Oirase Gorge is a picturesque park known for its autumn leaves, hiking trails through wooded areas and waterfalls. Visitors can reach this spot by taking the bus from Yasumiya JR Bus Towadako and stopping at Ishigedo. It is recommended to take the bus instead of driving due to heavy traffic congestion caused by irresponsible parking behavior of some drivers. The gorge offers stunning views of natural beauty that attract many visitors who come to enjoy the peaceful surroundings on weekdays as well as weekends.
It is a great place. The river is mostly gentle and peaceful. The fall color is mostly yellow and brown, I can’t see red. I used to see red in the pictures of 奥入瀬エリア. Don’t know where and when to see some red here. Maybe someone can explain to me. In general, this is a beautiful river, giving me a sense of calm and serenity. A great place to take photos and videos.

The gorge itself was great, and luckily when I went the autumn colours was in full swing. I visited by taking the bus from Yasumiya JR Bus Towadako and stopped at Ishigedo as suggested by the staff in the hotel. He mentioned that it was prettier to walk up towards the lake than from the lake.
During my visit they were encouraging people to take the bus instead of taking their own cars to the gorge to limit congestion. Once I visited I understood why. Despite being a weekday there were lots of cars and some of the drivers would just stop their cars wherever they please to take pictures, making it dangerous for other drivers to pass.
If you are visiting, please take the bus or park responsibly.

Absolutely beautiful in the fall, I highly recommend going if you want a nice relaxing walk in nature.

There's a couple of very scenic points along the walking trail, but this is all ruined by the fact that you have to walk along a rather busy road most of the time. Probably due to the poor public transport in this area. If you're after taking some nice pictures, this may be a place for you, but don't expect a pleasant walk.

Really nice place to take a walk. Feels like you are walking in a terrarium !
It is can be a long walk, so do arm yourself with a backpack with water and light bites
Please also bring own trashbag to keep your trash and dispose later

It's a wonderful experience, when drove along the Oirase, the end of Winter, Feb 2024,the mesmerising scenery is so wonderful.

This was beautiful. The road along the river has several places with parking for a few cars. If you're lucky, someone is leaving when you arrive. I walked about 90 min round trip. My dogs loved walking there and splashing a little bit in the water. It may be hot if you go in the summer, but I think the water would be refreshing. It was nice with the autumn leaves.

Oirase gorge is one of our favorite places in all of Japan. We’ve visited the gore two summers in a row! There has never been a greener place! The trees, the moss, wow! The forest and river are beautiful and even in the rain, this is a must see. We park at the northern parking area near the public restroom when we visit and start our walk from there. If you visit, take your time. This is not a 15 minute stop. Walk all the way, take pictures, listen to the river. It’s worth it.

Beautiful nature. Flowing, serene gorge spanning several kilometres. A couple of rest stops along the way. Hiking along the gorge made easy with a maintained pathway.

Absolutely beautiful!! It’s breathtaking.
Photos taken at the end of October 2021.
Such a peaceful place to be. The ray of the sunshine makes the autumn leaves even more colorful and beautiful.
There is a pathway for hikers all the way - which I strongly recommend.
The day I visited was weekend and it was very crowded. The street is quite narrow.
Aaaand, there aren’t proper parkings along the way. (I saw some parking spots but they seemed to be reserved for the tourist buses)
It was sad to see some drivers just park the cars randomly on the street that makes other cars difficult to drive (actually making traffic jams) :(
You can park the car near the Lake Towada (for free) during the busy season or you can perhaps use the parking area if not during the peak season.
The Towada Art Center is an avant-garde museum showcasing contemporary art and featuring quirky outdoor installations, as well as a complex of galleries. It's a great family-friendly destination in the area, with impressive blue LED light displays during winter that need to be seen in person for full appreciation. The museum hosts diverse artists from around the globe, offering amusing works for those who enjoy humorous art pieces. However, public transportation may not be very convenient or time-efficient; driving oneself would be more ideal.
What a great way to spend an afternoon. Visiting is a thought provoking, tactile, auditory, and visual experience that will capture your imagination. I left with a new appreciation for modern art. Permanent and special exhibits were simply amazing as is the public art surrounding the museum. There are surprises around every corner. In true Japanese style the hospitality was top notch. Parking is validated with admission and located a few blocks away. If you’re planning a trip to Aomori I definitely recommend planning a couple hours to visit. Leave the young kids at home, this one’s for grown ups.

High admission fee but it worths it if you are interested in modern art. Parking is free (covered by the admission fee). It takes approximately an hour to visit, and don't forget there are also a few large art objects outside and on the other side of the road

Lovely and interesting displays. Inexpensive as well. Recommend taking advantage of the free listening devices for entire visit, including ones outside & across street.

