What an absolute treasure for the locals!
For having to work near Prince Rupert, it was going to be an overall new experience.
I was happy to have passed the Butze Rapid Trail sign a few times, and in passing, the curiosity finally peaked.
Went out for a mid to late day hike through the winding footpath, and it was an absolutely awe inspiring experience.
The pathway is well maintained / there were a couple steeper spots throughout the trail, but as long as you have some good tread on your soles, you should do fine.
The viewpoints, and vistas of the certain areas you get to see are breathtaking, especially when you get the sunset backing the view of the mountains and river / Rapids.
As an amateur hiker, I was expecting the journey (with photo opportunities) to take around 2-2.5hrs. I was able to take as many photos as my heart could desire, and stop at the amazing rest stops / side views that dot this trail in about 1.5hrs.
This is one spot in BC I will absolutely be bragging to all my friends about having the opportunity to visit.

There is wildlife,No dogs.

Short two mile hike that includes some moderate hills, with multiple side pathways excellent for exploration at your own pace through this beautiful temperate rainforest. Wonderful views of tidal areas
Pathway is nicely maintained to avoid flooding and mud

Lovely trail to walk. Nice loop - some incline but very doable with a moderate level of fitness. Trees, water, even a swing along the way!

My husband and I walked this short and beautiful trail. Lots of vegetation and big trees.

Nice relaxed walk that gets you right down to the water's edge. Definitely worth checking the tides ahead of time to max the epic-ness of the rapids.. I went at low tide and they were pretty chilled. Keep in mind this walk is one that I saw a lot of people doing as their 'daily loop' so it's not a tough slog by any stretch. What gave it 5 stars was all the info boards talking about the history and different tree/plant species.. Good place to test your tree knowledge!
Luke Robson — Google review
Relative to Tall Tree Trail, Butze Rapid Trail was well kept and easy-going. For the most part, the slopes were gentle and I didn't come across any significantly muddy areas. The walk through the trail was littered with bite-sized scenic stops, taking my girlfriend and I approximately 2.5 - 3 hours (including a picnic, and stopping every few minutes to take pictures) to complete.
Unlike Tall Tree Trail (where the hike sometimes got grueling and offered comparatively little to see until the end), Butze didn't have much of a singular breath-taking 'wow' moment to offer, and getting through it offered little in terms of feeling a sense of 'accomplishment'.
If you want a relaxing 'walk' type of a hike where you can stop every now and then to admire neat formations/views, this trail is perfect for that pace (especially if someone very young or not at peak health is involved). If you're looking for a more rigorous challenge and an epic view at the top, Tall Tree Trail would be a better match, and it's practically right across the street (*I wrote a review coupled with images for that one too, so feel free to check it out for comparison).
NOTE: I did not encounter any wild animals throughout either hike.

I absolutely love this trail - amazingly well-maintained, has such a variety of plants and little animals, multiple different biomes (rainforest, deserty and a beach!) while remaining fairly easy. 10/10 will definitely be back at some point in time (unless I die, haha)

It's a very nice walk the board says 2+ hours but it didn't take that long at a slow steady pace, guess it depends how much you stop. It's a well maintained trail and saw many people walking alone just make sure your always aware of your surroundings.

A very nice walk through the rainforest. Not too strenuous. Takes from an hour to two depending on pace or number of spots. About 5km.

Great easy hike. Couple hours of stroll but remember it’s a loop, downhill there and up hill back. There is a bathroom about 500m in. :)
The Museum of Northern British Columbia, housed in a building designed to resemble an indigenous longhouse, offers visitors a glimpse into the sustainable cultures and traditions of Northwest Coast peoples. The museum showcases ceremonial and cultural artifacts from Haida, Gitksan, and Tsimshian communities, along with extensive information about totem poles. A bookshop is available for those interested in further reading. Visitors can spend approximately 1.5 hours exploring the exhibits or move through them quickly if they prefer.
The Museum of Northern British Columbia in Prince Rupert, Canada, has a select collection of First Nations and other historical artifacts. The cedar building itself recreates a Northwest Coast longhouse. Tsimshian totem poles are the focal point of the Monumental Gallery. The museum showcases objects once used in Tsimshian potlatches including copper shields, bentwood boxes, laddels, bowls, and masks. Also among the artifacts is a Tsimshian ceremonial headdress made from mountain goat horns.

