Tatehana Wharf Morning Market is a seasonal farmers' market in Japan that offers an array of locally grown seafood and produce, as well as various food stalls. The market opens at sunrise and runs until 9, providing good prices and delicious foods. Although it primarily focuses on raw ingredients and cooked foods, it offers unique experiences for visitors to see and understand the local products offered by homegrown or business vendors.
Exactly as advertised: market that opens at sunrise and goes until 9.
Prices are good, food is good. There's not much besides produce/raw ingredients/cooked food though, in case you're hoping it's more like a flea market or something.
You can catch the unofficial mascot around too

This is a must to do if you're in Japan. What a great mix! Locals come out with here home grown or business products. Amazing experiences to see and understand with they have to offer but the food stalls was absolutely fabulous.

I loveeer morning markets. This market only opens on Sundays from 3-9am so you’d better wake up early, and it doesn’t open in winter. The local produces here are fresh, and you can find good seafood, apples, etc. here. We came here for the food though, they are good with reasonable prices for local people. I would recommend the grilled seafood, hot rice sake, senbei-jiru, and the dumplings!

The morning market, which is Hachinohe’s largest one, is held on every Sunday at Tatehana Wharf. It is also said to be the largest morning market in Japan.
I went there in April 2016 with my younger sister and her husband. My older sister who was married to a Japanese and stay in Hachinohe brought us to this Sunday morning market.
Later in May 2019, my sister brought my colleagues and I there. My colleagues like the place so much, it was a wonderful experience with at least 300 to 400 stalls there and it is getting lively with thousand of visitors to enjoy shopping.
It is also a fishing port and is usually calm with the ships lying at anchor before leaving.
Visitors can find various kinds of things, such as fresh and cooked marine products, local vegetables at reasonable price and foods such as Takikomi-gohan [rice dish cooked with various ingredients and flavored with soy sauce] or Udon.

From what I found, it's actually Japan's largest morning market. And it is, this market is truly massive.
It happens every Sunday, starting off in the early morning and wrapping up around 9 am.
It's the perfect place to try North Japanese street seafood at fair prices.

Japan's largest morning market.
Indeed the place is packed with food stalls as far as the eye can see in several directions. The variety and number of stalls are a big plus.
The train lines were closed for works when we visited which made accessing the area very difficult. We had to get a taxi to do so.
In order to get the most out of the market you'd need to visit at silly-o-clock in the morning, otherwise by time you get there most of the food will have been sitting waiting for a while and will be cold by time you get it.
There was a really popular chicken stall in particular that would have been amazing, if not for the fact the chicken was cold by time we got it. Likewise at a yakitori stand the skewers were cold. At another stand we saw the owners cough into their hands and continue cooking too, so take caution with what you buy.
I'd recommend only getting products that are either freshly made on the spot, have only just been cooked, or otherwise don't need to be eaten immediately (such as bread, mochi, etc.).
For the effort it took to arrange to be here on the one day of the week they open and actually access the place itself, it largely wasn't worth it.

Amazing 5AM morning market. My first time going to such a market. There was all kind of food. Prices were very reasonable. Little to no tourist which was a bonus.
If you’re passing by, the market is well worth a visit.
Upon arrival at Pansion Benkei Hotel, the author and their sister embarked on a drive to Tanesashi Coast to admire its Pacific Ocean coastline. The author recalls visiting this location in May 2016 with their sibling and spouse, where they witnessed strong winds and raging waves. The group ascended the Ashigezaki Observatory, previously utilized as a military watchtower, which offered stunning views of the Tanesashi coastal region and the vast Pacific.

The Hasshoku Center is a popular market that offers a variety of local seafood, produce, and groceries. It boasts two restaurant areas, which draw in locals regularly. One of the standout features of this market is its huge wet fresh fish section where customers can rent charcoal grills to cook their purchases for up to two hours. While some vendors will prepare the fish for grilling, most require customers to request it beforehand. The other side of the market provides sauces and seasoning options if needed.
Truly one of the most comprehensive fish market I have visited in Japan. Much bigger than Kushiro fish market with more variety. Prices are not too touristy as well. Definitely worth the detour into Hachinohae just for a meal here.