This place is great for the family, there aren’t a ton of awesome options in the area but this spot is worth the visit.
During the winter you can see the blue LED lights displays with works of art among them. The pictures don’t do it justice you must see them!
The museum itself is fun and there’s another one across the street you should check out too.

The compound has several pieces outdoors, and even the lobby, cafe and gift-shop are decorated with murals and installations.
Kumoi no taki is one of the main waterfalls along Oirase Stream. I think it is one of the tallest waterfalls located along the Oirase Stream.
I was there with my relatives and colleagues in April 2016, July 2017 and lately April 2019.
It is one of the waterfalls easily accessible by the roadside, usually tourist or locals will alighted from the buses or cars to take pictures or to pose for pictures.
It is one of the popular waterfalls and I think you will not missed it as you travel from Choshi Otaki falls downstream to the Oirase Keiryu Museum.

The best of the falls along the Oirase gorge. With a small alcove for parking. I wish I had my DSLR, tripod and filters for some amazing photos any season. Just a 10m walk but you can see the falls from the road, just drive slowly.

Its been spring now. So the snow started to melt down and we got the chance to visit this place. While we are heading to Lake Towada, we saw this wonderful falls along the road. It looks so enchanting. Its still cold and windy but the scenery seems so dramatic. Its noce to take pictures here

Its looks very beautiful in Autumn. There are three floors on the waterfall and the water falls from the 20 meter height. You can reach there by using JR bus bound to lake Towada either from Hachinohe station and Aomori station
The Towada Shrine is a serene and picturesque Shinto shrine situated in a wooded area just a short walk down a path. It is located approximately 500m from the main road and offers visitors several opportunities to pause and appreciate its beauty, including an elevated platform reached by climbing some steep stairs. The moss growth in the vicinity gives it an anime-like feel, making it alluring to nature enthusiasts. This hidden gem should be on everyone's must-visit list when exploring Lake Towada.
Beautiful shrine nested amongst the woods. Feels somewhat out of an anime with the moss growth. Very lovely.

Small but beautiful shrine set on a peninsula in the lake. In January it was mostly deserted. Which suited us. Needed good shoes for the short walk through the snow and climb a short set of steps. The shrine is manned and the resident had a nice outdoor fire going. We prayed and purchased a goshuin and omimore. Nearby is a beautiful little island with shrines and the famous maiden statue. Several of the tourist shops/restaurants we're surprisingly still open, including food. Apple and dango mostly. We saw a wild Kitsune (fox) nearby that made the visit feel auspicious.

A very peaceful shrine a short walk away from Towadako bus stop. The shrine itself is covered by tall cedar trees and moss which gave it a very mysterious feel to it.
Towada-Hachimantai National Park is a scenic destination for hikers and nature lovers. The park boasts majestic volcanoes, a stunning crater lake, hot springs, and sprawling forests of virgin beech, pine, and cedar trees in the Tohoku region. Hikers can enjoy breathtaking views of mountain lakes with cooler temperatures during summer months. Oirase Gorge offers an excellent driving experience and motorcycle ride surrounded by beauty.
Lived in Aomori before and recently visited to do this hike again! It's a nice trail, not too challenging (there are stairs though) and there isn't many people. There is also an onsen nearby. Beware of bears as there is a sign at the beginning to proceed with caution. Perhaps bringing a bear bell is playing it safe. Otherwise, nice little hike!

It's okay. It's not a must see location. Just a small pond with a walkway and deck overlooking it. It's usually very busy, especially in autumn. So that takes away from any peacefulness. There is a bathroom here. The road is slightly wider so cars can park, but when it's busy it's common for people to keep parking along the narrow part of the road and it becomes hard to drive past. One good thing, in the winter after the Gold Route is open, you can go up the stairs and stand on top of the snow wall here. That's what made me give it 4 stars rather than 3.

It's about 9.1km from the forest road entrance to the waterfall, and it takes 120 minutes to get there, but you should expect it to take around 180 minutes.
4km from the start, go right at the fork and cross the bridge. If you continue along the forest road, you will arrive at the entrance to the waterfall on the left. The remaining 800m is a mountain road with some steep slopes. The trail is clear and there are many landmarks so you won't get lost.
Although the trail is long, except for the final mountain road, the trail is easy to walk through the forest, so there are few dangerous spots. The technical difficulty was low, and I felt that as long as I had enough physical strength, I could do it. There is a slope for about 1km from the branch, but the road is generally flat.
Climb from the left bank. I had intended to move to the right bank at the lower stage entrance, but the amount of water seemed to blow me away, so I ended up climbing the left bank as well. Be careful as it is very slimy and the top part is a little covered.
The descent starts from the middle entrance, moves to the right bank, and then goes to the lower entrance. I moved horizontally along the rock wall for about 10 meters and descended from the rock wall where there were many footholds. This may be easier when climbing. I avoided the bushes on the right bank because there were several Asian giant hornets flying around.
Wear clothing for light mountain climbing that does not expose your skin. Shoes suitable for light mountain climbing are also suitable. Sneakers are fine, but I think they'll hurt your feet, so it's best not to wear them.
There is a parking lot and toilet near the entrance.
About 6.5km from the start, we passed through the company land of Kobayashi Co., Ltd. The use of fire and the collection and felling of plants is strictly prohibited. Please do not leave any trash behind. There is an office at the entrance to the forest road. If you see someone there, I think it's a good idea to call them before leaving.