Our family really enjoyed the Museum of Northern British Columbia. We spent quite a bit of time looking at all the displays in the first room - the kids really enjoyed the weaving and seeing the intricate designs, as well as the carvings (the ceremonial frog was a favorite). Then we were very surprised to find the second room with all of the masks, head dresses, and ceremonial outfits. The painting "throw down" was also a hit.
We didn't expect to spend so much time looking at everything, so we had to skip some of our other plans for the day!

It's a must see in Prince Rupert, $8 for admission and you can return during the day if you still browsing by the time they close 12 pm-1 pm for lunch. Lots of interesting displays of the colourful history of Prince Rupert, the indigenous history to the influence of colonialism, interesting facts like how horizontal totems are rare and older form than the vertical, and Charles Hays, who was a figure in PR railway history, ended up on the illl fated Titanic.

This is a very nice museum showcasing the history and culture of the people, both past and present, who reside in this Northwestern side of Canada. Before the Europeans arrived here with their railways and steamships to harness the natural resources, it was largely the First Nations Peoples who inhabited this region. As a result much of their art forms and traditional crafts have been displayed. There is a curio and bookshop as well.
The museum is open on all days from 9 am to 5 pm in the summers. There is a token entry fee.

I spent over an hour looking at the exhibits. Pictures are allowed but no flash. $8 to get in. There's a nice gift shop as well. 4 stars because I paid full price but didn't have access to the gallery (renovations).

Really great just follow their directions on the front door about texting to let you in. It's closed otherwise. Beauty of it is, once you get in, it isn't crowded. Bought a nice tuque and card at gift shop. Contrast railway myseum with awesomely chatty person! The attendant in here seemed a little unfriendly but no big deal. Still gets full stars. Building fits the art. Go and you will be delighted.

Small but had some nice displays of local culture, even had a exhibit from a local artist that was nice.
Small, but very pretty. Tunnels make for easy access, or walk up the street to access from top. Benches to rest at, some bonsai to admire and flowers in bloom in early October.

Connected to the waterfront via a tunnel, and easily accessed from the courthouse, this park is beautiful and has some chess-tables. The gardens are visually stunning and the flower and plant variation seems excellent.

The Sunken Gardens Park is a very well maintained and peaceful area in which to spend some time. Once an ammunition dump, the gardens have been transformed into a nice area to stroll or sit and admire the nice plantings. This is not a huge garden but it is very well done and can be admired from two levels.

Our last stop was Prince Rupert,BC. We were amazing about this fishing port they get the freshest sea food and the people are very friendly. We walking and a local told us go the Sunken Garden Park it's short distance then we headed to the Sunken Gardens park. We went throught a tunnel then we saw the garden it was very nice knowing it was raining we look around very nice they told us the summer is the perfect time.

This is a very beautifully laid out garden full of beautiful flowers of many different colors. It is close to downtown Prince Rupert as well as the Cow Bay area near the harbor. There is an entrance through a tunnel which goes below the ground level, and another tunnel from where you can exit. Of course, you can avoid the tunnels by entering through the grounds of the Rupert Courthouse. It is good place to relax with a good book or to take a stroll through.

Excellent trail for those looking for an even keeled walk/run. There are a few ups and downs but nothing that would hinder the average walker. Suitable for all ages and skill levels for sure. I was short on time and so I only went about 15 minutes in, but it's got wide pathways. The grate on the bridges might be difficult for some devises but overall it appears accessible. Probably the best patio-view in western BC, with absolutely excellent beer to match. Staff are wonderful, knowledgeable and helpful! (I asked a question about a beer only to have the brewer show up to personally answer it!)
Dessert food, ginger beer, and the regular beer were all amazing.
The patio is dog-friendly, so bring your best friend!

It was a brief experience but I do not recommend. When trying to order they did not respect my culture and I was told my people were not welcome there. If other free native Canadians are looking for a watering hole I do not suggest supporting this business as they support and project discrimination reminiscent of the residential school days. I’m sure this beautiful town has other more accommodating venues that respect their guests.

Though I don't drink beer I wanted to visit this brewry as it just looked cool. Went on August 27th and the atmosphere was great. I was given a few tasters of what they make and actually liked the Scurcy Dog Spruce Ale. BUT I ordered the Sea Cider which they don't make, but is still made in BC. Service was great, love the signs and picked up a sweater!

