Ritsurin Garden is a well-known 1700s garden located in Takamatsu, Japan. It took the feudal lords of the Takamatsu domain 100 years to build this Japanese landscape garden, which features formal landscaping, ponds, bridges, and a teahouse. The garden is home to a thousand pine trees and has been designated as a special scenic place of beauty by the national government.

A peek into the Ritsurin Gardens in Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture. There are many beautiful sakura scattered around this sprawling Japanese Garden.Courtesy Wikipedia: Ritsurin Garden is a large, historic garden in Takamatsu, Japan. It was completed in 1745 as a private strolling garden and villa for the local feudal lords and opened to the public in 1875. Ritsurin is one of Japan’s most extensive strolling gardens.
Ritsurin Garden lies in a former river bed on the east side of Mt. Shiun. Numerous ponds and small artificial hills dot the garden. The southern portion is in traditional Japanese style, with historic teahouses and numerous shaped pine trees. After becoming a public garden in 1875, the north portion underwent Western-style redesigns.
The buildings in the garden date back to the early 17th century. In 1625, the feudal lord of Takamatsu in Sanuki Province, Ikoma Takatoshi, began the construction of Ritsurin, specifically the building of a garden around the South Pond using the beautiful greenery of Mt. Shiun ("Purple Cloud Mountain") as a backdrop. After Matsudaira Yorishige took control of the province, he continued the garden's construction. The Fifth Lord Yoritaka completed work in 1745 after 100 years of improvements and extensions made by successive lords.
The new Meiji government came to power in 1868 and requisitioned the garden. Despite an initial proposal to build a silk mill, Ritsurin was designated a prefectural park and opened to the public on 16 March 1875. In 1953, the garden was established as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty.

Beautiful and tranquil Japanese garden. Should take about 1.5 to 2 hrs to walk the whole park. Road is flat and easy to walk. There are few different tea houses in different parts of the park for you to take a break.
Was too early for cherry blossoms at the time of visiting, but was able to see plum blossom which was magnificent.
Worth paying a small ticket price to enter the park.

Many nice scenery corners where you can feel close to the natural.
There are a lot of pine trees with different sizes and shapes

Beautiful and worth seeing! Its only 400¥ to enter and if you speak Japanese a guide can give you a tour with insights! It was so relaxing and the park it absolutely beautiful! Takes around an hour to discover it!

One of the most beautiful gardens we have been in Japan. Worth the side trip if you are planning to also visit Hiroshima.
Our allotted time was only 2hrs and we hade to rush to the exit just to get to our train.
Plan more than 2hrs and enjoy the relaxing view and fresh air!

This garden is a must visit if you are in Takamatsu. We went during cherry blossom season which made the garden even more stunning!

It was a pleasant walk around the garden.
Many cherry blossoms were not blooming yet as of today (22 Mar 2023), not sure if you are able to do a picnic here, but it would have been nice if you could.
You can opt for a boat ride when you are inside, at an additional fee of about 600+ yen.
Definitely a nice place to have some photos taken. 🤗

Sakura in full bloom, light up. Serene , relaxing place and not too crowded even on a weekend You can get in and out of the garden as long as the ticket is for that day. Try the chestnut soft cream, it's good.

Even though some of the areas at this garden were under refurbishment, there were still many beautiful areas that were accessible. The ponds surrounded by perfectly trained trees were gorgeous. There are a few nice bridges as well. We really enjoyed feeding the fish and turtles with food that is available to buy inside the park.

The most magnificent garden I have ever seen. Ever step you take, every corner you turn, there lies the perfect composition. Point your camera in any direction and your picture is framed for you. One of the most beautiful places in the world.

On March 30, 2023, my wife and I visited the garden for the first time. When compared with other Japanese gardens, this one stood out as it could be interactive. We wanted to try the boat cruise but couldn’t afford to wait for hours for the available one. We ate udon at the most scenic spot instead.

A nice place to visit, east outdoor parking is spacious and kind staff would guide you to available lot (100 yen for every 25 mins). Admission fee is required and there are various pine trees and houses for rest and old times stories. Autumn and Spring should be best seasons though winter would be wonderful also. Sun protection is suggested if go at summer times.

