The La Aurora Zoo is a beautiful and well-maintained zoo in Guatemala City that features a great variety of native and exotic animals. The zoo is especially interesting for children, as it includes exhibits with activities such as animal demonstrations and games.
Surprisingly, the zoo is very well taken care of and has Disney World level. Among all zoos in the Americas that I visited, the ones in the USA sometimes are in the same level of the Zoo in Guatemala City. Congrats Guatemala, for having this precious place available for your population and for visitors to see!

Wow is 2022 and the zoo looks amazing. It was nice but now is wow! The price is more than Worthy Q40 adult. Has a lot of new aninals amd has been renovates, a lot of new designs and parking under roof. I love it. I give a 100%

Such a fun zoo! Great large and well kept animal enclosures and a huge variety of animals. We were so impressed by how well done the entire zoo was - landscaping, enclosures, variety, theming, it was all very nice.
The one thing that keeps it from 5 stars is the crowds. There are a lot of people who go. Whether it's school groups or tourists or locals there was just a lot of people, but it's understandable why everyone goes because it's so fun and a bargain of a deal to go. Don't miss the chance if you are in Guatemala city.

I've visited Zoos in Hawai'i, Chile, Costa Rica, and parts of the US. This one in Guatemala is better than all of them, really. It's well kept, has a wide variety of species, a playground for the kids to run around, and even a food court. Best part? The entry fee is less than USD$6. A must go if you're visiting Guatemala City.

A wide variety of animals. It's sad to see them in captivity, but it was cool to see hippos and rhinos

The zoo is beautiful and very much up to standard with other zoos I have visited in the USA. The only thing I wish they had more of is concession stands, I suggest you bring your own water and a few snacks to keep hydrated because there are few options throughout the zoo.

awesome.zoo. Exotic animals that I have even found hard to find in US Zoos. Rhinos so close..."Black Panther" was very active... The mix of the elephants and the gazelles I think they were was so safari like...Peacocks just walking around free at the establishment was fun, but my fave was seeing the baby hippo with the adult hippo and the Lizard just walking up to them.. Really great zoo...They even had a playground for the kids.

Amazing enclosures with healthy happy animals. Great views to see them all and well priced food within the park. If you have some time to kill before a flight, take your family here. Just don't forget to pay for parking when you buy your tickets

Amazing experience, this was my first time going to the zoo since they brought new species, nice place to visit with family and friends, you can buy food, they have restaurants. To be honest I loved this place. The only bad thing is they close at 4pm and restaurants doesn't provide service at that time to take.

Our visit to the zoo in Guatemala was a delightful experience for my two kids and me. The animals appeared to be well cared for, contributing to a pleasant atmosphere.
By the end of our visit, the kids were happily tired from all the excitement. Highly recommended for families with children visiting the area!
Conveniently situated in Zone 10, it's close to 'El Museo del Mino,' the National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, along with other must-see attractions, making it a fantastic addition to your itinerary.
The IRTRA Mundo Petapa amusement park is perfect for family fun in Guatemala City. There are high-quality rides and attractions, as well as specialized playgrounds and a zoo for children. The park also has an outdoor pool, a theater with free performances, and much more. The only theme park in the city, it's a great place to spend the day with kids.
Today 12/02/2023 was the 1st of the 15 days that the park will be open until 9 pm and on Saturdays as today there will be a firework show at 8:45 pm...

Starbucks is a coffee chain known for its signature roasts, light bites and WiFi availability. The company has locations in Seattle, Washington; Guatemala City, Guatemala; and Ciudad Cayala, Mexico. Friendly service and adequate flavor make Starbucks a good choice for coffee seekers in each of these locations. However, more seating and cleaned tables would make the coffee shop even more inviting.
Nice Starbucks, but is unbelievable to me that they don't have cream and half and a half available for drinks, the selection of coffee beans they offer for espresso or lattes are not disclosed on the menu. I ordered the best coffee bean selection according to the server and of course often a long wait, she forgot to add the requested milk to my coffee. I enjoyed it anyway!

