Awa Odori festival is a very important event in Tokushima Prefecture. This traditional dance is performed at night and it is a must-see when visiting the prefecture. The museum has exhibitions about the history of Awa Odori and information about the different styles of dancing. The museum also has a performance hall where you can watch the performance live.
Great atmosphere and experience for all age groups. The show has Chinese, English and Japanese explanation which is useful to understand the history and the background stories. The group dancing was very fun.

Do make time to come here if you come to Tokushima.
•PERFORMANCE- 40-ish minutes. Definitely worth going for one of the 4 daily performances! It's a taste of the famous Japanese summer odori-dance festivals. They display captions on the screen behind the narrator in 2 languages. They give a rundown on the evolution of the dance, from old times, to post-war, to now. They then show you each instrument's role alone, and then each dancer's moves. The crowd is also directed to do the basic move in the stands (if you're able to stand; you can do it seated if you can't).
•MUSEUM- Models and pictures abound, with QR codes at numerous stations to see explanation translations.
•Tickets- you can buy a ticket to only the performance, the museum, or the doorway, or in various combinations. The ticket machines have various languages, and a staff member helps you select.

Very interesting museum, gorgeous paintings. I really did not like that there are no English translations and you need a phone connected to wifi to scan a QR code. This should change. The souvenir shop is amazing and has very good quality products. The dance was ok though if you walk in the park at night in July, youll be probably lucky to encounter the dancers practicing. They are outstanding.

Inside this building , there is a souvenir shop, the Bizan Ropeway, and the hall where one can view Awa Odori performances throughout the year, displays of historical Awa Odori items. It is a notable landmark in Tokushima.

Even though we did not understand Japanese, they still engaged us to experience the dance and participate. Very well done in helping us understand the culture (on 2/F). Also, can take the cable car to the peak viewing point (on the 5/F) and the museum (on 3/F).
Mount Bizan is a picturesque mountain located in Tokushima City that offers stunning panoramic views from its summit, which sits at an elevation of 290 meters. Visitors can reach the peak via the Bizan Ropeway, a cable car that also provides access to a museum and dance show at the Awa Odori Kaikan with the purchase of a combined ticket priced at 1620. The views from Mount Bizan are truly priceless and well worth it for those visiting Tokushima City.

Speaking of Tokushima, Awa Odori,
Speaking of Awa Odori, Awa Odori Kaikan,
Speaking of Awa Odori Kaikan, Mt. Bizan.
It feels like
I always come here not for sightseeing,
I'm on a business trip,
After all, it is a mountain that is very close to the city, so if you have some time, you can go in a short time.
You can go up and down from the observation deck, so even those who don't have much time can fully enjoy it. The ropeway is cheap at 1030 yen for a round trip ticket.
Also, after all, because the getting on and off is on the 5th floor of the Awa Odori Kaikan,
You can also see the Awa Odori Museum for only 300 yen, and if the timing is right, you can see the actual Awa Odori in the hall.
I usually visit during the daytime because I am always on the way to work, but I would like to visit at least once during the night.
The two ropeways are connected, so you can see the scenery better if you get on the front and back to see the scenery.
If you ride in the front, the gondola behind you will get in the way and you won't be able to see the scenery well. smile

This is my second visit. Perhaps because it was early spring this time, bumblebees were swarming, and although they rarely sting, I was a little scared. When I hurriedly evacuated to the building, I was told by a young salesclerk that it was a collaboration event for otaku, "It's an advance payment...".
It's good to shift to otaku, but it's not during the Machiasobi period, and most of the tourists are ordinary tourists. In such a situation, ordinary tourists may disappear.

Asutamuland Tokushima is a family-friendly park that centers on science and nature. It offers various water rides, a planetarium, and a hands-on museum where children can learn about the universe, life's nature, and scientific concepts. View the special exhibition "Awa Sengoku Emaki - Hosokawa, Miyoshi, Chosokabe, Hachisuka".
I was lucky enough to listen to the curator's explanation for about an hour, and it was a great experience as I learned a lot of things about this era that I didn't know before.
Until now, the Miyoshi clan had been associated with the image of Lord Nagayoshi, but it was eye-opening to learn that the person who actually ran Awa at the time was Lord Jikyu. This exhibition shows both the rise and decline of Mr. Miyoshi.

The remnants of a fortress constructed in 1585, together with a sculpture of its initial ruler and a museum detailing the history of the castle, can be found at Tokushima Castle Ruins. These stone remains serve as a testament to the castle's past glory and are an important part of Japanese history. Additionally, visitors can learn about the historical significance of this landmark through various exhibits at the adjacent museum.

Not a whole lot to see here. The gates are in tact, and you can see the stone bases where the castle towers once stood, but it’s more of a public park effectively these days. Worth a visit if in the area, but it doesn’t compare to the more intact castles elsewhere in Japan. The museum is definitely worth a visit though.

It is a steep climb without support for wheelchairs. The view on the top is limited by trees and there isn't a castle, but an empty platform. No English explanation if you're looking for it. The park below it is definitely worth a visit.

You can ride the ropeway (cable car) to go up the mountain and see the amazing view of the city from the top. There is a cafe and parks to hang out once up there. There are a lot of good spots to take instagrammable pictures.

Nice park with a city and ocean view.
Be careful, a ropeway has a specific time schedule.

Good view of the city of Tokushima. I hiked up instead of taking the ropeway and it was a rather steep climb. Stop by the local sweets shop Wadanoya (和田乃屋) to pick up some mochi so you can have them after the hike or enjoy them in the shop with green tea.

