Niigata City Aquarium Marinepia Nihonkai, situated near the sea, is a must-visit attraction featuring a dolphin show, fish-filled tunnel tank and exhibits of penguins and sea lions. The entry fee is reasonable at 1500 per adult with options to dine at their restaurant or food stall that serves slightly overpriced food. Its accessibility through bus connections from Niigata station makes it easy to reach for families with kids.
Wonderful experience!
Please visit the place, much better if you come together with your family. It's my second time around here but still i love to keep on coming back, especially watching a dolphin show. Thank you so much Niigata City Aquarium.😍💗

A wonderful experience, being able to see marine animals so close and enjoy a dolphin show. This show of dolphins and also walruses has marked schedules for better organization of the event. The place has an amphitheater to sit and enjoy the show, in the first places there is always a lot of water when the dolphins play in their acrobatic demonstration, therefore it is very fun when the person is willing to wet their clothes and laugh a lot. ...they also have a souvenir shop with stuffed animals, stationery, keychains all themed around animals found in the aquarium... it's worth going again, it's a wonderful experience 💞

This is the aquarium of Niigata City. It is actually good for family and kids specifically. You can see the different sea creatures that can be found mainly in Niigata prefecture. The place is quiet small but the ambiance is really cozy and nice

Nice small aquarium. Good for a rainy day. Nothing super special here though. The resturant here was nice and clean with good food too.

Great little aquarium with amazing displays and environments for each of the different species of marine life held there.
Dolphin show was quite entertaining too.

A great experience overall. Entry fee isn’t too extravagant at 1500¥ per adult. There’s also a restaurant and a food stall inside the area that serves (slightly overpriced) food. One thing I found remarkable is the accessibility and the view outside. It is located near the sea and I believe the shore is accessible. There is a bus connecting this attraction with Niigata station, so no worries about getting here. Very suitable for kids.

Highly recommend this place for tourist from overseas, especially with small kids. You can enjoy dolphins show, feeding to sea lion, penguins, and many local fishes! I went with my kid 2 years 8 months and he really enjoyed :)

I went there on 8/5 ( Saturday ) after Nagaoka Matsuri. The ticket cost ¥1500/ adult and I bought it in Family Mart.
I went there by C22 bus and arrived at the last station.
Although it’s Saturday but not very crowded. Many families as expected. The knowledge about light and sea’s color was interesting. And I knew about the sea area or Niigata.
The dolphin show was interesting to watch.

this is a great place. Children love to explore the ocean and its new things. having a dolphin show is also very fun. I really enjoyed it.

Very cute little place! My favorite parts were:
1. the bioluminescent squid
2. the pinniped cove (?) because the seals were SCREAMING at each other it was like a dramatic argument, but then they'd suddenly plop down asleep again. What drama queens!
3. The dolphin show!
Cameron Burris — Google review
An aquarium 50 meters away from the sea.
They have a lot of animals, but their biggest gimmick is definitely the dolphin show.
Thomas “Gametherapist” Huber — Google review
A must visit if you're a huge fan of dolphins. The dolphin show was THE highlight of the entire place. Perhaps even my entire Niigata portion of my trip. The show is a 10mins feast for the eyes as the dolphins strut and show off their stuff doing aerial tricks and frolic under water. The rest of the aquarium has the typical stuff you'd find at one. The giant main tank and other individual tanks housing the myriads of fishes and marine life. The whole aquarium is split into 4 sections. 1) The indoor tanks area. 2) The dolphin theater. 3) The seal habitat and 4) The penguin/Arctic area. I enjoyed the dolphin show so much I stayed way longer than I anticipated. (Went for 3 shows even haha)

This was a great aquarium with many interesting animals.
I especially enjoyed the area where you were allowed to (gently) touch the animals - some fish and starfish.
It was not crowded when we went, near closing time.

Great aquarium that features a different aquatic life in their environments. The dolphin show was very fun! I really enjoyed the variety of displays of the different species in different places, inside, outside, in the tube, etc. All very interesting! Well worth the price of admission!