The Gillnetter Golden Ale is a nice substitute to Newcastle's Brown Ale. Top notch ale in my opinion and would be my regular if I could buy it in Victoria. I'd like to see this sold down south and regret not stocking up before heading out of town.

RACIST. I'd heard they have a bad attitude to people of colour, and my partner is half native, so I never planned to go to this establishment. It does look like a nice new location and we were invited to join a friend, so gave them a chance last night. The bearded owner/manager at the register had an odd demeanour, directed his invitations to come back again at the blonde male in our party only, and should probably not work in service. The pizza came burnt.

Awesome pizza, had vegan option (shown in picture)! Great wine as well for a brewery. Views of the water are stunning from the patio
Tyler Diedrick — Google review
It was a little dark inside, some games to play. A great West facing entrance that's just begging for a patio for that afternoon sun, but alas we are putting chairs by the entrance to get a taste of beer and sun! I tried a citrus blonde ale named Vitamin Sea, I thought it might be low on IBU, like most blonde ales, but it was actually a bit hoppy. Now I asked for a less hoppy beer and was recommended the "scurvy dog spruce ale". Now with spruce in the name I thought this would be all about hops, but not at all. Very pleasant. A definite all day beer. Also tried the "all inclusive" sour. This is a great beer for those that like sours, or might want to try them. Not to much pucker power in this one, just a nice easy drinking beer with a twist! Take home bottles were actually better value than glasses at the brewery, don't necessarily understand why. 480ml glasses were the same price as the 650 ml bottles in the fridge ($6.50-$6.75)
Dale M — Google review
The bartender was absolutely amazing and had great knowledge of the beers. Overall awesome experience and will definitely be returning before leaving Prince Rupert. The brewery is located with a beautiful view of the harbour and as the evening fog drifted in, it was easy to see how the Foggy Harbour NEIPA got its name.
Lovely trail to the top where you have a good view of the surrounding. Muddy when you get higher up but it's PR, everything is wet so be prepared. Also because everything is wet, the forest is so green, from top to bottom. There are also mushrooms everywhere when we visited in September. Highly recommended.

[Jan 15, 2018, ~4.5 hrs there & back including a rest + small meal at the peak]
It isn't "Swiss Alps pretty", but the views were pretty decent. This was my girlfriend's first "real" hike to a mountain-top; sadly, we're both a little out of shape, but this trail was definitely still doable for both of us.
We encountered a few areas that were super slippery, but [to be fair] the past week has been pretty rainy and wet (this was arguably the first clear day). These areas need more gravel or material to hold the ground together, because the trail becomes steep mush in these [short] stretches.
An early [morning] start, a walking stick (incredibly helpful for overcoming unruly areas), and a healthy fresh snack with plenty of hydrating drinks are key to maximizing this hiking experience; good company can definitely add to the experience. :)
NOTE: We didn't get the opportunity to slay Mount Hays because we ran out of time, but from what I could tell, the path seemed somewhat [relatively] unclear.

Fantastic, but challenging hike! Don't let the proximity to town or the short distance trick you into thinking this will be an easy walk in the woods. Boots, water & snacks are must-haves. We went in mid-August and conditions were awesome, but wet weather will make it way muddier (+ bugs) which might be less fun. We really sweat during the first half. The terrain is rugged and the switchbacks are short. I was relieved that it mellowed out a little somewhere around 2.5 km. Don't worry about the steps at the top, they're gentle and actually pretty fun. The views at the top are spectacular (keep walking after the bench) and we had the added bonus of feasting on delicious huckleberries. We packed bear spray, but didn't see any evidence of bears. Our adventure lasted 3 hours, total.

Pacific Mariners Memorial Park is a well-preserved public park that has been open since 1990. It boasts beautiful gardens, an excellent playground for children aged 2-10, and features antique ship parts and memorials to fishermen. The City ensures the playground is maintained, while funding comes from the local Lions club. Additionally, it's an ideal spot for family picnics as it's situated on the oceanfront and only a short walk away from several restaurants.

Playground is kept up by the City and funded by the local Lions club, pretty fantastic place for the 2-10 year old crowd. Great place for a family picnic, right on the ocean, a stumble away from the micro brewery, and 4 minute walk from at least a half dozen places to eat. If the weather is nice, this is the place to be.

