Sanmachi Suji, also known as the three narrow streets of Hida Takayama, is a charming area in the heart of the city. These streets are lined with traditional merchant houses, restaurants, shops, and breweries that date back to the Edo period. Despite being untouched by World War II bombings, these buildings have been remarkably preserved for centuries. This historic district offers a unique experience as you wander through atmospheric old buildings and explore museums and sake breweries.
Takayama old town is a town dating back to Edo era. They preserved the old buildings in a good way that you feel you are back to that time. Mostly they are now shops, cafes and restaurants, so bring some money to buy souvenirs or eat local food.

One of the streets of Takayama’s old town. A street filled with traditional picturesque wooden houses. There are plenty of shops and food places around here including sake tasting and even miso tasting shops. The place can feel a bit touristy. A good way to avoid the crowds is to go early morning or maybe visit the side streets. They’re equally as pretty but with a lot less tourists.

Takayama is a tourist trap. This town, Is 99% souvenir shop. Is a real tourist trap masked as a preserve old town. I love Japan. But trust me, skip Takayama. Just look at my pics. Every shop is the same. Cheap tourist goods. Fridge magnets. Etc. Can't even find a real cafe here that is not cater to tourist .

Many nice shops along the street : sake, miso, syrup, wagashi, cafes 🍵 Just dont come too late because they close quite early. Check and plan the trip right to enjoy the town.

Sanmachi Suji is a group of three main streets in the heart of Takayama, recognized as a Historically Significant Traditional Building Preservation Area, which means that all the old private houses and shop buildings are kept in pristine condition. In fact, it is considered one of the best-preserved areas in Japan, earning it the title of "Little Kyoto."
Even though the buildings are over 300 years old, many still function as restaurants, souvenir shops, and sake warehouses. It takes a few hours to properly explore all three parallel streets that make up the historic quarter, and a little longer if you stop at some of the museums here. A truly unique and splendid place!

Nice shopping area in Takayama with photo opportunities with the old houses. It can get very touristy though so for the best photos, probably mornings at 9-10am would be good when the shops are open and the light is nice (winter season).
The shops all close by 4-5pm in winter and there is nothing to do after in the area.

One of the most historical places we visited in Japan. Mostly, the shop closes on this street by 5 or 6 in the evening. But if you happen to see the stores open, the street is really alive. So much Japanese feels.
There are Japanese foods to try. And really, you should try. Souvenir shops are also open.
During the night, taking a photograph is magical. Specially when someone is riding on a bicycle. Should be added on your Japan to visit places. 🇯🇵❤️

Nice spot with preserved old merchant houses and some great cafes and sake breweries to visit. A must visit if you're in Takayama. Definitely try to come here earlier in the day as it only consists out of a few streets and gets pretty full in the afternoon.

Very touristy quaint shopping street lined with restaurants, souvenir shops, and snacks. It’s a long way to come for this so make sure you budget at least 2 to 3 hours to walk around and have a cuppa if you are coming to Takayama old town.

A few blocks of traditional Japanese houses, residences, stores, and cafés. A lot of tourists of course, but it's a nice piece of the city to stroll through. I would recommend stopping by in the late afternoon as it starts to grow darker, as the streets are gorgeous in the fading light and you'll find a lot less tourists as well.

It's the most famous part of Takayama and there are lots of street food options, cafes and restaurants. The buildings are all very old and very cool. The area is very photogenic. However in the high season it gets quite crowded.
Shirakabe Dozogai Street is a heritage site located in the peaceful town of Hida Furukawa, which boasts traditional buildings spread along a narrow street. Unlike its commercialized counterpart in Takayama, this old town center exudes an authentic and charming atmosphere that attracts few tourists daily. The streets are adorned with clear water channels filled with koi fish, adding to the picturesque scenery of the area.

Flowers bloom along the river and are beautiful. You can try your hand at braiding at Hida Furukawa Sakura Bussankan. I stopped by Mishima Wa Candle Shop and purchased some candles. He gave us detailed instructions on how to be careful when using candles religiously and how to easily secure candles during viewing. At Watanabe Sake Brewery, we purchased the award-winning Junmai Ginjo Horai. Beautiful street in a beautiful town, short train ride from Takayama if you are not staying in HidaFurukawa.

The old centre of Hida town is an underrated and less popular attraction than many similar places in this region, and hence seems less visited than other heritage sites. There are relatively few tourist shops, restaurants or commercial operations along the old streets, which are tranquil (when we visited on a May afternoon), attractive, and beautifully maintained. There is a lot of history here and without the hustle and bustle of mass-market tourists it is much easier to appreciate. Small canals line the residential streets, and temples and shrines, sake distillers, candle-makers, warehouses and museums are scattered here and there to add to the ambience.
If you are driving, there is free parking opposite the Hidashi Bunkakoryu Center just north of the train tracks, and the station is also just a short walk from Shirakabe Dozogai Street if you come by train (15 minutes from Takayama I believe).
I enjoyed wandering this district more than the old Takayama town centre just because of the peace and quiet and lack of commercial development. Highly recommended.