Drove here weekday lunch hour. Not very crowded. Mostly locals around. We visited the BBQ place (shichirin mura) first to pay for a seat. We were given a green basket to put our purchased seafood around the market. 2 hour long eating/cooking period. Tongs, paper plates, salt&pepper shaker and chopsticks were provided. It was a little intimidating to buy the seafood because we had no idea what we were buying, except the obvious ones like shrimp and squid.
We spent about 5000 yen for around 10 shrimps, a platter of squid, 2 oysters, 2 scallops, some sort of fish. You can also purchase beer, drinks and rice at the counter. Very fun experience.
There are a few other japanese restaurants in the centre. As well as a dry market area selling general goods, souvenirs and toys. Toilets are extremely clean.

A huge wet fresh fish market. There's a cool twist to this one. You can rent a charcoal grill for 2 hours and cook whatever you buy. It's a little intimidating, most people get the grill then but fish but I recommend you buy some fish first.
Some vendors cut and prepare fish for the grill already but most do not. You need to tell them you'll be grilling it and they will prepare whatever you buy. You can also get sauces and seasoning from the other side of the market if you want. Things get very smokey in there very quickly.

We went here on Wednesday when the main market was closed. We had the conveyor belt sushi which was awesome. Totally worth it. We came back the following day to look through the rest of the market. We had takoyaki, okonomiyaki, onigiri and mochi. It was an awesome experience. All the food is yummy. Lots of options to try and eat. There are restaurants and food court. Lots of places to sit. One of the places to sit had a cold water fountain. The seafood experience would be amazing. There is a barbecue area that we did not get to experience but would be awesome. We are staying downtown and were able to use the 200 yen hassoku shuttle. If you eat, you need to go here. My best advice is make sure you are hungry when you go.
Kabushima Shrine is a picturesque Buddhist shrine dedicated to the goddess Benzaiten, located on an island in Tanesashi Coast. The shrine was unfortunately burnt down in 2015, but has since been reconstructed and restored to its former beauty. The island is home to thousands of black-tailed gulls, making it a unique and memorable experience for visitors. Although the temple could not be visited during the reconstruction process, it can now be enjoyed by all who visit.
Good scenery, nice place, and lots of seagulls. It was little windy, I would recommend warm wind resistant clothes, espically gloves, during the winter months. They kept my hands and body warm and I was able to take some good photos! There is a shrine shop at the top that sells some very nice merchandise.

This shrine was certainly an experience like never before! We visited in early May, when the nanoha flowers were in bloom and the seagulls were nesting. There are SO many seagulls, which I thought was really fun to see. Its probably worth bringing an umbrella if you want to make sure you stay clean, but we were able to make it out unscathed. The view of the ocean is really nice, and the seasonal goshuin stamps are beautiful too!

Wow! What a sight. Grand display along this charming coastal line.
The main attraction here is the dozens and dozens of seagulls that flock and nest here. However when I visited there was nothing but a peep! Maybe the birds were off on a holiday that day :)
But if you're looking for a marvelous sight, this is worth a day trip out to see. Beautiful quiet sea In the distance as you get to the top of this shrine. The waves crashing in the distance feel gentle. And the ocean breeze causing the tall plans to sway like sea plants, is charming in itself.

Beautiful shrine at a nice location!
I visited this beautiful Kabushima shrine on an island, inhabited by black tailed seagulls on 11 August 2020 during my summer vacations with my Japanese friend. I loved the beauty and surroundings so much that I visited again by using train from hon-Hachinohe at 11:55 am to same station and then 15-20 min walk upto Kabushima shrine. I highly recommended to visit this beautiful shrine to anyone whoever visits Hachinohe or Aomori prefecture.
The Kabushima shrine is a picturesque shrine located on a small hill surrounded by the sea. It is believed that the shrine enshrines goddess Benzaiten and for centuries local fishermen and townspeople have come to the shrine to pray for good luck business, fishing, and more.
Access:
By Car: 30 min from Hachinohe Station, 20 min from downtown, 25 min from the Hachinohe
By Train: 15 min walk from the Same Station
By Bus: Get off at the「Kabushima Kaihin Koen」on the Umineko Bus

YOU WILL HEAR SWEET MELODY OF BLACK TAILED GULLS!!!!
Leaving the JR Hachinohe Line’s Same Station and walking along the seashore, you’ll hear a squawking sound as a small island, linked to the land by a road, comes into view. This is Kabushima Island, designated a National Natural Monument as a breeding ground for black-tailed gulls. Every year black-tailed gulls come here to raise their chicks from March until about August. The island is packed with birds, said to number between thirty and forty thousand.
The black-tailed gulls have been important to Hachinohe since ancient times as they indicate the location of fishing grounds. They are associated with the goddess Benzaiten, who is worshipped at Kabushima Shrine. The birds are unafraid of people, allowing close observation. While you’re having fun with them, it might also amuse you to imagine the lives of fishermen in the old days.
Highly recommended
Cheers

Normally, Kabushima Shrine is famous for attracting a lot of black-tailed gull.
However, in August 2023, they are not there probably because of the heat.
I made it to the shrine without an umbrella instead of that. It means poo didn't fall from the sky.
This shrine itself doesn't have much character except them.

