Cave Creek Regional Park is a park located in the Phoenix metropolitan area with an elevation that varies between 2,000 and 3,000 feet. The nature within this park offers fresh air and exercise for those looking to enjoy it. There are trails that wind through the landscape and there is also a campground available where you can connect with nature and the great outdoors.
All of the Camp Hosts have been amazing. It’s a nice quiet park. They hosts do a great job cleaning up camp sites, bathrooms, and collecting the trash. Love seeing them at the gates and their wonderful smiles. They make the experience of the regional parks unique. Wish there was an on site laundry, it’d make life so much easier for regular campers. Kudos for doing it right!

Cave Creek Regional Park has quickly become one of our absolute favorite outdoor destinations in the northern region. Spanning a vast expanse, this park offers an impressive variety of trails suitable for all skill levels, ranging from leisurely strolls to challenging treks. Whether you're an avid hiker, mountain biker, or trail runner, this park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts.
Open year-round, the park's natural beauty captivates visitors in every season. One of our personal favorites is the Go John Trail, which meanders through the rugged and awe-inspiring Sonoran Desert. Along the way, you'll encounter numerous scenic vistas that beckon you to pause and soak in the breathtaking desert landscape.
The pinnacle of the trail, the summit, offers a rewarding conclusion to your journey. As you reach the peak, you're greeted with panoramic views that stretch across the expansive desert, serving as a majestic reminder of nature's grandeur. It's a truly unforgettable experience that makes every step of the hike worthwhile.

Lovely park, well organized and clean. Excellently and friendly managed. Great trails in direct reach, and not too far from Phoenix.

Trail and maps were well marked. Good parking and water station at the trail entrance. We took 2.4 hours to complete a trail estimated at 2-2.2 hours since we stopped for pictures a few times.
I recommend going when it’s 55-85F since there is no shade when it gets hotter.

$7 to enter the park, but worth every penny. The gate attendant gave me a detailed, useful, and informative map of the park printed on both sides of a regular piece of printer paper. Lots of paved parking at the trailhead. Fantastic bathrooms with flushing toilets, real sinks with soap, electric hand dryers, and electric lighting at the trailhead. The men's room I used was very clean and smelled like cleaning products at 4pm on a Sunday afternoon. There are very nice picnic areas if you want to sit and eat something before or after your hike. The trails I went on were very well maintained, very well marked, and not at all overgrown. There was no litter anywhere that I saw. I think the $7 pay wall may keep away some of rif raf that likes to leave toilet paper and food wrappers on the trail (you know who you are) and generally keeps the parking and trails from getting overcrowded. You can easily navigate around all the trails in the park with just the map they give you and the trail signs. I didn't see anywhere that the trail became feint, no way finding skills required. The particular hike I did was a nice back and forth mix of uphill and downhill. A large part of the trail was fairly smooth, not very rocky and not a lot of high steps. There were a few rocky spots on the north side of the loop, but even those were pretty mild. I would classify this as pretty easy hike if the distance fine for you. Huge shout out to the people who manage and work at the park! They're doing a great job and clearly care about their work.

Great hike. Plenty of nature. Saw a rattle snake on trail. Neat rocks. Don't take them home. You can see old mines from the trails. Nice information center.

Love this place. For a campground not far out of town you wouldn't know it. very quiet and peaceful desert park. The sites are huge and extremely clean. The volunteers and staff do a wonderful job of keeping it pristine. We especially liked how the volunteer Marv, raked the sites making them look like a Japanese Zen garden. There are a few really nice hiking trails in this park as well you should check out

We booked their facilities as the venue for our wedding and the experience was beyond incredible. They were extremely courteous, and made sure our process was smooth and hassle free. They ensured the areas were clean and all the utilities were in working order. Their customer service was top tier and they were able to easily answers all of our questions. Candy was one of the coordinators assisting us and she was incredible, ensured the process was smooth and really helped to take care of our needs. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to have a magical wedding experience in the beautiful Arizona desert.

We started out on the Slate trail and tested our longevity on the Go John but decided not to go too far, perhaps another day. The trails are well marked, very debris free and clearly far from any trees, saguaro or other plants which is safer. We like this park, nice camping spaces and the visitor center very nicely maintained, very friendly Staff!! Restrooms are close to the trailheads and one at the visitor center. Picnic tables throughout the park and benches are at different locations on trails to sit and enjoy the view!!

