Peace Memorial Park in Okinawa commemorates the WWII battle fought there with monuments and open space. The park is beautiful and expansive, with facilities such as eateries, restrooms, picnic areas, and parks available for visitors. Public transportation is convenient, and guided tours in English are recommended to enhance knowledge of the historical events. While some areas require an entrance fee, many outdoor attractions are free.
Although somber, it was an enriching reflective experience. The grounds are large and beautiful and even after three hours I didn’t get through everything. It was hot, but manageable and the facilities include small eateries, toilets, picnic areas, parks, etc. I took public transportation and the bus was pretty well timed each hour. I would definitely recommend this as a learning outing and use the English guided tours at the museums to have more understanding of the history. All of the outdoor things were free, but there was a small entrance fee to the Peace Hall, Museum, etc.

Very calming, peaceful, and quiet place with beautiful views of the ocean. Somber vibe for those interested in history. There are memorial stones inscribed with the names of every soldier that died during the war from all nations. There is also a museum, a lacquer Buddha, and a few shop stands on the grounds. May want to bring sunscreen and a hat!

Con:

Very similar to the US 9/11 Vietnam memorial. Projecting the message of history and peace across the world! Incredible significance!

I’ve visited (every war memorial in Japan) and before visiting this one I thought the Kamakazi museum was the best. This museum doesn’t hold back and shows very graphic photos and writings of the suffering of the Okinawans during the war.

A beautiful yet sombre place. Huge park with a memorial for those involved in the Battle of Okinawa. One can spend hours here. Nice view of the sea at the end. The museum unfortunately is closed until mid 2023. Beautiful flowers all over & even a pond with ducks & fishes. It wasn't crowded on a weekday around 3pm. Plenty of parking. Suitable for the whole family. From the historical standpoint to just enjoying a good park.

Wow! I didn’t realize that each prefecture has a memorial here. It was really beautiful to see all of them. The park is huge so you will definitely get all your wiggles out and there is a children’s park on one end as well. We would definitely recommend and go back again.

Huge park to remind us of history that took place during WW2. The views up top were amazing. We strolled for about 3 hours although the museum is closed until April. We also did not get to see the 32nd Army Underground. We were not sure if it was open but we didn't go because we had somewhere else to go.
Wear comfortable shoes and take note this place is very windy so flowy skirts are not advised. And bring cash. The park is free but we were not able to enter the Peace Hall because they only accept JPY cash for the entrance fee.

Beautiful and serene park with dozens of monuments commemorating WWII. Many of the monuments were purchased by local communities or family members of the fallen. Make sure you give yourself at least an hour, but more like two. Restrooms, vending machines, and a few little shops are available in the parking lot. The park is not terribly wheelchair accessible, lots of stairs to see the good views and most of the memorials.

My wife and I visited the Park for the first time when we toured the southern region of Okinawa Honto or main island with the rented car. We drove around the park, since it is still drizzling and the area of the park is rather huge. We parked the car a short distance away from the main entrance to walk around the grounds to have an overview of Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum. Opposite to the main entrance at the far end is the vast ocean. The park is well maintained and clean, and there are restrooms at the entrance of the museum. We did not visit the museum and there is fee to pay to visit the displayed exhibits at the museum.

This is a huge memorial park with numerous memorials, monuments and shrines. The museum is definitely worth a visit (only 300 yen for adults) which showcases the history of Okinawa from the time the Japanese took over to when the Americans gave over the lands back to them (not appropriate for younger/sensitive kids as there are photos of dead Okinawans on display). The museum also has a small children's section which is worth a visit with the kids.

Okinawa National Peace Memorial Park or Okinawa-senseki Kokutei Kōen is a memorial park for the soldiers who died for the Okinawa battle or war. It lists name of the soldiers of all sides- Japan and U.S., while it also lists some soldiers from Taiwan, South Korea and North Korea. In one section of the Park, it lists the name of sailors who worked in Japanese cargo boats which were attacked by U.S. navy [mainly by submarines] and sunk in Pacific Ocean. In another area, it documented the name of students, mainly female students, in Okinawa, who were conscripted as nursing or Medi-Care for the injured soldiers. Up to now, the Park has listed about 240,000 people who died at the Okinawa battle.
Other than viewing for the memorials for soldiers and other people who died for the wars, visitors can actually visit the site for its well-designed monuments, ocean views, etc. For monuments alone, there are about 100 monuments in the Park, which is designed for seeking the global peace forever, while it uses large sum of soldiers and other people who died in the Okinawa battle to indicate the cruelty of the past war.
The Park is free for admission, and there are a few public toilets for visitors.

