The Gladys Porter Zoo is a wildlife park spanning 4 continents, with over 377 species of animals. Visitors can enjoy an aquarium and reptile house, as well as a children's playground for ages 4 and up. The petting zoo is currently closed but will reopen soon. The zoo offers several sensory items and clean environments for the animals. While visitors may spend at least three hours exploring the grounds, they should also plan to spend some time at the concessions during their visit.
This place has plenty of animals and a few more new additions coming soon!, the petting zoo wasn't open, but I'm sure by the beginning of next year it will be up and running again. This place also has a children's playground, available for kids 4 years and older. You can expect to spend at least 3 hours here, including time for the concessions, and a quick 5-10 minute sit down. It's a very decent sized zoo, my son and wife loved it.

I have been to this zoo plenty of times since ive been 5 years old, I am now 25. This place never gets old. they have removed the big wood bridge and changed it to concrete. I still do miss the elephants. Harambe the gorilla was born in this zoo btw.

Having revisited Gladys Porter Zoo after 12 years, I was pleasantly surprised by the improvements I observed. My previous visit left me with concerns about the animals' well-being, but this time around, it was evident that they were being well taken care of and appeared happy.
The zoo premises were noticeably cleaner, contributing to a more enjoyable experience. However, I couldn't help but notice a decrease in the number of animals compared to my last visit. While this sparked mixed feelings, it also led to moments of nostalgia as I reminisced about the zoo from over a decade ago. They still have the animal water fountains.
Despite my mixed feelings about zoos in general, I appreciated the opportunity to share the experience with my baby nephew. Overall, my visit to Gladys Porter Zoo was filled with nostalgia and offered a renewed perspective on the importance of animal welfare in captivity.

I usually have mixed feeling about zoo's. In this case, I was surprisingly impressed with almost every individual environment. Very clean with several waterfalls, and sensory items.
Other than the black bear. That little guy needs more.
So great job zoo! 👏

I was impressed for being a small zoo they did a great job in maintaining the place. The giraffes were unavailable since it was cold and rainy. The gift shop had some really nice gifts at a decent price.

This smaller zoo is in Brownsville Texas. There are so many different animals to see. Don’t miss your chance to feed the giraffes $. You can touch the rays in the aquarium. Birds are in abundance here and there are so very exotic colors.
The normal water, food, beer, gift shop, etc.. Maybe a little pricey but we’ll worth it. They offer discounts.
Parking closer to the entrance $ but across the street is free.

Excellent Zoo, great use of shade trees scattered throughout the Zoo, to allow some relief from the sun at most exhibits. Great selection of animals. Excellent flow and design to the zoo, to allow the natural landscape of Texas to be incorporated into African, Australian, and other continents natural habitats.
Side notes.... $5 parking to get into the zoo, low traffic levels during the week (which is nice, you won't be walking on top of other patrons). Bathrooms are clean, walkways are well kept.
The walk through bird cages are awesome!!

With children I give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. There are a decent selection of animals. 🦩🐇🦝🦦🦔🦥🐿️🦒🐪🦣🦧🦍🦓🐆🦓🦚🦜
There’s plenty for kids to engage with & they have a very nice playground. 👶🏻👧🏽🧒🏼👦🏿
⚠️ There weren’t a ton of food options when we last went. 🥨🌭🍕🍨🍦🥤🧃Another big PRO in my book is the gift shop has a decent selection of CHEAP gifts. That way when your kid is begging you don’t have to pay a small fortune to get out of there. 🤑It’s worth the drive to give the kids the experience even though it’s not the most spectacular zoo it’s a good experience. 🐒🦍🐘🦛
(For my family to date. Check back things could always change. 😁)

'T was a great experience! In this visit, I ventured a bit south and loved it. I loved how much interaction one can have with some of these beautiful exotic creatures. My child feared absolutely nothing. At some point, she wanted to pet the croc, alligator, and snapping turtle. I was able to witness and capture an image of a tiger capturing its prey. He was diligent, mind you. The goats were so happy, of course, they were pampered and fed. Why wouldn't they be? I really do recommend this as a place to visit as you have a bit of a lot. It is such a great experience for adults and children.

