The Daikanbō Lookout is a picturesque location that offers a breathtaking vantage point of the Mt. Aso caldera and surrounding valleys. The area features stunning scenery that is perfect for taking photographs to share with friends and family. Additionally, the lookout boasts snack stands that serve delicious food to visitors. The signs are also available in English, making it easy for tourists to navigate the area.
Such a wonderful place, the view is nice and the snacks is really good! Worth a visit!

Unique view of the entire Aso caldera. Unfortunately view was not great on the day we went (end of March) due to the seasonal dust blown over from China from the Gobi desert producing a white haze that limited visibility.
Will have to go back!

Nice views - easy and slow walk up. if you are lucky, you can see some folks doing paragliding - really nice. They have a small shop selling stuff and soft serve ice cream. I won't recommend it.
Warning: don't use the washroom here, it's really smelly.

The Lookout points all along the Milk Road are really good. I honestly don't remember which one this was. We stopped at several spots to take in the view. Each stop had a little souvenir shop and sold things like ice-cream and coffee, as well as the usual t-shirts and other souvenirs. There were bathrooms at every stop as well. Definitely a unique place to see.

It was described to me as motorbike Mecca of Japan - and it lived up to expectations with gorgeous twists and turns to get there and a variety of bikes at the top and coming in constantly.
You can paraglide at the top for 18,000¥ and the views are incredible too.

Fantastic place, the signs also have English which is a bonus. Unfortunately when I went there it was a bit cloudy and foggy so didn't get the best view. But would highly recommend it if you are in the area.

The Daikanbo Lookout, situated in Kumamoto, Japan, offers a breathtaking vantage point to witness the awe-inspiring beauty of Mount Aso and its surroundings. From my internet data up to September 2021, I can provide a review of this picturesque location.
Daikanbo is perched at an elevation of approximately 1,000 meters, providing an unparalleled panoramic view of the iconic Mount Aso, one of the largest active volcanoes in the world. The vista here is simply stunning, especially during the different seasons, with lush greenery in spring and summer and a blanket of vibrant foliage in autumn.
The lookout is well-maintained and easily accessible by car, making it an ideal spot for tourists and nature enthusiasts. Additionally, there’s a small visitor center where you can learn more about the region’s geological history and volcanic activity.
One of the standout features is the ropeway that takes you even closer to the volcanic crater. It’s an unforgettable experience to witness the steaming vents and the immense volcanic caldera up close.
In summary, Daikanbo Lookout is a must-visit destination for those exploring the Aso region. Its breathtaking views of Mount Aso and its easy accessibility make it a top choice for nature lovers and anyone seeking a glimpse into the powerful forces of nature that shape our world.

Visitors can access unlimited entry to the car park for 410 yen per day and enjoy horse riding experiences for approximately 1500 yen per person per ride. On the way to the location I thought we are in the middle of nowhere because we are surrounded by greeneries, fields, cows. Then as we arrive, I am amazed that people are all there. Walking around the fields and the car parking is almost full. There are many cars and buses still coming in.
The place is good for exercise. We walked a lot.
The stores and museum are like water in the desert,
And people are lining up for coffee.
The hotdog truck vendor tried to speak english and it was adorable. 🥰

Also know as 草千里(literally grass 1000miles). The lakes(reflections), the climbs and the volcano. The view is fantastic. We can also climb behind the carpark to the lookout point. From the top, we can see the low-lying clouds. You can expect horses to loiter around during Spring time. Beautiful landscape.

Beautiful natural landscape, expanding for miles in the Kumamoto countryside. Nice stroll around the fields in pleasant weather conditions (not so much in the rain). Horses roaming the pastures. The only downside is the carparking situation, where there is only paid one nearby.

Aso-Kuju National Park is a sprawling 280 square mile park in Japan, featuring a diverse array of landscapes including mountains, grasslands, marshes, and hot springs. The park boasts some of the most stunning views in the country and draws hikers from all over to explore its network of trails. The Kuju Mountains are the highest on Kyushu island and offer an especially alluring trekking experience.
This is my favorite national park. All the volcanos are amazing, the view is extraordinary. Since Mt. Aso had a level 2 eruption so we couldn’t climb the top but we did climb the other volcano a bit. It’s amazing how big the crater is and Mt. Aso venting. If your a tourist and your coming to Kumamoto this is a must-go place.
Aso Cuddly Dominion is a charming zoo that houses numerous types of bears in simple enclosures. In addition, it offers an opportunity to pet bear cubs and dogs. Guests can also feed the bears and enjoy other fun activities within the premises. The petting area is particularly delightful with a chance to interact with baby goats and other animals. The zoo also boasts spectacular shows such as races of baby pigs at earlier times during the day.
Came here early in the morning for the helicopter, but stayed for the animals. Most of the animals are kind and you are allowed to pet or feed them. Food could be bought from vending machines in park including bear food. Decent cozy zoo and excellent helicopter ride of course.

