Kitan Strait is a narrow waterway that connects two bays located within a national park. This channel lies amidst an area of natural beauty, with numerous forested islands and towering peaks surrounding it. The strait's serpentine path through the landscape adds to the picturesque appeal of this location. Kitan Strait provides a vital conduit for shipping traffic while also offering breathtaking views for those passing through it.

Kimiidera Temple is a historic Buddhist temple in Japan known for its serene natural surroundings, crystal clear spring waters, and breathtaking views of Wakayama Bay. It boasts of an impressive eleven-faced Kannon Bodhisattva statue and a challenging ascent of 231 steps to the top, offering visitors ample opportunities for introspection and contemplation. The temple also features an elevator available from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm for those who prefer a less strenuous climb.
opt for the cable car, 400 yen/way.

Beautiful temple in a beautiful setting. Dramatic climb to the top of the stairs. (There is also an elevator available 8:00 am~5:00 pm.)
Martin Holman — Google review
Probably the most popular and the largest of the Wakanoura region shrines. Several eclectic shrines located up a significant number of stairs. Free if you take the stairs, payment required if you take the cable car. Worth a bit of time wandering around. Skip the spring, which seems to just be a covered well that attracts a lot of hungry mosquitoes.

A powerful and quiet place. It’s comfortable to talk a walk here.
Jo aisen — Google review
It’s a nice temple with a lot of stairs or a very steep hill to drive up. It’s also not worth taking the cable car as it’s only a few metres long so better to walk, better for those who struggle with the heat or have a disability. Great view of Wakayama from the top of the temple, historic but not the best I’ve been to.
Simon Looskin — Google review
I've given this lovely temple only 3 stars because...there were a lot.....of stairs.....to climb..... Nonetheless, it was a wonderful experience and as other guides have said, the view from the top is amazing. A must-see if you're in Wakayama.

One of the oldest temples in Japan with a massive eleven-faced Kannon Bodhisattva statue. It also had 231 steps to get to the top. Talk about an opportunity to contemplate about life.

Kimiidera is a lovely, striking red temple in Wakayama. Founded in 770, it sits upon a hillside with great views of the city. It is supposedly quite gorgeous in the spring, as it is voted one of the "top 100" best sakura blossom viewing spots in Japan. Though, even in the fall it does have quite a bit of charm.

Buddhist temple with a large statue of kannon (goddess of mercy). The temple is on a hill and you can see the city from above.

Pretty quiet place, mostly locals and not much tourist.
The hilltop fortress in Wakayama has been restored and converted into a park. The area provides a stunning panoramic view of the surroundings, showcases cherry blossoms, and exhibits samurai weaponry. Despite visiting on a weekend in October, only two other groups were present at the castle grounds. After climbing up the stairs from the parking lot, there are two ideal locations to capture photos of the castle - one just before its entrance and another within an enclosed stone structure across from it.
There was only two other groups when we visited the castle grounds. Seems very empty during a weekend in October.
After ascending the stairs to the castle grounds from the parking lot, you can get nice shots of the castle in two locations in my opinion. The first, just prior to the entrance into the castle, and the other is located on the other side of the ark, within a stone enclosure.
The old lady manning the ice cream and souvenir shop was very sweet to us. She offered to take pictures of our group and also handed out sweets to the little ones.

Very nice castle in Wakayama city. The gardens are very nice during cherry blossom season. It is a nice place to go and have a picnic with your family and friends. There are many events held in the castle grounds throughout the year. There is a small school in the grounds which is good for small children. The inside of the castle is small and there is not so much to see. The summer festivals are usually very good.

Any bus from stop one at Wakayama station will bring you to the Castle. The Castle itself is very scenic with many areas to take beautiful pictures. The brochure actually points out several places to get the best shots. The inside of the castle keep is underwhelming but the 360 degree view you get at the top is great.

The architecture from outside is amazing, you have very beautiful gardens and nice way up to the main entrance. The inside with exhibitions of the samurai armor’s, weapons and other interesting things.
Not easy for people with wheelchair. A lot of stairs to climb.
Great castle with cities view from the above.

