The Igreja e Convento de Sao Francisco is a remarkable 18th-century Catholic church and convent located in the historic center of Salvador, Brazil. It is recognized as one of the Seven Wonders of Portuguese Origin in the World due to its elaborate baroque architecture and ornate interior filled with intricate sculptures, tiles, and decorative details.
I found it the best Church in central Salvador. So much history and so much gold leaf on display. Also the intricate carvings are so life like. Outside you have the whole "good and bad" murals in old Portuguese blue tiles. From birth to death, they deliver a true education in daily life. This in a the time when books were a rarity. Here the rich or poor would gaze at the murals and learn what was right or wrong in life. Do spend some time seeing them. English and Portuguese titles. Simple loo provided. Do ask.

It is a baroque church, a masterpiece! The interior is breathtaking! Totally covered by with gold-colored wood, magnificent. While the cloister is completely covered with a cilco of white and blue mosaics that put in drawings of the judgments of Horace. Definitely worth the visit. The cost is 15 Brazilian Real, less than 3 dollars.

Igreja e convento de Sao Francisco De Asis is a highly recommended stop on your next visit to Pelourinho Salvador. It's stunning from the outside and lights up beautifully at night. The real beauty however is seen in the fine detailing and elaborate use of gold on the inside. The cost to enter is only R$5 / US$1( in March 2022 ), a price thats more than worth it. The pictures really don't do it justice. They don't provide tour guides so I would advise visiting as a part of a walking tour of pelourinho, to get details on the history. Definitely add it to your list of must do in salvador.

Something you probably should Not miss, but it shows as well how wealthy the church is and ironically tons of gold in a church dedicated to Franciscus.

this building is so so beautiful. The courtyard is covered in tiles that are donated by the portugese king in 1795 (according to my guide), and the inside is covered in gold. I cant even begin to describe it. There are so many statures and sculptures , its breaktaking. Theres also a cemetery of some sort where some ancient bones lay. I heard it also contains the living quarters for some reverened father. This place was really beautiful and its a must see if you ever are in Salvador

Gorgeous and interesting Church
We stumbled across this during our walk around Pelourinho and what a gem it is. There were flowers laid down the aisle of the chapel so I assume there was soon to be a wedding there and it looked truly stunning.
Walking around to can go into the Throne Room and Crypts followed by other rooms with information and artifacts. Just after the Crypts there was an outside area but we didn't venture out there as it seemed this was the reception area with the same flowers as the Chapel so likely for the wedding but it was gorgeous.
The Cathedral Basilica of Salvador is a 17th century Mannerist-style cathedral that was originally built as the church of the Jesuit Order of Salvador. It is now the seat of the Archbishop and features baroque altars and paintings, making it one of Brazil's richest examples of baroque architecture. The cathedral boasts impressive artwork and architecture with its rococo style, gold decorations, and perfectly preserved ancient organ that can be enjoyed by visitors in the afternoon.
Try and get a guide to take you through the Cathedral! We had a wonderful guide, Gilmar, he speaks Portuguese and French. The rich culture and historical background of the region is amazing and he can put the cathedral in the context of the local culture! Beautiful visit and worth the fee.

Highly recommend doing this with a local guide. You learn so much more about this church and the surrounding area.

Situated on the edge of the bluff in the historic center of Salvador, this cathedral is a marvelous example of Mannerist architecture. The interior boasts a spacious nave, elaborate baroque-style side altars, a sacristy, library, and ossuary, with marble-covered walls and towering pillars. The sacristy features a beautifully carved jacaranda archway, a painted dome, and floor. Highly recommend getting a local guide to delve into the rich culture and history of the region.

The first church in Bahia was completed on this site in 1585 by the Jesuits, but was destroyed during the Dutch invasion. Construction of the current church began in 1657. It’s façade is made of lioz sandstone, all of which was imported from Portugal.
The lateral chapels are decorated with wood-carved altars covered with gold leaf, in Renaissance and Baroque styles. This cathedral is historically and architecturally significant. It is open to the public for a minor fee (R$5, or less than $1 US), and if you are anywhere near here, I strongly suggest that you visit (you will not be disappointed).
The actual name of this church (in English) is Primatial Cathedral Basilica of the Transfiguration of the Lord.

