The Kurazukuri no Machinami, also known as Little Edo Warehouse District, features well-preserved warehouse buildings from the Edo Period. It offers visitors a glimpse into the past with its streets that have been stripped of modern technology and restored to their original appearance. The district is home to artisan shops and restaurants, along with temples and historical landmarks such as the wooden bell tower.
One of my favorite places to visit in the Tokyo surrounds - 'Ko Edo' as it is affectionately called is like a time slip that takes you back to the streets of Edo. They have done a remarkable job or hiding all the telegraph and electricity wiring so the streets look just like they would have hundreds of years ago. The restored warehouse are now home to numerous artisan shops and restaurants, and the abundant temples and historical landmarks like the iconic wooden bell tower set this area apart from other sightseeing spots in and around Tokyo - Well worth a visit. Limited express train with reserved seats available from Tokyo and about a twenty minute walk from Kawagoe Station.

I had a fantastic day exploring the historic district located in the city of Kawagoe. The area is a "warehouse-style street," which refers to the unique architecture of the buildings in the district.
The buildings are mostly traditional Japanese-style warehouses and merchant homes, which were built in the late Edo period and Meiji era.
The district is a popular tourist destination, known for its well-preserved historic buildings and traditional atmosphere. I explored the narrow streets and alleyways, and browsed the many shops and restaurants. Some of the notable landmarks in Kurazukuri no Machinami include the Kita-in Temple and the Toki no Kane bell tower, which still rings out the time every hour.
The area is located about a 1km walk from the train station. It took me around 1 hour to get to Kawagoe from Shibuya with a direct local train.

More or less hidden gem. Delicious, mainly sweet potato themed street food in a super chill atmosphere with all of the old Edo houses. Going there takes less than an hour and is fully covered by the JR pass. Definitely worth checking out if you want to escape the crowds of Tokyo for a little day trip.

I came here with my family during the Kawagoe Matsuri on Oct 15 (Saturday). It was extremely crowded! Unforgettable experience. Lots of Edo-period style architecture. You can authentically experience Japanese culture here. Tons of different shops and eateries to visit! I highly recommend going here!

Recommended place to hang one day. Tons of stores and restaurants in old Edo style buildings. Some of the buildings have original parts while some are rebuilt in the same style. Very cool. We ate at a tonkotsu restaurant, which was delicious. I saw at least one good looking sushi restaurant and a few unagidon places. There was a German style sausage place run by a Japanese family that was fantastic. There is a Studio Ghibli store with many cute items. Could be crowded on a holiday such as spring equinox or one of their larger matsuri, but in general isn't crazy crowded like the city. It's out in Kawagoe in Saitama prefecture, about a 30 min Express train + 10 min bus ride.

Kawagoe or Little Edo as it's frequently called is a small tourist town north of Tokyo.
If your looking to travel back in time and get a feel of older Japan than Kamakura or Kyoto would be better options.
However, being so close to Tokyo, Kawagoe is a great day trip to experience some historic buildings as long as you don't mind them mixed in with new ones.
There isn't much in terms of entertainment outside of restaurants but you can visit the nearby shrine which is supposed to we good for finding love or saving children. You can also try your hand at making clay pottery but space is limited.
4 stars for being a relaxing day trip very close to Tokyo.

Kura no Machi (Old Warehouse District)
What is Kawagoe known for? Its preserved old town! From Naritasan Temple, make your way towards the Kura no Machi 造 の町並 area. With its streets lined with
traditional wooden buildings and aura of old-world charm, it will quickly become obvious why this area is referred to as Ko-edo or Little Edo, and is a must for your
Kawagoe itinerary.

Old Town (Koedo in Japanese, literally “Little Edo”) is an area of Kawagoe City that maintains its historic traditions dating back to the Edo Period (17th to 19th centuries). During that time, Kawagoe was built around the (no long existing) Kawagoe Castle, and played a key role in business transactions with Tokyo (then called Edo). Old Town is both a functioning city as well as a tourist town, and attracts many visitors to walk down its streets, enjoy the old time architectural styles, visit the local shops, and get a taste of life from a bygone era.

This is my second time visited this historical street , my first time was at least 18 years ago when it was newly opened to public. Now I could see the street street has turned into a business area , more shops and buildings are added . I best way is to but a one day pass at the Tourist Information Centre, it is next to the station. The staff are very friendly and helpful.
If you like historical Japanese buildings, this is a place that you should visit. The street is so crowded , many visitors from different countries.