A small but well-maintained public park. The waterfront exposure and cleanliness of the park are great things while considering visiting. I think the Kasu Maru-a small Japanese boat is another attraction of this park other than the spectacular view from this site.

The Pacific Mariners Memorial Park and surrounding area was the highlight of my visit to Prince Rupert. It's right beside Cow Bay, so it's a great place to walk with a coffee to see some amazing views after visiting the nautical information centre and before walking the docks to look at the nearby boats.
The 27-foot Kazu Maru is the centre object of display at the memorial park. A plaque describes the ghost ship’s strange journey as having a “mystic quality,” but the full story can be read on the informational sign.
On September 26th, 1985 Kazukio Sakamoto left Owase for a day of fishing. In March of 1987, a government patrol vessel near Skidegate Inlet on Haida Gwaii spotted the boat overturned, barnacle-enshrouded, and about to be smashed into the rocks. They rescued the boat and brought it to Prince Rupert. When the Kazu Maru was identified, it surprised people to learn it was from Owase, Prince Rupert’s official sister city since 1968.
The boat was restored and put on display at the cannery. In 1990, it was moved into a Japanese-style shrine at Prince Rupert's new memorial park. Sakamoto’s widow Eiko, family members, and others from Owase came to BC to attend the opening ceremony. The Japanese delegation offered prayers and helped bless the shrine, which is dedicated to all of those who have been lost at sea.

This is a nice park along the waterfront of Prince Rupert between the marina and the museum of North West British Columbia, on the Cow Bay Road. We visited Prince Rupert in July 2019, and I would go for a morning walk. There are some symbolic monuments like an old anchor and the statue of a seaman. Had the pleasure to meet Nancy and all the animals at the rehab shelter today and it was a one of a kind experience. She welcomed us with open arms and is a wealth of knowledge about her animals and their needs. Nancy and her late husband, Gunther, have built such a beautiful reserve for animals in need of care. Everything is built and done with so much care and love for the animals, and she continues to work tirelessly to provide a home for these animals until they are able to be released. The website has some conflicting information about when their hours are for public viewing-1 page says they are open 1x annually whereas another page says they are open after 3pm on Sat/Sun. I would recommend giving her a call prior to arriving to set up a time and give her a heads up.

This is a really neat location. Nancy and her recently passed husband built it behind their home as a passion project. She told us that they treat somewhere around 800 animals a year, operating on donations and charity. She is willing to let visitors come see the wildlife in her care. It's a very eclectic facility and doesn't look like much when you drive up but the generous hearts make it special. We're glad we took the time to stop by

The website said open to visitors after 3 on Saturdays, so we went. I don't think they get too many visitors as they were really surprised when we showed up. But Nancy took us around and we saw the eagles, ravens, owls, ducks, and the crowd that were all being cared for. It was raining gently while we were there, but that didn't dampen any of our enthusiasm during this experience. Definitely a highlight for us!

Departing the BC Ferries terminal in Rupert was night and day compared with the reverse voyage from Bear Cove (Port Hardy).
You have a 30 minute check-in window and there were only 2 cars ahead of us when we arrived. Check-in was super smooth and easy and quick. This terminal is very well organized!
Yes, you do have to then wait a while to board. But unlike Bear Cover, Rupert actually has PA system and uses it so you know what is going on and you know when you should return to your vehicle.
Yes, most vehicles have to back onto the ferry, that's jus the way its done with this "door-at-one-end" ferry. It's either back on... or back off. We were a small car so were able to drive on and nestle on the small upper car deck at the front of the ferry.
The cafeteria hot-food selection on board the ferry is limited. Breakfast was not appetizing. If you can, bring your own food.
Electrical outlets in the passenger area are few and far between. There is a charging station shelf near the front of the ferry. Near the cafeteria, if you look high on the wall opposite the check-out, you might find an electrical outlet. Same in the rest of the cafeteria - but you have to look high up and behind the curtains.
The cabins were comfortable but the temperature control is not within your control. And yes, they do make PA announcements that pipe into the cabin. Highly recommend getting a cabin and reserving it in advance. Or bring your own air mattress and camp out in the passenger lounge area with the folk you go to the intermediate stops.
On the whole, the Inside Passage trip is amazing. The terminal experience set the tone. Prince Rupert terminal was a 5 star experience and Bear Cove was a 2 star experience.

