The Shiretoko Go-Ko or Shiretokogo Lake is a remote area surrounded by nature and features a raised boardwalk that leads to five seasonal trails, becoming an attraction for tourists during bear season. The location offers breathtaking views of the forested cliffs above the ocean, which are especially beautiful in autumn due to the magnificent colors of nature. Visitors are required to watch a safety video about how to avoid bears since encountering one can lead to danger with no defense mechanism available.
Basically this lake is closed for public during winter, but you can access it if you participate yourself for midwinter ecological tour. The information is provided in tourist center or even in your accommodation.
During the tour, we can access the frozen lake, which is usually inaccessible in summer. Oppositely, the skywalk is closed. When the snow is thick enough, we are even allowed to approach the area around below the skywalk to see the drift ice. However, when I came, the winter was warmer than usual. The snow is not really thick that some grasses growing, and we are not allowed to damage them by stepping on it.
The best time to visit is when the sky is clear and the animals can be seen, but anytime possible is okay. Overall, it is very beautiful to see the landscape full of white while listening to the guide explanation.

Lovely, easy 1.6km walk along the elevated boardwalk. Very clear morning so we could see the sea and the lake. Lake itself was a little smaller than expected but not bad for a leisurely post breakfast stroll. People with babies and wheelchairs could manage the free boardwalk as well. Didn’t bother with the paid guided walk since we weren’t dressed in hiking gear.
Letitia Ng — Google review
A mandatory 3-hour guided tour (to cover 3km, which is absurd) is necessary if you want to visit the five lakes. It’s quite expensive, too. I stuck with the free elevated walkway to the first lake. Views were underwhelming and not a lot of signs for information is given.
Leung — Google review
Beautiful in the autumn. Though you only see 1 lake on the elevated wooden pathway, do know that there are a total of 5 lakes. Also the drive up to the place was stunning! The colours of autumn was magnificent.
Abii Muru — Google review
You can see sika deer, squirrels, bears and foxes living in nature while walking along the promenade. All five lakes are connected by a promenade and are easy to walk and safe.
There is also a guide so you can enjoy nature more. The scenery that can be seen depends on the season, so you can enjoy it even if you go many times.
MIQ 14 — Google review
The richest man or woman in the world could never create something a fraction as beautiful as the mountains, lakes, animals and forest that you can see here.
The boardwalk is well made of wood and there are no steps or slopes so a person with a disability could manage this route between the lakes with ease.
Please never try to attract or feed the bears. It would be the death of them because they would become addicted to human food. Respect the animals by leaving them alone.

Magnificent view between Shiretoko Mountains and Okhotsk sea.
Welcome to heaven cafe 🤣 amused by this sign board. You can still grab a drink here even in the winter cold on feb.
Seems like during non winter months you can climb to the observation deck for a better view of the sea.
The drift ice have just came to the area about 2 days back and is still visible in the background of the video.
On a good day like this you can see the mt kounabetsu on the side as well.

Interesting view point to stop and stretch your legs for a bit. The fun is in the drive leading to this point where you look like you’re driving up to the sky. There’s also a vending machine and what looks to be a cafe though I couldn’t tell if it was open when I visited.

Kamuiwakka Hot Falls is a picturesque location with a unique feature of being fed by hot springs. The surrounding area boasts rustic outdoor onsens with shallow pools for bathing, providing visitors with a comfortable warmth while they swim in various water holes along the stream. It's important to note that the road leading to Kamuiwakka Hot Falls is an unsealed 10km route, and caution should be taken as deer may appear after dusk.
Absolutely incredible experience! You must book in advance though (at least one day before) - so be sure to do so or you won't be able to participate on that day. You also must wear appropriate sandals or water shoes.
To get here you must drive for around 10km along a well maintained forest road (dirt track) however I also believe a shuttle bus service operates during the peak season.
Upon arrival, show the friendly staff your booking confirmation and they'll provide you with a helmet and useful information about the Waterfalls and how to enjoy the experience safely.
Then, you make your way to the first waterfall and continue upwards, passing through deep pools, large rocky areas and lots of different waterfalls as the water gets warmer and warmer the further up you go towards the spring. There are ropes in some areas to assist you in climbing the rocks. There is a member of staff stationed towards the top of the route, too, if you need any assistance.
The waterfalls are surrounded by stunning forests and towering mountains. You are really surrounded by nature everywhere and it's so beautiful and peaceful. It's just the most wonderful place!
I'd highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting Shiretoko National Park - you won't regret it!