It’s a park built to commemorate of those who died in Okinawa during the war. This is a place that every historian and younger generation should visit at least once when visiting Okinawa and remind us the tragedy and brutality that took place here. The park is huge and the views are breathtaking. Lots of parking available. When I visited, there were lots of high school students in the area and in the museum. But, on a Sunday...? Part of the park was closed and off limits due to renovations but the museum is open.

Peace prayer park. An awesome place to capture and get just a small glimpse of the battle of Okinawa during wwII. The ground’s are kept very well, the monuments with the names of those that fought during that battle is so beautiful. Not all names are present. The view of the cliff is breath taking. The indoor museum is amazing. It does cost about 300 yen to enter so plan accordingly.
The art exhibit with the gigantic Buddha is unreal. You have to see it to believe it. And there is a small butterfly garden there as well. Great experience, great art gallery, great day to take in just a little bit of history.
The Himeyuri Memorial Tower is a small but poignant museum that honors the brave female students and teachers who served as nurses during the 3-month Battle of Okinawa at the end of WWII. The museum provides a glimpse into the inhumane conditions these women endured, and most tragically lost their lives. The short film displayed at the museum is heart-wrenching and will surely move visitors to tears.
This is the most amazing museum in all of Japan. It captures the pain of WW2 in Okinawa.
This broke my heart. As a teacher I could never imagine sending my students into war. My job as a teacher is to protect my students.
Rest in peace.

Most were killed after dealing with un-human conditions. It’s a terrible story told here, and the short film on display will bring tears to your eyes.

The Himeyuri Peace Museum is a small yet poignant museum dedicated to the female students and teachers of Okinawa who provided nursing care during the 3-month siege by American forces towards the end of World War II. The museum commemorates their peaceful actions in an incredibly difficult time, as most were tragically killed after enduring inhumane conditions. Incredibly well-put together memorial/museum honoring the memories and trials of a group of (young) people forsaken by their country while being attacked by outside forces. A beautiful, sobering reminder of the humanity lost in times of conflict.
Just about every piece of material is translated with perfect English. I think only some of the poems weren't translated, which I understand.

A relatively nice place to visit for tourists compared to museum in the Naha city. Their translations are more ready for visitors to read. It was good to show tourists about the wwII history. Nice place to visit and the history shown was saddening.

A poignant story of how war affects innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire.
I like how the setup of the museum succeeds in making the visit enjoyable while avoiding the draggy-ness of over-information. The testimonials and accounts of the last days before the surrender were very interesting - glad there was English translation at that one booth in the room filled with Japanese scripts. The life-sized cave that opens up to the entrance of the museum is a nice touch too.
Tip for drivers using Gmaps: Don’t put Himeyuri Museum as your destination and follow the route blindly, as I did. You’ll end up in a no man’s land below a hill the museum is located. Instead, put Himeyuri Memorial Tower as the destination and you’ll find some parking near the museum.

There is a really sad and serene history behind this musuem. As we didnt have enough time, we didn't enter the musuem.
The Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum is a historical site that aims to promote world peace through education and history. Housed in a former NKVD building, the museum showcases the unspeakable horrors of World War II and the Soviet labor camps depicted by red dots on Gulag maps. The park features rows of black granite blocks inscribed with names of thousands who lost their lives during WWII.
Inexpensive entry and very informational museum. I thoroughly enjoyed walking through and reading the information and learning about the war. Foreigners are accommodated well.

A huge museum with a extensive collection about the Okinawa campaign. If you spend time here you could easily spend more than an hour in here so if you plan to, you should plan accordingly. Words and phrases are powerless to describe the pains and sufferings of the Okinawa people. This memorial not only honors the soldiers who fought on both sides, but gives a voice to the innocent civilians who endured unimaginable sufferings and brutalities. As Lincoln once said "War at the best, is terrible, and this war of ours, in its magnitude and in its duration, is one of the most terrible."

