Amazement Square is an educational museum filled with interactive exhibits perfect for children. The exhibits are anchored by a climbing tower that features slides and zip lines. Children can explore various displays and learn about how things work while having fun running from floor to floor. Notable exhibits include the James River model and the Jamestown display, but all of them are designed to engage children's curiosity and enhance their learning experience.
This is a great place for kids, and so much fun. The adults have almost just as much fun.

We have a membership and haven't regretted it! Two things to watch for: they have limited hours and days during certain seasons and the paint booth in the basement also has limited hours (I believe only open after lunch). Check ahead so you don't promise your children you'll go... and then they are closed! Speaking from experience.
It's a great place for a school or homeschool field trip.
**Sorry for weird angles or not full views of things but I try to not get faces in the videos/pictures for privacy sake.

Delightful.
During the school season, it’s a pleasure to have somewhere to take my 3 year old son that’s not crowded. We can spend an hour daily going back to his favorite exhibits and exploring new ones. As an adult, I’ve learned so much already and would love to spend a day here alone.
Their “Everyone is Special” initiative focuses on autism with trained individuals in the field—a great opportunity to reach out to others in the Autism community.
Spend some time browsing their website. There are a lot of valuable resources here. The staff is wonderful.

An amazing interactive children’s museum. My 2 year old son and I came here one day in the winter as we were trying to find something to do as it was so cold. He had so much fun running from floor to floor exploring every new interactive display and learning how things work. He really loved the light up stairs! The other fun display was the James River model and the Jamestown display. I am actually planning to bring him back for his 3rd birthday next week and see how much more he can play. They have done an incredible job with the entire facility. It was very clean and the staff was helpful and polite. We can’t wait to come back!

This place is awesome! My 4 year old had a blast. Several floors of different games and animals to explore. Such a cool place and the admission is as only $36 for 3 people. Highly recommend for kids under 12. We got there when it opened and there was no wait. The admission allows you an all day pass so you can leave and come back later too.

Came here on a field trip with my 5 year old sons preschool class. There is a lot to do for kids their age. They all had a very good time. The only reason I’m deducting stars is because I along with several other moms LOST their child in the tunnels and tubes. It says ages 5 and up but should honestly be much older. It’s insanely easy to lose your little one no matter how much you watch them. If you go, keep them glued to your side at all times and do NOT let the smaller kids in the tunnels unless you want to go into a full blown panic attack like I did searching for them.

We decided to check this place out with our kids and they loved it! Lots of different fun exhibits for all ages. Be ready to climb, because there are tunnels and slides that go from the top to the bottom of the building! There are several huge picnic tables outside that are in a shady spot, which was a great area to eat our picnic lunch! They have a room in the farm area for mothers to feed and change their baby, which I think is great!

We've done a lot of children's museums and science centers, but I think this one really is exceptional. Friendly staff. Super clean! And almost all the exhibits were in perfect working order. A wide variety of engaging exhibits. My kids are 2 and 5 and there was a lot that kept their attention for a long time! There was a large group of 5th graders there at the same time, and they also seemed very engaged. The climbing tower that goes to all 4 floors was great too.
Nestled in the heart of Lynchburg, the Old City Cemetery is a unique blend of history, nature, and spirituality. Covering 27 acres, this historic site features tombstones, stunning public gardens, and even serves as a picturesque wedding venue. Despite its burial ground status, it's considered one of Lynchburg's top attractions due to its rich historical significance. The cemetery pays tribute to various groups including African Americans and Union and Confederate soldiers.
We had a wonderful day at Old City Cemetery. Our guild was wonderful and very informative about the Victorian Era. Thank you!! PS. I LOVE THE HAIR

We were married at the chapel of the Old City Cemetery in 2019. From the Chapel, to the grounds, to the use of the Comfort House it was absolutely perfect for our special day. Guests were welcome to arrive early for their own photo ops or just to take in some of the history and enjoy the peaceful gardens. The Comfort House was perfect for the Bridal party. The Chapel gave the illusion of a more personal and quaint atmosphere, almost the feeling of stepping back in time to a more simple way of life and celebration that we weren't able to find at the larger wedding venues. The tree and swing across from the Chapel quickly became one of our favorite wedding photo props. If we had to do it all over again we wouldn't change a thing and love that we live local and can go back at anytime to reminisce.

What a wonderful place! An old school cemetery that preserves the garden tradition that modern day centuries have lost. Gorgeous trees, fragrant flowers and blossoms of all kinds. Plenty of paths with statues. Numerous buildings dedicated to preserving history - even a small museum and gift shop. There are events here throughout the year, from flower garden teas and autumn events to some fun evening haunted history tours. I attended a Gothic tea party. How fun is that??