Nice zoo. Cute animals. You can feed the bears. Nice activities inside. Dog petting area was great. We entered to get access to the Helicopter around aso which is inside. If you travel by JR sometimes the station info centre will give you 1000yen discount coupon per person.

We were there in winter, amidst a cold snap. So all the animals looked really cold and miserable. Perhaps summer would be better? But the place is a little rundown though.
Because it was a day trip from Kumamoto for us, not sure if it was worth the trip. The only saving grace was probably when it started to snow.

You can touch the baby goats and other animals. We went there only for the last hour they were open that day so we rushed to see animals. You can see races of baby pigs and other shows if you go at earlier times during the day!:)
Hi w — Google review
Many animals to pet! The only reason is not 5 stars is because when you go to pet the bears you think you will get a little cub. They brought one really large cub, not small cuddly. It was heavy and constantly eating. It was half the size of the adults and it wasn't what you expected 🙃 still it was cool. I just think when you pay to pet the animal you should have a choice if you don't want to pet a big one and prefer a smaller one. My daughter went there excited and then she was terrified. Not ready for that. They will take photos for you but there were tears in every photo. 😢 So there was that. They have a nice selection of animals. And a show where they have birds of flight where they allow part of the audience to participate. That was fun. No photos allowed there, though, so just in memory. Lovely grounds and so nice to feed pet and interact with so many animals. Thank you for the nice experience. I recommend for families and anyone. Enjoy 😉 😘
Shinysol1 Rodriguez — Google review
Typical small zoo. The cage is too tiny for the bear, I really feel sorry for that. I like the pigs, they are funny and super cute when they are doing the running competition. The shows are quite good. The kids will like it especially the monkeys and dogs show (as known as James-kun and Pung-kun). And don't miss the Helicopter tour around mount ASO! Super great experience and the price is reasonable.
MITHUNA27 — Google review
We came here on a day trip to Aso and it is one of the most depressing zoos we have been to. The bears are kept in small concrete areas, and they force the baby bears to dress up and do photo ops with families. Other animals have it a bit better, although the park does not seem to be well-maintained. The small animals are kept in way too small cages (especially the rabbits).
Perhaps the only thing really worth coming to this park for is the helicopter tours of Mt. Aso, but considering the zoo itself and how the animals are treated, I'm not sure it's even worth it. I'd recommend just taking the bus to the volcano itself and walking around like everyone else.
Tyler — Google review
Absolutely heartbreaking.
Many of the animals didn’t have adequate space or even toys. Many of the bears were just in bare, concrete enclosures, with dirty moss floors. Many were just pacing like they were in prison. And hell, with the concrete everywhere they may as well have been in a prison.
Then there’s the cockatoo who didn’t even have a cage he could move in. The parrots tied to post, of which one was shivering and another had started plucking it’s feathers- a sign of unhappiness in birds.
Lastly, you can round out your visit seeing one lone capybara in an enclosure that’s like 90% water despite them being a social and mostly land based animal. Or this sad emaciated pony. Or the sun bear cubs which have been taken from their moms to roam around a tiny little box with just a literal kitchen pot of water and no toys or anything.
I want to believe the employees mean well here but I feel so bad for these animals. Had I seen this pictures I never would’ve come and this place needs serious work… Maybe if they had allocated more money to building animal pens then buying a helicopter or building a pagoda garden the animals would have a better quality of life. If you love animals please don’t go here.
Plain and simple, this is animal abuse. Can you imagine living on hard concrete day and night, your entire life, with nothing to keep you busy? In a tiny area with no room to run?

Fun overall. 2-3 hours are great. Shows were good even I don’t understand Japanese.
Horse riding is cool. My kid asked for the second time. Lots of bears to see and they were quite active.
When we arrived at 230pm the helicopter tickets already sold out. Turn out may be a blessing to save a lot of money because we could actually drive up there and see.
Some animals are indeed sad. Like the chimpanzee- feels lonely. Many animal is a one man bank.

There were quite a few black bears. That was nice. (but it was also sad to see so many bears just locked up, especially 1 bear per cage - they seemed so lonely)
There is an animal show(?). It was very conflicting for me to watch that, considering animal rights.
But the place itself is well kept.
I think it would be good to visit with kids. There were group visitors and couples too.
It was raining a lot, but they had good umbrella there for visitors to borrow. That was good.

Unique volcano viewing experience on a helicopter!
DEFINITELY WOULD RECOMMEND all of you traveling to Aso to take this ride. We chose Plan E for the ride (50000 yen for max 3 pax, 20-min ride) as we have 3 people. 20 mins is enough for you to fly around the whole crater so that you can have a look of the volcano at different angles. Booking in advance is not available as it depends on the weather, but you may call on the morning of the day before you go to check whether there's time slot available (the staff know a little bit English so you don't need to worry much about communication).