Very cool Shinto shrine in a rock looking out over the port of Hachinohe. On a fine but blustery January day, the wind chill felt like -10⁰. Fortunately they were serving hot amazake at the top. We prayed, picked up a goshuin, and had some Amazake.
What the guide books don't really show though is that the view back to the city is very industrial. In fact, petrochemical, which is not inspiring. Half an hour drive from Shinkansen station.

The shrine provides umbrellas to visitors for good reason and you better use them before you walk around under the flying seagulls! ・This is a turnip object displayed in the shrine building. I hear that there are many people who come here to pray for better financial luck, such as rising turnips and rising stock prices.
・This is the shrine building. Since it was still a little early in the morning, the attached awarding office was preparing to open soon.
・The shrine building, which was rebuilt after a fire, is sparkling clean. From now on, the texture will increase with the sea breeze and black-tailed black-tailed feces. I also wanted to see the old shrine building.
・The shrine plaque and bell are shiny.
・It is said that if you walk around the shrine three times before visiting the shrine, you will have even better luck. Even more beautiful than that is the Japanese flag waving in the blue sky...
・After visiting the shrine, I received a goshuin stamp at the awarding office. There seem to be two types of goshuin, and this is the one that says "Kabushima Shrine." This stamp has an atmosphere of an illustration of a black-tailed gull and a shrine building.
・This is the second type of Goshuin. This is a company seal in the shape of a turnip with Benzaiten written in the center.
・The first fruits fee was listed as 500 yen for one type and 800 yen for two types.
・Kabushima Shrine has been introduced as one of Hachinohe City's representative shrines. It's not because of the size of the shrine building or the size of the precincts, but because it matches the scenery so well. It is one of the shrines that gives you a Japanese feel of the sky, sea, and black-tailed gulls.

The shrine is located facing the sea and is celebrated as the 100th anniversary of the breeding ground for black-tailed black-tailed black-tailed black-tailed black-tailed cats.
Probably because it was not the season, there were only a few black-tailed gulls flying around.
If you visit during breeding season, you might be able to see cute baby black-tailed gulls.
It is said that if you go around the shrine three times, you will be happy.
There were stone statues of the Seven Lucky Gods and zodiac signs dotted around the promenade, and it was fun to look at them and look for your zodiac sign.

A shrine built in the middle of a breeding ground for sea cats. So it's tough being surrounded by sea cats. There is an umbrella next to the torii gate, so be sure to bring an umbrella with you when you visit. Otherwise, Umineko's shit attack will destroy you. It's a bastard attack, but it's a blessing because it's Umineko, Lord Benzaiten's errand.

(Translated by Google) It was based on Kokuzodo, where the second lord of the Hachinohe domain, Naomasa Nanbu, enshrined the founder of the Kai Nanbu clan, Minamoto no Yoshimitsu, Saburo Shinra. It was revered as the Okunan guardian deity of the Hachinohe domain, and in 1827, the 8th lord of the domain, Nobuma, built Sakurababa, where the existing shrine and cavalry ball are dedicated. During the Meiji era, when the ordinance was passed to separate Shinto and Buddhism, it was renamed Shilla Shrine. Not only is it one of the three shrines of the Hachinohe Sansha Taisai Festival, but the Chunichi Kagami-ryu Kiba Uchimari is a valuable piece of cultural value as the only one in Japan. It also occupies an important position in Hachinohe's festivals, with each Enburi group competing for the turn to make an offering to the shrine at the beginning of the winter festival, Enburi.
Although the precincts are close to the downtown area, it maintains a quiet atmosphere amidst the dense trees.