This is a soothing place to visit, right in the middle of Lynchburg. The cemetery honors many African Americans as well as Union and Confederate soldiers. The grounds are well-maintained, and there are pretty garden areas. There are several buildings whete you can look in the window and see how people lived and worked back in the 1800s.There is a doctor's office, a surgery room, a "pest "house (where victims of pestilence we're kept). Free and open to the public.

Incredible city treasure! Any time someone asks for what to see , this is our first suggestion. Simple paths to drive (or walk around). The swing is a great picture spot, along with many other spots. Fall is beautiful with the leaves changing. Christmas brings a crisp walk and many graves have wreaths.
Our family loves this area and we visit often

Last night’s Candlelight Tour at Old City Cemetery Museums and Arboretum was one of the best living history events that I've ever witnessed. The scene actors and spirit guides were phenomenal. The amount of work that went into this event showed in all the details-- a great script, skilled actors & performers as well as parking attendants, those who placed hundreds of candlelight bags along the paths, to the ticket takers.
I was thrilled to see a women writer represented but even more excited that the interpretation of history included so much emphasis on the not-often-shared history including three examples of Black women who were interpreted through the lens of Black joy- these women's stories were respected and celebrated.

This is a word of caution for anyone planning to rent the Bicentennial Chapel to host their wedding.
My wife and I made reservations eight months in advance to reserve this venue from 2pm-7pm, which included the chapel, comfort house, and any area of the grounds for our ceremony. It was communicated in advance that the area behind the comfort house, including underneath the chapel would be needed for the reception.
At 10AM the DAY OF our wedding we received a call that we would need to have our stuff cleared from underneath the chapel by 3:30pm so that a group of people could setup for an event scheduled the next day. It was explained to us that there was a scheduling conflict. After disputing the issue we were told that it had not been noted that we had reserved the spot underneath the chapel. Eventually we were passed off to the director, eventually coming to the resolution that this group which turned out to be cemetery founders would arrive at 7pm to setup instead.
While our wedding went splendidly after settling this “scheduling conflict” communication issues did not stop there. We were told that the day before the wedding someone would be available to unlock the doors so that we could rehearse and setup. Unfortunately no one was available despite arranging a rehearsal time in advance, so we were forced to setup the day of. We were also told there would be a refrigerator available underneath the comfort house. We learned the day of that this was not true. The final slap to the face was when the group showed up at 6:40pm, twenty minutes before our rented time slot was over and began setting up over top of our cleaning crew and guest.
Overall we were shocked by the poor communication and professionalism that came with renting this $700 venue. We were also disappointed that a handful of cemetery founders and staff found it acceptable to plan over our event so that they could prepare for their event the following day. An opportunity that was not provided to us, despite arrangements being made.
In conclusion, this is a beautiful spot to host a wedding but due to the lack of professionalism we experienced I am disappointed to say we cannot recommend this location

We love visiting OCC! Everytime we go to walk the grounds and see their wonderful flowers, we think "we should come back sooner next time." I wish that we were closer.
The old gravestones are fascinating, and the trees and other plantings are wonderful.
I am not much of a gardener, but one of my best flower purchases ever came from them - daylilies and Siberian iris. Both have done really well in my neglected garden areas.

We were a group of 4 adults and we each enjoyed the October 15th, 2023 event at the Old City Cemetery and had the pleasure of "meeting 11 spirit" actors that told historical and humorous stories of many of the "residents" of the cemetery. We were grateful that we booked and attended the sit down event verses the walking tour. We were able to meet more actors and hear their stories and each actor did a fabulous job of portraying a member of our history. Highly recommend!
Point of Honor is a Federal-style house constructed in 1815 by Dr Cabell, who served as Patrick Henry's physician. The property offers daily tours and an exhibit that depicts the families who once resided there. The tour provides detailed information about the home's restoration process and highlights its large rooms with intricately carved mantelpieces and numerous windows. Visitors can enjoy stunning views of the James River from the second floor, while the dining room and reception area are especially noteworthy.
It was a very enjoyable experience. I was there for a festival of sorts. Beautiful grounds and gorgeous buildings. Would definitely recommend getting the tour.

An old plantation home in one of a few historic districts of Lynchburg, VA.. Includes a gift shop and history section at the parking area. It can be walked but is probably best to at least drive then park as there is construction on the bridge to get there. Other than that it's a beautiful neighborhood to explore.

