Daihonzan Eiheiji is a Zen Buddhist temple that dates back to the 13th century and boasts an understated yet impressive complex comprising a monastery and ancient trees. Reviews of the site indicate that it manages to be both active with monk's activities and tranquil, inspiring awe in visitors. Despite only being able to spend a short hour there, many have noted that they would have happily stayed for longer due to the sheer size of the complex.
One of my favourite temples to visit. It’s a large complex with many buildings full of beautiful wooden carvings and well preserved artwork. Monks and guests actively live and practice here, so sometimes you can get an intimate peek into their daily life and practice.

Very peaceful place, very large and set in a beautiful setting. You will have to remove shoes but will get sleepers to walk around. The self guided "tour" is well arranged so that you see all the different buildings and get to go inside. English signs describe each building function.
You do see the monks going on their daily rituals.
All in all, close to 2 hours at a slow pace.
Most parking in the high street is around 300 yen for the day.

Other reviewers have said all of what I'll say already but it really is something else. At once busy with the monk's activities but still tranquil and awe-inspiring. The large, complex structure could have kept me much longer than the short hour I had there. The staff is kind and helpful, while the signs and guidebook are informative for grasping at least the basics of what the different halls and figures mean. I have never been to such an active temple before, but I suppose it's only natural for a founding temple of a popular sect. Highly recommend.

Very peaceful and spiritual place. I loved the way the monks take care about inner space and outside gardens, this is real ZEN. Thank you! I would like to come here once more.

on a saturday in Feb, visiting this temple in Fukui by car. it was a cold day, but not snowing. some snow were left around. paying fee of about 500 yen for an adult, taking off my shoes to slippers, and walking around in the temple. it took about 1 hour for us to go back. it cant be helped but i wanted to walk around with my slippers due to the footache... at last i made it around.
many rooms here to worship or pray. it was a nice stay to see and know about about 1000 years old Buddhist temple.

One of the must visit place in Japan. You should once try Zazen at Eiheiji Temple. They have 3 times per day Zazen for outside people. The temple Monk will provide and show to you how to to do Zazen for beginners. You never forget your first Zazen experience

It's a very nice temple. For parking, it's better to get closer to the temple for private parking, more or less the same price but much closer.

Absolutely beautiful temple. Very congruent with the natural surroundings. Many different views, angles, and combinations of trees, hills and the architecture to take in.

Many, many steps, so be prepared. There are some Buddhist prayer services that happen and visitors may be allowed to watch and listen. The whole setting takes you back 1000 years. It's a very serene and calming environment.

Glorious temple complex, embedded in the forest. Sprawling buildings across and up the hill. Wonderfully maintained old wooden structures, with newer walkways to help preserve the original ones. Mossy rocks and century old trees adding to the bewilderment.

One of the five Zen Buddhism 曹洞宗. ( Another one is 臨濟宗 located in Taiwan).
When I sit upper the top temple, close the eyes and I feel it’s peaceful inner the mind. The energy from nature and the fresh feeling across the body top to bottom. What’s a amazing place to slow down pace.
Additionally, I suggest to buy the inbound bus ticket first before coming to 永平寺temple. It’s 750 yen/ person to east side of Fukui station.

Very impressive, take your time to visit it and take a look inside, it is worth it and very cheap to visit. You will wake through an old temple with many rooms to discover new experiences. If you go down the street a little bit you will also find various cheap ice shops I can just recommend to visit the ice shop screenshoted below

Probably the most beautiful temple I’ve ever seen and been!
Everything looks like in the movie, the atmosphere was cool and spiritually peaceful, maybe because it was cloudy, a bit rainy and misty. The temple is immense! 2 hours aren’t enough to see everything.
I went there by car so it’s very easy to get there, but for those who go by train or by bus it will take time, but definitely worth it!

Huge temple complex that dates back 500 or so years. A lot of it is out of bounds but that doesn't mean you'll be missing anything, there is plenty to see.
It is very ornate in places, the carving on the wood is brilliant.
As a working temple/ monastery there are occasional services and blessings going on, these can be great to witness.

(Translated by Google) There is one Echizen Railway every 30 minutes. It is the closest station to Eiheiji Temple, but it is far so you need to take a bus from here. The station staff will carefully guide you at the manned station. There's nothing in front of the station, so I have no choice but to wait on a bench in the station building.
There is a bus that connects directly to Eiheiji Temple from Fukui Station, so it might be faster and more convenient.

(Translated by Google) This is a pure white and stylish station building that was newly built in 2014.
It was originally Keifuku Electric Railway, but has since continued as Echizen Railway. There was also a line from here to the famous Eiheiji Temple, but it was discontinued in 2002. So from here I decided to use buses and taxis.
The old station building is located behind the new station building, across the tracks, and the building remains today as a community exchange center. It has also been designated as a registered tangible cultural property.
The new station building has an exterior that gives off a sense of Taisho romance despite its newness, making it a very picturesque station building. And this is a manned station. The parking lot is located behind the station.

From this station, I go to either Katsuyama or Mikuni, enjoying the scenery from the train window and taking a walk along the way.
It is a 6.2km walk that extends from here to Eiheiji Temple and includes a walking course called ``Eiheiji Sanro Road'' that uses the Eiheiji Line ruins (discontinued in 2002) and a self-driving section for self-driving cars.
There are also buses to Eiheiji Temple.

Matsuoka Station, a registered tangible cultural property, exudes a charming and nostalgic ambiance. The station building, constructed in 1933, showcases a unique fusion of Japanese and Western architectural styles. Its tiled roof stands out against the white-painted walls, creating an eclectic charm. The friendly station staff adds to the welcoming atmosphere. Notably, the down-line platform boasts old rail pillars that are painted a light blue color.