One of the historical WW2 Battle in the Pacific. Almost 250,000 lost their lives from US, UK, Scotland, Taiwan, Japan, North Korea and South Korea. The Japanese general that commanded the Chinese invasion in Shanghai also died here with many of the top Japanese imperial troops. Highly possible from Japanese troops from Nanking. Thus, let's remember that no one wins in any wars and not to repeat same problem. Conflicts of Israel and Hamas, conflicts between Ukraine and Russia, propaganda of hatred towards Japanese from official China news, and past history should be learned from Battle of Okinawa. Don't let human history repeats herself.

A very decent memorial to the war in Okinawa. We were astonished by the tranquility of the place, everything is very wide and peaceful and you can lose yourself in a long walk along the park in contemplation. Museum itself has an exhibit focusing not only on the assault on Naha, but also on the post-war reconstruction period with a very nice permanent exhibition. Some pictures displayed are not for the faint of heart, but that is the outcome of any conflict. There is a no-picture policy inside. English translations are lacking a bit somewhere, but the room with the first-hand accounts of the assault on Naha were almost all translated into English, I recommend reading at least a few of them as they were what really brought me to realize what a terrible event it was.

Hands down GREAT experience. LOTS of history in the museum itself and the iPods/headphones with your own language made it very informative. Took about 45 minutes inside and you can go at your own pace. Take notice of the many signs that say no photography and to be quiet while going through the indoor part. Don’t forget to take the elevator and go up the observation tower! Such spectacular views of everything.
Outside has just as much history. Don’t be fooled by what you can see once you get outside. There is so much more if you climb the stairs or take a golf cart. You could easily spend all day seeing everything but you’ll at least need 2 hours to get through everything quickly.
There is a small gift shop just beside the entrance/exit.

Close by to the Naha Airport. The supermarket/grocer section is clean and orderly with different produce from Itoman farmers or other province. It is a farmers market so they included the name of farmer on the packaging of potato/spinaches. A lot people were seen buying leafy vegetable in bundles!
Across the produce section, there is a seafood section. It houses about 6 shops selling various seafood, raw and grilled or in soups. About $60 USD got us grilled half Lobster (tough, overcooked?), 3 broiled scallops on a stick, a mussel and clam covered in sea urchin sauce, a bowl of rice with sea urchin & an asari clam soup. With the exception of the clam soup, everything else was cold/semi-cold.
Tourist prices & taste was 2/5. And the scariest part was the aftermath of my meal. After the meal, I headed straight to Naha Airport to catch a flight. Whilst walking through the airbridge to the plane, I vomited half of seafood breakfast and another half in the plane just before take off!! That was the most horrifying experience in travelling I've had to overcome.
The area was spacious with ample free parking, at least 10 table benches to eat, good rest stop for tourists or long distance drivers. There is a small Blue Seal counter and another selling coffee/tea.

Do not visit if you want to experience nature. Do visit if you want to drink and BBQ.
Beautiful beach. But lots of noise pollution, both from the music they play and airplanes overhead.
Unfortunately they don’t let you swim in the main beautiful area. Only in a roped off section.
Also they play music constantly at high volume! So much noise pollution, you can hardly hear the waves. Very Asia/Japan type of operation.
Seems like a large government project. Too bad about the music and the swim off area.
But I can see this place being very fun if you are drinking with your friends and BBQing.
The Itoman Fishing Cooperative Fish Center is a must-visit for seafood lovers in Okinawa. With a wide variety of fresh seafood, including lobster and unique finds like the Kamaboko company's boiled egg wrapped in a fish shell, this market offers an incredible selection at affordable prices. Visitors can enjoy outdoor seating and explore numerous small stores offering different seafood options. While it's a popular tourist spot near Ashibina Outlet, the sellers are known for their excellent customer service.
Several stalls with “buffet style” sashimi and grilled shellfish. Inexpensive and very value. Free parking and free tables.

Good fresh seafood. Since it was too crowded (there was no parking spot available even!), we took everything to go and had it at home.

Affordable seafood stalls and restaurants near the airport.
Tips: Get there before noon for less crowds and more table availability.

Love the variety of seafood and other foods. Great selection of small stores with fresh seafood including Lobster.
Definitely worth the trip. Kamaboko company is what you want to try. Boiled egg wrapped in a fish shell. The taste is off the chain.
Prices are very cheap for what you get.
Large parking lot. A big tourist spot so be ready for that. If you love seafood head over there. Near Ashibina Outlet.
The sellers here are nice and have great customer service.

