The famous Ishiwarizakura, also known as the Rock-Splitting Cherry Tree, is a magnificent landmark that has been growing for over 400 years out of a crack in a large granite boulder. This incredibly beautiful tree blooms early and attracts many tourists, making it sometimes difficult to capture its magical appearance on camera.
In winter season they cover the tree to protect it. But it was magical anyway🥺🌸

The price are a little high but this the most convenient place to buy souvenirs, Morioka is like in the middle of tohoku so you can easily find anything there that is produce in the region. Tips for tourist, some shops have detax counter but you will have to spend more than 4000 yens in. The Morioka Hachimangu Shrine, established in 1062 and reconstructed in 2006, is renowned for its yearly equestrian processions and archery displays. This breathtaking shrine boasts a rich cultural heritage and has both ancient and modern elements. It's a vibrant and jovial place to be with its lively autumn festival, radiating beauty from all angles.
Absolutely beautiful! My friend and I came here for Setsubon in February and had so much fun watching the ceremony despite the cold. There are lots of different fortunes for under 500¥. The temple is located near the bus center and is a close walk to many restaurants and convenience stores. A must see if you’re in Morioka.

The Bank of Iwate Red Brick Building, an architectural marvel designed by Tatsuno Kingo, was constructed in 1911 and now serves as a museum and performing arts venue. The building features stunning redbrick exteriors that have stood the test of time. Though some areas require paid admission, there is also a free section that allows visitors to explore the beauty of this historical landmark.
A must to see in morioka! There are a free entry lane but if you want to see all of the bank you need to pay 300 yen.😇

My favorite place to visit in Morioka. The architecture jewel should be preserved for another hundred years. Cannot imagine a bank could look like this and still operation during early 2010s. Must be a very special feel to be its customer. With a minimal fee, you could access the grand tour of this place. You may find it similar to Tokyo Station's design, because they share the same designers. Bookmark this place if you're visiting Tohoku Area.
Jason Hung — Google review
The same designer as 丸之內 tokyo station, very beautiful architecture using geometry and you can find lots of details behind the apparent symmetry. Half (left handside from the entrance) is free entry, the other half requires a fee (300 yen? Sorry, can't really recall now cos i didn't have time to explore then). But the entry-free area is impressive enough.
The staff (esp the uncle at the reception lobby) was super friendly and showed us how to take the best IG photos!

Very eye catching building in Iwate city. We drove it and it immediately captured my attention. Later on when I was going for lunch, I walked past this building again and admired the historical architecture. I did not go inside the building. I understand that the building is being used as a museum. But it was still a sight to behold.

It was completed in 1911 (Meiji 44) as the head office of Morioka Bank. In 1936, the Iwate Shokusan Bank (later Iwate Bank) took over the building and began using it as its head office.
It was designed by Tatsuno Kingo, the architect of Tokyo Station, and is the only building he designed and remains in the Tohoku region.

Sakurayama Shrine is a serene Shinto shrine located amidst large boulders and seasonal cherry blossoms. It is renowned for its unique and entertaining fortune-telling experience, which includes purchasing an umbrella fortune like a small toy. Although the fortunes are written in Japanese, there is an application that can translate them into your own language by taking a picture. The shrine also offers a place to hang your fork as a warning to yourself or take it home as a souvenir.
The shrine was the final stop on the day tour of Morioka. It is a typical Japanese shrine. There is a short path which leads to a pair of fox statues surrounding a shrine.
This is a shrine where you ring the bells for good luck in addition to prayer.
Lots of restaurants nearby if you are hungry!

The pleasure of the shrine is a “fortune”, but the “fortune” here is a lot of originals and fun!
I tried to buy an “umbrella fortune” for the first time.
like a small toy! I love it!
The contents of the fortune-telling are written in Japanese, but there is an application that automatically translates to the language of your own country when you take a picture, so if you use it, you will understand the contents.
If you want to warn yourself, you can bring it home, or there is a place to hang a fork in front of it.
I brought it home, though.
let’s try it!

Located conveniently on the edge of the park, this shrine is a hot spot for food stalls come festival time, especially during Sansa Aug. 1-4. The character at the entrance changes outfits with seasons/events so it is fun to revisit. There is also an Olaf Daruma near the charms/omamori. I visited the shrine around 11 am on Sunday, September 3, 2023.
The admission fee is 300 yen, but if there is no temple staff at the reception desk, there is an explanation that says, ``Please put 300 yen in the box at the reception desk and bring the pamphlet.'' It was a good thing that there was a receptionist when I was there, but I think it would be better to bring cash with you so you don't have change in case someone is not there. You are free to take photos.
A group of four women was on a tour. Also, at the temple, sutras were chanted during the memorial service, and the atmosphere was full of the atmosphere of an old temple.
I think The 500 Arhats is spectacular and worth watching. I think the tour of Gohyaku Arhat itself takes about 30 minutes.
Since it is a historic temple, we were able to see the temple gate with its wonderful carvings, and we spent about an hour sightseeing throughout.

