Cheetahs Rock is an accredited educational wildlife rescue and conservation center on Zanzibar with a focus on cheetahs. Visitors can interact with the animals in the open, either rescued or donated, and see dozens of rescued animals living in natural habitats. The team is devoted and helpful, taking pride in their work.
My advice for anyone who's traveling to zanzibar: leave cheetah's rock till the last day, because nothing will impress you after this wonderful visit!
We thought it was expensive at first... WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!
I've never imagined myself petting a cheetah or a tiger. The rush is amazing.
I've never liked the zoo and the concept of sad animals in cages, cheetah's rock is the complete opposite. The animals are happy, well taken care of and friendly.
The staff is adorable! You will have the time of your life.
Last but not least, when they offer you champagne... take it! It's a very smart move and you will definitely need it.

I really loved this hands-on experience that was all about the animals. I worried about the animals before I came, concerned about their interaction with tourists - but its very clear how much these animals are loved and cared for.
My husband asked what my favorite part of the experience was. That's a hard question to answer because they were all so special in their own way!
Feeding the young lions was really cool. Sitting with the bushbabies while they crawled around was fantastic. I couldn't wipe the smile from my face. The lemurs are so active and fun. And of course sitting with a cheetah 🐆 All of it was great!
I highly recommend supporting Cheetah's Rock with a visit while you are in Zanzibar.

A unique experience! You immediately notice how much passion the employees put into the rescued animals. And all the animals there are really incredible and sweet. Being able to pet a cheetah is generally a once in a lifetime experience. I can absolutely recommend it with a clear conscience, it is a must-see.

This is a nice place to see different exotic animals up close but if you are expecting a lot of interaction than you are at the wrong place!
Here they like to talk about the animal, it's sad story and the species struggles in the wilderness. So if you are an animal fanatic and really interested in facts than this is the place.
Furthermore this place is extremely commercial which is a big disappointment: the price is very high just to see animals an hear their long stories. Their tours are also made of about 40 people so when you finally get the chance to touch an animal you only have about one second.
I've visited a number of other animal rescues in Africa that were way better: less commercial, a lot more natural and with a lot more interaction.
I've gone home with mixed feelings after my visit and hope this review will help someone!

It was amazing. Don’t go here expecting a zoo, but you can really get close to some animals you would otherwise never encounter (especially taking photos sitting next to a real cheetah, touching its fur in the process is very unique) and you learn a lot about the sad stories of some of the animals.
The entire team is really nice, they really care about the animals and the whole project is funded through visitors‘ fees. The tour is absolutely worth the price tag, the animals are cared for in a really nice manner and the aim to rescue animals and give them a place to live a good life (and perhaps be released when they are ready) is really worthy of support.
If you want to experience wildlife and help animals in need, this is the place to go - you’ll leave with a lot of new experiences and a feeling of having done something completely new.

On various forums you will find a lot of different discussions about this place. It is not my job to convince you of either side of the argument. For me, visiting this place was an amazing lifelong experience. It is worth being in a place where, in my opinion, animals are cared for with a big heart and their stories are told with passion. It doesn't matter if you go on safari to the mainland afterwards because it's a different experience. We were picked up by a car from Paje and driven to Cheetah's Rock. We took one person along the way. On the spot, we sign a statement that we will not blame the resort for any damage to health blown up by animals. Sounds serious but the crew cares about our safety very much and they have a lot of experience. During your stay at the resort, the staff makes sure that we take a picture with the animal ... we don't have to worry about it. During the four-hour stay, we will get to know the stories of our heroes, we will be able to touch most of them or feed and meet the amazing founder and her crew. The cost of the Great Wildlife Tour is USD 160. You can say it's a lot but remember that you are helping to keep these animals and besides, the safari costs several times more and you will never be as close to wild animals as in Cheetah's Rock.

Amazing interactive animal sanctuary. The staff were knowledgeable and professional. Their love and respect for the animals was evident at all times. They included everyone and ensured we all had the best time. The animals are obviously well taken care and it supports a great cause… An experience not to be missed while in Zanzibar !

