The Oya History Museum, a one-of-a-kind attraction, is situated in an old quarry that boasts an impressive system of giant underground chambers used for exhibitions and concerts. The sheer size of the interior and its fascinating history will leave visitors stunned. It's advisable to bring warm clothing as it can get quite chilly inside. This is a perfect meeting place with convenient parking facilities available nearby. Visitors should also remember to bring a light shirt as the caves are typically around 6 degrees Celsius in temperature.
great place to meet. easy parking. take a thin shirt because inside the caves the temperature is around 6 degrees.

The quarry-turned-cavern museum is a bit far from Utsunomiya downtown, connected by just a narrow prefectural road and if you bother to use public transportation, an hour bus ride from the central station.
Nevertheless it's a unique experience because to my knowledge, it's the only subterranean museum in Japan. Worth a visit especially if you are into history and art. The cavern turned out to be much bigger than what I expected. It's said it started relatively small since the Edo period and later the exploitation of the stone picked up during the industrialization of Japan afterwards (AFAIK it was only closed for commercial quarrying in 1970s). In some places, the differences of the etched bedrock and walls due to manual and modern mechanical masonry techniques are shown.
There were also interesting permanent art exhibitions inside the cavern. They also exhibited the photos of films and TV series that took place in the cavern, one of them is cult TV series Yuusha Yoshihiko (I think it was one of the episodes in 1st season).

The outside is beautiful but I enter the underground museum itself. There is a weird photo I have captured and it’s pretty cold. And I felt something and had a bad headache after the sightseeing.

It's a great place to visit during the hot summer. The whole tour only takes about 30 minutes so don't plan on it taking up a lot of your day.
It's like a cave so it's really chilly and you might want to prepare a light windbreaker or jacket. It's amazing to imagine that people carried such heavy rocks on their backs.
The cave was the location for many movie shootings or music videos and so on. Even Enya visited a few years ago, it seems?
You should make this one part of your whole day itinerary. There is a nearby Stone Temple and a stone quarry also not too far away.

Lovely place, worth to go. The huge cave have treated with soft background music and lighting effect. It’s cold inside the cave, which likely a super large fridge to freeze people 😂

An awesome place to take beautiful photos of nature (and of course ourselves as well). It is literally a natural refrigerator so please do wear a thick clothes when you visit here.
There's a cafe outside the cave that sells delicious gelato ice cream and the best coffee I've ever had in my life.

A somewhat quirky spot for a foreign tourist, but glad I discovered this place on the drive back from Nikko. There is ample free parking and a short walk will take you to the cave entrance. Upon entry, there is a small museum with artifacts from when the cave was constructed. The real attraction however begins when you descend a staircase into the cool depths of the old quarry. Neutral and coloured lighting creates a mysterious scene, illuminating the scarred walls and exhibits scattered about. I ended up spending a decent amount of time here, exploring each nook and cranny as I went. Upon exit there is a shop and restaurant where you can buy Oya stone keepsakes, the very material which was mined from within. Definitely worth a look if passing by.

It takes approximately 32 minutes to reach the awe-inspiring Oya History Museum (大谷資料館, Ōya Shiryōkan) from Utsunomiya. Situated in the picturesque Tochigi prefecture, this remarkable museum is ingeniously nestled within an expansive, abandoned stone quarry. The sheer craftsmanship and ingenuity displayed within this man-made marvel are nothing short of extraordinary, leaving visitors in a state of awe and disbelief. Exploring the museum's intricate stone formations and learning about its fascinating history is an experience that truly defies imagination!

It’s the massive underground network of caverns with more than 20,000 square meters of open space. Its scale is equivalent to Metropolitan Area Outer Waterway in Saitama, which is another place I would recommend. For 800 yen it’s very much worth visiting as it will give you an one of a kind experience you can’t handle elsewhere.

A very large stone quarry of Oya stone, which is considered quite famous in Japan and is used in many important buildings around the country.

This place is super unique. It’s basically a walk-through cave where they used to mine stones used in building, and it kind of looks like something out of a sci-fi movie. It’s underground, so it feels nice and cool during the hot summer. :) It’s also a short walk to some other cool historical areas such as the giant Buddha statue.

We Bsoluyely love visiting this quarry. It's about 50 deg F inside the quarry. The massive space and its history is a reflection of japanese craftsmanship. We highly recommend this place, especially in the summer.

Utsunomiya Futaarayama Shrine, a renowned Shinto shrine located in the heart of Utsunomiya city, is easily accessible from the train station and boasts an impressive long staircase and torii gate. This storied complex is particularly famous for hosting the Rei-sai thanksgiving festival every October. Visitors can enjoy some local snacks at nearby food stalls and take a pleasant walk to Utsunomiya Castle.
The arch of the Shintoism's shrine is too large structure on the side of road in city. Even events happen here, like Kekkon(marriage) or any special occasion. It has many structures of deities, and red colored Tori gates take through them from outer world to the inner spiritual world. I love this big shrine here, the customs locals do here in a que is not faded here unlike other city places. One must experience this through a visit and following the things that are prescribed earlier.