Such a cute zoo. Wish more of the concession stands were open in the zoo, but I know with covid there are staffing shortages. The zoo is well maintained and the staff were all friendly. Especially the young man running the petting zoo today.

I usually love the zoo and I've been to the zoo many times. The only reason why I'm giving it four stars today is because I think on this particular day was a little bit cold, but a lot of the animals that usually are out. We're not out on display and it actually had been a while since I've been to the zoo so I was kind of hoping to see the other stuff that I used to like. Also, I got to feed a giraffe and it was an extra $3 per person but it was well worth it

I was very impressed by this zoo. Adults and kids in the family enjoyed it. There were so many different animals. Go during their lunch time the animals are very active and you can watch them be fed. We spent about 3 hours here. It was helpful with kids that there was always a bathroom available and close by. The zoo is clean amd well kept.

Absolutely a HUGE disappointment! Filthy place(exhibits) Trash laying next to where the animals are . IN the exhibits! No one there bothering to clean up anything. Staff wandering around everywhere looking at their phones instead of keeping the place clean. Where people are is OK but the animals languish in filth. Empty water bottles, paper, food boxes(obviously tossed there by busy)
BUT NO ONE CLEANING ANYTHING.
This could be a nice place but it is unkempt.
I was going to demand a refund but just wanted to leave. I will not go back and recommend spending your tourist dollars on a museum or something else.
I HATE to leave this bad of a review but I can’t find anything positive to say about it except the price is very good ( if it were worth it)

There are many rare species and I was able to see them for the first time!!!, kids were happy and impressed at the aquarium. Zoo needs a little cleaning or renovation, the construction looks old or lacks maintenance

We loved the zoo! We got there right when they opened, which was a perfect time to go. It was not packed or hot yet. The zoo is not too big or too small, and had a great variety of animals like the bigger zoos do. The Dino Fury was going on for an extra $5 per person, we weren’t very impressed, but wasn’t too bad for an extra $20. Our kids enjoyed feeding the giraffes and we especially appreciated the price of only $3, compared to the bigger zoos who usually charge a lot more for the feedings. They also gave you a lot of feed, so the interaction with the giraffes was meaningful and worth the experience, not rushed. We wanted to feed the tortoises too, but we visited during the feeding time and no one showed.

Gladys Porter Zoo is a world renown wildlife preserve! Because of its location it takes advantage of the natural subtropical climate that exists in the region. This climate makes it ideal for harboring the worlds exotic animals in open air exhibits!
And for those of you that love exotic flora, the Gladys Porter Zoo is a contained botanical garden that showcases some of the worlds flora specimens as well as its fauna!
Located in the heart of Brownsville, its stands as one of the city's iconic attractions! A Clear winner for the whole family! Certainly not to be missed if your in town!
FunNote: Sit with Americas National Bird at the aviary and enjoy some ice cold beers to cool you off while you enjoy the magnificence of the American Bald Eagle.
We enjoyed the winter Texas discount for out of state people.

Sabal Palm Sanctuary is a biodiverse preserve that boasts a variety of vegetation and wildlife, including a preserved plantation house from 1892. The area offers easy-to-walk trails with opportunities for spotting animal tracks, butterflies, dragonflies, and birds. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful deck that provides an excellent view of Mexico across the river. The house's antique-filled interior features an impressive fresco dating back around 100 years.
We only got to do one trail that was about .25 miles. It's very pretty there and has easy to walk trails. The house is very nice as well with nice antiques inside. Even a nice fresco that dates back about 100 years.
The place is on the other side of the border wall but still technically in the US. Funny enough our phones said "Welcome to Mexico" as soon as we pulled in.
There is a deck you can actually look across the river at Mexico from.

Absolutely beautiful Plantation House on gorgeous property. Lots of trails for easy walking. It's March and the Temp was 77* and it was pretty warm and humid. Butterfly garden, lake viewing deck and viewing deck overlooking the (Lilly pad overgrown section of the) Rio Grand River. Benches all around to redt and observe. Plenty of parking. You can view the 1st floor of the home as well. Nice piece of preserved history!

The house is beautiful. It's the RGV version of Bishop's Palace. The trails are amazing. We walked about three miles. It's shady, and there are animal tracks and butterflies and dragonflies and birds. We had a great time.

