Echigo Hillside Park is a scenic national park that offers visitors a variety of activities throughout the year. During the summer months, families can enjoy a lively water park and various play areas for children, including an indoor play area. The park also boasts stunning gardens and plenty of space for walking and picnicking. In winter, visitors can engage in snow sports before retreating to the indoor play area.
Decided to drop by the park on route from Tokamachi to Niigata City. Glad we did it as Echigo hillside Park was a really beautiful and spacious park, you can easily spend half a day there. Many variants, including award winning roses. Caught a water show and was pleasantly surprised with sound track used.

I enjoyed it best in summer because my son loves the water play area, the bounce cloud, the childrens play area, the indoor play area..... Soooo much to do for children! And beautiful gardens too! We can spend the whole day and not get bored. We can take our own food or easily buy food there. Winter is fun too but not so much to do but it's nice to play in the snow and then go to the indoor play area.

What a great park for families to spend the day. Full of places to explore, the park has magnificent displays of seasonal flowers and plenty of areas with activities. The tent area where families can relax and spend the day in their own tent is one of the more progressive things I have seen living in Japan. Worth the visit!

A good place to walk by yourself, family, friends and couple. But it’s too hot to visit this place in summer.
The rose garden is beautiful and the food quality of Rose cafe is good. I recommended Momo soda in summer, strawberries soda is not very good in this season.
You can go to the park and have fun with friends or family members.

City Hall Plaza Aore Nagaoka is a unique and convenient public facility located in front of Nagaoka Shinkansen station. It's an ideal spot to catch local games, with easy access via public transportation. The plaza is designed to withstand heavy snowfall, featuring covered passages and a roof over the square in front of the hall. Inside, visitors will find a fully equipped space with a large center vision. Despite its eccentric appearance, it's worth visiting for its quirky and casual atmosphere.

Surprised to visit the center of Nagaoka for the first time in 30 years! ! . The former gymnasium is gone and reborn as a quirky and casual facility. It has been reborn as an unforgettable building at first sight. Actually, inside is the public institution of the city. There are no shops other than convenience stores. However, since it is free to visit, it is okay to enter while strolling around the city. There is also a rest area, so if you get tired after walking around, it might be a good idea to take a rest.

I used it to watch the home game of Niigata Albirex BB.
It is located in front of Nagaoka Shinkansen station, so public transportation is convenient even though it is a local city. Aore Nagaoka is a heavy snowfall area, so it is connected from the station by a passage that does not enter the rain or wind.
There is also a roof over the square in front of the hall.
The hall is fully equipped, including a large center vision.
The seats are quite small, but the arena is so close that there is a sense of realism. The number of seats seemed small, but there were 2,800 people on the day of the event, so it seems that there are unexpectedly many seats. No, it will need refurbishment.
I hope you can see B1 in Aore Nagaoka after renovation.

The Tsugunosuke Kawai Memorial is a small museum that showcases the achievements of the military leader during the Boshin War. The museum was originally a private house that has been renovated to hold exhibits related to Tsugunosuke Kawai and his contributions to strengthening the Nagaoka domain. Phone reservations are required in advance, but same-day bookings may be possible.

It was a small but impressive facility. Rather than Kawai Tsuginosuke, who was created in Ryotaro Shiba's "Toge", it is a presence that is mixed with merit and demerit in local evaluation. Therefore, I feel that I understand a little why the tombstone is so damaged.
He may have been self-righteous because he was excellent, but the clan had no one to rely on, and even though he gave Tsuginosuke full authority to negotiate non-war negotiations, the result was that his hometown was reduced to ashes.
Although the government army should be hated, Tsuginosuke may have been blamed for part of the responsibility. I feel that it was an era when excellent people were more pathetic.
Here in Nagaoka, I was able to hear negative voices who did not regard Tsuginosuke as a hero. It is very different from Kochi, which never allows negative voices to Ryoma.
In Kochi, even I, who is a fan of Ryoma, would be disgusted, but Nagaoka is a good place.
I think that Tosa, Matsuyama, Kagoshima, Nagaoka, and Ryotaro Shiba are great novelists, but I also think that the merits and demerits of mixing fact and truth are also great.