(Translated by Google) You will walk along a long forest road, but enjoy the beautiful flow until you cross the bridge.
After crossing the bridge and climbing the hill, you will find a beautiful forest with no bushes and a clear view on both sides of the forest road.
There are bamboo bushes from the signboard to the waterfall, but if you think the waterfall is just around the corner, it might not be a problem (lol)
When I saw the waterfall when I arrived, I said, ``I'm glad I came!!''

(Translated by Google) It was a wonderful waterfall. However, this is not a place I would go to lightly. At the very least, it is a very dangerous journey for people who are not into mountain climbing. To be honest, I misstepped and fell, and both of my feet ended up on the bottom of the valley. If you fall, you are bound to suffer injuries such as broken bones, and if you are unlucky, you will die. If you absolutely have to go, do so at your own risk!

(Translated by Google) It is a 6 hour round trip course. It seems like you can cut the walking time in half by driving from another location, but I think this waterfall can only be reached by walking for 6 hours along the regular route.
I digress from here.
At the entrance to the promenade, there is a building belonging to the owner of the private land along the way (Kobayashi Towada Office). The following is a story I heard from an employee who happened to come out of the building.
・The water bonus due to melting snow ends around June 20th, and the peak of autumn leaves is around October 20th.
・It seems that people sometimes drive in and pick up trash, and over the past 10 to 20 years, the number of visitors has decreased year by year, and the amount of trash has decreased, making it refreshing.
- Don't trust these landmarks, as malicious people will remove the signs and ribbon tape and replace them elsewhere.

Towada City Library, designed by the renowned architect Tadao Ando, is a stunning piece of architectural art. The building's exterior showcases Ando's signature concrete design, while inside, the space is crafted to prioritize the functionality of a library. Visitors can enjoy a quiet and peaceful atmosphere within the library's walls. Additionally, the library features a beautiful garden with an over 100-year-old cherry tree and displays manuscripts from Tadao Ando himself.

Beautiful library in Towada. Plenty of studying are with wifi but not electric plugs for laptops. There is a cool room with just a few chairs where you can sunbathe and get sleepy holding a book. You can ask the front desk to validate your parking ticket.

(Translated by Google) A library designed by architect Tadao Ando.
Inside and outside of the building, the aura of Ando's architecture is somewhat diluted, as Tadao Ando's characteristic concrete is wrapped in an oblate style. Prioritize library functions. Without a doubt, this is Ando architecture.
A quiet interior space has been created following the theory of closing the outside and opening inward. However, there is not just one place, but depending on your preference, there are places where you can feel the outside world and people, and places where you can be separated from others and immerse yourself in your own world.
The corner where Tadao Ando's books are placed is Ando's architecture, with the oblate removed. It was a very attractive space, and I thought that if I had the money and Mr. Ando would take it on, I would like my house to look like this.

I really wanted to like this hotel because the service was so good. The women at the front desk are very kind, helpful, and hardworking.
However, I will not stay here again unless I’m desperate.
Bad location. It’s not near any station, and the route I took driving there has no signal at all.
Room had no trash can, and only one pillow for the double room. It was a long pillow meant for two people to share, but it really limits how you sleep. NOT TO MENTION, it was the most uncomfortable pillow I’ve ever lain on. It was as hard as a rock. I don’t know if that was the default pillow for every room, but if so, I question whoever thought that was a good idea. You can get another pillow from downstairs, but the number is very limited, so there were no more when I asked. I slept without using the hard pillow and used some of my clothes as a pillow instead.
Parking is free, unless you are one of the last people to check in and have to park in the third parking lot, which is a five minute walk from the hotel. They gave me a card to use for when I left the parking lot which should have made it free, however, the card did not work and I had to pay.
Breakfast ends at 8:30 on week days, which seems early to me. There’s not enough room in the dining area for everyone to eat, so they give you the option of using a to-go box to take your breakfast to your room. The SECOND the clock turned 8:30, they made everyone still in the dining area leave.
Honestly this hotel has the potential to be good, but my personal experience was not.
