Feels weird rating my church, but I think it's important to share different perspectives, even if they're a bit critical. I miss Pastor Roger Storm—he was incredible!—but I'm very happy with Pastor Brian's sermons. They're rooted in God's Word, feel earnest, are powerful and instructive. I always look forward to and appreciate his sermons.
The other pastor, though, Matt Meyers, makes me want to skip church altogether. His sermons are watered-downed anecdotes about himself. Sharing personal experiences is fine and can be useful as a teaching tool, but not when God's Word is barely a footnote. His sermon last Sunday on how we *don't* have to pray was very odd and seemed counter to the current series. The Bible is full of examples of prayer, yet he only focused on himself. I've been attending Compass since Roger Storm was the pastor, and some of the changes at Compass have been great, but promoting Matt Meyers and having him preach regularly has not been one of them.
I'm also concerned that they shut down their Hispanic Ministry. My in-laws predominately speak Spanish, so that's why we originally started attending Compass (formerly Chandler Christian Church). We weren't thrilled with the Hispanic pastor as he was very dry and not particularly charismatic or engaging, but at least the sermons were in Spanish. Now, however, Compass is only in English. Why did it dissolve? Why is it still listed online? The Hispanic pastor has moved out of state and nearly all of the Spanish-speaking attendees have left. There's no Hispanic ministry here nor community. It has all been neglected and shut down. How can we say we're building up God's Kingdom if we're not serving a significant part of our community? This is a disappointing shift in Compass' ministry.
Finally, I'm enjoying the worship very much! I'm glad they've finally moved away from just sad, somber songs, and are finally including more upbeat ones that get you pumped and energized. Yes, worship is multifaceted and should include many different types of songs, but when they're all somber and weepy after somber and weepy after *another* set of somber and weepy—well it doesn't make me want to attend worship. But!! The energetic songs are phenomenal! The worship team is really making the worship time feel great, empowering, and fun! Worshiping God should feel good and make you excited for God's love, not down and depressed. So, yes, this has been a great improvement at Compass.