It is probably the most beautiful garden I've visited in a one-month trip to Japan. The whole place is quite big so allow at least a couple of hours to fully appreciate it. There are two different routes to follow but the map is very well detailed. Takamatsu is not on the common tourist itinerary, so the garden was not crowded at all.
David Reali — Google review
A very gigantic japanese park where you can ride a wooden boat in its pond.
The landscape was nice but some boredom due to a similarity.
The pond view was the best one
You should have around 2-3 hours to finish it all.
The parking was very limited and mostly full.
Public transportation may be a good choice.

One of the best gardens I have visited in Japan. Highly recommended by locals for anyone visiting Takamatsu. Do allocate at least 2 hours here for a thorough visit. You can participate in the rubber stamp collection activity around the gardens and exchange for gift once you are done.

A Kagawa-Ken Iconic Landmark. Not as big as most Japanese gardens but just as charming and infused with local history. A must-see for any visitor to Kagawa.

Opens every day. Entrance fee is 410yen/adult. There are over 1,400 pine trees in the garden. Some of the pine trees are over 300 years old. The garden faces Mt. shiun -zan. The garden is divided into South and North garden. The South garden is a typical Japanese garden whereas the North garden is a Western garden. Be prepared to walk a lot. You can rest your tired legs by having tea at the tea house. Or you can have a boat ride.

It is not one of the Great Three Japanese gardens, but it should be. Wonderful garden impeccably maintained. Not as easily accessible as the other gardens but perhaps for it, since it is not as crowded.
Shikoku Village is an open-air architectural park in the northeast of the city, showcasing historic buildings from the Edo to Taisho periods. It offers a glimpse into rural life from years ago, featuring ancient towns, temples, palaces, and more. The village displays well-preserved structures including centuries-old cottages, a tea-ceremony house, and a 250-year-old kabuki stage. Visitors can also explore homestays and daily necessities from different eras.
The place is refreshing, calm and interesting to go for. Indeed to see how were people living in the old days, allow us to understand why the Japanese are so eager to preserve their culture and tradition.
Ps: the bridge on the water was scary but worth a try. No danger at all

Great outdoor museum that takes around 1-2 hours to complete. It's on the side of a mountain, so note they there is a bit of a hike up. They have old rural thatched roof buildings, and some more modern facilities. There are also a number of nice waterfalls. You get a 100 yen discount to the little cafe right out in front with admission too. I'd recommend visitors come check it out if they get the chance.

It is located on a hill, so it's quite exhausting to walk around. Parking spots were limited.

A must visit, excellent descriptions in English, an educational look at how locals from 1600 to pre-industrial Japan lived in villages. Alll of the buildings are transplants and very quiet with a modern art museum up hill with excellent stories of the artist’s works and life overseas. Only 1000 yen entry. It doesn’t have the demonstrations of other cultural centers but cheaper and a good walk amongst some fragrant forests and flowers. I could hear movement of snakes but didn’t see any. Many butterflies in the summer. Just wonderful.

Shikoku Mura is an extraordinary place for lovers of architecture and landscape design. It's an open air museum with traditional buildings set amongst beautifully curated landscapes. It also houses the modern Shikoku Mura gallery designed by Tadao Ando - a modern art display space with amazing views and water features.

The museum was a huge complex of different ancient wooden huts. These huts were located in a disperse area, which were quite difficult to locate with the map they provided. The paths were quite difficult to walk on as well, especially after rain. The car park was located at the entrance, which was quite convenient. All the huts came with lines of explanations, which were fun to read (mostly in Japanese though). There was also an art gallery, which was not 100% related to this whole complex of huts.

Onigashima Cave, located on the quaint island of Megijima in Takamatsu, is a must-see landmark steeped in Japanese folklore. This cave is adorned with vividly colored demon statues and hundreds of metal figurines, bringing to life the famous folk tale of Momotaro and his quest to slay the demons. The cave's passages can be challenging to navigate due to low ceilings, but its surprisingly level floor and manageable twists make for an enjoyable exploration.
It is must visit spot on island! You can choose to walk up, renting a bicycle to get to there or take a bus instead! For bus as i remember is 600 yen per ride!
The price of visiting the cave is 600yen! I think it is worthwhile to pay for! Since not many people come here, therefore only me in the cave that day!
The cave is full of myterious and a bit scary! Because it reminds me of a horror movie: travellers want to adventure in a cave, however there are human-like creatures living in that cave! They will kill and eat people there! BUT IT IS ONLY IN MOVIE! The cave i have visited in Takamastu is so safe!
And i think it is so magical, if you stay inside the cave, it is sooo cool inside just like an air conditioner turned on inside! It is really a stunning natural views in Japan!
If you want to do exercise in Japan, you can walk up to the cave! It takes you around 3-4hours for round trip! Remember to bring more water with you!