Nice place to go with kids on a weekend to kill time.
There are lot of shows and some very nice fishes that the kids would love to watch.
It is very close to japan sea , so if you stay until close time you can watch beautiful sunset and spend some time on beach.
Very big parking lot.
Over all very nice.
Imayotsukasa Sake Brewery is a must-visit for sake enthusiasts, offering a wide variety of premium pure rice brews in elegant bottles. Housed in a 120-year-old complex blending modern design with traditional architecture, the brewery provides free tours daily, including an English tour on weekdays at 2pm and English-translated pamphlets for Japanese tours. Imayo Tsukasa takes pride in its commitment to brewing only the highest quality sake without adding extra alcohol.
It was my first time visiting a sake brewery, very enjoyable. It was nice that the group was small and we could ask questions.
Nice quick tour for English speakers. The guide was knowledgeable and well articulated.
Had the chance to take some fun pics at the end and taste a large variety of sake for an small charge (recommended). The nama sake "super fresh" which was not heat/cold treated was really good, it needs to be refrigerated and consumed within a month which makes it difficult to keep.
All sake here are junmai and there are also sake snacks/by-products for sale.

This is a very fun thing to do while in Niigata! The 30+ minute tour is free, and if you connect with the brewery on Line, you get a free limited tasting after the tour. The advanced tasting costs ¥1,000, which also felt like a good deal! The whole experience took about an hour and was a lot of fun!

Great tour of the factory by a Dutch tour guide. She explained the brewing process very good. And we had small sake tasting afterwards. Highly recommended. You can book the English tour on the website. When we went it was at 14:00.

The sake tour in this 120+ year old sake brewery was really great! And also... available in English. You can taste 15 or so different sake for 1,000 yen. I definitely recommend it when visiting Niigata.
Brent Cohen — Google review
Didn’t manage to participate in the English tour as we arrived late on a Friday afternoon but we bought some sake and tried the sake ice cream. The store was really good and even had a few testers (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) for visitors who did join the tour.
Sharing a photo of the brewery tour timings for reference!

Well worth the visit. We arrived for tour and decided to take a non English tour ( did not have time to wait for 2pm tour which is in English). Don’t speak Japanese but the tour was fun and with google Translate and English diagrams it was a great experience.
After the tour we did the 1000yen tasting which allowed you to taste 10-15 sakes. They even had non alcoholic drink to sample.
Had the sake ice cream when leaving and it was delicious and one of the best I have tried in Japan.

Nice place to have sake making and tasting store. Ice cream is good, too in such hot weather.
Staffs are nice esp. the one who speaks English. We have enjoyable experience under her introduction.

Nice little sake brewery with a good English tour. Paid the extra 1000 yen to get (14) different sake samples which was well worth it.
Highly recommended to others. English tour you need to reserve ahead of time but I didn't have any issues booking fairly last minute

This is a great place to visit. Enjoy the tour in English (2pm) or Japanese. Sample the great sake, if you are not driving, then support a great local business. The sake are excellent and well priced. Thanks for a great tour

Amazing sake and wonderful tour.
They have English speaking tours available and were super helpful.
The history is incredible and they do a wonderful job of explaining everything.
The tasting at the end is ¥1000, but you get to try 15 different sake. There is a free tasting, but only of one of their good sake and the other two were the non alcoholic.
The ¥1000 version is super worth it, and I highly suggest their supreme. 👌👌
The gift shop is wonderful and the gochapon is pretty cool too.
Highly suggest for first time visitors to Niigata.