Chris Regentin — Google review
I took the first tour that was available since 2020, so they were just getting back into things. The tour took about half an hour and was informative. However, it seems like it had been updated with a political agenda. There was an out of place blurb about native peoples at the beginning and digs at slavery and peoples throughout. Please leave the political views alone and just tell me how things were. I did like that the tour person carried photos as a visual aid. One funny thing was she said some people died of consumption, saying it seems they had eaten too much. Ha, ha. Consumption was tuberculosis. I think her knowledge was shallow, but as I said, that was the first tour since the pandemic started in 2020.
A few days later, the tour’s participants were contacted and warned that the museum’s shopkeeper, who went on the tour with everyone, tested positive for COVID-19 the day after the tour. Ouch.
In all, the informational content and length are what you would want and expect in a tour, political views aside. I was disappointed this particular tour did not include going through the house.
SeaQuest Lynchburg, located inside the River Ridge Mall, offers a unique and interactive experience for visitors of all ages. The 20,000 square foot facility is home to a diverse range of animals from five continents that you can feed, touch, and interact with. From sloths to porcupines and otters, there are various animal encounters available. It's a family-friendly adventure where you can pet animals like piranhas and wallabies while also feeding them.
The best experience for little ones (and adults too)! We have been a couple times now and are so thrilled with the interactive experiences every time! My daughter lights up when we get to SeaQuest! We’ve fed baby kangaroos, pet animals and have fed the birds! Take your kids - you won’t be disappointed! There are lots of great spots to take breaks and places for photo-ops (the shark mouth is our favorite) and be sure to buy the tokens to purchase fish food along the way!!!

Ok so my opinion on sea quest is that it's a very nice place especially for kids. But I dislike is the fact that the animal have no real space to move around and exercise 😒 and they seem to be under the heat lamp no outside sun. They seem bored really sad looking 😞 so that breaks my heart ❤️ seeing the wallaby and other animals just laying there, I hope they can change to just a aquarium it would be better. Thanks.

The annual pass is a great deal if you live nearby and visit regularly like we do. If you only plan to visit once, it might not be worthwhile. I absolutely love the capybaras; they are so chill. We also enjoy it when the animals are taken out for walks and we can pet them. However, I don't recommend the special interactions with otters, where all you do is throw food at them. I got to experience this interaction for free on my birthday, but I believe it's definitely not worth paying the fee if you don't have an annual pass.
We try to only go during a weekday because the line is usually long at weekends.

A children's zoo in a mall is probably the most unlikely place you'd expect to find one. But SeaQuest certainly pulls it off in a very professional, family-friendly, and interesting way, and with little smell. It was amazing to walk through and view, even touch, fish in the aquarium, small animals, tropical birds & snakes, desert lizards and iguanas. Beyond the normal admissions and self touring, we paid for the experience package which allows a personal guide and access to feeding some of the animals. The porcupines, otters, and Flash the sloth were a few of my favorites. The mall is gorgeous with an excellent playground and food court that adds to the enjoyment for kids and parents.

This place has really gone downhill. The employees, that we seen, were fairly nice. We paid $24.99 for 15 tokens and there weren't enough exhibits open to use them or enough machines to get the food from that worked. Most all of the machines were jammed. I understand some of them are nocturnal but goodness.. that is expensive! I am giving 2 stars because the kids enjoy the bird room, and I do too!

I recently had the chance to visit SeaQuest in Lynchburg, VA, and what an experience it was! From the moment you walk in, you’re transported to a different world, filled with the sights and sounds of exotic creatures from across the globe.
The aquarium is exceptionally clean and well-maintained. Their staff members were knowledgeable, friendly, and clearly passionate about the animals in their care. One of the highlights for me was the interactive touch pools where I could gently touch starfish and rays. It’s not just about looking; you can really engage with these incredible animals.
For families, this place is a gem. My kids couldn’t get enough of feeding the birds and the lorikeets. There’s even an opportunity to snorkel with stingrays, which was an unforgettable experience.
One thing that really impressed me was SeaQuest’s commitment to education and conservation. Through informative displays and interactive exhibits, visitors gain a deeper understanding of various ecosystems, which I found both enlightening and empowering.
The only downside was that it was a bit crowded, but that’s to be expected given its popularity. The ticket prices are reasonable, especially considering the quality and breadth of the experience.
Overall, SeaQuest is a fantastic way to spend an afternoon, offering both entertainment and educational value. I highly recommend it for families, animal lovers, and anyone looking to have a unique, hands-on experience with nature.
I hope this review gives you an idea of what a visit to SeaQuest might be like!

