The Oku Iya Ni-ju Kazura-bashi is a beautiful wooden footbridge over the river that can be reached by a self-propelled, two seater cable cart. It is located in a forested valley far from the crowds and tour buses. Traveling Japan by motorcycle came to this wonderful natural bridge and travelers were anxious about stepping on it but they still ran across it anyway.
Saw this sightseeing place in a guidebook and upon arriving there, it was more amazing in person than the guidebook.
There is a charge to cross the bridge, around 500 yen~ but they take PayPay surprisingly so payment shouldn't be an issue.
The river flowing at the bottom is marvelous and has tiny tadpoles swimming in it. You'll also find a small waterfall at the bottom corner which is amazing in its own beauty.
Be wary of the horseflies that will bite you. Make sure to cover yourself up.

Year after year, it is said that the quail that is used as the material for the bridge is getting less and less. It is said that even now, thin quails are twisted together to make them thicker. By the way, the main body of the bridge is suspended by steel wires, so there is no longer a real Kazura Bridge in a pure sense.
I don't care about such things, but when I cross, I feel a lot of fear. In particular, the 5m crossing is the scariest. But you'll get used to it.
Unfortunately, it rained a lot that day and the river was rough. But how beautiful this water is. It was very good.
If you go up a little upstream, there is a place where you can get down to the riverbed. It's pretty good.
It seems that before Corona, it was very crowded with foreign tourists, and it was a sight to cross the bridge in two lines. There were almost no foreign tourists at the time, so I had plenty of time to enjoy the scenery while crossing.

Those were nice experience and it is a good place to take some pictures. The bridge was not as dangerous as it looks, where there are steel support on the existing bridge.

I came here on the recommendation of someone from Tokushima. I went by rental car from Takamatsu Airport, but it takes less than 2 hours. However, there is also the famous Oboke and Koboke on the way, so I don't think you will get bored. It was a Sunday, so there were quite a few people, but it wasn't too crowded. It costs 550 yen to cross the bridge. When you actually cross it, it shakes as it is, and the bottom is empty, so I wonder if it's a thrill. There are waterfalls in the area, and you can go down to the riverbed, so you can enjoy nature and scenery. Since it is a tourist spot, there is no need to worry about parking, eating and drinking. The parking lot varies from 300 yen to 500 yen, but it's a small difference, so I don't think you need to worry about it. If you try to go by public transportation, it is a little difficult to access, so you need to check in advance.

Not too sure what's too interesting about the bridge. There's a fee of 550yen to cross the bridge, which seemed to be a 1-2min experience catered towards tourists rather than explaining its significance. We didn't cross the bridge but explored the waterfall and walked along the river beside it, which was nice.

Considering it’s made by vines and re-made once in 3 years, it’s worth visiting even with ¥550 fee (payable by cash or PayPay)
However, it’s a bit disappointing that it’s a popular place and there are so many tourists, so it’s not how it looks on ads or Instagram

This one is probably the most famous vine bridge in the area, but in my opinion, it doesn't look like it's worth crossing (especially if you're afraid of heights). There's a cafe in front of it that is indeed worth visiting, but I wouldn't consider it mandatory to come to this bridge.

Parked in the closest parking lot. (400 yen) It's next to the cafe. Kazurabashi has JAF discount. You can cross while enjoying the thrill. I crossed slowly while looking at the flow of the river and the trees below. I could see that the Kazura was wrapped around the wire, and I thought it wouldn't fall off. Biwa Falls nearby is also recommended.

This is one of the 3 remaining vine bridges, the longest and most challenging, and the most visited. We were quite scare when we saw that there were gaps throughout the bridge while we were crossing. However, we mindfully crossed the bridge and at the end we took photos of us achieving the feat.

What an experience walking through the vine bridge! Well, it’s a little bit scary as the bridge is quite high from the rocky river and the planks of the footing are not so tightly placed. You would wonder how people built such a gorgeous bridge in the old days. And they had to travel to and fro every day!

In the evening of 26 March 2023, my wife and I finally found this vine bridge. We had to park the car at a carpark nearby before appreciating it. It was dramatically different from other bridges we saw earlier in the vicinity. We initially thought it was closed to the public. We later found that we should have come while the bridge was open to feel it rather than to see it!

Stopped by the famous vine bridge in Iya Valley - Incredible how they rebuild it every 3 years - by trimming vines which helps keep the forest healthy, they can maintain the traditional practice.
This creates jobs and generates income for the local economy by bringing visitors to cross this bridge. They then wander around the area, see the waterfall, other nearby tourist attractions, buy local foods and souvenirs and pay for parking.
Check out the souvenir shop up the hill for great local products like locally grown Awa-tea, local sake, soba noodles and other products. The dango 🍡 mochi on a stick is also a delicious and filling vegan snack 😋
It was fun (and a bit scary) to cross the vine bridge - so many great views along the way too!

