The Mill Mountain Star is a prominent and iconic landmark overlooking the city of Roanoke, Virginia. This neon-lit star stands at an impressive 100 feet and is a regional cultural symbol that attracts many visitors to the area. Perched on top of Mill Mountain, this location offers magnificent views of the city and surrounding natural landscape. It provides an excellent opportunity for visitors to enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, walking or simply taking in the beautiful scenery.
The view here is incredible! It is a great place to get a quick bit of exercise (especially if you’re like me, and enjoy shorter hikes)! Thankfully the area is kept clean of trash and green with vibrant, beautiful nature aspects! I highly recommend a trip here if you’re visiting the area or simply have never been before. Whether it’s simply for the walk, photogenic properties, or to enjoy the surroundings this is a must-see location for residents and visitors alike!

The star is one of the best and oldest attractions in the area, drawing visitors who are locals as well as tourists/visitors to our city. You can't beat the view of the valley, and the overlooks are perfect for capturing those gorgeous views. The playground has picnic tables next to it for a perfect spot to enjoy lunch while the kids have their own little adventures climbing, sliding, and making their way through the tunnel.
The star and overlooks are free, as well as parking, making it an excellent choice for a weekend afternoon family outing or picnic.

I've driven by the Star on many drives through Roanoke...and finally made a trip with a friend recently; worth it! I would like to see it after dark, but seein the urban sprawl of the city, mixed with the mountain views was spectacular during the day.
There is no cost to drive up to the overlook, and not much of a walk to the monument. Park area is clean and well maintained, with historical and informational signage.
Definitely a great place to spend the day...there are other attractions nearby, including but not limited to the zoo, the discovery center, and hiking trails.

The Mill Mountain Star is a historical landmark in Roanoke. The view of the valley is spectacular. It has two overlooks, and walking trails. It's also in the same vicinity of the zoo (didn't visit due to time constraints), but we did take a little walk along one of the paved trails. I'd say that it's a 'must visit' spot if you are visiting the Roanoke area. (and it's free!)

If you are an outdoor person and/or have a dog, this is a great place to go. The view is outstanding and the air feels crisp and clean. There are trails and paths to walk. Some of the trails are difficult (rocks and grade), but the paths are paved and easy to walk. From the parking lot to the star is an easy path. Worth the short drive up there.

Panoramic views of the Roanoke Valley from several overlooks. Also a zoo, small park and Discovery Center - all in the shadow of the world's largest man-made star. Only the zoo has an admission fee.

We've been walking here in the evenings for a little exercise. Nice paved paths by star and zoo. Interesting trails through woods, rocky in places but well worn paths.
L Finch — Google review
Our family enjoyed the view! The mountain biking was fun. When I walked our dog on the trail below the Star, we were greeted with so much broken glass. I thought it would be okay once I got into the forest area, but there was broken glass along the entire trail. I had to carry out dog. Bummer!

The view from Mill Mountain was great even though the weather was not so great! Even with limited visibility and rain on our heels we were still able take in a pretty nice view from the vantage point at the base of the star.
From what I could see the trails were nice(at the beginning at least)wish the weather was nicer so we could have meandered about for awhile.
The restrooms…well…for guys I hope you don’t have IBS or another sensitive tummy issue. Ladies I would just hold it seriously! It’s not worth it!

Magnificent place! It's a beautiful area to stop and relax and take in the breath taking view of Roanoke and the Blue Ridge Mountains. I HIGHLY recommend a stop here!
Kim W. — Google review
What a beautiful stop this was. It's located on the Blue Ridge Mountain Road. The breath taking view looked over Roanoke. I bet it's beautiful at night! I hear the star lights up, too. They have a trail you can hike with your four-legged friends. They even offer a little dispenser of doggie poop bags. The dogwood trees were in bloom. The surrounding foliage is lush and green.
Bathrooms are also provided. The main road takes you for a scenic drive.

This landmark is impressive and the views are amazing. At night it is very grand to see the star fully illuminated. Access is restricted after 11pm.
There is a pavilion to picnic under as well as a playground for children in the park. A beautiful garden is well maintained and a free discovery center holds information about the local geography and animals.
There is also a small zoo on Mill Mountain which can be visited for a fee. There is a miniature train you can purchase tickets to ride on and see the perimeter of the zoo. With the train tickets and entry for 4 adults and 2 children the cost was less than $100. The zoo closes prior to the park closing, so check hours ahead of time.

Beautiful, beautiful view of the city and just looking at all the mountains. Must visit if you're in Roanoke! Came to visit a friend, and she took me to see!! So grateful for the memorable opportunity she gave me as well as thinking of taking me! Thanks Olivia!!! :)

Great thing to see up close after seeing it from below. The Roanoke Star, also known as the Mill Mountain Star, is the world's largest freestanding illuminated man-made star. It is just a short walk to the front side of the star. There is a nice platform that overlooks Roanoke for great viewing of the city below, but also with enough room to turn around and get a picture of the giant star. It was cold and starting to get dark, there were only 2-3 cars at any point. There looked to be nice restrooms but didn't go check them out.

A marvelous view! A wonderful spot to go anytime of the day but I recommend going at night. I took my daughter and we had an absolutely amazing time! Very easy to get to. Not a far walk at all to the lookout. The lookout itself is outstanding! The star is truly a marvel. I highly recommend this for a family outing. I will be back here again and again!

Was on a work trip and went there when it was dark, the star light was light as well, we all had a flocking good time and walked away happier than when we had arrived. Besides my teams fowl language, it was kid appropriate.

This will always be one of my favorite places in the valley! We can see it from a window in our house which is a really sweet bonus! The views are breathtaking and it's always clean no matter how many guests are on the platform. A favorite for us is to visit in December and see all the pockets of lights!

The Mill Star is usually all white except for patriotic holidays. GPS brings you to the bottom of the site. You need to keep driving until you see the entrance to the park. The view of the city from the lookout is amazing.

I visited the Mill Mountain Star on an early morning will in town for a sporting event. Walked around the trails and walking paths. Then stopped at the star and the overlook of the city. Great view. Very easy to get to from the parking area as well.
Black Dog Salvage is a well-known and popular warehouse in Roanoke, Virginia that offers an array of restored furniture and antiques. This eclectic store is featured on the DIY Network's Salvage Dawgs show. Visitors can spend hours browsing through their constantly changing inventory, which includes unique items for home renovation or decoration. Additionally, guests can explore the remote warehouse where surprises await at every turn.
My mom and I stopped in to check out the store and couldn’t have asked for a better experience. The inventory was really interesting and every staff member was warm and welcoming. We even met Mike and had a great little chat, he’s a very sweet guy and even posed for a photo with my mom. 10/10 would absolutely recommend!

Pretty exciting visit today at this very famous Black Dog Salvage, that hit the world stage with the TV show couple of years ago. There's a part of the store with only vintage and salvage stuff (toys, furniture, light fixtures, kitchen accessories, etc.) as well as a part with refurbished and finished goods. They have here also the loft located on the 2nd floor with some high price paintings. 🖼
It's definitely an interesting spot to visit and look around for all these goods stored here, which many of them are very unique and have priceless value. However to afford them is a different thing. 😅

So many wonderful things are at Black Dog Salvage. The staff were knowledgeable and were great help to me as I had questions. Several staff members assisted me in different areas of the building. I was surprised at the amount of art in the Loft. I purchased a few things and will return to see what I can find next time. I was impressed with the variety of items that were available. I also found many items that I will attempt to replicate at home.

If you are in the area. STOP BY! Great place to spend an hour (or 4) browsing all of their cool items that change every day. Ask to go to their remote warehouse as well. Every turn is a surprise. If you are renovation a home, looking for something special for your home, this is THE place to find it. Thank you Folks for a great shop

Very neat place with all kinds of salvaged items that perks a person's imagination of what all could be done each item. If you stop at the right day/time you could get to enjoy some live music and a beer or two. Definitely worth a stop even if you are not crafty and just looking for something to do.