Niigata Prefectural Museum of History is a large museum located on a hillside in Sekihara, covering an area of 10,000 square meters. It offers insights into the history and culture of Niigata Prefecture, with exhibits on the Jomon Period and life in the snow country. The museum features three galleries: History of Niigata, Life in Snow Country, and The Making of Rice.
This is one of the better natural history museums. You really get a feel for what it was like to live in the area 100 years ago, or 7000 years ago.
The star of the show is the Jomon fire pottery, but they have foot impressions made of their kids, like prehistoric baby photos. Also don't miss the tooth modifications. That stuff can't be undone, and it lasts 3000 years (of your teeth do, which they did in this case). To me the fire pottery looks more like water but it's just a decoration.
Andrew Thompson — Google review
Amazing display of Niigata's history and what has historically contributed to its contemporary character. The museum is separated into five different sections: Living with Snow, Niigata's history, Rice Culture, and the Jomon Period life, and Jomon Period artifacts/culture.
The entirety of the museum displays are in Japanese only, but there is a listening device that carries English, so all you have to do is input the number of the display, and you can hear brief explanations for most of the artifacts and scenes on display.
Each section shares a little bit of Niigata's history and backgrounds while also supplying a glimpse of what contributed to what Niigata is today. I'd recommend the museum for anyone looking to take a crash course in what it means to be a Niigata resident.

I became fascinated with alpacas after visiting this farm.
You can purchase food in gachapon.
(When you click it, you will receive the expectant gaze of the alpaca 😄) You can also feed it in the feeding container provided.
You can give it to me with your palm.
I am impressed by the alpacas who eat well.
If you give it to me with your palm
The alpaca can pick it up just by using the ω part of its mouth.
(Perhaps it was because he was a child with short teeth?)
When a lot of alpacas come to me
I have to give it evenly to everyone.
Alpacas sometimes get into fights, so
It seemed like a good idea to give it to everyone quickly.
I was a little surprised because I didn't know when to spit until we touched each other.
I tried to be careful about the food, and I never got caught.
Everyone was such a nice kid, and we just had a relaxing time.
It was my first time visiting this place, but it has become my favorite place.
Admission is free, but there is a donation box at the entrance to the alpaca farm for donations to help the alpacas live a healthy life.
A place that I want to remain forever.
I will try my best to help each time I visit.

However, as I looked at the guide map, there were over 30 animals at Aburao Farm alone, so I was very satisfied. When I saw the alpaca sign, I turned and drove down a slightly narrow road, wondering if I was really in a place like this? I was surprised to see so many alpacas suddenly come into view. It's already paradise. Admission is free, and the feed fee is 100 yen per gacha. I think it's a good deal because you can feed them as many times as you want by picking up about 3 grains each in one gacha. It's soothing just to look at them, and they're really cute when you feed them. The warning to avoid getting into a fight and getting spit on while feeding was very helpful.
The alpaca enclosure was also kept clean, and when I went there just after 9 o'clock, there were about 3 managers working there. I'm really grateful that this is free. Although it was a small amount, we made a donation.
The zookeepers don't seem to greet or talk to them since it's a free facility, but if you do talk to them, they'll just talk to you. It may be better to think of us as being shown the alpacas as a courtesy, rather than as customers. I really enjoyed it.

I have posted the same content on another travel review site, but I will repost it here as a memorandum.
I visited in the summer of 2019, so I apologize if the current situation is different.
Below is a review from that time.
I came to Nagaoka from Niigata City to eat ramen, but I didn't have much time to spare, so I searched for tourist spots and this place caught my eye. I decided to try it out, and it turned out to be a great decision.
In Niigata City, there is a facility called ``Ikutopia'' that breeds alpacas, but the number of animals raised and the sense of distance between them were incomparable.
The day we visited was a midsummer day with a maximum temperature of 35 degrees Celsius, but many alpacas were there to welcome us. I think there were about 20 of them.
For 100 yen, you can feed the alpacas, which brings you closer to the alpacas, and the sight of them eating so deliciously was soothing.
The nature of Yamakoshi along the way was also wonderful, and I had two rich experiences at once. I would definitely like to visit again.
Please note that the ranch itself is very small and there is almost nothing around it (though just being surrounded by nature was enough for me), so don't have too high expectations.
However, if you like nature and animals, I think you will be satisfied even for a short time.