Arrived here by public transport from Ikebukuro. It was about an hour to an hour and a half to arrive here. There were many local and international tourists here. You can see queues for local treats everywhere. There's even a gigantic pudding cafe (if you roam the area far enough to find it).

A nice area where you can stroll around, enjoy old building and do some shopping. Located not too far from Kawagoe Station and there are a lot of bus line so you can easily get here. Loved the vibe here, it’s giving old town vibe just like Kyoto. Very recommended if you have some spare time in Tokyo. Just remember that the shops here closed around 5 pm, so it’s better if you come here for a day trip.

A good place for a day trip. You will see the town preserved in Edo period with many traditional buildings. Main highlights : The Bell Tower, Starbucks, Candy Street, Hikawa Shrine, etc. You can easily walk around to explore the town.
Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine is a serene and historic Shinto shrine known for its beautiful wind chime corridor, intricate carvings, and vibrant festivals. Located just a short walk from the charming street of stone warehouses, this shrine has a 1500-year history of bringing together couples and fostering matrimonial happiness. Young women often visit dressed in traditional yukata to pray for finding a husband.
What a beautiful and fun shrine to visit! The wind chimes - which you can buy at the shrine - are beautiful and appear to be handmade.
This shrine is also popular for couples to visit. It’s considered good luck for lovers to walk around the two ancient trees on site (for good luck in the relationship).
Free entry. Well worth a visit!

Nestled in the Kawagoe region, an ancient shrine exudes tranquility within its expansive grounds. The serene ambiance, with its ample shade, fosters a sense of calmness, creating an ideal retreat from the bustling surroundings.
During my visit, I was fortunate to experience a summer festival in the evening, casting a romantic aura over the shrine. However, being there alone amplified a sense of solitude despite the vibrant festivities. Remarkably, despite the season, the weather remained pleasantly cool, enhancing the overall experience.
A tip for love-seekers: Early morning visits are recommended for those desiring a love talisman. At 7:00 a.m., Maiko distributes queue tickets for lucky stones. However, only 20 people receive them each day, making it essential to arrive early to secure this sought-after token of fortune."
This revision aims to capture the tranquil essence of the shrine, the contrast of solitude amid festivity, and the advice for those seeking a lucky stone for love.

Beautifully maintained shrine in the center of Kawagoe. We came here to visit because I wanted to see the River Behind it which during Hanami has a boat tour. Unfortunately there was none today.
I purchase a few good luck charms for our house and of course made a wish on the wishing wall.
Lots of photo opportunities if you’re into that.

Summer is very summering here! Even though the weather was meccha-hot, i really enjoy spending my time here. First, cicadas’ sounds were so loud (which i loved it). Second, the area is huge and there are various types of omikuji, my favorite one is fish shaped omikuji one, we “fish” it to get it out of the box then read the paper inside. Third, there were also shinto prayer going on there several times, we got to see them from outside of the door (some people and the priests were praying inside the shrine).

A lots of history to go through if I want to make a perfect review of this place right now, so I'm just telling from my little knowledge and experience. Today I visited Kawagoe for work purpose, when returning home at the evening, on my way to Kawagoe station, I came through old and historical structure like building, and that increased my interest. After opening map application in my phone, I found treasure mine again. A lots of historical places, castle remains, ruins, museum, temple, park, Shinto packed in an area. A must visit place for tourist. You must reserve the whole day for exploring the whole area, though I doubt you can't finish it whole. I will come soon again after getting enough idea and history about this place.

It is quiet and peaceful. One thing quite unique about it was that there was some kind of plaza around it where there are many shops for food. Most of them were closed when I visited but seems like on the weekends must get busy.
The temple was undergoing some contructions as well which is a good sign to show that they still care about it.

Kawagoe Kita-in Temple is a Buddhist temple. The temple is also known as "Kita-in," and it is a branch temple of Enryaku-ji, a prominent temple located in Kyoto.
The main hall was built in the 17th century and is one of the few remaining examples of traditional Japanese temple architecture from that period.
I was so impressed with the surrounding garden. The garden features a pond, a waterfall, and a variety of plants and trees, including cherry blossom trees.
The temple houses over 5000 items, including Buddhist statues, paintings, and calligraphy. One of the most famous artifacts in the temple is the "Three Thousand Buddhas of Kita-in," a collection of miniature Buddha statues that line the walls of one of the temple's buildings.
The temple is located just a 15 minute walk from the train station and around 10 minutes from the centre of town so it’s easily accessible.

