The Mississippi Civil Rights Museum is an interactive exhibition that delves into the state's role in the civil rights movement. It presents little-known facts and diverse viewpoints on Mississippi history. The museum has a great café with excellent customer service, and offers free admission on Sundays. Visitors can also tour the civil rights museum for a deeper understanding of this critical period in American history.
In town for a short visit and was happy to find out Sunday is free day.
This is definitely a powerful moving museum. I highly recommend it to everyone.
It shows how far we have come but it also shows how far we have to go especially now since 45 really brought out the worst in a lot of people.

Amazing museum! The detail and information is incredible. It is very interactive, and there are so many artifacts to look at. There are great films and sound effects. If you want to go through and really take in all the information, you could spend several hours here. Some of it is graphic (out of necessity) but they have lots of signs warning ahead of time. It was $15 for both this and the Mississippi museum, and I found it well worth the price. Also have a great gift shop with lots of local pottery. You can get national park passport stamps at the front desk.

In all sincerity - one of the best museum experiences that we have had.
The docents were very helpful and informative.
The exhibits flowed perfectly around a central open area. The short movies were also high quality.
Highly recommended - 2 to 3 hours for this wing alone. Free parking is available within the attached garage (rear of the building).

This museum is absolutely amazing! It's divided into two parts. One part is Mississippi history and the other part is civil rights history in Mississippi. You need at minimum of 3 hours just to soak in all the exhibits. We learned so much from this experience! I highly recommend during your time in Jackson, Mississippi.

Amazing museum that provides little known information on the civil rights movement especially that related to Mississippi. Highly recommend for those interested in true equality. Decent sized museum. Takes about 4 hours. Awesome exhibits and quick films about important moments.

My latest visit was to view the Emmett Till exhibition. The exhibit was very informative and although I knew a ton of information about Emmett Till, I learned a lot more. If you haven't visited, you must add this museum to your list of places to visit. The museum is free on Sundays and that's the day we visited.

We arrived an hour ahead before closing. And was not able to see everything or read/hear from the people who had to endure the horrendous acts in Mississippi. You need a atleast 2 hours to view everything the museum has to show….I’m truly elated for Mississippi for having our history out for the public to see.

What a hidden gem in Jackson. Chronologically organized, you walk around the museum to different stations, moving to your left. The museum is free on sundays, which is when we went, so we made sure to give a donation. I took an African-American friend from Las Vegas, who had never seen a museum like this. He was moved to the point of tears. Wants to bring his kids back to see it. On a side note, the cafe adjacent to the museum is absolutely spectacular. Gourmet quality southern food in a place you would never expect it.

I live in new jersey, I went to Mississippi just to see lana del rey, I had no expectations, my first time traveling alone but Mississippi surprised me, what a beautiful and peaceful place. a place with a lot of history and emotional charge that I will definitely remember for my entire life. I had not met such kind, polite and nice people in the usa as in Mississippi. I would definitely come back ❤️Muchas gracias Mississippi, te llevo en mi corazón

What a beautiful museum! I spent a Sunday afternoon here back in October ‘23, alone. And in my opinion that’s the best way to actually enjoy the museum- alone! I was able to read and dive deep into everything the museum had to offer. From the landscaping to the amazing art and information within. The staff were amazing and informative! And the greatest part is it’s free on Sundays. Check it out you won’t regret it :) Oh and Happy Black History month!!!!!

As a born & raised Mississippian, I was truly submerged into the history of Mississippi with facts that are less known and less shared. The museum did a fantastic job of sharing true Mississippi history while sharing the view points of the different groups of people involved in the history of the state. My friend and I went on Sunday, which happened to be the free day of the museum. I also enjoyed a light snack at the cafe. They had terrific customer service! The young lady even asked us if we needed anything else before it closed. Next time I will tour the civil rights museum!

What an incredible place, definitely worth the trip. Really viscerally moving, engaging all of your senses, especially auditory. When I was there, the youngest freedom rider ever was speaking to a group of kids, and I got to be lucky enough to listen in. So inspiring and maybe the best museum I’ve ever been to.

We are a Canadian family who stopped at this beautiful and impressive museum to learn about civil rights movement in the USA and Mississippi and we came out astonished by the courage and patience shown by Afro-American people. From slavery era up to now, segregation has been a long and sad story. Hopefully our two boys will have learned from this visit and will embrace diversity and inclusion. Watched the movie Mississippi Burning to understand the past and still in shock but I am glad that there is museum like this one to remind us that we have to be better. Agree with other comments that this museum should be free. We paid 46$ for two adults and two kids, not too expensive but not everyone can afford this amount.

This museum is amazing. There is so much history here. Everyone needs to experience it. Just be prepared cause it's definitely an all-day experience and some.
The Mississippi Museum of Natural Science is an impressive indoor/outdoor facility located in a state park. It offers visitors the opportunity to explore nature through interactive learning exhibits, including an aquarium and greenhouse. The museum's live exhibits feature fish, reptiles, sea turtles and even a two-headed snake. In addition to these displays, there are various games available for visitors to play throughout the different sections of the museum.
Really cool place. The interactive blood suckers exhibit with mosquitoes and leaches was really cool. I went with my 5 year old son and we both really enjoyed all the exhibits. The fish were great, but the baby turtles were ADORABLE. Super convenient as we were in town to go the the childrens museum and this is located on the same road. Definitely plan to return again, when it's drier. We would of walked some of the trails but due to the rain, it was a little too muddy for me. But I definitely want to go back to do the trails... the easy one anyway. Staff was very friendly as well.

