Lake Shikotsu, located in southwestern Hokkaido, is a popular recreation area with stunning views of volcanoes. The lake never freezes even in the coldest winters and offers boating, fishing, and sightseeing. There are also hot springs to enjoy.
Was a nice day at Shikotsu Lake. Most of the Snow has melted away from the Winter. Nice view of Mount Eniwa from the Yamasen Railway Bridge 🌉
Was surprised to pay for parking. There's an attendee at the parking lot, to collect payment. 🅿️ use to be free!
Well be back next Winter ❄️ for the Snow Sculpture Festival

This lake is so beautiful. The forest looked gorgeous. It was a cloudy day yet it was amazing. This place is so close to Sapporo. It took us about an hour to get this place from Sapporo. Highly recommend!!

Good place to visit. This lake water is very clear. Very pleasant place. You can enjoy the lake view at a clear day. It is surrounded by five mountain . Mt Fuppushi, Mt tarumae, etc . Here hot springs ♨️♨️ is available nearby. At winter snow festival occasion is there in the month of FEBRUARY. THE MOUNTAIN S surrounded by the lake is volcanic velt. Nearby lots of park is located. You can enjoy with your friends and family. Hotels are available for night stay. Toilet is also available. Very clean place. Summer time boat facilities available. Lots of mountains are there. You can hike mountain also.
From Chitose station you can get route bus towards SHIKOTSU.
If you know driving and have international driving licence, you can rental a car accordingly. That will be cheaper.

Really beautiful lakes with a lot of hiking trails. When we got to the first observatory deck we couldn’t see anything due to the snow, but going down to the lake it cleared up (or maybe positions of the clouds). Very windy in the winter so dress warmly. Recommend at least doing a stop over here to check out the good view, old bridge, and informative visitor center.

Several years ago, I visited Hokkaido with my family. This place is one of my favorite places. On that day, the weather was crispy, and the temperature was comfortable. We took a ship and toured around the beautiful lake. Also, we could enjoy the beauty under the lake. If you have chances to visit, do not miss the chance to tour the fantastic lake.

Lake Shikotsu Ice festival is a must see ! The ice displays and ice caves are amazing and beautiful!
The lake scenery is also breathtaking. They even have local food and snacks to enjoy in the area . A great family affair to do and a great tourist attraction.

Beautiful calm caldera lake with plenty of activities. Restaurants around the lake serve fish from the lake. Water is extremely clean and you can easily see the bottom. It’s a beautiful place to spend overnight for sunset and sunrise. Holidays often brings fireworks which reflects beautifully on the waters

Came during winter in feb. The lake is amazing and so is the surrounding scenery. This lake doesnt freeze over during winter.
The small town here sells snacks and good local dishes, perfect after a stroll around.
There are many parking available but during evenings when the snow festival is available, the parking lots can be crowded. So do come earlier for a spot.
There are many photo spots around the lake for some great photo shoot too.

We came on a late October sunny day. There was a Japanese style drum activity held near the lake. It attracted many local tourists to enjoy a relaxing and chill afternoon.
The fresh air, harmony vibe of the view, smell of BBQ, and rich taste of ice cream are all appealing to me. The only pity is the time we stayed wasn’t long enough. I’m hoping to visit the lake again soon and stay in the lakeside hot spring hotel next time.

Royce Chocolate World at New Chitose Airport is a delightful chocolate factory offering a range of delectable treats and fun activities for visitors of all ages. The Bakery serves up unique creations like chocolate cream croissants and chocolate pies, while the free-access chocolate museum provides insight into the history of this beloved confection.
Royce and chocolate lovers should factor in some time to visit this when arriving or departing from New Chitose airport. There are lots of flavours that are only available here and no where else. The automated manufacturing process is also visible. There is an area that talks about the history of chocolate and origin of Royce. There is also a Royce Cafe for those who can’t have enough of Royce chocolate!