Supermarket quality of fish and sushi, the seafood selection is interesting but it’s displayed directly without any glass top so everyone’s literally dipping their noses into food. It felt disgusting so I left without buying anything. Hall with the local food and souvenirs has decent lineup of rare drinks, crafts, and local ice cream. One additional star for Pokefuta!

Small scale fish market with ready-to-eat sashimi. Prices are very affordable but honestly the quality of fish varies. Some were nice, but some were disappointing. Do remember to check multiple shops to find ones that appears most fresh to you. Overall comment: come if you happen to be nearby and check shops thoroughly before purchase

I've been to 2 fish markets this trip to Okinawa, the other one is in Naha City.
Between both fish markets I would recommend this one. It has more variety and there are outdoor seats.
Although this fish market is much smaller, price wise is much more affordable.
For sea bream in Naha First Fish Market I was quoted around 3,000¥ (for the smallest, approx 600gm to 700gm) but here it costs about 700¥.
As it was cold when I was in Okinawa in Jan 2019, it was really great when there was a newly opened stall that sells hot seafood miso soup. (I've attached the menu in this review for your easy reference).
We ordered 2 types of soup, clams and prawn. Both were great.
Beside this fish market, there is a grocery shop and a souvenir shop in the same compound.
You would spend around 2 hour at this place, and you can have brunch here since their fish market only opens at 10am, and can do some souvenir shopping.

Tables were limited, and not really cleaned, depends on previous users to clear food waste. No system getting the tables so someone on next table just jumped tables when my group was already waiting at the side. Grilled lobster and prawns run out pretty fast, managed to get the lobster but meat was slightly tough and hard to cut, no knife was given. Prices is definitely cheaper here. One highlight at this place is a stall at the end where a lady sells a fish-rice ball, seriously under-rated, i bought a sour plum version, something I believe u cannot find easily, 150yen highly recommended.

A row of seafood heaven!!! So many places with so many different seafood options!! The place with the variety of rolls is delicious!! And it wasn't expensive!! Bring yen as some places didn't have the credit card logo, some do take credit card.
Has outdoor seating thar a cover on it. Has a bathroom on site. One of the new pokemon manhole covers is located here.
The Shiraume Memorial Tower is a revered historical landmark in the southern region. It serves as a cenotaph dedicated to female students who lost their lives during the war. Unlike Himeyuri Tower, it stands on a serene hillside amidst sugarcane fields. The tower, painted in white plum blossoms, is accompanied by a parking area and restroom facilities. However, it lacks vending machines, so visitors are advised to bring their own refreshments.
It’s very sad what happened on this island. A lot of people died here especially the students who were drafted in to be nurses… very sad. RIP 🙏

The Shiraume Student Corps was formed primarily of fourth-year students from Okinawa Prefectural Second Girls' High School and was responsible for nursing soldiers. During the Battle of Okinawa, in addition to the famous Himeyuri student corps, there were multiple student corps made up of students from other schools. One of them is the Hakubai Student Corps.
On March 6, 1945, 56 people joined the 24th Division Hygiene and Nursing Training Corps as military auxiliary nurses, and on March 24 of the same year, nursing education was discontinued due to the intensification of attacks by the U.S. military, and they were sent to a hospital halfway up Mt. Yaese. 46 students were assigned to a 24th Division First Field Hospital. On April 1st of the same year, the U.S. military began landing operations on the main island of Okinawa, and on June 4th, as the Japanese army's last line of defense, Mt. Yaese, came under fire, the student corps was ordered to disband. It is said that he continued to work in the First Field Hospital trench of the 24th Division, where the remaining soldiers had retreated, and was killed in the trench near Hakubai Tower during the onslaught of the U.S. Army from June 21st to 22nd. In the end, 22 of the 46 Shiraume students were killed in action.
Right next to the current Shirobai Tower, there is the first Shirabai Tower made of very small natural stone.
It is a place where I truly feel that the peace in postwar Japan was built on the precious sacrifices of these people. We pray for the repose of the souls of the victims.