Very nice clean museum the exhibits are a little bit small but they also have a lot of live animals which is cool. The best part about the museum in my opinion was the temporary exhibit that was all about the history of video games. I've never seen something like this in a museum before but it would be cool to see stuff like this in more museums
Wisco Simple — Google review
Fun museum, with a beautiful aquarium exhibit. I wish there had been more fossils and fewer video game exhibits, but I get it. However they had some really great pieces.
The nature hikes behind the museum are gorgeous. Hopefully the water levels will be lower next visit, as there were several trails we could not explore.

I'm not gonna lie and say this is an all day, knock your socks off museum cause it's not, but it is amazing and totally worth it.
We had 3 kids, ages 6, 8, and 12. They will enjoyed themselves. My son hasn't stopped talking about the two headed snake and my niece enjoyed the live animals, taking particular interest in a gator that apparently had a jaw injury at some point. My daughter thought the outdoor dinos was absolutely amazing.
It will only take a couple hours to go though, but it was well curated and appealing to both the kids and adults in our group. With it being right next to a wonderful playground, it made for a great afternoon!

In Jackson for the weekend and found this place on google. It took us about an hour and a half. It was neat and cost us $22 (2 adults, 1 youth). If you have young children may take longer to go through but gave us some entertainment for a few hours.

We were very excited to go here! It's such a wonderful museum, they have tons of interactive learning exhibits which is amazing I learned a lot in one visit. There staff is very nice and sweet ,the place is well maintained and clean. They have live exhibits of fish and reptiles, they have a cutest two headed snake and sea turtles that likes interacting with humans. In every section they have different games you can play, also there were sanitizers in different spots which was great they care about the safety of their visitors. One of the best experiences i've had so far.

The space exorbitant is very exciting as well I’m not sure how long it’s going to be there but in itself it’s worth the visit. Great family fun with live animal exits as well.

It was definitely fun for my children, ages 5 & 7. They were able to learn about their natural surroundings here in MS, and they were able to meet Peter the tortoise.
I personally found it a tad underwhelming, as there is so much more natural science in MS that wasn't on display.
Overall 7/10

Blood suckers exhibit was quite cool and very informative. Other exhibits are also well organized and interesting. Quite affordable, 8$/adult and 6$/youth. Lots to see and learn about endangered species in Mississippi. Brilliant to have the museum connected to the nature trail and to playground and Children’s museum. Not 5 stars because we did not feel welcome. From the admission lady who staring at her phone to the gift-shop staff or any other staff we encountered, no smile and no interaction. They were all looking like they wanted to be somewhere else!

Wonderful way to spend a cold, wintery day. I saw and learned about critters I didn't know existed in my backyard aka ponds and I am even more determined than ever not to get back in. 💯😂🤣 Find out about the plants and wildlife you may encounter on your outdoor adventures in the great state of Mississippi. Nature is ever changing, abundant in wildlife, flowers, and creatures in different shapes, sizes, and habitats.

We almost didn’t make it here! The entrance was sort of blocked off, they are doing construction of some kind and originally we were going to try the kids museum but it looked closed, so kept on driving and decided to try this place out. I’m so glad we did! This place is very unassuming and I didn’t not go in with high expectations. There were few people and no line to pay. Fair warning, the animatronic dinosaurs might seem a bit scary for smaller kids, but we made it work. The live animal tanks are a great juxtaposition to the built habitats and honestly I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did! The outdoor trails looked great, and the various dinosaur statues were pretty fun. There was this interactive play station for kids showing a topographic map that was also super entertaining! Overall, highly recommend. Like I mentioned at the beginning, this place is right by the children’s museum so you could easily make a day of it, and there’s also a good sized public park!

As a resident of MS and tour guide at State Capitol, I am very proud of how it represents us. It was designed by Theodore Link in 1901.
The photos were taken during the Book Festival so definitely a much larger crowd than normal.
What I like most is the fact that it has 10 different types of marble; foreign and domestic. There are also 4,750 original light fixtures. It’s built on Beaux-Art Style which was popular from 1890-1920.
Visitors who are touring all state capitols have stated that MS has one of the nicest.
There is so much history under one roof and it’s simply beautiful. I highly recommend visiting if in the area or passing through!

My son and I visited the Mississippi State Capitol during a recent road trip and were very impressed with how lovely and well-maintained the building is. The people of Mississippi can be justifiably proud of this magnificent public building. The employees of the Capitol were extremely welcoming and pleasant and were kind enough to answer our questions about the history of the building. The stone work in the building was most impressive and truly beautiful!

The Mississippi State Capitol is the most magnificent building in the state! The building is a Beaux Arts masterpiece. The Medgar and Myrlie Evers Home National Monument is a remarkable and well-preserved site that pays tribute to the civil rights icon, Medgar Evers. It offers tours by appointment for visitors who want to learn more about the family, the house, and its historical significance. The monument provides an immersive experience that transports you back in time as you walk through the rooms of this historic home.
I visited the home of Medgar and Myrlie Evers during my time in Jackson, Mississippi. It was such an incredible experience. To literally stand on the property that was once occupied by such powerful leaders was truly a great experience. Unfortunately we were unable to go inside due to tours being closed the day we visited. I highly recommend this historic site to anyone that is in the Jackson area.

While the house is not currently open to the public, there is a historic marker as well as photographs and other information on the exterior of the home. The house is where Civil Rights activist Medgar Evers lived with his wife, Myrlie, and his three young children. Unfortunately, it is also where he was assassinated in his driveway while getting something out of his trunk. The house had been owned and managed by Tugoloo College, but recently became part of the National Park Service system. The family moved out of the house to California in 1964 about a year after the assassination. The furnishings you see in the house are sets from the movie, The Ghosts of Mississippi. Stay tuned for activities and more around the reopening of the house to the public.