Did not know about this place and was so pleasantly surprised to stumble upon it when leaving Sapporo. LOVE royce and was going to buy heaps on my way home. bought here but realised that its a bit cheaper inside the duty free shop later on. but the plus is that the range is much much bigger here. if u are after more unique items, this would be a good place. for the more standard items, shd buy inside after check in. enjoyed looking at the beautiful displays and the chocolate making machines!

New Chitose airport itself is a tourist attraction! Royce chocolate, which originated from Hokkaido, has the first chocolate factory plus museum in an airport in Japan. Many interesting artefacts related to chocolate can be found at the museum. There are limited editions items available for purchase at the gift shop.

Royce’ is a famous chocolatier from Hokkaido. And they just so happen to have a huge shop in the Chitose airport. There are a fresh pastry selection made with their chocolate, chocolates with kid-friendly themes, and fancier "nama" chocolate, which is what they are best known for.
Given that Royce is famous for their chocolates, I had to pick some up as "omiyage" to give to some friends since I was in town... sadly, I bought nothing for myself other than a delicious pastry. But I definitely recommend you stop by this convenient location and pick up a few things for your friends and family (and yourself, of course).

So much interesting. I watched a video about their cacao farm in Columbia. There is an explanation of how to make chocolate and a real chocolate factory there.

Definitely worth at least a brief visit. A small section of displays about chocolate and old tins and wrappers, a small factory section with clear walls so you can see everything, a large range of chocolates to buy, and a small bakery section

Visited in 2018. First place I stopped by after touching down in Hokkaido and I absolutely love this place. There was a display on how chocolates are made and a bakery with all their chocolate goodies. You can get Royce chocolates here as well to bring back as souvenirs.

New Chitose Airport is a most amazing airport. It is not only somewhere you go through, but also a destination in itself. This Royce Chocolate World is one of the many things that make this wonderful experience.
It is a tiny museum where you can see a brief history of chocolate, including a very nice collection of chocolate packaging and another of printed advertising. There is also a modern demo factory in production behind a huge window.
Royce is a great chocolate and this little exhibition area really makes our Hokkaido trip more memorable

There is mini Royce chocolate factory. Nice to watch and learn the chocolate processing. Shop contain both chocolate and pastry.

A fun place for choc-aholic :) I visited just days before Valentine's day so love and cuteness overdrive.
They also have a bakery as well as chocolate packages that are not available at other smaller kiosks throughout the airport (eg the smaller box 380 yen-ish nama chocolate. I regretted not buying because elsewhere only sell the bigger 700+ yen box).
There's also a small chocolate museum and seethrough chocolate making area.
The Salmon Hometown Chitose Aquarium is a contemporary and compact freshwater exhibit situated on the banks of the Chitose River. The establishment primarily features salmon and other freshwater fish species, with an entrance fee of 600 for adults, which includes access to a feeding demonstration that provides an impressive spectacle. A visit to this aquarium is strongly recommended if you find yourself in the area, as there is also a shop selling high-quality local agricultural produce at reasonable prices.
First of all, this is a place to explore the great salmon lifecycle. A lot of effort has been expanded to make it convenient and it is astounding to be able to watch and witness wild salmon swimming upstream the Chitose river to their original spawning area. Spotting wild salmon from the outdoor river bridge, you would appreciate how marvellous the underwater, riverside aquarium facility is.
I was also taken by how simple and casual they exhibited salmon fries right after hatching which in the wild, would have been quite difficult or impossible to observe close up.
Do walk along the riverside and enjoy the vibes and atmosphere. And yes, there is a good pizza joint inside a nearby good court. The lunch set was good value. Orange cheesecake was a surprising gem. Coffee a let down though but it is a value, set lunch after all.
And yes, there is a fresh water aquarium facility too.

Small-medium size fresh water aquarium. The entrance ticket is 600¥ for an adult. Last entry is 1600. They have the feeding show and it looks spectacular. If in this area, really recommended to visit this place. There is also a shop that sells local agricultural products at very reasonable price and the quality is pretty good.