This modern museum documents different stages of Maya culture and history, with a large collection of Guatemalan and ancient Mayan art. It is located on the campus of Fransisco Marroquin University in Guatemala City.
First time visit. Despite its small size, the museum has an impressive collection of original Mayan clay sculptures and modern line drawings. I appreciate the museum's layout, the description of pieces in English, the quality and breadth of the collection. You could easily spend a few hours here if you're really into Mayan art, and if you're not, a quick walk through might change your mind!
Q15 extra to take photos inside. Worth it to me.

Lovely museum with a special section on ancient Mayan women. Price is 45 quetzales for entry which is very reasonable. You need to take ID to get through the security gate to enter the complex.

Good collection of Mayan art, displayed in the context of their culture, evolution, calendar and trade. Especially convenient is the fact that it's literally right next door to the Ixchel museum which itself is pretty nice. This museum, too, similar to the Ixchel museum, roughly follows chronological order for articles.
The entrance fee is reasonable. They don't let you carry the bag inside but have a place where they keep it for you. A water bottle is allowed inside. There's an extra charge if you want to take photos inside the museum.

Oakland Mall is a large, well-polished shopping mall with over 200 stores and restaurants. It's also home to a movie theater and several specialty shops.
Incredible place. It has a wide variety of stores and restaurants for every taste and every budget. After completing the renovations, I think it will be the biggest mall in Central America and even Latin America. There is something interesting for everyone and whatever you are looking for, you most likely find it here.
Erick Portillo — Google review
Classy mall with a wide selection of shops but they should add a shop dedicated to travel (the selection of suitcases was poor) and the regular food court has the usual fast-food joints. Maybe take example on Ala Moana's Shopping Center's Food court in Honolulu. There's a restaurant section but nothing in between. I love the fragrant air in the mall. Excellent choice of fragrance.
The movie theater could offer a broader selection of movies.

Place is lovely.
The Museo Ixchel del Traje Indígena is a museum dedicated to traditional Guatemalan clothing and textiles. The museum has an extensive collection of garments, folk dances, arts and crafts from the highlands of Guatemala. There is also an art gallery downstairs, a children's section, a cafe, library and shop selling textiles made by locals weavers.
This place in guatemala has variety of Mayan customs and dresses. Is beautiful. It has beautiful art and is full of vivid traditional expositions. Every tourist should go and not miss.

What a lovely museum.
Tons of textiles to admire.
Learned about the materials used, dying process as well as weaving and the regional differences if textiles.
There is no AC so be prepared.
I was not uncomfortable and it was 28 Celsius that day.
You're also not allowed to drink inside the exhibits.

New must see exhibits blending beautiful antique Mayan pottery with the oldest of the museum textiles.
And a wonderful new wing with a time capsule of mayan textiles evolution through time.
Museo Ixchel really hit the mark this time. Museogrgraphy and lighting is hugely improved. A great new experience. Highly recommended!

Exhaustive collection of textiles depicting diversity, history, and evolution from very early on (early Mayan) till modern times. The collection is truly impressive and it takes at least 2-3 hours even if you're skipping a few articles in-between. English translation is provided along with the Spanish description so that's a great help for international visitors.
The entrance fee is reasonable and the museum store downstairs has a good collection of hupile and other artifacts for purchase at relatively reasonable prices. Even with the slightly higher prices, you know that the museum is supporting the local artisan community.
The museum itself is located inside the university campus which is very green and clean. The staff is helpful too. I'd definitely recommend a visit here if you're visiting Guatemala City.

I love going to museums, especially when it’s about a different culture that I am from 😊 the museum is not that big but it’s definitely worth going! You can see so many interesting things, such as traditional clothes that was worn back in the day, pottery, paintings, etc. They also have a small souvenir shop in the museum, which had very reasonable prices. Staff was super friendly and willing to help whenever we asked questions.

