Iriomote-jima is a picturesque island covered by lush jungle and mangrove swamps, boasting stunning beaches and abundant water activities. The island features a national park and was recently designated as Japan's newest world heritage site in July 2021. Visitors can witness the unique yama-neko, but should be cautious when driving, keeping speeds below 40km/h.
I didn't expect that much for this island. It turns out, I really like it! Very beautiful and unique. Japan's newest world heritage in July 2021. Worth visiting! I wish I could see the yama-neko. You must rent a car here! Don't over speed more than40km/h because of yama-neko. Be careful!!

Lots of choices in terms of water activities or exploring the forest on the Island. However, it is not easy to get around without a car but most car rental shops closed early in the afternoon. Difficult to get decent accommodations at reasonable price during summer season. Suitable for energetic travellers who want to do lots of exploration and sports. But probably not for those who just want a relaxed vocation.

Very unwelcoming island if you didn’t book an expensive full option trip with an agency... nobody speaks English and makes effort for that, few shops, few activities, few people, dirty beaches... Car rental is a true inferno and the bus system is very bad.
I put 1 star because I cannot put a zero for this awful experience. This island is not made for people who like to plan their trip from day to day.
Consider all the other yaeyama islands as a better option as no effort is made for tourism here.

Taketomi Island is a picturesque destination with tranquil beaches and a delightful village adorned with red-tiled roof buildings. Visitors can enjoy snorkeling among vibrant tropical fish or embark on a hike to Mount Omoto for breathtaking views. The area also offers opportunities to explore Okinawan culture and traditions, from ancient human remains at the Yaeyama Museum to learning Okinawan dance moves at Yaema Village.

Taketomi Island is an archipelago that has traditional Okinawan life, the houses here have distinctive characteristics including being fenced with dead coral reefs piled up to form a fence around the house, the surrounding island is decorated with beautiful white sand and amazing coral reefs, the beaches are pristine , visitors can also watch the sunset from this island. Visitors can come to this island by boat/ferry from Ishigaki Island, which is not too far away, around 7 km. To get around the island, visitors can rent bicycles at the bicycle rental places that have been provided. Visitors can also ride a ratchet train using buffalo power around the village.

Upon arrival, a car comes down to the impressive village with red tiled wooden houses, coral stone walls, and white coral sandy white roads all over. The scenery is representative of Taketomi Island. Which has been identified as a conservation group of traditional ancient buildings. National key The island also has services Ride the cart, use the buffalo to drag. Around the village one more round or let the buffalo donkey go into the water

“A jewel in the crown-Taketomi Island”
If you go to Ishigaki or Kohamajima make sure you visit Taketomi Island, it is a little jewel, take a water buffalo tour, this doesn't last for very long but it's comical and informative, after that hire a cycle and just explore, one tip though make sure you have plenty of water if visiting during summer. I absolutely loved my short visit to Taketomi and cannot wait to return.
Pinaisara Falls is a beautiful and sizable waterfall located in the lush jungle of Okinawa, Japan. While reaching it may not be easy, the stunning natural surroundings and refreshing pool at its base make the journey well worth it. The highest falls in Okinawa offer visitors two options - hike to the top in 50 minutes or trek to the base of the falls in an easy 20 minutes for swimming.
Fabulous experience! Kayaked through mangroves then a short hike to the base of the falls, and later a longer (45 min) hike to the top of the falls for lunch and the most spectacular sweeping views.
Booked with Naoya Ojima of Iriomote Osanpo Kibun, who speaks great English and is the absolute best guide. Calm, caring, safe, helpful, informative, good sense of humor-totally recommended!

Amazing trip! We booked a 1 day tour from Ishigaki to the waterfall with Hirata Tourism (they have a counter at the Ishigaki ferry terminal) We were the only ones on the river. The canoe ride to the base of the waterfall takes about 40 minutes. The hike through the jungle to the top takes about 30 minutes if you are fit. Breathtaking view from the top. We had lunch at the top of the waterfall. Very nice English speaking tour guide who gave us information about the different animals we saw. I highly recommend a visit to Iriomote if you are staying in Ishigaki.

