Lake Mashu is a stunning freshwater lake located in Japan, known for its crystal-clear waters. The lake fills the crater of an active volcano and is considered to be one of the most beautiful lakes in Japan. It was once recognized for holding the world record for water clarity. The Ainu called the island in the middle, Isle of Gods.
Recommend observation deck 3.
Somehow google recommends deck 1 as the best but for me deck 3 was def better. Video 1 is of deck 3 and you get a beautiful angle of the lake. Didn’t bother taking videos for deck 1 except for the fox that was roaming around 🤣
Recommend trying the Blue ice cream (ramune flavoured) as well as the Yubari melon (1 for 600 yen)

This is a very beautiful lake and makes for incredible hiking. We visited recently and added a day hike around this lake to the short hike past Mt Io. Getting to the lake is a little tricky if you are staying in Kawayu Onsen. There is a bus which operates on a limited schedule from Mashu town but leaves late and returns early leaving very little time for anything more than visiting the observation deck. Definitely not for a long day hike. We didn’t have a car so ended up hitch hiking to and from the lake. Fortunately Japanese people are extremely nice and we easily got rides to and from Kawayu Onsen.
We did the hike around the south portion of the lake to the Mt Kamui lookout point. An amazing hike with zero visibility on the way out but the clouds lifted for the return and we finally got to see how beautiful the lake is. Afterwards, we got to go back to our ryokan and relax away our pain. If you want any specific info on this hike, feel free to reach out to us. You can find our exact route by searching for Career Break Adventures and Lake Mashu, Japanese Hike or something similar. Good luck and enjoy!

10 stars if I could, the first time here it was very foggy and mysterious. It actually has a reputation for being a mysterious place and I can see why. Fog lasted for most of the day and we were there very early. This second trip was absolutely breathtaking!! Not a single cloud in the sky, on the 1300ft drive up we saw plenty of deer and quite a few red foxes ( not the actor lol ). It is what they refer to a caldera lake and is pure in every sense of the word. It is the second clearest/ purest lake on earth behind Lake Baikal in Russia. There are 3 observatories in all 2 of them are on the west side, observatory 1 which is the eldest of the 3 sits 692ft above Lake Mashu and has washrooms and souvenir shops and restaurants the parking here is not free while at observation point 3 sitting at 2198ft has free parking and in my opinion a much more ooooh and awe view. There isn't any amenities like washrooms here though. Observation point 2 is on the east and is another amazing view. You simply have to come and see it in person, the blue water has to be seen. I've never ever seen a color so mystifying and magical. You can also see Lake Kussharo and see Mt Lo. You can't go down near the water hence the purity of the water. The are other places within Aklan National Park like Lake Kuttara, the water is almost as pure but you can go down to the water and ride paddleboats. Add another tick on your bucket list folks...enjoy

The huge lake situated in the caldera of a stratovolcano in Japan is completely frozen over every winter. It is considered as Japan's largest caldera lake, with a small volcano visible from its center which creates the island Naka-jima best viewed from Bihoro Pass. The park can be accessed through route 102 that offers breathtaking views of Lake Kussharo, especially during sunset.
Taken during winter in feb.
Beautiful lake to visit anytime of the year. There are quite a few different wildlife here that are good to spot during dawn and evenings.
This area is very peaceful and the road that runs along the lake offers lots of scenic spots for photos.
There are many onsens in this area and some are just by the lake. Offering a super peaceful experience while you relax in the ryokan.

Lake Mashu Observatory No.1 offers a stunning vista of a picturesque lake surrounded by mountains, complete with an eatery and souvenir shop. The island in the middle of the lake is said to be a column stretching down to the lake floor, making for a truly magical sight. This observation deck was open on January 3rd, 2019 while other viewing spots were closed for winter from November until April.