A very cool place to visit. If it's old they got it. 4 stars because prices are high...especially some of the consignment items.
Mark Matthews — Google review
Great place for reclaimed, restored and repurposed items. I went in to get a mortise lock for our 100+ year old door and they had several to choose from.
Russell Lescault — Google review
I recently stopped here on a road trip from Boston to Florida. I was a little surprised at the sheer size and inventory in the building - they literally have a little bit of everything. I only had about an hour to spend here and it was not nearly enough as I could have spent at least half a day looking around - truly enjoyed my experience here. The employees are absolutely awesome - super friendly and helpful. Other reviewers have stated that the prices are too high but this is a legitimate salvage business that incurs significant costs to harvest inventory so the prices reflect the true market value of the items they sell. This is not a flea market and if you come here looking for flea market prices, then you should pass. However, if you are looking for very specific or unique items and willing to pay fair market value for the item, then this is the place for you. Lastly, the store is absolutely immaculate for a salvage business, It is extremely well organized and very clean. One would expect a lot of dust and dirt because it is salvage but it is not - pleasantly surprised at the cleanliness and organization of the store. If you visit, I recommend at least 3 to 4 hours if you are a slow browser and at least 1.5 to 2 hours if you are looking for something specific. This place is LOADED with inventory so there's a ton to look at and I will be returning on my next road trip.

What a fun adventure! There is something for everyone and everything 💗. Black Dog Salvage has grown in the past two years and is full of wonderful artisan items as well as unusual salvage finds. The food trucks are good too... I highly recommend a visit. Cards, jewelry, candles, garden items, hanging art, etc. Have fun, get inspired, and support local businesses - make a trip to Black Dog Salvage ⭐

We were extremely excited about visiting Black Dog Salvage after watching the TV show. What we forgot to account for was that with a TV show comes TV show prices. They had a lot of availability from doors, to iron works, bathroom fixtures, light fixtures, stain glass windows, any kind of wood you would want, and furnishings. However the price tag was so large that despite the items being unique (can find some items at other shops for much cheaper) they became impractical to purchased when you could find a new item for hundreds of dollars less, looking and functioning much better. You just can’t beat the amount of stuff BDS has. Which again should be cause for lower pricing. They do have a section for vendors to sell their products and the selection varies from vendor to vendor as well as the price. It is a beautiful shop and the employees are friendly. Just to walk around and explore is fun enough.

Went with the family and we all found something we loved! Awesome place to get things or to get ideas. The staff was awesome. We probably spent 3 hours looking around, and I know we didn’t see everything. Definitely recommend!

I really enjoyed my visit here for the first time. It must be a dream location for people who love restoration of any kind. There's so much going on here. You could visit over a hundred times and you'll still notice something you haven't seen before. I highly recommend this place for those in search of new projects. They also have Black Dog Salvage merchandise such as jars of apple butter, pickles, t shirts, etc.
Parking is located on the side of the building. Entrances are also on the side and front of the building.
The Virginia Museum of Transportation is a former freight depot that showcases a variety of planes, trains, and cars. Visitors can take an interactive walk along the David R. & Susan S. Goode Railwalk, which tells the story of the railroad industry in the region. Inside, there are exhibits featuring model trains and an impressive car collection. Outside, visitors can climb aboard real trains and planes.
Our family really liked exploring all the transportation vehicles in the rail yard. The other big hit was the model train exhibit of Roanoke. A great little museum. Definitely worth a couple hours if you're in Roanoke.
Monica Faucette — Google review
This is a great way to kill a couple hours or more if weather prevents you from doing more outdoor activities. The museum has a nice mixture of different types of transportation on display, but not a lot of each. They have real planes, trains, and automobiles on display here just not a lot. What they do have is very interesting and unique. The model ships and boats are exceptional and displayed well for everyone to see. There’s a simulation plane that you climb in the cabin, sit, and look around.
The rail yard is really impressive with 3 locomotives that you can go out and look at if you choose. The automobile inventory, thought limited, is still impressive and worth checking out.

Really amazing place with many interactive displays. Fun for all ages, but not a lot of kids running wild. Not too crowded.

Very exciting visit today in the Virginia Museum of Transportation here in Roanoke. A really fascinating journey back in time to learn about the history of railways. 🚂⏳️ Beside restored locomotives and railroad cars, there are also some old airplanes and vintage cars. 🛻🚙🛩 So much to see here, that the time I had (around 1,5 hrs) was far not enough. Therefore I recommend to plan more time to be able to see and experience everything in all details. I did really enjoy the visit. 💯👍🏻

This was our first visit and very enjoyable. We were brought here by friends that live in the area and had a great day. There is plenty to see and spend the day checking it all out. Great car collection, model trains, real trains outside, air planes, and much more. $10 entrance fee, $8 60 and over. Well worth the visit and you can spend a lot of time if you look closely at every display.
Philip Keithley — Google review
Really fun museum. It seems to be geared more towards kids, but I enjoyed seeing the old cars and trains anyway.
Really liked the few trains that they had built up a little entrance so you could go inside of them. The caboose was a really neat example of that.
Ticket price is a little high for what it is, but then it can't be cheap to run such a museum.
Russ D (Rusty) — Google review
Nice museum with various steam & diesel locomotives, and rolling stock. 611 steam locomotive was there when I visited last Sunday. It has been restored and is often out on excursion trips. Luck to get to see it - up close too.
It was obvious that the museum could use a stronger endowment/benefactor but seem to do well with whatever they have.
Railroads are not only focus of the museum. Have a nice automobile collection and several static educational exhibits. They also have an O-gauge model railroad children (and old men like me) would enjoy.
It's worth a visit and a great place to take grandkids. Good for rail enthusiasts as well, whether young or old.

The entry fee for 1 adult is $12.66, and you can add a donation. There's So Much to See! Trains, Planes, Cars! In addition, learn about the history of each mode of transportation, and important figures in each one. Very friendly and helpful people assisted us.

I've been to this museum with friends from out of town a few times, and I always enjoy it. There's loads of stuff to learn about, trains and planes to climb in, and of course the train yard outside is lots of fun. If you're at all interested in planes, trains, and automobiles, this is the spot!

Free parking right out front. Entry was $12.
We spent about 2-3 hours here. The exhibits are a little tired in places (Some must be 15 years old!) But very interesting nonetheless.
Definite highlights are railyard and the model trains!

What an excellent museum! It’s professionally set up with trains, cars, planes, buses, fire trucks, and memorabilia. We really enjoyed our time here. The huge 611 steam engine was my favorite. Well worth the entrance fee.

Third visit here in the last ten years, this visit was on par with my first. Plenty of things to see between the cars on display inside and the trains on display out in the yard. Really enjoyed the circus train displays on the upper level.
Brady Harper — Google review
We like this place! It's easy to do and fun for all ages. We even joined last year but refuse to join this year because at this museum they make you pay for special events, like their trick or treating etc. So we will visit when guests come. They are constantly adding things, and the history they have collected is very impressive. It was great that the 611 was back, but we unfortunately missed it by a day! It is doing trips elsewhere. All in all, I would recommend visiting this museum, but the membership is NOT worth it. And some displayed were closed when we went. However, I think they may have just been painting. My company loved it!

It was a very nice place to go we enjoyed all of the exhibits the automotive collection was great. I really liked the 1934 dodge brothers school bus It was very interesting. They have a lot of model trains. The restored locomotives were very nice. They even have an airplane exhibit.

This is a nice museum however it is overpriced for what you get. At the St. Louis transport museum you can climb in the locomotives. Not here. If it were more hands on would be a five star as they have some awesome stuff. UPDATE Also this has now gone down to a 2 star review. An employee threw something at my drone while I was simply trying to document some of the work going on the 611. I live right behind the museum and had clear line of sight with my drone and was fully following the FAA rules. It is also a federal crime to attempt to destroy or hurt an aircraft which a drone is. If I was in charge of the 611, I would be proud to have people try to photograph and video tape it. Not try to destroy their camera.