Frankly huge castle area, including nice outside park and even zoo area. The stone rampart stairs now have wheelchair access, nicely kept 3-story White Castle, not like the 5-story with secret floor Matsuyama black castle for example. Inside various samurai gear, weapons, flags, the long spears, the fish dragon shakuhachi roof ornaments, screens and much more. Could easily spend more time reading, studying it all, and they have QR code recordings. Go Wakayama, nice!

Absolutely gorgeous in spring! Lovely atmosphere. I just enjoyed the castle gardens, but next time I hope to enter. The matsuri decorations were so cute. I love that the castle map has photo spots marked. You can get a great shot no matter what, but the points on the map were particularly beautiful. The Sakura are starting to visibly shed, but that means the ground was pink! I really enjoyed and recommend you visit in spring or autumn.

Spring is here! The sakura tree blooms around 80%. There are people on picnic mats doing hanami (flower watching). Lots of food stalls and a very relaxing athmosphere to sit under the cherry blossoms. I believe April 3 2024 onwards would be the best viewing dates but starting today April 1, 2024 you could definitely enjoy hanamin here.

Went here in the morning for a quick stroll. The place is very wide. Pets are also allowed to enter around the premises. You may need to pay for the entrance fee if you want to enter the castle itself. People with wheelchair may have a hard time going up to the castle. There are plenty restrooms around the area. There is also a small shop where you can buy souvenirs and quick snacks. This is a must place to visit if you are going to visit Wakayama.

The Momijidani Teien Garden, situated close to Wakayama Castle, is a tranquil Edo-period garden that boasts of a pond and maple trees which transform into quintessential shades of red during autumn. The garden presents an idyllic setting for visitors seeking natural beauty and tranquility. Though relatively small in size, it's free to visit and offers stunning views thanks to the reflecting light on the pond with morning sun rays shining through the canopy of trees.
Beautiful small Japanese gardens, located within the Wakayama Castle grounds. Several winding and elevated paths. The immaculate trees and greenery contrasting against the thousand year old stone. Nice little tea house located within as well.

You must buy a ticket from the ticket office before lining up your car to get on the ferry. The ticket office is far away from where you enter the boat. Arrive early to find the ticket office and get your ticket. Please carry your car registration paperwork to the ticket office, because they need to know the dimensions of your car (it's on the shakensho document). Pay for your ticket and you will be told which lane to use (1,2,3,4, or 5 for large trucks only). After getting the ticket, drive your car to the assigned lane and wait for the ferry to arrive.

Yosui-en Garden is a serene and private garden located in Wakayama pref. It features a seawater pond and picturesque mountain views, with meticulously landscaped pine trees and hydrangea blooms adding to its beauty. The garden is relatively small but exudes tranquility amidst lush greenery. Visitors are required to pay an entrance fee, but the stunning sunset vistas make it an ideal spot for photography enthusiasts seeking breathtaking shots of this Edo-era gem.
At the beginning of 19th century, Harutomi
Tokugawa, the feudal lord of Wakayama, ordered to build this garden as his villa.
Yo-sui-en means the garden to enjoy evergreen trees.
It is good walking under the shade of pine trees around the pond which takes the larger part of east of the garden. As this pond takes its ocean water from Oura-Bay which surround the garden, it will be fun watching fish which often jump out from the pond. The legend says that this pond was build imitating Xi-Hu lake in China.
Yo-sui-tei house which was build in the center of the garden in 1821, where the lord used to take a rest. There are lord's room (Go-za-no-ma), a kitchen (Go-zen-dokoro), a tea ceremony room (Cha-shitu "Jissai-an"), and so on.

garden among which numbers of rulers (feudal lords) competed to build in each domain during Edo era (middle abe).

Kada beach ⛱️ is beautiful beach of Wakayama. Around 10minutes from Kada station. If you in summer time, will be so crowded. On September is good. For kids this is the best beach. For take a shower 300yen per 1 person. For BBQ 600yen per 1 person. Nice place to visit.

I was the only person at the beach so it was both peaceful and a little weird. So if you need peace and quiet then it’s good to go there during the week.

