The official name is "Uplifted Seabed and Deformed Wave Corrosion", and it is a national natural monument.
I was surprised to see them not only near Aoshima but also along the Nichinan coast.
In Kyushu, there are other places where rare natural phenomena have occurred, such as Takachiho Gorge, which is famous for its columnar joints, and Yabakei Gorge, which is famous for its strangely shaped rocks!
I am impressed by the wonders of nature!

Nature's highlight of rock formations when visiting Aoshima Island. Beautiful and scenic, the ragged rocks do come across as a huge washboard in its appearance, especially when seen from afar before approaching it closer. When we came, it was low tide, so it can be seen very clearly and some people and children would walk out on the rocks, balancing along the way. It's naturally sandy when walking along the shore. It will also lead to the shrine on the island.

Beautiful island near Miyazaki, very scenic, takes about 20 minutes to walk around the island. The beach is quite special as it made up of broken shells instead of sand.

Very interesting formation of rocks, which we have not seen before. When you walk towards the right side on Aoshima island you will pass by a nice shrine. You can surround the island, which is full of tropical plants and trees. Don't forget to stroll up the beach towards Miyazaki. There is a nice park area which is little cooler. Overall very relaxing activity.

I visited Aoshima for the 3rd time in my life for the first time in several years. The first time was about 30 years ago when I was a junior high school student on a school trip. It's nice to be able to revisit the scenery that was burned in my childhood as an adult (although I'm already an old man).
Walk the souvenir shopping street, look at the yellow mailbox, walk the washing rock, visit Aoshima Shrine, and play on the beach in the summer. I think that it is the best sightseeing spot created by nature.

As a person who loves rocks and ocean, this place is wonderful. Also has a shine on the island. The shops before you get there is fun for snacks after walking out there. There is a botanical garden nearby as well.

The Devil’s Washboard, a series of dark rocky sandstone striations. Intriguing. Although one would assume the devil would outsource laundry needs.

First time to see such a thing. It’s pretty in a different kind of way and makes you want to try to walk the entire length until you reach the other side but at the same time you think maybe it’s not a good idea hahaha. Take a close look at the rock formation, take good photos, and appreciate this wonder of nature.

Very unique! Lots of shells, coral rock, and some sea glass. Nice botanical garden to look at on shore. Some free parking but that fills quickly. Parking was cheap across the street 100¥ for 1.5 hrs.

Came on an overcast weekday in autumn at 1045. Place wasn't to busy.
They have parking close by which costs 500 yen or drive slightly further (300 meters) and free public parking.
Even on a cloudy day it was very pretty or amazing to see the natural rock formation.
To get to the island you cross a small bridge.
Walking around the island is cool and it's only a 30 min slow walk.
Definitely worth visiting

Known for the interesting rock formation, we came here at the end of the low tide to check it out. It’s all covered during high tide so plan your visit accordingly. It’s a very walk along the beach and a small shrine on the island.

Very accessible by personal vehicle with plenty of free, easy-to-navigate parking. Clean, modern, and affordable shopping. My favorite shop is UniQlo for well priced stylish clothing.
Aeon Mall is conveniently located on the outskirts of town. However for those without wheels it's a twenty five minute ordeal by bus from the down town... and there aren't many buses.
Aeon Mall is much like a modern shopping mall you'd find in the States, complete with food court, movie theatre, and a huge variety of shopping. There's also a fun arcade. Beat my Space Invader score if you can!
There's a very tasty, reasonably priced Korean food restaurant in the food court, second floor.
On weekends there are often entertainment events geared towards families and children.
Happy shopping.

The Miyazaki Shrine in Japan is an ancient Shinto shrine made of cedar, surrounded by woodland hiking paths. It is one of the Jinguu shrines related to the first Emperor, and boasts a great and majestic style with its important cultural properties. The area is vast and peaceful, with birds singing and sunlight shining through tree leaves making it a charming oasis. Visitors can also purchase many souvenirs including various kinds of amulets.
Beautiful shrine with a calm atmosphere. It wasn’t crowded at all when we visited so exploring the shrine through its large grounds and garden area was amazing.