Plaza Fontabella is a sophisticated shopping center with fountains and courtyards that features upscale restaurants and shops. It is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, who appreciate its elegant architecture and convenient location in the heart of the city.
I had the opportunity to live here for a few months, and I must say it was a good experience. Fontabella is a gated community that offers a wide array of services, ranging from restaurants to shops. It's a safe, albeit small, area where one can stroll around and indulge in retail therapy. I came to Guatemala for business, and I needed to stay for long periods of time in the country. Initially, I was staying at a hotel while working abroad, but I eventually decided to rent an apartment in Guatemala City, finally opting for Fontabella, and the convenience and comfort of having my own space were unmatched; it includes different types of restaurants and shops, as well as other services, which I find it quite convenient. What is more important, I greatly appreciate the maintained level of security in the area, which is crucial in a country like Guatemala.
Overall, I strongly recommend Fontabella for those seeking temporary accommodation in Guatemala for an extended period, may be for business or other reasons.

This mall is very fancy, and it's in one of the most exclusive areas in the city. But my experience was terrible, I tried to use the bathrooms and let tell I was awful, they were super disgusting and without water. I went to a bookstore inside the mall and well those bathrooms were a bit better still not very clean but al least they're was water. The restaurant are kind of expensive but, the food is good.

Yes, it's a mall. Reminded me of the Plaza in Kansas City - a recreation of a Mediterranean style village with eateries, bookstores, and many fountains. In this part of the city, where foot traffic is rare, it's nice to see people strolling around and having fun. I fell in love with the bookstore there, independent and buzzing with activity, hence the 4th star in my rating.

Central Market (Mercado Central) is an indoor large shopping area located right in the middle of the historic center of Guatemala City (Zone 1). However, some of the same merchants sell products outdoors right in front of it. It is a three level shopping area but is not visibly seen as a large building. In fact most of these three stores are almost underground so don’t be looking for a tall three story building. The market is located at the rear of the Metropolitan Cathedral and this is how we found it. You will see a lot of vendors selling diverse merchandise and then follow the steps down to observe colorful and lively stands with fruits and vegetables, meat, spices, teas and coffee, you name it. Vendors in the market also sell items ranging from handmade items to mass produced souvenirs, knickknacks, art pieces. It was our favorite place due to its atmosphere and vitality, i.e., a place for people watching, buying souvenirs, trying different exotic treats and unknown foods, or simply exploring the shopping scene in Guatemala City. It falls into a “MUST visit” category in the city and of course traversing those these very colorful and joyful rows and rows of produce and goods is FREE unless you decide to purchase an item/ pay for food (and bring CASH). The market has three parts to it - grocery items, prepared food/restaurant area, and souvenirs/ knick knacks. Food items range from locally sourced to freshly baked right at the market. Dining is available for those who want to enjoy a prepared meal or sample unique varieties of tea, pastries, meats, cheese. The top level is the best area to find artisans hard at work. Tourists may find jewelry, pottery, clothing, and leather items. It is an overall rewarding experience and is highly recommended. Allocate somewhere between half an hour to few hours to visit the place.

I wish I would’ve came here my first night in GC to buy produce and meats. This place has everything - your souvenir stores, meat markets, produce stands, seasoning sections, food court with breakfasts and lunches… EVERYTHING!
Natalie Maritz — Google review
For an authentic market experience, visit Mercado Central. You will find the best prices for souvenirs and any other items you may be looking for including fresh fruit, flowers, candy and everything else in between. Just be warned that some food stalls may charge you higher prices as a tourist which was the case at Rosita's restaurant stall (My mom did recommend "Dona Mela" but unfortunately they were too packed) and most stalls may not be veggie friendly since this isn't common in Guatemala. (I did say, "Authentic", after all.)
If you're looking for a safe area to stay in Guatemala City, Zona Viva (also known as Zone 10) is a good option. It's advisable to confirm with locals before exploring the area at night, but overall it has a reputation for safety. To get around the city, using Uber can be an efficient and reliable choice.

