The Devonian Fossil Gorge is a remarkable archaeological site that showcases remains of an ancient ocean floor dating back 375 million years. It's a popular destination for families with young children and pets, boasting well-maintained trails, a small play area, and opportunities to observe pelicans by the beach. Visitors can also learn about fossil formation in an educational setting and see firsthand what they look like in their natural environment.
This place is so fun for families with young ones and dogs. We found a ton of fossils and had a great time climbing the rocks and seeing the dam. The trails are well kept and we even saw some Pelicans down by the beach. The small play area was great for the kiddos too! We took 3 dogs and 2 toddlers who had a blast even though it was rainy and chilly.

Amazing fossils and geological history. We visited on an unseasonably warm February Sunday. Planned to spend about a half hour but spent an hour and a half. Wear stable walking shoes that you don't mind getting a little dirty. Truly an amazing learning experience and worth a visit.

We only stopped by for a short time but it was really worth a visit. Our children just learned formation of fossils in classes, and now they get to see what a fossil really looks like and where to find them out! Want to make your trip more educational? I'd strongly recommend this place to all families with children in elementary school!

Very cool place. I went end of November on a nice day. No maps but there are online resources if you Google. This place is definitely a slow down and look place as the fossils don't just stand out. There is a trail at the end of the gorge that walks beside the river. Bathrooms by the campground this time of year are disgusting as the water is turned off so beware.

If you ever find yourself on a car trip that goes anywhere in Iowa, see how far out of your way this place is. So beautiful! I don't know much about fossils but was really impressed by what was here! They have a nice brochure online to read off what the numbers mean as you meander through! I had the whole place to myself. I saw in other reviews that people have observed eagles down by the water as you walk this gorge. And I'm happy to say that's absolutely true, I watched two adult eagles hunting for fish in the water, something I have never seen IRL and was so excited to witness. I was by myself but it would be a great place for kids to explore. Could have a picnic down by the water and make it a whole afternoon!

We visited while on a road trip. So glad we went. Plan about an hour or more depending on your level of interest in fossils. We also walked along path between Iowa River and fossil gorge.

A really great stop, just two adults, although I can see a huge draw for children. We travel a lot and I was glad to have found this stop. Visited for about 2 hours but there are trails and a great campground near as well for much longer stays.

Love the gorge - there is a handicap accessible area next to the parking lot with a little information on the Devonian era. A fee boulders line the walkway and you can see fossils on these.
Gorge itself is not handicap accessible, but my 2 and 4 year old get around pretty easily throughout the area. There are tons of fossils if you keep a sharp eye. Coral and shells. The gorge also has little ponds that fill with frogs and may have an occasional crawfish or snake.
Really fun area to take out of town guests or your kids for an outdoor adventure (without tons of hiking).
Don’t damage the rocks / take the fossils.

Nice little park to visit in Iowa City. Easy to find fossils. Fairly easy to walk around. I think it would be fun for kids. I wish there was more information. There are various numbers around the park but no descriptions. There are a few signs with info near the entrance but something by each number in the park would be nice. However, it's free and interesting place to spend an hour or so.
Kinnick Stadium is a massive football arena with over 70,000 seats and serves as the home turf for the University of Iowa Hawkeyes. It is renowned for its legendary status and is a popular destination for sports enthusiasts. The stadium offers an unforgettable experience with incredible fans who create a magical atmosphere during games. Additionally, Kinnick Stadium has recently started serving beer inside the premises, making it an even more enjoyable place to watch games.
A last minute trip to see Penn State vs. Iowa at a legendary venue. It lived up to the billing! Iowa fans were unbelievable. Stopped by several tailgates to talk football and enjoy food and hospitality. One of the best sporting event experiences of my life. Kudos! Bonus points, they now serve beer inside the stadium!

Outstanding venue! There really isn't a bad seat in the stadium. I had a great time visiting. The restrooms were not too over crowded!!! There is a line but you move through quickly. The overall best change is the addition of alcohol sales. Go Hawks!

Nice, clean, well-maintained stadium at the University of Iowa. On game days, the stadium fills with enthusiastic fans from near and far. The stadium is situated in Iowa City where there are many restaurants, shops, and attractions downtown. The city has excellent hotels, award winning architecture, beautiful parks, and natural features.