Close to Chitose city and JR station (15 mins walk) or a short drive. Good to come for a visit to learn more about the salmon and other things. There are some hands on exhibits as well. Good to spend an hour to look around. Outside is nice and beautiful. Not busy during weekdays morning. 800 yen per adult at the entrance. You may save 200 yen if you buy tickets advance via some online stores. We happened to stay at the JR Inn Chitose where we picked up discount coupons too. 200 yen per adult discount. Worthy stopping by and visit.

This is more like a mini aquarium, kids will love to come and pet and feed their hands to fishes. There is a viewing window 3 stories below the complex which you will see the bedrock of the river running above you.
chan joo yeow — Google review
It's pretty fun and clean, but not so big as other, aquariums. it'll probably take 30 minutes to an hour to see everything here. The kids were able to have fun seeing fishes upclose and the floor mapping at the end of the aquarium trail was also pretty fun.
Happy WideMama — Google review
Very nice fresh water aquarium with some non aquatic critters to look at also. They had a really neat display that went to the river so you can see them in their natural environment. Outside there is a nice little park area with a small shrine and you can sometimes catch them harvesting the fish from the river. It was a very interesting experience to watch. Also if you like military jets you might catch some coming in for a landing.

While having breakfast in a Chitose hotel in February 2, 2020, I noticed a sign board of the Aquarium. Since I was in the vicinity, I thought I should visit it before going to Sapporo. And I learned about Salmon’s hometown in Hokkaido.

Good place to go with children. Nice aquarium with plenty of different species but don't expect big sharks or similar. They have some windows with direct insight into the Chitose river. In spring visitors can release young salmon into the river free of charge. Big fun for the many children. Entrance fee for adults regularly 800 ¥ but some hotels have flyers with a 200¥ discount coupon.
Gerd T. — Google review
A fantastic aquarium because there's not too many salmon aquariums in the world and one which has built in windows on an actual river where actual salmon swims upstream during the right season! It is also amazing that we did the behind the scene tour (guided fully in Japanese) with the most amazing part being feeding the fishes in the large pool. There is also nice displays of various fishes and rather educational for both children and adults. Once you head outside, this aquarium is actually located in a popular roadside station that is well known for its salmon restaurant. It also has a large children's playground at the back of the roadside station and of course, don't miss the harvester harvesting fresh entire salmon swimming upstream on the river (in the right season), though it's a little cruel as these salmon's are expending all their energy to head upstream to bred.
Rtexal Tan — Google review
It's a small aquarium but it unique in that it focuses on the salmon spawning in adjacent river and the salmon life cycle. We went in March and got to release some baby salmon in the river. Otherwise it has mostly freshwater exhibits, and the commitment to education and animal welfare is good.

The Michinoeki Salmon Park Chitose is a rest stop located near the river, offering cafes, restrooms, and a grocery store. It is an ideal spot for tourists to have a pitstop before going on road trips. The place has an outstanding food selection that includes ramen, soup curry, and pork don. Additionally, it features a large children's playground and a local grocery store with reasonably priced vegetables.
We are stuck in Citose due snow storm. Decided to visit aquarium. Surprising good. Every year during autumn, Salmon will swim past Citose river to lay eggs. If you are visiting it during autumn, there is a window to see them at River bed in the aquarium. If you visit off season, there is explanation on Salmon lifecycle. A good place to spend about 1.5hrs.. there is a lawson next to it where they sell local produces.

It was magical! We went while the sun was still high and we walked around, ate, and stayed till we got to experience the sculptures being lit up at night.
It’s very cold, but there are heated pathways to melt the snow so that it’s not slippery and easy for anyone to walk or push their baby strollers.
The souvenir shops were closed unfortunately, but the little cafes and the cafeteria served delicious food.
The national park surrounding the lake was covered in several feet of snow so it would be best to wear waterproof, coats, shoes and gloves.
Took the free shuttle from the airport to do last minute shopping.
The food offerings are mainly ramen and a few stalls in a food court area. There were lots of discount offered. Wide range of winter products. If you need winter clothes, feb is the right time to visit.