Nacional Museum of Mayan Art: Archeology and Ethnology
The National Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology in Guatemala is home to an impressive collection of Maya artifacts as well as ethnological specimens from throughout Guatemalan history. The museum strives to provide education on the country's rich cultural heritage.

Amazing museum!! We couldn't believe that it was free given how modern and clean the museum felt, and considering how cool and vast the collection was. An absolute must to get some background information and learn more about Mayan culture before visiting any of the ruins! We had limited time during our visit and had to choose between this and the Popol Vuh museum, and we're happy we opted for this one!

I've been to a few Maya museums and they are all different yet so interesting. You might think that seeing one is seeing all of them but this is not the case, again in this museum something new and exciting. I really liked the modeled depictions of the life of Mayas in different life aspects, there is a beautiful mural inside, beautiful textiles and I really liked the art by Mena which ads a beautiful freshness to the museum! Although some areas would need a better lightning, there is a beautiful outside area where you can see some exibits in natural light! It's a clean and a professional place. Keep in mind that the price for foreigners is 60 Q and for locals 5 Q.

Not huge, but well done and offers stunning examples of ancient carvings, artifacts, and art including beautiful murals and more recent modern folklore, clothing, and more.

Impressive feat of cartography in the heart of Guatemala City. After spending 3 weeks travelling the country, we were thrilled to see all the places we visited on the map. Lovable, English speaking guide and police officer Luis brought the whole experience to life. We left feeling happy to have met so many nice people in this country. Doing the tour with Luis is not to be missed!

This is a great place to start you tour of Guatemala city. This a 1:2000 scale map of Guatemala was created 100 yrs ago to teach the people about their land. I was so impressed by this body of work and to think it was done 100 yrs ago even made it more amazing. It's 25Q per person for foreign nations and you get a paper with a history and explanation of some of the none obvious features of the structure. It definitely worth a visit.

A wonderful place to round out a trip to Guatemala. Coming here after travelling the country was a great way to mentally revisit all the wonderful places and marvel at the variety of geology and geography of the country. 25Q entry. I walked there since I had time. But most will probably take a taxi. Not much else around that part of the city.

The map very nice to see. It's gives a nice, new perspective, in my case, after travelling around the country a bit, but it would be nice to see it before starting a trip too! The 25q entrance for foreigners, I think, is a bit much, but there are bathrooms with paper and the staff was nice. There was kind of a mini info museum, but some of the info was blocked by some set aside tables and chairs.
Also the walk from the centre on the sixth avenue (right? Not street?) is simple and considered safe.

Honestly, the pictures and descriptions online don’t do it justice. My wife and I visited given we had time to spare in Guatemala City, but thank goodness we did! This topographical layout of Guatemala and the surrounding nations is truly astonishing. It provides a fun environment to talk through and visualize the remainder of your journey in the beautiful country that is Guatemala. Highly recommend paying a visit. It’s around 25Q a person to enter.

I really nice place to visit if you want to learn about the geography of Guatemala. It is quite big around 50 square meters. The cost is $3 for Turists. The map has over 100 years old and it has being well keep, painted and with security.

Classified as National Heritage, they have renovated and painted it. The entry fee for nationals costs Q5 and Q25 for tourists. The map is over 100 years old but the condition is excellent. There is Esquilandia with amusement rides and the traditional Giant Landslide. The only problem is parking since there is no secure parking but you have to leave your car on the surrounding streets. It is worth visiting and taking the children to see the topography of our beautiful country.

Very cool. A pretty massive relief map of Guatemala. You get an incredible sense of the size and geography of the country. The lowlands in the north, the interior highlands, the lakes and rivers. I'd totally recommend. We had a guide, which was excellent.

It also has beautiful views of a forest in the background with the names of different marimb players... they even lent me a shady one, there was a lot of sun... without a doubt a place that should be known to see our Guatemala in small form.