Visiting this place after the Shiretoko 5 lakes. On the way we encountered a bear walking along the bitumen road. We were warned about this possibility. The bear was probably used to human present, he just minded his own business, as if no one else around him. The Kamuiwakka falls is in a remote area, access would be private or rental car only. I doubt if a public bus is available. The river is warm as the source is the hot waterfall on the upper stream. We managed to walk , probably halfway before the top, to small pools area to have a dip. Further hike was prohibited that day due to fallen rocks. The area is beautiful, and visiting the falls would probably be many onsen lovers' dream.

This is a fascinating place in that the falls are fed from a spring with hot water. The temperature is a comfortable warmth. People are free to wander up the falls and many swim in the different water holes that are along the stream.

4 stars mainly because you see many Deers on the way and it's really exciting! The water for wasn't hot and it was nice but nothing more. Muddy road.
The Waterfall of Oshinkoshin is a remarkable natural attraction that splits into two streams and features a staircase leading to the top, lookout platforms, and a gift shop. Located conveniently next to the road with ample parking space, this waterfall is definitely worth the visit. Despite its seemingly small size, its powerful flow creates an awe-inspiring view that will send chills down your spine.
Must see place for a bucket list tick off before you kick the bucket. They have a souvenir shop, clean bathrooms and free parking.

Beautiful waterfall that we happened upon when making our way to the Michi no Eki in Shari. Parking right next to the waterfalls and toilets. Be warned if you go in the winter, the stairs are a bit perilous. But, gorgeous view of the ocean (drift ice if you go in February).

Lovely waterfall worth a stop if you’re heading in or out of Utoro. Just a couple of steps up and you’ll be greeted by a waterfall of multiple streams. Not a large waterfall but certainly a beautiful one. Worth a short stop since it’s so easily accessible. Ample free parking and no entrance fee.

Taken in early feb. The drift ice have just arrived in shiretoko this season. Amazing view of dift ice from shiretoko. A good flowing waterfall which is rare considering most of the other falls are frozen during winter.
A good short stop over when you are entering or exiting shiretoko.. just a few stairs to reach the photo spot. There is a rest room at this stop as well.
The steps can be quite slippery in winter. Do advice hike shoes or snow spikes during winter months. Though its just a very short distance up.

Free entry. Beautiful waterfall. Will get wet so make sure your parka or jacket is waterproof. Hard to take pictures but definitely worth it. The steps are very wet and slippery especially in winter where everything freezes up. Reccomend using boots to break ice before walking up. Of course, make sure that you are also anchored to the railway. The view at the top is definitely worth the walk. Would reccomend. There are some restrooms at the side too.

An impressive waterfall!
Right next to the road, you can find a sign and quite spacious parking lot. You may just drop by for a few minute break, but don’t miss the waterfall. I visited on a rainy day and it was magnificent! It seems Oshinkoshin is a small sized waterfall, but you can almost feel the powerful flow right in front of your face! Indeed a chilling view!
Next to the parking lot is a road station, where you can find lots of local souvenirs! I recommend Genghis Khan caramel. Not so strange but interesting. So many fun food stuffs to try!
The Furepe Falls provides breathtaking views of cascading groundwater off a cliff into the sea. Visitors can also enjoy a free foot bath and get directions from the guesthouse staff. The trail from the Shiretoko Nature Centre offers stunning views of different terrains, mountain ranges, and a panoramic view of the sea and cove. Despite being covered in snow, slush, and soft mud at certain points, it is an awe-inspiring trek to witness nature at its finest.
Breathtaking views! Spotted many deers along the trail. If you come during this period a long sleeve tee and an over shirt should be enough. 2km trail (return trip) which lasts around 40 mins 1km there and 1km back.
Videos shot in 4k so thumbs up if it was helpful 👍🏾

