The Kirishima-Jingu Shrine, situated amidst a dense forest in Kagoshima City, is a traditional Shinto shrine with stunning lacquered columns and architecture. During autumn, the shrine offers breathtaking views of nature's beauty combined with a refreshing chill due to its mountain location. Despite its popularity among visitors who queue up outside the temple gates, the atmosphere within is quiet and peaceful.
Kirishima Shrine is located in Kagoshima City.
Now It's autumn so it's very beautiful and a bit cold because the temple is on the mountain. The space is quiet and the people visiting the temple are very crowded. They lined up from the temple gate.

The place is not big, if you are not praying or worshiping, it won’t take long to just look around. Like most temples, it looks solemn and quiet. The landscape and surroundings are well maintained.

Beautiful place. I liked the crescendo : the more you progress, the more everything around you gets beautiful.
I don't want to spoil the pleasure for anyone, so I won't say much more. Just look around.
Just a suggestion: After crossing the bridge, instead of going up the stairs, you could take a left, and then a right to the stairs that lead to Kame Ishi. Then you could go directly to Yama Shrine (left), which is worth a detour, and only then stroll to the main temple. Without missing the beautiful, moss-covered, fountain on the way.

It is quiet place and not many people were there. Need to climb up a flight of steps but vehicles could drive up to near the temple. At the foot of the hill, there were shops and some snack, ramen shops.

This shrine is absolutely stunning! It’s designated as a National Treasure and pays tribute to Ninigi, the grandson of the sun goddess Amaterasu and the progenitor of the Imperial Family. It is also called the “Nikko of the West” because of its beautiful vermillion buildings and carvings. I could really feel the spiritual energy of this place (it is one of Japan’s “power spots”). If you’re into Japanese history and nature, you absolutely can’t miss it!

Live up to its name of one of the top mystic shrine in Kyushu. Came on gloomy morning and was blown away by Kirishima Shrine. Kirishima as the name implies translate to Fog engulf shrine. The place feels so surreal and mystic with the fog covering the shrine. Lots of nature trails as well. To reach Kirishima Shrine from Kagoshima, simply take the shinkasen to Kirishima Jingu Mae, then take a local bus to the shrine. Do take note that the bus takes cash ¥290.

When I come to Kagoshima, I go to Kirishima Shrine. Being that it had been a very long time, I drew my fortune. The result was a great fortune.

Roadside station Kirishima is a rest stop situated on a toll road, offering a variety of services to travelers. The station provides an opportunity to take a break and refresh oneself during long journeys. It offers amenities such as restaurants, souvenir shops, and restrooms. One can also enjoy the scenic beauty of the surrounding hills from this resting spot.
Small park with train riding and gliding experience. Suggest to spend around 1 hour here to take all the rides, as the gliding is quite fun to play with. The place is good for taking photos too as it's located on the mountain with a nice view.

Onamino Pond is a scenic crater lake surrounded by dense forests and accessible via a wooden path. The lake sits at an altitude of 4,065 ft. Visitors can complete a leisurely walk around the pond in approximately an hour and a half, though there are some ups and downs on the way. Appropriate footwear such as sneakers is recommended for this activity. However, it should be noted that currently the toilet facility at the trailhead is not available due to pump failure.
A small and short hike to the top. On the top there is a small little resting hut which has some information signs on the inside which explain a bit about the history and myth of the pond.

Kagoshima Shrine, a Shinto sanctuary, is built to honor an imperial ancestral deity and is also connected with safe childbirth. While it may not offer much in terms of entertainment, there are rows of Torii gates located behind the shrine that lead you to Inari Shrine which can be intriguing. The shrine hosts an annual event on February 24th which includes horse parades accompanied by music and dance.
Located in the countryside, Kagoshima shrine can be reached by foot (20 min from the train station) or by car. It might not seem very convenient, but I think that's totally worth your walking time : the main torii gate, huge, will be waiting for you on the middle of the road and will probably leave you speechless :)
As for the rest, well, this shrine is very promising and you should definitely go there if you can ! The entrance is located in town, but the city will slowly fade away as you enter Kagoshima shrine. There, you will be surrounded by huge trees, ancient stones, ponds and silence. If you take youre time, enjoy nature and want to see every single area, I think you can easily stay for at least one hour. I didn't expect that at all when I first came here, and this shrine is still one of my favourite !
If you can, you should go there at the end of February, since an old traditional matsuri (the hatsu uma) is celebrated there.