After visiting the Civil Rights Museum, my husband and I decided to go on a tour to Medgar and Myrlie Evers home. We were greeted by a young lady named Earsley who was volunteering as a tour guide. I couldn't say enough good things about her: She was so knowledgeable of everything regarding the Civil Rights movements, the role of Medgar and Myrlie during the time he was still alive; the atrocious injustices of the time with people that were African American; the situations that many of them endured, not to mention that she answered all our questions with such detail that the tour who was supposed to last around one hour, lasted one hour and a half! We were so amazed at how much this lady knew, that we even told her that she should write a book or become a history teacher...she was that good!!!

We didn’t get to go inside but we did get to walk around the home. To think that such hate existed then and still does now. To take a man’s life because he was a freedom fighter.

The modesty of the Evers’ family home, as well as their prudent choices of vehicles, overwhelmed me with grief when I visited. Evers was a soft-spoken man. He lived in an ordinary home of average size. He survived WWII. He was gunned down in his driveway because of his civil rights work. (July 2021)

Great historical monument. Walking into this home really puts you in the moment in time. The host gave us so much back story on the family, the home and the events that we felt like we knew tbe Evers family personally. She reassured me that it was okay to nurse my toddler who was growing restless and made us feel so welcomed.

Worth the stop, although I wish more progress had been made on the place. Also, where is the museum going to go? I’ve been reading about the heart breaking story of Medgar Evers for over 25 years.
I am a truck driver and while taking my break at the truckstop. I realized Medgar Evers home was 6.6 miles away from the truckstop. I decided to hire a Lyft driver to take me there to pay homage to Medger Evers and his family. The museum was closed. However, you can tell that the home in the yard is cut up really well and I am sure the inside of the home is fabulous. I didn’t need to go inside. I’m leaving a review because it is definitely worth the visit in my opinion.

I visited this home when it was ran by Tougaloo College but wanted to tour since the NPS took over. They plan to restore house to how it looked when the Evers lived there. At the moment it’s the way they did it for the movie “Ghost of MS”.
The restoration is in the beginning phase. They have upgraded the landscape and it’s now wheelchair accessible. They built a new fence and added a walkway to rear of house which is now where you enter. They have new signs in front of house and near carport.
There are several pieces of furniture that are original but most was placed for movie. They have photos of the original bullet hole in refrigerator etc. But the refrigerator in kitchen is not the original one. I’m looking forward to seeing the house once it’s restored to its original state.
There is no admission fee. You must call to make reservation for tour. At the moment the tours are Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 2pm but only if reserved. They are still working to tweak schedule.
A park ranger gave us the tour and even played the piano which is in family but not original to home. She gave historical information on family and spoke about the dedication ceremony on 60th Anniversary in June. Mrs. Myrlie (91 yo) attended. The daughter loves and Jackson MS and heads the foundation.
They also built a nice park near the home. There is no playground but benches and a covered area for picnic. There is a port-a-John. Also there is no public restroom in home.
Highly recommend making a reservation to tour if in the area.
The Mississippi Children's Museum offers interactive exhibits, engaging activities and educational programs for children in the areas of arts, history, health and science. It provides a great indoor activity option for both cold and hot weather with lockers available for convenience. The museum promotes learning through cooperation while also prioritizing safety with parental supervision. Overall, the museum is an enjoyable experience that encourages kids to make wise choices and work together to solve problems.
Nice treat to get out of the cold. And when it's too hot outside, this would be a good break. There are lockers here, bring a quarter or two! Lockers are 25 cents and worth it. That way to don't have to walk around carrying a coat. Kids have fun here, especially when they've been taught manners or they have siblings present to keep them reminded to make wise choices.
Parents are good to have around to supervise and assure safety of all the kids. (Parents, this is a learning children's museum where kids learn to cooperate... give them a chance to work out issues and the coach them).
Really enjoyed being here. Can't wait to come back.

We were there for a good solid 2-3 hours. We also really loved the fact that there was a place to get a cold drink or snack, plenty of restrooms, even a gift shop and park outside to enjoy. Couldn’t think of another thing that they could add to make it better to be honest. We all throughly enjoyed our afternoon spent here. The Old Capitol Museum, housed in a circa-1839 capitol building, offers free entry to visitors interested in learning about the role of government and historic preservation. The museum provides a detailed journey through time, introducing guests to the history of Mississippi and how wars have shaped thought and opinions. Along with exhibits on art and architecture, a visit to the museum can be complemented by touring the new Capitol building as well. The Mississippi Museum of Art is the largest art museum in the state, offering galleries, a cafe, an outdoor garden and a performance stage. The museum boasts an impressive permanent collection of artwork that is free for the public to view. Additionally, there is a special invitational exhibit that requires a $15 admission fee but is well worth it. The staff are friendly and the museum itself is aesthetically pleasing. Visitors can also enjoy the beautiful Art Garden outside with its lovely sculptures, flowers and trees.
We went to see the " what became of Dr smith" exhibit. Quite Interesting look aT days gone by. Dr Smith was a creative optometrist who disappeared in the early 1900's. Was found 40 years later in an insane asylum. His journey is chronicled in the art if his great grandson. Other great exhibits to see as well.

I’ve always enjoyed the Art Museum, my favorite showcase is the scholar showcase. Recently I went for an event they hosted in partnership with others and I had an amazing time there was kids run and playing out side there was kids in the inside along with adults doing the guided tours. I even over hear a little girl answer a question the tour guid asked and she got it right. The fun filled activities out side for both adults and kids. The Art museum even brought out Jackson Hinds for health screenings. There was several food trucks and in total for my entire time spent there I spent roughly 33 dollars. Not to mention they hosted a movie from the Cspire stage while everyone hung in the Bankplus green. I look forward to future event the Art Museum have.