What an amazing time full of excitement and nostalgia. It was a little tricky to find because we didnt realize it was inside a larger building that also had an arcade and some other activities. well worth the effort! Many, many pinball machines with only a few down for service (which is to be expected, some of these are extremely old). Gorgon, black knight, original baseball arcade game and so so many more. Brought me back to my childhood. In two hours I was able to zip around and try everything out at least once. They also had a couch setup with a nintendo switch setup for people to play. For $13.50 per person it is a no brainer to stop and play here. The stools they have available make it very comfortable to play for awhile, and I didnt feel like anyone hogged a machine for very long. Will definitely visit again on our next trip through.

Once you get the main ticket, all machines are set to free play so that you can enjoy any and all of the games to your hearts content. Great energy and fun with free play on all the machines. Staff loved talking with us about machine repair. The fact they have a handful of arcade games and a Nintendo Switch makes it easier to bring my 7yo without them getting tired of pinball. Worth buying a membership if you're a family, even if it's a little out of the way! And it keeps getting better. We come 1-2 times a month and as often as not, there's a new machine to try.
The Taubman Museum of Art is a modern facility that houses both permanent and traveling exhibits. It also features an interactive area for children, a cafe, and a gift shop. Visitors can explore inspiring exhibits and galleries in the museum while enjoying great local restaurants in Downtown Roanoke. The Historic Roanoke City Market offers locally-made goods to browse through as well. One notable exhibit is the Ruth E Carter exhibit which requires a $10 admission fee but it's worth it.
Made the drive from Lynchburg and thoroughly enjoyed the experience! We came specifically for the Ruth E Carter exhibit (which is $10 to enter and well worth the price of admission!) but loved visiting the other areas of the museum as well. Museum Guard Mike made our experience even better by telling us stories that we never would have known from the display cards. I will definitely be back!

I needed a large space to host a ~250 person celebration of life event for my dad who recently passed away and the museum was perfect! Whitney, the facility rental manager, is so friendly and was a huge help throughout the event planning and on the day of the event. I rented the atrium and the auditorium which can combine to make one big space, and she made sure everything was set up (tables, decorations, rental furniture, etc.) for a seamless look between the two spaces. During the event, Jackie was running the show at the front desk and was a massive help throughout the entire evening. Any questions I had or anything I needed she was there ready to help, and always with a warm smile. Thank you to everyone at the Taubman who made this event possible, it was a magical night!

I have always loved visiting this muesuem. I feel like a lot of contemporary art collections are not free to the public and I love the opportunity it brings for so many artists that I’ve gotten to see over the years. Hear are some of the pieces that are here in September some of these may not be here anymore. Everyone is very well informed it’s a clean establishment. I’m a sucker for a well lit clean bathroom this place has this. I’m very sad to say the invisible man on the roof was not there when we went and it was sad to see him missing. :( hope he comes back. Other than that always love my time here

My husband and I recently got married at the Taubman and could not have been more pleased with a venue. The beautiful space and natural light allowed us to not have to worry about many decorations as the space holds enough of it's own beauty to make the day unforgettable. Whitney was so helpful in the months long process and made us feel special. She was extremely responsive to all of our questions, needs, and wants. We loved the unique spaces to take bridal party and couple photos including the patio, art exhibits and ceremony backdrop. It was a perfect day and I owe most of that to Whitney and the beauty of the Taubman.

A small museum but you can tell their exhibits are well thought out as well as have a good variety of subjects and styles. We spent a good 2 hours here. I also appreciated the staff at the desk when you enter. The girl noticed my camera and made a point to tell me about the observation deck so I could get some good shots out there before the high winds came. It was much appreciated. I found this to be a great treasure to experience in Roanoke.
Always fun to walk around downtown Roanoke. We had a beautiful day to stop in places we've never been before. Several new restaurants and wine bar. There are plenty of great historic buildings to take photos of, as well as art in many places all around the square. Take an afternoon and walk around. Try a new restaurant. You'll enjoy it.

Overall this place has endless exploration for kids. Pop into the main lobby on any given day and they might stare at the various aquariums for a half hour. It's always clean, the box office people are friendly and efficient, and the gift shop is nice. [8/10] I've been to the science museum lots of times over the years and there are frequent updates and changes of exhibits. Be sure to allow plenty of time at the touch tank. [9/10] The pinball museum and Starcade are both fantastic if you can hit a day when there aren't huge crowds. If not, they can be both overwhelming with noise and disappointing with wait times. [7/10]
The most recent trip was for Kids Square. Wow, what a place! My kids are 9 and 5 and had an absolute blast. They were wide open for the whole 3 hours and not ready to leave. Favorite exhibits were the children's hospital, salon, and the blue "sand" pit with the slides and all the things to scoop and pour with. [10/10]

Bayou Snowballs 😂 I'm so glad they had "milk shakes & ice cream" on their windows or I wouldn't have known what they sold. The lady that was working was awesome, super friendly, super attentive! She made me a banana pudding milk shake that was amazing! I live 2 hours, away, but I'd go back for her milkshakes! There were 2 of us & we both loved our shakes!

First time I have been to Kids Square and was very impressed! There are a multitude of activities for kids 6 months to probably 12/13 years old. There is a sensory wall (buttons and also brushes (see pics). There is a train set, octonauts play set, tons of building sets, music, sandbox, small rubber pieces "sandbox" (see pics it's blue), "play" restaurant/ bank/ hospital/ vet/ grocery store/ campsite, climbing wall, puppet theater, I know I'm forgetting some but hoping this gives the idea that this is A LOT. definitely going back with my 8 year old step son!! The staff was very friendly and were constantly cleaning.

Can’t review the whole center as we only visited the Stockade. That place was awesome! So many old games that were so much fun to play. The rest of the center seems nice. There is a free aquarium in the lobby and a free rooftop garden for anyone to view.

Excellent! Actually blew my mind at what all they had. Great experience for a toddler with a nice environment. All the areas are interesting and different which keep kids'attention. Can't recommend enough

We've been to the children's museum twice now. It is hands down the best one we've ever seen. We can spend hours and still not get to all the exhibits. I love how they updated and decorated for the seasons (lots of fun Halloween decorations right now!). Even the baby dolls they can "adopt" to carry around we're decked out in Halloween outfits. As the mother of a 2 month old, along with my older girls, I especially appreciated the nursing/ quiet room. It had everything and more you could wish for when you need to step out for a moment. (Rockers, a bin of extra onsies just in case, a basket of nursing pads, a private area for siblings to play while you take care of baby). 10/10 from us!

Awesome gem in the city! Arcade & Pinball Museum! Science center for kids as well.
Rooftop view was awesome with koi pond, I unfortunately didn't get to see the rooftop with all the greenery, but it looked as if they stock a green/plant wall and plants everywhere! Main lobby has fish tanks and turtles. Shops all around the outside.
I personally went for pinball, the rest of the building was a plus!

We went to Kids Square to celebrate a birthday. Every single person had a blast from our youngest guest who was 2 to our oldest who was 64. Definetly worth checking out. We will be coming back over and over. My children are already begging to return!

Really cool place to go m sleeve the day. They have an entire floor dedicated to a kids play area, that has pretend stores, vet, hospita, construction and more for children to play.
Other floors include a science museum, an arcade, and a pinball arcade. Very fun place to take the kids.

Rarely will I review a building, but this one's been built from the ground up as a fantastic cultural center, housing Mill Mountain Theatre, pinball and video game museums, an African American museum, a science museum and more. Plus the aquariums on the first floor are fun to watch in their own right.

We had an awesome time at Center in the Square. We looked at the aquariums while waiting to see Elf the Musical! It was a wonderful show and start to the Christmas season!

a one of a kind special place! staff is super friendly and very knowledgeable. we got a chance to relive some exciting childhood memories covering all of the years of arcade fun. every pinball machine I have ever played or seen all working and in almost new shape. Video games from asteroids to dragons lair and all in between. this museum will provide multiple days fun and excitement for the entire family. we are going back many more times. surrounding businesses have many restaurants and the people everywhere were friendly and helpful with information. the museum is open 11 to 8 and when you go plan on making a day of your trip. only pay admission fee and play for free on pinball and or video games. they also have rooftop gardens, aquarium, and movie theater for children and adults alike. we didn't adventure into the theater or gardens. there was a private event in the gardens. this is a gem of an adventure that all ages will enjoy.