If planning to hike without a guide please read. Supposedly, you cannot hike this trail alone. So you either need to be with a guide or with another person. The 1 star is not for the falls, but rather because I do not know how to rate it, as I had to turn around. More below
I showed up to the trail head and was going to hike it via all trails. The signs say try not to go alone, but nothing says you cannot do it by yourself. However, when on the trail a guide stopped me and I was told it's a unesco site so you need a guide. When I said the signs say you just need to check in if you are alone, I was then told you have to be with someone else and cannot do it alone. So I respected their land as a foreigner, and turned around. Another guide told me something similar at the trailhead.
I couldn't find the info online about this, so maybe I missed it. But I wanted to post it so others don't make the same mistake. You supposedly cannot do any hikes on Iriomote without a guide or some else.

The highest falls in Okinawa are well worth a visit. You can hike to the top in 50 minutes at an easy pace. The trek is narrow and steep in places but can be achieved by even none hikers. Alternatively you can hike to the base of the falls in an easy 20 minutes and swim there.
Judy OBrien — Google review
Getting up here isn't a cakewalk, but it is well worth it. For Japan, its oddly and uncharacteristically not safety obsessed, so just keep your wits about you. All that said, there's a remarkable diversity of nature to be enjoyed in the surrounding forest, and the waterfall is worthy of praise. Swimming in the pool at the base of the waterfall is refreshing, pure enjoyment. All in all, a life reaffirming experience.
Kevin B — Google review
Awesome waterfall that's worth a quick tour. Pinaisara means "old man beard" in Japanese, apparently. It's named as such because, from a distance, the falls look like the beard of an old man.
I recommend hiking to the bottom of the falls to swim first before making the 20 minute hike to the top of the falls to take in the view.
Nishihama Beach is a popular tourist destination on an island, known for its calm turquoise waters and coral reef. While the beauty of the water may be awe-inspiring, visitors should bring beach shoes as walking into the sea can be painful due to the coral. Snorkeling is an option, but if that's not your thing you can still enjoy bobbing around and watching some fish come close to shore. There aren't many facilities available so it's best to bring your own snacks.
My favorite beach in all of the Ishigaki Island's. The sand was impeccable, the coral was vibrant, and there was barely anyone there! They had a nice bed and breakfast nearby but unfortunately we didn't know about it until our last day. We saw lots of sea turtles and cool fish while snorkeling. This is a must stop when visiting Ishigaki!
Elias Chelala — Google review
Magnifique beach with rosy sand, gentle water, and not crowded. In the morning waves were stronger and the waters cooler, while after three the waters get calm and even more enjoyable.
A bit above the beach at the entrance one can get the parasols so to stay on the beach the whole day to enjoy it.
Galiia Dautova — Google review
It was sad to see that the coral reef here has basically been decimated by the effects of climate change. It's a great beach for snorkeling because in the morning between 9:30am and 1pm you have a very good chance of seeing sea turtles very close to the shore. Lots of fish if you go further out to the edge of the reef. But the coral reef is 95% dead and it's very sad. Humans need to take better care of the planet. If the coral reef was still alive I would have given this 5 stars, as there truly isn't more you could ask for in terms of conducive conditions for snorkeling: beautiful white sand, calm clear, shallow water, fish and coral close to shore. It's definitely still worth coming to for the sea turtles alone if you're in Ishigaki

The Haimurubushi Beach is an exceptional hotel with a tranquil ambiance and a distinct island feel. It creates a sense of time slowing down, offering a relaxing atmosphere to its visitors. The beach itself is stunning, but it should be noted that swimming may not always be suitable due to shallow depths at certain times. This is because there are designated areas for water activities such as jet skiing and banana boats, which are clearly mentioned on their website.
First of all, the hotel itself is superb - just the relaxing atmosphere and it’s got the “island vibe”. Almost feel like the time slows down while we’re here. The beach is super shallow at certain time to the point it does not suit for swimming at all. Restricted areas for swimming as they also have activities like Jet ski, banana boat etc etc (the time for swimming as well as these activity details are all noted on their website too!). Just soooooo beautiful experience. Oh NOT FORGET TO MENTION… The night sky (star gazing) here is AMAZING…. I would just sleep here if possible, so many shooting stars too…❤️

Not a must go, but if you have time @ taketomi and you have enough beach, you could check it out. Ride the bike (electrical powered 👍😁) and it is near to the cow carriage center.