Visited on Sunday in September 2023🎶
There is something called Kamui Terrace that didn't exist when I came here 8 years ago, so I think it's a must-see place for sightseeing in Lake Mashu.
There is a charge for the parking lot (500 yen for cars), but you can use the Iouzan parking lot and Lake Mashu Observation Deck 1 once each, so you can enjoy sightseeing as a set 🎶
Although it was a Sunday, I was able to park my car without waiting and was able to enjoy sightseeing with peace of mind.
The shop inside the rest house has also been transformed into a stylish place, and you can enjoy the beautiful view of Lake Mashu while relaxing and enjoying your coffee.
Lake Mashu also has the third observation deck and the Ura-Mashu Lake observation deck. Personally, I like the view from the third observation deck the best, but the view of Lake Mashu from the first observation deck is the best. It's popular and offers spectacular views that you may have seen on TV, so it's a must-see for sightseeing in eastern Hokkaido...😊✨

I live in Hokkaido, and no matter how many times I've been there, I don't remember ever having it so sunny! Even though there is a fee for parking, you can park safely, and not only can you enjoy the view, but there are also people sitting and admiring it for a while, so you can take a relaxing break. There were food, drinks, and souvenirs for sale, and since we were also planning to go to Mt. Io, the 500 yen fee, valid for 2 days, seemed to be cheap as a maintenance fee.

I recently visited Lake Mashu and was lucky enough to see it without any fog. The view was absolutely stunning! And I even spotted a couple of ezo deers on the slope. For anyone planning to visit, be sure to bring sunglasses during sunny days to protect your eyes and dress warmly as it can be very windy. Plenty of car parking spaces are available.
Highly recommend visiting on sunny days, as I've heard that Lake Mashu is often covered in fog. Don’t forget to visit the souvenir shop for delicious snacks as well.

Watanabe Experience Farm is a vast 70-hectare ranch located just a short drive from JR Mashu Station and the Akan Interchange. Nestled at the base of Mashu Mountain, this farm is home to 120 dairy cows and offers visitors an immersive farming experience. Guests can try their hand at milking cows, sample fresh milk, take tractor rides around the farm, and even feed the gentle and curious cows grazing in the meadows.
An interesting farm experience where you can milk the cow, feed the cow, take the tractor around the field and taste the milk etc.
The kids took the package that includes milking of cow (3000 yen per pax) and adults took a simple package (1200 yen per pax) with tractor ride, milk tasting and photography.
The guide gave a short explanation of rearing cow in English. Overall it is a great experience for the kids.

It was a wonderful farm experience! We took a 2900 yen per person tour package which included butter making, ice cream making, milking of cow, tasting the cow’s milk, feeding cows and a tour around the cattle farm. Our guide could speak some English and shared many interesting fun facts about rearing cows. The farm was considerably clean and tidy, with no bad smell except during the feeding. The butter and ice cream were delicious! It was fun making your own butter and ice cream. We were taught how to milk cows and it was not easy. There were some soccer balls and softball gloves for visitors to play with on their grass field for free. Overall an enjoyable experience which I would highly recommend to both youths and families.

Sunayu Onsen is a beach located on the shore of Lake Kussharo that is famous for its distinct hot springs concealed under the black sands. During winter, migrating swans add to the beauty of this place. Visitors can enjoy a relaxing foot bath by sitting on a bench and digging their feet into the sand to feel the warmth of water when it cools down. The beach is also ideal for sand play activities for children.
This spot is just a few minutes' drive away from Swan Lake (Kotan Onsen). I was again blown away by the stunning view. During the winter months, the area is home to a large number of swans, which adds to the natural beauty of the surroundings.
While this spot is definitely more touristy than the other in the area, with tour buses stopping here for lunch, I believe it's worth a visit for the incredible view alone. The scenery is truly breathtaking.
There is a unique onsen here as well, which is to dig the sand to build your own onsen. While I did not personally try the onsen, I imagine it would only add to the already incredible experience of being in this beautiful location.
Overall, recommended to visit this spot during the winter months for the chance to see the swans and take in the stunning view.