Kids in the square is the most incredible and wonderful experience for young children I have ever seen. My granddaughter and my family thoroughly enjoyed it.

Center in the Square in Roanoke has long been a cultural hub, offering a diverse array of attractions under one roof. Housing museums like the Science Museum of Western Virginia and the Harrison Museum of African American Culture, it provides a rich tapestry of educational experiences.
The Roanoke Pinball Museum, located within Center in the Square, has been a standout attraction, offering a nostalgic journey through the history of pinball machines. The blend of interactive exhibits, engaging displays, and live performances at the Mill Mountain Theatre contributes to the venue's dynamic atmosphere.
The iconic Roanoke Star, perched atop Mill Mountain and visible from Center in the Square, adds to the scenic charm. Overall, the Center in the Square has been a vital contributor to Roanoke's cultural scene, providing a space for exploration, learning, and entertainment.

This is a fun place to visit, with a nice variety of museums, from a lovely aquarium and candy store on the ground level. I visited the pinball museum and the African American history museum upstairs, and both were pleasantly sized - big enough to feel like you had a meaningful experience, small enough to avoid museum fatigue. Staff were friendly and helpful throughout the building, and there were photography exhibits to peruse in the hallways, too. Overall a lovely place to visit. I'd come back and bring my family, and spend more time in all of the museums on offer!
The O. Winston Link & History Museum of Western Virginia showcases the cultural heritage of the region through exhibits featuring weapons, costumes, classic steam trains and photography. Visitors can watch a short movie that offers insight into the logistics and planning behind Mr. Links' iconic photographs. The museum also sells high-quality posters at reasonable prices. This interesting museum has a lot of cool history and beautiful photography on display, making it worth a trip for anyone interested in learning more about local history.
Very nice been remodled cool place for kids

Friendly staff especially the volunteer retired railroad man. Great photos. You don’t have to like trains! The story of OWL and the amazing photos a stand alone.
Daniel Daniel — Google review
Charming museum that was once a train station dedicated to one man’s love of the now gone steam engine train where his passion was captured in the impressive grandeur photographs he took from the 1950’s. A master of light and engineering, Ogle spent much of his life documenting one of America’s lasting splendor in the era of the locomotive not just visually, but w audio as well where he released a number of recordings of the sounds of the traveling train through the West Virginian mountains. One can imagine his excitement from the surviving recordings, where you can here the glee he expressed in his voice while riding atop. You are transposed by his artistry to a time when life was simpler but somehow a lot more evolved than where we are today.

The museum houses the marvelous work of Mr. Link. Anyone who appreciates art through the lens of photography must stop by the Link Museum. Wow!
Adam McClelland — Google review
There are some wonderful photos taken by O. Winston Link here, but the museum was rearranging the exhibits and a lot of items were not on display or were on the floor waiting to be hung up. Some of the greatest things I wanted to see were in storage.

Went to this museum on a airline layover. If you like classic steam trains or photography you will love this museum. The short movie is a must. You will gain a full appreciation for the logistics and planning for Mr. Link’s photos. The museum sells high quality posters of many of O Winston Links iconic photographs at very reasonable prices. Your only disappointment might is that they are sold out of your favorite one.

We started at the front desk of the visitors center. Linda was friendly, welcoming and super helpful with suggestions on what to see and where to eat lunch. We chose to purchase the combination ticket for the O. Winston Link Museum and The Virginia Museum of Transportation. We started with the O. Winston Link Museum. It is full of beautiful photos from O. Winston Link and others! There was also a large vintage hat exhibit that was fun to see. My husband and I spent 2 hours here. We learned how Link made his photos and how he got started in photography. The displays of his equipment was fascinating . The 30 minute film about his life at the end of the tour is worth the time it takes to watch it because you learn so much more about him. There was an exhibit of photos from amateur and professional photographers. As well as many other items that reflect the history of Roanoke. Highly recommend a visit here when in Roanoke!
Brenda McMath — Google review
As a Rail-fan and Lionel train collector, this museum has it all. I had always thought the N&W 611 was the classiest and finest steam engine ever built, compared to the SP 4449, the Chessie 614, the NYC J1 Hudson. The photography and settings of a bygone era are all here. Take your time to browse and enjoy the collection.
Lew Nuzzie — Google review
It's a very small but informative and well-kept museum about the history of Roanoke and one of its main industries: railroads. The museum doesn't have much for anyone who is more hands-on, although there were little areas with Lincoln logs and other toys and a typewriter that one could write with.
O. Winston Link photographed and recorded the details of the last few years of steam engines being used in Southwestern Virginia. His photographs and detailed descriptions of his photography process and the people and trains he photographed are kept on display.

Interesting exhibit on modern architectural design of cars, trains, planes, and buildings. We found some books and old maps in the gift store that we bought. Sleepy but interesting to us on a genealogy research trip.
It was my first experience riding horses on the trails at Carvins Cove. The trails were maintained very well. I do not recommend going barefoot you had to ride some gravel rode to get to some of the trails. I really enjoyed the Enchanted Forest trail and the Arrowhead trail. I passed 4 bikers who were all very nice and stopped their bikes for the horses. I look forward to exploring more trails in the area. It is an incredible hill workout for your horse on Arrowhead.

Love this place for the peaceful waters in the reservoir in a kayak or canoe & the MTB trails on the Bennett Springs side. Enchanted Forest is beautiful & Rock & Roll is a must ride. Hard to hold back all the woo hoo’s & yee haws on that fun flowy trail!!

An enormous nature reserve that has so many trails and was extremely clean. Very few people here. Will definitely return for the full 14 mile hike around the mountain. We hiked up brush mountain via the hide-e-ho trail, counterclockwise from the parking area is the way to go.

This place has incredible biking trails. I did a 12 mile hike. The trail is in great shape. It had lots of loops and ups and downs to keep things interesting. There are no views, but there are many lovely stream crossings.

Had a great technical ride on the bike trails. Serious double black action!! Just the Right Gear down the road is a legit bike shop as well!!
Nathan Chapman — Google review
If there's a better way to spend a morning I'm not sure what it is. Very easy to locate and very well maintained. Just a short walk into the woods and the only sounds you hear are birds and the buzzing of insects and the occasional squirrel. There is the occasional aircraft passing overhead but it is quiet.
$3/person is not a lot to ask for considering the beauty of the area and the well maintained and well marked trails. I plan to come back.

The mountain bike trails here are spectacular, well maintained and diverse! There is something for every skill level. The shear quantity of great trails make this one of the premier mountain biking destinations in the region. The natural beauty and fresh air make for a PERFECT bicycling environment!

Great biking trails. Forest fire road is phenomenal workout.
Great down location for craft beer with indoor and outdoor seating, easy parking access and really good beer. No food on site but you can order from a local restaurant and they will deliver. “Cmon Rye Lean” is especially good.