This is a great place to go fishing. A lot of locals fish here. A lot of hawks or eagles fly around over you which is a great experience. The beach itself is not so big but it is a nice place to go in the summer. It is about a 15 minute walk from the trai station There is not much around the beach for example there aren't ay shops, supermarkets or convenient stores The main carpark is 1,000 uen or there is privately owned owns for 500 yen. There is clamping a available on the beach. Kada town is also very nice to walk around with the doll shrine a must see place.

I went to Kada Beach this early summer, is so quite in there. The beach was clean with with sand, the water also clear. But this beach isn't large beach as I expected. Near the beach there's baseball field and fishing spot. You can enjoying both during your summer holiday. Also there's harbor for fishing ship if you want to go to fishing.

Came here because of Amashima shrine.
It was fun because I came here by a fish-liked train. And the most interesting part is that pink one and blue one are a married couple (yes, they have a marriage certificate in cars🤣).

When I was there, there was no 1 around and just you and the sea. No shops around though.
The Museum of Modern Art, Wakayama is a contemporary and spacious building that showcases a limited collection of Japanese and global artwork. In contrast to the National Art Centre in Tokyo, this museum focuses on modern pieces rather than antiques. The first-floor cafe provides excellent service and food while the second floor also has a cafe. The building's exceptional architecture reminds visitors of traditional Japanese castles and temples. Additionally, it houses a small gift shop along with coin lockers for convenience.
They have coin lockers that return tour 100 yen when you get your stuff back. Cafe on the second floor as well. Gift shop was a bit small but whatevs

Local modern art museum, featuring two galleries, one permanent exhibition and one rotating. Featuring mostly Japanese artists, with some global pieces too. Some interesting works. Hashimoto Tomonari currently exhibiting (July to September 2023).

Nice museum to visit in Wakayama. Also has a cute cafe inside serving drinks and lunch.

A modern, clean and spacious building. A limited collection of Japanese art. The National Art Centre in Tokyo contains a larger range of antique and modern Japanese art. The service and food in the Café on the first floor is excellent.

Great initiative. It's too nice.
You can enjoy the exhibition at your leisure.
A capsule room from the dismantled Nakagin Capsule Tower building was displayed at the museum entrance, and I was wondering, ``Why? Here?'' I was told that the current museum was designed by Kisho Kurokawa.
I see. I don't know.
From the large glass windows of the cafe on the second floor, you can enjoy the greenery of Wakayama Castle and its park as if it were a borrowed landscape. You can also enjoy some relaxing time here. The people at the cafe also talked to me about the exhibits, which made me feel enriched.
There is a parking lot underground at the facility. If you use the building, you will get 2 hours free, and if you use the cafe, you will get an additional 2 hours free ticket. Very kind.
It was very good.
It's a place I would like to visit again.

The Kishu Toshogu Shrine is a traditional Shinto place of worship situated in a picturesque location with views of the bay. Access to the shrine involves ascending a steep set of 108 steps. Upon reaching the top, visitors can enjoy free Wi-Fi and access multi-language guides by scanning QR codes. Although there is an admission fee to enter the temple, simply climbing the stairs and taking in the view over Wakaura is a worthwhile experience.
The steps are 108 deep slope upward. Good exercise. Stunning view from the top of the hill: the shrine.
We are stopped by the shrine police: he says no photo for the shrine. Although few took them I did not.
He told us:
Engravings by Jingoro Hidari on the front door depicting hunting hawks and pheasant (symbolize the samurai (hawks) hunting for the pheasant.)
Engravings of dragons and tigers on the front four poles. And how the carps become dragon: means success for you (鯉躍龍門 or 登龍門)
Shrine hall decorated with carvings of animals such as cranes and murals by Kano Tanyu
Crane and turtle are symbolized with long life.
Shrine police had many stories. You should consult with him.

Pleasant elevated shrine complex, located nearby Wakaura Tenman-gu Shrine, and not as impressive. Entry fee of ¥300 for less wow. Still worth a visit though.