We were the only people here during our visit. Very nicely marked trails. Would have liked an app that would have marked where we were. Specifically went to the bird feeding station but it appeared it had not been used in awhile. (Not sure if it's only seasonal that they feed them?) Loved walking around and seeing the river. And people were not kidding about using mosquito spray. They are hungry.

Beautiful grounds. There is no charge to see the house. Nice souvenirs. Great bathroom. Airbnb here. Never did the trails. Bring mosquitoe spray, I hear, though. Man working the shop could have a little more personality.

This is definitely the best nature reserve/sanctuary in the RGV, and we had a wonderful afternoon excursion here. The historical plantation house is in the Queen Anne architectural style, and is quite the visual marvel. Furthermore, the estate's overall relative seclusion added greatly to its immersive ambiance. We will undoubtedly be revisiting again.

Tucked out along the Rio Grande River, on the STILL United States side of a border wall. The first of many sites is the Rabb Plantation house. The two story Victorian house, built in the LATE 1800S, is the visitor center for the sanctuary. With many trails to venture amongst a dense population of sabal palms. Many endangered animals from all genomes. A butterfly garden slash pollinator garden for many species to enjoy. And a bird population to fill the pages of any bird watchers journal. Sabal palm sanctuary is a great place to just get out and enjoy nature.

We ended up here very spontaneously, I wasn’t dressed accordingly so we didn’t stay long. It’s a very nice plantation to take pictures. If you forgot to take water they water bottles for sale in there. As soon as I read scorpions, snakes, spiders, and bobcats I was like nope I’m out 🥴 if I had been wearing the appropriate shoes and clothes maybe I mean maybe I would’ve stayed and walked a trail ☺️ if you like trails then this is a good spot!

This place is so gorgeous. I can't believe it's located here in Brownsville. Really gives off jungle vibes. The trails are easy to navigate, and the scenery is breathe taking. There is an entry fee, and in case you run out of water, they sell bottles for $1, which came in so handy after finishing ours. Don't forget to spray yourself down with bug spray for ticks.
Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park is a notable location from the year 1846, and features an informative visitor center with interactive exhibits, trails that are well maintained by the grounds keeper for visitors to safely walk on, along with guided tours. The state of Texas has taken measures to keep this battlefield updated over time. With cannons and information signs around the field, it's a great way to learn about local history and wildlife.
Had the opportunity to visit here today and really liked it. From the moment we checked in, we were helped and greeted professionally by staff. After watching a quick movie about the history, we made the walk out and back. It’s roughly a mile and very well paved. We were able to see a couple of Western Rattlesnakes mating and a Texas Tortoise today. Well worth the visit!

Today, I visited the place where the Mexican, American War began.
When Texas was annexed in 1846, disputes over its boundaries and ownership pushed the US and Mexico toward war. At the time, the US President James Polk claimed all of Texas, including its Rio Grande border, and of course, the President of Mexico insisted Mexico still owned Texas. Thus began negotiations, which failed, and discussions transpired between the parties involved, which terms could not be reached. In order to fully understand what transpired, one needs to read the story about the Mexican and US War.
I would recommend you visit the two or more Battlefields near Brownsville, Texas. It's an excellent opportunity to gain knowledge about this doubling the size of the United States.
Jim Bennett — Google review
The visitors center was very informative and the staff was very friendly. The older gentleman was super nice, gave my girls activity books, sat us in a room to watch a 15-minute short of the war, and went further explaining some articles they have.

The state of Texas has continuously updated or revived the battlefields over the years. Being that it is a battlefield, quite literally a large field, the welcome center, well kept trails and information signs plus cannons are a great way to get out and enjoy the day. Reading about local history and wildlife is a bonus

Cool experience and full of history. The museum piece is pretty small, and unless you're reading all the details, it should only take 20 minutes to watch a video and look through. Employees were amazing and very knowledgeable. I'll have to go back to experience the outdoor portion - it was too hot when we went. It looks like a long trail.
Rochelle Williams — Google review
Great living history events. They never disappoint! They even show a demonstration of the cannons going off and how they prepared and shoot with the antique muskets. Historical facts are shared with the public in every event. Just bring your own cold drink if you go during hot weather, high temperatures can reach 107 degrees pretty fast, and a hot drink in colder weather. Definitely more enjoyable during colder weather.