My wife and I were recently in town for a small family reunion. Needing a bit of a great from, you know, the family, we absconded to Big Lick for a brew or two on an absolutely gorgeous early-March evening.
Big Lick is a spacious brewery, both inside and out, with a wide range of beers on tap, and seemingly as many options of dogs to pet out on the patio, always a plus.
The outdoor area must be incredible in the summer, and it was perfect on this night as well. A nice, chill vibe with some pretty good beers and conversations to match.
Kyle Pucciarello — Google review
The outdoor seating area is awesome. The music is usually great. But the beer is not good! The seltzers are never carbonated enough either. I've tried many different styles because I want to like this place. My other 20-something-year-old friends feel the same way. In my opinion, they should try to figure out a couple of basic beers that are good then mess around with the fancy and experimental brews.
Joel Watson — Google review
Came here on a Sunday afternoon. Beer was decent and prices ok. They had a local musician there which was nice. Only 1 tv for football. Ambiance was cool with outdoor fire places.
John McIntosh — Google review
Really liked this place! Great prices, great bartenders, great beer. I came in less than an hour before closing and they humored me with a flight, which I know is a bit of a pain. Bartender was very friendly and helpful, and beer was pretty dang good. Definitely was much more impressed with this place than Golden Cactus, and honestly wish I had come straight here instead of stopping there because this place is way more worth your money. Highly recommend for beer lovers visiting roanoke!
Payton B — Google review
This place feels like home to me whenever I'm hanging out in Roanoke. That is almost entirely because of how wonderful the staff is (I don't simply mean the service, I mean they are genuinely a great group of people).
But beyond the staff is a great beer selection (I'm a fan of stouts and sours, so I can speak for those), a comfortable vibe inside and out, and wifi! And there's almost always at least one person with a cute dog hanging around. They also get some good musicians in (and pay them a respectful amount)
It's a great place to hang with people or to come solo and bring some work to do. Love it

Stopped in for dinner and beer while on a road trip from Delaware to Western NC. We really enjoyed our time here! Located downtown, Big Lick has indoor and outdoor seating. They have a diverse beer menu, and had live music when we were there. The beer that I had was really good. They also have several local restaurants that offer QR code orderering from your table. Note: Parking can be a little tricky. They have something like 35 spots available but those fill quickly. People were having to search while we were there. Still, if we lived in the area, we would be here often. We hope to return.

Great little indoor/outdoor gathering place. Nearby restaurants can deliver a variety of food. Revolving beer selections are always nice to explore. Live music is usually on tap, too.

Very cool place to visit, have some good locally brewed beer, sit down at the very nice patio and enjoy the sunny weather and cold beer. 😎☀️🍺🍻👌🏻

In town and friends suggested Big Lick as a good go to. First time here on a cold March. There was a huge outdoor patio for warmer times and the inside had plenty of seating throughout. There was a live band on this occasion with a younger crowd for a jam punk style atmosphere. The brews were good and the inside itself was decorated nicely. It was super busy but we never had a problem getting drinks and moving around. The noise was a bit intense for the building but all in all a good stop for a local feel and draft beers. Cheers !!

Big Lick is one of four breweries we visited in Roanoke and was probably our favorite. They offer a great space with patio seating as well as seats at the bar. The service was fantastic- a very friendly and knowledgeable bartender and tasting room manager. I was a bit disappointed they did not have a New England IPA on draft but the beers they did offer made up for that! 🍻 Definitely worth a visit!

We walked over here from across the street of another Brewery. We were pretty surprised that this place was pretty dead. It was a Sunday around 1230ish, but our previous stop was very busy. Our major surprise was because we though the beer here was so much better. We ordered food from Tunca, which is a restaurant across from BLBC which they have partnered with. We sat around and had a great time. They have a hugh outdoor area our front. Numerous fire pits and seating areas. They also have a hugh parking area, which makes coming here a bit easier. We enjoyed our food and washed it all down with the fine beverages of BLBC. Looks like on certain nights they have live music and music bingo, which looked like a blast. Great place.to come hang and enjoy some premium adult beverages!
The Mill Mountain Zoo is a year-round attraction featuring over 50 species of exotic and native animals, birds, and reptiles. It offers visitors the chance to experience the wonders of nature in a beautiful setting. Despite some negative reviews in the past, recent visitors have found it to be an enjoyable and educational experience for all ages. The friendly staff provide excellent care for the animals, which are well looked after in their natural habitats.
It was our first time there and after seeing some questionable reviews I was skeptical. I took my 9 year old there last Monday and we loved it!! Very friendly staff, loved the animals and the scenery was beautiful!
Zane Ayres — Google review
Surprisingly large variety of animals and exhibits for what seemed to be a smaller local zoo! Favorites were the bald eagle, Burmese python, blue dart frogs, lynx, red panda… I can’t choose a single top favorite! That said, the reptiles & amphibians house was one major highlight for me seeing as I’m a big fan of frogs & snakes. We came in the winter so some animals weren’t out where they would be visible to guests, and some parts of the zoo were temporarily closed, but there was still a lot to see even so. On the plus side, it was not at all crowded on a cold weekday morning.
Had fun briefly checking out the gift shop too, they had a lot of cute plushies. There was an on site food stand, but it was closed during our visit. Likewise for the train tours. I would definitely come here again, especially in the warmer months when there will be even more to see.
Riverly Twardy — Google review
Admission is $10 for Adults. We booked it online & saved a couple of $. We spent an hour here. It's a small Zoo, better for the kids not adults. We waited for the train ride but it was closed for the season. Some of the cages were really small such as for the Burmese python, Snow Leopard.

A nice, quiet, shaded diversion in Roanoke! The zoo has some unique exhibits, and has quite a bit to offer all things considered. Even so, if you are accustomed to Asheboro zoo or something similar, this isn't apples to apples. It's fun in its own right, though, and if you take time to read the exhibits you can be through in about an hour. No complaints here, but I didn't give it the full 5 starts because it is a touch expensive considering the size.

Though a smaller zoo it was a nice first time for our kids. Staff friendly and kind. Zoo was kept nice and clean. Animals were well taken care of. I do recommend it for a short weekend outing, it was fun.

I haven't been here since I was a kid. I came back from Virginia Beach to see my family and came for a visit with my husband so he can see the part of my childhood. I hate that I missed Ruby. She peaked my interest in animals as a kid and I follwed her my whole life and have all the newspaper clippings about her. We enjoyed our visits. It was great seeing the animals being thoroughly taken care of!!

This place was $10 a person if you buy online it’s $9.95 I believe. It’s little and you do a lot of walking! Wear comfy shoes! There are parts of the zoo that are not stroller friendly.

I've lived here for several years and my first time to the zoo was enjoyable. I wish I had gotten to two zookeeper names that was so helpful and informative on the animals as we admired the eagle Elsie. You both made the visit that much more exciting. The little zoo in comparison to the one from my home area the Bronx was all the better due to the great staff. Keep up the great job caring for the animals and guest that visit.

This was fun the kids loved it. This zoo is on the very top of a mountain. Never seen anything like it they have a little train that you can ride around the park over seeing the mountain view of down town it was really cool and it wasn't much money either. We will definitely go back again next time we are in the Roanoke Virginia are.

This was a nice small zoo. It would be good as a date night. Dont expect it to take a long time to go through the entire zoo. It takes about 1 hour to complete. The signs were very good, and I felt like I had learned a lot. The place was nice and clean. There were some stairs that would make it hard for a wheelchair or a stroller, but the park is small enough that you can walk around to still see the animals.
What a beautiful church with a magnificent atmosphere. We attended the Christmas Eve mass and it was so lovely. The music and sound inside transports you to a heavenly realm. This was our first time visiting and we were so glad we did.

Beautiful place & kind people BUT, I wish they preached GOD'S Word & His definitions of a Christian, instead of their own. SHOCKED to hear them state in their service that John 3:3 Christians were explicitly NOT welcome to take communion. Then they only did HALF of what Christ commanded in 1 Corinthians 11:25 (which all Christians are to do in remembrance of Christ).
I pray that congregation reads the Word of God for themselves, and upholds it to a proper & higher authority, than what any person or man made organization states.

I attended Mass twice at the Basilica of St. Andrew and it's a beautiful, reverent sanctuary in which to worship.
The Homily was very well thought out and addressed the way in which the Gospel reading applied to the major events that were occuring in the world.
Everyone was so warm & welcoming! I only wish that I lived in Roanoke so that I could go there on a regular basis!

Like it's parishioners, this church is absolutely beautiful, inside and out. We were instantly welcomed and made to feel that we belong. It is obvious that parishioners really appreciate this glorious church when describing the history and renovations behind it. Honored to be in time to attend a weekday noon mass which we thoroughly enjoyed.

Such a beautiful find. The pastor was very welcoming and informed us if we came two weeks later the scaffolding for the interior renovations would have been gone. Despite the scaffolding it was so beautiful! I wish we could have spent more time looking around, but we went on a Sunday and I didn't want to interrupt anyone's worship. So worth a look if you have time.