A good experience with well treated animals - they are loved and well taken care of. You have a choice to encounter the animal and feed them. The guides give a lot of information and ready to answer questions you may have. It’s a worth a visit if you love animals and have time. The tour is 4ish hours long so ensure you’ve eaten before and wear comfortable shoes/clothes.
It was lovely to have transport included in the price as it’s out of the way.

We are gratefull that thanks to you we were able to fulfill our dream of being able to spend a little time with the animals we love so much.
We were impressed by the way they are cared for and protected and also very happy that there are still people dedicating their lives to saving these animals.
For these things we thank you and respect you and we wish you can keep up these wonderful things!

This is a must see in Zanzibar - from a attraction point of view and as well from an animal preservation perspective.
This is not like an ordinary zoo, it is far from that and much more a real sanctuary where the needs of the animals are known and well taken care of.
The great wildlife tour takes about 4 hours which gone by in the blink of an eye as the staff was presenting the animals in their habitats with passion and dropped some funny stories about them. Very entertaining.
You could also see how important the animals are to everyone there including the owner who also shared some history of cheetahs rock.
You will be able to interact with most of the animals (Cheetahs, Zebra, Tiger, Monkeys etc).
Make sure to support this great cause by visiting one of their tours.
Magnificent experience!

Very cool and hands-on experience. Workers share the stories of how each animal came to the wildlife rescue, which helps visitors understand their mission.

Visiting Cheetah's rock was really a unique experience. The animals are well taken care of and their individual rescue stories are touching. It was a pleasure to get to meet them - I've always wanted to come close to lemur and here there were many of them eating bananas from my hands! The white lions, bushbabies, hyenas, etc were equally cool, of course.
Sara Kalisnik — Google review
There may probably be some similar places to this but no counting on whether I'll ever be able to know where or when I'll get to experience it. Sitting next to a Cheetah, feeding wild animals. This really closes the chapter of me visiting a zoo for the rest of my life. This is more than just a zoo, is a wildlife conservation center. Of course a fully grown lion, tiger and hyena were still way too dangerous for a cageless interaction, but I can't believe I still fed food to those amazing creatures. The efforts taken by the caretakers are second to none. It's pricey and you also can argue that wild animals are best kept in the wild or their natural habitat. But all animals kept there are happy to be there because they had a tough time growing in the wild and rescued from hunters who killed their families and poached their hides for sale in the black market. The cheetahs were absolutely their own selves with their killer instincts and still had exceptional camaraderie with the caretakers in understanding that the visitors are here for the experience. Unbelievable.

Nice experience, all the animals seems healthy and happy. Guides speaks very good english and the tour is really informative. They give background info about all their animals.

I had the best time at Cheetah's Rock today!
It is really impressive to see all these animals so up close and interact with them in a respectful manner under the careful guidance of the knowledgeable guides.
Even though I got completely devoured by mosquitos, it was totally worth it!
Time flew and I am sure I will cherish these memories for ever. Truly a once in a lifetime experience and a must for any animal lover visiting Zanzibar!

Amazing! If you’re in Zanzibar then go. Animals healthy and you feel it is more conservation than tourism (IMO).
Interactive like no other place I have been. Shout out to #hungarian_mowgli for the amazing baby puma experience. We didn’t have time for the otter experience but it looked amazing.

This is definitely something to put on your to-do list for Zanzibar. It's not as much of a tourist trap as many of the other tours on the island. It's basically a petting zoo for adults but the over arching mission is a sanctuary for rescues. They sell admission to adults to experience several animals up close... And the fees they collect then offset the cost of running the sanctuary.
I know there's a lot of reviews that are critical of them for having this commercial arm... But I think it's actually a very good way for them to fund their operation. The staff is well educated and seems genuinely concerned for the well-being of the animals they take in.

I have no words to describe what we felt and lived over there. Those people dedicate their life to save animals and to take care of them. The Jozani Forest is a sprawling national park in Zanzibar that is home to dense woods, abundant wildlife, and well-marked nature trails. The forest is the only place on the continent where you can see the native Red Colobus monkeys.
Excellent experience. The guide was amazing. Walking through the forest while it was raining is parallel to none. Watching the black and red monkeys in groups, families is like watching NatGeo but live! The mangrove location was amazing. All in all it's worth every penny.

Jozani Forest is definitely worth a visit. Our guide was very diligent in helping us find lots of monkeys to observe. They came very close and we even saw many babies. Wear good shoes for walking through thick brush.