Jackson has over 20 museums. This one is near the Jackson Convention Complex and the Russell C. Davis Planetarium. It is located behind Thalia Mara Hall in walking distance of the Westin hotel. I attended the 2023 Mississippi Invitational, which highlighted 15 young Mississippi Artists. The building is showing its age a bit, but is still very nice. The staff is friendly, courteous and efficient. The Art Garden is not to be missed.

We visited this time on a high school field trip. Our group's guide was very knowledgeable and patient. She fielded the students' funny comments and sincere questions very well. The classroom activity really inspired some thought and allowed the kods to connect with the pirces we viewed. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and hope to come again soon when we have more time to appreciate all that the museum as to offer.

The Mississippi Museum of Art (MMA) in downtown Jackson is an artistic oasis! It's Mississippi's largest art museum, overflowing with stunning permanent collections and captivating special exhibits. Admission to the permanent collection is free, letting you lose yourself in a world of art across all eras and styles. Special exhibits, while ticketed, bring in fresh collections that'll leave you wanting more.
But the MMA offers more than just art. Take a break in their gorgeous Art Garden, a green haven perfect for unwinding or enjoying a picnic lunch. With a calendar packed with events and programs, the MMA is a lively center for Jackson's art scene.

Went on first Saturday which was advertised as free...nope. so I spent the 13 bux .
Had some nice displays but the lighting was so low, I couldn't see the paintings.
The patrons were friendly and happy.
I was spoiled since I went to Picasso display in Atlanta which was a complete display.
Was nice to see young folks doing their own painting.

A lovely mix of international and local artists. My favorite local was Gwendolyn A. Magee, whose quilting rises to the level of museum masterpieces. I paid $18, and I think part of that was for access to the traveling Picasso landscapes exhibit. Wow! There was even a hands-on component to the cubist exhibit: sketch pads and pencils with tips for how to draw in the vein of Picasso. To see so many of his works close-up was a real treat. Guide/docent Kenya was engaging and generous with her time. Thank you for sharing your personal touch!

This is a wonderful museum and grounds. Visited at the beginning of September as part of our Jackson roadtrip stop. Entrance was free and there was plenty of great pieces and interesting installations. But by far, the best part, was the kids’ section! My daughter absolutely loved it, so much in fact, that every art museum we visited after she complained that it wasn’t an art museum because she wasn’t allowed to make any art. Which, hard arguing with that logic to a 5 year old 😅
The space is smaller but if you’re bringing kids it’s honestly better, because you don’t leave feeling like you missed a whole section or a whole floor, etc. Overall, highly recommended!

I toured this museum during the Mississippi portion of a road trip, and I was really impressed! They have an excellent permanent collection of amazing works which are free to the public, and the invitational exhibit which is $15, but definitely worth it! I am always happy to give my money to parks and museums! The staff here are also very friendly and the museum is very beautiful. There is also a gorgeous Art Garden outside of the museum where you can sit and enjoy beautiful flowers and trees and sculptures.

I feel like this is an underappreciated gem in downtown Jackson. It's never been busy any time we have gone, even when free. It's a nice, peaceful place to spend an hour or so. Lovely garden on the grounds, nice, somewhat small permanent and visiting exhibits. Free on Sundays until Sept 2022 and some other days here and there - check website. Also worthwhile for special events like live outdoor music or the children's art festival. Free parking as well.

One of the best museum that we have ever visit.
Pros: The place is pretty nice both from the outside and the inside. They are free so it is so amazing and everyone can come and visit that is so awesome. Let me pay the excise be a “special and there’s many activities that you can do while you are there.
Cons: There’s not a lot of parking space and it is downtown so that may be quite something going on. Because it is free so there’s not many special pictures of arms that you can see.
The Mississippi Agriculture and Forestry Museum is a historical attraction featuring both a living-history farm and a reconstructed town from the 1920s cotton-economy era. Visitors can view local artifacts, tools, and information on agricultural technology advancements inside the main building. The museum also offers a fun scavenger hunt using QR codes in its model train displays for children to enjoy.
Still in the works right now, but it's a good museum for anyone interested in the history, development, and industry of Mississippi!
They have a whole host of old planes and vehicles. Also a bunch of model trains!
The outdoor exhibit is cool because it was a bunch of buildings that were rescued from demolition and moved to the site for preservation.
It's cheap too!

Our Women's Ministry group rented a bldg for our seminar and luncheon. The place was very nice and clean. We had adequate space for vendors and attendee tables.
Everything went smoothly.
My only issue was the parking. It seems a walk - a -thon was going on, and even though we paid for a facility use, we had to fend for parking. Carrying set up items from across the bridge , back and forth, was a bit far for some of us senior women. I wish they would have allotted spaces close to bldg we rented for our use only.
Other than that ....it was okay.
We enjoyed our time, cleaned up after we finished, and packed up and made our trek back across the bridge.

Spent 2 hours here during our family road trip. LOTS of information inside the main building; couldn't read it all in one stop! Large collection of tools & info on advancements in Agricultural technology. They had posted a QR code to access a scavenger hunt in the model train displays that our 11-year-old enjoyed tremendously. Live farm animals in the children's barn. The mock town was cool. You can walk through the cotton gin barn and a large cabin, but most buildings are viewed through a door or window. The General Store is their gift shop, and most prices were reasonable. Definitely worth the stop.