Got to view this beautiful building one day, right as a Father was locking up for the evening. He was very kind to show us the inside, and shared some information about the history of the building. Worth a vist if you haven't ever seen it!
Splash Valley is a great destination for outdoor swimming during summer. It features two water slides, a children's spray area, and a lazy river that offer hours of entertainment to visitors. The concession stand provides various snacks at reasonable prices, including the option to purchase an entire pizza for $16.50. There are also changing rooms with showers available on site. While some may find prices high, many would agree it is worth every penny spent for the experience.
Had a wonderful ☺ time all summer on the weekends at Splash Valley with my little buddy J'Dyn. Played tag, swam, rode the lazy river, he especially enjoyed the water slide. Can't wait to go back this year. Don M.

Nice facility. They have friendly staff, and it's always clean. They used to have more classes offered, but...COVID. They still have a lot, but it's hard to get to them if you work full time. Awesome machines and free weights. Indoor 2-lane track to run or walk. Beautiful basketball courts (6 hoops) with pickup games going almost constantly.

Had a great time sunning and watching the kids play in all the fun water features. Staff was friendly and helpful. Concessions were quick and the food was great and very reasonably priced. Lots of water features for the kiddos, both little and big, including fountains, slides from small to tall, and lazy river. All in all a great time was had!

We LOVED this place. We brought our 4 year old and twin 16 month olds, and it was perfect.
The splash pad area is big enough to explore but small enough that you can always see your kids. The slides kept the kids busy and amused.
Our 4-year-old loved the "big" yellow slide. The kids took turns "jumping" off of the walls and swimming around with us.
If we loved closer, we'd have a season pass.
There's plenty of chairs, and lots and lots of sun. The area is clean and well maintained. It's a great price for a long day of fun.
They are pretty strict about the food and drink policy. We had to pour out our water bottles and put our chewy granola bars in the car. But otherwise, we've no complaints.

This place is an absolute blast. Our 1.5 and 3.5 year olds had a blast. They played for hours till they just couldn't go anymore. Being from wv I wish we had something this fun. We came just for here and got a hotel for the night. (Don't stay LA Quinta) Best weekend trip we have taken in a long time. We were a little shocked at the prices but It was def worth every cent. Wife watched the kids while I hit the biggest water slide. The concession has plenty of snacks and prices are good considering the type of place you are. You can buy a whole pizza for 16.50. Can't remember the other prices. They have chairs all around and you can shower in the changing rooms (things we didn't know)

Prices are super reasonable. It wasn't as crowded as the parking lot made me think it would be. A storm popped up during our visit so they made everybody clear out. BUT they gave each of us a rain check and we can go back anytime this season for free which I appreciated. Most places don't do that. My only small complaint is that the "current river" didn't have floats and it was more just your body going in circles. Not quite lazy enough for me :)

Much fun for my kids! My only wish is they had better birthday packages! Having 1 hr for food, cake, ice cream, singing happy birthday and gifts is extreme and not a good deal. 2 hrs party room or tent then swimming for another 2 is more ideal and realistic so nobody is feeling rushed after spending good money! Other than that what a good time. Oh the indoor pool could use some fixing up! A paint job is cheap and goes a long way to spruce things up

I was so impressed with the lifeguards! Each one patrols a certain area. They are constantly scanning the pool. And they were nice when kids accidentally did something they weren’t supposed to do. My 12yo and 8yo enjoyed themselves immensely...as did my 42yo. 😂 We will definitely be back!

Fun little water park with a spash pad and slides for kids, a lazy river, a medium slide, and 2 big water slides. There's a concession stand (pizza, snacks, drinks) and locker room. Kona Ice was also parked out front for Icee's.

Great little indoor and outdoor city market with 🍑🍓 fruit and 🥦🥕🧅 vegetable stalls, local art, and indoor restaurant stalls with food from all over the world. The indoor section has ♿ handicap accessible seating and 🚻 restrooms. Perfect spot for a weekend stroll and shopping.

Gorgeous outdoor space with farmers market on the weekend. The local law enforcement should do more to keep the homeless population from harassing pedestrians though.

Roanoke has a great downtown and the City Market is a big part of that. We have enjoyed the Market as both an event and a space. The shopkeepers and the patrons are all friendly and you come across some pretty cool stuff.

Great place place to spend a couple of hours walking and shopping. Just be careful when sitting at the picnic tables in the center square area. They are not clearly marked and we got run off after finding they are reserved for the restaurants o. The square.

The family went to scrambled for breakfast this morning. Parking was surprisingly easy. Service was fast and friendly. Several members of our party got the vanilla french toast, which is amazing. I got a pancake the size of my plate plus a fresh fruit bowl. The fresh fruit is a welcome addotion to the breakfast menu. Prices were very reasonable.

Spring in the Market is very nice. Every season brings different vibes, vendors, and festivals.
I like to go window shopping, and dine there.
Inside the Market Square building, there are several good eateries.
One of my favorite restaurants in the square is Ernie's. It's a cool, friendly and tasty place for breakfast and lunch.
I highly recommend visiting the Square, and soak up some local fun.
The Science Museum of Western Virginia, located within Center in the Square, offers a wide-ranging exploration of the scientific world. Visitors can enjoy aquariums, rooftop gardens and patio, and an exotic butterfly habitat. The museum provides opportunities for hands-on experiences with various animals such as box turtles, bearded dragon lizards, and corn snakes. Knowledgeable staff members are available to assist visitors during their visit.
This is WONDERFUL place to have a kids bday party! There was tons to do and everyone had a blast! The staff was very friendly and helpful. We did an animal interaction and the animal handlers were knowledgeable and good with the kids. They let you play as long as you like after the two hour window that you have the party room. 5 stars, great place.

This place is very sad and run down. We visited some years ago when it was amazing, so we were very sad and disappointed, having driven quite a ways to visit. Half of the exhibits were broken, unstaffed, or incomplete (see no beach balls for the one exhibit below, and the missing VR set). The touch pools are dry and/or don't exist anymore. Even the giant Lincoln Logs were missing a roof piece. Other exhibits had zero explanation See the case with the audio tape; there was no explanation for this whole room! The parakeet garden was closed, I'm told for renovations. This was not stated on the website. It seemed so run down, I wouldn't be surprised if they were just going out of business.
Rebecca Price — Google review
I'm so thankful to have this resource available within a 30 minute drive. Everything is so fun and is all presented in an interactive and multi age accessible way. Thank you!

Big let down for the price. Exhibits were closed, malfunctioning, or dirty. The little children's room was unsafe and unsanitary for letting little ones crawl around.
Will probably not be coming back and instead highly recommend Amazement Square for a much better family experience.
Tyler Wilhoit — Google review
I'm not sure of all the hype. Large building but hardly anything to write home about. We were done in about 20 min, and with the $70 price for 2 adults and 1 child, I left feeling ripped off. The parakeet feeding was the only cool thing about this place. There is a very small 1 room science center in my hometown that has way more stuff to do, and it's only $3. Very disappointing.
Michelle — Google review
The majority of the exhibits were out of order, missing components, unexplained or had nothing to do with science . I (19) and my brother (16) went this weekend expecting a science museum but I would describe it as a children's activity center.. and not a great one at that. The few interesting things had been there since I was a kid and everything new was lame even for children. Sad and disappointing, not worth the gas $ to get there. Aquariums on the first floor are cool but those are free.
Down with Nazeem — Google review
Many of the displays were closed due to understaffing and things being broken. The aquarium where you can pet horseshoe crabs was also restricted. There was only one person on duty to tend to two floors, and we were told basically we were out of luck regarding interacting with any of the animals. I'm glad we have a membership so we can come back but if you paid for a one-day ticket it would not be worth it. There are no cleanliness protocols in place if you are concerned about that. In the past the parakeet exhibit was free but now it costs upwards of 10.50, including a convenience fee, which I find a little ridiculous because we are at the place and there's really no convenience to be added. Also as we have a membership I would expect it to be a better value than that. Other customers were very reckless and disrespectful of the exhibits but again there were no staff to help monitor that. I think you could visit once and be pleased with that but anything more than that is going to be boring or Mundane as they don't have a lot of hands on things. Who ready to pay extra for every little thing as a nickel and dime you in addition to advance price which is kind of hefty.

