The backwaters of Alleppey are a must-visit destination, renowned for their enchanting beauty that evokes imagery from fairy tales. Kerala Kayaking provides an online booking service to explore these captivating backwaters at a cost of 1500 INR per person, which includes pick-up, boat rental, breakfast and return. The experience is unforgettable; taking the Alleppey Express train from Chennai followed by a houseboat tour that offers lunch and evening snacks.
Loved the boating experience. Chill, calm and soothing. The boating lasted for around 2 and half hours and cost around 3000 rupees. I got to see fields that are below sea level (rare), picturesque backwaters, experienced eagle sitting on my shoulders in a hotel midway, narrow canals, different varieties of boats, boat construction yard, people doing their daily chores on the river side etc. Would recommend this to others.

Boat ride in house boat can be tried here for 1-2hour. They will take you for a round trip, paddy fields. Not recommend for night stay. Need to bargain for boat ride approx they charge Rs 800 -1000 per hour per boat. You can find many houseboats . Water is bit stinky near shore. Can try once if you are in Alleppey. Check for good boats before taking a ride although most of them are maintained well

The entire experience was fabulous, Beautiful houseboat with all amenities ,The boat takes through the entire lake for almost 2 hour cruise journey and then in the evening it settles down near the shore, It is a beautiful experience to watch the sunset & a cherry on the cake moment when you have your girl gang with you & spend the entire night in the houseboat, everything was great except that there were mosquitoes but if you are careful about them then you can prevent them from coming into the room. The food quality and service was great, the quantity offered was also good enough. Overall a must and different experience of the entire Kerala trip.

It was a lifetime experience. Heading towards Alleppey was amazing experience for me and my wife. First we took a train named Alleppey Express from Chennai. It takes almost 13 plus hours to reach in Alleppey. There we took a house boat for day tour. The house boat provides lunch and evening snacks. Love to go again.

Amazing experience of boating in the infamous backwater of Kerala. This place is must to visit as part of Kerala trip. There are two types of boats available houseboat and sight seeing boats. Sight seeing boats are for 2-3 hrs and house boats are 6-7 hours which includes lunch/dinner based on the timings. Price vary from number of person for house boat.

Its a great spot in God 's own country. Alleppey is also the home of backwaters and is also known as the Venice of the East. The banks are dotted with villages. But largely, the landscape is like a large canvas full of green, coconut trees, palms and paddy fields. The best place to experience the backwaters is from the deck of a houseboat. Book an exclusive boat or book it in sharing (as per your needs). Enjoy the local cuisine, order sea food, have a glass of local wine, treat yourself to a massage, hop onto a speed boat for water sports, dance to music in the evening, get crazy good clicks for your social media....I could do all this in one day. Just make sure that:
-The weather is not too hot
-The boat is neat and clean
-Enjoy the breeze from the deck of the boat.
Prices for booking a boat for the day time only (about 1000 per person)
For booking the boat for 24 hours, anywhere between 15000 to 30000 depending on the number of bedrooms (2 to 4)
The process include welcome drinks, all meals and tea and snacks twice a day.
Have fun

Alleppey's backwaters are super popular with tourists, but the best part is how chill and relaxing the boat journey is. You get to float along calm canals, surrounded by beautiful nature. Alleppey backwaters are synonyms for Venice. The boat ride is very relaxing with all the greenery in the surrounding. All kinds of boats are available from economy to super premium.
Do not book boat in advance via travell agent they take hefty commission better to reach here at finishing point and search for the boats as per your preference you will get a very good deal plus you can go around the boat to get actual impression and boat condition.

The Revi Karunakaran Museum is an exquisite establishment displaying a private family collection with a diverse range of religious artwork. The museum comprises three floors, with distinct sections dedicated to four primary religions including Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, and Christianity. The galleries feature ivory exhibits, murals, and paintings that showcase the development of Kerala through over 3800 unique displays in the special Kerala Room.
It is their private collection of Mr. Ravi Karunakaran later after their death their family converted into museum if you have around 2 hours you can visit this place. There is guide inside explain you regarding this collections. Ticket price is Rupees 200 I don't think it's that much worth actually, but its ok. Inside photography is prohibited.

A display of unimaginable wealth and opulence. It's just items they have bought nothing else. Presented as if they have done something extraordinary. More than a token of love this is a token of affluence.
They have kept a car, one of only two models ever made. The attendant was describing it as if the rich person himself has designed and engineered the car.
Ivory items obtained by killing elephants and the presenter was showing it as if it's a great achievement. So much ivory... cannot imagine how many elephants were killed. The art pieces themselves are great, beautiful and delicately crafted. But the credit goes to the artists who made it. Not to the people who just bought it and have put it on display. Everywhere you see you'll just think, wow this person was really rich.
Oh, also as if they don't have enough money the entry fee for the "museum", if you can call it that, is Rs 200.
My suggestion is to skip this and go somewhere else. We only went here because the church was closed and we had time to kill. Visit the coir museum instead.

