Cape Sōya, located in the northernmost point of Japan, is a windswept monument with breathtaking views of the sea. The area is rich in history, dating back to the early 1900s and is home to numerous memorials and statues that symbolize Japan's desire for world peace. Atop the hill overlooking the ocean lies a popular ramen shop. The landmark features free parking and offers stunning views without being too crowded.
Very fascinating and interesting place. We couldn't see Russia because of the weather, but I really enjoyed it. The drive along the coast is beautiful. I recommend visiting, but not during a blizzard!

The view was beautiful, albeit very windy! Although it was July, I was chilly! There is a public restroom at this location, and what appear to be souvenir shops and restaurants nearby. The monument it pretty cool, looks like it lights up at night. We went to the park just up the hill to see some additional monuments as well.

I wore a 550 filled down and was not warm. The wind chill makes this place a lot colder than it is. On a clear day you can see Russia!
The wakkanai bus day pass can be used to get to this location. Unfortunately the bus isn't very frequent do be mindful.
The bathrooms work ( flushing kind/ western) but the water from the sink is cold. There is no hand dryer as well.

This was the first time we were able to go to the Northern capes in Hokkaido, and because it's the pandemic but are still allowed to travel, we decided to go and target outdoor activities. Soya Cape has plenty of memorials and has a very long history dating back to the 1900s, when the world was still very chaotic, so the memorials and statues in the cape represent the desire of the Japanese for world peace.
At the top of the hill overlooking the ocean is a ramen shop, but there were a lot of people so we didn't dare eat inside. But it looked like it was popular.

The northernmost point of Japan. Absolutely gorgeous. It's like going to the end of the world. best thing I have done on my honeymoon. We can see the Russian islands from here and the Ruban island too. Some monuments to see around. A walk to the lighthouse would be great. Fresh air and infinite peace. Just amazing.

Good place to visit but not much to see around the area. Not much restaurants as well. View from the top of the hill just before the marker was great. Would recommend to visit probably just once in your lifetime.

Cape Soya stands proudly as Japan's northernmost point, marked by an iconic monument that is arguably the most frequented landmark in Wakkanai City. Visitors often capture the moment with a photograph as a memento of their journey to this symbolic location.
Despite its popularity, the site tends to draw crowds. Yet, a noteworthy aspect of the experience is the admirable behavior of Japanese tourists, who demonstrate remarkable responsibility and etiquette by patiently queuing up after disembarking from their tour buses.
When the weather is clear, the panoramic view from Cape Soya extends across the sea, offering a glimpse of Sakhalin, Russia, adding an extra layer of intrigue to this already captivating destination.

Almost surreal. Stunning views, free parking, and wasn't crowded.

One of my most epic destination, many people have visited Japan however not everyone can say they came to the furthest north tip of it. Cape Soya has a wonderful lookout point by the beach and with a clear day, Russia could be seen on the opposite. Free parking is available too

The northernmost place in Japan. Very beautiful view but be aware of the strong wind. Some say you can see Russia (Sakhalin) from here but I didn’t. Perhaps the sky is not clean enough today.
I did a round trip from Sapporo within one day. Its doable but I do not recommend since you have to travel 12hours on train + bus combined just for the 40 min stay at Cape Sōya.
Real Perry-Kwok — Google review
Japan bucket list item. Layer up! It can get pretty cold and windy over here. Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate, and Sakhalin Island was hidden by a dense marine layer. It was still a great experience just being there.

It's one of those places that was on our itinerary for Hokkaido for a long while that we just didn't do yet. Despite staying in Asahikawa, we made the 3-4 hour trek round trip here in a single day and it was a cool place to check out! We went on a Monday and it was sort of crowded. We got there around 3 pm (1500). It was foggy and cloudy so we couldn't see Russia, but nonetheless we are happy we went. This time of year it also wasn't too cold. Just windy a bit. There is a couple shops with souvenirs nearby that were nice to check out also. It's one of those things that you would probably do once and not come back.