Great fans and people, always liked Iowa. The Wave is the best thing in college football and I was honored to take part. Beer at this stadium sucks but everything else is great, except the Iowa offense ;)

This is a pretty neat stadium. Being so close to the players was pretty cool. The wave to the children's hospital at the end of the 1st quarter was very sad but gratifying. Good place to visit.

I have lived in Iowa many years and had not made it to a game. I was missing out! The game intros were sooo EXCELLENT! A LIVE hawk flew over, the band❤! (Wow!) The fans were even so good all around. Mid West kind is still alive and well! 🏈 Go HAWKS!

What a great stadium. This stadium is named after the University of Iowa legend Nile Kinnick and is a touching tribute to his honor and legacy. The stadium as its own is very nice. There are lots of vendors and a nice view from anywhere. There is a beautiful tradition that the university does. At the end of the first quarter, everyone waves to the children's hospital. The fans are the best and usually appropriate for all ages. I highly recommend it! Go Hawkeyes!! #FightforIowa #Bye-byeBrian

Great venue and perfect size place. Probably an even better experience towards the winter/colder game days when less crowded.

A great place to watch the game. The fans are awesome. When you hear the roar of the crowd after a touchdown or interception, it’s magic.
When the crowd waves to the kids in the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, it’s a different type of magic.
Go Hawks!

An absolutely amazing experience! The atmosphere is electric, seats all around are fantastic, and concessions and bathrooms are easily accessible. The best thing though is the fans and the wonderful people of Iowa. I can’t say enough about how impressed I was by the polite, respectful Hawkeye fans. Can’t wait to come back for another game!
Dane Smith — Google review
I love the atmosphere and fans in Iowa. I think the only thing that's disappointing is the cashless payments for concessions and I think the brats have changed since I went last. The end of the 1st quarter wave to the kids in the hospital is the best thing in college football.
Tyson Edwards — Google review
It's a great loud atmosphere. Fans are very friendly, even to the opposing team (as long as there isn't too much chirping going on). The beer and food lines are efficient, and I like the fact that local charities work the concessions stands. Don't miss the food vendors across the street.
Kinnick has the best tradition in college football with the wave to the Children's Hospital.

I have been going to Iowa football games since 1968. Fans have gone downhill. Excessive booing, throwing stuff, abusive language to the guest team..... I am a lifelong loyal Hawkeye, but some fans today are embarrassing. Go Hawks.
The Old Capitol Museum is a historic and iconic building that was previously used as a government center. It boasts a striking gold dome and features exhibits on local history that are spread across three floors. The museum is well-preserved, having undergone extensive restoration after it caught fire several years ago. The staff are friendly and helpful, and although there is no entrance fee, visitors are encouraged to donate at the entrance with the recommended amount for adults being $5 and $1 for students.
1st time in the Old Capitol Museum. Very well preserved. The stairway alone was worth the visit. It caught fire a number of years ago but they did a wonderful job of restoration.

Gal at the front was incredibly helpful! Building is beautiful and well-built, especially after the fire. There's a great display in the basement of before and after the fire and some knowledgeable ladies who were going into the Archive Room down there. It was fun to see the difference in the Old Capitol Senate and House Rooms and the ones in the Des Moines Capitol. Fun facts are posted in all the rooms as well. The gift shop had a lot of neat stuff in it too!

This is a very cool little piece of Americana history. I really apreciate that they really keep restrictions as minimal as possible. You can really get right up to the artifacts. I really apreciated the extra tid bits about interactions with Native peoples. The place is really cleen and well done. The bathrooms are nice too. The room in the basement level also has so modern things done for the university. A great place to take photos and everyone was friendly it's also free!

Lovely renovated historic capitol building, right in the middle of the University of Iowa campus. There is a docent at the door, and a self guided tour, with information panels telling the story of the building. Make sure to note the staircase going to the ground floor, since it does have some unusual curves to it. This is also a lovely venue for smaller events.