Great spot for a family weekend picnic. We bring snacks and games and hang out under the Ramada at the playground. The playground has fun desert theming and the restroom is right there as well. You've got beautiful desert views and can watch the trail riders go by. Also we always love checking out the shop and a few creatures inside. Can't wait for kids to be old enough for a trail ride here. There is an entrance fee per car to enter the park

Nice trails, restrooms and a fun desert themed playground. My kids enjoyed watching the horseback riders pass by. There is fee to enter as it's a Maricopa County Park. Go John and Overton trail was perfect for my kids.
This trail is one of the best trails you must do if you are in Cave Creek/Carefree area. I love the view from the top! I am not a pro hiker, so it was a little challenging for me due to the heat and quick elevation gain, but I was able to do it! We had our little ones (10, 8 and 6 years old)and they were able to do it without any issues. They had more fun than sitting and playing video games -yes, they said it! If this is your first time and you are not familiar with this kind of landscape, bring lots of water, a little tweezer, sanitizing wipes and band-aid (in case you step on or touch a cactus like we did). Black Mountain gains elevation quickly, so you can find yourself climbing up pretty fast. Bring lots of water though because it gets really hot in the summer months. You should be able to see other hikers going up or down with you time to time which is a good thing in case anything happens. I just wish that we could leave the mountain as itself without building multi million dollar homes where people buy and leave it vacant for many months. Some places should be left as is in my opinion.
The Cave Creek Museum is a local history museum in Cave Creek, Arizona that has collections related to the area's mining and natural resources history. The museum also features exhibits on local art and archeology.
Museum itself was closed, however these photos are outside and visible year around. Love Cave Creek!

A very small, but enjoyable museum about the history of Cave Creek. The attendants at the front desk were very polite and welcoming when we arrived. It is divided into two wings and an outside area with some mining equipment, a tuberculosis cabin, and a chapel. I especially liked all the information I could learn about the different Native American tribes, and the history of the mining that went on in the 1800s and early 1900s in Cave Creek. I took off one star just due to the size since it would be hard to spend over an hour here, however, I do recommend it for any fan of history, museums, or anyone who is interested in anything to do about Arizona or it’s heritage. $10 for adults and $8 for seniors to enter.
Zan Lee — Google review
Seeing no obvious marked parking and just enough room for about 3 cars, I called the museum and they say you can park in the church parking lot next door (as long they don't have church service at that time).
Also, check what days and hours the museum is open before going. Hours are quite limited and some days it's not open at all.
The museum is on the smaller side and I could be done in about 1 hour if mostly looking, not so much reading.
But if you read mostly everything, you can be there for a couple of hours.
It has about 3 rooms and there's also stuff to see outside including a house, a church, mining machinery, etc.
There's a table where every 'food' item is made of different kinds of stone which you can see on the 'menu'.
Enjoy!

This was a great museum to see a lot of Native American artifacts. They have a huge display of pottery amongst other things the natives used in the area of Cave Creek and Carefree. They have a really neat mill and if you make and get reservations you can see them fire it up and crush rock and learn how they used to get gold. It was a pretty neat guided tour and informative. The people that work at the museum are all volunteers and have a passion to tech and show you how things were many years back. We live in the area and it was very cool to see the operations and all of the displays.
Brian McQuistion — Google review
What a gem! For a smaller town, this museum packs a variety of historic nuggets into the exhibits and the grounds. We attended the Gold Stamp Mine Experience, and visited the rest of the museum after our Gold mining tour. We were very impressed with the guide who shared everything from the process to the hard life miners endured. Watching the stamp mill rumble to life was a treat. The Gold Mine Experience is only offered on certain weekends and you will want to buy tickets ahead of time.

So much history here. I had no idea what stamping. Gordon Lightfoot’s song, Carefree Highway, it is also on the cover album. From miners, ranching, dude ranching, American legion’s, rodeos there is a lot to do in this area. Don’t forget to check out the original historic, first church, the gold panning exhibit, and the tubercular cabin. Craft day, I got to make a turkey and a beaded ear of corn, lol. Loved it.

In the early settlement period, when the population was small, the library was mobile and situated in various locations. Nowadays, Desert Foothills Library boasts an impressive collection of books that cater to both fiction and regional history enthusiasts. The library hosts a variety of events year-round for all age groups and interests. In addition to its fantastic children's section, the library has pleasant outdoor areas like fountains, trails, and fireplaces.
Pretty library, best I’ve been to in Arizona. It’s always quiet when I’m here, I’ve never encountered the screaming children that other people have noted in the reviews. The folks at the front desk are very nice and helpful. Plenty of parking, with a new covered garage to avoid the Arizona sun beating down on your car. No homeless people- The Phoenix Library downtown smelled like urine and sweat the only time I was there. (I feel sorry for the volunteers that have to put up with this). Generally a pretty good selection of books. I usually place books on hold for pickup, but there are no books published in the current year yet. (April 2024).