Important notice!! The buses run very infrequently, if you are coming from outside Wakkanai you will very likely only have an hour to enjoy Cape Soya before the last bus comes. Check the bus timetable and plan accordingly!
I was very fortunate that the weather was nice, I got to see Sakhalin from both Cape Soya and Wakkanai proper. Although it's quite busy, there are a number of monuments to take photos next to. There are gift shops and small resturants, vending machines and toilets for your convenience.
Myoofusai Inaba — Google review
One of the places you need to visit when you are in Hokkaido. Japan's northern most point.
The weather was perfect when we visited, with cold wind blowing. We could see Sakhalin island (Russia), 40km away.
There is a souvenir shop close by and 2 food restaurants on the other side of the road. Have lunch at the restaurant that serves Ramen, it was very good!
Other than the landmark, there is nothing else. Coming by your own transport would be more convenient as public transport is infrequent.

I always wanted to go to Cape Soya as it is the most northern part of Japan and to see Russia. Unfortunately, the day I visited Cape Soya, there was gale winds and it was cloudy.
I was able to stay at Cape Soya for only a few minutes as the gale winds were strong. Strong enough that you had to force yourself to walk. But, determined as I was, I did take a few pictures of this historic site.

The northernmost point of Japan. A simple monument marks the location. Lots of parking.
There is a small statuary and monument park on top of the hill opposite the Cape. Next to the lighthouse.
Wakkanai Park is a stunning location, situated on a hill beside the ocean and boasting a botanical garden, observatory tower and memorial statues. The drive up offers the chance to spot wild deer, while at the top visitors are treated to breathtaking 270-degree views. A monument dedicated to nine courageous women who lost their lives in World War II stands as a poignant reminder of sacrifice and bravery.
If you are lucky on the drive up you might see wild deer, when you get to the top the 270 degree views are spectacular, please stop and read the inscription on the monument dedicated to 9 ladies whom gave their lives during WW2, it’s a sad read but none the less I felt that by reading it paid homage to those very brave ladies.

Wakkanai Aquarium is a compact facility that focuses on cold-water species. Visitors can enjoy watching seal feeding sessions and penguin shows, as well as interact with various aquarium displays. The touch pool is also available for visitors to explore. In addition to the aquarium exhibits, there is an interesting museum featuring interactive apparatuses designed to teach children about marine life. The facility also includes an exhibition about Antarctic ice exploration and a 30-minute planetarium show that should not be missed.

The northernmost aquarium. I visited in early February during the winter season. Seals swimming through sherbet-like seawater is a sight unique to the northernmost aquarium. You can also see the feeding.
In addition, there is a migratory tank for the mythical fish Ito, and rare fish that live in extremely cold regions, such as Vero (family Sculpinidae), which may be found only here in Japan (?). Various innovations were also seen in the exhibition. Although the facility itself is not large, the compact and condensed exhibits are quite impressive and both parents and children had a lot of fun. I think it was better than I imagined and expected.
We also enjoyed the surrounding spots that were just a few minutes walk away. The Wakkariumu Youth Science Museum (admission with a common ticket), located right next door, also has a planetarium and exhibits unique to the northern countries, such as the Antarctic expedition team. The view of Rishiri Fuji from Cape Noshappu was also very impressive as it was illuminated by the setting sun.
To get there, rent a car near Wakkanai Station and drive for about 20 minutes on a snowy road. There are also public buses that leave from the station.
Please note that the museum will be closed for maintenance during the winter months of December and January. Also, please note that during the winter season (November, February, and March), the museum's opening hours are shorter (until 4:00 p.m.) when visiting.