This bridge is so scary! I’m not sure why they don’t make you sign a waiver before crossing it. There are gaps in the boards, so only cross if you are physically able and have good balance. It’s 500 yen to cross per person.
The Oku-Iya Double Vine Bridge is a suspension bridge constructed from twisted branches and wooden slats that spans a rocky stream deep in the forest. The bridge is an impressive example of how people in ancient times utilized natural materials to overcome obstacles. Although it is closed during the winter months, visitors can still enjoy the experience by driving to the location. The bridge has been reinforced, making it safe for tourists to visit and appreciate a glimpse into the past.
There were once 13 vine bridges but there are only 3 left now. To cross the bridges, one has to purchase a 550 yen ticket. After going down the stairs, we crossed the first bridge, which is wider and longer than the other vine bridge. There were not many visitors here as it is rather far off. We saw that strong ropes have been tied to the side if the bridge to reinforce the fragile, old vine bridge. While crossing the bridge, we did stop to look at the river below and also took photos

Although technically this place is closed in the winter, including late March, it may be possible for people to walk by the sign and go check out the bridges anyway. Of course that wouldn't be recommended, and certainly the restrooms are locked in the offseason.

The place was not easy to go because it was inside a mountain area. Part of the road in this area was narrow and only allowed one car to pass through. The condition of the road was quite raw with nothing on the roadside, which might not be suitable for inexperienced drivers. During winter time, it was closed till the end of March. Parking was free. Shop and eateries were operating here but closed in winter as well.

One of the worst tourist traps on the island. These are IRON WIRE bridges, with some vines thrown (!) over them in a feeble attempt to cover up the real bridge. After you pay and walk down there is a sign telling you the "wooden monkey" is out of order. Looking at the quality of the sign that monkey has been out of order for at least 5 years. There is no discount and no mention of the monkey being unavailable. On the contrary: the cablecar is very well drawn on all maps.
All in all: leave it be. It's not worth the drive.

Wow! Amazing location for hike and sight seeing! The bridge is really wabbly and the gap is enough to slip your food sideways. That's what makes it exciting. However, be careful when crossing the bridge.

If you're around the area I think it's not a bad idea to come to these bridges. There's a high one and a lower one. Although if you're afraid of heights both are scary. You can go however to the river's level and see them from below, which is a nice view. It's only 500 yen to cross them both.
Nagoro "Scarecrow" Village, also known as Kakashi-no-Sato, is a unique and eerie destination located in the last village of Iya. The drive to this isolated village can be time-consuming but is worth it for the experience it offers. With over 180 scarecrows scattered throughout the area, visitors will encounter these lifelike figures engaged in various activities such as farming and chatting.
This is the most amazing place, with over 300 "scarecrows"/dummies made to represent a community that no longer exists. All the young people left the town many years ago and there is only a small number of adults living there now. One lady has made it her mission to recreate a community representing all types of people, including school children. We were fortunate to meet her that day as she is not always there

Equal parts fascinating, touching and creepy, the scarecrow village is an homage to the former residents of this now-near-deserted mountain village. The mountain roads make it more than a little hair-raising to get to, though the trip was definitely worth the trouble.

Boy oh boy, what do I write about this one!?
For starters we arrived in the cold rain in the night, so we found shelter somewhere nearby, and did some exploring of the village in the night! This was a very spooky experience for the first time, seeing and the scare crow mannequins, around the place not knowing where to look next!
In the morning, still raining and still quite cold, we made some great memories here, meeting some other local people, getting to see the village in the day and meeting the scarecrow mother herself! Being semi decent at japanese, we where able to really converse and talk about our lives and where we have travelled and the story behind scarecrow Village, and the process behind it.
We where invited to the first room of her little house on the hill and got to drink some warm tea, and where treated to some biscuits. (She was very worried about us, with barely any rain protection, and it being quite chilly!) Here we conversed about everything and got to meet the father of scare crow village aswell!
I promised that I would come back here one day in my travels with her, and she wrote a message to me in my henro book! Something I can't quite read but it still means a lot to me! 😆
Thank you so much, and for all of those travelling the area, it really is a must!

Super cool and super creepy. It was awesome meeting "James May" and the lady that created them. Wandering the small town and school is a fun sort of uncomfortable experience. The road to get there is also a fun uncomfortable experience; it is very narrow, very windy, and often has huge trucks coming the other way that you have to back up for. Overall a great experience that I likely won't be doing again!

More than fascination / creepiness, I felt a feeling of sadness after leaving the village. The schools, complexes and houses that were filled with dolls reflects the rapid de-population of this area to bigger cities I assume, which is a sad 21st century reality. The school which housed a multi-purpose complex described the different phases of lives people went through, from attending school, having weddings to old people sitting at the entrances. It invokes a sense of nostalgia and sadness, which I assume are the emotions felt by the producer of the dolls who resides here. This area seems extremely inaccessible without a car.

