Rebun Island is a picturesque destination, boasting of verdant hills and rare alpine blooms that flourish during the summer season. Located amidst the sea, it offers breathtaking views of capes and shores. There are also convenient amenities available such as a nearby convenience store, washrooms and common areas, as well as coin laundry facilities at the camping site. To fully experience its beauty, travelling on foot is recommended with Momoiwasou being a popular place to stay.
Now all I can do is to include an extract from my travel diary. It was winter, lots of snow, freezing cold but we boarded a boat ferry at Wakkanai and then the diary says - Today we were away on the boat ferry to an Islands called Rishiri and Rebun. It was incredibly cold and a great way to spend the morning. Rishiri is an almost perfect volcano rising from the sea. We were lucky to get a good view of the mountain, snow covered and clouds and sun that lasted for about 30 minutes and then the snow, ice, rain and whatever set in. We got to Rebun Island and I literally raced to a store, bought two keys rings, raced back and we were on the boat again.- and then it was back to Wakkanai. I would do this trip again and again.

Easily a must visit place for sea urchin and kelp lovers. The island is absolutely peaceful, quiet, and beautiful with gorgeous flowers in the summer. Instead of renting a car, try getting an electric powered bicycle or Vespa to ride around the island.
If you need to feel like you’re in some GHIBLI or fantasy world, this is the place :)

Rebun island is really pretty with a lot of scenic beauty, capes, sea shores, and flowers.
We camped near the sea, the views were ethereal, there was a convenience store in walking distance, washrooms and common area and coin laundry at the site.

We've been here in late september 2017. We got to the ferry termial early morning and took a taxi from the termial to Kafukai, where we started trekking towards Funadomari along the western side of the island (most people go the opposite way). The views on the island are absolutely amazing. The skies and sea were blue and everything around us was colored with beautiful green.
From Kafukai start walkig westwards. Once you leave the forest you will see great mountains and hills surrounding you. Continue walking until you reach a fishing village called Uennai. From there continue walking north along the Sea of Japan for about 15-20 minutes (watch out for the very sharp rocks on the shore) untill you reach a small river mouth. There you will need to climb a very steep and a bit dangerous slope. Once you reach the top there is only blue skies, lots of greenery and amazing views until you get to the northern shore of the island.
I beleive the trek was around 15-18 km and it took us around six hours, includig stops to watch the view. From Funadomari we took the bus to the ferry termial and back to Wakkanai.
You need to be a bit in shape for this one, but absolutely recommended.

Momoiwa Observatory is a scenic lookout point situated by the sea, offering panoramic views of the cliffs and coastline. Accessible via a mountain trail, this spot offers breathtaking vistas that are sure to amaze visitors. It is recommended to take a bus to the parking spot and walk from there towards Shiretoko for an unforgettable experience. The southern part of Rebun is particularly worth visiting if you only have one day in the area.
Absolutely stunning hike!! Very leisurely stroll to the observatory from the ferry station. We walked all the way to the lighthouse and watched the sunset. Almost no one around in late august. Most just go to the observatory and turn back.

This is now one of my favorite hikes in japan. The endless wildflowers and views of cliffs and mt. Rishiri provide you endless amounts of pictures. Make sure you plan to spend lots of time here rather than rushing up and then leaving. Also, watch out for the large your groups. They sometimes walk in the street as opposed to the hiking path where they should be. This could be very unsafe if you are driving a personal vehicle.

Great viewing!! It was much better than I expected.
The mountain trail is tough, I tried to turn back many times. (I came from Kafuka, and return back here. Bacause less time until sunset.)
The viewing were magnificent.
I was impressed. I will be coming back again.

This observatory is the start to a stunning trek along huge cliffs looking down towards the sea and a remote side of Rebun island.
Rtexal Tan — Google review
A fairly easy path, which offers splendid views over the cliffs and Rishirifuji. From the port of Kafuka you can take the bus with destination "Momoiwa trailhead", then in a couple of hours walk the trail to the small village of Shiretoko, from which another bus will return to Kafuka.
Unfortunately in Rebun buses pass rarely, and this is one of the few things you can do if you take a day trip to the island without your vehicle. If you want to rent a scooter or a car, it is best to book in advance otherwise you risk finding nothing.