Amazing spot to check. The problem is to get there. I walked up using the road. Then, changed to an old trail. On the way back went down the old trail near the cable car pillars. Almost got lost.
Anyways, must see!

Beautiful view from the park. Sunset was at around 18:00. After the sunset, the city was lit up beautifully. There was also a restaurant, but I'm not sure how expensive it is.

The peak could be reached by cable car or by private car. I chose to drive because the hill was not high. There were quite a number of parking lots here. Many trees were planted, which made the place very pleasant, especially during the cherry blossom. City view and mountain view were nice. Toilets were built, but the ventilation was very natural.

Lovely place to visit but DO NOT try to hike up. There's a few blogs that show hikes up and they are NOT WORTH IT!!! Just take the ropeway as the hike was steep, full of spiders, snakes, and mosquitos and not even very pretty.

Sakura at Bizan Park in Tokushima City, Japan.
Driving down from Mt. Bizan, many cherry trees lined the road. We had just visited Bizan park and enjoyed the cherry blossoms and the splendid view. Courtesy Wikipedia: Mt. Bizan borders the central Tokushima City area with its gently curved shape and altitude of 290m. In addition to a panoramic view of the city, you can see the Sanuki Mountains, Seto Inland Sea, and the Kishu Mountains from the mountain’s summit. Mt. Bizan is considered a usual tourist spot of Tokushima City and was written about in the ancient Manyoshu (an 8th-century anthology of Japanese poetry).

I enjoyed the drive up to the park with its winding road but when I got to the top I was blown away with the spectacular views of Tokushima and its surrounding area, breath taking. I could see why this area was settled as it is so flat and what seems like a perfect place for a harbour. I wished that I had gone up to the park at night time as I believe that the views would have looked even better with the lights of the city. Fantastic place to visit, I'm glad I went there.
Pleasant small temple. Also see the Hachiman Shrine next door.

(Translated by Google) No. 17 temple.
I went on a walking pilgrimage in August and came this far, but I hurt my foot two days before walking to Yakesanji Temple, and it was so swollen and painful that I decided to give up.
Although it was a hot season, we had a great time walking in silence. It was unfortunate that I had to drop out, but I am aiming to restart next year.
It is said that it was built by Emperor Tenmu (reigned 673-86) as an imperial dojo during the Hakuho period in the latter half of the 7th century. However, the name of the temple at that time was ``Myoshoji''.
The principal image is a seated statue of the Seven Buddhas of Yakushi Nyorai, whose main image is Yakushi Ruriko Nyorai, and is said to have been created by Prince Shotoku, while the side statues of Nikko and Moonlight Bodhisattva are said to have been carved by Gyoki Bodhisattva. Later, in 815, when Kobo Daishi visited to worship these statues, he carved an eleven-faced Kannon statue approximately 1.9 meters in height into a cypress tree and enshrined it there. Daishi also took pity on the village that was suffering from water shortages and murky water, so he dug a well with his own staff, and overnight, fresh water gushed out. Therefore, the area was named ``Ido Village'' and the name of the temple was changed to ``Ido Temple.''
There was a bus stop in front of the gate of Ido-dera Temple, so I was able to take the bus to Tokushima, which was very helpful.

It was less than 3km from the 16th temple, Kannonji Temple, and was almost flat.
From Kannon-ji Temple, I took Prefectural Route 123 and Prefectural Route 29, the same route as the walking pilgrimage route.
As the name of the temple, Ido-dera, suggests, there is a well in the temple grounds that is said to have been dug by Kobo Daishi.
Legend has it that if you look into the well and don't see your figure reflected in the well, there will be a disaster within three years.
Considering that it is adjacent to the Shikoku Sacred Site, we can infer that it was the center of Awa Province.

井戸寺という寺号のとおり、境内には弘法大師が掘ったという井戸があります。
その井戸を覗いて井戸に姿が映らなければ3年以内に厄災があると言い伝えられています。

The highlight, however, is the wide range of souvenirs that are available directly in the temple area. A place that may not be perfect, but still has many positive aspects to offer. 4 stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐

It's about a 1km walk to the downtown area where you can find snacks and pubs.

Accessible for kids and disabled people. Great view over Tokushima and the surrounding areas, even with the mountains in the West. The ride is impressive, but once you're up, there is nothing much, but a simple park and an old pagoda you can't enter. During autumn definitely worth a visit.

(Translated by Google) The Bizan Ropeway is a ropeway that connects the foot station on the 5th floor of the Awa Odori Hall and the summit station on the summit of Mt. Bizan at an altitude of 277 meters.
The altitude of Mt. Bizan is 290m, but the first-class trig point near the ropeway summit station has an altitude of 277m. The highest point at 290m is about a 30 minute walk from the ropeway summit station, past Bizan Park, and along the Bizan Traverse Course.
From the observation deck of Bizan Park, where the ropeway summit station is located, you can look down on the city of Tokushima, and on clear days, you can see the mountains of the Shikoku Mountains, Mt. can be seen.
Bizan Ropeway's business hours vary greatly between summer and winter. The ropeway closes at 5:30 pm from November to March, so if you are going to see the night view or sunset view, be careful not to be late for the last ropeway train. I think it would be better to go up by car at this time of year.
At Sancho Station, a panel of ``Bizan'', which was made into a movie starring Nanako Matsushima in 2007 based on Masashi Sada's novel with Mt. Bizan as its motif, is on display. I saw this movie back then and it made me feel nostalgic.
