours, private or collective. There is a shop for groceries and even a car rental

Located in the Rabacal area, this hiking trail takes you through a portion of the Levada do Alecrim and leads to Lagoa do Vento, a magnificent place known for its impressive waterfall that falls from atop the rock and forms an extensive lagoon. This picturesque spot is an excellent opportunity to experience nature's power and refresh your senses. Although physically demanding, the beauty of this sight is worth the effort.
As 25 fontes was too crowded I decided to add a few more steps to our walk to see this beauty, and it was so much worth it! Nobody there at 4pm!

The waterfall is truly amazing. There are fish swimming in the pond at the base and the water is just fine.
Don't get scared by all the stairs leading to it from Levada do Alecrim, it's totally worth the detour

When we arrived at the parking lot we saw dozens of cars and we got scared, fearing the levada would have been too crowded. Thanks god most of hikers were directed to 25 fountains! Btw this hike is beautiful and not that much difficult if you look for the right information on the web: do not start from Rabaçal, please do the opposite path! While we were reaching the waterfall we saw several people climbing 300+ stairs towards us, experience that we didn't have ;))) we only had to go down these stairs, actually! When you reach Rabaçal, if you are tired you can hop on the comunal minibus (3 euros per person), that brings you back to the parking lot. Last ride: 6pm.
Mudas is a contemporary art museum in Madeira, Portugal. The building has a modern design and offers stunning sea views. It features a cafe, and the architect made clever use of space to create a great ambiance with good structure. The exhibits are usually excellent, and there are occasional concerts held there too. Although not huge, the museum is of reasonable size and requires at least an hour to see everything in detail.
Very striking building on the cliff top with cool planting and amazing views. Very photogenic! We saw an exhibition on Lourdes Castro - fascinating and well curated. My 14yo said it was one of her highlights of our week here.
E T — Google review
The museum is very inconspicuous from the road and we visited it unplanned. Upon entering the grounds, however, you are drawn to the building itself, which is stunning and offers unforgettable views of the surrounding area and the ocean.
It cost a few euros to enter and I think it's well worth it. The works on display are sometimes strange but it can certainly be a good source of inspiration. I can recommend a visit.
Be warned, no card payments were possible during our visit.

Great ambient with very good structure, the architect who designed the building was very clever in the use of the space. It’s a museum with a reasonable size. It’s not huge but it’s big, so expect to walk at least for an hour to see everything in detail. The exhibitions are almost always great. Sometimes there’s nice concerts in there too. The Levada do Alecrim hiking area is located within the Rabacal region and boasts of a rich array of indigenous plant and animal species. A picturesque waterfall and lagoon, Dona Beja, awaits visitors at the end of the trail in a serene environment perfect for picnics. The waterfall cascades down from verdant slopes forming crystalline streams while its terminus forms a natural pool ideal for swimming.
A wonderful walk with nice views and access to two waterfalls. But be aware, there are many stairs an steps, you'll have to take. Take care, that you are feeling good and healthy while starting the walk.

Stunning easy walk to a beautiful waterfall, well worth a visit.
It's not a strenuous walk, but there are some steep drops to the side of the paths, so care should be taken when on the walk as it's difficult to pass people in places.

Many visit the area for the 25 Fonts walk, but to the right of the parking area is the start of this fabulous easy walk. A flight of stone steps starts you off but following that there is a clear easy path with lovely views and culminating in a magical little glen with a lovely waterfall and pool. Not challenging, but still a walk not to be missed.

The levada takes 1 h to go and 1 to go back, it’s really easy but I went there 2 days ago and we couldn’t get to the waterfall because of a landslide.

This is nice place, but when you compare it with another awesome places it's just nice. You can walk there with kids, 4 years old made it all, 3,5 years old had be carried a little bit. The waterfall at the end it not so great, but if your stay in Madeira is longer than 7 days, you can go to see it. It was raining so maybe that's the reason why it wasn't so great for me.
Adam Muszynski — Google review
This levada is easy to navigate, mostly on flat terrain. As it winds through dense vegetation filled with trees, ferns, and lichens, you won't experience vertigo, making it an excellent choice if you're not comfortable with heights. I highly recommend exploring this levada. You can easily combine it with other hiking paths and make it back to the car park without returning on the same path. Don't forget about the waterfall at the end!