The aviation exhibition room is located on the south side of the observation deck on the 3rd floor of Kagoshima Airport.
The exhibits are easy to understand and enjoy, from the history of Kagoshima Airport to the mechanics of airplanes. The exhibits are also rich in content, including actual tires, engine fan blades, winglets, and a training cabin mockup (actually used in training). There is also a chronology showing the history of airplanes, as well as many models of famous airplanes from around the world (commercial planes are painted in the colors of the airlines they fly into).
There are also two types of stationary simulators that you can experience, and in keeping with the concept that everyone can enjoy it, there are also ways to keep visitors from getting bored.
There were old airport seats and a flap-type information board with a flapping sound, so I was able to sit comfortably and feel nostalgic while taking a break from my early morning visit.

An exhibition space attached to Kagoshima Airport related to aircraft and their history.
First, let me write the conclusion, but I would definitely say that this is an extremely high-quality exhibit that you should stop by even if you are not bringing children with you if you have any interest in aircraft.
It's so amazing that it's hard to believe that this is free.
When you enter from the inside of the airport, you first pass through the miniature aircraft exhibition space, which is amazing.
Numerous miniatures and explanations written on the walls explain the history of aircraft, prospects for the future, and introductions to the passenger planes of each airline.
If you read it properly, it looks like it will take about an hour just here.
The exhibition space ahead is also impressive, and in the middle is a fan blade from a turbojet engine provided by ANA.
This is the real thing that was removed from the actual machine.
The materials explaining what this is all about are very easy to understand and can be studied not only by children but also by adults.
The fuselage of a JAL plane placed in the back is probably a mock aircraft for training cabin attendants. There are very few opportunities to go inside, so it's a valuable experience.
There is a flight simulator for kids, so your kids will have fun too.
And finally, the performance involves passing through the nose cowl of a 747-300 provided by JAL and exiting to the Kagoshima Airport Observation Deck.
You can feel the enthusiasm of the person in charge.

There were 5 or 6 staff members there, but it looked like the group was going out to eat and had no hands on their hands, but they didn't seem to be able to help, so I asked the cashier, ``Do you have Kirishima Nature? I was able to sample it. Is it too weak at 1% alcohol? That's what I thought, but apparently the alcohol content increases to about 8% within a month of the expiration date. When I tried it, it was about 2% and tasted like slightly carbonated amazake, so I immediately bought it.
When I drank it 3 days after purchasing it, the taste changed a little and it was so delicious that I almost drank it all right away, but I would like to continue drinking while enjoying the change in taste over the course of a month.
I bought some salt koji cream puffs because the reviews said it was delicious, and the salt koji had a slight kick to it and it was delicious! !
I'm satisfied that I was able to purchase the alcohol I wanted, but the customer service from the staff was not good enough, and I personally disliked the customer service of the male staff, so I'm cutting back ⭐🙇♀️

The bed mattresses and duvets are carefully selected to improve the quality of your sleep, and the bath towels are made by Asano Tsuiri from Gifu Prefecture, who also appeared in Gaiya no Yoake.
I'm also particular about the lighting in the room.

Kagoshima Airport, located in the city of Kirishima, Kagoshima Prefecture, serves Southern Kyushu and offers unique amenities such as a hot-spring foot bath and aircraft displays. The airport operates several flights per day to destinations like Amami Airport on Amami Oshima, Tokunoshima Airport on Tokunoshima Island, and Kikai Airport on Kikaijima Island.
The airport has a free foot-bath in front. You can get a souvenir towel for ¥200. It's a great way to relax after your flight. Busses to Kagoshima Chuo Station leave from there about every 20 minutes (¥1,200 for adults).
Paul Scott — Google review
The airport was not a large one, but it also served international flights. Most of the shops and restaurants were in the local flight side, which was connected by a covered walkway. A free open foot hot bathing area decorated with a volcano was its signature. Carpark was always full and needed to spare some time to queue up. Entering the carpark was not constantly guided by staff, and drivers had to follow the sequence themselves. Along the main building, stops were allocated to private cars, buses, etc. But drivers also needed to wait because the stops were busy. The quality of the shops and eateries was fine. Some residents were attracted and spent here. The staff in the information counter could speak fluent English. Tourists should approach them for assistance instead of other staff working here because they might not answer your questions correctly. The custom for international flight was on the upper level. The entrance was usually crowded with a long queue as there was only a small buffering space for checking hand carried luggage before stepping into the restricted area. Only one shop was opened inside. Battery charging was provided free of charge. Toilets were clean and hygiene.