Awashima Shrine is a Shinto temple dedicated to fertility and childbirth, located near the seaside in Wakayama, Osaka. The shrine boasts an extensive collection of lacquered dolls and lucky cats that add to its unique charm. Free toilets are available on-site, while parking can be accessed for free up to 30 minutes upon showing the parking ticket at the front office or paid at a rate of 550 yen per hour.
Bit spooky but cute shrine. There’s a tree trunk you crawl through to make your wish come true. They hold ceremonies to appease the souls of dolls. Maybe Chucky and Annabelle should be brought here😅

So many dolls and all the famous ones you see throughout Japan like Maneki Neko and Daruma all feature here in their various forms. It’s a long walk from the station but worth it.

At the start of the Pacific Cycling Road, this shrine is an interesting experience. Surprises around every corner, it’s intriguing and a little spooky. If you are in the area it’s definitely worth spending time there. I went at 8am and there was nobody there.

very cute shrine in Kada, features figurines and puppets of all kinds
Dirk Hebecker — Google review
I have no idea why some people call it a creepy place. It is just a unique shrine that collects dolls and other items from people and arranges them in spectacular fashion. The dolls are consigned to the sea every year on March 3, the day of doll festival in Japan.
The place has been in the news(urban legend) also for some unverified claims that the hair of some the dolls keeps growing and that the dolls can curse people etc. but I take it with a pinch of salt.
The shrine is very small and took me just 30 minutes to see everything.(also, the free parking is only for 30 minutes!)
A lot more interesting than the usual Japanese shrines which are more or less the same.

A place where both families and couples can enjoy a tuna butchering show. If you are driving, it may be difficult to find the parking lot. There are two locations, but if you're just shopping, it might be better to stop at the one closer to the market. Get 1 hour free with any purchase.

We came right at opening and around 1100 in the hopes to see one of their famous tuna cutting times. There was quite a small crowd gathering at the entrance before opening. The main shows man seemed to be teaching a pupil cutting techniques and which cuts to make (which he proudly displayed to my lens, thanks 👍)
An hour later around noon, I returned after a visit to the amusement park across from the tuna marketplace and they started the show. Quite a larger crowd had congregated around the stand now (but probably not as bad as prior to COVID).
He spoke about the different types of knives he uses (all in Japanese) and about the tuna acquired I think, then proceeds to swiftly remove parts of the tuna and hold them up for the crowd to see. A much more enjoyable experience in person in my opinion!

Famous and popular fish market for tourists as they have Tuna Cutting show at 12 noon daily and you can also buy some fresh sashimi and sushi for lunch. There has outdoor sitting for eating.

A tourist spot only for tourist but not for seafood-lover!
>3000 yen for a sashimi bowl!
If we have to make a trip there by public transport for an hour or more, my family would definitely been blaming myself 🙃
Besides, super expensive parking @750yen per hour, better park in the opposite parking lot.
Not sure would anyone love it, but it’s not my cup of tea 🙄

Wonderful place you will love it. Their is a tuna cutting show inside but has a timing of the day. Inside the market there is so many fresh fishs and foods that is ready to eat. And also beautiful sea view and arcade games and UFO catcher. Also alot people came here for surfing and sea activities. Is super windy so remember to bring your windbreaker or coat. Their many resort and hotel that u can stay around there. Sure is beautiful at night.

Well I can't say it's a market with the best price, but the location and atmosphere is good.
It's really empty these days because of the covid19 pandemic.

There are several different stalls selling fresh and frozen fish, as well as pickled vegetables, marinaded squid and frozen crab. At the back, there are shopsmthat you can order sushi or charashi don, as well as udon with tempura.
Seating is available at the back, or in the room towards the mini supermarket.
The fish was fresh, though I would not say they were the very best I have had. Good for the price point, I guess. There is also an area where you can grill items, near the ice cream and drinks store outside.
Looks are located at each end.

"Kuroshio Market" is a market rich in fresh seafood and local specialties. Its appeal is that you can enjoy fresh sashimi, sushi, and seafood bowls at reasonable prices. In particular, the seafood purchased directly from local fishermen is exquisite and the dishes are full of flavor.
In addition to food, the market also sells traditional crafts and souvenirs, making it a fun place for tourists. You can enjoy shopping while feeling the local atmosphere and culture.
However, it can get crowded on weekends and during the tourist season, so we recommend choosing a time to visit. Overall, Kuroshio Market is a worthwhile spot as a place to enjoy local food and culture.