This sake brewery is over 200 years old and has tours both in English and Japanese. The tour guides are friendly and knowledgeable and will guide you through the history and production of sake. The tour is finished with a sake tasting. Don't forget to check out the gift shop where there is a sake gashapon where you can win real sake.
Nick Torison — Google review
If you wish to join the English you will need to book in advance as there's no walk in availability and only at 2pm. I joined the Japanese tour as I didn't know I had to book the English in advance. You get an English pamphlet that explains the procedures as you tour the brewery. However as the guide and members were all Japanese when questions were asked and elaborated on you do lose all the valuable information that's being disseminated. Also there's a sake tasting course at the end of the tour. Make sure to top up for the premium ones as you'll be able to try out their award winning sakes.
Tsunderin ! — Google review
I don't speak much Japanese and we arrived around 11:05-11:10am but we were still able to join the Japanese tour. You can grab an English pamphlet from the shelf before going on the tour so it's not necessary to join the English tour (only at 2pm each day).
I tried two types of sake and the deep sea non-alcoholic rice wine (amazake) for free. The amazake tasted a little fishy, so I guess that's why they call it a deep sea one.
They sold out of some of the sake items and only had the sake bread ice cream product left. I thought it was okay. I wish that they had the soft serve because I wanted to try that one.
They also have some sake that are exclusive to the store, so they would be good as presents.
I would definitely come back if I'm in the area.

Within 20mins walk from Niigata station , this place won’t let you down .
It’s an open factory for sake making , providing free but insightful and detailed tour (English version only at 2:00 pm) for a better knowing sake making.
You can savor different kinds of sakes by only paying 1000yen(actually I forgot how much you have to pay 😅)
Of course , there are many different kinds of sakes with different quality . It’s hard to make up your mind which one you should take away with you.
I also tried the ice cream made with sake (with alcohol less than 0.5%) ….. hard to tell the taste of it . Anyway it tastes really special and yummy.😋
Tzu nung Tai (闊嘴羊) — Google review
Arrived just before they closed so wasn't able to experience the tour, but staff were very welcoming and the 1000 yen sake tasting course is certainly worth it as you get to try around 15 different bottles, including their award winning bottles which are normally rare / expensive.

It was a really fun and informative tour to learn more about sake making, the history of Imayotsukasa brewery and its passion to make good and interesting sake. Recommend those visiting to go for paid premium sake tasting where you get to sample a good selection of classic, seasonal and special edition sake. Don’t forget to pick up some sake and interesting sake snacks and products like the moist pound cake with a beautiful sake aftertaste.

English Tour is ¥400. It's was worth it. The guide speaks good English with great clarity in explaining.
Remember to make reservation.
Had sake soft cream(¥400)😋😋😋
The sake tasting session for 15 type for 30 min is well worth too. Only ¥1000.

Free observation tower with a great view and fantastic place to catch the sunset. They had an event cafe at the time we went (snoopy) though the cafe closed at 1830. The elevator with the window is on the second floor heading to the hotel Entrance on the left nearest the wall.

Beautiful views of the city and beyond. Be warned that if you go at night the lights are a bit bright so they reflect off the glass into your camera if you take a picture. At least when I went there was some private event preventing the north east side from being viewed. The rest of the view was still very nice. Also be sure to visit the toilets as the east view is visible from there!

A stretch located in Niigata where all the wineries are concentrated. It’s a pity that when we visit, the season is already over for grapes and all we see is fruitless vines.
But we visited the restaurant/ cafe and enjoyed a relaxed afternoon lunch. The ingredients used were fresh and the taste was awesome. Service was exemplary as well.

Kyū-Saitōke-bettei is a museum situated in the estate of a wealthy merchant from 1918, boasting open-air architecture and gardens that are open for tours. The entrance fee is only 300 yen, and visitors can appreciate the well-maintained historic house featuring tatami mats and an exhibit on its history. The serene atmosphere exudes a Zen vibe with breathtaking designs, making it a must-visit destination.
When I was there, the guide spoke English well enough to explain some basics, and there is English language signage as well. The garden is pretty amazing in its variety — basically the guy who built the mansion created a full Japanese garden in his backyard. Waterfalls, river, bamboo, flowers, moss, rocks, autumn colors — the whole bit.
Take a few moments to admire how the view changes depending on what window you look out from! Overall I recommend stopping by if you are in Niigata on a nice day.

I just dont want to be rude to give it 2 stars. They don't let you get into the garden that's why I think it's not worth spending time here. It's super cold floor during winter and they don't provide slippers, makes the experience worse.