The Old Capitol remains one of the most recognizable symbols of the state of Iowa. In the many years since the cornerstone was laid, the building has served state legislatures, countless university uses, and has undergone multiple additions and renovations, even surviving a major fire in 2001.

As many many many have said parking is probably equivalent to purgatory. The way the valet people park cars around the entrances make pulling up to the entrance and dropping someone off problematic at best. The hospital staff as a rule is helpful and glad to be of assistance. Beware of the almost CONSTANT construction going on both on campus and off. Give yourself extra time to get to were you need to be in the hospital. Don't be afraid to use the PAT transport.

Having had done my undergraduate at 3 different colleges (2 universities and 1 community college), and done my grad work at UI; I can say I have a pretty experienced opinion and UI is the worst college I've been to. It's essentially an adult day care for parents of rich, snobby adult students who act like teens and only want to part.

The farm is located 10min outside of Iowa City. The farm was huge and was busy on a sat. We did pick strawberries and tasted their cider. They also have a BBQ place and a restaurant on site. I assume they will be good. The staff were friendly and polite. Overall a great place.

Great place to visit in the fall!! They did start charging a bit more recently…admission to the apple orchard is now $5 (previously free) and you don’t get quite as many you-pick apples for the same price. They also charge a good amount for picking wildflowers ($20-30), but the experience is fantastic! The store has a great selection of merchandise, honey, sweet butters, and cider, but is quite busy, so be ready to wait in line! Make sure to get a fresh bakery item - the donuts are a big hit - and a cider when you’re visiting and enjoy some live music!

Wilson’s is such a great place to visit during ALL seasons. They offer so much & a nice little store front with everything from gifts to apple pies. You must try their ciders if you go because they are the BEST! Tulip picking season is gorgeous & I don’t know anywhere else you can get a large mason jar of tulips so inexpensively. Raspberry picking season might be my favorite. There is nothing better than fresh picked raspberries! Pumpkin seasons is also great, as is the live outdoor music season. They also have a great restaurant on site that is a one-of-a-kind experience with excellent, locally sourced foods. I recommend Sunday brunch on the large outdoor deck. It is fabulous! They accept (and encourage) reservations.

It's a nice site and the staff is generally kind. No complaints with respect to the cashiers/helpers or the scenery at all.
Unfortunately they have started charging for entrance, but only to the actual 'orchard' that contains the trees - so, charging money for the privilege of paying more money for apples. There is little indication given on the website, and that's the main reason I'm writing this - so that people can find out easier. Online the $5 charge is briefly mentioned in plain text on an event page several clicks in - if you already know about it you can perhaps find it after the fact.
I read the replies from the company on other reviews. I get that many other spots charge, and you have a right to do something about waste/shrink and remain profitable. There's distinctions to make though and people do have a point that isn't addressed.
Those other competitors that charge money for admission clearly state it on the home page, and they have various things or activities that are included in the price. The fee-only area here only (as far as I know) contains what we already pay you to do.. picking apples. I get it if prices need to go up, I'm saying the execution of it is just strange.
Don't get me wrong, the site itself is nice and I liked my visit last year - I got a basket of delicious apples then - but the above is why people feel the need to leave a review to inform others. I'll just stick to another orchard that will only charge me once to pick my apples.
Needing to increase prices right now is completely understood and I wouldn't be put off by that - it's this weird execution that leaves behind a sour taste.

We had our wedding at Wilson’s this fall and the whole event was amazing. The venue is beautiful and the food was amazing. Everyone at Wilson’s was easy to work with and they were very prompt to respond anytime we had questions throughout the whole planning process. Thanks to Laura, Kennedy and the incredible staff behind the scenes, everything went off without a hitch on our wedding day. We received countless compliments from our guests on the food; many people said it was the best wedding meal they’d ever had. We would highly recommend Wilson’s as a venue for any event.