When I come to Jackson this is one of my favorite outdoor places to visit. Great museum of Ms agriculture, many old period buildings man by of which have been moved and restored from older farms. There are animals for the kids to see, a huge model train exhibit, an old cotton gin, general store and much more. In the fall there are periods re enacts, blacksmiths, weavers and spinners, cane syrup being made from sugar cane... this is a must see.

We had a blast traversing back into the past at the Ag museum. From the history lessons inside the heritage center, to the barnyard, general store and the trip through the gin, we thoroughly enjoyed every step. It's a great place to learn more about Mississippi's history and agriculture.
FYI. the carousel 🎠 is on a schedule, tickets can be purchased from the heritage center and is for children under 5!

If you want a genuine picture of how life was before and at the turn of the century, THIS place will supply it. It's setup as a small town, with various businesses that would have been there around 1880+... It also does a nice job showing how the gin mill AND subsequent harvesting machine changed the landscape forever. It shows how better roads led to increasing business, and how trains and autos doomed horsedrawn vehicles. Very nice to see an accurate portrayal of how things used to be. Well laid out. 👍👍👍

It was very nice to go back in time to the 1800s-1900s. There was a lot of interesting stuff to look at. We sure did learn a lot and it was so much fun. The staff there was very friendly. There is a general store where you can purchase items and such if you need snacks and drinks you can find it there. This place is really nice to visit.
The Eudora Welty House & Garden, located in Jackson, Mississippi, offers tours of the former residence of renowned 20th-century writer Eudora Welty and its historic gardens. The museum is reasonably priced at $10 per tour and visitors can explore the visitor center and beautiful garden for free. The guided tour is focused on the main house while visitors who prefer to explore museums alone can opt out of it. The museum is a must-visit for fans of Mrs.
We came here straight from the airport and arrived about 30 minutes before closing on a Saturday. Sadly we missed the tour of the house but we were able to take some beautiful pictures outside. The young woman in the visitors center was so lovely and told us about the audio tour as well as the flower scavenger hunt (for my kids). The gardens were beautiful and when we returned to say goodbye she even recommended a book for us and stamped it with the the Eudora house stamp! A lovely first stop on our Spring Break in Mississippi!

Had an awesome time. We enjoyed a audio recording of the gardens that we listened to on our phones as we toured the grounds. If you like flowering Camillas Ms Welty had numerous varieties around the grounds. Enjoyed the tour of her home immensely also it’s as if Ms Welty had just stepped out.

Came to the house for a temporary exhibit on a short story Welty wrote the night Medgar Evers was assassinated in his home across town. The exhibits in the visitor center are free, as are the gardens. There is a fee for a house tour. The gardens were quite lovely as well with signs talking about their creation as well as linking them to her short stories and letters.

I’ve lived maybe 20 miles from this National Historic Landmark and have never gone until now. The tours are every 2 hours so check schedule on website. They also have limited space for each tour.
There is a store with books and other items to purchase. Entrance is free on the 13th of every month which I didn’t know but happened to go on the 13th. Her awards are displayed in the house with bookstore. The tour guide Sam stated that after she passed they found them in a closet under a stack of books or papers. She never hung any of them. Well, she loved to write and didn’t do it to win prizes.
Before the tour you will watch a 20 minute video. Eudora Welty is speaking, sharing and sometimes reading from one of her books.
I absolutely love that they give tours of house. The tour guide gave detailed information. You are allowed to take photos but have to stay on the gray carpet.
The home is decorated circa 1980. All of Eudora Welty books seem to be laying as she may have left them before passing. There are 3,000 books in her home. 2,000 are at MDAH. She donated the house to MDAH long before passing.
Her parents purchased the home in 1925. They wanted to live across the street from Belhaven College.
There is so much history in the home and the garden is so beautiful and inviting. I also love the side pitch attached to home.
I highly recommended taking the time to visit this site if you are a history and/or garden lover.

Great museum tucked away in Jackson. I was in Jackson Mississippi for some work and always remembered doing a research paper on Eudora in high school. It took like 26 years to get here but I finally made it lol.
Purposely I didn't tour the main house as that was a guided tour and that I love to explore museums on my own. That package was a reasonably priced $10. Familiar with her work the visitor center and beautiful garden was more than enough and also free. If you are a fan of Mrs. Welty's work or an extensive gardener.... You'll love this tour. I gotta go back in the spring/summer months to get the full garden effects.

A must see if you are in town to visit. The garden is small, but extraordinary. The house is kept as it was in 1986. I love the books stacked everywhere. Ask about the art, the letters, the views. The docent allows the tourists to set the agenda.

Every American, especially non-Southerners, should experience this museum. I visited this exceptional museum about 3 years ago and I still hold it as one of the best museums I've ever visited.
The Museum of Mississippi History delivers everything I always hope a museum visit will, but rarely does. It explores with clear eyes, and a thoughtful heart, the complex, messy human history of the region – how it impacts our present, and how we can use lessons from our past to shape a better future with actions in our present. I laughed, cried, and definitely left with a deeper, changed view of Mississippi, the South, and our American history.
Clear an afternoon and go enjoy! Be ready to have interesting conversations with yourself and with the people you go with.

Since I volunteer at Two MS Museums, I have toured this museum many times but finally took the time to write review.
What I love most about it is that it is presented in chronological order and very spacious. There is a very nice area to sit on 2nd floor.
They also have several theaters that discuss certain historical events/periods. I love the short films because you get a lot of information over a short period of time.
I highly recommend visiting this museum if you love history. The MS Civil Rights Museum is located in the same building. If you want to see both plan on spending at least 4-6 hours. To really take in all that is offered, you may want to visit one museum in the morning and other in afternoon.

