Shirahama Beach is a popular destination on the Izu Peninsula, known for its bustling atmosphere and stunning natural beauty. The beach features white sand and turquoise waters with picturesque mountain views. It is a part of Shimoda, a charming beach town that offers various attractions such as hotels, restaurants, and beach shacks. While Shirahama Beach is the most popular choice for many visitors, some opt for the neighboring and less crowded Shirahama Ohama.
Beautiful beach. Wide sandy area. Clear and clean water. Many surfers in the water.
Many parking options along beach. I paid 1000 and the lot closed at 4pm (a bit steep - explore other lots). A good idea is to stop at the 7-11 across from the beach, and get some snacks before. Also nice to have clean change rooms and bathroom facilities on site.

Nice beach, clean, big, clean beautiful water. But you need to find a place to change. There are no amenities either. All shops across the road. You can take a bus from Shimoda Station.

Awesome beach for lazing around beginners surfing

There is a 7/11 near the beach which is quite well stocked. For stay you can choose Pension a Million roses it is a very good hotel.

One of the most famous beaches around Izu. From Shimoda Station, take the bus or taxi. The water is beautiful, but when I went in the early season it was too cold! Check for the local season of festival and fireworks. The fireworks specially are magnificent and you can watch it from the beach. Coming from Tokyo, I stayed one night at the local ryokan (guest house) and it was a wonderful weekend.

Awesome beach. Highly recommended. Nice white sand. Went on a weekday in early July and was not crowded at all. Mostly foreign tourists since Japanese children not on summer break yet. Nice waves for body surfing, boogie boarding or beginning surfing. Surf shop across the road. Nice rocks and sea caves to explore at north and south ends of beach.

White sands and amazing waves. Many facilities, parking lots and convenes stores around. Perfect place for holiday making.
The ebb and tide movement is very strong, even when you place your beach sheet away from the water, from 3-4 pm the tides grow stronger and water can reach to your sheet area so better place your sheet/ tent further away if planing to stay for prolonged time.

It was surreal experiencing the beach at night in off season and under a full moon. It's a very calm, peaceful, and serene beach with pleasant waves. Definitely one of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen, with white sand. The waters were really clean and one of the bluest I've ever seen during the day. The beach is also known for surfing and you can see the locals early in the morning riding the waves.
Anirudh Proddutoor — Google review
Mostly nice soft sand as you get closer to the water. Tide can come start to rise early (around 2 or 3ish), but there’s still some parts of the beach where you can sit. It can it crowded though there is room for you to have your own space. Parking is 1000¥ right next to the beach and it is limited. There is also parking across the street next to family mart. There are showers also 300¥ for 3 mins (they are in a portable potty).

Very good beach for swimming & walk. Plenty of Parking space; however most of them closed @ 5pm. You can order take out food from your tent too. Everything is perfect.
The Ryugu Sea Cave is a spectacular tourist destination, renowned for its distinctive structure featuring a large hole in the roof and stunning panoramic ocean views from the edge of the crater. Although it can be difficult to access without personal transportation due to its remote location, visitors are rewarded with crystal-clear waters and an intriguing heart-shaped formation that can be viewed from both above and below. Those traveling by bus on weekends should plan accordingly to ensure they have enough time to explore this unique natural wonder within the limited timeframe.
Nice cave with a sand ski beach next to it.
Make sure to Google the bus timetable.
There aren't many buses there. But you can walk 20 minutes to a different bus stop. There are more buses.

The sea cave was a hidden gem and pleasantly unexpected. Walking down the stairs into the tunnel brings you to the beach and the uniqueness of the cave itself. You can also follow the trail up and above the sea cave for a 360 view which only took about 10 minutes and was a moderate hike. This place is mostly for picture taking and not for swimming. Expect to pay ¥500 for parking.

Pretty cool cave. You can get down into the bottom, or appreciate the heart-shape via the loop at the top. There's also a nice little shrine at the top and a good view of the scenery.