One of the most ornate churches I have seen so far. A bit overwhelming. The convent has a courtyard with amazing tiles. Take your time to really look at them.
In the square in front of the church, you will find local females selling traditional Salvadorian "fast food". A must try.
And loads of coconuts - the national dring .. also for police officers on duty.
São Marcelo Fort is a circular fortress constructed on a reef during the 17th century, serving as both a sea fort and former prison. Its unique doughnut shape has earned it the nickname "belly button of the world" by Brazilian author Jorge Amado. Located near Terminal Maritimo in Bahia, this historical site showcases stunning architecture and serves as a reminder of Brazil's rich cultural past.
Safe place to anchor.

São Marcelo Fort, formally known as Forte de Nossa Senhora do Pópulo e São Marcelo is located in Salvador in Bahia, Brazil. It is located in small bit of land off the coast in the Baía de Todos os Santos. Standing on a small bank of reefs about 300 metres (980 ft) from the coast, it is one of two forts separated by water from land in Brazil, the other being the Fort Tamandaré da Laje Tamandaré in Rio de Janeiro. It is the only cylindrical fort in Brazil. Its design follows those of Castel Sant'Angelo in Italy and São Lourenço do Bugio Fort in Portugal. It is popularly known as the "Forte do Mar" (Fort of the Sea).
It was built to protect the important port city Salvador from threats; the city had the largest number of forts during the colonial period of Brazil
Pelourinho is a historic district in Salvador that features picturesque cobblestone streets, Afro-Bahian souvenir shops, and lively squares filled with musicians and dancers. This area contains colonial landmarks such as Igreja e Convento de São Francisco and Catedral Basílica de Salvador featuring intricate gold-plated carvings and Portuguese tiles. The Pelourinho is also home to the Casa do Carnaval which showcases multimedia exhibits of street parties with costumed mannequins.
The Casa do Rio Vermelho is an amazing museum in Salvador, Brazil that is dedicated to the life and work of Jorge Amado. An extraordinary experience for whoever has interest in Jorge Amado, a pilar in Brazilian literature. This was the house where he spent his last years with his dear partner in life, Zelia Gattai. They “adopted” the house in 1973 and had it beautifully re-engineered to meet their desire for a comfortable home but foremost a location to meet and greet the wide community of artists in Salvador. So that, for to a quarter century, this house was the epicenter of the Salvador community of intellectuals and artists.
As you enter the property, you are immediately taken by the charm of the abundant vegetation co-existing with the house itself and how one has mutually blended with the other. You will be visiting one room after the other, each filled with intriguing memories and illustrations of the period. The living room features Amado’s typewriter. This was the room feeding his inspiration. Cooled with the shade of the generous vegetation above the house, it also brought the carpal cropping of toads outside at night. You are then brought to the kitchen, the dressing room, and many others rooms, each filled with touching illustrations of this fruitful period that has marked the Brazilian cultural heritage.
An awesome experience which stands very high in list of locations of interest in Salvador!

Church of Our Lady of the Rosary of the Black People
This neoclassical-style church is an impressive sight with finely detailed windows and doors, as well as a neoclassical altar. It also has statues of Lady of the Rosary and other saints from the 18th century.
In the heart of the old city is this beautiful blue church. In the middle of the chaos, you can seek a quiet place to relax out of the sun and enjoy the ‘over the top’ catholic attempts to convince others of a god and also to get a better spot in heaven - it’s opulent! There is a small museum dedicated to slavery at the back of the church with a couple of interesting stories - especially about an African slave who was considered a hero for defying the Português

Such a beauty place to visit but very packed with tourists at times. There is police everywhere as part of a special effort to open Salvador up to the international tourism scene. A spetacular cultural experience
The ancient church of slaves in Salvador during the colonial period of Brazil. Here the masses are performed in a Catholic fashion but with a strong emphasis on music. Usually the traditional Catholic songs are played to African drums beat I came into the church when someone was being baptised and I could live a unique experience. Though I knew all the songs, the music was still full of incredibly energy. It was amazing to see old and young people all dancing and singing together to drums rhythm.