Museum of Mississippi History was by far our favorite of all the places we visited in Jackson. It is located in the same building as the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum so you can see both in the same stop. The building also has a nice casual restaurant that was very reasonable. If you plan to see both you can easily spend 5 or 6 hours hers.

Amazing museum! The detail and information is incredible. It is very interactive, and there are so many artifacts to look at. There are great films and sound effects. If you want to go through and really take in all the information, you could spend several hours here. I really enjoyed the common thread of “how we live” and showing different home setups and with detailed dioramas. It was $15 for both this and the Civil rights museum, and I found it well worth the price. Also have a great gift shop with lots of local pottery. You can get national park passport stamps at the front desk.

Passing through on the way to Arizona from North Carolina and having had their bourbon before I had to stop att their distillery. I know your weren't going on but they have a bottle/gift shop so popped in just before they closed at 4pm and Major took care of us. Giving us a little history of their bourbon and talking through all they offered. They had very limited stock of a 13 year bourbon and their pick plus others. I ended up with their cask strength pick and man o man it is good. Would love to come back for a tour one day but keep an eye on them... They about to blow up.

I had read some reviews and wanted to come by and check it out since they allowed pups. Upon arrival we really were taken back by the space as the decor was awesome! We grabbed a beer and found out due to MS laws that they couldn't sell mixed drinks on property but they did have tours where we can taste. So after a short wait until the next tour we had a great walk through with Zack and ended with some tastings. My wife and I enjoyed the vodka and bourbon (we aren't gin fans). After the tour I stopped by the gift shop for a hat and a bottle of bourbon for home since not distributed in Ohio as of yet. If I'm ever back in the area I will def be stopping back by!

LeFleur's Bluff State Park Mayes Lake is a vast 305-acre park consisting of lakes, fields, and forests. It offers various recreational activities such as camping, fishing, hiking and golfing in its 9-hole course. Along with wildlife watching opportunities, the park also features playgrounds and pavilions for families to enjoy picnics and outdoor fun.
Very nice but did not see any gators, Wally was nowhere to be found!
Nice site (#3) with view on lake/river. Stayed 3 nights and price quite affordable (under $40/night) for electricity and water (dump station close to entrance) Site is quite big with lot of trees. Washrooms/Shower block a bit ancient but clean and plenty of hot water and need code to access it. There is also a washing machine and a dryer which is a big plus. Accept quarters or can use app but a bit more expensive with app.
The cool thing is that we got to the nature science museum by using the nature trail from the campsite. About a mile max from campsite to the back of the museum. From there quite easy to get to the amazing kids playground between the nature science and kids museums.
Ranger at the gate wad quite friendly and gave us tons of info and goodies for the kids (posters and stickers).
Fun place to bike and have a campfire but cannot use bikes on the trail and it would have been a challenge to ride them on trails as there are stairs and trail has been washed out in some places with debris. Can use wood found on the ground but mostly wet so better to bring your own.

Very quiet, beautiful campground with huge wooded sites with water and electricity, but the bathhouses are aging. They have several docks and gazebos in there park for water access but we were disappointed at the amount of litter along the shore. Staff were very helpful and friendly. When we entered the state park for camping, the camp site your assigned isn't clear in anyway. We just took an open spot as there wasn't a station with information on a board. Be aware that the road to the campsites has potholes and unpaved, and narrow in areas.
The RV pad is level, paved and clean with beautiful views of the lake. The restrooms at the campsite could definitely use an update.

I'm not a local but it seemed like a nice little haven for the city dwellers in the general area. Fishing, hiking, wildlife, pavilions, camping, and playgrounds. We walked the path around the lake, it was a nice but now great. But it was spring with little foliage yet, I believe it will be much more enjoyable with some greenery in the summer. Don't let me talk you out of going. Any nature is good, go for a walk.

One of the better state park campgrounds in Mississippi that we have visited. The sites were clean and spacious. The ladies bathroom was a complete disaster though. It appears as it if hadn’t been cleaned in days and all the toilets were “full”. Gross! The dump station also smelled horrendous, so we just kept driving as we didn’t have much to dump. This would normally be a 3 star for me, but giving 4 stars compared to other MS State Parks north of this location.

Some of the staff were a little upset because they were trying to close before 8 when the program was over and wanted to put up everything, but other staff allowed us to tour at our own pace as well as enjoy the refreshments that were being served. I think new people need to be over the serving next year. However, it was overall very nice! I will go back in the future.
The Jackson Zoo is a park-like zoo that houses more than 120 different animal species, each living in carefully crafted natural habitats. Despite facing limitations in funding, the zoo manages to offer a great experience for visitors of all ages. The staff are friendly and passionate about their work, which helps create an enjoyable public relations experience. The animals on display are active and can be viewed up close from excellent vantage points, making them highly interactive with visitors.
First time there! It was a little different from the bigger zoos. There was plenty of space and time to explore. The animals there were fat and happy! They have a large variety of animals, and appeared to be acquiring more as many of the exhibits we're without inhabitants. It was early in the season and very happy to have the experience with my son, who LOVED it! The carousel was fun as carousels are! I bet it will be spectacular during the height of the summer season! I've been told the train should return then.
Be prepared to prepurchase tickets or have cash on hand to enter, as they didn't take cards at the door. The carousel rides are $2 each, so prepurchase at admissions or have cash on hand!
Also, remember to carry in something to eat and drink, as they don't have food nor drink available to purchase except for unreliable Pepsi machines and one snack machine inside the admissions building.
For the fun experience, friendliness of the park staff and especially the price of admission, it was worth trying on our spring break to Jackson getaway!