Ryugu Sea Cave locates on the southern area of the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka prefecture. The cave is a creation of waves carving and shaping the rocks on the sea.
Sora Beautiful — Google review
Nothing special. If you are traveling by bus on the weekend you have to do rapid fire tourism since the bus is after 30 minutes you go to the cave. The next bus is after 2 hours. 30 minutes are enough to check out the cave from the bottom and top but not enough time to visit the sandbanks.

It’s a very interesting cave as the structure is very different. The ocean water is clean too and you can observe the cave from the bottom as well as the top. It makes a heart shape. The place is a bit isolated so take care of the public transport timings if you don’t have a car.
Tuba Ali — Google review
It’s not just a cave. Go up the stairs and you’ll see where the beauty of Izu is at. One thing to be aware of is that there are plenty of mosquitos so bring a spray. There’s a tiny path that goes off the main one where you’re positioned right on the edge of a cliff. That’s where most of my pictures were taken.
Tatadohama Beach, located in Shimoda City, Shizuoka Prefecture, is a popular destination for surfers and beach enthusiasts. The beach features soft sand, warm waters, and a long coastline with sweet waves that make it ideal for water sports like surfing. A small sandy beach that was virtually deserted, but clearly beloved of surfers. There were a few trying the rather small waves. Either end of the beach holds points of interest - a natural tunnel rough the rock to the sea (used for small boat launching) at one end and some wild rock formations and caves at the other. The area isn't built up at all. I was here early April, so off-season.

Beautiful beach. The waves was strong this day and many surfers are there. We were sitting on the concrete parking lot, watching the waves feeling the sea breeze.beautiful memory. The mountain summit Nesugatayama features a lookout point that provides stunning vistas of the Pacific Ocean. The observation deck can be reached via a cable car, offering visitors an exciting and memorable experience. This mountain peak is known for its picturesque surroundings and panoramic views, making it a popular destination for nature enthusiasts and sightseers alike. Its strategic location in the region allows for unparalleled scenery that captivates visitors from all over the world.
The ropeway starts in front of the station and has intervals of about 15 mins. The view at the top is beautiful!
There are some basic amenities and shops available at the top. There is a little and pleasant hike through the woods. We had a baby stroller and it was difficult to use it at the top, but the shop owner was courteous to park the stroller at the shop for some time. A full 5 stars goes for it :-)

There's a nice park at the top. I even saw deer from only five meters away.
I hiked up the mountain by foot, which I wouldn't recommend. You'll walk on the road for the majority of the way. Besides, at least the day I came, you could not get to the observation deck, the shrine etc. at the top! It seems you *have* to take the ropeway to access that section. The path there was blocked through an electric fence.

(Translated by Google) I visited by riding the ropeway while sightseeing in Shimoda.
The ropeway takes about 3 minutes one way and runs every 15 minutes.
The promenade to the top of the mountain was well maintained and everyone from children to the elderly were walking up the mountain.
There were observation decks, monuments, and temples overlooking the ocean here and there, seasonal flowers were blooming, and there were unexpectedly many great spots to take pictures.
There was a pond with long-finned carp, and although it was winter, there wasn't much movement, but it was beautiful.
The thing that stuck with me the most was the sight of early-blooming cherry blossoms (I don't know if they were Kanzakura or Kawazu-zakura) in full bloom, and the largest number of white-eyes I've ever seen flying from flower to flower.
Is this heaven? It was a moment where I could forget about everyday life.
I was able to enjoy it more than I expected, and it was worth the trip up the ropeway.
There is also a beautiful cafe, although I did not use it due to time constraints.

Shimoda Underwater Aquarium, also known as the Shimoda Floating Aquarium, is a unique sightseeing spot in Shimoda City. It stands out for its distinctive floating structure on the water. Visitors can enjoy dolphin shows and penguin feeding while observing marine life from an underwater viewing deck. The aquarium's main attraction is the Aquadome Perry, a large cylindrical tank that replicates the Izu Sea environment.
Tiny but nice. Worth visiting. Didn't know that penguins could be trained. Dolphins not only live in the pool, but also has their own area of real sea area, which hopefully makes them happier.