I love museums, this one has a free aquarium and koi pond. The science museum is an ik experience more fun for the kiddos. Most everything is broken or not charged. Still an ok experience 👌 there are parakeets and talking Macaws you can interact with. If you receive food stamps your entry is FREE! There is a kids corner with a slide and activity center which is nice. My 4 year old really enjoyed it. Good rainy day activity. CLOSED MONDAYS
The local Yokle — Google review
Most of the exhibits were broken from the destructive children that were unsupervised. The tide pools were closed and so was the parakeet room. It was $38 for two adults to get in with military discount. We had a good time playing with the huge light Brite, but most of the lights didnt work anymore. So disappointing and expensive. Wont be back and dont recommend until the get the exhibits fixed. I would relate my experience to a science based Chuck-E-cheese... bring ear muffs and hand sanitizer.
Kelly Lott — Google review
A decent experience for adults but definitely geared more towards children (not a problem, we expected that going in). Animals and exhibits are interesting but a few of the interactive ones felt pretty gimmicky, particularly the "brain wave" one which showed "brain activity" even when it wasn't hooked up to anything.
Would likely be a good experience for larger groups, but for small groups the staff seem rather disinterested and a lot of the opportunities sit unused. Recommend getting tickets to see all the other museums at the same time (though it should really be one ticket for the entire thing) or else you aren't going to be there for very long.
In good news though, on a weekday there is no wait for anything.
Keysen Markley — Google review
Planetarium is main reason we came 2 staff told us it was open today. And it was still closed for the new , I was extremely disappointed with my experience. I had high expectations for this museum, but it fell short on several aspects.
First and foremost, the organization and presentation of the exhibits were subpar. Many displays were poorly labeled or lacked any explanation whatsoever. It was frustrating to not have a clear understanding of what I was looking at. Additionally, there were no audio guides or interactive elements to enhance the visitor's experience and provide a deeper understanding of the artifacts on display.
Moreover, the museum staff seemed disinterested and unhelpful. I encountered several occasions where I had questions or needed assistance, but the staff appeared unapproachable and disengaged. Their lack of enthusiasm and knowledge made me feel unwelcome and undermined my overall enjoyment of the visit.
Another major issue was the pricing. The admission fee was quite high for what was offered. Considering the lackluster exhibits and the unhelpful staff, I found it difficult to justify the cost. I expected a better value for my money, and unfortunately, I left the museum feeling unsatisfied and disappointed.
During my visit, I looked for opportunities to voice my concerns or provide feedback, but there was no apparent mechanism to do so. This lack of accountability and responsiveness did not give me confidence that my concerns would be addressed or acted upon.
To improve the museum experience, I would strongly suggest implementing clearer labeling and explanations throughout the exhibits. Audio guides or interactive elements could greatly enhance visitors' understanding and engagement. Additionally, it is crucial that the museum invests in training its staff to be more knowledgeable, approachable, and willing to assist visitors.
In conclusion, I regret to say that my experience at the local museum was disappointing. The lack of organization, unhelpful staff, and high cost did not meet my expectations. I hope that the museum management takes these concerns seriously and makes the necessary improvements to provide a more enjoyable and educational experience for future

Such a great birthday experience.
All the kids had an opportunity to pet:
1) Box turtle
2) Bearded Dragon lizard
3) Corn Snake
There were other choices, these are the ones we picked.
The staff were great, very knowledgeable & helpful with the kids.
All around great, we would do it again for sure!

Today's visit to the science museum was another disappointment. Listed as one of the activities geared for children under five offered in Roanoke, I hope nobody takes visitors there. Most of the exhibits did not work. The facility was dark and very unclean. There wasn't a single person working aside from the counter person. The overhead lights weren't even on in the discovery room. The room for toddlers housed mostly broken toys and many of those are smaller than marbles (unsafe). Roanoke boasts this as a fun educational center when in truth it is a hodge podge of less than engaging cast off ideas from decades ago. It needs to be closed until somebody can breathe new life into what should be vibrant and colorful with amazing experiences for our children. What an embarrassment Roanoke.

This museum was in a sad state when we visited for the first time in March 2024. Our family of 4 paid $57 for the basic entry. Dust bunnies, massive scum on fish tanks made the facility seem uncared for and Tupperware sized containers with tarantulas seemed very inadequate.

Very unfriendly staff at box office. One lady closest to the door was so rude. Guess she was afraid she had to do a little work and pointed at the lady next to her and saying “Tickets right there” in a very rude voice . And that lady was no ray of sunshine either. You think for that position you’d find some more friendly employees since that is the first encounter of a paying customer. The museum was a good experience the kids enjoyed it. I give 2 stars cause your employees need help. Advise is buy tickets online. Thank you.

We had a great day overall except for the parking! The parking situation was pretty chaotic. We had to park and walk through tall grass because the parking area wasn’t mowed.

Had a fun time at Jeter Farm today. As soon as I got out of my car I was approached by one of their sweet dogs. We started off with a tractor ride to the corn maze, where we got lost over and over again. There is an activity field to keep children entertained. The grounds are perfectly kept and the views are amazing. The staff is really nice and friendly.

The farm is a beautiful site to see everything is well kept, Also the staff we interacted with we’re very nice humans.I went with my middle school age child whilst we had fun there wasn’t a lot to do for older kids/ people we talked a to make entertainment amongst each other. We enjoyed the corn maze, hayride, also said the heck with it an went down the big slides… it was very entertaining for the little kids around from what I could see. The pumpkin patch was cool to see I would’ve assumed a pumpkin would be included in admission but it wasn’t so that kinda sucked. The food was ok we had hotdogs($5ea), cup of macaroni cheese ($3 maybe $4) , and kettle corn ($6 large) Parking wasn’t bad just have to be careful :) a lot of little ones out there!

Overall just okay as an adult without kids. I was largly content. Not a whole lot for the adult to do. Corn maze was nice, and beautiful sunflowers. Website mentioned apple cider, but wasn't really written on any menu. Got a hot cup, for about two bucks. Like that they have local crafts in the shop. But the line was odd. It forked and there wasn't much clear idea to where the line was supposed to go. Hay ride was great because we had a dogo copilot. (Image)

I was a bit worried about the dog situation as several of the others have stated before me. I however didn't bring a pet. I was witness to the golden retriever dog with shorter legs (off leash) wrestling with another dog (on a leash) blk/wht border collie. The pet parents of the collie were visualy upset. I was standing in line for a wristband and was told by a staff member, "oh that's just the farm dogs." When it's apparent the other dog (collie) was definitely not.
I think it's fair to say that any pet or resident dog that is an instigator should stay home for a public event. 🤔 Not fair for one to ruin it for all.

The Jefferson Center is a beautiful venue that showcases live performances of various genres such as opera, jazz, and popular music in a 1920s style. Though the acoustics are commendable, the accessibility for handicapped individuals could be better. The parking lot requires a two-block uphill hike and main seating is only accessible by climbing stairs. Restrooms during intermission are located downstairs while an elevator is available for those who need it.
This is a really nice local venue. They book all kinds of interesting music acts that can't or don't want to fill a larger arena. I think it's very much worth supporting the Jefferson Center for the unique and wonderful cultural opportunities it can provide. Staff are very friendly and helpful as well.

This was my first visit and I enjoyed it. I think the acoustics we're good and I had a seat in the middle of the center section but I could see just fine.
I was a little disappointed in the accessibility. While parking was in a designated lot, it was about a 2-block hike, somewhat uphill, which is not something I am able to do easily. Inside, main seating is up a flight of stairs. During the intermission the rest rooms I was directed to were all back downstairs. At that point I was able to locate an elevator, which was very welcome. It was a very nice theater, but I didn't expect to have to struggle so much to get in, and then get around.

