The Ainokura Gassho-zukuri Village is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in a picturesque mountain village in Japan. The village features traditional Gassho-style houses that have been preserved from the Edo period. These houses retain their original shape on the outside but are modernized on the inside, allowing residents to live a contemporary lifestyle while maintaining their cultural heritage.
An absolute mountain fairytale land. The landscape is amazing. It’s exactly what I imagine when I think of an old small mountain village in Japan. It’s so beautiful and all the old buildings are a wonder. People actually still live here! About 50.
If you have the opportunity, 100% come here and stay the night in one of the traditional houses and eat the local food
Not a lot of English speakers but really you don’t need to use it. They have maps and everything all in English

駐車場横からエレベーターに乗り下のトンネルを潜ると相倉集落が見えて来ました。

I had been to Shirakawa-go before, but this time I visited Ainokura village.
The parking fee was 500 yen.
Take the elevator from the side of the parking lot and go through the tunnel below, and you will see Ainokura Village.
It had a feeling of daily life, and the atmosphere was different from Shirakawa-go, which was very nice.
There are restaurants, souvenir shops, cafes, etc. in the village, so please stop by and have a look.

We inserted a visit to Kanazawa in our tour of Japan, between Tokyo and Kyoto since it is easily reachable by Shinkansen and include a lot of historical town and villages.
As part of the visit, we booked a one day bus tour from Kanazawa to Shirakawa-go, Takayama and Gokayama.
From Shirakawa-go, it took about 1 hour to reach Ainokura. As soon as we arrived we went to the observatory to take scenic photographs. We then had about 30 minutes to visit the village but this was not enough so plan at least 2 hours if possible.

A village with rich heritage. Ainokura is much smaller and less crowded than the popular Shirakawa-go. If you prefer less crowd, this is a good place to go in addition to Shirakawa-go. Its about 50 minutes bus ride from Ainokura to Shirakawa-go.These houses are really amazing to look at when up close. A must visit!!

There was still a lot of snow left and it was very atmospheric. However, this year there was very little snow. Actually, I wanted to take a picture of the whole view from the top, but there is still a lot of snow left, so I can't climb to the top unless I borrow boots. I was able to take a good picture because there are rustic and nice gassho-zukuri houses scattered around. I paid the entrance fee and was able to see the inside, but the inside of the house smoked in the hearth was very impressive, and it was very nice to hear the story.

Really amazing place to visit. There are restrooms (toilets), and an information centre where you can rent boots and jackets if you don't have the right gear. It was snowing heavily when we visited in late December 2022 which added to the magic. The village closes to tourism at 5, but it was already dark before then.

This place is part of the UNSECO. It is a small village. There are still people living in the houses. We were given 40mins here. There are not many things here. Since it is a small village. However, what I appreciate most is how they preserved such expensive houses. Not easy to maintain since the raw materials are difficult to obtain.

This village is much quieter than Ogimachi Village likely because it is not quite as convenient to reach, especially in winter. The village is prettier than Ogimachi but will only take about 1 hour to visit at a slow pace. Make sure to go to the viewpoint.

500 yen for parking. A really picturesque village that is inhabited, hence you will see all the creatures comfort outside of the old architecture ( has, weather heater, electricity lines etc) which is a great juxtaposition of living with current times. The previous emperor has stayed in this village before while on a holiday and I can understand why.
The lovely shrine is also worth a visit as it has really old cedars.
Do not miss walking up to the best viewpoint which is located beside the carpark before leaving (first photo)!

Small and remote village. Better alternative for anyone who wants to visit Shirakawa-go but prefer more private experience. Not crowded
Gokayama, located in the Shogawa River Valley, is a collection of remote villages that offer breathtaking views. Within this region lie two World Heritage sites - Ainokura and Suganuma. Both sites boast ancient gassho-style houses that have been converted into minshuku (Japanese B&Bs) and folk museums. The area surrounding the winding Shō River is home to various Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples.
The Suganuma Gassho-zukuri Village is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that features well-preserved Gassho-zukuri farmhouses from the Edo period. The village is located in the Gokayama region of Kanazawa Prefecture, and it is a popular destination for tourists who come to see the beautiful scenery and historic architecture.
Suganuma is one of the three World Heritage sites of gassho style houses. The other two sites are Ainokura (just east of Suganuma) and Shirakawago in Gifu. Beautiful scenery with gassho style houses and mountains in serenity.

Quiet and peaceful village, not very touristy and can be reached by Kaetsuno bus. There’s a coined-base locker at bus stop so you can drop your bags there with $100. In winter there will be more interesting spot here. This place looks like Shirakawago but smaller area. The parking area was 500¥ and you will guided to use elevator facilities for going to Suganuma village or Gokayama village. Recommended place to visit.