This village is... I don't know. A concept between scary, weird, peaceful...
You'll see dozens of scarecrows on the way to the "village center". Placed where normally humans do stuff.
An entire room has been filled with "not-people" reading, sleeping or talking among each other.
The most weird part is the school.
Everything is clean, and well kept by the locals, but seeing the building, with shadows at the windows watching outside, and no other sound than the river and the cicadas is unsettling.
Kudos to those who maintain this place.

You can't just drive to this village and expect that the village itself will blow you away. There's a fair amount of history in the area, and there are some wonderful hikes, plus some great view points and a couple of famous bridges, but you need to find where those are. So as an overall ranking for the village, I can't rank it highly, but individual attractions within the village are really neat. Bear in mind that the roads here are very slow, so even though something looks close by kilometers, you don't want to try to be rushing to go anywhere, and there aren't many gas stations, so fill up when you have a chance. Bring your own water and snacks just in case you can't find anything along the way, because there are only a few shops.

I think it is one of the most well-known temples in Shikoku, but it is actually not designated as one of the 88 sacred sites in Shikoku. Be careful not to confuse this place, as Unbenji, the 66th temple in Shikoku, is nearby and also just up the ropeway.
The grounds are quite large, and there are many impressive buildings. It's strange that there aren't 88 locations in Shikoku.
On the other hand, if you want to go around the area, there are a lot of stairs as it is located on top of a mountain.
Also, even if you take the ropeway, there is virtually no other place you can go to other than here, so although the view is nice, the cost performance is not good.

It is said that in 828 (Tencho 5), Kobo Daishi, who was on a pilgrimage to Shikoku, climbed the mountain feeling spiritual energy.

This deity is not only the principal image of Hashizo-ji Temple, but also the object of worship, and the history of the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism, where both God and Buddha were enshrined in the same way, is clearly preserved.
There is a Kannon-do hall on the right side of the main shrine.
It is said to be a building from the early Edo period, and is the oldest building in Hashizoji Temple.

10/10. We drove up from Koboke area using Maps, turning right just before Iyaguchi Station and winding up. The drive was super stunning through the nature and fairly well sign posted given the remoteness. A narrow road but on a Wednesday there was noone else around (there are a few ways to get up and seems from the north is more popular/wider road.)
The marshland was stunning. Access to the boardwalk was direct from the parking lot so it's very easy. You can take a few different routes across the area. Recommend 30 mins - 1h.

Mount Tsurugi, also known as Tsurugisan, is a lush 1955m-high mountain located at the remote end of Iya Valley in the Shikoku region of Japan. The Iya River originates from its summit, creating steep banks on both sides of the valley. Visitors can take a chair lift from Minokoshi to reach the summit boardwalks and a Shinto shrine.
Mount Tsurugi is situated in the Shikoku region (the spiritual peak of mountain worship) Because of time restrictions took the chair lift up and enjoyed the scenic ride. I then walked from the lift ramp to the summit in less than 30 minutes, one needs to be in a fairly good condition otherwise it can be rather taxing.
Stayed there and walked around the summit for about 15 minutes, and then ran back down in under 20 minutes. For me it turned out to be a very good high ground training. The views are stunning and for the equipped serious hiker, Mount Tsurugi can be a good starting point to explore the rest of the mountain range.

If you are a hiker you can hike all the way up but there’s still a considerable hike at the top after the chair lift 1050yen each way. Get there early to get a car park otherwise you will have to park illegally on the road. Stunning views from the top when the cloud clears. Highly recommend!

Scenic chair lift provides an easy and scenic way to the top station. However there is still another long and arduous walk up a steep slope to the peak. Not for those who are not physically in good shape.

We took the chairlift up/down and hiked to the top. We then took a different loop walk down and in total hiked for 2.5hrs.

There is very simple chair lift (¥1900 for round trip) that takes you to mid way. Takes abt 15min to the hiking point. There is also hiking route to walk up which will take abt 30-40min if u wanna skip the lift. From the lift station, there are three different hike route to the top. 40min, 60min and 120min. I took 40min steep way up and took 120min scenic route back down. The 120min route was really nice with view. I recommend that route if the weather was nice. Definitely don’t do it if the weather is bad as it is really narrow hiking way on the side of steep hill. It’s pretty easy hike route overall.

Went there on a cloudy day. We didn’t get any view as expected but just wanted to check out this one from the hiking list. Free parking. It was pouring for hours while going up and coming down. Was quite challenging and fun going down for 2 hours through mud and water. We didn’t carry any jacket and it wasn’t too cold at the top.

Accessible and somewhat touristy mountain top, but the views a stunning and it’s a great access point to the rest of the mountain range. If you’re serious about hiking I would not linger too long here but rather continue over to the next peak for even greater views and fewer crowds.
Would prioritize mt Miune over Tsurigi if having to choose

Very developed and accessible. With huts, shops, a rope way etc...so not very beautiful in itself, but perfect if you combine it with hikes into other directions. There are lots of other mountains and routes in this area, which are probably all more beautiful than Tsurugi itself.