Roadside station Aso is a toll road rest stop that offers picturesque views of Mount Aso and a variety of local specialties at its farmers' market, including pickled takana and soft ice cream made with Aso milk. The parking lot is free and provides amenities for sleeping in cars or campers, such as electrical hookups and sinks. Additionally, there is a local farmers market near the JR Aso station that offers fresh products in addition to the famous ice cream and milk.
This is a best place to enjoy Aso’s agricultural products. I have enjoyed lot of delicious food here and the milk is the best!

Wow this was a great shop with the parking. The weather wasn't nice but many people inside and outside. There was a big bathroom beside the shop separately. The EV charging area and cyclists area were too. We saw many camping cars parking there for the rest. There were many fresh veges and fruits outside, local food, drinks, radio eat snacks, crafts, and Kumamon stuff were inside. There was a room with the TV on to eat after buying the bento box, snacks, or drinks, which was a great idea to attract the people to come back. We just love that place!

Aso Station is a hub for various outdoor activities such as camping, cycling, and paragliding. Visitors can obtain information on available attractions at the travel information center located in JR Aso Station. The Kusasenri Observatory is a popular tourist spot situated at the foot of Mt. Aso in Kumamoto, Japan. Visitors can reach it by private tour bus, car or motorcycle. The observation deck offers breathtaking panoramic views of Mt. Aso and surrounding mountains as well as Kumamoto city in the distance on clear days. There are also two small ponds nearby, which visitors can explore during a short walk or hike up a small hill.
I remembered we reached here at about 4.20pm during the end of October last year. And we spent about two hours plus to wait for the sunset. I chose this Observatory because it is the nearest point to view Mount Aso from a distance. Getting near to the sunset, the colour of the volcanic smoke clouds changed from white to orange red. It was so awesome!

There were plenty of parking spaces available, parking costs 500 yen. We visited on a pretty foggy day so we didn't get to see much, but we are lucky to still be able to see the crater. Horse riding starts at 10am if I'm not wrong. We enjoyed the drive up to the Observatory more though! Keep a look out for animals as you're driving up. Also, note that it might get foggy some days, so just be aware and stay safe. I'd say the road up is wider than the roads leading to daikanbo lookout! A must visit place in Mt Aso. The store has a variety of fresh local vegetables, souvenirs, and more, and it's fun to browse around.
I was surprised at how cheap the vegetables and processed foods were, but since I was traveling, I bought some Japanese sweets such as strawberry daifuku and ate them. It wasn't too sweet and was very easy to eat, with a good balance between the sweet strawberry and the bean paste.

You can see the city of Aso beautifully from the parking lot. The stupa in front of the parking lot had scaffolding on it, probably because it was under restoration. As we climbed up, we saw the remains of the scaffolding of an abandoned ropeway, giving it a unique atmosphere.

It is located about 15 minutes from the famous scenic spot "Daikanbo", driving west on Prefectural Route 12.
There are no restrooms, shops, etc., just a gravel floor.
It's a nondescript parking lot, but the view from here is spectacular no matter what season you visit.
In front of the five peaks of Aso, which are also likened to "statues of reclining Buddha"
You can also see the Aso caldera plateau.
To get to the Daikanbo Observatory from the parking lot to the observatory, you have to walk uphill for about 300 meters, but the view is spectacular right in front of you when you park your car (motorcycle).
The height and direction of the view are almost the same as Daikanbo.
Personally, I like this point better than Daikanbo, which is popular with people sightseeing by car and motorcycle touring.

The main shrine was destroyed by the recent earthquake and they are in the process of rebuilding it. Another interesting thing about this area, there are many spring and fountains that you can hunt them down individually. These springs are also located in the shopping district and there are many nice cafe and restaurants you can try. You can go to the visitor centre for more information.

Actually, this is more of a construction site as we visited this place in May 2021. The original building collapsed and is covered by a big steel construction on which the shrine is printed on. Would only recommend to visit after the construction is done. Then it might be a site worth visiting. Parking is close to the site.

A large shrine complex with a lot of history. Sadly it suffered a lot of damage in the earthquake of 2016. A lot of construction is still going on and will be for some time. It is worth visiting whilst in the area to see the reconstruction, there are large boards around the site showing the process/progress.

As I was running, I saw a sign for ``Kokan Falls,'' so I took a detour. The waterfall itself wasn't very impressive, probably because it was a day with little water. I looked into it later and found out that there are two waterfalls, the Ontaki waterfall with a height of about 80 meters, and the Medaki waterfall with a height of about 100 meters, and it seems that it is famous for its icefall in winter. It seems that many people come to see the two waterfalls freeze, the water around them also frozen, and the icefall lit up. . . .
There's a paid parking lot, but there's no one in charge, and there's no one there but me, so it's practically free. The distance from this parking lot to the waterfall was quite difficult. . . If the result of walking is a magnificent view, all the hard work of walking will be blown away, but if the result of walking is not what you expected, you will feel tired all at once (bitter smile) Later, I realized that it was difficult to get to the place where you can see the waterfall (the second half was difficult) However, there was no reason why I couldn't come by bike.