It's is a 30-40min round trip walk from the shiretoko nature center. You can skip the deer walk as you will likely see deer when walking to the falls. The waterfall has very little water. It's mostly a view of the ocean which is beautiful but I'm not sure it's worth the time of the walk. It would be much better if it was raining so there was more water.

Nice scenic trekking. You can skip number 2 Deer Fence Course. Go straight toward the waterfall. We saw lots of deer near the gate to lighthouse.

We took the trail from the Shiretoko Nature Centre and were really glad to have rented walking boots as the trail was in parts covered by snow, slush and soft mud. Our trek brought us past different terrain and towards the second half could see the magnificent mountain ranges flanking us in the far distance. The view was rewarding at the end - a panorama of sea, cove, and the fall majestic even when it is dry enveloped by the sounds of nature. We sat in awe at the wooden hut at its edge to admire nature at one of its best.

Lovely easy walking area (for fit/normal people) during the day. Only worth going if it’s sunny. If not you need to rent boots from the centre for 500 Yen, and you can barely see a few metres in front. At this time of year it wasn’t too busy. Sometimes there are deer. The view is only at the end of the walk, however.

Cape Shiretoko is a UNESCO-listed natural landscape that boasts of being the southernmost point where sea ice can be seen during winter. The peninsula features an untamed wilderness with lush greenery and grazing sika deer. Beyond the tip of the cape lies a sea area that marks the disputed boundary between Japan and Russia, with calls for the return of Northern Territories.

There is a spot along the way where you can easily see brown bears, but it's too far away to see them clearly. There are explanations of the various shapes of rocks, but I can't think of anything more than "huh."
In other words, the Cape Shiretoko cruise itself lacks excitement overall. I don't think it's worth paying 10,000 yen to ride.

Really helpful staff. We were a little confused about what was available in advance. We were able to rent rubber boots for 500 yen each which were really handy in the snow. The first walk to Furepe Falls was 2km, it was a nice walk, the snow looked impressive and we saw some deer along the way. The waterfall was a trickle so not that much to see but the cliffs were impressive and worth a look. The wind was a bit scary when we visited!
Back at the centre we decided to do a second trail - we asked at the counter what's available and were given a map for another trail into woodland. It took us about an hour and a half on snow shoes (also rented for 500 yen each). Hard work for the legs but good fun! Some beautiful views of the trees in snow and the overlooking mountains, with an observation area at the halfway point.
I wasn't that interested in the lectures/films at the centre itself but the staff were really friendly and helpful at setting us up for our walks. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the Shiretoko area

Very helpful staff and the best place for information on any activity in the Shiretoko Peninsula. You can rent/buy equipment such as bear mace spray, boots.
Special shoutout to Dustin for the informal hiking advice on climbing Mount Rausu. He speaks excellent English and is available at the North Face shop. Some of the park staff also speak good English and were very knowledgeable. The cafe serves fantastic coffee (“Melbourne quality” lattes). Food is expensive and small ish. There are two walking routes available; 45 min to Furepe waterfall (recommended) and 2 hours or 1 hour if you’re a fit person on the forest keeper trail. The later is a bit boring, more for killing time. If you’ve already seen the Mountain range it’s not worth the walk to the viewpoint. The forest is partially artificial.
It would be great if you could fill up a water bottle here.
Note: this is a review for the centre itself, not the activities around. It would be unfair to rate a building based on the uncontrollable environment around it. This, the enjoyment of the walking nearby is subject to weather conditions, but not worth visiting just for the purpose of these walks.