On the Northern border of Brownsville, TX is a National Park unit which preserves the grounds of the May 8, 1846, Battle of Palo Alto. It was the first major conflict in a border dispute that soon precipitated the Mexican -American War. The U.S. Army's victory here made the invasion of Mexico possible. The historic site portrays the battle and the war, and its causes and consequences, from the perspectives of both the United States and Mexico.

Resaca De La Palma State Park and World Birding Center spans across 1,200 acres of land and offers various activities such as biking trails, observation decks, butterfly gardens and tram tours. The park is an ideal location for a morning hike or afternoon picnic with family, with well-defined trails that are clean and have benches and clear signs.
Great place to go for a morning hike, bike ride, or an afternoon picnic with the family. Trails are well defined and clean, some of them have observation decks; they have benches and clear signs. There’s lots of trees and vegetation in the park and of course lots of birds and wildlife.

***Tram tours are not offered daily***
I was disappointed to find that out when I arrived. So I rented a bike, only to find out after paying for it bikes are not allowed on all the trails. Only the tram road! So I had to pick and choose which trails to park bike and hike. The gnats were bad. There was no water when I went, so not many water fowl. The state doesn't seem to care for our flag (See photo). Very tattered. They say to pack trash out, but that doesn't include shotgun shells (saw a couple, see photo). The bikes are not for tall people. I'm 5'11" and struggle to raise the seat which was limited in height. Was impressed and disappointed with this place.

We saw Harris's Hawks, Coyote tracks, Turkey Vulchers, Groove-billed Anis, Blue winged Mexican Butterfly and many other critters. Then, we took a self guided bike ride. It was excellent. Stayed til about noon when it got really hot. Will definitely go back!

Clean well kept state park. Easy access for those physically challenged I would say 75 percent of birds we saw were within a 100 yards. Around the parking lot or near the bird blind directly behind the visitors center. All wheelchair accessible. The bird blind is well kept and unlike many other state parks in Texas had food and water out at 3 to 5 pm. Only knock right now is there is no water the resaca is dry so less birds then I would expect but this year all along the rio grande we are seeing this.

The Children's Museum of Brownsville offers a variety of interactive play areas and camps for children to explore different themes such as art, health, the ocean, dance, farming, construction and more. Kids can engage in hands-on activities that are both educational and fun. The museum provides an opportunity for children to learn about various topics in a playful environment while also fostering their creativity and imagination.
Cute little Childrens museum, appropriately priced $10 tickets for the size and activities available. There's a lot of make believe play areas like dr, dentist, grocery, house, boat areas. There's not a lot of museum "exhibits" definitely all hands on and designed for younger kids. No wifi available and cell reception is very iffy here. Some benches are around for parents to sit and they do a daily craft like coloring at specific times. Overall a good way to spend a couple of hours with little kids on a rainy day. It is next to a large outdoor park and playground facility so your kids could do both and really make a day of it.

There was just so many things to entertain the kids, it was also very educational, hands-on, just a bunch of happy and smiling faces. As you will see from the pictures and videos, they were two separate children’s museums, and a park, and a beautiful view of the lake. I always go to get my vegetables and spend no more than $15 and have enough to last me all week and more. The only complaint I have is the parking by the exit. It is full of holes and mud (when it rains). You need a truck or Suv to get parking. It's ridiculous how they just don't level the parking area there.
The Stillman House Museum, built in the 1850s by the city founder, is a charming historical site that showcases period furnishings and local history artifacts. Visitors can explore exhibits featuring fascinating glimpses into the region's past and browse through the gift shop. The kitchen and garden areas are particularly noteworthy for their unique features such as fruit trees, while other rooms including an outdoor restroom offer visitors insight into daily life during this era.
We didn't really know what to expect from this small museum but truly enjoyed it. Staff was very friendly and informative. The entrance was $6. The Sunrise Mall offers a diverse range of retailers, dining options, and entertainment venues, including a movie theater. Despite minor issues with the cleanliness of the floors and restrooms, visitors generally appreciate the mall's food court and snack vendors. The mall is also reminisced by some as a childhood memory where they enjoyed playing on colored tiles and buying balloons.
The food court inside Sunrise Mall has a variety of choices for a bite to eat. The choices range from BBQ, pasta, cheesesteaks, Chinese food, chicken sandwiches amongst a few more choices. A good place.to come when you.and another family member have a craving for something different.