Rs.150 entry fee per head is not worth to spend for the things used by an old guy.

The completely unplanned visit to Shri Revi Karunakaran memorial museum was infact one of 'The Best' experiences of my life, safe to say it has left an indelible mark on my mind and heart. Nestled discreetly within the bustling city of Alappuzha, this hidden gem offered an extraordinary experience that nothing had prepared me for.
The atmosphere within the museum was serene, allowing the visitors to fully absorb the beauty and grandeur of the collection in itself. An impressive collection of artifacts , spanning across various civilizations and cultures, procured and maintained with utmost care. It also has the biggest collection of Ivory, and Swarovski crystals that i have every come across. Apart from that, precious stones, timeless artifacts, remains of wonderful cultures and ethnic groups, it is such a great opportunity for an enthusiast to admire the diversity of cultures across the world. Curated by Ms Betty Karan in memory of her late husband, this museum is probably one of the most underrated gems in our country .
NOTE: Photography is not allowed inside, and it definitely is better to enjoy it fully without the hindrance of a phone camera.

The ‘museum’ aka private collection of serious wealth, is of its time.
The Kerala room is the most interesting.
Lots of ivory on display on the 1st floor, which some might find off putting in ‘24, but the carving is intricate.
There is a complete lack of any info on where Rivi purchased his trinkets from, so there’s no context. That’s a real shame and missed opportunity.
The museum staff try to help, but just repeated it’s a very important private collection and nothing else. Oh and no photos please.
As you can see there’s dual charging for foreigners/Indian Nationals, fair enough.
But it’s not worth 500 or even 200 to go in.
Could Rivi’s family continue their philanthropy and let everyone in for a fair price - ie pro bono?
Alappuzha Beach is a renowned waterfront destination featuring a historical pier, lighthouse, and charming houseboat cruises. This picturesque location is one of the city's most tranquil areas, despite being a bustling commercial beach. One of the best and beautiful beach in Kerala. It's located near the allapuzha railway station. Less 1.5 km in railway station by walk. Very well clean and maintened beach in Kerala. The main attraction was the color of the sky. It was amazing. Waves are quite and they in super sync with the blowing breeze .

Mornings are cool with fewer people, so it's a good call to visit then. Evenings get crowded, though. There's parking available, but it comes with a fee yet visitors have to park on the side of the road The best time for the beach vibes is during sunset, but expect it to be packed. it's a clean and long beach, waves are strong which is unsafe for kids and there are winds too. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a tranquil coastal getaway!
Alleppey Beach is a host to many festivals like the Sand Art Festival and Alappuzha Beach Festival. The beach is also known for its various recreational activities. Visitors can engage in beach volleyball, cricket, and other beach sports. There are private bathing spots and paid washing/changing areas near the beach. An old discarded small ship was found at the beach to display for visitors.
Alleppey Lighthouse, established in 1862 and painted in red and white stripes, is a popular tourist spot that offers breathtaking panoramic views of Alappuzha and the sea. Visitors can also explore a small history museum located nearby. However, climbing up the narrow staircase to reach the top can be challenging. Shoes are required to be removed outside before entering.
Well worth a visit on your way to the beach or coming back from the beach . It is only a 6 km walk from town centre to beach passing by the Light House and crossing the rail tracks.

From the top, you'll be treated to breathtaking views of the town and the ocean, along with the unique sight of passing trains on an adjacent railway track. This is definitely one of the MUST VISIT places if you're visiting Alappuzha beach. It is very close to the beach (walking distance of course). Even though the lighthouse is not that high, the view at the top is phenomenal! You can see the beach, some trees, a pool (?) and the 360° view of the sky.
Important details about the lighthouse:
-Entry fees: ₹20 (additional ₹10 if you wanna take photos). For foreigners, the entry fee is ₹50.
-There is a total of 104 wooden steps we have to climb (yes I counted) and at the end, there is a ladder. The elderly will definitely have trouble climbing to the top but there are plenty of places to sit with shade at the bottom if they choose to remain down.
-There is a time limit: You can only spend 10 minutes at the top of the lighthouse. And you can spend 30 minutes inside the compound.

Located in walking distance from Alappuzha beach this light house gives 360 degree view of the sea and its surroundings. 100+ steep steps would be difficult for elderly people but the view is definitely worth the climb. Visitors are not allowed past 5:30 pm.A small museum describes the history of the light house. There is also a small play area for kids which includes a life size elephant statue that kids will love.
Entire compound is tidy and well maintained.Clean restrooms. Nominal ticket charge. Road side parking.