This zoo was lovely and was definitely much more beautiful than I anticipated. Loved the range of animals in there. Felt a little sorry for the lonely ones like the Giraffe, Tiger, Black Bear, Rhinoceros but that's just my animal loving sensitive side lol. I love how they made the habitats feel real for the animals in there. The only down side was, there was no real restaurants just a few food trucks. It would also be really nice to have a place for souvenirs as well. All in all, I am giving this place a 5 star because it surpassed my expectations. :)

This zoo needs some major help!!
Let me start by saying the staff were wonderful. Everyone talked to my 3yo and I as we passed by. But we were there from noon to 4 and only saw five employees total the entire time. One at the entrance for tickets, one at the carousel, one driving by on a golf cart and two zoo keepers walking by that stopped and talked to us.
The animals seemed well taken care of and happy but the zoo was practically crumbling down around them. Several closed off areas due to structural issues, broken and missing signs all over, and countless cracks/falling hazards in the pathways.
Everything was cash only which could be seen as a major inconvenience in today’s world, but I did my research and brought cash.
The fruit popsicle we bought had been previously completely melted and refrozen. My toddler didn’t seem to mind but it made for a huge mess and just a little distasteful.
We loved the Rhino, monkeys, hippo, and zebra.

My family and I are visiting Jackson Mississippi on vacation. We were excited to visit the Zoo and to our surprise we were disappointed. The grass is over grown, majority of the exhibits were closed and the animals that are there appears to be kept to the bare minimum. We were informed by an employee and another park guest the zoo may be moving and little monies is going into the up keep of the attraction. If the zoo isn’t going to be maintained for the better good of the animals, employees and park guests please close for business and move the remaining animals to another facility that will care for them as they should be.

The perfect place for an afternoon. Although there are obvious issues, you can’t deny that the staff at the Jackson Zoo are trying their hardest with what they have. Having more attendance and sponsors would help with the structural issues they face, as there is no denying that they are underfunded. Everyone was friendly as well! There are also animal wish lists on Amazon that one can easily access to help!!

Love this zoo. My kids have a ball every time. Animals look happy, you can get very close and they are very interactive.

Everything is run down. Grass is over grown. Animals are depressed. Staff does not care and the place is barely running. This place needs to be shut down and I recommend everybody to tell them to do the same. The animals are in extremely poor conditions. It’s a joke the city runs it the way they do.

Desperately in need of MAJOR funding, TLC, and animals. A lot of empty exhibits and attractions. The carousel was closed but the music was playing. The deli near the African Savanah was closed. A lot of doors open that said "staff only." And no train for the track at Livingston Park. When I drove in the gate, I had a feeling that I might not drive out. It feels empty before you see anything.
The animals they have: tiger, bear, monkeys, birds, rhino, zebra, turtles, ostriches, fish do look healthy and taken care of.

Needs some repairs, and updated really bad. Even if the walkways were taken better care of I believe you would have more guests come see your little zoo.

The setting of the zoo is lovely. It is a very old zoo, 115 yrs I think. That said, it has fallen on hard times, especially through the pandemic. They only have 3 full time staff I think.
The animals are all healthy and the grounds are clean. animals we have not seen elswhere:
Kookaburras
Rhino
Ruffed tailed (brown/red coated) lemurs
7 alligators (we have seen token small ones at other zoos, but these guys were huge!)
Baby Black bear. Lost its mother and they are trying to find a buddy for him.
The carousel was fun! Lots of interesting animals to ride there.

This place should be shut down! Cages falling in, potholes, only saw 1 tiger, 1 bear, 1 rhino, a couple chimps, monkeys and GOLDFISH! Grass is taller than some exhibits, trees down all over the place(from a storm 3 weeks ago) No food/drink options. Best thing was the snake house with a few snakes! Splash pad barely worked. Aquarium building had dirty murky water full of goldfish!
Sarah Piper — Google review
the pictures should speak for themselves. it was way worse in person. i feel extremely bad for the animals. literally, couldn’t see half of them because of the weeds. they barely have any animals. from the looks of it, they care more about the splash pad. the cafe wasn’t open and grown up, restrooms too. the vending machine they did have for drinks, you have to click one drink to get what you want ( click a peach fanta for a pepsi). absolutely just sad. i would add videos. but the bear exhibit was the saddest for me. the bridges were literally dry rotted and falling apart. the picture of it was loose, and the video i have you can literally shake it and it almost falls off. won’t be going back! they should be shut down for the sake of the animals.

Great experience for the price! This zoo does an incredible job with the limiting funding they receive. They have several new exhibits opening soon!
The keepers were friendly and incredibly passionate about public relations. Moreover, the animals that are on exhibit were active with excellent viewing areas.
There is even a SMALL attached water park play area for those hot Mississippi summer days!
I would highly recommend a visit, show the local zoo some love!
The Governor's Mansion, which has served as the residence for Mississippi's governor since 1842, is a historic landmark and popular tourist attraction. The mansion offers guided tours of its well-preserved building, providing visitors with an opportunity to learn about the rich history of the area. The building is also notable for hosting events such as basketball games and other local activities. It remains well-maintained and offers tours every half-hour from 9:30-11:30 AM.
Nice house. Incredibly interesting.

It's a free tour but you have to call to get an appointment. Lovely mansion with some brilliant color choices inside. I happened to be visiting during Christmas season, so the decorations were really terrific. It's the second-oldest governor's mansion in continual usage. Well worth a visit.