Small folk village. Parking costs something like 500 yen. Not much to see. Much smaller than other folk villages in the region. Take the elevator down after paying for the parking. Was raining while we were visiting and some shops were closed. Imagine it would be beautiful in the winter, but we went in May. Good for pit stop if it’s along your route (which it was for us); skip it otherwise. Not worth a detour.

We happened to get there just as he was starting the fire in the morning, so he chatted with us at length about the history of the building and the area.
Also sang a traditional song for us and demonstrated several traditional instruments from the area.
The house has been in his family for generations and he grew up in it.
The upper floors are chock full of items his family used in their daily lives.
Very cool to see the internal structure of a designated national cultural treasure.
Note that the only heat is from the fire on the first floor and shoes are not allowed inside: wear warm socks in winter!

The largest kassho house. Definitely the highlight of our trip that we didn't expect. We stayed at Akao-kan and was looking for something to sightseeing. It was Thursday which is their day-off unfortunately.
However, the owner saw us and called us in. I'm so grateful they opened for us. There was a small private group tour in the same morning as well so maybe that's why they didn't mind us.
There were 2 owners, a lady and an old man. They both can speak English and I think the lady is pretty good at it too. They took great care of us, told the story of the kassho, very much in detail. They also perform a traditional dance and song for us too.
You can climb up to see the upper floors too, be mindful not to step in the forbidden area. There were lots of old tool to see.

5 stars for the Shirakawago, Suganuma and Ainokura villages - they were absolutely lovely.
But I am here to leave feedback for the Kaetsuno World Heritage bus - which I'd leave 2 stars for. This is the bus that takes visitors in between the villages.
On 18 Jan 2024, we started waiting at the Ainokura-guchi bus stop from 9.45am for the 10.00am bus bound for Shin Takaoka. We never saw the Kaetsuno bus come; and we stood outside the bus stop waiting 50 minutes till 10.35am in sub-zero freezing temperatures. Along the way we saw a green bus at 10.10am but the bus driver told us he was not bound for Shin Takaoka. Fortunately we got help from our Ainokura innkeeper who gave us a lift to the nearest train station, if not we would have been left in the freezing cold for much longer.
The two-day Kaetsuno bus pass I bought was underutilized as a result too.
I have always trusted the efficiency and punctuality of Japan's transport system so this was an unexpected and disappointing situation.

A facility that introduces the Johana Hikiyama Festival. When you enter the museum, you will watch a 20-minute introductory video about the festival, which you should watch if you have time. You can understand the festival even if you have no knowledge of the Hikiyama Festival. After watching the video, you can see the actual Hikiyama on display. It's nice that it gets dark after a certain amount of time and the evening festival is recreated.

Hikiyama is said to be held from morning until night, but in 2022 it will only be held in the afternoon. Hikiyama floats are exquisitely designed and worth seeing. This festival has been designated as an intangible cultural property because it is a festival unlike any other, such as mountain lodges displaying statues of gods in their homes. As of June 2022, the building is undergoing repairs, so be careful as it may be a little difficult to find.

It's about a 10-minute walk from Johana Station, and just a few minutes from Zentokuji Temple, which is considered to be Johana's most famous spot. Although the scale is not very large, the intricate carvings that decorate the Hikiyama floats lined up in a row are spectacular. The exhibition method also shows some ingenuity, such as periodically dimming the lights to recreate the atmosphere of a festival night.
It's a shame that the exhibit is behind glass and you can't get a bird's-eye view of the Hikiyama floats, but it's a facility that would be a waste if you visit the castle grounds. Johana is also a transit point to the gassho-zukuri villages of Ainokura, Gokayama, and Shirakawa-go, which are designated as World Heritage Sites, so we recommend visiting them in conjunction with these.

Swimming pool was... OK..., but you may get disappointed if you think of very huge and nice one inspired by their website. However, the staff there in pool area was very nice and friendly. You can exercise in heated pool with some ingredients from hot spring (mixed with normal water).
Onsen (hot spring) was... Seemed like very normal Sento (public bath). Nothing special.
The main front desk of the main building... unfriendly staff. Lobby area seemed a little gorgeous and nice.
The restaurant... atmosphere was nice. I chose Pork dish and... Just very very normal taste...not like hotel taste. Very disappointed. Though, the chestnut cake was nice with good sweet feeling.
There is sunflower garden behind the main building.
There is a lake nearby and you can walk around the lake. About 4km?
Bouldering facility was there, about 2 minutes walk from the main building.

Excellent for a relaxing break. The baths are great, dinner excellent, breakfast adequate, rooms comfortable, location quiet and beautiful.
The nearby lake/playground are great for walks and kids, and the French restaurant across the way is a hidden gem.

Relaxing place of stay. Excellent if you drive and planned to go gassho houses sightseeing which is just 30 mins driving distance away. Onsen is ok too.