I have walked past this building a lot and I think the outside of the building is beautiful and the yard is maintained very well. I saw a falcon resting high on a tree limb last spring and butterflies in the yard this summer. I didn't go inside or attend a performance there so I gave it 3 stars out of 5 based on its outside.

This was such a great venue to see the Nutcracker ballet! The historic building was a large draw in choosing this performance. The seats were great on the balcony. We were in row E and had a great view. However, the row in front had more leg room.

I enjoyed watching the Nutcracker. Beautifully decorated.
My only suggestion is to not sell bagged chips. It was very distracting to sit next to 3 children under the age of 8 crunching and slurping their drinks during the 2nd half of the performance. Along with the noise of the chip bag. 🤦

Nicely remodeled school auditorium. It is not very friendly for those with mobility issues. The auditorium is quite a distance from the entrance. Ticketing process is antiquated. You have to wait in line for printed tickets at the on call window. Performance was excellent!

I've been to this lovely establishment several times, but seeing the legendary Loretta Lynn was my first concert here. As one who appreciates historical buildings, I expected to love this gorgeous theatre. What was unexpected was how impressive the acoustics were and what a delightful intimate experience this place provides! I'm exceedingly grateful to have seen her performance in this setting. It is obvious that the Jefferson Center cares about its patrons as much as its artists and performers as evidenced by the care taken to insure a smooth flow throughout the evening. Movement from the lobby to the restrooms to the seats was relatively quick. The courteous ushers are plentiful, the bartenders were swamped but efficient, well stocked and very friendly. Even the emcee was entertaining! Thank you so much for a consistently beautiful visit every time. Love this place!
Valley View Mall is a two-story indoor shopping mall that attracts locals with over 100 stores, chain restaurants and a multiplex. This mall is another one of a dying breed that is thriving. It's nice to visit a mall that is as busy as malls that I remember when I was younger.
All of the stores were in business, and there was a food court. It is a great experience to be able to shop at the various stores and try on clothes in person.

Hadn't been to a mall in a while, visiting friends and we decided to go. The stores we went to were very helpful and had a lot of fun things that we like, and I was able to get a few things I especially liked that I can't get at home, due to the size of the town and the fact there are few stores like these available there. Really happy with my visit. Nice and clean, well-maintained, lovely decorative displays as well as very clean bathrooms which made me very happy to see. It was comfortably cooled as well. I love read mountain!!! The hike is easy to moderate and there’s many trails to choose from to get to the summit. This helps if you want a harder hike or if you want some solitude. The hike can range from 2-3 miles to the summit depending on which trail you take. There’s also a bench at the summit which wasn’t always there. I honestly don’t see the need for a bench up there as there are plenty of rocks to sit on. Overall a beautiful mountain and a beautiful view that overlooks Roanoke, mainly the hollins area. You can also watch airplanes take off and land from the summit!

Short but can be intense climb if you take the red and yellow trails. I'd recommend having hiking boots with ankle support. The blue trail is a nice gentle incline. It is about 2.1 miles to the rock cliffs and you can go further but not as good of a view.

Explore Park boasts 9 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails as well as a boat launch and visitor center. Visitors can stay in yurts equipped with amenities such as a triple queen bunk tower, toilet, sink, fridge, microwave and coffee pot. The mattresses resemble those found at summer camp but the bathhouse for showers is only steps away and offers four clean single person shower rooms with high-quality materials. Overall, this county park leaves a positive impression on visitors seeking outdoor recreation activities.
Nice little campground in a great Explore Park. At the visitor center I saw kids on the tree tops adventure, Even though it was raining. The visitor center threw me off, because it's the blue Ridge Parkway, Visitor Center. The staff are great, friendly and so helpful. They have the little dome cabin that I was in, bunkhouses the hold even more, and yurts which I have yet to check out. Both my cabin and the shower were disabled accessible. Stayed for 2 nights in April to check out mountain biking and hiking in Explore Park. The yurts are indeed very close to the parking and to each other but that was clear from looking at the photos on their website. Triple queen bunk tower, toilet and sink, fridge microwave and coffee pot. A roll of tp, a couple trash bags and paper towels in a dispenser (like a public restroom) were provided. Mattresses remind me of summer camp. Bathhouse for showers just a few steps away. Four single person large shower rooms that were extremely clean with quality materials. Overall impressive for a county park.

My wife & I were visiting Roanoke in early December for a wedding and learned about Illuminights at Explore Park online. We purchased timed tickets in advance. The parking and admission went smoothly. We loved the massive use of Christmas lights decorating the buildings, trees and especially "The Path". It's so hard to convey how well they created different areas accompanied w synchronized lighting, Xmas music, or scenes of outdoor activities like camping or fishing & woodland animals found in the Roanoke County. The relaxing stroll through an amazing light extravaganza is a memorable experience. I only wished the grandchildren were with us.

Wonderful experience. I went for the Treetop Quest. There were 4 and a half zipline trails as the most difficult trail has 2 endings. Please register online for this before you arrive as there is a difference in the fee.
There is also a dinosaur trail which I couldn't explore as it was closed.
In all, the staff was very friendly which augmented the experience.

Went to scope out what exciting "Treetop Quest" Zip line courses look like for nybgranddaughters. The whole setup is amazing and I know my granddaughters will love this !! The staff showed me around and Abbey on the front office gave me all the info I needed !! I think I'll participate with them when they come in !! It just looks like a blast !!!

We visited the Illuminights last night. It was a wonderful experience. Roanoke has done a great job turning the park into a winter wonderland! It's a great place to bring the kids. Several vendors were there selling coffee, hot chocolate, cookies, and many other things. The lights were beautiful! The park also offers many hiking trails that are really easy to walk. A couple of the trails go all the way down to the river. If you decide to attend the Illuminights, we will need to purchase tickets ahead of time through the Explore Park website. The tickets are $17.50 each. I hope you go, it's a fun time!

My family loved the treetop obstacle courses at Explore Park. My 6 year old had fun at the kids course and trampoline net. My 14, 12, and 9 year old children loved all the other obstacles and zip-line course. They made sure harnesses were correct prior to admitting you on the course and the training at the start gave me enough confidence to let my kiddos "fly". I also tried most of the courses and I'm a big chicken, but still managed to have fun. I did hit my leg on the platform when zip-lining, but had no other injuries to report. Do not attempt if you are afraid of heights, very out of shape, or don't think you can handle being on a tiny platform 100+ feet off the ground that sways! I can assure you...it definitely scared me, buy my kiddos had no fear and absolutely loved it!

My partner and I are making our way south on a road trip/camping trip. This is one of our favorite places we've stopped so far! It was great to sleep in these cabins, they were comfortable, super clean, and had everything we needed! (Not to mention the a/c!). We can't wait to come back on our next road trip! And the bathrooms and showers were so clean.

The grandkids loved it. The motion activated dinosaurs made it more real. Wonderful job.

Stunning views on the way up to the park and a fantastic beer & wine spot with fire pits that have cozy outdoor seating! Very fun vibe and history @ Three Creeks Brewpub!

Don’s Cab-inns was a true gem to find! Cleanest campground we have ever been too. Staff was friendly and very helpful, especially when I lost my phone at the brewery. 😬 Highly recommend this location. Site D5 was spacious and level. Can’t wait to visit again!

We really enjoyed Illuminights 2023! Plenty of lights in an outdoor setting while walking through a wooded area. Santa was there for pictures and there was an opportunity to purchase hot cocoa and cookies. Everyone gets to roast marshmallows as well. Remember to bundle up!

We came to experience Illuminights and we were not disappointed! You purchase tickets online with a slated time, they do not accept walk ups. This allows for the walking trail to freely flow and lessen congestion. Christmas music plays throughout the walk. Staff members are everywhere if you have any questions or issues. Several vendors were on site to offer various goodies. I have to say the “Naughty Santa” cookie was the best! The souvenir shop was open to offer local artists goods. I opted for a souvenir ornament.

We went to the Illumilights event in December. SO MANY lights that had everybody in awe. You walk through the set path (for about 20 minutes) taking as many photos as you would like. There were several vendors with food and hot chocolate. Plenty of bathrooms.