Very nice aquarium. Especially the dolphin enclosure is amazing. It’s part of a beach where the dolphins can freely swim around and eat natural fish. But also get fed on the side.

They were really well-trained and they were doing exactly what they were ordered.

We visited Shimoda Aquarium during our visit to Ito area. It is not a big aquarium but busy enough for whole family to be entertained. We arrived around 1048 and just on time for dolphin show around 11am. Then joined the penguins march show at the 1125. After that seal show 1145. All the shows are entertaining, fun and full of actions ( even though we couldn’t understand the Japanese language). There is a gift shop and cafe near the entrance. Overall we had a good time.

Parking was free. It cost about 2100 yen per adult to enter but once you go in, you will not be disappointed. We saw the dolphin show, the seal (or sea lion, I don't remember lol) and we saw the penguin show. Did I tell you I got to feed a sea otter? That was also an experience. Definitely a place you can go and enjoy to the fullest.
P.S their underwater aquarium is really mesmerizing.
P.S.2 try their Izu Zangi (fried chicken originally from Hokkaido) and their croquet...you won't be disappointed lol

It was very sad to see how wild dolphins are kept in 2.5X2.5 meter water cages to “break” them in order to cooperate. Staff were riding dolphins as if they were horses. It was heartbreaking to see such cruelty. I don’t recommend anyone to participate in such ignorance. I hope they’ll have the kindness and integrity to release all dolphins back to the sea where they belong.
Shlomit Yaish B — Google review
It's a good experience, very fun, and lots of amazing shows within the day. About 55 minutes wait between each show. There's turtles, dolphins, otters, penguins, and seals in the aquarium, as well as smaller sea creatures such as crabs and coral fishes. 🪸 🦭 🌊
Actual Score Overall: 4.1/5
Thoughts: I liked the exhibitions and aquariums inside the park - especially the seals. But it was a bit hot as there was no air-con within the buildings which drived me away after 2h 30min. Overall, I had a good experience. I would visit again.
PS: I don't recommend eating there, quite overpriced, obviously.
Ocean Chan (Seal) — Google review
I had the misfortune to cycle past this place while enjoying a cycling trip around beautiful Shimoda!
At the front entrance is a pool containing two very large sea turtles, this pool is tiny (around 4x4 meters) and the two turtles just swim aimlessly in circles, when I approached one turtle came to the edge of the pool and you could tell from the look it's eye that it was unhappy. There is nothing in this pool, simply tiled walls, tiled floor. It is completely inhumane and cruel. If this is what greets you at the entrance I don't even want to know what's inside the aquarium... but from reading other one star reviews for this place I get a good idea. This place should be SHUT DOWN and all animals either returned to the wild, or if that's not possible, rehomed in an appropriate and caring environment as close to being wild as possible. Japan is a wonderful country with such a focus on the natural world, I simply don't understand how places like this are being allowed to continue to operate. Don't visit this place and send the owners a clear message that this is inhumane!

Great place for families! Dolphins, seals, sea lions, penguins and more. The jellyfish exhibit is a must see. Recommend a half day visit to see everything. Shows are timed so you can go from one to the next with time to view the exhibits. Extra cost for thing like feeding or swimming with the dolphins or seating on a boat for the “Wonder Ocean” show. Nice souvenir shop that was reasonably priced.

The bay that this Aquarium is in is gorgeous. I chose to walk to the Aquarium, and it is a bit of a walk, but very scenic with great views of the mountains.
The aquarium itself is a bit dated, but very clean and well cared for. There are many exhibits, but not as many as you might find in a large city's aquarium.
Shimoda Aquarium more than makes up for this with the beautiful surroundings and environment, and activities like dolphin feeding.