Watanabe is the best sake brewery I know! It’s located in the beautiful scenery of Hida. It’s a small town with a lot of nature around it.
The sake from Watanabe comes in a wide range. From standard well balanced to a perfect Daiginjo they have it all! You can taste the rice in the sake.
All of the worker are super friendly and will help you with all your questions. It’s a must to see this brewery if you like sake. They have a lovely tasting room where you can try all their products.

This is a beautiful shrine on top of a hill, serenely surrounded by trees. The best part is you can get a panoramic view of entire Hida-Furukawa from here. And this helps you understand why the shrine has been central to communal life in the area for centuries -- it's as if gods and goddesses were overseeing and protecting all folks down there. A wonderful place to visit, particularly for those who are spiritually inclined. Breathing in and out in front of the panoramic view can fill you with positive energy and inspirations!

The shrine is beautiful in the snow😍.
It was packed with visitors so it was hard to find parking. The roads were very slippery, it didn't seem like they have spread salt on the ground to melt the snow or have any antislip measures. There were many elderly there it looked very dangerous for them to climb the stairs and down.

I bought the train ticket from Takayama station to here. But make sure you plan it wisely. The train frequency is not that many returning to Takayama station. I think you might need to spend only 3-4hrs max here. (depends on the train schedule)
Takayama bus centre sells the package of 2000yen ( includes: bus ride back and fro, 1 cafe and 1 confectionery shop, the museum and festival hall) Depends on you what’s your purpose. I came here 1.5hr before lunchtime, so I prefer to have lunch than others.

Be mindful you are paying for the experience more so than the food so it is 750yen for each item in the menu. It was a nice experience. The owner is lovely. It is across from an amazing little wood maker shop where you can get quality artisanal gifts and souvenirs.

Spent one lovely summer afternoon in this cafe. We were the only ones there. The owner - a very kind lady - offered her special cheesecake, which didn’t disappoint. It had a siding of fruits: grapes and raspberries. 🍰
Everything on the menu costs ¥750 each, so coffee + cake was a little expensive, but still worth it if you aim to really relax inside a traditional Japanese home. 😌
There wasn’t really a museum, but the lady owner was very entertaining. She told us about the town’s matsuri and gave us some pamphlets as お守り 🥰

A nice looking shop & museum. And the appetizer, Hida beef beef stew, and dessert were all delicious and very satisfying. I was happy with the warm hospitality of my wife. However, it is a considerable volume. Especially cheesecake is not odd. The vessel is also wonderful. I would like to repeat it again. Next time, bring a tapper.

This is a whole house where in the first floor became an "museum cafe". The host is a very kind and nice lady, she cannot speak that much Japanese but her kindness make you feel welcome even in case you don't understand Japanese. Of course shoes off in the entrance. Good for small groups of people. The price might seems high for a coffee but you have the great chance to be served with really old pottery some cups are old even more than 200 years. Plates same. While going back to the past from the future the kind will show you a great collection of real antique traditional lacquer collection from edo period! Photos allowed. If you are with a guide you have more chance to grasp some of the stories behind this house and it's beautiful collections. Highly recommended! Amico del solevante local guide in Takayama and around

It's located in a neighborhood lined with old sake breweries, etc., and when you walk inside, you'll find a two-room Japanese-style room decorated with maki-e lacquerware, Old Imari pottery, and ink paintings, so it doesn't have the atmosphere of an art museum. .
The elegant woman who served us said that she and her husband, who love antiques, had collected items on display.
In such a situation, the coffee and cheesecake served in an old Imari bowl were moist and delicious with just the right amount of sweetness.

It was a model facility called The Roadside Station.
There is a space for large vehicles in the middle, and the parking lot has one-way traffic, making it suitable for large vehicles. However, the entrance and exit is a little narrow, so I think it would be difficult if large vehicles collided with each other. Also, considering the size of the facility, aren't the toilets small? This is the first route I took.

A roadside station with a large parking lot.
There are objects of people working on the land.
The premises are large, but the store is small.
There are shops selling souvenirs, a wooden products corner, an antiques and recycled goods corner, and a take-out snack bar.
There was even bear skin in the souvenir shop. Among the antiques, black telephones, electric fans, chests of drawers, and other Japanese dolls were sold forlornly.
It's fun to see old scales and other things mixed in with the recycling corner for power tools.
I haven't seen it recently, but a few years ago it looked like a bear was right there.
Two mothers tend the take-out corner in a slow manner.
●Hida beef skewers 400 yen
●Hida beef croquette 300 yen
Stroll around while grilling skewers.
There was also a place to draw water from the spring.
Because it is not connected to the Takayama city area, there are few cars passing by even on weekends, making it a quiet roadside station.
The Hida beef skewers are tender Hida beef seasoned with salt and pepper, and a little strong salt and pepper, making it even more delicious.
The Hida beef croquette was a delicious croquette with coarse breadcrumbs.
This roadside station was quite a slow and relaxing roadside station.

The Takayama Castle Ruins, constructed circa 1608, are a significant historical site located in a serene wooded area. There are games to play and videos to watch, so you can have a lot of fun. There is almost nothing in the area, so we recommend passing through it before reaching your destination.