Want a shopping spree with a big discount? Visit this large outlet in chitose. Important tip, time your visit on New Year's day & you will get the biggest surprise in your shopping experience. Practically all stores here are offering their lucky bag(FUKUBUKURO) which is three or four times the amount inside of it. One advantage here is the less crowded athmosphere unlike the outlets in tokyo & osaka. The only downside is the harsh snowy winter, but transportation is so easily accessible from sapporo station.

It is a fair size outlet mall similar layouts as those in North America. But many stores are closed leaving only limited stores that are open. Not too many people during the day. Some stores are heated. There are a few coffee spots and food places as well. Hope more stores will be opened and more people coming here.

Really waste of time coming here. Visited on 1st June (Thu) 2023.
Had a bit of spare time before returning our rental car, so decided to drive here and check this out. The reviews were correct, this is really a ghost mall, with less than 1/3 of the place being open. For those shops that are open, the items offered are those rejected goods, odd colours and not very cheap either. Was excited to visit the ABC mart, but the shoes selection wasn't great, though the prices are cheaper (though not too much cheaper than in Sapporo). Pls go to the shops in Sapporo for better and newer designs.
The management really needs to review the state of this place to make it more attractive and successful.

First thing you'll see after the airport since this is the closest stores. When we arrived, it seems like only few people go here to shop. There are a lot of stores around but we didn't see much people. That's kind of good for shopping since you don't have to go around a crowded place. Though I'm not quite sure if business wise, if its good to be there. There are also restaurants around to have a quick bite since Sapporo is still around 40 minutes to 1hour drive, depends on where you are going.

Unfortunately in a hurry for our flight but managed to squeeze in a quick butter and grilled corn ramen at No Life No Ramen in Ramen Street at New Chitose Airport (3rd floor away from departure gates).
Great concept, wish we had more time to explore the options but had to settle for a more classic Hokkaido option that had free seating.

Card lounge for both departure and arrival on the day. It’s extremely crowded whereas only soft drinks are served. Airplane and runway view is beautiful.

The Super Lounge is located in New Chitose Airport and can be used free of charge together with a flight ticket if you have a Gold Card or similar. Otherwise, an entrance fee of 1,000 yen plus tax is required. It is open from 7:00-20:30 and is located at the right end of the domestic terminal building on the 3rd floor. The lounge has window seats with a view of the runway, a business room and a drinks bar. Alcohol is served for a fee and showers are not available in the lounge, but can be used at the nearby hot spring facilities. Users are also provided with a discount coupon for the spa. Overall, the lounge is cosy and many window seats are available.

Located in the outskirts of Sapporo, Shikotsu Toya National Park is a place to see active volcanoes and beautiful lakes. The park also has animal attractions such as deer and monkeys, making it a great spot for a day trip.
Wonderful family adventure at Shikotsu Toya National Park , 11 February 2018. We booked a morning snow-shoeing tour with NAC (Niseko Adventure Centre) and we had an exciting excursion up and rolling down the snow-covered mountain. We had a morning tea in the middle of frozen Lake Toya before hiking back to the park's entrance. This is a highly recommended tour people who don't ski!

I received the soft serve ice cream, and it had a strong milk taste, but it had a crunchy, refreshing taste that was unparalleled. At the cafeteria/reception area, there is also a direct sales store where you can buy vegetables from nearby fields at very low prices. I made hotou using the pumpkin I bought here, and it was very creamy and delicious. 100 yen each is a good value. I had the opportunity to try milking cows, and the staff enthusiastically explained to me the characteristics of the dairy cows they were experiencing, and carefully taught me how to milk the cows. There was plenty of time for each person to milk the milk, and unlike other tourist farms, it didn't feel like assembly work, which was great. It was my first time milking a Jersey cow, and it was slightly smaller and cuter than a Holstein cow. We also enjoyed feeding the goats, and although it wasn't very busy as it was a weekday, it was a peaceful and nice place. Cats are also wandering around the venue, which is soothing. New Chitose Airport in Northern Japan is a large and popular airport serving as the main gateway to the Sapporo region. It houses several retail shops selling souvenirs, food, and other items, alongside various restaurants and cafes that serve different cuisines such as ice cream, cakes, chocolate, and ramen from different regions of Japan. Notable attractions within the airport include a movie theater, a children's play area, and a stuffed-animal museum.
It's a very nice airport located about 50 minutes away from central Sapporo by train.