Nice place, many different stores. Also 5 stars for the security staff. They were so helpful and kind, since they were able to find my wife's phone that she lost there.

This mall is still very much alive. I found multiple stores to at least browse in. Was especially impressed with Box Lunch and the Comic Cave.

It's a really good mall in my opnion. It just needs a bit of cleaning on the floors and restrooms, but over all I love all the food areas and snacks.I remembered when I was a kid,I used to jump on each different colored tile and buy a ballon before we left.I still go there today.I was like a memory to me when I was a kid😄🤗

Awesome food court and it has the only Luby's left in town. Beautiful carousel. Needs more stores but it has a nice Dillard's and JC Penny. The new Main Event means I don't have to drive my kids to Pharr anymore.

My husband and I are down from the Twin cities area and were expressed by how clean and busy it was. Loved to see all the families enjoying a Sunday afternoon, the malls in our area are dying out, reminding us how things were years ago.

Amazing mall and so much stores. Lots of available parking close to entrances. Clean interior/exterior with beautiful palm trees. Food court was excellent with multiple amazing restaurants. Came from Dallas to vaca out in the South and came to visit this amazing mall. 5 stars.

Love going to the mall has many options to go to as well the food court, and my favorite part is when you have the little ride by the food court

Parking is free! That's a big plus ➕️. There is plenty of parking, though the mall was busy! There are different stores and boutiques than the La Plaza Mall in McAllen! Different stores mean different clothing styles. Some stores had items on sale, and that's definitely a bonus. I was very happy with the items I bought!

So far I love this mall and they actually have new stuff like the main event and new restaurants! Bonus: free parking all around the mall! Only downside is that there is no Apple Store but I hope Brownsville keeps upgrading and growing(:

The Historic Brownsville Museum is an event venue and museum located in a train depot with Spanish-colonial revival architecture. The museum features displays showcasing the history of the Mexican War for the Control of Texas, antique furniture, bronze statues, and train memorabilia including an old locomotive. Although some areas of the depot are currently unused due to pandemic restrictions, visitors can still learn about the town's beginnings through civil war artifacts on display.
Not very full of artifacts. The receptionist seemed surprised to see anyone walk in. She asked what we needed. To which I replayed to visit the museum. She didn’t direct us in anyway. We found the train section completely on our own, I’m not sure we even got to see everything, there might have been sections we missed just because not everything is the same room. The train section is in another building. They need to hire friendly helpful people who love history and engage with visitors.

The Camille Lightner Playhouse, a performing arts theater, proves to be an exceptional venue for various shows. The theater offers an enjoyable experience with accessible seating and concessions. The talented cast and amazing actors deliver outstanding performances in productions like Beauty and the Beast, Lucky Stiff, Jekyll and Hyde, and Finding Nemo. Additionally, the presence of a wonderful orchestra enhances the quality of the shows. This local theater in Brownsville showcases an impressive display of talent that is definitely worth experiencing firsthand.
What a Beautiful community playhouse!! This was our first time and we weren’t sure what to expect! But the show was Fantastic! And the people that participate in running it are kind and welcoming, and genuinely love the theatre. We took our 3 daughters (7, 8, and 10) and they loved it too! We will definitely be back!

The actual small path and Palmito Ranch itself can be found off a dirt road prior to this roadside memorial, as mentioned in other reviews. The memorial is pleasant and features a welcoming sign for Boca Chica State Park. It holds significance as a historical site, although it may not warrant a specific visit solely for the monument. However, it is recommended to make a stop here while driving towards Boca Chica Beach.
The drive over from Brownsville city limits to Palmito is very Scenic Displaying South Texas Nature, untouched beauty and local wildlife animal/Birds Etc it is also en route to space x.Once at the Battle site you can get off your car and Explore the Historical site and read the bulletins for yourself to find out what really happened here at the historical site
T Ramz — Google review
The actual small trail and palmito ranch itself are located off a dirt road before this roadside monument as noted by some other reviews. The roadside monument itself is nice and has a good welcome sign to boca chica stat park. Good piece of history, not worth going specifically just for the monument but I recommend stopping here when driving to boca chica beach
Ulyses Yakovlevich — Google review
I just happened to be going to Boca chica and there was a scheduled launch. I couldn't just go to the beach so this was a good
place to stop and watch.