Not from here and my friend took me here. I had a great experience. Right up front the admissions lady was so friendly. She was up front with us and told us what they did and did not have available for picking. She also told us on our side of the creek was free, and if we wanted to cross the creek it was 5 bucks and 8 for tractor admission. There is lots to do on the first side of the creek. Got some great photos. The apple cider donuts, hard apple cider and the pizza was wonderful. And last minute we decided to do the tractor ride. It was the longest tractor ride ive been on. Totally worth the cost. And it was so fun and the man who drives the tractor is so nice and funny ❤️

I've been going to Wilson's Apple Orchard for many years as a family tradition. It is a great place for kids of all ages. As with all farming, the apple picking quality is dependent on how the season has been and when you go in the fall (different apples are ripe at different times). They have a store where you can buy delicious pre-picked apples along with a bunch of other items. Most importantly, be sure to try their apple donuts and apple slashes!

Wilson’s is the BEST orchard and pumpkin picking. We go every year and always snatch up a mulled hot cider and apple cider donuts in the barn before we leave. The apple picking is super fun, but a little bit of a trek if you choose to walk. Tractor rides are available though!
Apples and pumpkins are both priced fairly and there’s no entrance fee so you can spend all your money on the fun things :)
Super packed on weekends and parking fills up quick so best to go at their quieter hours or during the week.

We visited the new Des Moines location for their soft opening and were absolutely blown away. Our server, Stephen, was knowledgable and had great recommendations. We had a hard time narrowing down which appetizers to get, so ordered dang near all of them. We HIGHLY recommend Warmed Peanuts, Peruvian Chicken Skewers, Curry Deviled Eggs, and Creole Crawfish Dip as starters. We were able to save some room to try out their pizzas and glad we did. They were cooked to perfection, the Mortimer was our favorite. We can’t wait to watch this location expand and continue to thrive.

The University of Iowa Museum of Natural History is a popular destination in Iowa City, featuring permanent exhibits that showcase the flora and fauna of the natural world, as well as the rich history of Iowa. Visitors can explore displays highlighting mammals and birds, among other topics. The gift shop staff is friendly and helpful, providing a pleasant experience for guests. Families often make it an annual tradition to visit this museum due to its extensive collection that could take hours to fully appreciate.
This has easily become one of my favorite places in Iowa City! I've been twice and the second time I was even more excited then the first! So many cool exhibits to look around, I could spend hours (I actually did spend hours), and the people working the gift shop are so so friendly, helpful, and patient. I have been going here since I was a kid. I've taken my children here as a parent. This place is amazing. Iowa history, biodiversity, animals, and prehistory. Some of the exhibits look worn and faded but some of them are well over a hundred years old. What an outstanding place to spend an afternoon with the family. OKish parking and central location in the Old Capital area make it easy to get in and out. A must visit for anyone in Eastern Iowa.

Such a cool place! It was a lot bigger than I expected it to be and there were so many great exhibits; our favorite was the bird hall on the third floor. Some of the larger taxidermied animals had visible seams but otherwise looked fantastic; I imagine being a museum that doesn’t charge admission it’s a bit hard to get professionals to go in and repair the animals. Either way, it didn’t take away from the experience and the ones with visible seams overall still looked great!

Newish to the area, and well done trail, and the view along the Iowa River is awesome. Love biking on the singletrack here, as never very many people at once. However went yesterday as the first time in 5 months since surgery and was cleared to and able to ride. Was grossly disappointed in the timbering/clearcutting that has occurred recently on the NW corner (South of McCollister, between the Iowa River and Sand Lake). Was glad to see some of the honeysuckle cut out, but the 100+ year old trees clear cut was horrendous. What's next? Parking lot here?

Beautiful place for a walk. Sand Lake is a reclaimed quarry in Iowa City, near the Iowa River. There is an excellent wide paved path, 1.9 miles long, circling the lake. There are several access points with parking, three toilet facilities (one is a portable), and drinking water is available at two locations. There are many benches placed along the trail, which runs between the lake and a native prairie restoration project. It's a great area for dog walks. There are two large picnic shelters and a modern event center. All plantings are native plants, and support native pollinators. Waterfowl, land birds, insects and amphibians are abundant; probably, reptiles, too, if you want to look for them. There is a playground near the event center.

Carver-Hawkeye Arena is a spacious and renowned indoor stadium that hosts a variety of sporting events such as wrestling duals, college basketball games and more. Despite seating limitations closer to the floor, visibility generally isn't an issue for spectators. Additionally, a jumbo screen helps prevent blocked views when the crowd gets excited and people stand up. Convenient parking options are available but expect to walk some distance from your car to the arena.