I went in expecting to roam around as a foreigner but I was lucky enough to meet a woman who does tours and we spoke in English. She told me she couldn’t do the tour because she was late for a meeting, then proceeded to give me a full tour of the villa anyway! She was so kind and I was lucky to have arrived when I did because I would not have learned as much if she was not there. It is a beautiful place, but it really shows that the people make the city great. I hope to come back.

This villa was exquisite, both the traditional Japanese house and the spacious serene pond, waterfalls, rock trails, and statuary. The price for admission is negligible. There are two floors of the house to view. You are able to walk and look at your own pace. Several areas are roped off, but you are able to look into the rooms. The signage is in Japanese, but there is a brochure which is in English. You are required to wear a mask. Also, you must take off your shoes and stow them at the entrance to the villa while you tour inside. I highly recommend this heritage site.

The entire location pays homage to a previous age, from the rice storage and traditional kitchens, to the expansive tatami rooms rich with history, to the well-tended wisteria gardens that flourish in late spring, this Northern Culture Museum is an education in traditional Japanese cultural practice. Even in winter, the main garden was spectacular, but if you want to see incomparable beauty, I would recommend mid-autumn or during the spring when there are cherry blossoms, but just exploring the grounds and many rooms in the museum was an edifying and satisfying experience.

Minato Marche Pier Bandai is an energetic indoor setting that offers a variety of fresh seafood, meat, and locally sourced produce. Although smaller than the Tokyo fish market, there are still numerous excellent options available. Instead of cooked seafood restaurants, there are more sashimi and grilled fish related establishments at this location. In addition to the fish market offerings, adjacent vegetable and meat markets provide additional choices for visitors.
I was in heaven. Good sushi with thick slice of fish, lot other things to taste. All fresh and very affordable. Does not smell like other fish market. Very clean for a fish market. I recommend it. Do not miss this place. Not a very big place. Also good coffee and ice cream.

Really fresh seafood at reasonable prices. Outside area has common chairs and tables where you can eat the food you purchased from the fish market. There’s also a supermarket that sells local produce and a few restaurants and coffee places. Worth the visit. We took the city loop bus to get here.

There’s a lot of restaurant there, not only selling fish but also there’s a liquor shop, meat shop, and vegetable shop. But definitely you should try a sashimi set there, very fresh and cheap compared with Tokyo
Toki Messe is a serene escape nestled atop one of Niigata's tallest structures, offering a breathtaking retreat from the city's hustle and bustle. The Niigata Convention and Exhibition Center within Toki Messe boasts international conference halls, art galleries, restaurants, and observation rooms. Visitors can take an elevator to the 31st-floor observation room for stunning views of the Sea of Japan and Sado Island.
What a magnificent view that allows one to experience the lively metropolis of Niigata.

At the time of writing 'toki messe' is said to be the tallest building in Niigata. You can get to the 31st floor in the dedicated lift at the ground floor.
A fee is charged for the parking only. No entrance fee.
At the observation deck you'll be able to see almost 360 view of Niigata, including the harbour and airport.
imo its best to be at the top in the late afternoon and to be there untill dark to see the city lights.
There is also a restaurant and a souvenir shop at the deck. They dont allow food from outside.
Lavatory facilities are also provided at the observation deck.

Very easy to find the observation deck, and completely free. Just take the elevator up to the 31st floor — there’s a dedicated elevator so it’s easy.
Cafe on the 31st floor is pretty basic but I did have a nice Japanese pancake with some chocolate.

What a view from the 31st floor of the observation deck! You can see it’s entire views of Niigata City and Sado Island in the far distance if it’s clear weather. I’ve enjoyed watching “Portable Shrine” called Mikoshi on the boat during 2019 Niigata Matsuri Festival from here. It was well air conditioned and comfortable to stay when it was very hot outside. Uwasekigata Park is a spacious city park featuring a beautiful lake and renowned for its cherry blossoms and flowers. In addition, visitors can admire giant straw sculptures at the ongoing straw festival. The park boasts colorful playground equipment such as slides, monkey bars, and go-karts that children will surely enjoy. Take a relaxing stroll or jog around the park's vast grounds while admiring the full bloom of cosmos flowers this season.
This season is the best time to see the full bloom of cosmos flowers. It is so lovely and I even took a lot of pictures. The straw festival is on-going too, you may able to see work of art using straws . The park is wide and spacious for walking or jogging. The kids may enjoy at the playground that has colorful slides, monkey bar and even go-kart too. We were lucky to see the swans relaxing just beside the pond. I like the park and I enjoyed so much because of the lovely cosmos field.