I was able to observe the dedication of the Kagami-style cavalry ball at the shrine grounds. It is a competition in which horseback warriors, divided into two groups, red and white, scoop up a ball with a pole with a net on the tip and throw it into a goal gate. This is an event where you can feel the tradition of running a ranch and raising Nanbu-koma since the Heian period. It is said that cavalry ball was started in 1827, in the 10th year of the Bunsei era, when Nobumasa Nanbu, the 8th feudal lord, rebuilt the shrine building and opened the Sakura no Baba.
Shinra Shrine was founded in 1678, 6th year of the Enpo era, when Nambu Naomasa, the second lord of the domain, prayed for the distant ancestor of the Nambu clan, Silla Saburo Yoshimitsu (Minamoto no Yoshimitsu), and named it Sanshado and Kokuzodo. The Ashigezaki tenbōdai Observatory is a historical military fort with stunning panoramic sea views. It is located on a beautiful coastline, with walking paths that showcase wildflowers and pine trees growing by the ocean. The area offers easy, cultivated walking trails alongside the coast road where visitors can breathe fresh air and observe various greenery on both sides of the path.

Very very beautiful coast line! Does not look like Japan at all. I felt like I am in the middle of the ocean on a volcanic island!
If you love ocean, you must go there.
There are also coast line trails (kind of hiking), and one very cultivated coast line road where one can enjoy easy walking while breathing fresh air and observing ocean and various flowers and greenery on both sides of the road. There are also pine trees growing just by the ocean!
Further there is a large sand beach (no swimming though, except a small area close to the village). Locals surf here sometimes.
Sometimes the fog can come out of nowhere and pretty fast, so be careful, but it creates unprecedented atmosphere!

Not worth a visit at all unless you are with Japanese friends who can get you into these places.
Most of the restaurants in the area are really small, and will get packed out immediately with regular customers who the owners all give priority to. Most of them allow smoking as well, which if you're a non-smoker is very unpleasant.
The three or four places that clearly had seats available all rejected us, saying that they were already reserved. I'm pretty sure you can't make reservations at these locations, so I doubt this was the case. I think they just weren't interested in serving foreigners at all, and this was the easiest way to reject us without saying so.
The area is kind of sold as a fun bar-hopping spot, but in reality you'll be lucky to get into any single place if you're a foreigner. Don't bother.

Children's World is a delightful amusement park that offers traditional rides, an indoor playground and a zoo. Visitors can also enjoy dining at the park's eateries. The park features a giant statue of Jomon which is quite impressive and there are monkeys at the entrance to entertain visitors. The Ferris wheel offers stunning views of the surroundings. This small yet entertaining amusement park is perfect for spending a few hours with children.
Located inside a park. Small amusement park perfect for young children. Carousel, trains, water ride, sky-cycling track, smallish roller coaster, ferris wheel etc. Cheap tickets. 110 yen per ticket, majority of rides cost 1 ticket for children and 2 tickets for adults. There were some food stores around but most were closed while we were there (weekday 2pm). Drink and ice cream vending machines available. Hardly any crowd, we spent 2 hours here but could definitely spend more if my kid wasnt feeling grumpy. Lovely place for a picnic. Weather in early July was sunny at 26 degrees with a cool breeze.

Small amusement park for children! Bring some yen to buy tickets at the park, we spent ¥2000 to get about 10 tickets. My kid loved riding the airplane ride. Great for introducing kids to rides. Best times to go are April-September. It’s beautiful in the spring with all the cherry blossom trees blooming. They also hold some festivals during that time and sell Japanese festival foods !

Great small amusement park. I would recommend bring your own food and drinks. But the park is good to take the kids for a few hours of fun.

I really enjoyed this little amusement park. We went during the week and practically had the place to ourselves. There is monkeys at the entrance and definitely enough to do for a few hours! Great views from the Ferris wheel too! Make sure to have yen for the tickets.

😃 Here's a fun little spot to enjoy with kids or on a date. Don't expect a full blown amusement park as it's not quite that big but there's enough for a couple hours of stuff.
😑 The rides are short but not too expensive especially considering it's Japan. This place features swings, toy jet planes, a merry go round, ferris wheel, 🎢 roller coaster, go karts (slow) and a few more things.
🏞️ There are also a few parks and other things to explore outside of the amusement park side which makes coming to this location worth it.
The park also has food and some decent photo opportunities. Lots of employees to help you too. I thought this place might be closed because of COVID but they still remain open with some anti COVID measures for safety.

A big, beautiful park with a little amusement park on the grounds. The cherry blossoms are lovely in the spring. There are also several zoo displays, though the animals don’t have a lot of room to move around. Still, plenty to keep a family busy for an afternoon.

I visited this park in November and in the afternoon. The giant statue of Jomon is impressive. The roses have a unique fragrance. Some people were having fun and the rain started but the monkeys continued to play.

I thought it wouldn't be a big deal considering the price, but it turned out to be quite good. It was interesting to learn about items from the Jomon period, the history of Hachinohe, and life in the early Showa period. The scenery at the rest area was also nice and I was able to get lost in a daze.