(Translated by Google) I climbed Mount Sharidake (1547m), one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains in Hokkaido!
Located at the base of the Shiretoko Peninsula⛰
From the Sea of Okhotsk side, the base is wide and it looks like an independent peak in the shape of Mt. Fuji, so it seems to have the names "Okhotsk Fuji" and "Shari Fuji" 💪✨
Climbing time is 6 hours in total🥾
For the climb, we chose a wild course that involved climbing along the stream while looking for a crossing route lol.
I spent about 2 hours climbing a mountain that I had never experienced before🔥
A number of waterfalls appear from the lower fork, and combined with the athletic mountain climbing, you can have fun increasing the altitude!
Then I realized that I am good at mountain climbing and my speed is fast lol
Like a kunoichi🥷He quickly crossed the river and proudly jumped over the stones🤣
Halfway through, my speed increased to the point where I was leaving my parents behind (I'm usually the one who climbs slowly and gets left behind 🤘)
On the way, the road splits from the new road to the summit, but I was climbing so quickly that I thought I might have taken the wrong route. Apparently he thought so and asked the people who were going down the mountain 🙏
A man from Shimoyama said, ``I didn't see any young people there. If you were young, you'll never forget it!'' There was also a joke 😂
In any case, we were relieved that we met before the summit!
After climbing the mountain, we had a great conversation with an uncle who had come from Iwate, and we climbed together ⛰ Apparently he is currently climbing 4 mountains in Hokkaido! ! Tremendous physical strength🫣🔥
Finally, the family completed the summit❣️
From the top of the mountain, we could see Mt. Rausu, the mountains of Akan, the Sea of Okhotsk, Kunashir Island, and Mt. Daisetsu in the distance, enjoying a wonderful panoramic view.
You won't get bored until the very end! Climbing that makes you feel excited🥰
This is what makes mountain climbing so interesting.

It takes about 2 hours in a blink of an eye while worshiping at a shrine, taking a walk, and getting water.
Key chains and amulets filled with water are sold at Shari Road Station.
A 350ml PET bottle (with a fortune slip) is on sale, so you can put water in it and take it home.
Ema are also sold (you can lend them magic), and you can hang them yourself, or you can hang them by mail to the roadside station.

First, proceed to worship, passing through the second torii gate, crossing a small bridge, and climbing up a slightly steep slope.

There are almost no options for cheap day trip baths in the Utoro area, so we chose this facility. I think the next cheapest one was 800 yen. This bathhouse is located on a hill where many hotels are located, and is hidden in a thicket of trees, giving it the feel of a pension house. The parking lot and rest area were fairly spacious, but the important part was the bathroom, which wasn't that big.
There is one indoor bath and one open-air bath, both of which are about 2 tatami mats in size, which can be quite small if there are 15 guests. The indoor bath, which is labeled as a hot spring, is reasonably hot, but the open-air bath was even hotter. The building is located on top of a cliff, and the open-air bath is on the edge of the cliff. You can see the ocean from between the trees, and the sea breeze is refreshing.
The quality of the water was a pale ocher and cloudy, and it had a slight sulfur smell, and when it entered my mouth, I felt a slight mellow salty taste. The feel of the water is not that different from regular hot water, but there is a slight feeling of resistance on the skin, and the skin feels slightly slippery after the bath.
There is a rest area with sofas and tatami mats at the back of the bathhouse where you can take a break and cool off, but it doesn't seem like a place you'll want to stay for too long.
I think it is a bathhouse that is used like a public bath where you can quickly enter and exit immediately.

Oronko Rock is a craggy formation that can be climbed via winding stairs, offering stunning sea views and sunrises. It is a popular spot for sunset viewing and provides panoramic views of Utoro town. The climb to the top takes only five minutes and there is no fee to access it. However, visitors should exercise caution when ascending or descending the rock.
Entrance is roped off advising not to attempt climbing up the stairs unless snow shoes are available. Some of the stairs were slippery from snow but holding onto the rail is good enough with regular trekking boots for me. Around 100 steps give or take, so only a short hike is required. View on top of the rock is impeccable given the drift ice this year is abundant.