Cute little viewpoint if you're in the village. Sadly the top set of stairs was closed when we went in April 2023.

Not recommended, not a very high position to view the island and it has entrance fee.
Raphael Tso — Google review
One of the highest places on the island. You can get a view over the rooftops of most of the island. It's not real high, but not much else is either. There are a couple of decent restaurants in the vicinity, and it's not far from other tourist attractions (NOTHING is very far from anything else - it's a small island). Mind your step going up and down - there aren't handrails and the steps are uneven. No handicap access.
Stan Hutchings — Google review
Good views of the surrounding area. Unfortunately the small tower is closed off so you can't climb it to see the views. Worth a quick stop when in town to see the view from the elevated area around the tower.
Ida Beach is a stunning, secluded beach located at the farthest point in Iriomote. The only way to access it is by boat, which adds to its charm and exclusivity. The beach boasts crystal-clear shallow waters that are perfect for snorkeling and soft white sand that beckons visitors to relax and soak up the sun. While there is no infrastructure at the beach, nature provides everything one needs for a peaceful getaway.
A beautiful, pristine beach. Please note there’s no trash cans on the island, so prepare to bring your trash back with you 🙏 For the sake of Iriomote’s animals and fish, please don’t litter 😊
Like another reviewer said, most sunscreens kill coral (and therefore the fish that rely on the coral), but zinc oxide based (without nanoparticles) mineral sunscreens seem to be fine.
The walk to the beach is a wonderful, easy 5-10 minute walk through the jungle. You can easily imagine the yamaneko hunting nearby 😊 If walking close to dawn or dusk, please be cautious of wild boars, especially in the field at the edge of town, where I saw them twice. They can be dangerous.
Please relax and enjoy the beach 😊

Amazing beach! No people, no trash, crystal clear water!! We saw turtles there at low tide too :)
Joe Boardman — Google review
It's worth a visit to this beach. When I went it was quiet and peaceful with about 7 people on the beach in total. There are five ferries a day from Shirahama Port (at the end of road 215 on Iriomote, the only main road!).
The current timetable is attached but you can check the times by plotting the route on Google maps (we found that easier than trying to find a schedule in English online). We drove to the ferry port but there were buses as well. Once you arrive at Funauki port it's a short walk to the beach which is signposted.
The beach was beautiful, even on a slightly cloudy day like we had. The snorkelling was pretty good too - it stays quite shallow a long way out and we found the best snorkelling was a little further from the beach. We never went out of depth though. A lot of dead coral but we found a lot of living corals too and lots of fish.
Jo Waterson — Google review
Very nice quiet beach! You have to walk 15-20 min in the forest from the ferry, but it’s worth it if you like hidden beaches!

What a nice surprise to find this beautiful beach at the farthest point we went to in Iriomote. No infrastructure, just nature. Nice white sand beach and pristine clam sea. I only wished I could have spent longer here as we had to leave due to the boat schedule. Looking forward to visit Ida Beach in the summer.

Please go and enjoy the panoramic view. You can see the old scenery of Okinawa (Ishigaki). If you want to experience this for yourself, go to Umibozu, a coffee shop near the remote island terminal on Ishigaki Main Island. On the large photo panel on the wall of the shop, there are photos from around 1955 to 1955. I happened to walk into the store and was convinced, "Oh, I see!" The photo is almost the same as this scene. The excitement will be double. You can see that it is not a tourist-made landscape, but is really just as it is. The scenery of the city of Ishigaki Island feels old, but it is changing after all. It's common sense, but...
What is different from Nagomi Tower is that the stairs are wide and safe. Nagomi Tower was steeper and narrower, and I remember being scared even though it was only that high. Well, it doesn't need to be reproduced though.