New Chitose Airport is a prominent international airport in Hokkaido. The most captivating area is the market shops near New Chitose Airport JR station (train) and the Domestic terminal. It resembles a bustling marketplace with an array of souvenir shops, restaurants, stores, and fresh seafood. Some shops commence operations at approximately 7:30 AM, with a greater number opening at 8:00 AM, and the market reaches its full capacity by 10:00 AM. The closing time is generally around 8:00 PM.
After passing through security and immigration, a few shops are open for the passengers of the first flight. You can find various items to purchase, such as cosmetics, seafood, and souvenirs. However, the restaurants inside the airport typically open later, around 10 am.

A very pretty airport. Not as busy as other airports that we had been to but it is rather huge.
The airport itself is rather spacious and great for big crowds. While it is big, there will be times when one needs to slow down. Cafe or shops selling food doesnt seem to be open. We love for a good coffee but noted that its too early for them to open.
We still give 5 star rating regardless of the coffee, as the airport is very pretty and clean. No matter which airport, we appreciate and love a clean airport.. 🤗

Unbelievable this happened inside the international departure area (after customs check)
On 17 September 2023, 4.45pm, all restaurants are closed except for the one and only beef restaurant (I do not consume beef) is open. I have requested for an exit from the departure area to outside for food as I still have 3 hours ahead before the flight and was declined. The best part is, she told me there's an instant noodle available at the corner of the shop and when I walked there, I was told there is no hot water and chopsticks.
Airport information counter does not have a feedback form neither and I could not locate an email address to email them hence, I'm ranting here.
What could have done is airport staffs should put a sign before check in that the restaurants are closed. I do not expect this to happen in Japan and yet it did on my first time here in Hokkaido airport.

New Chitose Airport is a real treat for anyone passing through! Once you step inside, you'll be greeted by a plethora of food stalls and gift shops, offering a wide variety of goodies to indulge in.
The standout feature of the airport is definitely the abundance of gift shops, where you'll find a ton of cakes and sweets made from Hokkaido's famous milk. From intricately designed cakes to creamy milk candies, there's something for everyone's sweet tooth. Plus, the packaging is so charming, making these treats perfect for souvenirs or gifts.
And let's not forget about the snacks! There's an impressive selection of snacks available, ranging from Japanese rice crackers to crispy potato chips. What makes them even better is that they all have that distinct milky flavor characteristic of Hokkaido, making them absolutely irresistible.
Despite being an airport, New Chitose has a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The staff are friendly and helpful, and you'll feel right at home as you explore all the culinary delights the airport has to offer.
Overall, New Chitose Airport is more than just a transit point—it's a destination in itself. Whether you're in the mood for some delicious snacks or looking for the perfect gift to take home, you'll find everything you need and more at this bustling airport.

The day we arrived was very crowded even though it was New Year's Day. Looking at the number of foreigners, it feels like things have completely returned to before the coronavirus. It's been a warm New Year this year, and it's rare to see a year with so little snow.
The JR station is directly connected to the basement of the terminal building, making it very accessible, but the airport line is a single track, so its capacity is already running low. There seems to be a plan to make it double track, but I think that will be a long way off. Actually, it would be the best access if it was connected to Sapporo Station by Shinkansen, but I don't think JR would send salt to the enemy...
I think this is due to the fact that Hokkaido can almost only be accessed by air, but it is by far the largest regional airport. It's definitely bigger than Chubu Centrair International Airport and feels bigger than Kansai International Airport.
It has a wide selection of Hokkaido souvenirs, from seafood to sweets, and also has directly managed shops from Lloyd's and Calbee. Each store has products that are only available at their own stores, and especially at Calbee, they make freshly fried potato chips on the spot, and there was a line even before 9am.
A new factory for semiconductor manufacturer Lapidus was under construction near the airport, and many tower cranes were lined up. Once this is in operation, I think it will become even more crowded.