It's not much, but I'd say it's a must visit for people coming here for the first time. It's busy during hols, but it's kinda cool.
You won't be able to get inside during the night, but it's a whole another vibe at dark.
Or maybe I'm just too hyped up about a light house because I read too much Famous Five when I was a kid.
Muhammed Yaseen — Google review
Poorly designed for tourists. The staircase is narrow and there's no intermediate space for people to wait. So, if there's people coming from both up and down, it's very difficult to manage. Whatever space is there in the middle, you cannot access it as it's blocked by rods. At the top, view is very nice. You can see the whole town and the sea.
Vaibhav Jena — Google review
I didn't expect the views to be so good. As it's a light house, you have to climb stairs to reach the top but once you reach, you are welcomed by the cool breeze coming from the sea in front of you. I am sure it would be an amazing place for sunset but it gets closed at 5.30 PM. Still the sunset hues at around 5-5.30 are worth watching.
There is a small museum too which tells the history of instruments used in the light house from the beginning.
Worth a visit!!
Anushree Pathak — Google review
Lovely historical place which is really well maintained! Have to walk up a lot of steps but the view is absolutely worth it! You can see the alappuzha beach as well as backwaters from here!
Don't miss the small lighthouse museum at the entrance gate!

A good place to visit specially during the evening for having some calm and serene views of nature, sea from the aerial view... Have to get on top of tower by climbing the steps which are a bit uncomfortable to climb at final stages but the climb is worth as the view from above is very nice and beautiful...
There are timings during which the entrance is allowed so do check and confirm before getting on
The International Coir Museum showcases the history of the coir industry in Kerala through various exhibits and unique coir-made objects. Visitors can witness the process of coir processing and manufacturing while admiring beautiful sculptures, portraits, and other art pieces crafted out of coir. A knowledgeable guide is available to provide detailed explanations throughout the museum, which also features a shop where visitors can purchase handcrafted coir decorative products. Due to Covid restrictions, only card payments are accepted at this time.
This small museum is a lovely place to visit when you are in Alleppey. Staff is very helpful. Wonderful pieces are exhibit there. It was very quick to see the museum. Trust me you will not regret. We must appreciate mystic hands 🙏

This is an amazing museum with lots of hand crafted coir products. There is a guide who will walk with us and explain everything in details. They have a shop where we can buy some good handcrafted coir decorative and products. They won't accept any currencies due to covid situation, so we have to pay thru card.
Basil K Varghese — Google review
The coir museum is good but the security guard is too bad. The whole experience would have better if the people gaurd was polite enough.
The museum accepts only card payment for buying tickets and any souvenir. We were suppose to buy many items for our well-wishers but the gaurd didn't allow us to go out to fetch cards for payment from car.
Rest assured the labour that was put in one mat is tremendous. You get to see how they weave the coir from coconut shell into desired product.

Beautiful crafts made of coir makes the place interesting. The process of coir making can be seen. The officers and the securities are friendly.

Important: please carry a payment card with you ( Debit or credit) for buying tickets and souvenirs. They do not accept cash or UPI.
So the place is very well maintained and clean. The work has been perfectly placed and exhibited.
There could have been more items in the souvenir shop.
It takes 20-30 minutes to visit the place. The staff knows Hindi, Malayalam and English and they are very polite.
You can take a ticket for taking pictures as well. Very affordable. If you want to buy anything, they have mats available and very less decor items.
They are closed in Monday.

International coir museum is not much worth it as we think. Only card payment is accepted in the ticket counter. 20 rupees per adult ticket for mobile photography they are charging Rs 50. Please don't buy photography tickets because there is nothing inside for photography. Toilet facility is good. Only 10 minutes is enough to watch this museum.

This museum was so creative. Everything here was made of coir, the remaining stuff that comes off when we cut coconuts.
The scrapes of coconuts basically.
So creative and beautiful.
The cleanliness and awareness of the museum is awesome.
Loved the ganeshji made of coir.
There were many items made of coir. So beautiful 😍
Loved the services too.
Thanks.

And if you want to see a film or documentary as well then 40 rupees

During the Diamond Jubilee year, Coir Board built an International Coir Museum that showcases historical events and the progression of technological breakthroughs in the Coir Sector. On May 27, 2014, the International Museum was opened at the Coir Board Complex in Kalavoor by the Honorable Chief Minister of Kerala, Shri Oommen Chandy. The public may now visit this museum. The International Coir Museum was founded to present the growth of the coir business via the most recent advancements that have sparked a revolution. Alleppey's tourism map mentions this museum as a beautiful location.
The museum also showcases the evolution of the coir industry's traditional methods, such as retting and fiber extraction, the introduction of mechanization in the coir business, etc. Visitors are taken on a brief video tour of the history of the coir industry, including its inception, expansion, and current advancements resulting from ongoing research and development. This will provide nostalgic memories of the coir business. The Museum is connected to a gift shop where guests may enjoy SHOPPING a variety of coir handicrafts, doormats, ornaments, etc.