This library is either a one-star or five-star library depending on what you are looking for. If you want a pretty library, in a picturesque setting, where you can do some causal reading, and if a fair amount of background noise doesn't bother you- this library is perfect for you. However, if you are looking for a quiet place to study, read, or get some work done- this is not the library for you.
This is especially true if you cannot get one of the two available quiet study rooms, which are available on a first-come, first-serve basis in two-hour time slots or by reservation for $10/hour (though I do not recommend the latter option since they are usually not occupied).
The ladies at the front desk, though extremely nice and friendly, never stop talking and one of the days I was there, the library turned into a day care center for a bunch of screaming young children. I was here to study for law school exams, and I only studied here because it was the most convenient option. If you have a more quiet option and prefer silence, I highly recommend taking it.
There is a nice side patio that has nice tables and is usually quiet, but it doesn't have outlets, so if you plan on using a laptop out there, make sure it is charged. There also is a nice bookstore that people seem to like, though I have no personal experience using it. Coffee is also available at the front desk for $1 a cup, but make sure you have cash if you plan on purchasing.
In sum, it wouldn't be fair to give this library a high or low rating, as your opinion of it will depend on what you want from a library.
If the people running the library read this, I highly recommend getting rid of the day care activities (I don't expect kids to be quiet all of the time, but it doesn't make much sense to run a day care center out of a library either, as libraries are generally places where people go to quietly read). I would also try to keep employee conversation at the front desk at a minimum (this is a small facility and any normal volume conversation can be heard throughout the library).

I left work early to make the appointment as we have international travel in two weeks and need this passport ASAP. When I arrived for my appointment nobody acted like they knew what I was even talking about and then told me they only do tax services?? Wasted my precious time I need to be able to make my trip.

This is the best library locally in Cave Creek. I love their movie selection. It is so quiet and serene and has some nice views while reading near the large picture windows. Clean, updated, and a warm feeling that I enjoy each time I step foot in this library. The staff is always helpful and cordial.
Jane Weissner — Google review
Having a central location the library is easy to reach. They offer free hour-long guided tours of the facility at 11.00 AM and 2 pm. So it's reasonable to plan your visit so that you are there just in time for either of these. The tours are guided in a very friendly manner by one of the retired but still very dedicated staff members and they can grant you a 10% discount if you buy something in the library shop after the tour. The fact that one of the participants of our tour was on a wheelchair pulled by her husband attests to the wheelchair accessibility of the building, which is itself a masterpiece of architecture. I'd also advise to plan some time to browse the library on your own after the tour. I only found a small snack bar in the entrance hall. For those willing to lunch on something more substantial one of the options is Bryant Park behind the library.
Frontier Town is a tourist attraction that recreates an Old West town and features actors dressed in period costumes, as well as shops and restaurants. It's a fun spot to take your visiting family members or for a day trip. The layout of the town isn't very large, but it offers an assortment of shops and attractions, such as the candle shop. Visitors can also have their wedding here.
This little historic tourist town in Cave Creek, Az is a true step back in time. With or without the fun southwestern metal yard decorations and clothes that are for sale, the old buildings and sidewalks lend to an authentic old frontier feel. The church is precious. A quick visit is a must when visiting Cave Creek.

We happened upon this place after eating at the Grotto Cafe (which I recommend). Cute little shops. Not a huge selection, but you can definitely spend 30 minutes or more poking around. The best part was the western reenactment! It was very well done!! I have no idea if the actors are paid, but it was a welcomed surprise and totally free. There are some cute picture opportunities here and there is a gravel lot on the same side of the street beside it that make access super easy. I did notice that places had wheelchair ramps as well.

Excellent, well organized workshop with April Bower.
My only complaint is not even the fault of the center. The stagecoach place where the Center was located is not very well organized. There are maps, but there's no spot on the map that says, " You are here", and the buildings on the map are numbered, but I could not find numbers on the actual buildings. I had to call the workshop host and get her to help me find the place.