Not a traditional market but a market made for tourists. One half selling seafood - fresh, dried, pickled. Other section made up of food stalls. One was a BBQ stall, where you pick up different raw food, pay and move over to a live BBQ section to cook the food at your table.
However I didn't find the food super fresh nor overall cooked food very tasty. Maybe was just my choices.

Came here in December, slow season, not a lot going on. Some shops were not open, the ones that were open had limited offerings. Actually, winter sashimi is the sweetest. The sushi was good, but it took a long bus ride to get here. Driving would be better. They do have an area where you can seat and eat the various food purchased in the market.

Plenty of fish & seafood products to buy + open market cooked-food stalls. Note: Maguro carving is *only at 12:30* (not 11:00 or 15:00 as is stated on multiple web-sites)

Fresh local seafood market. Particularly, the market claimed their fame for skilful and freshness of fine cuts portion of bluefin tuna. However, we arrived on the weekday (Friday) and they don’t appear to be very busy and managed to get the table easy. There are plenty of charcoal grill table to serve big crowds. The selection of fresh seafood to choose from in the market displayed. Some of the sources such as scallops, oysters, Madai or red snapper, uni, lobster, prawns, sea snails, etc.

Free admission to the shopping complex next to Porto Europa. As the name suggests, they sell a lot of local specialties and souvenirs, mainly seafood. If you time it right, you can also watch a tuna dissection show. There is also a barbecue corner outside the building, and you can purchase barbecue ingredients at the market. There is a parking lot at the back where you can get 1 hour free parking if you purchase over 1000 yen at Kuroshio Market.
Please note that the parking lot on the Porto Europe side does not have this service.

In addition to getting ready to eat locally produced foods and snacks, here you get to select fresh food (seafood, meats, veggies etc) for a DIY bbq without any additional charge. All the cutlery and utensils are provided too, and the staff will come light up the fire for you.
There is also a drinks stall with all kinds of drinks, alcoholic, fresh juices, coffee/tea, soft drinks.
Most interesting is the daily tuna cutting show. It's quite an informative session but conducted only in Japanese. Nonetheless still a worthwhile experience seeing a live tuna carving. The tuna sold here are all fresh, caught (farmed ones) on the day itself and sold as sashimi.
Elgin Seah — Google review
As with most of the other posts here, yes it is a touristy place.
Parking 🅿️ is expensive 🫰, and it's not as if there are loads of spots to choose from. Food options in the hall look fanciful, but also come with a steep price tag. But I guess this also depends on your budget and comfort level.
Tuna cutting starts at noon, which means that bus 🚌 loads of tourists start streaming in around 11. Once again, if you enjoy the vibes of milling with various people, then this is a Great Place to Soak Up The Vibes. But if you're averse to too many people, then this seafood 🦞 market could be Overwhelming and Overpriced.

It was alright!
To my surprise, it doesn't have that fishy smell and was pleasant to walk around.
Do catch the marugo cutting performance. However, it's more for the action as its spoken in Japanese and if you don't understand the language, then will be tough.

it was a cool place to walk around and see. def catered towards tourists but that is what i am so it works out. they had lots of fresh seafood options. i opted for the tuna bowl with 3 cuts of tuna (fatty, medium fatty, and lean) it was 3,500¥ a bit pricey but it was pretty yummy. the tuna tasted really fresh and the fatty tuna literally melts in ur mouth. they have a tuna cutting show at 12:30pm. i would recommend waiting at the stage a bit early (like 12pm or earlier) if you really want to see it because it gets PACKED. i got to the stage around 12:15 and i couldnt really see :/ its a cool experience though. theres porto europe next to the the fish market but ngl it was underwhelming. maybe its more exciting in the summer but in march it was pretty dead.

Make sure to get here early to see the tuna cutting show at 12:30 on weekdays. Then grab a tray and load up on seafood to grill it yourself in their outdoor barbeque area overlooking the water. Some shops sell local Wakayama only goods as well. Loads of bus tourists gather which makes it a bit crowded at times. The 121 bus took us there from the castle.