The Bahia Naútico Museum is a noteworthy museum in Forte de Santo Antonio da Barra that showcases exhibits and artifacts from Portugal's seafaring past, as well as exhibits about the slave trade. Visitors can enjoy stunning panoramic views of the surrounding area from the historic lighthouse on site. The museum offers information in both Portuguese and English, making it accessible to a wider audience.
Appealing old lighthouse and interesting maritime museum. No café although there was a sign pointing to it. Also no wifi. Excellent views all round but the long climb to the top is rewarded by long distance view obscured by netting. The museum has some good model ships and a lovely collection of ships in bottles.

The Basilica of the Lord of Bonfim is a large, gothic-style church located on a hill in the city of Salvador. The church is known for its Hall of Miracles and its body part replicas, which are popular tourist souvenirs. The church's fame derives from its power to effect miraculous cures, making it a popular shrine.
I really enjoyed busing this place. We did the 3 ties for 3 wishes. It was fun to explore this area a few vendors out front. Would say this Is a good place to visit, parking can be tough to find.

One of the best attraction of the city.
You'll feel a deep spiritual energy and You'll meet a beautiful cultural side of Salvador de Bahia.
Quaint old church, with a beautiful view, much nicer interior than one would guess from the exterior (although exterior is done in rather charming gothic architecture), and a cute story of wishes granted for each of the knots tied with a ribbon at its fence. Make sure not to tie more than three knots, though, and of course - you can't say the wishes out loud. :) When will they come true? When the last of the knots gets undone and the ribbon falls off the fence...
Vanja Cingel — Google review
Though it is not that close of the mainstream of Salvador's sightseeing, the basilic is indeed a must to see place. It has such a huge and potent energy that will make the extra effort worth it. It's not the most luxurious church one can visit, but the relevance of its history to the locals (and the history of religious development in the entire state) is more than necessary if you really want to leave with the mystical taste that Salvador leaves in all of us. There is no fee payment, and as a plus, you can visit the beaches located on the outskirts. Don't forget to attach your Senhor do Bonfim ribbon on the gates of the church - legends say you must choose the color you like the most and tie it in with three knots, one for each wish of yours. The color you pick will represent the orixá that protects you.

A must see during your visit to Salvador. A beautiful cathedral that captures the heart and soul of one of the oldest cities established in the new world.
It’s local custom to tie ribbons at the gate in front of the church and say a prayer to the Holy Savior of the Bay of all Saints.
Inside the cathedral and deep rooted in the Afro-Brazillian Candomblé traditions and the Catholic Ex-Voto, the afflicted offer wax casts in body parts to Saints as thanks or hope of healing them.
Farol da Barra, also known as Forte de Santo Antônio da Barra, is a popular tourist destination due to its picturesque landscape. Originally built in the 1690s, it offers visitors a glimpse into the evolution of navigation tools and ships. The area surrounding the fortress is well-maintained and provides a sense of security for beachgoers who can enjoy both rocky shores and sandy beaches. Additionally, there are various dining options available along the streets above.
Nice place, beautiful view for the bay and city. Posiible to drink something also there.

The place is kept very clean. The information presented is so interesting and the view from the lighthouse itself is spectacular. Moving on to the local beach was also a pleasure where there is a strong sense of security. The shores in this area are rocky, but if you are careful there is enough sandy beach for a comfortable splash in the sea. The streets above are nicely presented with a wide assortment of places to visit and eat at. I fully recommend the experience.

From all of the museums that I visited in Salvador, The Misericordia Museum was the most well-kept. It was by far the cleanest and most organized. Although, what really made the difference in the place was the museum guide, Licia. She was a loveable person and an excellent professional. Licia said that she used to be a cleaner of the museum in the past, but then she started to study until being able to become a museum educator. Beautiful stadium. The view to the field is amazing from every angle, regardless of whether you are at pitch level or very high up. Nice "happy hour" before the match, with live music and many food trucks. Only downside is the labyrinth path from parking lot to stadium - it doesn't make sense - but not enough to take away a star.