Spur Cross Ranch Conservation is a vast expanse of desert land spanning 2,154 acres. It boasts numerous hiking and equestrian trails that allow visitors to explore the area's picturesque scenery while enjoying activities such as picnicking and wildlife watching. While the terrain may be moderate, it offers sufficient exercise for those who wish to take in the natural beauty of wildflowers and large saguaros that are in bloom throughout the park.
Wow! I didn’t even know this trail existed until a friend took me here for a hike. The level of intensity was mild- hardly any incline. We did a 5 mile loop and it was invigorating. Yes- wear Trail shoes or hiking boots. Take plenty of water. And- this park also has horseback riding for a fee. It was $3 per person to enter the park! On a gorgeous Saturday- the trail wasn’t too busy! Awesome to take a break in nature. There are plenty of benches on the trail with magnificent views. 5 Stars.

We did the shorter loop hike. Really great. A little rocky at times but definitely an easy hike. Saw a few cacti in bloom. 4 porta potties before your start, just in case. There's a $3 per Person park entrance fee that's payable after you park.

There are unimproved trails of various ease and difficulty, also ALWAYS bring water and use common sense.
The trails provide a look into the past, as well as a view of so many beautiful cacti, including Cholla, Prickly Pear, Barrel and of course Saguaro. The gently flowing Cave creek is something you don't expect to see in the desert.
Hiking here is definitely worth it.

Great little area for hiking. Moderate enough that both my kids were able to do it with little to no complaining and just long enough that I felt like I got some decent exercise. Gorgeous scenery. Wild flowers in bloom, large saguaro. Not a ton of shade, so bring lots of water (this is true of almost all Arizona trails. A couple of little park benches to sit on at various points, which was nice.
Only drawback - where we exited, we had to hike by a horse/trail ride facility and the smell was absolutely horrendous. That may have been our fault for leaving from the incorrect location, but it was pretty gross, and there was runoff waste in the roadway. Didn't make for a pleasant path back to the car.

This is a great hike! In the winter, Cave Creek actually has water in it. Hike is very easy going and there are a couple of loops to choose from. Pets are allowed, just pick up after them. The kids all had a great time. This is a terrific spot nearby that everyone in the family can enjoy. There's horse riding available. I didn't get the prices, but lots of people were doing it. I think they were using horses on the Elephant trail, which is one that goes into the mountains that is not maintained.
I had a great time. It's a fun and relaxing walk with amazing sunsets. Right now in the winter time it's not too hot. It's a perfect time to take everyone in the family out for a nice walk. I would choose this over other trails because it's great for the novice hiker.

A very easy, scenic hike. We did the Fairy Duster Trail which was a quick loop. Very scenic views of the wash and mountains, and endless saguaro cacti. Trail had many small, loose rocks and some erosion from rains but neither posed an issue. Would recommend this place for a fun hike!
Dragonfly trail at Jewel of the Creek at Spur Cross Ranch is a perfect trail for kids and dogs. Not much elevation change and multiple trails to make a short or long hike. And wow....those Saguaros! It's a 2 mile loop that probably normally takes about 1 hour but we have Arizona children and dogs so they want to play in water for hours! We've taken beautiful family Christmas photos here as well

About 3 miles for the full Dragonfly loop where you intersect water 3 or 4 times.

It's free. Please pick up after your dogs and use a leash if you bring them.

This is a very easy trail, perfect for all family members young and old. I can't imagine hiking this during the summer as there are very little opportunities for shade. I hiked this trail in late November. I did catch a few trees changing color and the weather was perfect. A couple of people on the trail said this place is particularly nice after a rainfall. I will have to update this review as soon as I can catch some rain in this area. There is a $3 fee for the trail, no credit cards accepted. There is an envelope for you to put into a safety box.

My two daughters and I enjoyed this hike into a shaded area with lots of vegetation and Cottonwoods. 50 minutes drive from Central Phoenix, near Cave Creek. The last 4 - 5 minutes of the drive is on a dirt/gravel road. The Jewel of the Creek parking area is small but free. A little further down is the much larger parking area for Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area. There is a $3 per person fee at that parking area, though seems to be the base for a lot of trails around Elephant Mountain. We'll definitely head back to explore more.

We love this easy 1+ low impact hike. Since there were recent rIn/snow, the wash had a nice amount of water in it. This hike has a nice mix of sun and shade. Tons of saguaro, mostly flat path, some rocks, slight incline. If you park at the first lot and enter, no fee. If you continue down the road and park at the other entrance, they do ask for a donation. There are multiple path options, all good for all levels of hiking.

This was a beautiful park. It's supposed to have a creek but I guess it was still dry season. There were a lot of amazing sights from the mountain ranges to the plant and wildlife. There are many saguaro cactus. When on a trail remember to always watch your step in case snakes and other things that can hurt you. One of the cactus if you lightyear touch will break off and is hard to get off. Other then that it is a nice hike.