Only a few tourists ventured to this quiet temple while I was here, but it's entirely worth a visit. Located in the midst of other temples, it has serene grounds with a variety of interesting trees. It's known for its hall of statues of the 500 disciples of the Buddha, each carved with their own expression by famous sculptors from Kyoto in the Edo period. It's an amazing sight. Mitsuishi Shrine is a small but historically significant shrine located in Morioka. It features three giant stones next to the main hall, which are said to be connected to an ancient legend involving a demon and a god. According to the legend, the god chained a demon to these stones, leaving handprints on them, which is believed to be the origin of the prefecture's name, Iwate, meaning "stone hand.
Very cute shrine in morioka near many other shrines and temples! It is easy to walk to and there is ample parking in nearby lots or shrines. Also, read the sign for some fun facts about the demon hand prints!

While walking around morioka city we came across this place; 3 huge rocks which is believed that their is hand prints of demon on the rocks
The shrine is small; it’s a cute place to visit not far from iwate park
Just come if you are around the area
The story of the shrine:
"Mitsuishi" means "three stones", so the name of the shrine is derived from the three big rocks.
Long, long ago, when Mount Iwate volcano to the northwest of Morioka erupted, three big rocks were shot out from the volcano.
The people in this area believed that the Gods lived in the rocks as "God Mitsuishi".
On one occasion, a demon appeared and bullied the people.
So, the people asked God Mitsuishi for help.
The God fought off the demon and tied him to the big rocks of the God.
The demon promised never to do that again, and the God made him seal his hand print on the rock as a certificate.
Then the demon returned back to far mountain...

This is the origin of the regions name which Means stone hands. Located behind a large Buddhist temple and has interesting history but it is quite small. The goushuin (shine stamp) is received at the sakurayama shine and is worth getting after your visit.

This is just a small shrine in a residential area, but worth a visit for history buffs and people interested in ancient legends. Next to the main hall stand three giant stones. They looked to me like an ancient grave where the dirt had washed away, but there's no capstone. A legend says that a god chained a demon to the stones, in which it left handprints. This is supposedly the origin of the prefecture name Iwate, which means 'stone hand'.

The coffee at the back of the cafe is also very delicious. The garnished cookies are not too sweet and go well together! I had a good time relaxing.
I visited this time on my way home, but I definitely want to go next time.

As a fan of modern architecture, I'm really grateful that it's been reused in this way and that I can go inside.
Even though it was October, it was hot in Morioka, and when I tried to order iced coffee, it was sold out so I ordered hot, but it was rich and easy to drink.
What impressed me the most was the raspberry vinegar soda that I ordered after my meal!
It’s sweet and sour and really delicious! It was so delicious that I thought I'd order more. I will definitely order again if I go there again.
I also had the pineapple vinegar soda, but the raspberry one was better.

It was originally built in 1891 as a banya (firefighting team office) for the local fire department, and was renovated in 1913. Architectural designs from the Taisho period, such as the hexagonal watchtower, remain throughout the building. Although it is a landscape preservation building, it remained vacant for a long time, but it has now been renovated and opened.

Morioka Zoological Park offers visitors the opportunity to observe and interact with a variety of animals, including giraffes, elephants, and Japanese macaques. The park provides feeding experiences as well as open space for picnics. English translations of animal names are available to help educate visitors about the different species. Strollers may be necessary for younger children due to the size of the park.
I had a delightful time walking around and viewing the animals. The zoo was really clean and the animals were well cared for. I recommend going early if there is a holiday because it gets packed!

It is beautiful and really nice walk. You can see everything in about 2.5 hours. Our boys enjoyed being able to go inside with the goats and pet them. Name translation in English are provided which is very thoughtful. Our boys love to learn about animals and being able to know the name of the species is great. If your children are on the younger side you’ll definitely want a stroller. The gift shop is great. Some of the animals looked like they needed some extra care and that is the reason for the four stars. Overall a good place to see.

There is a cool playground in the woods for children. They lend nets for catching bugs in the spring and summer. It will be closed until around 2022 for renovations.I hope all the things I love about the zoo will remain!

Free little museum. Not too much for English speakers other than the architecture. But if you know Kenji Miyazawa or the other guy in the title it has some neat things. Good atmosphere and worth it if you’re near by and like the architecture style

The building was once a local bank, the exhibition told its history and some on JP literature, which lacks translation so could be a bit hard for foreigners like us to grasp. The cafe many recommended was not that attractive in reality, both the ambience and the menu options. Staff was v quiet and didn't really care about people coming in or out... A great comparison to that in nearby heritage bank building, so will recommend going there instead if you don't have a lot of time to wander around downtown Morioka

Parc Avenue KAWATOKU is a high-end department store known for its impeccable cleanliness and excellent staff. Most of the stores feature pricey brand names, but there are also affordable options like LOFT. The basement floor is a highlight, offering small eateries, food stores with delicious and reasonably priced meals, and a variety of wonderful sweets in the omiyage section. Even if you're just window shopping, exploring the basement floor can be enjoyable.
Cool place, easy enough for only English speakers and readers. Get the Google translate app and you can read the stuff they sell. Its expensive compared to some stuff, but good quality stuff. Our tour went there for the Morioka Sansa Festival before it started.