The Band was awesome as usual. The pyrotechnics were pretty cool...& the glitter bombs. I do wish they offered some healthier options for food and had more close parking available. Traffic before and after events can get a little crazy too. All as to be expected for events and venues like this however.

Unique basketball arena design with street level being the top of the stadium, with the court deep underground. All seats have a great view of the court and action. Friendly crowd even towards the visiting team's fans.

Amazing place to watch a game. Go Hawks!

We love attending wrestling duals in Carver Hawkeye Arena. While I would love to have seats closer to the floor, visibility doesn't tend to be an issue. The jumbo screen also helps with visibility when the crowd gets excited, people standing to their feet and block your view.
Parking near the arena is not bad. Just be prepared to walk a reasonable distance and then wait to get out when the event is over.
Carver Hawkeye is a great place to enjoy sporting events with your family. Go Hawks!

Such a fun and friendly environment! Came for a men's basketball ball game and the energy here is unreal! Such a fun experience! Facility was clean and had lots of stalls for food and drinks! Will definitely be coming back for more!!
The Englert Theatre, a century-old establishment in Iowa City, serves as an exceptional venue for various types of entertainment such as music, writing and comedy performances. Moreover, it also hosts art exhibits and plays. The theater is known for its impressive acoustics which complement the overall experience of attending a live performance. It operates efficiently with friendly and helpful staff that attend to the needs of its patrons from ticket purchasing to ordering drinks, ensuring that everything goes smoothly.
On our way home from a concert that became a party. The Mavericks in a small venue like Englert is the way to experience a live concert. The smaller crowd becomes a dance with your best friends. The acoustics in the venue was spot on.
One of favorite venues for a concert & we live 50 miles away. Worth the drive.

Theater was a nice facility, but they were stringent on masking. So much so that if you took a drink of your beverage of choice and didn't immediately replace your mask they had security hassle you. You had to show prof of vacation in order to get into the concert. If you are not going to allow people to take a drink of their beverage without publicly hassling them then don't serve beverages. I won't go back as even though I masked the entire time the constant mask police kind of ruined the experience. Unfortunate because the concert was very good.

This is a nice live theater. Located downtown. It is on the small size. Seats definitely are. Very small bar. Saw a performance of the touring group of Second City. Like all live comedy acts it really helps if you are a bit drunk. The act was definitely geared to college students but that was fine as Iowa City is a college town.

The Englert is a phenomenal venue for viewing the performing arts in Iowa City. Granted, Hancher Auditorium is outstanding and yet, there's something about seeing a live performance in the venerable old theater. If you have the chance to attend, please do. You won't be disappointed.

Always enjoy this classy joint. Beautiful, historically restored theater. Usually we'll staffed and run well. I wish they could open more lines for drinks though. It can take 30 minutes to get a drink when the lines are long.

Nice little Theater. Excellent sound quality, with a capacity just under 800 it is a great place to see a show.

I like the shows here, but the seating is terrible and ruins the experience entirely. You feel like packed sardines and are always rubbing shoulders with the people around you because of how compact it is. If you need to go to the bathroom or something, forget it because the entire row will need to move for you to get out. To feel comfortable here, you would need to buy the seats flanking you. On top of this, the actual seats are old, worn, and uncomfortable.
I wouldn't recommend it purely for the above. That's how bad the seating is.

I went to the Englert Theater to participate in a fundraiser for Girls On The Run annual Luna Fest & watch some great films made by women for women. The event was awesome & the films were very inspiring, moving me to tears & joy in some cases. It was a great venue for the film festival, silent auction, and treats. They also had 2 bars for ordering beer or wine.

I have seen several shows here and it is a fantastic venue. The staff and volunteers are always pleasant and the beer at the concessions is local and great options.

Love the venue, but the last three shows I've attended have been ear-splittingly loud. Nice of an Englert volunteer to pass out earplugs, but wouldn't it be better to tone it down a bit?