Cape Sukoton is the northernmost point of Rebun Island and offers breathtaking views from its observation deck. A gift shop nearby provides a warm respite from the cold, windy climate that pervades even in July. The Cape Tour Course starts here and leads southwards, though some parts may be rough terrain. Despite its extreme weather conditions, this spot remains a popular destination for tourists seeking to experience the end of the world feeling it gives off.
The northernmost tip of Rebun Island. Feels like the end of the world. And it is very cold even in July because of the wind. Bring warm clothes!
It's nice to visit but it's even better for starting a hike southwards. We hiked the Cape Tour Course (see photo) to Cape Sukai and then to the bus stop in Nakahama(?). Some of the course was tarmac but some of the bits were quite rough terrain.
I would say the hike is very nice but the southern part of Rebun is maybe even more essential.

This is definitely a school with a view. What an amazing location which I am pretty sure it won't get tiring to go to school on Rebun Island. It now functions as a museum and was popularized by a drama series that used the location for filming (many of the setting for the drama remains within the school compound). There's a LED cut out display of a teacher which looks really freaky as you hear someone speaking and at the last room you sed this moving display of the teacher 🥲

This was a fantastic short trek that is reminiscent of trekking in Santorini in Greece due to the curve of the cape in both Gorota Cape direction and view to Sukoton Cape. It is rather steep climb towards the walk up to the cape but nothing a 5 year old can't do.

The sign says 600m, but the experience is twice as long! The path was all uphill, narrow, stepped, and muddy in some places. At the very least, you need sneakers. There is also the fear that if you slip and fall, you might end up in the ocean below the cliff.
When you reach the top, you will find an open area and a signboard for Cape Gorota. The 360-degree view was spectacular, and the weather was nice, so the blue of the sea was amazing.
According to a person who came from the trekking course on the opposite side, it was quite long and difficult. We return to the parking lot we came from. The way back is downhill, so it's easy, but it's quite steep so don't let your guard down. It took an hour round trip, but I'm glad I went. It depends on the weather, but there are some wonderful views that are unique to the island.

I happened to meet Mr. Nita, who happened to have business at the shrine. In the past, Funadomari Village was divided into six wards from 1 to 6, and because it is in the 1st ward, it is called the 1st ward shrine. Steep stone steps, red torii gate. The red torii gate was made by a ship carpenter using FRP (fiber reinforced plastic). It is said to be cheap and long-lasting. As you climb the stone steps, you will see the remains of a dohyo ring on the right, secured by a log. It is said that in the old days, children would play sumo wrestling matches. Mr. Nita showed us the red-roofed shrine building in the back and the interior.

A really out of the way and far flung location, take the local bus from the ferry terminal. The ten minute bus ride takes you to the terminus stop just outside of the village. A really beautiful location with rock formations surround you.

Great view of an imposing lone standing sharp rock. This is 4 star because you have to thread past potentially treacherous grounds (falling rocks is a possibility on the steep rock face) and it's a single photo and nothing much else to see or do.

We took a local bus (bound for Motochi) from the ferry terminal to the Momodai Nekodai Observation Deck, and from there we walked about 2km through the fishing village. It would be a short walk if you took the bus to the Motochi bus stop, but since I wanted to see Momoiwa and there weren't many buses, I decided to walk.
Unfortunately, there is currently a danger of falling rocks, so you can only get close to 200 to 300 meters in front of Jizo Rock, but you can still see the strangely shaped rock.
I had planned to take the local bus home, but when I walked, I ended up arriving at the ferry terminal before the local bus arrived. Shin-Momoiwa Tunnel is 1489 meters long, but there is a sidewalk and there was little traffic, so it was much easier to walk.

There is a promenade that starts near the Lake Kusane campsite in the Funadomari area, and you can walk along the lake. It's quite large, so it's best to save your time and stamina when walking around.
The surrounding area is full of nature. I feel relieved that there are no bears, which I have noticed many times. If you were on the mainland, it would be kind of scary to walk along the lakeside in the evening. While mainland Hokkaido is currently plagued with bear damage, I felt that Rebun Island is a completely different world in that this is not the case on this island.
A lot of waterfowl come here during the season, so you might be wondering what kind of birds come here.