Hands down, one of the best zoo/aquarium experiences I've ever had. Cam and Sierra were amazing and I highly recommend asking for them when you visit. We got the Epic Quest package and it was well worth the money. We had such an amazing time feeding and petting all the animals as well as learning all about them from Cam. Im gonna admit I was wary of what to expect of animal treatment after seeing what happened in other states that have seaquest, I was avidly looking at animal habitats, behavior, and looking if i see anything wrong with them or their habitat too.
With that being said, THIS Seaquest? Super good.
Tank water is clean, even if you go diving you shower before getting in, and animals boundries are respected in the tank, you are told ahead of time, where sharks etc go when they dont want to be around people and theres a zero tolerence for invading that. Animals, super friendly and workers respect when they dont feel up to interactions and allow the animal there space. I even had a worker give time to a bird before we interacted with the porcupine because she knew the bird would get jealous.
They truly truly love these animals deeply and it shows.
They stay ontop of saftey for people and animals and make sure theres no room for error, they do their absolute best to educate on animals to vistors.
Habitats are clean, spacious and everything they need is there, not like alot of places ive seen they actually give the animals room to move, and give them stimulating stuff, special lights etc. Animals are well fed and seem super happy which is important to me because i know so many animals usually get neglected in interactive spaces.
There are so many cute photo spots,
you have two lovley birds greet you right as you walk in.
I came here thinking i wouldnt be able to do all the interactions i wanted to do, and i got to do all except one, which was the otters and the ONLY reason i couldnt is because they are currently under vet care.
Which is important that they are closed off.
you can still see outside the cage but not allowed in and i commend that.
I came with low expectations and they surpassed them.
It being in a mall i wasnt expecting it to be as kept up as it was and i just want to commend the workers for what they do.
Their job isnt easy and they deserve so much praise.
Only one employee was kind of rude, but i totally get that she couldve been having a bad day and exhausted lol so i wouldnt hold too much weight on that.
Everyone else was super nice and supportive and informative and ready to help and work around things and give help as needed for several things.
Seaquest is beautiful and truly gives me hope for some interactive exhibits. Seeing the passion and love the workers have for the animals warmed my heart.
Totally worth the 2 hour trip there, thank you.

Lots of fun! There are a lot of exhibits you can go in, but if you want to feed the animals you need tokens, and for some (like going into the Savannah Cat exhibit and petting it) you not only need tokens but also a mask to help protect the animals. Definitely lots of fun for every age. It's self paced so you can go as fast or slow as you want, and there are places inside to sit, get snacks, and restrooms. As long as you're respectful of the animals and listen to the staff you're sure to have a fun time! A bonus is that this place is connected to the mall so you can exit to the food court for lunch and then go back in since your tickets are good for all day!

My daughter chose this place for her birthday and got to feed and pet stingrays. It was an amazing experience. It’s right inside of ridge river mall so that was a surprise, so afterwards, we were able to grab a bite and hang out after our adventure. Highly recommend. The people who work there truly care about animals and are very educational.

This was an awesome experience! Interactive and fun. Some of the animals get to roam around like a giant tortoise, pot belly pigs, etc. If you get tokens, you can feed the porcupines, capybara, toucans, otters and other various animals inside their habitat. It truly is a fun interactive experience.

The place was nice and had a lot of places where you can pay to feed the animals or interact with them. It is kinda small and took us about 1.5 hours to complete. Was a great place. Don't like how they surprised us with a $70 snorkel rental even when we called in advance and booked the swim with sharks and stingrays for my son. Well maintained and easy for biking or walking. As a dog trainer, I often use this trail area to work with clients. Located right in downtown Lynchburg, it's convenient to walk after a meal at one of the downtown restaurants.
Highly recommend visiting.

We had a ton of fun walking the Riverwalk trail and a few trails on the island. The place was a little bust but everyone was extremely polite. The views were beautiful and the kids loved learning the history of the island.

What an awesome place to bike ride, and take a walk! No excuse not to exercise, it is easy access and not a bad walk. Lots of shade for the sunny days.

This is a nice little out-and-back path on the river with a couple of bridges that offer relaxing views of the river. Was relatively busy for a Tuesday morning, so that tells me that locals really like it. This is more of a relaxing ride/walk/jog than for training, so be safe and go enjoy nature at its best.

Gorgeous paved trail with a couple of bridges that take you directly over the river. Perfect for biking, walking or jogging. Most of the path is underneath a canopy of trees providing plenty of shade on a hot day.

I hate that people have so rudely came and have ruined this beautiful nature trail with graffiti. It's not even good graffiti. A bunch of random juvenile looking scribbles. But it's still a relaxing nice trail worth visiting. Great for a run or bike ride. Wide trail with wildlife and a beautiful peaceful river. Can't forget the nice landmark the Love sign which is worth seeing and stopping for a picture with loved ones.

Beautiful walking trail. It’s flat and paved which is great for biking, skating, jogging, or just walking. It’s also a great place to take your dog for a walk. Really love it. Only reason I’m giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is when walking off the main trail onto one of the smaller ones that go into the woods to get close to the river you need to be careful. I’ve seen adults doing things that are not appropriate for kids to see.

I did 5.25mls each way walking. I’d vote for more seating past the 4.50ml Marker; otherwise I enjoyed the peace, serinity, and calm of the trail. Restrooms needed along that trail.
The Maier Museum of Art at Randolph College features a collection of American art from the late 1800s and early 1900s, with a focus on Impressionism and 20th-century Realism. The collection includes works by well-known artists as well as lesser-known women artists, put together by a female curator.
Small but well curated with a variety of art from local artists and beyond. Located on a darn fine piece of real estate, the Randolph College campus, and makes for a great addition for any visitor’s itinerary while visiting the college, Rivermont neighborhood, or Lynchburg in general.