The value for money for the experience was not very high. The island itself is beautiful but you have to pay ferry ticket, then either bus (I recommend walking up if you can it’s cheaper and less then 30 min) or bicycle rent plus the entry to the cave itself is 800yen for adult so it’s quite pricey. The cave tour was very short, less then 5 minutes in and out and basically all you see is the sculpture. Just to compare we went the Ritsurin garden the day before it was 400 yen for adult for a world famous Japanese garden which we easily spent 2 hours exploring.

Difficult place to reach.
Some of the cave passages are very low and difficult to squeeze through, so be careful with wearing backpacks through.
The cave floor is surprisingly level in most places.
A few twists and turns, enough to make it fun but not so many that it is actually confusing.
Some bats flying in the cave; you can hear them congregating and chattering in some blocked off sections of the cave.
Very friendly staff. Hardly any visitors on the island so it felt like a private adventure.
Megijima is a small island in Kagawa Prefecture, known for its public beach, cherry blossoms, and mountaintop offering panoramic views. The island is also famous for its ogre caves from the Momotaro folklore. Accessible by a 20-minute boat ride from Takamatsu Port, Megijima offers unique attractions such as the ghost cave and renowned art installations like the 20th-century retrospective.
I visited here to see Setouchi Triennale 2022.
A very small island to see around. I had little bit difficulty to find dining.

This island houses a mountain that is rather high. YES RATHER HIGH. I warned you. Do NOT rent a bicycle; you ABSOLUTELY CANNOT ride it up to the top, you may be able to drag it up and then ride it on your way down, but the scenery is great so you might as well enjoy your walk if you are a tourist(and went through all the trouble to come here AND climb the mountain).
Alternatively you could get a motorcycle if you live in Takamatsu and come here from time to time for a picnic. But for that the island is a bit small.
This is the famous site of the Momotaro legend of Japan and on the top there is the cave of the Oni. Not exactly an attraction but might help you enjoy the island... in summer, especially. It's really cool in the cave(I think it's air conditioned).

After arriving by ferry, we took a bus for 800 yen round trip and went to Onigashima Cave. I wasn't impressed by the art works here, and I thought it was just a fantasy world, with an exhibition that combined the legend of Onigashima with a cave built by people over many years. The view from the observation deck nearby is spectacular, so I think it's a good idea to come for that purpose.
Other than that, sightseeing was complete after seeing the beautiful beach near the port and a few art works by the port.

Onigashima is a legendary place. A large cave on top of the mountain is a tourist facility.

Caves are not natural, but man-made. When I think about limestone caves, I get a shock (feeling like I've been fooled).
It's fine if you want to visit as a tourist, but...
Well, since it's on top of a mountain, it might be possible if you're just going to see the view.
It was an island like that, so unless there was an art festival exhibition on it, I wouldn't want to go there again. For me, the large cave became a complete negative. If you want to see island life, there are many other good islands...

Megijima is a small remote island belonging to Kagawa Prefecture. I visited this island, also known as Onigashima, without any plans, and it was more fun than I expected, so I'm posting it here.
When talking about Kagawa Prefecture, Shodoshima, which is famous for Angel Road, is famous, but Megijima is a much smaller island than Shodoshima, and you can circumnavigate the island in one hour by bicycle.
Megijima has a cave where demons are said to live. Rent a bicycle to the top of the mountain and explore the cave. After that, you can get to the top of the mountain and get a great view from the observation deck.
There are other buses that take you to the caves and observatory, but I recommend renting a bicycle. Since it is electric, you can easily climb up steep slopes, so you can drive without getting tired. Also, running downhill from the top is exhilarating and feels like riding an attraction.
Megijima is easily accessible from the city, so be sure to visit it when you visit Takamatsu!

The Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum, located in the Mure area of Takamatsu City, was once the studio of the renowned Japanese-American sculptor. The museum features outdoor displays of his carved stone artwork, showcasing his unique blend of Eastern and Western influences. Visitors can explore the museum's central and convenient location, just a short walk from various transportation hubs and other attractions in Takamatsu City.
We had a difficult time getting here and communicating with the staff, but it was well worth the effort. Big admirer of Noguchi and this is a wonderful site. Breathtaking sculptures both in the garden and in a large “shed”. Possible to peek inside his house as well (from the outside).
I don’t understand why we couldn’t take photos though!? It is neither cheap nor easy to reach to the museum. I think the museum should review this absurd photo ban. Today there are even cameras in eyeglasses, how should they protect such a ban?

The once in a life time experience for a Noguchi fan. I remembered falling in love with his sculptures in Noguchi New York. Here is like a Mecca to his work ethic.
In Japan, you can take a look at how he worked behind the scene. He also has part of his ashes in one of the huge sculpture on top of the hill in the museum and the rest are in Noguchi New York.
This is an only by reservation museum, so prior email reservation is a must. The tour guide lady speaks perfect English. Can take taxi from the nearby train station or a 15 minutes walk through the stones shops which was part of the whole experience for me. Don’t forget to visit the famous Udon shop nearby afterwards.

Ogijima is a small, mountainous island in the Seto Inland Sea, known for its charming village, picturesque lighthouse, and annual art festival. The island offers stunning views of the Great Seto Bridge and is famous for its beautiful sunsets over the sea. Along with Megijima, it is one of the historically significant islands near Takamatsu. Ogijima is also home to many stray cats that roam its streets.
If you're planning a trip to Ogijima just to see the cats, stop. A charity called Sakura Neko has been working to trap, neuter, and release the wild cats. When they've neutered the cats, they clip their ears. This means that there are much fewer wild cats on the island. During our 3 hours there, we saw less than 10 cats. Also, don't bring food for the animals. The TNR charity provides the remaining cats with some food and water. It's also frowned upon to bring them food. It's really nice to see a "cat island" that has made efforts to control the cat population.
However, if you're going to Ogijima for the art, you will not be disappointed. Most of the installations are within the same small area, making it easy to visit all of the art within a short visit. The instillations were all really wonderful. If you're visiting for the Setouchi Triennale, make sure to come here.
There were also many places to get food, which was a nice surprise after visiting Teshima and Naoshima.
Another piece of advice - line up early for the ferry back to Takamatsu. We arrived at around 2:30 for the ferry that departed at 3pm and there was already a long line at the port. We were only just able to find seats. The ferries are much smaller than those going to the bigger islands, so if you don't arrive early you may end up standing.
Phillis LeBlanc — Google review
I visited in Q4 2022. Ogijima 男木島 and its neighbor island, Megijima 女木島 (literally, "man and woman wood island") are a short ride from the city of Takamatsu 高松. The rule of thumb continues to hold -- cat islands close to major metropolises don't have many cats! The island is a popular weekend getaway for Takamatsu locals wanting a dose of island life and perhaps some nostalgia food. A few cat-themed cafes and stores are on the island, along with a cat photo exhibit hall. Perhaps more interesting are the random pieces of modern art dispersed across the island, part of an art collaboration among various islands held once every few years, the Seto Triennale. Cats are relatively few, I'd estimate no more than 30. The domestic news reports ~140 cats being neutered on Ogijima back in 2018. The remaining cats are very well fed and a few are overweight if not outright obese. Less of a "cat island" and more of a "cat publicity island"!
Frank Siu — Google review
Old decrepit island with very few residents. If you are coming for the cats come in the fall. In the summer they are all hiding from the heat. If you are coming for the art most exhibitions are permanently closed. Most cafe and restaurants are closed during the week as well.