I headed there with this hope. Although it was during the holidays, the venue wasn't too crowded and I was able to park after a short wait. It was a small venue, I bought food for 200 yen, and I gingerly put my hand out, but I thought, ``No! That's scary!'' When I looked closely, I saw that it was an alpaca. Its lower teeth were shaped like sockets, and it definitely looked like an alpaca. That's scary 😂,,, but I managed to feed it and was proud. Mommy was trying to get some food quickly, and the frantic alpaca was spitting on her from behind. Still, 🦙 in the photo was cute.
I think small children can enjoy it with peace of mind. I borrowed the toilet and it was very clean.

You can eat and buy it at restaurants and izakayas in Niigata City without having to go all the way to Tochio, but I came here to see what it was like.
It's a big village in the mountains 💡 I wonder why thick fried tofu is a specialty here? I wonder if it was written somewhere...
Although it is in the mountains, it is lively with tourists and locals⤴️
Since I was there, I went to the station cafeteria and ate ``Aburaage Soba'' 🍜 Next time, I went to an outside specialty store that specializes in tofuage (deep-fried tofu is fried there) and had a fried tofu festival by pouring soy sauce over it and eating it ✌️
It goes without saying that fried tofu soba soaks up the soup.
To put it another way, the fried tofu outside was served in the orthodox way, with green onions on top and soy sauce poured over it, but it was freshly fried and delicious💡
Well, when you eat at a place like this, the atmosphere and the seasoning make it taste even better.
Which is better around here, soba or udon?
It wasn't Hegi Soba.

Freshly fried tofu is delicious, and even if it is fried, it tastes great with soy sauce!

The raw sake from “Kagetora” (sake) is irresistible for sake lovers.
I found a curry vending machine outside the store! ! ! !
I realized that there is something like this.
As an aside... It's not suitable for sleeping in the car (due to location issues), so I think it's best to enjoy this place as a stop-over roadside station!

(Translated by Google) A small ski resort. There is only one lift, but the lift and rental are cheap, so it's perfect for beginners and families. The course is a little narrow and there is a slope just after getting off the lift, so you will need courage. However, the lifts stopped occasionally and operated safely, so I was able to take my child with me with peace of mind.

Yamamoto Memorial Park is a peaceful place where you can visit the reconstructed family home of Isoroku Yamamoto, the commander-in-chief of the Combined Fleet. The park offers insight into his early life and living conditions during that time. While there is a memorial museum nearby, the park itself provides free and unattended access to the recreated Japanese house from the early Showa era. Although photography inside the memorial hall is prohibited, visitors can capture memories in this historical setting.

????? — Google review
(Translated by Google) The park itself is not very special, but it is significant that it houses the birthplace of Field Marshal Isoroku Yamamoto, the 21st Commander-in-Chief of the Combined Fleet (restored after being destroyed in the Nagaoka air raid).
He was an intelligent general who remained opposed to war against the United States until the very end because he studied at Harvard University and deeply understood the industrial power of the United States. He was awarded the title of Field Marshal after his death in action over Bougainville Island during a tour of the front line.
The bust of Marshal Yamamoto in the park overlaps with the trees in the background, making it unnoticeable, so I would like to see it improved.
It is recommended that you visit it together with the Yamamoto Isoroku Memorial Museum and the Kawai Tsuginosuke Memorial Museum.

Aside from the person himself, this is the place where he was born and his family.

You can learn about housing conditions at the time.

Riverside Senshu is a two-story mall that offers an indoor shopping experience. It features casual dining options and a lively food court. The mall's appearance is humble, yet it boasts a wide range of retail stores that cater to various tastes and preferences. Visitors can browse through the many shops without worrying about the weather outside. In addition, Riverside Senshu has plenty of seating areas where shoppers can take breaks or enjoy their meals in comfort.