This is the most recommended place to see daffodils in and around the Kanto region.
Although the size of its natural habitat is not as far as that of Kyonan Town in Chiba Prefecture, it has a concentrated number of attractions, and you can also enjoy the contrast between the red aloe flowers, the blue sky and blue sea, and the black rocky reef. The coast, which is lined with columnar joints called "Tawara Iso," is quite a sight to behold as a geosite.
Access is poor. Getting to the nearest station, Izukyu Shimoda, is a chore, and the buses from there don't run frequently enough (although they do increase the number of buses during the Daffodil Festival). It would be easier to plan your itinerary if you split your time between going there and returning by taxi.

If you walk down the slope for about 5 minutes from the Tsumekizaki Natural Park parking lot, you will arrive at the Tsumekizaki bus stop and paid parking lot.

In front of the coast is a colony of daffodils, and the best time to see them is from December to January.
Unfortunately, not a single flower was blooming on this day (^^;)
When you follow the coastline to the end, there is a climbing path that leads to the lighthouse, so start climbing.
If you climb up and walk a little to the right, you can see Tawara Iso.
Tawaraiso is a strangely shaped rock that looks like a bundle of pencils, and is said to be a crack formed by magma shrinking as it cools.
If you walk to the left, you will see the Tsumekizaki Lighthouse.

A little before was 1000 yen for 3 minutes on foot. There is also a shop in the parking lot, and food, alcohol, watermelon, etc. are fulfilling.
There is one foot washing area in the restroom. The price for the shower is 500 yen for 5 minutes. The beach is quite wide, so I don't mind if it's crowded.
The waves are also big sometimes and the sound is loud. The sandy beach is too smooth and the waves are quite muddy, but the water is very clean. Don't lose to the island!
It was lively at the seaside school in Arakawa-ku, Tokyo!

Scenic beaches. Absolutely this place is worth a visit! The ocean water is very clear and beautiful. We found crabs, hermit crabs, shrimp, and lots of little fish on the rocks on the beach! Restrooms and restaurants are also available on this beach.
The waves on Shimoda's beaches tend to be high. However, the locals tell us that this beach is suitable for small children because the waves are weak. Shimoda Station provides information on some of the beaches to see if swimming is allowed that day. Other beaches were closed for swimming due to high waves, but this beach was still open for swimming that day! Perfect beach for families!

No big waves, super clean water.
It was a quite wide beach so didn’t feel too crowded.

Visited July 2023.
A Saitama resident who likes the sea of Shimoda, he has visited Shirahama Ohama, Tatadohama, Iritahama, and Kisami Ohama in the past.
This Sotoura beach was as beautiful as Irita and Tatado.
Also, because it is a cove, the waves are gentle, making it ideal for families with small children.
A local said, "There are waves today," so maybe there aren't more waves than usual.
By the way, the access to the parking lot is not a narrow road, so it is easy to visit.
At least the road was wider than Irita.
It is a beach that I would like to visit again next summer.

Not as crowded as Shirahama beach. Out of the beaches in Shimoda, Sotoura is our top pick. It is family friendly and you can definitely have a good time with your kids.
Waves are not that strong. They have public showers which costs 500yen per 5 minute and some floaters rental.
The parking lot is conveniently located so you don’t have to worry much if you have lots of stuffs to bring.

I asked on 2023/8/27. I was swimming at the nearby Shirahama Ohama Beach, and stopped by on my way home. The only difference is the height of the waves. This is in the back of the cove, so the waves are very calm. This is safe even for children. Playground equipment was floating off the coast, and it was like an island. Children seemed to enjoy riding, but adults also want to swim and land.

We went in early October and it was still warm. It was easy to park next to the beach. It’s good because you can beat some of the crowds at the surrounding beaches, but there was more trash than is comfortable in the sand and in the water. If I could give it a more specific rating it would be 3.8, but 4 stars because it’s actually a decent beginner-friendly surf spot too.

Parking fee 2000Y, beach OK kids friendly. Toilets are terrible - shame! , and free showers are not in service to force you to use 500Y coin ones.

Just like any other beach but the sand is very fine (a little dangerous for electric devices). Also nice to visit with kids.