The pier allowed both passengers and cars to travel to the outlying islands. The schedule was more for passenger only vessels. Separate lines were allocated for different types of cars in the area. Staff were directing the traffic, but they spoke Japanese only. Tickets were sold in the office inside a building. The fees for cars were quite expensive. Passengers inside the cars were required to go upstairs after parking the cars in the lower deck. The ferry was nicely decorated. Snacks, drinks, and noodles were available. Around 1590, Takamatsu Castle was completed, and it is said that it was continued by the 4th Ikoma clan and the 11th Matsudaira clan. An aquarium built on top of a mountain seems like a strange choice for aquatic life, but it seems this place was built a while ago, so it is a little dated. Is there an aquarium in Yashima? I went with the feeling of rank. It's certainly not a big aquarium like in the city, but I didn't expect to see dolphins. It was written that the dolphin show would start in the afternoon, so I decided to wait even though I still had time. I didn't expect it to be a show where the dolphins would be given food, but they did an amazing jump, and two dolphins jumped together. That alone made me glad that I came to Yashima. Before the show started, I saw dolphins through the glass, so when I showed them a stuffed cat, they seemed to be interested and the dolphins stared at me. A baby dolphin was also born and I was able to see it in another pool. The penguins are also friendly, so feeding the penguins seems fun. It is barrier-free so that you can move with a wheelchair, but you need to confirm the route from the parking lot. It seems that there is another route because it is difficult for wheelchairs to move on the general route. Wheelchair users should check the route in advance. I want to go see dolphins again.

We took a bus there from Takamatsu and, on the way, we stopped for udon at Udon Honjin Yamadaya (which I highly recommend). Then we caught the cable car up to the shrine. If you are a foreigner, be sure to bring your passport with you as the cost of the ticket is half price with it. Also, if you are a goshuin fan, they make a special goshuin book for the 88 temple pilgrimage that is very beautiful. It has a line drawing of each temple on the page opposite your goshuin stamp. We bought ours at a souvenir shop in Takamatsu before we went.

The famous "5 sword mountain" temple as named by Kukai, this is an adventure in itself. Prepare to ride a cable car to the top of the mountain and enjoy this splendid temple.

Catch the cable car and check out this beautiful mountain temple.
This temple is an absolute gem !! Among all of those I visited in Japan, it's one of my favourites. So many fun things to see and do ! There are statues according to your zodiac sign that you shall turn three times after putting a coin into a little box. And a gorgeous dragon and pond. An old couple I met randomly taught me how to do everything. So kind I was soooo touched ! I went there on the first of January 2024, I feel this year is going to be so blessed!! 誠にありがとうございましたー✨💕☺️

Historically important. Great to visit during the New Years holiday. Expect some crowds though, but sometimes that’s the best part.

One of my favorite shrines. It's so rich of so many different things, details, statues, hidden mini-shrines within the shrine, etc.

(Translated by Google) It's big, spacious, and various gods are enshrined there.
Anyway, dragons are amazing.
A valuable shrine that seems to be blessed with good luck with money.
Since it's the Year of the Dragon, I went to New Year's visit.
Many people visited the temple even during the daytime on weekdays.
It's close to the city and easy to get to.
A shrine where you can visit all the zodiac signs.

This may not be the right word to describe it, but this place feels like a god's theme park and you can have fun visiting it.

I visited Tamura Shrine, which I was interested in😀
It was about 3 hours from Osaka as it was a bit crowded as it was the middle of the day during the holidays🚗
It was in a more residential area than I expected!
There is a free parking lot next to the torii gate.
Probably about 30 units.
When I arrived, I had to wait a little while.
I was able to fix it in about 5 minutes.
What you see immediately after passing through the torii gate is
The big golden god of Sanuki Seven Lucky Gods is sitting 😀
Looks like it will benefit you♪
This shrine has a lot to see within its large grounds!
It's fun to look for the Buddha statue of your zodiac sign 😃
There was also a statue of a man whispering while stroking his head, and a statue in the shape of a male genitalia (lol)
There are many Seven Lucky Gods in the Usani-ni-Kaku precincts😊
As expected, the main feature here is a dragon holding a golden ball that looks like it's about to ascend to the heavens!
The presence is terrible😅
There are many small coins at your feet♪
I'm in the year of the dog, so I find a statue of my zodiac sign and spin it 3 times, but it's so hard💦
It didn't turn at all, but I turned it a solid 3 times because it seemed like it would bring good luck😊
Everyone, please try to find your own zodiac sign and spin it♪
It was a wonderful shrine worth visiting!
*There were many people who came to take photos and stream videos without touching the gods.
Is it because of the influence of SNS?

An old house turned into a café and an art workshop. Very friendly staff, awesome atmosphere. More than just a café, a small community really.
One of my favorite places in the world. I mean it.

Excellent atmosphere, very cute workshop (can I buy one for my grandma?), terrace is awesome to have a coffee. I just wish the coffee was up to the place ;)
