Centro Astronomico Alfa Aldea is a small yet appealing hostel located in an area renowned for its night sky. It's ideal for camping with small tents, and there's enough space to accommodate two motorhomes. The owner, Marco, is well-versed and enthusiastic about the sky, often giving speeches on what's being observed. While it may not always have clear skies or stargazing opportunities due to weather conditions, the hospitality provided by Marco makes the trip worthwhile.
We stayed here for 3 nights with a car and rooftop tent. Very relaxing atmosphere, friendly people, big kitchen, nice swimming pool and good coffee. Camping was not expensive. Stargazing tour was very interesting. Recommend to stay here!

The details of our booking were completely messed up. Due to the very long reply times from Alfa Aldea we found ourelves without a place to stay in Vicuña with just a day to find something else, with basically everything else being full already. Would not recommend

Where to begin.. Alfa Aldea is magical. I arrived here in a camper van planning to stay two nights and ended up staying for over a week. Marco and his family have created a wonderful venue for astronomy tours and star gazing (Juan is highly knowledgeable with all things astronomy as he is studying astronomy in La Serena), camping/lodging, coffee shop, pool, adventuring… the list goes on. Vicuña is a great town for exploring the rest of Valle de Elqui. I look forward to spending more time at Alfa Aldea in the future. This is must do when in Valle de Elqui.

Nice and homie experience, we went there for a '18 de Septiembre' long weekend EXCLUSIVELY for the world-acclamed night sky of the area, what a perfect place to stay at a small astronomic center/hostel right? well...Cloudy with a chance of sunrays. all weekend. Yes, a drag. But what made the entire trip worth it was the hospitality of Marco (owner) and his enthisiasm for the sky. He took out his solar lenses and gave us a really cool speech of what we were watching.

We had a brilliant stay here in January - the accommodation is in a beautiful setting in the middle of a quiet vineyard with incredible views. The on site pool, Astro observatory and hammocks mean there’s something for everybody and the rooms are lovely with en suites with decent showers, plenty of space with tvs and kettles too if needed.
Breakfast was great with fresh fruit, bread and cheese platter. We also had eggs made on request for no extra cost.
The staff were really welcoming, clearly cared about guests and interested in people. I think that you would be happy and have fun staying there whether a couple, a family or a group travelling. Really relaxed vibes.
Astro tour was also brilliant, added wine and soup when it got cold was a bonus! Sebastian was really knowledgeable and managed the group really well with plenty of time observing. Came away feeling we had learnt and seen new things in a really inclusive environment - translating from Spanish to English as well which was really appreciated.

Great experience!!! The Alfa Aldea team really tries to make you have a good time with wine and hot soup while you listen the guide. The groups are small so it is better when looking at the telescope or listen the explanations. The guide was really knowledgeable. They could separate the groups into spanish and english speakers since in my group some people could not enjoy the whole experience because they were lost in translation.

Unless the moon is out or the planets are aligned or there is some other significant event occurring between 9 and 10 pm, I'd give this tour a miss. You're better off gazing at the beautiful night sky yourself. The tour was very comfortable (enjoyable 3d clip, glass of wine, blankets, soup) but the presentation was unclear and the telescope image of the various star formations is really for astronomers.

Be careful you eyes could be pointed by a laser.
I was having a good experience with the tours and the accommodation. HOWEVER the guide pointed me with the laser in my eye. He only said sorry but did not give any support or further information. Now I have some pain. I am visiting the doctor in a few days in Santiago. The laser was quite strong and it had the warning about avoiding eyes contact.
People who works there should be more professional dealing this kind of issue starting by not poiting their customers in the eyes. These kind of "accidents" should never happen.
Pisquera AbA Oficial is a distillery in Vicuna that produces top-quality pisco, which is highly regarded in Chile. Their free English-speaking tour offers an informative and engaging experience without being too long. The guides are knowledgeable and friendly, happy to answer any questions visitors may have about the distillation process or the product itself. Aba pisco is one of the best piscos available in Chile, and it can now be purchased in the UK as well.
Great little distillery with kind servers. No tour available in English unfortunately, but our server did his best and offered 6 free tasters which was great! They should sell cocktails as well!