There is a Lawson inside and overall pricing after checkin are very reasonable. Truly a refreshing experience from most other airports where they charge you high prices on everything. First time in Hokkaido! New Chitose airport gave me great first impression. You can walk in arouns for many hours without getting tired, so much variety of restaurants and shops while everything is constantly clean and organized.
They even sells fresh produces like Hokkaido’s vegetables and seafood, king crabs. It’s like a huge mall plus morning market and entertainment all in one inside this airport. And I thought Narita was already impressive.
Overall, everything operate efficiently quick. Security check, customs, luggages pick up. All done within 10 minutes. But it’s during autumn, not as many travelers around. So it was cool to see semi-quiet vibes of New Chitose.
I regret for not spend more time shopping, eating around here on my arrival. Because my departure flight 7 days later is very early in the morning. Literally 98% of shops are not yet opened. Rookie mistake on my part but I’ll definitely be back to Hokkaido again!
Looking forward to step foot in this fantastic airport soon.

The airport is very nice.
But be careful with airlines.
JAL and ANA are major domestic airlines, so they have a lot of flexibility and consideration. The most important thing is the number of aircraft you own.
Please be careful when using LCC.
Cheap prices are great, but the probability of flight cancellations is definitely higher than with major airlines.
It is also possible to change flights, but when there are only a few aircraft, it is difficult to secure a seat due to competition. I think everyone has their own budget and schedule, but it's best to consider them carefully.
If you jump on something just because it's cheap, you may end up paying a higher price later.
After all, New Chitose Airport is a very fine and wonderful airport. We recommend that you carefully consider the airlines that take off and land at this airport.

Already my most favourite airport in Japan. All the Hokkaido's signature souvenirs are being sold here at the same price as you buy anywhere else in the region. There are also restaurants, cafes, food court, ramen dojyo, museum, exhibition, playland, and many more for you to enjoy until the last minute you have to board the plane.
It's best for you to book late afternoon or even evening flight so that you have a reasonable time to shop here. Thumbs up!

There is a lot to do at this airport pre- security. It is a good place to buy souvenirs as there are so many choices.
After security, the food options were quite limited so eat beforehand.
If you are taking the JR train, remember to get reserved seats as it is a long ride. After getting to the airport, there isn't too much walking to get to the main area.
If you are doing a domestic flight and have baggage to check, come extra early. I had to drop off bags at JAL, and the line was forming outside the line divider/ crowd control post/ rope barrier.

Beautiful bridge for taking photos near lake shikotsuko and the ice festival nearby. We came during winter so there weren't many people here.

Beautiful bridge that was relatively recently renovated. A nice accent to the other lush green and greenish blue backdrop of the caldera. Great place for photos. If you staying overnight. Visit during early and late hours to avoid the tourists.

A beautiful bridge in the area that very easily becomes the centre of attention.
Though it is a man made structure, it integrates seamlessly into the beautiful nature that surrounds it.
At night time when different colors of light shine on it, it's like a lady wearing a beautiful night gown, showing another side of her beauty.

The shop explained the wine carefully. All of the wines we have are reasonably priced and not very deep, but I think we can recommend them for table wines. Haskap wine can also be bought at New Chitose Airport, but reduced wine for locals is only available here.

The two wineries I visited earlier had disappointing results, so I didn't have high expectations for this either, but I was able to taste the potential of Hokkaido wine. I bought the cheapest Pinot Noir, and it had an elegant taste suitable for women, and I enjoyed the aroma. There were some classes that cost more than 5,000 yen, but the taste is probably better than that. (There were some adults who bought about 5 luxury class bottles.) However, in terms of cost performance, it cannot be denied that they are not even close to the imported ones. Why is it that even though import duties are imposed and the products are transported for a long time? At the very least, unless the price is set at the same level as sake, it will be difficult to purchase wine for everyday drinking.

The vineyard is located in Yoichi, so there is only a stone warehouse in the corner of a residential area. Next door is Seicomart. The parking lot is large.
I went in November 2021, and there was a tasting of Kellner and Haskap.

We also sell original wine chocolates.