Umineko Dive Shop is highly recommended due to the exceptional dedication, energy, and time they provide during snorkeling tours. The owner is friendly, vibrant, humorous, and fluent in English. Can't recommend this place enough. You get twice dedication, energy and time in water (snorkeling in my case) than with any other tour operator on the islands. The owner - very friendly, energetic, with a good sense of humor and good English - knows everything about the marine life and brings you to the places where you can see turtles and all kinds of fishes. The masks that he gave us fit like a glove and didn't let any water in, the fins were very comfy. You can take a shower after the tour.

And you can enjoy air-conditioning in the movie room, really a short hide away the summer sun!

The most famous beach in Iriomote because of the star-shaped sand you can find here. The coral forms a barrier from the open sea and the shallow waters in front of the beach become a perfect pool. Wikipedia found that Xitang is the name of a person. He was a local celebrity from Taketomi Island. He made great contributions to building the stone gate of Enbiwu Taketomi in Shuri Castle. Later generations commemorated him. Therefore, this Mitake was established as the patron saint of Taketomi Island.
But why not call the shrine Miyake, irresponsible to check the description recorded in Wikipedia:
Mitake is a place where gods exist in Ryukyu mythology. It may be a place to receive visiting gods, or it may be a place to worship ancestor gods. It is the center of regional worship, and it is still worshiped by some people as a sanctuary protecting the region. Because in Ryukyu Shinto, people who serve the gods can only be women, so in the era of the Ryukyu Kingdom, Miyue completely prohibited men from entering. But now most Miyue has allowed men to enter and visit.
However, it is said that the locals think Mitake is a sacred place here, unlike a shrine, ordinary people are not allowed to enter... so it is the domain of God?!

Nishitō was involved in the design of Shuri Castle and later ruled the Yaeyama Islands. Nishitō Utaki was built on the site of his mansion and is one of Okinawa Prefecture's designated cultural properties. There is also the charter of Taketomi Island in front of Nishitō Utaki, so if you look at it, you can see the historical background of Taketomi Island.
■Taketomi Charter
1. Do not sell land to people outside the island.
2. Do not pollute nature.
3. Do not disturb the order on the island.
4. Do not hand over historical culture and buildings to people outside the island.
5. Make use of local industries and folk performing arts.

(Translated by Google) I went on a tour!
It is said that the god of fire and the god of agriculture were enshrined on the site of a former government office, so there are lots of beautiful flowers, an old private inn filled with history, a magnificent Akayama Hill that is used for gatherings and children's play areas, and a tour of the village. There were plenty of sights to see, such as the oxcarts and various types of Shisa statues here and there!
The atmosphere of the village was very nice, so if I had time, I would have liked to see the cafe and the other side of the torii gate.
I think I'll come with the free plan next time!

(Translated by Google) Taketomi Island's scenic spot "Xitang Mt.", because Taketomi Island is not big, so I stopped by to visit some historical sites.
After searching on Wikipedia, I learned that Nishitō is the name of a local celebrity who was born in Taketomi Island. He was instrumental in building the Enbiyabu Ontake stone gate in Shuri Castle. Later generations commemorated him, so they built this ontake as the patron saint of Taketomi Island.
But why not call the shrine Ontake? I would be irresponsible to check the explanation recorded in Wikipedia:
Ontake is the place where gods exist in Ryukyu mythology. It may be a place to receive visiting gods, or it may be a place to worship ancestor gods. It is the center of regional worship and is still worshiped by some people as a sacred place that protects the region. Because in Ryukyu Shinto, only women can serve the gods, so during the Ryukyu Kingdom era, men were completely prohibited from entering Ontake. But now most of the mtake have allowed men to visit.
However, it is said that the locals believe that Ontake is a sacred place here. Unlike the shrine, ordinary people are not allowed to enter...

It is a sacred place of prayer and a restricted area from the torii gate. He is a very quiet god of the island's creation and agriculture. In autumn, traditional performing arts are dedicated to the gods.

For us mainlanders, torii gates lower the barrier to accessing Utaki, but Okinawa's Utaki and Japan's Shintoism are actually two different things.
As others have written, this torii gate was dedicated by a person named Kunishima during the war to commemorate his departure to war. ) is preserved as is.