Words previously used such as gem or jewel partly describe this incredible, amazing, spectacular collection! I was completely overwhelmed by the beauty and quality of the artistic contributors. My impression of the collection is a quiet strength throughout the works. I can't believe I have never known about the Maier, and strongly encourage everyone to take time to visit. Works of Henri, O'Keefe, Wood as well as many brilliant new artists draw you in and do not let go. I would plan on spending a few hours as there is so much to see. The only reason I did not rate the museum a 5 start is that I want it to be larger! *Note* annual loan exhibition will be displayed in the fall of 2023, plan to participate, it's worth your time when you experience the awe gallery after gallery!

Exceeded my expectations. We really enjoyed the tour with two of the volunteers.

One of Lynchburg’s lovely hidden gems. It will probably take half an hour to walk through, but the permanent art collection is fantastic and whatever they have in the temporary exhibit is always good. The service is always very good. Perfect date spot in a quiet corner behind Randolph College. Head over to Rivermont Pizza for a post-museum dinner, or take a walk on Randolph’s beautiful campus.
Robert Locklear — Google review
I have visited the Maier Museum during several different exhibitions. Its repertoire includes original exhibitions (sometimes curated from Randolph College's art collection and other times curated from contemporary American art by artists around the country). Other times, the museum hosts traveling exhibitions. I have found most of the exhibitions to be very educational, and they almost always include eye-opening art that I had never seen before.
Most staff members and volunteers know the stories behind many of the works of art on display, making the tours more well worth the time. The museum can be toured in well under an hour, although you could spend more time there asking questions about art on display.
I also have observed volunteers giving tours to school children, and they know well how to adjust their explanations to the level of their audience. Because of this, it may be a good destination for a classroom or family outing.
(Note: I used to work for Randolph College, which operates the Maier Museum, but I am employed elsewhere now.)

The Maier Museum of art is a must see for art lovers visiting or living in Lynchburg. The Maier overlooks the beautiful campus of Randolph College. The museum possesses and displays a world class collection of American Art, from artists you have actually heard of, such as Georgia O'Keeffe, Thomas Cole, George Bellows, Mary Cassatt, and many more! The museum is constantly changing the exhibitions to incorporate new acquisitions and travelling works. In addition to exhibition which are changed about three times per year, the museum also hosts artist talks and other learning events throughout the year. Children and groups are welcomed by the museum educator or the knowledgeable docents. Admission is free!

This is a jewell of a collection for late 1800s/early 1900s American art. A who's who of the canon with both quintessential and "make you think" examples of artists works. For those seeking the influence of women in the arts, the collection concept was put together by a woman and there are several wonderful pieces by well and lesser known women artists - an unusual Georgia O'Keeffe, a magical Judy Pfaff, a classic Cassatt, a striking Marion Boyd Allen portrait of Anna Vaughn Hyatt sculpting Joan of Arc on horseback. Definitely worth a detour if you are in the area. Suggested itinerary: Blue ridge Parkway, Jefferson's Poplar Forest and Meier Art Museum.

What an awesome gem tucked into Lynchburg, VA. Some very awesome paintings in here and some very knowledgeable people to tell you about them. I'm glad my daughter found this place.
We love bounce about!! The drop and shop has been our favorite! It makes our 4 year old feel like a “grown up” because he can stay by himself. All while dad and I get a couple hours just us or with his younger sister. We had his birthday at bounce back in September and we will never have a party at home again. Julia and her staff made it effortless on my part. I actually got to socialize and spend the party with my son. Can’t wait for our youngest to get to enjoy it!

Toddler area is for just that… Toddlers. Parents could care less, letting their big kids go in there trampling all over the little ones. It’s sad. Parents for once in your life, do better
Shelly Gardner — Google review
A kid was pushing my child and the worker was there before me and talkng with him. By the time I was there, the other parents had already been talked to (politely) and the situation was handled very well. The worker did almost non-stop laps basically and was really interactive with the kids. The guy at the counter was great with the computers and keep up on the other things. They seem to make a good team
Jessica Allen — Google review
The kids certainly had a good time. We took out grandkids, 1 1/2 & 5. They had a separate section for toddlers. Older kids are not or should not be allowed in unless they are playing with a younger sibling. There is no one watching any of the bouncys to make sure the rules are followed like there would be at an amusement park. So parents should make sure they are keeping a close eye on their kids. There were 5-7 year olds jumping near my 1 year old grandson in the bouncy for toddlers. I had to take him out for fear they would jump on him.
Judy Smith — Google review
We love it! We get the yearly membership and it pays for itself pretty quickly. We go during the week in the evenings and have just a few kids so they have someone to play with, but not so many that they are hazards. They have snacks, drinks a bathroom, and a water fountain and Wi-Fi. What more could you ask for? They have an area just for a little kids as well. We have been coming here since before the kids could walk. Perfect place to burn some energy especially when it’s too cold, too hot or rainy.
Kim Wright — Google review
There is a woman who works there her name is Kim and she is the sweetest woman I have ever met if I was in charge I would give her a bigger title she is so sweet I hope she has the best life!
Aryan Rawlings — Google review
It’s expensive for what it is. $14 on the weekend for ages 2 and above. All the same bounce houses just different looks but all basically the same. The rules are not enforced (socks required, no big kids in the toddler area, one bouncer at a time)
Parents are on their phones hanging out and not watching their children - big kids running in and out of inflatables and around facility, knocking younger kids down. The inflatables say “operator must be on duty at all times”, yet there is no staff around… only the person at the front desk.
It’s a good idea but needs improvement !