Urban oasis in the heart of Utsunomiya. Like many shrines in Japanese cities, it's perched on top of a hill and can be reached by climbing a steep stair. There is no lift or escalator of any kind unlike in some downtown shrines elsewhere, so some cautions are needed. One can see down towards the bustling downtown and preserved Utsunomiya Castle some hundred of meters away.

I went to explore since I was in Utsunomiya. It was a nice place but there was so many stairs that I was already tired half way up. Though I was lugging a bunch of camera gear and was tired from traveling. I don’t know much of the history behind this place but known as Omyojin-sama or Futaara-san. With three deities Toyoki-Irihiko-no-Mikoto, Omononushi-no-Mikoto, and Kotoshironushi-no-Mikoto being worshipped.

I visited Utsunomiya Futaarayma Shrine in March and it was really nice! I came from Nikko by train and the Shrine was close to the Utsunomiya train station and easy to find. Also if you are visiting Nikko from Tokyo by train and you have to stop in Utsunomiya I would recommend you to see the Shrine!

Even in Utsunomiya, the area around Teikyo University is unexplored. Moreover, museums are places far away from me.
The other day, I went to the Utsunomiya Museum of Art to explore, and there was an interesting-looking exhibition on for a limited time.
Due to its popularity, reservations are required on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, which can be a bit of a hassle. I made time for paid visits on weekdays.
It's mid-weekday morning, but it's already very crowded. I'm a picture book author and I like the atmosphere. Rather than an exhibition of paintings, you can see the inspiration points, production process, and daily notes in the creative notebook.
We also looked at the permanent exhibits and enjoyed them for two hours.
When I was selling products, I wanted a lot of things and ended up spending money.
I thought it was lunch at restaurant 8010, but there was a wait, so I'll save it for next time.
It was a good use of my time!

It's an OK zoo. I really dislike the condition of the elephant, pigs, and some other animals.
I believe that if there isn't enough space for the animals to move around then they don't belong at the zoo. This zoo doesn't have enough space for some animals and so they look depressed and are very unhappy. They even look a little sick from my perspective.
I've been there twice. I went a second time because I wanted my infant son to see animals. I won't go back there to see animals. Maybe next time, just for amusement.
The changing areas for babies are not sanitary enough. The facilities look very old and dirty.

I had good interaction with some animals (feeding the sheep, giraffes, lama) but I was expecting something better given the price of the ticket 😐 the park is small and you can finish everything within an hour. The "Don't touch the animal"sign is almost everywhere which feels like you're in a pet shop rather than a zoo🙄 besides, lots of animals were sleeping in their cages and didn't show any reaction to the visitors for the whole day. The entrance ticket doesn't cover the attraction fee. Can be enjoyed by families, couples, but for me it's worth going once only. It's recommended to bring something to eat with you beforehand because there are not so many options in the cafeterias inside the park. I enjoyed the melon latte and the dog show (kind off)

Nice place to visit, especially during hanami (cherry blossom viewing) when the whole park is covered in pink flowers. You can visit Utsunomiya Tower, stroll in the park, visit the small animal park (near the entrance) and go over the blu bridge to a play and adventure area (with go carts).

Is the town of Utsunomiya so deserted that I wish it would develop? I thought it was the same as always. I wish it had changed a little.
It's really a shame because SNS is so amazing. I went to Tochigi for the first time in a while and decided to call a taxi.
Even though it was still around 9:00 pm, I was refused at two places and there was no last bus!
When I finally got into a taxi that was taking a break, I couldn't even use PayPay. It's really too inconvenient. It will be difficult for people who don't have a car or the elderly.
Even in Utsunomiya city, the last bus is at 9 o'clock. There are other prefectures and regions that are rapidly developing, but nothing has changed...
Why is the town still the same after 20 years?

Its an absolutely beautiful park. There are many parks in Utsunomiya however I find this one to be one of the best and most accessible for all. There is a playground for children here, there is a pretty large lake for a park that is well maintained. Year round you can see many beautiful koi fish and many species of birds. There is a museum. There is a lot of space to have picknics and even spots where you can get close to nature and also histroy.

It's essentially a remnant of a feudal castle that is repurposed as a park, which is unique. Typically, Japanese cities and towns just simply let their castle ruins (those that didn't survive intact through the post-feudal and World War 2 eras) to rot. Here, instead of fully restoring the castle or raze it, they preserved the moat, enclosure walls, and guard towers as they are. The inner part of the castle, which is now an empty ground, becomes a public space, where the locals do sports and other recreational activities, and occasionally local festivals.
Surprisingly, elevators were installed to access the wall rampart. The guard towers also house some artifacts of the feudal era, but by the time of my visit, it was off limits and not in display for public.

The mall offers various options for shopping including clothes, drinks, foods, and fashion. Utsunomiya station is the place to be if you're looking for discounts on your purchases. In addition to its excellent food, the old-fashioned eatery also provides an option for Halal Gyoza on the menu, catering to diverse dietary preferences.
Great gyoza restaurant. They don’t only cook gyoza, but let you cook them as an activity. They make the filling and explain you how to wrap the gyoza, and after that they cook them in different styles: boiled, pan-fried, deep-fried, etc. They even serve sweet gyoza with fruit filling. Great place for group activities, friendly staff and cozy and relaxing atmosphere. They have vegetarian options as well.