The governor didn't have time for a multi billion dollar industry because he was too busy trying to steal from the federal government and the poor people of Mississippi.
Mynelle Gardens Arboretum & Botanical Center is a serene place with abundant greenery, shaded trails, and multiple seating areas. The garden boasts of various floral species that are not commonly found in the area, making it an attractive destination for tourists. One can stroll around the garden to discover its beauty as there are many hidden gems along the way. The entrance fee of $5 is reasonable and worth every penny spent to enjoy this peaceful oasis.
Come one, come all. Take a stroll on the paths in the garden. I can't wait to return during other seasons.
Cash only.

5.00 per person is too much for this small garden. The garden is not very well cared for and needs a lot of work. Same for the house, it was basically used as storage, such a shame too because it's such a beautiful house.

The Farish Street Neighborhood Historic District, situated in Jackson, Mississippi, was once a renowned locality for Black-owned enterprises until the 1970s. It holds significant historical value owing to its rich cultural heritage and architecture.
Awesome campus my son really enjoyed JSU high school band camp 2022.
Tomeka Mitchell — Google review
The campus is a mixed bag of nice a nice lay out, new building, old building, broken streets around the perimeter. The main building where parent would normally end up looks great but the oh if u check out the dorns if looks like they are still in the 80s. Wasn't expecting this type of vibe at all. I at least hope the have good events outside of football.

My daughter was accepted to this university. I refuse to let her go. As long as MS protects Carolyn Bryant, that state will not get my money

I feel like this school benefits people that already live within that area. I am from Milwaukee, WI and this process was very difficult for me. Jackson state university fits that overall description of how unprofessional, historically black colleges/universities can be. I am not going to go too much into detail, but if you are a college student like me who comes from out of state and do not come from a lot of money, this will not be a easy process. It was my dream to go to a hbcu and hopefully I will eventually reach that but jsu did not give me the confidence in myself nor in them, in order to reach my dream. I care very much about my education and I want to make the best decisions as possible, so I will not dim my chances towards my success by going to a school like JSU. This school gives show & tell rather than putting more light on a student’s education & outcome.

It wasn't my preference but my daughter was locked in from the beginning. I now know she's made an excellent choice!

Kid on her 3rd yr. Ever since day 1 no one is available to answer calls or returns them. Then, when you call after the 100th time a month later, there’s a form to fill out that delays student loans/financial aid and you’re forced into a ridiculous payment plan…and for what when loans have been approved but the school apparently is too understaffed to accept them?! Showers barely work, can’t drink the water half the time, AC just repaired & murders on campus. Hopefully the kid realizes attending an HBCU is overrated & over priced and just go online for a bachelors for a quarter of cost & answered calls to help fund education.

There is no professionalism with the staff at this expensive all about the dollar not the quality of education university. There is a fee for everything but the fees doesn't match the product. Run dont walk There is a better choice since you are paying for what you are receiving.

As an Alumni, it was great to see the campus after so many years. It has grown for the better and is simply beautiful. The bookstore is staffed beyond your needs and the staff was very nice. The new dorms and the layout of the expansion makes me proud to be a Tiger. Go J State.

The students are friendly. Professors are cool, but the rest of the staff (most, but not all) are unorganized. I’ve heard that some professors are prejudice & talk to their students in disrespectful manners, but fortunately, I haven’t come across a professor like that yet. If you’re seeking help, chances are the workers are too lazy to help out. You have to know important staff members for anyone to actually do their job. The school is also in a dangerous area.
The Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame & Museum is a museum that showcases the achievements and history of Mississippi's athletes and teams through interactive exhibits. Visitors are welcomed by friendly staff members who direct them to watch a brief video about Mississippi sports before exploring the extensive collection of memorabilia on display. The museum is impressively clean, well-organized, and provides a comprehensive overview of various athletes' accomplishments throughout the state's sporting history.
Museum is beautifully setup….great exhibits….only $5 fee to get in…worth the time..

This was my first stop when I got to Jackson, I'm a huge sports fans and like to enjoy sports museums for states who have them, so this one was a no brainer. When you first open the door you are greeted by an older women and gentlemen, both very nice folks. They have you watch about a 10 minute video on Mississippi sports, very nice short film. At first glance, I was amazed how clean and nice the museum was. As I proceeded to all of the memorabilia, I was impressed on the set up and how much stuff they had on display for all of the different athletes. I highly recommend making this one of your stops when visiting Jackson. You won't be disappointed if you're a sports fan.

This place was kind of small. Not a lot to look at. Should j just be free to get in. Gift shop is so lame even the employees were apologizing for how terrible it was. It’s so bad the employees told us not to buy the Pom poms because the first shake you give them it falls apart. Not something I would waste my time going to again.

Great place to visit even if you are not a sports fan. It's very nicely organized with a video to orient you to its purpose and interactive exhibits. We didn't get to see all of it due to carpet maintenance, but we'll be sure to go back and finish. The staff were very personable and accommodating. It covers all sports and players, past and present who have hailed from the state or played for the state. Some present names haven't been inducted due to lack of tenure, but the staff will explain the parameters.

The facility was very nice and originally would've recieved 5 stars from me. However when I asked about why there wasn't any steve McNair memorabilia. The lady said they a lot it's just not on display because he was murdered, which is why it should be out on display.🙄 also there was very little in Marcus Dupree & only 1 tiny article on steve McNair both of which were basically tucked away hidden in a closed off section. I feel like peoples personal biases and opinions should not overshadow what these missiapians talents and legacies. I was considering purchasing a lifetime membership but after that talk I was turned off & probably won't return. Which is unfortunate because the facility it very nice

The MS Sports Hall of Fame is a nice commemoration of the contributions MS athletes have made to sports. The exhibits were well designed and interesting. The high school athlete section seemed to be just thrown together but overall a nice place to visit.