Okinawa Prefectural Daini Girls' High School was founded in Kumoji in 1905 as Naha City Girls' Arts School, became Naha City Jitsuka Girls' High School in 1921, and moved to Matsuyama in 1923. In 1928, it was transferred to Okinawa Prefecture and became Okinawa Prefectural Second Girls' High School. The school building was destroyed in the 10/10 air raid in 1944. The school was not rebuilt after the war. It was a school that focused on general education, with emphasis on artistic subjects such as music and art. The ``white plum'' is the school's symbol, which was also included in the school emblem established when the school moved to Matsuyama.

There is also a cliff called 'suicide cliff' where many japanese soldiers and civilians took their lives. The winery gift shop lets you sample their 4 wines they produce their and sells a few other wines as well. Yen only for entrance and the refreshment shop. The gift and winery shop accepts credit card. The illumination shows are here too in December.

The illumination was full of color and the price was inexpensive. The food was not enjoyable as we have had at other outdoor events on Okinawa.
Itoman Gyomin Shokudo is a seafood restaurant located in an inviting, rustic setting with stone walls and wooden furnishings. The menu features island-inspired dishes such as garlic butter fish, and there is an English menu available for convenience. The friendly waitstaff provides attentive service without any unpleasant attitudes. This establishment specializes in seafood, particularly whole fish for lunch or dinner. It's a must-visit destination for those who appreciate great seafood cuisine and are willing to travel to Itoman for the experience.
Great place to eat. It is worth the trip to Itoman for this great fish course. I loved it.

Not so good as I expected and they didn't serve me my dessert... I think they forget as I also didn't remind of that till night. Pretty sad coz I love coconuts and it was not a cheap meal, like 3000 for one 定食

The seafood is very very fresh. The sashimi dish with rice is 200% fresh with just good light seasoning. The other deep fried fish is perfectly cooked with seaweed and butter which is super delicious! Good service at a competitive price, there's always a queue outside the restaurant.

The food is great and freshly made by local ingredients, and it's right next to the town's fish market. You will like it very much if you are a fish lover, since they have different fish everyday which you can choose to have it simmered or butter fried, but if you arrive late some options may be sold out. My partner said the appetiser is amazing.
They also have special menu written on the blackboard and I managed to find some vegetarian options, the fried tofu is lovely.
It's a very popular and busy restaurant so you may need to wait for your table. Oh one more thing, please don't miss their classy dessert!

Be prepared to queue: we arrived around 18:30 on a weekend and waited one hour to be seated.
The butter sauce of the fish is incredible. Unfortunately the only fish remaining was not an Okinawan one for arriving so late, but it was still amazing.
Definitely the best restaurant around!

Only talking on the level of taste, this place offers the best of this kind. I didn't expect it could cook a simple cuisine of fried fish up to this much delicate. Its tofu pizza is also a delicacy even in the perspective of internationals. Few with which I'm not satisfied is, it doesn't have an English menu and its waiters and waitresses can't speak English either. Furthermore, this could be merely my feeling, but the attitude of the female manager felt like a bit over-proud.

One of the best fish restaurants in Okinawa. I got the butter fried fish set which lived up to my expectations. This is one of my favourite fish dishes and I had it in many places. Here, it is served with a special flavoured butter sauce. I chose the red (awamori and aged tofu) version which was great. The sashimi started, tsukemono, red miso soup and desert nicely round out the meal. The service is also excellent and friendly.

Waitress is very friendly. They do not express unhappiness and annoying attitude even though you can read their food list in menu. There is a English menu for you to order. Mainly selling seafood, especially fish. If you like to have whole fish for lunch or dinner. This is definitely a right place for you.

English menu is available. The butter fried fish was very well cooked. The appetizer and desert for the set meal was simple but thoughtful execution of the ingredients. Credit card payment is only available for dinner, so lunch is cash only. We also tried the sea grape don which was ok. Go for the fish. There are many sizes and options available. Prices for the fish set starts from 1,800 yen. Very good value for money.

You can give everything a miss except the pan-fried fish w butter. That's the only dish that deserves the four star review. Staff not fluent with English, will face some slight troubles when trying to order as they have many types of fishes.

What a spectacular view! This makes for a great day trip. We usually bunch it in with the memorial peace park and Gushikawa castle. Lots of fun spending time down south.

A bit far away from the main road, a small observation deck at the southern Okinawa.