Kawagoe Castle Honmaru Palace, originally built in 1457, is a historic structure located in Kawagoe City. It was the former residence of feudal lords and features a garden, tatami rooms, and life-size costumed figures. Honmaru Goten (本丸御殿) is the only surviving palace building of Kawagoe Castle which was originally built in 1457 under the direction of Ieyasu Tokugawa, Japan's Shogun at that time. Due to Kawagoe's importance as a trade city and a strategic point of defense north of the capital, throughout the Edo Period, 21 lords, all closely allied with the Tokugawa Shogunate resided at Kawagoe Castle. The palace building lies adjacent to the Kawagoe City Museum, a small but informative place to discover lots of interesting facts about 'Ko Edo' (Little Edo). Parking is available in front of the Museum (other side of the street) and you can get a stamp for free parking if you enter the museum. For less than $5 you can get a combined ticket for the museum and the palace. Well worth the extremely reasonable admission price and even more worth it when paired with a visit to the Kawagoe City Museum across the street. I suggest visiting the museum first and then visiting the palace. There is a beautiful garden that can be viewed from the windows of the palace and makes for some gorgeous photos especially for those who are renting kimono.
My husband and I weren’t sure of what to expect when we chose to visit on a whim and were pleasantly surprised to find out that they have package pricing to visit both the castle and the two museums across the street which are a perfectly complimentary trifecta. The staff were very helpful and friendly despite us being beginners in the language. We spent around half an hour walking around the mostly empty palace and admiring the architecture which we felt was plenty of time for a thorough visit.
Please be aware that outdoor shoes are not allowed and must be removed prior to entering. We also found the COVID protocols to be satisfactory with plenty of sanitiser available, masks and temperature check required and most windows being open with resulted in ample ventilation.

The Kawagoe Matsuri Kaikan museum showcases the historic Kawagoe Festival with displays featuring authentic parade floats. The Taishō era (大正時代, Taishō jidai) was a period in the history of Japan dating from 30 July 1912 to 25 December 1926, coinciding with the reign of Emperor Taishō. The new emperor was a sickly man, which prompted the shift in political power from the old oligarchic group of elder statesmen (or genrō) to the Imperial Diet of Japan and the democratic parties. Thus, the era is considered the time of the liberal movement known as Taishō Democracy; it is usually distinguished from the preceding chaotic Meiji era and the following militaristic-driven first part of the Shōwa era.

Kashiya Yokocho is a lively shopping district where visitors can indulge in traditional Japanese sweets and snacks. The compact area is filled with quaint shops and houses reminiscent of 16th-century Kobe, providing a glimpse into old-fashioned Japan. Many candy sellers offer their delicious treats along the alleyway, making it a popular destination for those seeking nostalgic sweets from the 80s and 90s.
Cute alleyways filled with traditional sweet shops. Not too busy on the Tuesday afternoon. Lovely to see people walking in rented kimonos

The sweets district that part of Kawagoe-shi tourist attraction. I went here during October's Kawagoe-shi Festivals so the place was quite packed with local visitors. No bus service during 2 days festival & no vehicle allowed so yes you just walk.
Various local shops offering traditional sweets & snacks here. I tried Taiyaki, a traditional bread filled with sweet paste, from an old shop. It was a chilling afternoon so I enjoyed it. The sweets are cute with many shapes, colors & taste.
By the way, when I was looking for public restroom the place was situated like 5 min walk toward the bridge. Not that far from it I saw a path to the lower section which you can walk right beside a water way. The place so pretty & I spend some time there since I can't make it to Kawagoe-shi canal due to time.

(Translated by Google) The City Museum of Art stands alongside the museum across from the Kawagoe Castle Ruins. Despite its small size, it houses and exhibits a large collection of works mainly by local artists.
On this day, we visited the collection of local painter Kyuichiro Aihara and the permanent exhibition.
Mr. Aihara's works are characterized by their unique use of color. Even the paintings depicting casual landscapes have a dark depth that draws people in, and there were many works that I couldn't help but stare at. I would also like to see other works.
At the permanent exhibition, an exhibition of abstract art was scheduled to run until December 17th. Of course, there are many difficult works, but there are simple explanations written throughout, so if you trust your own sensibilities and walk around looking at them, you'll have a lot of fun.
I was able to spend a very fulfilling time in between sightseeing in Kawagoe.
Please note that the adjacent museum was closed due to construction. I would like to visit you again when the museum renovation is finished.