Lovely guys there! Good Piscos, good explanations, good times. What more?
Yannik G. — Google review
We walked for an hour to get to this distillery after a recommendation from our hostel in Vicuna but when we arrived, the staff did everything in their power not to acknowledge us. Even when we literally stood in front of them, they averted their eyes and pretended we weren’t there. When someone did eventually acknowledge us and we asked about a distillery tour, they simply said ‘no English tours’ and walked off. All in all, the experience made us feel really uncomfortable and unwelcome - there are many other distilleries (especially in the Pisco Elqui area) which are not only far less rude, but genuinely make you feel as if they are passionate to share the art of pisco with you.
Giving a couple of stars because there is a nice bar at the front of the distillery serving innovative Pisco cocktails.

Distillery Museum guide was friendly and knowleageble. While she spoke mainly Spanish and we communicated in English, Google Translate enabled us to understand each other. We learned about the pisco-making process. We were also offered the various pisco types to taste. Worthwhile free tour.

The Puclaro Dam is a picturesque reservoir surrounded by rugged slopes, offering visitors a stunning landscape and the opportunity to enjoy windsurfing and kiteboarding on its strong daily winds. Despite being affected by dry seasons which have limited the amount of water in the dam, it remains a beautiful place worth visiting. Observatorio del Pangue - Deep Sky South is an astronomical observatory located in Chile that specializes in observing the southern sky. The facility has state-of-the-art equipment and technology, including a 1-meter telescope with adaptive optics, which allows for high-resolution imaging of celestial objects. The observatory operates year-round and offers researchers and astronomers access to a dark sky site with minimal light pollution.
Yesterday we had our first experience observing stars in this place. First we would like to say thank you to Eric and Christian. Guys are highly professional. They told us a lot amazing things with enthusiasm and answered all our questions. By the way Cristian helped us to take wonderful pictures of the moon. We had our tour in English. There is a free transfer that takes you from Vicuña and get back. Second just notice that you need to buy the tickets from 10:30 to 12:30 the day you have a tour. So we recommend you go to exactly this observatory and you won’t regret🫶
Евгений Звягинцев — Google review
amazing. was trying to decide between the different observatories - this feels like the one. booked through a form online a couple days before with my request - you go to the office to pay in person the day of the tour. 2 lovely guides spent a solid 2.5 hours under the stars with a small group of 7 of us after a driver took us up to the observatory. french, english, and spanish. absolutely worth the 32k pesos.
Ben Schorsch — Google review
After having cloudy weather on one day, we delayed our trip and stayed in Vicuña one extra day to come to this observatory, which we told the man running the tour. Later that day he told us he was sick but someone else would be running the tour. When we arrived at 8pm, he informed us that no one was available, and we were VERY disappointed as he had given us no time to make other bookings. We were also not sure if he cancelled due to no other people booking the tour, so whether it was worth their time to just have us.
Whilst we understand people get sick, clients should be told as soon as possible, particularly as he knew we were staying an extra night for the sole reason of seeing the observatory.
I acknowledge that my review is very different to others, so I hope management will take this as a learning point as we were very, very frustrated, particularly as we were provided with no other options.
In response to owner below:
I still stand by my above review, as even an hour earlier notice would have helped us sort out a different tour, therefore you did not contact us as soon as possible, as my review said. You had our email and accommodation details, yet you did not contact us, so you the time we knew (8pm), all the observatories had already started their tours.
Unfortunately for us, this was a once in a lifetime opportunity and we will not be returning to Chile, which is why we stayed an extra night and why we were very disappointed.

This is one of the best experiences to learn new things that I had in my life. We visited Vicuna for our honeymoon to learn more about the chilean culture and to see one of the last places in the universe to see the stars without light pollution. And what can I say: if you can do a tour: do it with the observatory del Pangue!!! Eric - actually a French scientist - is just fantastic, super smart and really has huge passion about astronomy. The observatory they build up there is great and his way to explain the universe was fantastic. I can just highly recommend to visit this place!!!