We always love coming to Bounce About with our kiddos to run off some energy! Since my son loves this place, we decided to celebrate his birthday here! From start to finish, the party planners were helpful and answered all of my questions! At the party, I didn’t have to lift a finger! The party planners did everything. It was nice to be able to watch and enjoy my son and his friends playing without having to coordinate and keep the party going! My family and friends enjoyed lots of bounce time and then an hour in the party room with pizza, cake, and presents! For the value, it was a fair price as well! I totally recommend!! So seemless and perfect!!! We’ll be back again to bounce soon and I wouldn’t be surprised if we held another birthday party here in the future!
Ashton Smith — Google review
The bounce houses are fun for the kids but the staff sucks at enforcing that kids aren't hurting other kids but will sure fuss about kids not walking and playing with the inflatable designs. In other words go at your own risk
Katelyn Whalen — Google review
Had my 3 children in there and they gave my autistic son a hard time. Hes only 2 and they said I had to pay $14 for him to bounce but I try to explain to them. He was it going to bounce. But they kept going and going and going so another lady approached me saying the same thing so then I got short and quick with her and tell her that. He was not bouncing and to please leave me? Alone. Several times but she kept going I just would like to leave this. View and I'm never going back.
Located in Lynchburg, the Academy Center of the Arts is a hub for performing arts. It hosts a diverse range of performances throughout the year, including classical music, dance, folk performances, and magic shows. The venue has welcomed acts like the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra, Ben Folds, and the Vienna Light Orchestra. Visitors have praised its welcoming atmosphere and comfortable seating. The center offers a variety of entertainment options for all ages and is considered an ideal spot for a memorable night out in Lynchburg.
Have seen many shows here and enjoy the atmosphere, service, and variety of performers/options. They have done such a good job of getting new entertainers- from musicians, poets, plays, and children’s events, we always have a great time. It's ok. The inside of the theatre is gorgeous. They were completely unprepared for the event though. Not enough staff to keep up with the concession lines. And the sound of the bands were great instrumental wise, but you couldn't understand the singer. Every bad had this issue. Not sure if it's cheap mics that the venue used, or the lack of any echo damping material or poor sound management. I really enjoyed the everclear concert but hopefully they fix the sound issue before wallflowers.

The facility was so pretty. The workers were delightful and there was a full drink and eat menu. (Although this wasn’t a popcorn kinda music)
There is parking across the street.
I will look forward to coming back.

We went to the academy centre of the arts to see Christmas in Killarney, what a fabulous show. The academy is easy to get to with parking opposite. The foyer serves snacks (chips, chocolate bars and nuts etc), has a fully licensed bar with good selections. Inside the architecture is magnificent, I was sitting in row J to the left and it seemed to be a great place to sit with great views of the stage. Would thoroughly recommend going here.

Quaint historical venue. There was ample parking available nearby on the night I attended the show. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly. They have an affordable concession stand that provides a variety of adult beverages, as well as soda, candy, and the best popcorn around. The bathrooms are so well maintained that they made me feel like I was in a posh hotel restroom. Different levels are easily accessible by wide staircases or by elevators. Most of the shows are reasonably priced, and because of the size of the theater, it offers one an intimate, up close, and personal experience! The only flaws that I feel bad about bringing up is that there are some seats that have blind spots during certain performances, and the side boxes , although costing more, don't give you a good perspective of the stage. You can actually see the rigging, performers, and workers between the curtins, which can be somewhat distracting. All in all, it's a terrific place to enjoy local and distant talent!

For my first experience here it was AMAZING the performance was spectacular “Step Afrika” if you ever get a chance to see them DO IT! They engaged the audience the entire time, they had you leaving feeling like you were a part of the experience! The theater is gorgeous my first time being there and very impressed for a smaller city theatre as I’m from NY I’ve seen many this was very welcoming it was the perfect temperature the seats are comfortable and I’m a larger girl so that’s very nice! Popcorn was perfectly buttery and perfectly salted nice and freshly popped. They serve alcohol! And they don’t water the drinks down typical pricing $8-$12/$15 very clean building everyone who worked there was super nice. Please go see a show you will enjoy yourself definitely a part of the Lynchburg experience!