I really enjoyed coming here and was happy to see and read the historical markers. I think a good addition would be a kiosk with interpretive maps or NPS/ state park brochures detailing the battle. A must see if you're interested in US history.

Roadside pull-off with several info panels.
Marcus Lodwick — Google review
It's cool for what it's worth. It's not more more than a roadside monument. But it's nice that its there. The drive to Boca Chica has quite a few roadside stops associated with this era. It's cool to see this little known battle memorialized.
K.K. Porter (K Porter) — Google review
First of all, Google maps has the location wrong and there's not much to see but the history behind the battle is interesting. When you turn off the highway to go to the "monument" it's actually just a 100 yards or so on the right. There is a little lot you turn into and it has a few markers to read. Lots of markers along the highway going out to the beach on 4. Also out that way is a SpaceX facility where they launch rockets from time to time. You can also go to the end of 4, take a right at the beach and drive down to where the Rio Grande feeds into the gulf. And across the river is Mexico. No border wall, no fence, etc. It's really cool to see. Not sure if you could make it with a 2WD vehicle, would just depend on conditions. The coast line is very different than the rest of Padre island IMHO.
Tammy Meadors — Google review
There's not a lot to see here other than the signs posted. Now, with SpaceX restricting access on certain days, they have been a hindrance to the park exploration. It's sad that the park and beaches and residents are being slowly consumed by SpaceX.
The city park, Joe & Tony Oliveira Park, is in need of significant maintenance. The curbs by the kickball fields are filled with leaves, and palm branches accumulate on a daily basis without being picked up. Although the park is frequently crowded in the afternoons and evenings, it was cleaned up at some point. However, new nets for the tennis court are still required. Despite these issues, it remains a suitable place to go for a walk.
Rocko be loving it! Helps when one doesn't have a yard to call there own.
Googly Eyes — Google review
A well-loved park with playgrounds, baseball diamond, soccer field, swimming pool, a skateboard park, and an adjacent paved walking/biking path. Reserving a star because I couldn’t find public restrooms, and there was lots of litter and full trash bins. Otherwise, a great place enjoyed by people of all ages. If you’re lucky, you’ll see the parrots come through before dusk near the middle of the park and the skate park.
Julia Daily — Google review
Curbs by the kickball fields are full of leaves. Palm branches fall daily, but they are not picked up. The park is full most afternoons and evenings.
The park had been cleaned up. New nets for the tennis court ate still needed.
The park is still a good place to walk. However, it needs major maintenance. Piles of debris and brancheshave been by big trash bins for weeks. Curbs are full.of leaves, and trash receptacles are full. The sidewalk to the new walking trail is obstructed by a tree. The branches need to be trimmed or someone is going to get scratched.
Walk the dog every day...just wished they had a dog park so you could let the dog loose. Plenty of space to put one up.
Joel Ruiz — Google review
This is a great place to watch the parrots come in to roost for the night. We saw over 100 parrots fly in from Mexico. They fly in right before sundown (around 7pm and 730pm.)

Great park that has been here decades. The latest addition was the skate park that replaced the basketball courts, there are plenty of ramps and features for skateboarders. There are several leagues for different age groups for soccer, baseball and softball. The park definitely comes alive after 6pm.
Iram Lerma — Google review
We came to see the parrots roost for the evening and could not believe how much trash there was around the park. The trash bins were full and there is nowhere for recycling. Lots and lots of water bottles laying everywhere. It is a nice park with a lot of kids playing.

Great playground and what makes it even better is that the playground os wheelchair accessable! My son and daughter love this park. The only drawback is that of you go during the day you may have high schoolers skipping classes from Pace HS speaking nothing but profanities.
Crystal Esquivel — Google review
Love this park. I live very close and have been going there for many years now with my family and have had many party's too. The reason I gave it 4 stars is because it doesn't have water fountains and it would be nice of it did but, aside from that it is a great park. Totally recommended.