Great place to stay with family, free parking, calm sea. My favorite beach.
Iritahama Beach is a well-known tourist attraction, popular for both surfing and swimming. The beach boasts rocky outcrops on either end and is surrounded by lush greenery. The sand at Iritahama Beach is soft and the water is pristine, making it an ideal spot for families with children. While parking may be limited and requires payment, visitors can also rent beach equipment on-site.
the most beautiful beach I have been to, not far from Tokyo.

The local people don't like foreigners or are hostile... the sand is so fine and sticky that it gets inside your bikini and very hot, never go barefoot. There are better beach options nearby.

During lifeguard hours you can only use a body board in the boarding zone IF you have flippers/fins so keep that in mind, seemed a bit strange to be honest. Overall it’s a beautiful beach (though not as pretty as others in Izu) but this one is seems to be meant for boarding and better waves so I’d recommend it if you’re coming to surf or swim at a beach with actual waves.
A peaceful and quiet shrine, definitely worth a visit when you are in Shimoda.
The weather was great when we were there, and our toddler even got to do some water-play at the beach while we took photos of the Tori gate by the sea.

Cute little beach.. not crowded, mainly used by guests of Tokyu Shimoda hotel.
Calm and not wavy as there is a wave breaker
Kujuppama Beach is a small, secluded beach located southeast of Shimoda. Despite its hidden location, it's popular among visitors looking for a quieter beach experience. The calm waters make it ideal for snorkeling and swimming, and the surrounding views of mountains add to its charm. Visitors can enjoy ample space for sunbathing and swimming, with facilities such as food stands, rental shops, showers, and toilets available.
I bagged a lot of pet bottles these days than last year. Small tent is available not too crowded and the beach itself is gorgeous parking fee is 1000 yen. Stayed here for a week and I keep on coming back.
Jin Kikuzaki — Google review
A beautifully located beach which unfortunately is spoiled by all the litter lying around. This beach is very quiet and has plenty places to relax and swim/snorkel, however unfortunately there is excessive litter and rubbish along the shoreline and between the rocks. There was also a stagnant pool of water which had some little floating about in it. It made what should be a beautiful beach very disappointing. There really should be regular beach cleans happening here.
Darren MacRae — Google review
This place was great! Parking was 1,000 yen
(Parking we used closed at 6pm) And was directly across for the way down to the beach. We went around 4:00ish and there were very few people. Almost everyone started leaving around 5ish.
There are also showers for 300 yen and other rental goods like pool floaties. Outhouses and sink near the beach.
Would def go back. Gave it 4 stars just because the walk back up the hill is brutal.

I parked in the Tsumekizaki Nature Park parking lot, referring to past reviews. If you are a general adult, I think that there is no problem in this parking lot. However, the sidewalks are narrow and the way back is uphill, so those with weak legs or children should use the venue parking lot.

It is well maintained and you can feel the efforts of the locals. My companion immediately found out that I was lame and told me that I could get off by car. The surrounding area is a cape, so there are ups and downs, and there are places where it is difficult to walk on the coast. If you take a walk, including the lighthouse, you can taste a part of the UNESCO Geopark. If you have trouble walking, you'll have plenty of fun around the coastal parking lot. Toji Beach is a secluded spot that offers more privacy compared to larger beaches, making it a preferred destination for some travelers. One unique feature of the area is the Toji Sand Skiing Field, where visitors can ski down a gentle slope that faces the ocean. In addition to the sand ski resort, you can also see Ryugu Cave, which is famous for its power spot, by going down the stairs from the parking lot.

It was no exaggeration to say that I was looking forward to the trip for sand skiing, so when I asked the man in the parking lot for help, he told me that there are several other facilities that rent out sleds.
I told him that I could borrow a sled at a place called Taguso, and he took the trouble to call me, perhaps because he was an acquaintance, and the guy at Taguso brought me a sled. Moreover, it is 200 yen.
Thanks to my uncle, I narrowly escaped death. I'm really thankful to you.
And sand skiing is a lot of fun, but it's pretty harsh with slopes and sandstorms.

Considering the formation of this topography, it is only natural that a fierce wind blows from the sea side, and the sand hits the face directly.