Sunayu Onsen
As one of the most luxurious destinations, this is a very popular outdoor bathing site on the shores
of lake Kussharo. As there are too many tourists already using the ready made bathtubs, the best
thing to do is to go as far as back as possible, dig your own hole, and make your own bathtub. Don’t
forget to bring your own bucket and shovel so that you can adjust the temperature with your shovel
and lake water.
On the other side, another interesting stop is the Sunayu beach (Map Code: 638 148 651*00). You
can dip your feet for free in the natural hot spring foot bath or walk down to the lake and dig your
own. Dig far enough into the sand and you’ll create your very own Onsen. This is a test area and is interesting because the hot water does not come out from a spring or lake.
It actually comes out from the sand. If you did into the sand, you will find the hot water in the sand.
There are also Whopper Swans and Mallard Ducks flying in to the edge of the bed and lake to enjoy
the warm clear water. The Whopper Swans have come flying in from as far as Siberia to stop over
here in winter! I have included some photos of these two kinds of beautiful birds. There is also a
man-made small hot water enclosure to dip your legs in to warm then but it costs 100yen.
You can enjoy onsen or dig one for yourself if you have brought the equipment. Is a tourist bus
visiting spot with free parking lots. Recommend to come during sunset

An amazing place where the 'not so sexy' black sands hide the thermal heat waiting to be unleashed. A simple bench and you are ready for a shiok foot bath. When the water cools, just with your feet to dig deeper and feel the hot water surfaced out.
The kids have so much fun with sand play and requested to come back the next day.

Awesome place to bring kids! The water isn't that cold and here's the highlight: if you dig in the beach, there is hot spring water. However, the water is extremely hot so you will have to mix it with the cold lake water. There is a shop where they rent shovels if your kid wants to dig a lot.

It is a very beautiful site. Most of the lake was frozen, but because of the hot spring close to the coast, that part was not frozen so all the swans were swimming really close to us.

At the young age of 21, he rose to the rank of yokozuna and won the highest makuuchi title 32 times. And outstanding looks with a Ukrainian father. The achievements of a superstar from Teshikaga, a local area, are being passed down to the present day. It is also fun to compare it with the Chiyonoyama/Chiyonofuji Museum in Fukushima Town and the Kitanoumi Memorial Hall in Sobetsu Town.

(Translated by Google) It was my first time visiting. When you pay 420 yen and go inside, sumo jinku is playing. When I was little, I used to sit on my grandpa's lap and watch Taiho sumo. I loved ``Taiho'' ❤️After taking my time to look around the building, I spoke to the woman at the reception desk. Luckily, there was no one else there, so I had a very valuable and enjoyable time listening to stories about Yokozuna and Wang Peng. He was very knowledgeable about sumo wrestling. This is a recommended place for those who like sumo. I bought ``Taiho Senbei'' as a souvenir. It was delicious! Definitely buy it. Recommended.

Kussharo Kotan Ainu Folk Museum is a small yet deeply informative museum showcasing the history and culture of the Ainu people in the area. Visitors can explore exhibits, videos, and items used in rituals, gaining insight into how the Ainu have lived in harmony with nature and preserved their identity through generations. The museum offers an opportunity to learn about traditional Ainu clothing and gain a deeper understanding of their way of life.

Personally, I stopped by while driving around Lake Kussharo with the aim of ``driving as far as I can in a week''.
Since I wasn't traveling in a hurry, I asked for a screening of ``Chironnupu Kamui Iomante (shortened version)'' (35 minutes).
Customs and beliefs should be respected, and I was reminded of the importance of accepting each person's differences. It was good to see you.
It was also great to be able to experience for the first time the ``Shikerebe tea (yellowfin tuna tea)'' that was offered during the screening. thank you very much.
It's great that you can rent ethnic costumes (free of charge) and take commemorative photos. (If possible, I would like you to consider coordinating in the style of Asirpa, Nishipa Tanigaki, or Inkaramak. I'm sure there are many hurdles due to adult circumstances, but I would like you to consider coordinating in the style of ``○○'' with someone as a model. I don't think there's any problem with displaying it and having people associate it with you.)
I think this is a culture and facility that should be preserved.