It was an enjoyable little hike. It is free to enter. (I was told it is closed in winter.) The steps up can get your heart rate up but it's not that long until the top. Nice views of the town and the port area. Be careful, going up the steps are cement but of various uneven sizes. At the top the steps and boardwalk are made of wood and there are many bad spots where the wood has rotted or broken. We went at 6am before it got too hot. The lighting then was nice.

Amazing park! I loved the walk around the 5 lakes - it is a very manageable route. I think it’s great that you must watch an informative video about the local wildlife and ecosystem- I wish more places would do this! The tutorial was comprehensive and easy to understand for an English speaker, and the fee was more than fair for access to the park.
However, if you don’t want to pay the entrance fee, or are not up to a longer walk, the free board walk is absolutely stunning! So I would recommend this place regardless.
I went during golden week, so when it’s a busy season get there early! I arrived at around 8:30 and basically went right in. When I left at 10:30/11 ish the parking lot was FULL, and there were dozens of cars lined up down the road! So plan ahead!
Also - When I went in early May, cherry blossoms were just beginning to bloom - there are a few trees that grow by the lakes. In a week or so I think they’ll be in full bloom!

Joined a 3 hour walking tour around 5 lakes. The guide was patient to introduce traces of bear activities, and share with us lots of information about wide life and plants. The park opened again on 20 April which was just in time for us to visit while we were in Shiretoko. It was beautiful, absolutely worth visiting.
The long route was closed due to snow, but the short route and elevated walkway were open. The elevated walkway is free, if you want to do the ground route you pay a small fee and attend a lecture on how to avoid encounters with bears.
The short route takes you past two of the five lakes. Even without the long route, you get a great view and it's still worth the visit. The ground routes join the elevated walkway at the end. The walkway is great for views and is accessible so if you have any issues with mobility it's a great option. If the weather isn't great or is snowy you can rent rubber boots from the Shiretoko Natural Centre for 500yen.
We found it really helpful to check @shiretoko_goko on Twitter as they gave more regular updates on the status of routes and the weather conditions. Just popped the tweets into Google translate! Do check in advance if you are travelling over winter (which includes up to the end of April) as the park isn't open all year round. The frozen lakes did look amazing though!

Took the long route hike (3 hours) in May 2023, led by a guide (Kanako from Okhotsk Jinendo) whom we booked with beforehand. Do check the website beforehand to see if you’ll need a guide to bring you via the “ground route” - this is dependent on the time of year.
Kana-san was able to accommodate my husband and me by delivering explanations in English as well, though the rest of the group understood Japanese. She was enthusiastic and tried to keep our spirits up even though the rain in the second half of the hike dampened our spirits somewhat and we did not see much wildlife. (No brown bears thankfully!)
Shiretoko National Park is a remote peninsula boasting abundant rare flora and fauna, along with breathtaking views of drift ice in the surrounding sea. It is an unspoilt natural wonderland that provides ample opportunities to explore and observe wildlife. However, visitors should note that certain areas may be closed due to the presence of bears. Despite this, many consider it one of the most beautiful places they have ever seen, with stunning scenery and favorable weather on the Utoro side during summer.

(Translated by Google) This is my second time to complete the five lakes loop itinerary on the upstream trails of the Shiretoko Five Lakes. This "second time" was because I encountered bad weather like a typhoon the previous time, and people are like this. After coming all the way to a famous scenic spot like Wuhu, how could we give up so easily? In the end, the result of braving the wind and rain was that I was in a state of embarrassment and the photos were not beautiful at all... This time, I finally took a photo of the scenery of the five lakes that I was quite satisfied with! Finally, my long-cherished wish came true!
Conclusion, the beautiful scenery definitely needs the help of good weather!
This time I specifically chose a Sunday time to go there, hoping to encounter a lot of people so as to avoid the danger of encountering brown bears! But after all, this is the far eastern region of Daodong. Even on a holiday, the idea of encountering many people is simply a luxury! It took me about 2 hours to stop and take photos nervously along the way, but I finally completed the journey safely!