I am so glad we visited the Museum. It is small, and does not take long to see everything, however I really enjoyed the exhibits. A visit to CrepeTown which is housed in the museum was great for lunch and a beverage. If you appreciate local art, please support the Museum. We walked to the museum from the bus station, which was about a mile each way.
Stephanie Gingerich — Google review
I’ve come to visit this museum two times now on different occasions and both times it stated on the website and online that it would be open for visitors, this however was not the case. We came spring of 2023 and spring of 2024 and the same situation happened to us, they told us on both occasions “sorry we’re closed due to an exhibition installation”. The lack of clarity online is what is most frustrating aside from the fact that we’re visiting from 18 hours away. It’s disappointing to see that we couldn’t even check out any sort of art piece while visiting and were asked to leave. Until the hours posted online are accurately portrayed, we will not be returning to this Art Museum. Please reflect accurate hours of operation, which should include when the museum will be closed to due installations.

This building is just beautiful inside and out. It is very evident that it is well cared for. The price per person to enter is not bad at all. Only complaint would be I would consider this to be more of an art exhibition than a museum. As it features local artists and changes the items frequently. It is also very small inside as only had two rooms with art besides the grand hall when you enter. There was not much art on display to view either. I would say it took under 30 mins even taking photos to see everything on display. If you are in the area it is worth checking out but keep in mind what you are getting. Perfect to hit before or after the zoo.

So sad to enter my hometown museum to view my daughter’s art piece in the fine arts exhibition, to only be closed out due to a private baby shower event. Not even notified or mentioned in the website of such change. The Brownsville museum should have honored its exhibition opening hours to the community of the town’s talented artists and shouldn’t DECLINE for the artist, herself, to see her artwork be displayed!!!! Never will my daughter exhibit her art pieces in this museum again. 😢

It's a small town museum and reflects that spirit. It is primarily 4 galleries and on the day we visited hosted a main exhibition by a national artist held in 2 galleries and in the ancillary wings, there was a group exhibition of local talents and a solo by a regional artist. Honestly wasn't expecting the Menil but assumed that the lights would of been turned on to view the paintings. Overall a cute and raw fine arts haven.

Centrally located in downtown Brownsville (Mitte Plaza) the museum provides permanent collections and visiting artist exhibits. There is a restaurant within and a gift shop. On Weekdays-talented, local artists can be seen in action. If your going to the Gladys Porter zoo- it is across the street!

Also take a class with Alexandra Zertuche, local artist. You would not regret!

The artist exhibit was grand. His life's work was amazing.
The permanent collection was more like a collection of art found at a high end vintage shop. It's nice, but not what I typically associate with museum quality.
Maybe the Brownsville elite have more urgent interests to invest in rather than art?
Anyway. I am glad I went. The crepe shop was delicious.
The Costumes of the Americas Museum showcases a diverse array of traditional clothing styles from indigenous cultures across North, Central, and South America as well as the Caribbean. The exhibits feature stunning examples of Plains tribes and Southeastern attire among other cultural representations. The museum offers an excellent opportunity to explore history with children while learning about the rich traditions and customs of western hemisphere cultures. Admission is free along with Children's Museum admission and every Sunday.
This is a delightful and educational experience in The RGV. The exhibit rotates so there are probably three or four different exhibits every year. This exhibit featured clothes and costumes from the Estados en Mexico.
The docent was very knowledgeable and was able to converse in English and Spanish.

I enjoyed looking at the costumes and thinking about what it was like at the time when the owners were wearing them. I spoke with the attendant and she mentioned how careful they have to be to keep these dresses and outfits from deteriorating. She mentioned the other countries and time periods they have in storage and how they rotate every so often. I plan to go back when those are displayed too. It's a small museum, but very interesting indeed.

With the Help of Felix Espinoza, one of the associates behind the desk... this man has a passion for his job, the kind of passion that's rare to find in today's quick paced world. He knows the in's and out's of the entire Rio Grande Valley better than anyone we've known. Whatever your likings, this gentleman has a destination for you to visit. You've already been there? Not a problem, he'll point you into the right direction and give you some spots that you didn't even know where there! This gentleman is a true ambassador of our beloved home and rich culture.