People living close by are lucky to have an excellent place to walk or run.
There's always a spot to rest (I'd prefer under the trees) when you get tired.
We were lucky to see the very beautiful sunflowers. The flowers were small, but they were gorgeous. We were right on time.
They have started building the annual straw art. We were only able to see three structures that were still incomplete.

The Bandai Bridge is a contemporary and structurally advanced concrete bridge with six arches that spans across the Shinano River. It is a renowned landmark known for its modern design. The area surrounding the bridge evokes nostalgia, particularly in the evening, and offers an enjoyable experience strolling along the banks of the river. The fresh air in this serene location creates a calm and peaceful atmosphere for visitors to enjoy.
Nostalgic place especially in evening. Walking around bridge and banks of river is really enjoyable.
Mukesh Dangol — Google review
A signature bridge in Niigata city. It doesn’t look particularly spectacular but you can recognise that it is a historical, old style bridge. I visited a history museum before I saw this bridge, so that might have made me appreciate this bridge more. Otherwise, this might just appear to be a simple old bridge. The scenery I saw from the bridge was beautiful anyway.

I understand this bridge is an important symbol in Niigata but there's nothing particularly interesting or impressive about it. If I had not read that it's considered a "site" I would not have thought twice about it. If you visit Niigata and go around the city you will inevitably pass by or over it, but I wouldn't go out of your way to visit it.
The Niitsu Railway Museum is a small but interesting museum that showcases the history of the town's railway in Japan. The exhibits include classic steam locomotives and modern bullet trains, as well as a mini-railway for children to enjoy. The museum is conveniently located about 1500 metres from the train station and can be easily accessed by foot or bus for a small fee.
This is a nice, little train museum.
This museum focuses on the history of Niitsu, and the importance the town played for the railroad in Japan.
Lots of neat artifacts and displays. There's a shinkansen and locomotiive outside.
The museum is about 1500 metres from the train station, so it's walk able. There's also a bus for a couple hundred yen.
By the way, it's the building on the right that's behind the outdoor exhibitions. When you enter, simply buy a ticket from the vending machine and hand it to the employee.

Niigata City History Museum is an impressive structure that showcases local history through exhibits and artifacts. The museum offers lectures and special programs, including music from past centuries and demonstrations of traditional house-building methods. While most exhibits are in Japanese, there is an English audio guide available. However, the information provided may be insufficient and visitors may need to use additional resources to fully grasp the content. Overall, the museum is a great opportunity to learn about Niigata's heritage.
It's very interesting. Everything is so well made. The only problem is that there are many things not translated in English, but you can still understand what it is. It's filled with big and small realistic models to show things about the past. There are many special things to see. You can listen to music from the past century or learn how the houses were build.

Not much people inside, small place and I stayed for 1 hour only.

This time of the year, I bumped into few locals carrying some picnic essentials so I assume, it is allowed at certain areas.

It is not a big museum, but sufficient for you to learn about Niigata history. The exhibitions seem a little old but kept well maintained. The location is a little bit far from the city centre but you can get there with the one day bus ticket, which also gives you a small discount for the entry. Admission by itself is already quite cheap though.

Hakusan Park (白山公園, Hakusan-kōen) is a park in Chūō-ku, Niigata, Niigata Prefecture, Japan.
The 1964 Niigata earthquake caused the sandy soil under the city to liquefy, damaging many city facilities. The aging baseball stadium was converted to an earthquake memorial using funds from the earthquake disaster relief money. This is currently the Niigata Prefectural Hall.
From the 1990s, aging facilities were demolished. A riverside picnic site covering approximately 7 hectares was created, and north and south bound traffic was diverted under the park via a tunnel.
Other facilities in the park, such as :
1. Hakusan Shrine
2. Niigata Prefectural Government Memorial Hall
3. Niigata City Music and Culture Hall
4. Niigata-City Performing Arts Center (Ryutopia)
5. Niigata Prefectural Civic Center
6. Niigata City Municipal Gymnasium