This shall be the first site to visit when you get to Guatemala City! It's the oldest large scale relief map in the world, built between 1904 and 1905. You can tour the whole country in just one day! It's located near the Plaza de la Constitución in zone 1, so you can take the Transmetro to get there or go by foot, it's a very nice walk. You can also check out the Sonorous Forest, that surrounds the map, there are -until today- 105 trees of Hormigo, each one planted in honor of a musician or compositor of marimba, our national instrument, that is specifically made with the timber of this tree. Besides, it's a safe place. Contact us if you don't want to miss any detail of this Guatemalan Wonder. Availability is from Tuesday to Sunday, from 8am to 4pm.

El lugar es bonito y agradable ideal como para realizar un día de campo en el área verde que tiene. Si quieren comer algo deben comprar afuera ya que adentro no cuenta con ningún tipo de tiendas.

The Children's Museum of Guatemala is a place where children can learn about Guatemala in an interactive and fun way. There are exhibits on everything from bubbles to earthquakes, to a grocery store and ambulance. The museum is family-friendly, with activities designed to be both fun and educational. Kids will enjoy learning about Guatemala while exploring the sights and sounds of the museum.
Amazing experience at the museum. We were the first to arrive in the morning and we were assigned two helpers. They showed my kids the exhibits and played with them for almost the full three hours. They are currently doing construction in October 2023, but it still was huge and in the three hours we had we only got through 75%.

Why is this an awesome children's museum? The exhibitions are high quality and educational. The area is super clean and nicely organized with both indoor and outdoor space. The best part is the service. Each attraction has an employee who facilitates child interaction with the subject. All of the employees were like teachers. They take their jobs seriously and will teach your kids something. Truly priceless and a must visit for families.

A diamond in the rough! Such a fun place we would absolutely go again. Great activities for kids from small to 12 or 14 years old. Even as parents we had a great time and the employees were so kind. Definitely plan to go if you are in Guatemala city.
Location: Easy to get to just down the street from La Aurora Zoo (which is also a must).
Cleanliness: clean, open, air conditioned and fun. Hand sanitizer stations all over and clean bathrooms
Cost: the entrance fee is completely worth it and very reasonable for all the fun activities.
Customer service: The people who work there are so kind and welcoming. The proactively asked if we wanted to do activities and they talked and taught the kids looking directly at then. It was so great.
We definitely would go again and wished we had even more time to explore!

I enjoyed this museum quite a bit. We went around 3:30pm and they close at 4:30pm, but the museum was fairly empty so it was plenty of time to enjoy all the attractions they offered. My kids enjoyed the playground the most! Would definitely recommend if you're looking for something fun to do with the kids!

I go here for very specific reasons as there is not a large selection of stores but there is a short string of satisfying restaurants which will always be full on weekends at all hours. So, if you are looking for a place to have a meal, a pint or brunch, this is a good option for the area. It has a nice open courtyard and a unique area for children in the front.

Too artsy. But I preferred its non-cliché chic as upscale rendered. May be viewed as overbearing to the beliegered (mind) within the time of visit. So was the case when I got to see it at a more purposeful perspective this 2nd or 3rd time around; although I was the one lucid.

Iglesia Yurrita, a Catholic church with Gothic features and European architectural influences, is renowned for its ornate design. Although access is limited to the exterior due to surrounding fences, it remains a stunning example of traditional Catholic architecture. The church attracts many photographers due to its picturesque appeal and easy accessibility. Overall, Iglesia Yurrita is an impressive building that stands out for its beauty and historic significance.
One of the most beautiful churches in Guatemala city.
Alfredo Mejía — Google review
The church was built in 1929 by the Yurrita family. It is not a typical tourist attraction in the city but if in the area, it may be worth stopping by because the architectural style is different from the churches in the area. It is very ornate with blood-red tower and stonemasonry. The architecture shows a mix of styles from neo-Gothic to baroque. The interior colors and artwork are as spectacular as the exterior. Visitors can tour the church in about 15 to 20 minutes. The entry is free and visitors are welcomed. It is located on the busy avenue.