Went to watch Bahia vs Corthians. Good game, but the place was kind of a mess. Not less than I was expecting though, spilled drinks every once in a while, long waits during intermissions. Nothing out of place for a sports arena.
Seats were small but we hardly sat anyway. Everyone just moved towards the edge of the viewing area.
Prices were great, especially compared to the US. It's great that going to a game fits in most people's pockets here, and is a great way to spend a day.
I recommend going, even if only just once if you're not a sports fan like me.

Additionally, the museum showcases alternative art exhibitions in its Great "Casarao" building. Overall, the Palace of Arts offers visitors the opportunity to experience art in various forms while appreciating both historical and contemporary architecture.
Very cool space indeed. Great to see Bahia cultivating this kind of high quality cultural and artistic space. Clean, so much to experience and family friendly.. It would be great to see this type of space deeper in the favelas also.

The Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Praia Catholic Church is a grandiose 17th-century structure that boasts lavish baroque design and an impressively crafted ceiling painting which creates a visual illusion. The opulence of the architecture is truly remarkable, showcasing intricate details and elaborate ornamentations throughout the building. This church stands as an impressive example of religious artistry and craftsmanship from the Baroque period, offering visitors a glimpse into the historical significance of Catholicism in Brazil.
An old historical igreja. And very big. In historical City center Salvador Bahia. Must visit.
Espaço Caixa Cultural Salvador is a commendable location that houses various cultural events such as exhibitions, workshops, and theatrical performances. The center is situated in a historic establishment; however, the localisation of the place seems to be unappealing. Despite this setback, it is still worth visiting especially for those who love art.
That's a good place. But the localisation is terrible. Worthy!
Vila Rosa is a beautifully restored 1930s fazenda that offers visitors a glimpse into the golden age of the cacao boom. The cocoa plantation's rich history and impeccably preserved architecture provide an immersive experience, allowing guests to step back in time and appreciate the charm of this bygone era.
The Elevador Lacerda in Salvador, Brazil is a historic art deco elevator that offers stunning panoramic views. It connects the upper and lower parts of the city, providing a convenient transportation option for visitors. This iconic landmark has been restored to its original beauty and attracts tourists from around the world. The elevator consists of four separate elevators and can transport passengers 72 meters in less than 30 seconds.
Beautiful elevator with stunning views of the city. At just 15 cents, it is a very affordable way to get to the old city. The observation deck at the top gives you some of the best views in Salavador. It's also closely located to Mercado Modelo, which is convenient. With that said, make sure you don't have any flashy jewlery on you when you go up so you can stay safe.

A tourist attraction with a lot of history.
⭐ The elevator is very fast and takes you to the upper city in a few seconds
⭐ We did not pay an entrance fee and did not have to wait in a queue
⭐ Nothing else to say or to do. Very straightforward. It is an elevator after all. But fun nonetheless!
Also, prices for souvenirs in the upper city are cheaper than at Mercado Modelo!
B. Jisoon n — Google review
It's very cheap at only R$0.15, and conveniently located. It facilitates a 10 minute walk from the ferry to Pelourinho or from Pelourinho to the market. There may be a bit of a line depending on the time of day that you visit. Can also get a bit hot during the day. There are stunning views from the top, a very popular photo op spot, as well as a famous ice cream shop help you beat the heat. Can't miss it on a visit to Salvador and I definitely recommend taking it at least once.