This museum showcases the building of coir industry. Coir is made from the shell and fiber of coconuts. The industry took hold in the 1850s. Many products of everyday use is produced and sold around the world. They have equipment to make coir from the early days till the 20th century. Fascinating place. I would recommend this place for those interested in history and manufacturing development in the area.

This is a place located in Alappuzha on highway to kochi. This Museum is dedicated to coir industry. Displays many items made of coir, processes in making coir and it's products and various related machinery. Not a very huge Museum but does the job very well. Had a small souvenir shop where one can find quite a few items at much cheaper process compared to market/other commercial souvenir shops. Must visit place if you are in Alappuzha.
Mayank Namdeo — Google review
A small yet quite interesting museum exhibiting items made from coconut coir products. Wonderful artefacts, sculptures and designs made out of coir on display. It also has a section that has the actual machinery used to prepare coir products. It also showcases the traditional method of extracting fibre and retting coir used during the pre-mechanised times. Plus, it has a decent souvenir shop from where you can buy handicrafts and ornaments made at the museum itself.
The museum guide was friendly and did a good job of informing us about the development of coir industry though the ages.
Entry tickets are priced at 20 rupees per person. Photography is charged at 50 rupees. However, they accept only card payment which is a big bummer. Hope they start cash and UPI soon.
Another down side was the ticketing staff. I found them disinterested and unwelcoming.
Half an hour is sufficient to check out the whole museum. It is located on the highway so you can easily spot it. It was a great experience to visit this museum. It is a good option to explore something different and interesting in Kerala. A recommended visit to learn about this lesser known industry of India.

Good to visit and see different uses of coir. There is entry fee for person and mobile. Museum can be seen in 20-30 minutes.
MANGESH PAPAL — Google review
As a part of our Kerala itinerary, visited the museum. A very good insight on conversion of the coir into a variety of products.
Though the plastics have played spoilsport in their marketshare, the reason is also the high costs. The Bengal connection was an interesting part of history.
The government must remove taxes of all types for these products
The Kalloorkad St. Mary's Basilica is a historic Catholic church located in Alleppey, built on the site where Syrian Christians established a church over 1000 years ago. Constructed in 427 AD, this beautiful basilica is renowned for its architecture and rich legacy which draws tourists from all over the world. The church hosts two festivals annually to commemorate various occasions, attracting a large number of visitors.
One of the very old christian churches in kerala, re constructed during the portugese period in the 16 century, beautiful wood carved altar, stone cross with lamp post from the ancient church are worth seeing. there is a camera charge levied by the church, must remove footwears outside the building. It is situated on the banks of the backwaters and hence reachable by boats also. When we went, there were a couple of houseboats parked from which tourists had come to the church. This is somewhere in a village area however the lushy green view on the way to the churh is worth watching. It is so peaceful as there will be no traffic and no pollution.

History :-
One of the oldest Christian churches in India, Champakulam Kalloorkadu St. Mary's Basilica is also known as Champakulam Valia Palli. It serves as the mother church for nearly all of the Catholic Syrian churches in the Alleppey District. The church, which dates back to AD 427, underwent multiple reconstructions. The Apostle Saint Thomas himself founded the Niranam Church, which was formerly home to Champakulam Church. The numerous rock inscriptions that can be discovered all over the church provide historical information.
With clear records of its antiquity dating back to AD 1151, the open-air Rock Cross at Champakulam Church is among the oldest crosses. The church's surroundings are home to several archaeological artifacts that provide additional historical context. Throughout the eighteenth century, the Champakulam Church played a crucial part in numerous ecumenical initiatives and enjoyed very cordial ties with the Puthenkoottukar. This parish is the birthplace of Ikkako Kathanar, one of the martyrs (nasranis) among the East Syriac Catholics.
Champakulam church has been recognized by the Universal Church as a Basilica. On 27 November 2016, the church was officially declared as a basilica by Pope Francis and Mar Joseph Perumthottam, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Changanacherry. This is the first basilica in the archdiocese of Changanasserry, the fourth in the Syro Malabar Church, the ninth in Kerala and the twenty-third basilica in India.
Over the years, the church has undergone significant updates. Initially, there was a small parish hall with about hundred seats. A few years back, a bigger Parish Hall was constructed. The latest, inaugurated on 3 January 2011, has 800+ seats. St. Mary's Theological Center was inaugurated in 2011 as well.

The Mullakkal Bhagavathy Temple, dedicated to the Hindu goddess Rajarajeswari, is a unique architectural masterpiece. It stands out from other temples in Kerala with its style that includes an absent roof over the deity's image and an elephant house.