Lynchburg's Academy Center of the Arts is a renovated theater that dates from 1905. The renovation was absolutely superb. I have been to several concerts in this theater and sat in a different location each time. It is an intimate experience, and I have yet to find a bad seat. The sound system is balanced and the theater itself provides excellent acoustics.

Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest, a former presidential retreat with remarkable architecture and landscapes, is now open to the public. Visitors can freely wander around the well-maintained grounds, which feature barns, slave quarters, gardens and a picturesque picnic area. House tours are available at a fee and offer valuable insights into the property's history and daily activities. The house's exterior resembles Monticello while the interior is currently undergoing renovations with minimal decor.
Jefferson was an interesting (and complicated) fellow. There is no doubt in my mind he would be a total tech junkie were he our contemporary.
I enjoy Poplar Forest more than Monticello.
There is more to understand about the construction of the house - the first octagonal house built in the Americas. Notice that from any angle you can only see three sides. I like it but don't find it "livable" the spaces are odd, beautiful, but too much from another era.
It's typically not crowded and you can roam a bit.
There is much history here and you can piece together parts of the complicated relationship he had with his enslaved persons of color.
I wish he had possessed the internal fortitude to free all his enslaved persons. Complicated, yeah?

Had a blast! Drove up from Chesapeake Va, to see poplar Forest, I’ve been to Monticello a bunch of times and always wanted to see poplar Forest. Been following on Facebook watching the restoration work. Go there today a little late for our tour, no worries they caught us up and had us on our way with the group. We had a great tour guide she answered all of our questions and explained a lot about the property buildings and Thomas Jefferson. If your looking for another Monticello it’s not even close. It’s a beautiful house that has never been finished as Jefferson never got the chance with his old age to complete the project fully. It shows how the house was built which is super cool and give the best view of how it was built and put together, something they can only explain at Monticello. I will be back again in the future and can’t wait to see it again!!

The houses outward appearance is similar to Monticello, the inside currently (spring 2022) doesn’t have much decor as it is under renovations. The grounds are well-kept and fun to explore. The grounds include barns, slave quarters, garden, and a picnic area. Under a group of trees there is a hidden seating area!

Everything is about "likes" anymore. Even the name of this place... "Thomas Jefferson's Popular Forest"? LOL. It was empty. Misnamed. Should be Thomas Jefferson's UNpopular forest! Shame tho. It was quite interesting. They even had an outhouse. "Thomas Jefferson sat here".
Andrew Cook — Google review
If you're a tourist, skip this one. The grounds and "trails" are kept nice and employees are nice. Unfortunately, there's not really any "Poplar Forest" left. The site now lies between a subdivision and golf course. Without full foliage on trees, you can see and hear the subdivision (lawn mowers, leaf blowers, etc.) and watch golfers with a busy roadway behind that. The "trails" are just hard-packed gravel that follows along a hard-packed road that goes from the house to a rear parking lot, or you can walk along beside the golf course. In either case, know you will be in full sun and in no way walking in trees of any kind. My guess is this is heavily used by locals to walk dogs or jog. There was nothing peaceful about it.
The house is $23/person (March 2024) to walk through or even walk around the outside of it. The decor is "set up to look like Thomas Jefferson's retreat house may have looked according to the employee in the gift shop. Despite it being a busy Saturday, no guided tours were available so you'll do a self-guided tour.
I'm certain I'll never go back and do not recommend it. There's just no reason to go unless you live in one of the surrounding neighborhoods and want a place to walk your dog.

The Anne Spencer House & Garden Museum in Lynchburg, Virginia, is a historic property that was once the home of Anne Spencer, a prominent Harlem Renaissance poet and civil rights activist. The two-story Queen Anne style house served as an ongoing project for Spencer throughout her 72 years there. The museum showcases personal memorabilia, art, antiques, and other treasures from her life. It offers visitors a unique glimpse into her contributions to literature and African American history.
My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful tour from Anne Spencer's granddaughter. The stories she shared of visiting her grandmother, the Harlem renaissance poet and civil rights activist, and playing in the gardens brought back sweet memories of visiting my own grandmother and playing on her front porch.
The house, located in a historic neighborhood, is almost completely intact with the original furniture, family photos and notes tacked up on the kitchen cabinet. The garden is peaceful, shady and enclosed in a way that allows you to lose the sense of being on a city lot.
You need to make an appointment to tour the house but the gardens are open to the public.

