Cape Nosappu, located in the easternmost part of Japan, is a picturesque destination that boasts breathtaking views and a quaint lighthouse. Although it may not be as stunning on rainy days, visitors can take shelter in a nearby hut to protect themselves from lightning strikes. On clear days during winter months, one can see the northern territories of Russia from this location. Overall, Cape Nosappu is a serene spot with unique geographical significance for Japan that offers beautiful sights to its visitors.
A great location with many seagulls, the most east part of Hokkaido/ Japan, was a bit crowded but very nice place to visit.
They say you can see some aurora from the tower.

December 2023
Was very windy at the time of visit.
Don't forget to bring an umbrella, as it is snowy in the mainland, here it'll rain.
If you want to see the seas frozen, I'd suggest coming in mid to late winter.
Bus is about 40min from Nosappu station.
Round trip about 2,000yen. If you don't know which ticket to buy, ask the staff, they'll provide help very kindly.
Great place to learn about the Kuril Islands.

A great place to visit for its history and the meaning it has for Japanese people for 2 reasons:
- The 4 islands in front of the cape were occupied by Russians after the WWII and never returned
- the Easternmost point of Japan
The landscape itself is nothing very special, there are more majestic capes in Hokkaido.

Beautiful lighthouse and stunning sights; you can feel the strong emotions of the Japanese people regarding the return of the Northern Territories. I stand with Japan; the Northern Territories are 100% Japanese territory. 🇯🇵

Question: Which country is closest to Japan?
South Korea? China?
The answer is Russia. Only 3.7 km from Shell Island(Kaigara Jima), illegally occupied by Russia (former Soviet Union) since August 1945.
It's not easy to see Shell Island, but you can easily spot the very flat Crystal Island (Suisho Jima), 7km away from Japan.
All visitors to Hokkaido should visit Cape Nosappu and know that there are many dangers of Japan being invaded by Russia.

This place is obviously special for Japan, but less for the eyes. Especially on a extremely rainy day. You can shelter in the little hut just behind the lighthouse to avoid being turned into dust by a lighting.

The easternmost point of Japan, definitely worth a visit if you are around.
In November 2018, visitors to Cape Ochiishi were advised to be cautious of stone splashes along the unpaved roads. While driving by car is possible, there are no designated parking lots and cars must be parked near the end of the road. A solar power generation facility was being constructed along the way and it was suggested that a parking lot should be created to accommodate tourists.

・There were less than 10 people I passed each other.
・Honestly, it is less well-known than the northernmost and easternmost capes, but it is a hidden gem and there are not many people around, and the feeling of accomplishment and wonderful scenery when you reach the cape will soothe your soul.
・Sometimes the weather isn't great, but luckily it's sunny and it gets really hot on the 25-minute road from the car park.
・There was also a wild deer on the way, and it was watching closely and wary of me, probably with a fawn. Please do not approach them unnecessarily.

At the unmanned station, the platform is also very simple with wood grain. The phrase "Japan's easternmost station" is posted everywhere in the station, and you can feel that you have come to the farthest land. However, surprisingly few people get off at this station, and when I visited there, only two passengers got off (it seems that many of them boarded until Nemuro Station, the last stop). Although it is indeed the "easternmost station", it does not seem to be a famous tourist destination.

When I arrived there, my impression was of vast expanses of land and grassland as far as the eye could see, and a vast expanse of ocean.
The weather was clear and the view was spectacular, but I was naive and thought it was the end of October and neglected to take precautions against the cold. As a result, I wanted to stay for a long time, but I was starting to feel a bit chilly, so I left before evening. We arrived at 9:30am and left around 3:30pm.
As a hobby, I really enjoy photographing landscapes and drawing simple landscape paintings on the spot. As a result, you tend to forget the time.
As for the meal, we had it at Keboen. Salmon roe bowl set meal. It was very delicious. If you have a chance to go here, please stop by. You'll understand when you actually try it.
They also had a wide variety of souvenirs available.
By the way, I went there without knowing the meal times, so it was after hours (preparations were in progress), but I was guided to the dining room and was able to enjoy my meal.
I was really hungry, so I was really happy.
Although it is far away, I would like to visit again if I have a chance.

A medium-sized chalk tower-shaped lighthouse standing at the tip of Cape Nosappu
50 lighthouses in Japan
It is located at the easternmost point of Japan, excluding the Northern Territories and Minamitorishima.
It is an octagonal wooden structure designed by Richard Henry Blanton, known as the ``father of lighthouses,'' and is the first Western-style lighthouse in Hokkaido.
The Canal Channel, which lies between here and Suisho Island, has many shallow reefs and is feared as a difficult place for navigation, so the construction of a lighthouse was called for.
A lighthouse of great historical importance.

Shunkunitai is a nature reserve located on a coastal sandspit and traversed by boardwalks. The protected area is home to several species of birds, including the white-tailed eagles and Japanese cranes. The boardwalks provide an opportunity for visitors to observe these majestic creatures in their natural habitat without disturbing their delicate ecosystem. Shunkunitai offers a unique experience for nature enthusiasts looking to immerse themselves in the beauty of this pristine environment while respecting its conservation efforts.

Mystical, a sense of the end of this world, a different dimension...
I was able to enjoy a unique atmosphere that I don't know how to describe.
The wooden path of Hibari Course, which is right from the parking lot, was closed to traffic, but the detour on the sea side is easy to walk and I don't feel any inconvenience.
The northern fox course and red spruce course beyond that can be walked on wooden paths, so sneakers are OK.
I wanted to walk on the dirt road section of the Red Fox Course, so I rented rain boots at the nature center.
There are parts of the trail that are muddy, so it might be difficult to walk without rain boots, but I think you can enjoy the wooden path alone.
On this day, the sky was cloudy and there was a thin layer of fog, making the atmosphere even more magical.
If the weather had been nice, I think we would have been able to enjoy a different view.
The atmosphere seems to change depending on the season, weather, and time of day.
It took less than 2 hours to walk slowly through the Skylark Course, Red Fox Course, and Red Spruce Course.

Five stars for the staff who was extremely friendly. Thank you, local obatchan’s, you are the best!

This is the easternmost shrine in all of Japan. The white torii gate matches well with the tall tower in its background.

(Translated by Google) Although the shrine building is new, it gave the impression of being deserted. I think it's for administrative reasons, but it's a shame that there's no place to put money into it. The stone monument inside the temple grounds that says ``Return the Northern Territories'' feels unnatural.

(Translated by Google) Although it is a place with very strong winds, it was well maintained. On the way between the torii gate and the shrine, there was a stone monument that read ``Return the Northern Territories.'' The inside of the torii gate is the realm of the gods, but I don't understand the meaning behind setting up this stone monument here. I feel like politics is being used for Shinto teachings, which is very disappointing.

To the right is Bokyo no Misaki Park and Kitagatakan, and behind it is Cape Nosappu Lighthouse and Cape Nosappu. The Peace Tower can be seen behind the shrine. Temperature 7 degrees C, windy and cold. White torii gate, gravel approach. On the left is a large gray material warehouse, ``Return the Northern Territories Monument,'' and a hand washing stone. There is a shrine building with a dark brown roof in the back of the front. There is not a single tree in the precincts, only grass. I pray that the Northern Territories will return soon.