I was told that this year's special exhibition had already ended, so I went to see the permanent exhibition.
In the area where special exhibitions are usually held, Kenichi Kanazawa is holding an event called "Marionette 2 on Extension" (sorry, there are no photos), which will be held on Sunday, March 24, 2024. It seems that it will be held until.
I visited the museum by myself on a weekday just before it opened, and was very fortunate to receive various lectures from Mr. Kanazawa himself.
I have some knowledge of music, so I'm very interested in this kind of installation that combines sound and form. This is a bit of a spoiler, but it was fun to see that some of the songs were set to play musical scales.
The museum next door is currently undergoing renovations, so I was able to take in the museum as if I had rented it out (lol).
By the way, it seems that there was a major change in the special feature on Japanese paintings in the permanent exhibition in February. For now, we'll be talking about the second part.
This was also interesting.

Taisho Roman Yume-dori is a pedestrian street that recreates the atmosphere of the Taisho era in early 20th-century Japan. The area boasts many buildings that retain their historical charm, and visitors can enjoy a variety of fashionable restaurants and street food stalls while strolling along the cobblestone road. It's recommended to visit this place as part of a set with nearby attractions such as Kitain and Kumano Shrine.

Hachimangu is a popular shrine to worship at in Kawagoe. For New Years people line up for "hatsumode" the first homage of the year. They put up a large prayer plaque on the fence at the back of the grounds, facing out to the street, with the zodiac sign animal depicted on it. For this year, 2019, it is a boar.
There is also a shrine and some other religious paraphernalia on the grounds. They have events during the year including a children's sumo competition. There is some parking on the grounds, but during busy periods it is hard to get a spot. There are coin parking lots nearby.

This one gets a like from me as there is a shrine to pray for children. I have added a photo to the gallery. People leave baby goods to the deity. You can see nappies, soothers, clothes, rice cra ckers and more.
Renkeiji Temple is an ancient Jodo temple that was constructed in the 16th century. It is a storied Buddhist complex with various statues, including a reputedly healing one, and is famous for its spring cherry blossoms. The temple has great historical significance due to its three founding priests. Visitors can admire the traditional architecture and see many people dressed in kimonos around the area. The temple also honors mothers who have lost their babies during pregnancy or childbirth.
観光地からほど近いですが、境内の静けさに、しばし足が止まるでしょう。
境内には桜や楓などがあります。また、境内の広さから、川越まつりの時にはお化け屋敷や射的などの露店が並びます。

Although it is close to sightseeing spots, the quietness of the precincts will make you stop for a while.
There are cherry blossoms and maple trees in the precincts. Also, due to the size of the precincts, during the Kawagoe Festival, stalls such as haunted houses and shooting games are lined up.

Jodo Buddhism Kohozan Hochiin Renkeiji Temple.
I have been to the nearby area many times, but this is my first visit.
I visited on a weekday, but this is a townscape of storehouses, on the way from the station to Kashiya Yokocho, where people come and go. I had time.

Simple temple which dates back to ancient history. Nothing spectacular but a good place to visit with fewer people. This temple also sells omamori (charms).

This is a simple ancient Jodo temple built in the 16th century. Although it is not spectacular, it is rich in history in terms of the 3 founding priests. We visited Kawagoe in Spring and was extra blessed to have been able to view this historical site in all it's beauty. The sakura trees were in full bloom and added an extra ancient Japanese charm to the place. Simply loved it.

広い境内塵一つ落ちていない綺麗なお寺です。
木陰にベンチもあり、ちょっと一息入れられる所です。

It is a beautiful temple with not a single dust falling on the wide precincts.
There are benches in the shade of the trees, so it's a place where you can take a break.

Traditional temple and you can see many people around in kimono. Similar to this temple many temples around to visit and candy shops. Overall I would give 4 rating.

Part of the Maruhiro family of department stores, but trendier. Great variety of shops and a great supermarket. Very busy on weekends and after working hours. Free WiFi. Convienent to JR Kawagoe Station.

Expensive, but nice. Several floors offer something for almost everybody. The rooftop amusement park has been converted into an open green space, with lots of area for picnics, family gatherings or just hanging out with friends. Nice view towards the Tokyo area. No alcohol or loud music allowed on the rooftop. A new Nojima electronics shop opened on the 4th floor.

The toy store on the 6th floor is the best in this area. There are loads of toys laid out for kids to play with. The restaurants aren't great, but they've a couple of nice cafes, one of which is in the annex across the road. Very pleasant and experienced staff, excellent service

An old school Dept store. What is not to love. Personal attention and a wide variety of items. Groceries in the basement level. Amazon may be convenient but you can't touch and try on things. Just go already.