Love this sacred place to visit! The first emperor, Jimmu, is enshrined in this shrine. You can also enjoy walking in the solemn forest. From the end of April to the beginning of May, big wisteria tree, which is believed to be more than 400 years old, is in bloom. If you have time, you should also go to the prefectural museum and traditional houses in the northern part of the forest. In the east of the forest, you can also visit Inari shrine, which has beautiful red gates dedicated to the God. Parking is free of charge.

Wishing some high-end Japanese hotels started to change their outdated mindsets and start admitting foreigners wearing tattoos in the hot spring! It is a shame paying a high amount to stay in this resort and being unable to use the facilities because guests with tattoos are not admitted. In my humble opinion, it would be much better if these rules were - at least - not applied to a foerigner...

Still looking luxurious (so, a phoenix). But if you do not have transportation, do not go. Taxi fare from Miyazaki Stn. is about 2,400 yens. Bus service is very limited. It looks like an aging white elephant. I have no idea what other facilities, except the hotel and a pricey restaurant, can offer to the visitor.

Aoshima Beach Park is a must-visit destination in Miyazaki, Japan. It's located on a small island connected to the mainland by a bridge and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and active volcanoes. At low tide, visitors can witness the natural wonder known as Oni no Sentakuba or Devils Washboards, where perfectly straight rows of rocks are formed.
Chill public space to enjoy some food or beverages from the surrounding stalls. Several pop-up restaurants and food trucks along the perimeter during summer months. Uminoie Coffee Stand being the permanent fixture. Lots of benches and makeshift canvas parasols shading the beach folk.

Nice spot for a quick bite or some lunch. Amazing view but be careful as it can be a tiny bit windy as expected so make sure your food doesn’t flying away. Great spot right on the beach. Everyone who works there is really friendly and the vibe is great. We ate at three of the five different shops and all were quite good. Florante Miyazaki is a flower park which is known for its brightly hued blooms that you can see throughout the year.
The reason for this is that there are a number of different flowers on display which bloom in different seasons, and this means that you will not be disappointed no matter when you visit.
Even in the winter months there is something to see here, as the gardens are festooned in lights and take on a fairytale like quality.
You can also go trekking around the park or ride on a small wooden train which cuts through the countryside and lets you see the flowers without having to work up a sweat.

The Miyazaki Prefectural Museum of Nature and History, established in 1971, showcases a collection of artifacts and farmhouses that depict the area's historic significance. The museum features well-curated exhibits spanning from 10,000 BCE to present day on Miyazaki Prefecture's natural and cultural history. Visitors can explore various interesting displays such as maps, animations, and ancient relics. Admission is free but all the signs are entirely in Japanese with photo translation assistance available through Google Translate.
This place was amazing! We spent a few hours walking around to learn nature, history, agriculture, animals and etc. There were a couple of small theatres to watch the videos about the forest in 4 seasons and Takachiho Kagura. So much info to have a read, look, and listen, which made us inspired. I normally take many photos but got into the showcases and completely forgot. No food or drinks inside but a drink space at the entrance. The parking was huge and spacey. It was located just next to Miyazaki shrine, a few min drive from there. It's worth visiting when you come around.

The Miyazaki City Phoenix Zoo is a low-key animal park that offers visitors the chance to see a variety of exotic creatures while also enjoying an amusement park, water slides, and pool. Whoever thought of putting an amusement park inside a zoo? - Great idea! But they like to charge. Parking 400 yen, rides per person around 300 yen each. We did notice lots of people had wrist bands getting on all the rides for free but we weren't offered the opportunity to purchase them. There is also a basic restaurant and gift shop on site. The restaurant meals were about 900 yen for adults and about 550 yen for kids meals. They are renovating the zoo at the moment and the new enclosures are much better than the old. Well worth it though. We even saw a black swan feeding the fish all by itself!

Zoo inside the Phoenix zone of Miyazaki, near the coast. Reachable with a free shuttle. I went there on Tuesday evening, so few people were visiting the park, I counted 4 people other than me. Anyway, after paying I received a map and I started to walk to see animals. Honestly, they are a bit sad and I thought they were like that because of the state of enclosures, small and with very few details remembering animal's habitat. It was a pity. There are several species, but after one hour I finished my visit and went away. There are services inside, like a restaurant and a pool.