Although it was a simple space, it was well organized, and it was a very fun experience to be able to take pictures wearing traditional Ainu clothes. There is also a corner where you can make your own traditional Ainu patterns, so I had a fun time using the colored paper and pattern frames provided. Although I am a foreigner, I can speak very little Japanese. After the tour, I told the director that this space was really, really pretty. From Kawayu Onsen, take Route 52 along Lake Kussharo and the Kussharo Mashuko Line toward the Wakoto Peninsula, passing Sunayu and Ikenoyu, and you will reach the Kotan area in a few minutes.
It is said that this building was opened in June 1982 (Showa 57). Admission fee is 420 yen for adults.
The museum is only open during the summer, and its opening hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum is closed during the winter from December to April 9 of the following year. Free parking lot 🅿️🚗 is also available🆗.
This time, it was after hours, so I couldn't enter the museum, but there were about 450 items on display where you could learn about the life and history of the Ainu people, and a video introducing the history of the Ainu was also shown. The document says that there is.
The document also states that in June 2020, the name of the facility was changed from "Teshikaga Town Kussharo Kotan Ainu Folklore Museum" to "Teshikaga Town Kussharo Kotan Ainu Folklore Museum." ``Folklore'' → ``ethnicity.''

(Translated by Google) 2023.9.24 From the Lake Kussharo side, there is a water channel about 100 meters deep at the beginning of the descent from the pass (in the direction of Mt. Io), and it is difficult to get there unless you are an SUV with large tires.
My car that day was a CX-5, and if you don't step over or avoid it well, you'll get hit under the car.
You can afford a Pajero or Jimny.
From the Mt. Io side, the dirt is almost flat, so it can be accessed by light or regular passenger cars with small tires.
However, the road leading from the dirt to the swamp side and the swamp parking lot are dirt roads, so on rainy days you might slip if you don't have a 4WD.
There is a parking space for about 5 cars if you park well. If it's more than that, you won't be able to turn due to lack of space.
However, it's a place where you rarely see other people, so it's rarely crowded.
From the car park to the pond, walk about 200 to 300 meters along a gentle downward slope.
The road surface is dirt and volcanic ash, but you can walk on it in Crocs except on rainy days.
When you arrive at the swamp, you will see a highly acidic hot spring gushing out from the bottom of the swamp in front of you, and you can smell the same strong smell as Kawayu Onsen.
I think it's because of that, but you might be a little surprised to see that the area is full of dead trees.
On the other side of the swamp, fish are actively swimming and jumping for insects on the surface of the water, so I think the hot spring is only flowing in the front.
On the ground in front of it are a number of very old Godo Shusei whiskey bottles scattered, some of which are broken, so please be careful when walking if you are wearing footwear with thin soles.
Someone may have stayed there for an extended period of time fishing or hunting decades ago.
I'm told that you have to take home the trash you put out yourself.

Beautiful pond and somehow still manage to charm despite the overcast and rain.
Love the place as it calm the spirit and exudes a sense of peace and serenity.

Mysterious blue water pool. Beautiful.
Not a very big place, but there are trails leading further into the foilage. Signs indicate bears might be seen.
Mashū Station is a key transportation hub for travelers heading to Lake Mashu. Situated south of Route 391, it may seem distant from the city center but serves as the gateway to Mashu tourism. The station boasts amenities such as clean restrooms, a helpful tourist information center, and a relaxing footbath. Additionally, visitors can store their luggage for a fee.
(Translated by Google) If you take the rapid train ``Shiretoko Mashu'' from Kushiro Station, you will be connected to the bus bound for Lake Mashu (one round trip per day!) at this station.
Lake Mashu was wonderful, but this station was also very nice as it had the feel of a sophisticated country station.

(Translated by Google) As you arrive at the station by heading south on Route 391, you will notice that it is quite far from the center of the city. As the entrance to Mashu tourism, it is a beautiful manned station with flush toilets, a friendly tourist information center, and a pleasant footbath. You can leave your luggage at the counter for a fee. If you ask at the tourist information center, they will deliver a pork bowl bento box from a nearby restaurant as an ekiben (the restaurant I went to eat at was delicious).

(Translated by Google) There were no people walking around Mashu Station at 7am on weekdays.
Since there are probably only a few, it seems like there will be a flow of people when the time comes.
The temperature of the footbath is appropriate and not too lukewarm.
It seems that there is a bus to Lake Mashu once a day (10:30).