Monument Terrace in Lynchburg is a significant city landmark that pays tribute to veterans of various wars, including the Civil War, Spanish-American War, and Vietnam campaigns. The 139 steps and terraces lead up to the Old Courthouse, now home to the Lynchburg Museum. At its base stands an iconic doughboy statue, with other sculptures and monuments lining the steps. The museum atop Monument Terrace commemorates local citizens who fought in both domestic and foreign conflicts.
One of the best War Memorials I've been to! It is extremely peaceful and the way they have honored thier local heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice is remarkable! If you're ever in the area, definitely take a few minutes to go and see it!

Housed in an 1808 home that once served as Union headquarters, this site is a great place to learn about the region's culture and past without spending all day there. Interned here back in college. The people are exceptional and truly care about preserving this location and the local history it has been exposed to over 180 years.
If I recall correctly, what is now "sandusky drive" just outside the current property that has a residential neighborhood along it used to be the driveway of the house back in the 1800s....it's almost a mile long.
Very nice place to immerse yourself in local history. The students did an amazing job and the guide Valerie was so sweet and informative. I loved The foamcore art, very creative and has lots of artistic potential. The clay engravings surprised me at how well different artists can coordinate because at first glance they appear to be done by the same artist. By August of 2019 they'll have a special exhibit for athletes. Be sure to call ahead and ask about hours, especially if you're driving far. Well worth your time and money

Small, but really nicely done museum, currently featuring local athletes. A friendly and well informed docent went through the exhibit with us. This group is doing great work! We made an unexpected stop at the nearby city cemetery as recommended by the docent. We will visit some other sites she recommended soon.

The Legacy Museum is a must see for all nationalities, but Blacks for sure. My niece and I learned so much about Lynchburg and its residents by visiting the Legacy Museum. Our tour guide Phyllistine dropped knowledge about each display including the original staircase. I could not believe the Legacy was so affordable and accessible. I’ll have to return with my daughter because I couldn’t remember all the details to inform her. I’ve added the Legacy on my list to bring my visitors when they come to Lynchburg.

It was a wonderful experience to tour the Legacy Museums newesr exhibition - The Development of an Athlete and to attend the unveiling of the historical marker for Marjorie Hill, one of the founding members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

The Legacy Museum is a well kept secret in Lynchburg. It preserves the history of Lynchburg and the surrounding counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, and Campbell counties for African Americans. It collaborates with the Museum system in Lynchburg and other local historical sites to provide the complete picture of history in Central Virginia. It is well worth a side trip to take in the current music exhibit and future artistic exhibit coming in the summer of 2017.

The guide was amazing. She was very knowledgeable about Lynchburg and the historical information. The artifacts were outstanding. The atmosphere was very warm.
Great little nature center! Easy going. There's several terrariums with live reptiles and frogs. There's a bank of drawers with all sorts of things the kids could pick up and handle and touch and hold. Bones, snake skins, epoxy-embedded insects, etc. There's a number of taxidermied animals, mostly birds. The attendant there was eager to answer questions.
Our kids had a great time. We only spent about 30 minutes there to see everything, but definitely worth doing!

Amazing staff! Quite an array of reptiles to see and small activities to do. Perfect for a rainy day or any day really.

A very educational place to go and it's free. I thought the animals were adorable and the nature guide really knew alot about everything. It's a tiny room but It's great if It's a rainy day or you just want to teach your kids about nature and they are intrigued but have short attention spans. My youngest didn't want to leave!

They didn't have the squirrel that they advertise. The possum was cool but other than that and the hedgehog, you can see all these live animals at the local pet store. The volunteers that were in there feeding the animals weren't very friendly, and one young boy that was with them pushed my 2 year old out of the way to get to a turtle my son was trying to look at (which made me mad of course). This is all in one small room which would be too closed-in for more than 6 or 7 people.

It was a nice quaint place to visit. My 3 year old loved it but my 9 year old niece said it was boring. Due to covid they had the doors locked so we had to walk around the whole building. A friendly neighbor helped us out and he knocked on a window until he got somebody's attention at which point they finally opened the main door to let us in. They didn't have too many live animals and the place is actually in the middle of a neighborhood. My 3 year old keeps asking about going to see the animals but I don't think the drive is worth it. We live about an hour away and the exhibits just aren't worth it. I probably won't be visiting again any time soon.

Kids had fun. The staff were informative and hands on. Snake feedings happen on Fridays about 1pm.

Brought all the kids here for a visit during our family reunion and it was a big hit! There are not a lot of animals but still plenty to see and do. A really good opportunity for teaching moments between parents and children.

This was a very disappointing animal/reptile exhibit, if that's what it could be called.
I took my 16 and 17 year old there on a field trip while we were in Virginia and it was not worth the gas or time it took to get there.
I would not recommend the Nature Zone to anyone but to those with children under 5.
It literally is one room with a couple snakes, a turtle, and maybe 3 other reptiles. It had a few taxidermied animals and a few other minor things. I was extremely unimpressed.