I've been to this theatre a couple of times and each time I went the staff were super friendly, the shows were great, and it overall made my experience a good one. Small place, but super tight-knit!
Good place to watch splashing water. Also dark enough for Neowise viewing.

It was closed. Hour sign says its only open Monday-Friday. Should be open at least on Saturday too! The area is a place many locals go and many go on Saturdays. Like DUH!!! Be closed on Mondays. Should even be open on Sunday but I'd settle for Sat. Have no idea what's in the building and any thing that would helpful to visitors.

Quirky and cute - great pitstop just off of I-80. There isn’t really parking so we just went on the side of the road but it’s a quick stop so it wasn’t an issue

What can you say about an extremely large wooden nickel on the side of the road? Not a lot of amenities, professionally crafted/constructed, you do take your life in your own hands whilst crossing the road. BUT it was not far of I-80. :) overall a fun, quirky, little stop
Valerie Deneau — Google review
Nice little break in our drive. Definitely a stop, take a pic and go type of thing. No parking and it looks like it's on private property behind a fence.

Oh Iowa, you skalliwag! You are fast becoming my favorite tourist state. Forget about the Grand Canyon or Mount Rushmore. Travel on over to Iowa and gaze at the largest wooden nickel, or the biggest popcornball, or Albert the bull. And don't forget about the tree in the road. You have kept your obscure and whitty representations of community pride slightly hidden. These roadside tidbits have not been easy to find. Shame, shame

Cool story behind this. I do recommend going during the day, as it’s not lit. But managed to get a cool photo with my phone. *No real ‘off of road’ parking. Be prepared to park on shoulder.*
Orion Roen — Google review
Not really worth stopping as it's in a field behind a fence. There is no safe pull off. There is a gravel lot across the street that belongs to the rock quarry but not safe to cross the road as it is fairly busy. Nothing to special about this other than someone made a wanna be wooden nickel that has seen better days.

I was not expecting it to be on the side of a road, behind a fence, in someone's farm, along a super busy highway with no parking. Alas I had to make a uturn after I missed it. There is a road across the street with some gravel parking area. I stopped, took a photo from across the street and got back in the car. It was not worth running across two directions of traffic to get a closer shot.

There should be a place to park off this busy road. It's not far off the freeway. I can now say that I saw it.

This sits along a fairly busy road and there was no parking unless you park along the edge or on the bike path. Was a neat thing to see. There is a fence between it and the road so you can’t get up close to it but you can get pretty good photos just be careful of the traffic.

About a mile off of I-80 in Iowa City is the World’s Largest Wooden Nickel. It comes up on you quickly on the right side as you are heading north. There is a slight pull off on the east side and a gated road on the west side. Nothing else around there but a fun distraction.
We visited the park to get in some steps, which turned into a history lesson. The trail is mainly shaded through the woods and is well paved. The various plaques that tell the story of the early Morman settlers' journey to Utah. They took the train to Iowa City and built handcarts for the rest of the trip because they couldn't afford oxen. The trail connects with the main trail along the river. It was well worth the visit.

Nice small park near the Coralville strip. The trail is made of asphalt and a little steep at the beginning but levels out along a ridge then to a large open area farther down. It is bounded on one side with a wooded area and prairie on the other. Great place to get out and stretch your legs. Easy to get to. Some interesting history to learn about also.

The Mormon Handcart Park is a lovely spot for a picnic and brief walk through history. This grove of trees is the riverside spot where nearly 3,000 members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints gathered, camped, prepared and departed for the 1,100 mile walk West.
The site includes a free parking area, picnic tables and benches, a cemetery and paved paths through the trees. Incredible to ponder how many of these European, Scandinavian and East Coast Americans traveled here to the “end of the railroad”, only to begin the next (and hardest) part of their journey west. Pioneers in the truest sense.
Note: “I Walked to Zion” by Susan Madden is a helpful history book containing personal journal / narratives from those who camped and gathered here before walking across the plains.
(Much gratitude to the University of Iowa for maintaining this important site.)