Absolutely brilliant experience! We were picked up promptly from the pick up location and drove about 40 mins to the observatory which was a lovely drive in itself. The observation deck is stunning, and we could see so many stars and the milky way with ghe naked eye already due to lack of light pollution in the mountains. We were put into groups of no more than 6 and had fantastic explanations from the guides who were also very happy to answer our endless questions! The views through the telescopes were breathtaking - we saw Jupiter and 4 of its moons, several nebulae, galaxies and stars to a very good resolution. It was really a magical experience - highly recommend :)

We saw the Milky Way with our naked eyes. The sky is so clear here. We also saw Jupiter & its moons, plus Saturn rings and several nebuli in the telescopes. So beautiful! The guide spoke excellent English and gave great explanations of constellations. Make sure to wear warm clothing because it gets cold in the mountain at night.

They sure have a weird system for ticketing, in that you make your reservation online and THEN you show up at a specific time the evening of your reservation to stand in line to buy tickets and transport, then wait another 30 minutes before being transported. The facilities were alright, but we were in a group with 20 other people so there's a lot of standing around waiting for your turn to look through the telescopes. Guides are passionate and made it interesting. Overall it was nice enough, but not sure it's a must-visit.

The rigamarole to actually get your tickets is a complete fiasco - read on for details. However, everyone we dealt with both at the office and the Observatory were very friendly and helpful so the system is NOT their fault.
Posted hours online are a work of fiction but from reviews we gathered that they'd be open a little before the tours begin so we turned up just before the 6pm tour as we wanted to get our tickets for the 8:30 tour.
Yes, you're reading this correctly. You don't actually get a ticket when you book online so you have to go to the office to do so, along with all the other people who booked so you get to stand in a nice long line to actually pay.
Yes, you're reading this correctly. You cannot pay online. Sigh.
Oh, and don't bother trying to get your 8:30 tickets around 6pm.
You're reading this correctly. You have to queue up around 8pm with all the other people, etc.
The bus to the actual Observatory costs an additional 7,000 clp, an absolute ripoff.
Google maps works fine if you have your own transport, with one caveat: it says you are there about 50 yards short of the actual entrance gate. Show your ticket for entry to the parking lot.
OK, so you've gone thru all the steps to get your ticket, and you've driven there, arriving at 8:30 on time for your tour. On the night we went, the tour didn't start until 9:20 but who knows on your night.
Finally the tour: our guide was fantastic and the information he gave very interesting. Looking at the moon and stars was amazing.

This place is incredible. Our guide was so knowledgeable and funny! He was passionate and his passion was contagious! What an amazing experience.
Barbara Olivares-Lazcano — Google review
Horrible system.
This place requires you to reserve tickets in advance, yet you have to go half an hour before your observatory tour starts to pick up your tickets, so far so good?
Nope, when you arrive there will be a queue of people and most of them won't have a reservation and the people who work there will take them anyways (in fear of being treated as mean for not taking customers with no reservation) which causes the people with a reservation to wait for around 40 minutes, when they could just sell you the tickets when you make the reservation...or have two queues...or sell them online...unlimited options!
We even had an older woman cutting the line twice, taking a very long time and when we had enough and told her to have some respect for other people's time she said "learn to live life...you are young" I guess if you know how to live, skip lines, and have no respect for others maybe go there and you will have a great experience for me it was not.
Also the observatory was cheap but you get what you paid for, very crowded and tired tour guides, we where lucky to join an English tour with a great guide but most experiences are not like that.

We really enjoyed the tour. Got to see Saturn’s rings, Jupiter’s moons and many constellations. The guide was very knowledgable and spoke very good English. We also listened to a few presentations which were mind-blowing. It cost CLP 20,000 for two of us including transfer to and from Vicuna. If you then need travel onwards by bus be aware that the tour gets you back between 21:00-21:30 and many of the last buses are at 21:30. We very nearly missed our last bus but asked the transfer to stop near the bus station for us and we just made the bus as it was exiting the station. You have to go to the ticket office that’s near the Torre Bauer in the afternoon to sign up for the tour later that evening. You then return to the office at 18:00 to confirm and pay, weather dependent. At around 18:30 you get the transfer and the tour starts just after 19:00 and finishes around 21:00.

Inside it preserves an authentic hall of the Municipal Council from 1826, currently the tourist information office operates on site.