Not enough selection of deli items for me to kill myself with, but they do have some decent stuff here. I like Aeon better than most places including here.

Kawatoku is a higher end department store. It is impeccably clean. The staff are excellent. Most of the stores are pricey brand names. But there are some affordable stores such as LOFT that I often go to. Also, the basement floor is great! There are some small eateries and many food stores that sell delicious and affordable meals. Also, the omiyage section has a lot of wonderful sweets. Even if it's just for window shopping, browsing in the basement floor is fun.
Unfortunately the Kawatoku closes much earlier than other malls, at 7pm, so the store hours are not as convenient for those who can't stop buy during the daytime.
There is a bus stop right outside of Kawatoku that goes in the direction of Morioka Station. There are usually some taxis waiting outside of Kawatoku as well.

Old school department store on the top 6 six floors with a great food market in the basement. Especially for the seafood, meats and poultry.

A department store, with a food court and supermarket in the basement. It's expensive but it's a good place to find nice food or a fancy present for someone.

Asabiraki Corporation is a sake brewery that offers tours and tastings, even during the off-season. Visitors can enjoy a walking tour of the brewery and sample various types of sake at the shop. The friendly staff are accommodating and provide translation devices for communication. While it's best to visit during the brewing season, guests can still learn about the sake-making process and find unique sake offerings only available at the brewery.

I visited the sake brewery on Sunday during Golden Week.
It wasn't the season for preparation, but I was able to listen to an explanation inside the factory.
You can sample various sake at the shop, so it would be nice to find your favorite sake.
Next time I would like to go when it is ready.

Happy to take Western money, but not happy to have westerners staying longer than a few minutes. We bought a bottle of sake because they told us we could drink it there, but as soon as we opened it they suggested we should leave because “more people are coming.” We had not even had a sip yet. After much embarrassing back and forth, and left us alone, but it was a hassle. Sadly, I do not recommend.

You can sample Japanese sake, and the staff will carefully explain the characteristics of sake.
In addition to sake, there are plenty of souvenirs such as delicacies, so it's hard to choose.
Daiginjo soft serve is recommended at a reasonable price of 300 yen.

We came for a visit (April 2023) to the store/brewery. The friendly lady at the store said that it was not the brewing season which typically is around Oct/Nov but still kindly offered us a walking tour of the brewery and some sake tasting. It was a wonderful experience, we came unannounced and they accommodated us instantly. The lady used a translation device to communicate with us which we were grateful for. It was nice to see the brewery although not fully operational at that time, the bottling plant was running so we got to see that. Sake was nice, we bought one for ourselves, could have purchased more if our luggage permitted us to.

(Translated by Google) A sake brewery in Morioka that I stopped by on my staff trip.
I had no prior information and had no expectations.
However, I found out that the sake brewery here is a wonderful place.
First of all, I arrived a little earlier than the meeting time because I was working with the trip organizer.
Not knowing the secretary's feelings, I entered the product hall without thinking anything.
Then there's a tasting corner, right?
I was told that I could sample three types for the time being, so I tried them.
Most of the drinks seem to be dry, but there was one that had a delicious aftertaste.
There was a paid tasting drink available for 300 yen, so I decided to try that as well.
There are two types and it costs a total of 600 yen, but if you like sake, I think it's worth the money.
It was a sake that seemed to have a gorgeous aroma even before I drank it.
At this point, a senior colleague from my workplace arrived, and as if he wanted me to try it too, he gave us a free tasting. The sake, which I thought had a good aftertaste at first, turned out to be delicious.
At this point, it was time to meet up and we went on a tour of the sake brewery.
When I returned from the brewery tour, I had another free tasting with everyone at work. I thought I would get drunk enough if I drank this much.
I wanted to buy all the drinks I thought were delicious and take them home, but my budget didn't allow for that, so I bought one paid tasting drink and the first drink I thought was delicious and went home. I did.
If you like Japanese sake, I think it's a place you can stop by.
Also, the uncle who explained about sake was really good.

It's a very fun place, with lots of tastings, high-quality sake samples available for 3 coins, and a corner selling delicious snacks.
I end up buying them for my home, for souvenirs, etc.
I think Asakai's sake has the best value for money in a good way.
You can buy Junmai Daiginjo class sake at the price of Junmai Ginjo class from other sake breweries. In any case, the alcoholic beverages are of a high standard and are generally reasonably priced.
We recommend the unpasteurized bottled sake that can only be purchased here.
They will fill the bottle on the spot, and they provide a stylish service by filling the bottle to the very limit of the cap.
It is a soft and delicious sake with a natural sweetness and no harsh taste.