Robert Swenson — Google review
Nice paved(asphalt) trail. There are some sites to see and a couple good spots to look out into the woods. One of our favorites due to the location-it links up with a couple of other bike paths so we can easily walk a good distance. There is a parking lot, but no facilities on site. Not the widest path which makes it difficult when passing others, especially with double stroller. It closes at sundown.
Hancher Auditorium is a performing arts theater located in Iowa City, which hosts a variety of events such as Broadway musicals, contemporary dance performances and classical music concerts. The venue also serves as the location for graduation ceremonies and other similar events. With its exceptional acoustics, comfortable seating and unobstructed views of the stage, Hancher Auditorium provides an unforgettable experience for attendees.
The Iowa City community is so lucky to have Hancher Auditorium return to the area after the flood of 2008. We make it a point to take our kids to as much programming as possible each season. From musicals, poetry, art exhibits, or Broadway plays, Hancher brings it all. The theater seats are comfortable and there are no bad seats in the place. The acoustics are wonderful. We enjoy going early for a bite to eat in the cafe and delicious cocktails. You can even pre-order cocktails for intermission! Besides the stunning interior, Hancher is a feast for the eyes outside too. There are no straight lines, it almost seems as though the building bows to the city above. It is a beautiful backdrop for photos and photography shoots.

As a native of NYC have attended many on and off Broadway productions. Only recently discovered the Hancher has performances on a television commercial for To Kill a Mockingbird. So happy to have had this opportunity.
From purchase to leaving the parking lot, everything about this auditorium is top notch based on this experience.
What I especially like is they offer print tickets at will and able to pick it up. As someone who saves stubs this was particularly meaningful.
Being able to see one of my all time favorite actors, Richard Thomas, here is a memory that hooked me to the location and desire for further event attendance.
The theater itself is very well run. Plenty of helpers for guidance when needed. The souvenir shop is easy to locate. Compared to other Iowa theaters like the Hoyt in Des Moines way better in this area and overall experience.
The seating is comfortable and plenty of leg room. View is wonderful. Appears so from any seat.
Ticket pricing is comparable to Des Moines large auditorium Broadway options I’ve attended in the past.
Definitely on my to return list.
Thank you for bringing such a brilliant production to the Iowa City area. Very much appreciated

This place was totally Awesome! The auditorium is huge! Very upbeat place! I would definitely recommend anyone to go there, if you get the chance! It's a very beautiful place! I would gladly give them more than 5 stars!
The acousticians made an absolutely fabulous space to hear perfectly from any of the 1600 seat in the auditorium. Even the everyday lighting was a marvel to behold!
Once again, I would like to repeat the acoustics are outstanding, and the three levels of seating appear to put you closer to the stage and amazing sound and lighting systems, there is not one bad seat in the house.

The Riverside Theatre is a non-profit black box theater located in downtown Iowa City that offers a variety of shows throughout the year, including both classic and contemporary works. The venue features comfortable seating with clear views of the centrally positioned stage from all angles, as well as an open bar and snack area accommodating up to 50 people. Additionally, the theater follows strict vaccination protocols to ensure visitor safety. Overall, it is highly recommended for anyone looking to enjoy an exceptional performing arts experience.
Riverside Theater is the best serious theater performance venue in the area. Many new plays have debuted here over the years. The new location on the pedestrian mall provides more space than they previously had and more opportunities for creative staging. Also vastly improved lobby, concessions, and bathroom areas.

We saw a great play "The Agitators". A story revolving around the friendship of Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony. It's a very dynamic two actor performance. Go see it if you can. The small theater has comfortable seating with a very good view of the stage, even in the second from the top row. A special rotating stage was built and used for this production.

High quality performances in a not-so-great venue. The top few rows (about row 6) of this small theater are nearly unusable due to low clearance and the stage configuration is strangely deep sometimes effecting the action and sound. The lobby is cramped and cold. The staff is helpful and they company creates some great shows despite the limits of their venue.

Wow! I'm very surprised that there aren't many reviews on this place. Just finished watching Black and Blue at the theater and I loved it. Barrington Vaxter masterfully portrayed Marcus, a nervous black man from the South side of Chicago that was traumatized by a past encounter with the Chicago PD. All of the performers were amazing and the set was beautiful, I felt like I was there. The play depicted both sides of the issues that are all too present today with the Black Lives Matter movement. I feel enlightened, great job Riverside Theater and all who were involved!