(Translated by Google) You can see swans this season
Groundwater is flowing from Mt. Kakuda, and the number of swans is counted every year at the junior high school next door. Apparently some places are designated under the Ramsar Convention.
I asked a person who came for bird watching to show me the photo. It was so beautiful~See you next year~

Niigata Senbei Oukoku, also known as the Rice Cracker Kingdom, offers a unique experience for visitors to get hands-on with the traditional Japanese snack. At this attraction, you can witness the rice cracker-making process and even try your hand at roasting and decorating your own giant rice cracker. While there is a fee for this activity, it provides an entertaining and educational experience. Additionally, visitors can explore the souvenir store and visit the Bakauke shrine on-site.
I tried to make Senbei Okoku for the first time by learning to make it here. Someone taught me how to make it. It was fun, giving me the experience of making traditional Japanese desserts made from rice, lightly grilled and seasoned with various flavors. It depends on each person's formula. Can also draw various pictures.Wait for it to cool. When you're done, package it up to give as a souvenir. The package is very cute. The taste is crispy. Salty according to the taste of soy sauce. It's similar to Thai crackers.

Fun diversion going through the more suburban parts of Niigata. Many people eat rice crackers without giving a second thought how they are made. And, of course, everything is automated these days, but it's fun to step an create one for yourself, and that's exactly what the Niigata Senbei Oukoku allows you to do. All the materials are set out for you, and the helpers demonstrate how to go through each step in the process until you get a lovely personalized rice cracker to enjoy before you indulge in eating the fruit of your rice cracker labor. It's an excellent part of a family outing, but parents will definitely need to help the little ones because of the amount of heat from the tables used to cook the rice crackers. The entire experience was fun, but the only reason not a 5-star review is the near complete absence of an English guidance in the case a visitor doesn't really understand Japanese. With a guide/friend, this will be an experience to remember.

¥3,700 taxi fare from Niigata station. This place is isolated and beside buying snacks and an unique experience of creating our own cracker, there isn’t much else after 10min. 5 star for customer service. 3 star for distance/rewarding experience.

Know what you’re getting into here. There is ONE giant window where you can watch 1-2 workers making some of the rice crackers. That’s kind of fun and it is free. Behind you is a “Taiken” place (“experience”) where for ¥1500 you can grill and decorate your own giant rice cracker. I suppose it’s fun but I’ve done stuff like this before. Doing it will not get you a factory tour or anything.
Next door is a large souvenir store, and a small fun Bakauke shrine (that’s the name of their best selling cracker). That’s really all you can do here. It’s fun for what it is. If you really take your time, you could spend an hour. If you move quickly, 15 minutes is all you need. Know this before planning a day around it!

It's only a small store. You can make your own senbei here though. Which is a neat experience. But I was just expecting more to see and/or read. They had many buildings but only one you could go in. The staff was super nice and helped us call a taxie. Plus we got a gift box of senbei free when we checked out, it was a big box...very nice service. (It was anpaman packages)

We had a lot of fun making our own senbei. It took maybe 20ish mins total. They also gave us a couple large boxes full of various rice cracker products for free!

You get to grill your own big rice cracker (For a fee). Get to see how the rice crackers are made. It's a fun experience. Get to buy Niigata exclusive rice crackers. Since Niigata is known for its rice, Niigata's rice crackers would make the best gifts. Though the place is a bit rural, must be willing to walk. Visit it if you are in Niigata and like rice crackers.

Great experience for families, friends, and couples. Buy specialty and rare senbei crackers direct from the source. The place is quite small and hours were a bit short but it was fun.
There are three types of hands on experiences you can do. Kids and adults welcome! Paint, grill, and flavor a large rice cracker, a smaller one (size of face), or flavor pre-made with different spices. The cafe had really good croquette and cute soft cream. You’d spend about 20 minutes there just walking around and about 50min if you try one of the experiences.