A very traditional landmark of the city, this elevator is known as the first public elevator on the entire Amreica. It connects the up and down part of the town (where the Modelo Market is located). The fee to use is very unexpensive - only BRL 0.15 cents. It's also a good place to enjoy the breathtaking view of the All Saints Bay. Unfortunately, the surroundings are not as safe as expected, but note that this is very common for historical cities in Brazil. I do recommend you to be accompanied by a local to avoid unsafe areas and to avoid the local vendors who can be very insisting. As always, enjoy it during the daytime. The elevator doesn't offer a panoramic view (it was not built with this intention), but it has a glass corridor that can be the place for nice pictures.
Felipe Bezerra Lopes — Google review

It's a small pastry and ice cream shop situated right next to the elevator. I have to admit that the ice creams are delicious, generously served, and really cheap. You may choose to get them in a cone or a cup. The 'Pave' flavor is amazing! Pave is a Brazilian cake-like dessert.
Arkadiusz Jędrzejewski — Google review
The history behind the construction is interesting, however it’s not a great place to go. Going up and down costs R$0,15 per visitor and the elevator is too crowded, hot as hell and smells sweat. Great view up there though.

The Mercado Modelo is a popular market in Salvador, Bahia, known for its wide range of shops selling various arts, crafts, and souvenirs. Alongside the shopping experience, the market also offers an array of restaurants where one can indulge in traditional Bahian cuisine.
Great place to shop great prices, beautiful clothes, shirts, dresses really colorful swimware and many local produced liquor and food items. A marketplace which has 2 floors full of Vendors who sell various things.
⭐ You can find a lot of interesting souvenirs. Definitely for tourists.
⭐ The variety of souvenirs is very grand. You will definitely be able to find something you like— if you're not overwhelmed by the choices.
⭐ Nice vendors and easy to navigate. At the top floor there is an ATM if you need cash.
⭐ If you're hungry, there are spots to eat and drink as well.
Most of the stalls only take Pix or cash! So you will need to get some from the ATM. Items here are a bit more pricey. I would recommend going to the upper city to shop for more souvenirs if you only have a card on you! But it is worth a visit.

This is indeed one of the greatest and most know trademarks for anyone visiting Salvador for the first time. Currently, the market is passing by a renovation so its split in two different sections. But both have basically the same kind of products available. At first, I've thought this would be similar to São Paulo's Municipal Market; however, here you will find just two or three options of restaurants with most of the other places taken by souvenirs stores. It can be a great place if you're looking for this type of store but be attentive of the prices - you can similar items for huge price variance. Tip: things here are cheaper than most of the stores of Pelourinho. Extra tip: though the market itself may not be what you're expecting take the opportunity to visit the marine located a few steps of it. The view is stunning and a good place for nice photos.

The Porto da Barra Beach is a long, wide beach with calm waters perfect for swimming and sunbathing. It's only a short walk from the Farol da Barra lighthouse, making it an easy destination for visitors to Salvador. With over 600 yards of sand, it's large enough to accommodate even the largest crowds, but also has plenty of secluded spots where you can relax alone.

(Translated by Google) Terrible attendance. Just a good "job generator" for some (so many employees that it's confusing), but in terms of production, efficiency, quality, pro activity, agility, empathy,... it leaves a lot to be desired.

(Translated by Google) We regret service! Empty place and delay in the first service (reception). At the reception, two attendants are just chatting, on their cell phones and talking to other employees, not to mention their "close face" and their unwillingness to clarify any demands (doubts). When you are looking to schedule appointments and exams, you never find a vacancy or even the system does not leave you on hold.

Pessaimo atendimento! Local vazio e demora no primeiro atendimento (receoção).

(Translated by Google) I like being politely attended to by this City Hall, because since I entered with Mr. Washington from security, I don't know if I remember everyone's names: Lais, Nilza, Adriana, Taciana, Gilmara, Jandira from support and others, because the mind is weak; good energy to everyone.

(Translated by Google) It is not possible to understand the logic of the City Hall-Bairro Centro / Brotas being located in the Historic Center area. Is it to make it more difficult to register demands? There isn't even a WhatsApp number for us to send photos or videos regarding the demands. Most requests can only be made in person and for those, like me, who are physically disabled with reduced mobility and have limited mobility, it is impractical to travel to the current address.
From the list of all the neighborhoods that are covered by this City Hall-Neighborhood, Brotas has the largest number of inhabitants (more than 70,000) and km² (5.04), but incredibly the headquarters is not located in the largest neighborhood but in the Center which has only 15,000 inhabitants and occupies only 0.85 km². What's the logic?

Qual a lógica?