The Departure hall of the International Airport KOJ seems to be way smaller than that of the Arrival. That said, there is a newly opened restaurant (opened in Nov 2019) that provides yummy meals at reasonable prices.

Kagoshima airport is not a busy airport for international line. You can get to there by bus. Not many shops in the international departure hall. You’d better prepared your snacks. Or you can explore the domestic terminal for meals.

The Wake Shrine is a traditional Shinto place of worship located in the southern region. It features a grand red torii gate and picturesque displays of wisteria, which bloom during late April to the first week of May. The shrine also holds the Fuji Festival during this time, offering visitors a chance to see local markets and performances by kumen-daiko drummers on weekends. Additionally, the shrine's beauty is enhanced by night lighting on weekends.

Shiroyama Park in Kagoshima is a picturesque mountain park featuring a viewing deck that offers breathtaking vistas of sunrises, the city, and Sakurajima volcano. The park holds historical significance as it was the site of the Satsuma Rebellion in 1887, with Saigo Cave linked to local resident Saigo Takamori's last stand during the rebellion.

Large statue of Saigo Takamori. Liked the free admission and accessibility from the airport. It's something interesting to see if you've for a few hours layover in Kagoshima.

Really great experience, the volunteer who was there on the 4/1/24 was very enthusiastic and kind towards us and my son and super helpful. Thank you so much! You can wear a kimono for free. Edo period house and garden, my son was able to feed the koi! We also used the footbath which is free! We didn't eat there though there is a restaurant.
Definitely worth the visit, the store has a lot of great local foods and souvenirs.

A small but nice place for a quick visit. Hot-spring foot bath is available for free.

Great home-made soft ice cream and local food market set in a re-created Edo courtyard with footbath, Japanese garden and samurai house. Incredibly, it’s all free ( except for the ice cream of course 😄)
The staff seem to be genuinely happy to be working here and frankly more helpful than the official tourist employees you’ll find at the onsen locations.
Highly recommended for a quick, fun, no-stress visit!
They also had an area where you could try on the same outfit that was worn by the famous Japanese hero Sakamoto Ryouma. Great fun!

Uenohara Jomon no Mori is a peaceful recreational area that boasts an archaeological museum and allows visitors to wander through restored dwellings from the Jōmon era. The park offers a serene atmosphere where one can learn about Japan's ancient history and explore the exhibits on display within the museum. The park's main attraction is its restored Jōmon-era structures, which provide insight into how people lived during this period.
Hmm did i just take the wrong route? nope! Great Museum in the middle of nowhere. We were not sure if to go there, just a few signs showed the way to a road that normally would lead to nowhere. But then a huge museum with lovely detailed exhibition pieces of an japanese Jomon(B.C.) settlement in this area. Even if its not in english, its worth going there. The staff was also very kind and you can produce your own Jomon stuff with your kids! Go there, you will love it.

A pretty interesting museum which shows the site of an 9.5 thousand year old civilization. Costs 320 yen to enter the museum but outside area which is probably more interesting is free. Great place for picnic and some English information is scattered throughout the site

Great little museum, that I spent about 2 hours at. The special exhibition and 20 minute movie are all in Japanese but they have made a great effort to translate the main exhibition into English (but you do need a smartphone to see it). I would really recommend watching some of the videos of Jomon cooking which are a bit of a parody of all the Japanese cooking shows.
They have also managed to contextualise the Jomon time period giving me a great sense of when it was all happening, which I feel sometimes gets lost in museums.
Once you're done looking at the inside, you still have all the reproductions of the buildings to look around outside and preserved areas of the excavation.
Definitely worth a visit!

Extremely interesting site and museum concerning the stone age culture of southern Kyushu and the Jomon period in Japan in general. Houses of several cultural periods have been rebuilt, especially focusing on the large settlement found here from 9500 years ago. This is one of the, if not the, largest settlement discovered from the Jomon period in Japan. The museum is very interesting and impressive, and provides an in-depth guide accessible by smart phone.
To get here from Kagoshima we took a local train to Kirishima center, and then taxi. It is definitely worth the trip.

It's a good place to study, and there's a large place to play, so it's suitable for small children. If you go too far, you may get lost, so be careful.
I was hooked because I could make all kinds of things in the experience area.