I went to Cape Soya on a bike tour and I definitely wanted to go to this aquarium, so I entered it again. First, we bought some seal food at the ticket office, and as soon as we left, there were seals there and we fed them. It was moving to interact with the animals that live in Hokkaido. The small children also enjoyed the feeding experience. In the large panoramic aquarium, you can see a 1 meter long phantom fish swimming leisurely, making it a sight to behold. We also toured the attached science museum, where there was an exhibit of dog sleds from the Antarctic Showa Station, and the stuffed dogs were worth seeing. Feb. 8th, 2024: Neat structure with a design that resembles the inside of a whale, with each arc serving as a rib. My stop here was brief but worthwhile, and I met a local who was proud to share some commentary about the dome. Can’t say I understood much, but the smile on her face had me believe she loved it. ・A huge torii gate has been built in a place overlooking the North Breakwater Dome. The well-named Kitamon Shrine, which serves as a fortress that protects the northernmost region, is reached by climbing the stairs at the end of this approach.
・This shrine has a very atmospheric atmosphere, with a large sacred lantern on the side of the road, a stylish curved road, and a guardian dog in front of the stairs.
・If you look back while climbing the stairs, you can see the North Breakwater Dome. It's a nice place.
・There is a second torii gate next to the awarding place. The main shrine is also nearby. Please bow in front of the torii gate and worship.
・It's a somewhat stylish shrine building with bright colors. I happened to be able to capture a moment when there were no people around, but perhaps because it was a long weekend, there was a steady stream of people coming to visit the shrine.
・Below the U-shaped guardian dog, there is also a child guardian dog whose descendants prosper.
・There are bows dedicated to the left and right inside the shrine, giving the impression that the shrine is protecting the northernmost land.
・After visiting the shrine, I received a goshuin stamp at the awarding office. This is said to be the northernmost shrine with a priest, so there were many worshipers, and there were always groups of people waiting to receive their stamps.
・When I visited, there was a Shinto priest handling the request by himself, and although it seemed a little difficult, he carefully wrote it down for me and stamped it with a red seal. I guess there are a lot of visitors who admire the stamp saying it is the northernmost shrine in Japan. The firstfruits fee was 500 yen, so I made an offering.
・A shrine that originates from the northern guard of the Edo Shogunate. Although it is a local shrine, it is quite splendid. In Hokkaido, which doesn't have much history, it's a good idea to visit shrines and imagine what it was like before modernization, and look back on the history of Japan and the efforts of the Japanese people.

Japan's northernmost shrine where you can get a stamp
Kyugosha
In 1785, Murayama Denbei, a site contractor for the Matsumae domain, built a small shrine called Soya Daijingu Shrine in the land of Soya (Soya District, Kitami Province, Hokkaido) to enshrine Amaterasu Omikami as the guardian deity of the north gate.
On July 15, 1896, the shrine building was moved to its current location, Takemikazuchi-kami and Kotoshironushi-kami were enshrined together, and the name was changed to Hokumon Shrine.
A small and homely shrine.
A must-visit place for people who collect Goshuin stamps.

The Wakkanai Centennial Memorial Tower is a tall structure that showcases local history exhibits and offers an observation platform for panoramic views of the surrounding areas. With a well-maintained facility, visitors can appreciate the beautiful garden with various plants and intriguing objects on the exterior. Despite the lack of public transportation, it remains one of the best places to view nearby islands such as Sakhalin on a clear day. Natural history exhibits are available on its ground floor.
The views are great! When it's clear you can see a long, long way. There's a fair amount of glare and window tinting, so photos are very tricky to get right. There's some nice natural history exhibits on the ground floor, too.

Former Seto House, located in Wakkanai, Japan, is a historic property that served as the residence of a fishing foreman after World War II. This traditional Japanese house showcases the unique architectural style designed to withstand the cold and dry environment of the region. Visitors can explore exhibits related to Wakkanai's fishing industry and get a glimpse of life during that era. Additionally, there is an opportunity to experience the art of making Japanese tea using tea leaves cultivated without agrichemicals.
Wakkanai is a small city, and I happen to stumble upon Seto House while walking.
The entry fee is very small and the house is very well maintained! It is definitely a must see.
I would be willing to pay a bit more for entry as a foreigner and have all the signs translated to english.
Overall very pleasant experience, and at the end I even got a souvenir. Great staff, great house and great garden :)

The walls are made of corn stalks tied together with a latticework and finished with cement on the outside to protect against the cold. I think it is a masterpiece that shows the flexible adaptability of Japanese architecture, which was created to adapt to a cold and dry environment that is the opposite of Japan's hot and humid climate. It is a similar-style building that is especially worth preserving, as there are very few left in Korea these days.