It's a paradise for children. I've been playing happily all the time, so my stay has been longer than I expected. The entrance fee is 550 yen for adults and 210 yen for children from 4 years old, but the satisfaction was more than the price. They also hold events such as workshops, and when I went there, I was able to make a key holder. It is a recommended facility for families with children, but it will definitely make your stay longer, so if you plan to stop by for sightseeing, you should think about it a little.

The place is indeed very enjoyable for kids, but adults will be able to enjoy as well. There’s a horror house and a VR for the aurora borealis that adults would be able to appreciate. You can also ride the replica of the Gemini capsule; just call for a staff. The entrance is 550 yen. There is some wait time for stuff but it’s not too long. Good way to pass the time.

Due to bad weather, I postponed my sightseeing in Aoshima and went to a planetarium for the first time in over a decade.
I didn't get bored because the older sister explained in real time rather than recording, and I enjoyed the short story of the shooting star in the second half, which had beautiful visuals.
Sometimes it's nice to go to the planetarium. I was very impressed with how the exhibits were designed to interest children.

A fantastic place for both kids and adults. There are many interactive activities. If you come on the weekdays, it's practically empty.

朝から、閉館するまで居ました。
プラネタリウムは年齢的にちょっと難しかったかな?とも思いましたが、低学年の子供でも星の綺麗さに圧倒されてました。
子供達は最初から最後まで全力で楽しんでました。

I was there from morning till closing.
Was the planetarium a little difficult for your age? I thought that too, but even a child in the lower grades was overwhelmed by the beauty of the stars.
The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves from beginning to end.

Great place to take the kids. Need to add English descriptions as it was all in Japanese. Great hands on and interactive displays, was good to see, and should visit if you are in Miyazaki.

Here you will find a science museum which has a whole host of interactive galleries that allow visitors to get hands on and learn all about science.
There is also a sizeable planetarium here which is said to be one of the biggest in the world, and you can check out exhibits that include rockets, robots and other scientific wonders that were made in Japan.

Lots of interactive displays (great for children any maybe adults), but a bit small and lacking.

Miyazaki Heiwadai Park is a vast expanse of greenery and tranquility, featuring haniwa burial statues, a large lake, play areas, and the 1940 Peace Tower. It is easily accessible by bus from Miyako city, albeit with a short walk from the bus stop. The park offers ample opportunities for nature lovers to soak in lush surroundings teeming with trees and colorful tulips during springtime.
Nice park in Miyazaki city. Gates close at 5pm, so be careful to go home before gates close.

Is a nice park with a big lake. Even is a rainy day but we are enjoying the quiet and cooling park. We could feel peace feeling. Take chance for a short hike around the lake (2.05km). Besides, you will also find some nice mini statues near the park. A small playground just close to it, kids will be enjoying it.

The tower in Miyazaki, built in 1940, was a symbol of Japan's expansion and military might, linked to the mythology of the nation's first emperor, Jimmu. It was adorned with militaristic imagery and slogans, but was later renamed "Peace Tower" by American occupation forces in 1946, who removed its controversial inscriptions and statues.

It was so green (summertime) and picturesque., clean and relaxing. There is a bus that goes there from Miyako city but you have to walk a bit far from where the bus stops. We saw doves and it was indeed a peaceful place, as the name suggests. Lots of trees and greenery. I highly recommend it for nature lovers.
I added some photos when we visit this place on a springtime. The tulips were so colorful.

If you like nature strongly recommend to visit this park. For kits there are two play area. One is small and the other one is large space. When I hear birds singing, I feel very comfortable.

Picturesque views of the Tower of Peace, haniwa burial.mound figurines (replicas), beautiful paths in the forest and along the lake, where a lot of ducks swim. We were there in spring so had an opportunity of gazing on the sakura trees in bloom. Walking there is a therapy for mind and very calmful.

An iconic park of Miyazaki city. all the stones used in building the tower were brought from several Asian countries once Imperial Japan was their ruler.

The park seems to need maintenance, and would definitely be better during any season but winter, but seeing the sunset over the peace tower was still a wonderful experience!