The Stanley Museum of Art boasts an eclectic array of artwork spanning from modern to African pieces, alongside Jackson Pollock's "Mural." Notably, the tray stands installation caught attention due to its ambiguity and lack of labeling. The museum offers a diverse collection including prints, ceramics, sculpture, and paintings. On weekends it can become quite busy but admission is free with convenient and affordable parking available. It also offers engaging scavenger hunts for children.

Wonderful (FREE) art museum on the University of Iowa campus. Stanley has a fantastic collection. The museum is not very large, so it is perfect for a visit with kids and nice for a non-daunting visit as an adult.
They do regular programming here for youth and adults. When we visited there was a scavenger hunt oriented game for kids. The staff was very professional and friendly. They made us feel really welcome.
One thing to note - food and drink are not allowed on the collection level. They have lockers free of charge to store your belongings.

The tray stands installation was what really caught my eye. I went to a small private art school in the hills and I have a feel for what it all means. It was left unlabelled so you can really make it your own. I felt like I could have taken one off the rack and set it up. It invites devious thought and may even be looked at askance by the uninitiated. Masterful.

Gallery opened August 2022, collection for University of Iowa has good breadth, reflecting the current mood of students through the curation. Second floor is a ring of adjoining rooms. Third floor currently has prints (not well labeled), seems more like a teaching room than for public visitors.

The art inside is amazing! But why does our art building look like a prison from the outside??? I wish they would get rid of the gray concrete wall around the outside. I wish they would get rid of the solid gray building. Add some color add some murals. I bet there are hundreds of artists in IC who would love to help make the art museum look like an art museum.

Honestly not worth a second visit. I visited a couple months back and it was mildly interesting at best, I came back today and there were no new exhibits or artworks worth coming back too. It didn’t help that the opening hours listed on Apple Maps was an hour late making me pay for an extra hour of parking i definitely didn’t need. The staff were pretty rude and confrontational this time as well, if you have 20 minutes to kill maybe go but it’s not worth multiple visits
The Brown Street Inn is a refined B&B located in a 1913 mansion. The accommodations are elegant with a warm library, porch and living room. The innkeepers Christine and her husband are personable and make guests feel at home. It offers an alternative to typical hotel stays, providing visitors with a unique experience. It's conveniently located near downtown Iowa City and the college campus making it an ideal choice for those visiting students or attending events in the area.
I had a lovely stay at The Brown Street Inn. I came in as a guest of the university and the Inn is very close by. I had an easy time getting to campus as well as to my favorite Iowa City haunts--Prairie Lights and Bluebird Diner, among others. Christine and her family made me feel very welcome. And I really enjoyed her baked treats that were a part of the breakfast spread. I will absolutely stay here again.

Be aware that the Brown Street Inn requires that you have the Covid vaccine and be fully boosted. They cancelled our reservation when they found out we didn't meet their vaccine requirements, even though at the time we made the reservation there was no mention of vaccine requirements. Then, when we contacted them, they placed the blame on the third party who booked us. So we had the booking for several weeks before we were cancelled, and it was hard for us to find another hotel at that later date as it is a football game weekend. Whatever you may think of this requirement in 2023, people need to know about it before booking this place.
The Brown Street Inn's Covid policy is not easy to find. They don't have it spelled out clearly on their main pages, but you can find it on a link at the bottom of the page. To find it, scroll down to the very bottom of the webpage until you see Quick Links. Under Quick Links, go to 'policies'. Here is what it says under policies:
COVID-19
"At this time, we are requiring all guests to be vaccinated and have received all CDC recommended boosters. This allows us to make masking optional in common areas of the Inn. If we are unable to determine that guests are vaccinated when they arrive, we will be unable to honor their reservation."

This was our second time staying but our first time since the new owners took over in May. The website reservation system was easy to use, the checkin and out process was seamless. My husband was especially excited by the homemade chocolate chip cookies that were waiting when we arrived. The food was delicious without being overdone. Over all we had a wonderful experience and would come back again in a heartbeat.