The views and scenery arebeyond amazing! The big downside is that our dog had to stay on the car or car deck for almost 19 hours!! Every 2 hours or so, you can walk them between the cars but this is not satisfactory. Fake turf to pee on, or letting us off at a stop half way should be done. Kudos to Amber a BC ferries worker who kindly che ked on our dog. $850 for an experience of a lifetime was worth it.

Verschrikkelijke Trip!

Terrible Trip!
You spend 16 hours on such a boat without telephone reception and WiFi!
Little comfort, food and drinks you have to pay extra on top of the already expensive trip. You have to be there 2 hours in advance, so you simply spend 1 very long day on this boat trip. You can't do much during the trip, when the weather is nice you can look outside, but then 16 hours is far too long. In bad weather you will have it even worse than a long plane trip.
During the trip you won't see any animals, or even a few, so you don't have to do it for this. Highly recommended if you're going on holiday. If you have to make the crossing for business purposes, it is possible, but it is certainly not a fun boat trip for a fun boat trip!!

Organized mayhem! Only a few cars go forward in the ferry. Otherwise, it's backyards because ferry has one door only. We took a cabin for night trip. It's small, not well ventilated. It was warm for us. The intercom announcements are heard in the cabin while you are trying to get to sleep. Cabins have showers, towels provided.

Having to turn up at 5:30 AM for the 7:30 AM sailing seems a little inefficient and unnecessary. Seems like this could be optimized. I'm not boarding a plane or doing a passport check. Although a plane might be cheaper :-) Note: They will want to see a legal ID before letting you on. We posted a picture-less BC medical card for our non-adult daughter which they accepted.
On the ferry -- for which the ticket cost well over $1,000 -- there is no WiFi! :-( And I reserved a seat in the exclusive lounge but the seat mechanism doesn't work.

I'm giving them 5 Stars because they deserve it. Community workers, friends and professionalism......always smooth sailing with Northern BC Ferries, as those Southern BC Ferries SUCK !

Prince Rupert - Port Hardy:
Very long waiting periods, no wildlife to see from the deck late June, extremely poor food in the cafeteria- the restaurant was closed - very good cabins, though - be sure to have one - and bring your own food!

Way too overpriced for the experience given. I paid 800 dollars and they don't even have WiFi on the boat or a smoking area. They lack in offering comfort on this boat. The chairs are alright, but not for 16 hrs straight. Yes, you can get a cabin but you have to prebook these and you need to pay even more which is ridiculous. They should come standard for these long fairs, given the price payed.
The service on the boat is alright, should be because you can eat in a 'restaurant'. A restaurant where your average -not even that good tasting- cheeseburger costs 14 dollars.
Bring a blanket or at least a sweater because they crank up the AC very high and it's freezing after sitting still for a long time.

Parked in lot overnight while waiting to board and early ferry. Staff were friendly and helpful.
Always a calm place, I’d prefer this over a busy city mall any day. To be more specific, they have an amazing in- restaurant called Dumela, dollarama customer service is always top notch. Same with Walmart. Please come to our local Polyco Mall!

Dollar store, marks, per store, source, bank, piercing and alternative jewlery and 2 clothing shops. There is a great childrens motorized rental place in a small knook downstairs. You can ride a mechnical scooter with an animal skin. Very cool! Up to 300lbs so good for your inner child as well. 😊

Start here for your interesting walk through town and realize why this town is called Podunk. 2 possibly 3 stores in this mall are actually interesting, then your typical chain stores lacking product selection. Oh the sidewalk in front of the is caving in . Making the walk a little more interesting. Maybe that's why the locals drink there.

Rupert Square Shopping Center is also known as the Rupert Square Mall in Prince Rupert. The most prominent and popular store here is the Walmart of the small town. Other useful stores for the tourists are the Dollarama store and the Shopper's Drug Mart. It is located in Downtown Prince Rupert just off the Yellowstone Highway. One can get a good view of the harbor and the Rotary Waterfront Park. Parking is available in the compound.

Worst parking lot layout ever. Hard for trucks and larger cars to park. Parking should be laid out on angles like Safeway.

The staff at the Walmart are very friendly polite and helpful .
Great little mall