From Motohachinohe Station, after visiting Horeizanku Shrine and Chojayama Shinra Shrine, it takes about 7 minutes by bus from downtown Hachinohe.
The archeology, history, and folklore of Hachinohe are on display.
In September of the previous year, I visited the historical sites of Shiba, Tokutan, Isawa, and Taga Castle, as well as the Tohoku Museum of History. From the perspective of the Yamato Imperial Court, it was Ezo, but together with the Sannai Maruyama ruins, which I visited the next day, I visited the prehistoric and Jomon period. , villages were formed, and we once again realized that there is no division among the ethnic groups living in the Japanese archipelago.
There was also an exhibit in one corner of the story of the Great Tohoku Earthquake, where I was able to learn about the situation at the time.

(Translated by Google) It is a history museum adjacent to the castle ruins, and although there is an equestrian statue of Nambu Moriyuki, who built the castle during the Nanbokucho period, in front of the museum, it does not particularly delve into the period of the prince, and to put it simply, it is comprehensive. Frankly speaking, the content of the exhibition is superficial. It may be good for elementary and junior high school students to learn about local history, but it feels lacking for adults to enjoy. Even though there are other historical museums in Hachinohe City, the Korekawa Jomon Museum has a narrower theme and is much more worth seeing.
The facility is clean and the exhibits are well-organized, so if you still have time to see the castle, or if the weather is not good and you don't think you'll enjoy walking around outside, go for it.

If it's sunny, the view may be the best.
The lighthouse was white and beautiful.
Next door is what looks like an apartment complex that is no longer in use, giving it a desolate feel.

Although it is a small lighthouse, it is located on a hill and has a great view, which is why it is a good place to come.
It's about a 5 minute walk from the parking lot. It's flat.

It is one of the best viewing spots on the Tanegawa coast, offering a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean. It is open to the public on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from April to October.
On the JR Hachinohe Line visible directly below, a group train called ``TOHOKU EMOTION'' passed by. It's perfect timing. The train runs between Hachinohe Station and Kuji Station, allowing you to enjoy your meal while admiring the scenery.

It has become a tourist destination, and the interior is open to the public on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from spring to fall, and admission is free. You cannot enter on weekdays or outside of the period, but it is possible to get close.
Next door is a ranch where you can enjoy the view of the ocean and the surrounding area.
It is approximately 200m from the free parking lot to the lighthouse. It is easy to walk as there is a mostly flat promenade. It looks like it could be accessed in a wheelchair, but there are some uneven spots due to the ruts left by some vehicles. It seems difficult to pass without assistance.

(Translated by Google) One of Japan's top 50 lighthouses, this beautiful large lighthouse is located on the Sanriku coast, at the northern tip of the Kitakami Mountains, in Samejiku, Hachinohe City.
As the Sanriku coast is an area where warm and cold currents collide, it is prone to fog, especially from late spring to early autumn, so large lighthouses have been built along the Sanriku coast since ancient times. It was built in 1938, following the Shiriyazaki Lighthouse in 1876, the Kinkasan Lighthouse, and the Togasaki Lighthouse in 1902. The height of the lighthouse is 23m, which is not very high, but since it is located on a terrace about 35m above sea level, the distance that the light can reach is about 36km.
The public opening, which is normally held from April to October, was not held in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, but I hope it will resume. It's easy to access, so be sure to stop by.
It will be reopened to the public for a limited time in 2023.
The period is from May 3rd (Wednesday) to October 22nd (Sunday)
Every Saturday, Sunday and holidays
Opening hours are from 9am to 4pm
*Last reception time is 15 minutes before the closing time.
It's free, so please come and visit when you can.
Park your car in the parking lot of the former Seagull View Hotel and walk for 5 minutes.

Small aquarium/fisheries science museum with lots of interesting information if you have the time to sit and watch. I’m glad I came here after visiting Kabushima Shrine nearby.

It was like 300 yen per adult and was a nice place to look at some fish in air conditioning for a few minutes before we walked back to the train station.

(Translated by Google) Take the Hachinohe Line and get off at Same Station. After going to Kabushima Shrine, I still had some time before the next train, so I decided to go to Mariento.
Admission fee is cheap at 300 yen for adults.
However, it is not a place where you will be overwhelmed by the huge aquariums that are worth seeing these days.
Since we went in December, each aquarium had Santa Claus and other Christmas decorations.
There is also a restaurant on the upper floor, which is a great place to relax while looking out at the ocean.