We walked away with some original jewelry after talking with the actual artist. For a chance to get out of the sun and open up to great artistry check I would suggest checking them out.

Just WOW!! When I heard about this gallery in Cave Creek, I wasn’t sure what to expect. There’s so much great art in this contemporary gallery! The staff told me that all the artists are local and that they take turns to assist the owners, which is why there weren’t any stuffy or high pressure sales people. They had acrylics, oils, pastels, graphite, glass, ceramic, assemblage and of course jewelry! It’s next to famous Big Earl’s restaurant and you can park in the back. I’ll be back for sure!

Over 50 artists are featured here. Plenty of one-of-a-kind pieces In everyone’s price range.
Had a vodka flight and a bourbon while my family enjoyed a charcuterie board. Everything was delightful. My daughter said her Shirley Temple was the best she’d ever had. We’ll be back.

Amazing selection of bourbon and vodka! Cocktails were incredible and such a cool town outside of Phoenix proper. Bar tenders were extremely knowledgeable and made excellent drinks! 10/10 will return! Took home a bunch as well!

LOVE this spot! Make their bitters, liqueurs and mixers are made in house. Ask for the devilishly handsome bartender 😈

We got a flight of the vodka and tried the bourbon. Everything we tried was awesome, it is a bit of a drive but if you’re already in the neighborhood it’s a must.

Here for hubby who likes whiskey, bourbon, etc. I'm a beer girl normally, so asked for a recommendation. Orange Blossom caught my eye and the bartender's recommendation offered the same. It is very good. Savory, not sweet. Highly recommend.

We loved our experience. We got the Cold Brew Old Fashioned and the Prickly Peach. Both were delicious! The service was excellent. The ambience and crowd was great as well. Will be stopping here again next time we're in town!

Absolutely wonderful. Cute little distillery on a walkable stretch of little gems in Cave Creek. Only thing that would have been better is if they had gin. But I just love gin. We loved their apple and ginger vodka and their whiskey was very impressive and incredibly smooth for a younger whiskey. The cocktails were well executed and thought out. Highly recommend stopping here if you are in the area.

Incredible cocktails!!! The service was fantastic and the cheese board was delicious! Great outdoor seating as well. Can’t wait to come back . Our server and bartender, Tex, was knowledgeable and friendly.
Miguel has 2 shops in Cave Creek with so many fun donkey paintings and desert scenes. He gave us a discount, signed our paintings and made our experience memorable. If you are looking for quality artwork for your walls, go see Miguel!

We bought a new home in the arear (Arizona) and was in search of art from locals. After research I found a few but was drawn to Miguel Camarena. While in Cave Creek my wife and I stopped by his studio where he was more than happy to talk with us and educate us on art. He was very friendly and interesting. I personally could have spent the entire afternoon just chatting to him. We ended up buying 2 pieces and will be back for more!

Miguel was nothing short of fantastic while looking through his gallery. His work displays not only his passion for his art, but also the depths of Arizona’s personality. Would highly recommend!

I kept passing his store laughing at his donkey picture. Finally my friend said let's go see the donkey maker. Miguel is an amazing painter and I could buy so many of his pictures. I have his business card so hopefully the business I'm wanting to start he can paint me some pictures. Stop in and see him if you are ever in Cave Creek, Arizona

Had such a great experience meeting the artists and buying from them! We found a piece at the Crave Creak art show and fell in love, and we were able to go to the gallery, meet Miguel, and walk out of there with it!

Beautiful art, words cannot express how gorgeous it is. I’m so in love with my cactus flower and donkey, I just can’t help but smile every time I see them. Miguel and his family are incredibly kind and went above and beyond in helping me find a piece that I adore. I recommend his gallery to everyone!

We’ve always admired the bright artworks hanging in front of the gallery from our regular seat at the bourbon bar across the street from the gallery and decided we needed a print of “Happy Hour Donkeys” for the hallway into our dining room. We’re so glad we stopped in to the gallery instead of ordering online. Miguel made the process informative and fun and we got exactly the size we needed—though we appreciated his kind offer for us to return and swap if needed.
Beautiful building, amazing music especially the vocals and really felt like family when I visited.

Light of the Desert is a wonderful, welcoming church! I worshipped here for the last two Sundays and I already feel like I’m part of the family!
The worship team is great and both Pastors had comforting and encouraging messages.

We looked at a number of churches after moving here from Wisconsin and after attending a few services at Light of Desert we knew this would be our new church home. Everyone is very nice and welcoming :)