(Translated by Google) I guess you could call it a weapon shop, an armor shop, and a tool shop to prepare the equipment for your Shiretoko trip (walking on the ground), in a Dragon Quest style😁
There are souvenir shops and eat-in shops, but there are restrictions on what food and drinks you can bring on the Shiretoko Goko Lakes ground walking course, so you'll have to buy tea and water here if necessary. We also sell bear bells, so if you forget to bring your own, feel free to purchase one.
The venison burger is also delicious to fill your stomach after a walk. Thanks to the calories I burned while walking, I can probably eat a burger with zero calories, I don't know.

There are also rare foods such as venison burgers.
When entering Shiretoko Goko Lakes, please receive an explanation here before entering.
In particular, there is a chance of encountering a brown bear, so he will give you lectures on countermeasures and information on where they appear.

Great content inside. Only 300Y entry. No English translations but they're not necessary. Good 45mins-1:30hrs.

Interesting displays especially related to Lantern Festival and weaving, but unfortunately no information in English. Much was self-explanatory. Lovely grounds with reconstructed stone circle, presumably the local Jomon site. Eagles in cages (possibly rescue birds as at least one had damaged wing). Alpine flowers. Monument to Tsugaru samurai who are commemorated by Lantern Festival.

Due to a schedule issue, unable to make it to Otoro, decide to visit the museum. Was surprised at the amount of content but there is no English translation so a lot of the meaning and background in the exhibits are lost on me. If you understand Japanese, the museum would probably be more educational to you.
My friend and I were joking that we are probably the first Singaporeans to visit this museum.

I came to Shari town for work, so I stopped by here.
The entrance fee was 300 yen for adults, but that ticket allowed us to visit both the museum and the memorial hall.
For a 300 yen museum, the exhibits were very elaborate and there were many stuffed animals.
There were many stuffed birds, and I was not good at birds, so I retired halfway through, but it may be very good for bird lovers.
The memorial hall had an exhibition of Okinawa and Neputa, and it was very powerful.
I was very satisfied.

There was a spacious parking lot for general cars other than those with wheelchair markings on the other side of the street.
There are a surprising number of stuffed animals on display, and the exhibits are designed to make it easy to understand the food chain and how it ultimately returns to the soil.
I felt that this is a museum where adults can learn more deeply.
For ¥300, you can also enter the adjacent memorial hall, where you can recreate the Hirosaki Nebuta festival in our sister city illuminated from the inside.
The coat of young birds and fawns does not deteriorate and remains fluffy and well preserved. Hats off to you.

(Translated by Google) There are various exhibits not only about Shiretoko's flora and fauna, but also about daily life. The quality of the stuffed animals is high, and there are a huge number of them, including those that have been preserved. I like birds of prey such as Steller's sea eagle and white-tailed eagle, so I'm glad to see that there are so many exhibits of them. Although it's small, I think it's worth seeing for the 300 yen admission fee.
It's about a 20-minute walk from Shiretoko-Shari Station, and local circulation buses also run, although they are infrequent.

Thank you to the curator.
I was allowed to tour for about an hour starting around 10 o'clock, but I was the only one for the entire time. It's a waste.
Please go.
In addition to detailed exhibits on the town's origins and industry, there are also very beautiful stuffed plants and animals from the mountains and sea.

What's more, there were some very impressive exhibits that I had never seen anywhere else, such as a eaten weasel returning to the earth and a fawn being made into a bear's clay bun. It has been introducing Shari from various angles since the Jomon period, and is very specialized. Admission fee: 300 yen. There is also a small museum shop.