Nice trip and fun to see all the monkeys up close and learn about the trees and natural medicin. Our guide (included in the price of aprox 11 usd pp) seemed a bit tired but expect to give tips in the end of the tour no matter what :-)

Section in 3 parts if taking 1 hour tour.
First - see red zanzibar monkey (they are very used to tourists).
Second - walk through forest
Third - 1.2km drive to see mangroves.
Price - USD$12 for 1 hour tour .
Enthusiastic guide however what you actually see during the tour is not really worth it.

An amazing insight into the only surviving forest in Zanzibar. Protection from Tsunami and even climate change. Once under a coral ocean it is now strong mahogany trees and mangroves . Find the monkeys that are only found in this forest. Guides are well informed.

Lush green forest and all the red Colubus you could hope! It was a bit crowded so be prepared to be in a larger group, but it was still worth it. We loved our guide and all he said about life. He was so knowledgeable on medicinal herbs which was cool as a doctor. The mangroves were amazing too and a wonder to behold
Danae Bye — Google review
Most tours that you can book at Jozani Forest via the hotel and travel desks in the city visit two sites. At the one you can walk through the forest and see some monkeys at some locations. In general the forest is very clean and you won't see many other animals. We noticed that there were so many tourists walking around with their guides that any animal would actually run away. Additionally we were only walking very close to the road and not that far into the forest, which was disappointing.
Next we drove to the mangrove part of the forest. Nice walk but again so many tourists and hardly any animals.
As another minus: the toilets at the 2nd spot were quite something. Only two toilets/holes in the ground for so many tourists.

Beautiful experience because we went at the right time (08:40) we had a private tour because there were only people there, we saw animals and plants our guide Amur was very informative and patient, the money from the entrance ticket is used for the maintenance of the forest and for protection. The duration of the tour varies, it can be up to two or three hours for those who have a lot of questions and want to know everything.

Nice thing to do when you are in Zanzibar.
You don't need a tour operator for this one. Just drive up there (or get dropped off) and pay the entrance fee (24 dollar for 2 persons). You get a pricate guide as well.
You do 3 things:
- go to see the monkeys, which was adorable!we saw a lot of them
- walk through the forest
- walk through the mangrove
The tour lasted about 1H

Oh boy, was I pleasantly surprised. If you decide to visit the Jozani forest, make sure you tip your guide at the end of your tour (they are volunteers and do the tours for free, what you pay for the trip is not reflected in their paycheck). I highly recommend that you visit the forest during the morning hours, there is way less people and you might actually feel as if you had a private tour.

the Jozani Forest National Park in Zanzibar is an incredible experience that left me in awe of the natural beauty and biodiversity of this unique ecosystem.
Our guide was very knowledgeable and provided us with a lot of interesting information about the different species of mangroves that grow in the area, as well as the various animals that call the mangroves home. We saw a variety of crabs, and even some monkeys swinging through the trees above us.
The walk itself was quite easy and took us along a boardwalk that wound its way through the dense mangrove forest. The trees were tall and majestic, with their roots stretching down into the water below, creating a labyrinth of tunnels.
One of the highlights of the walk was spotting the rare red colobus monkeys that are endemic to the area. Our guide was able to point out several of them to us, and we were able to watch them foraging for food in the trees.
Overall, I would highly recommend a visit to the Jozani Forest National Park Mangrove Walk to anyone who loves nature and wants to experience the unique beauty of a mangrove ecosystem. It's an unforgettable experience that will leave you with a newfound appreciation for the incredible biodiversity of our planet.

This place seems overrated. You have a short walk through 3 forests. They look nice, but guides walk so fast (eventhough we had a lady with baby and one person with healing broken leg).
We had one stop for monkeys but it was on crowded Road, so not comfortable for photos and monkey observation
Paweł Świątek — Google review
The place is beautiful, it’s a real forest with lots of greenery and narrow pathways among the trees.
There are several options of the length of the tour available. We had a short tour which lasted around an hour. There was a group and a guide, who took us around and explained the things.
First we walked through the forest, and saw centipedes or milepeds and some of the palm crabs.
After that we approached a big tree where the monkeys were resting. They didn’t express any interest to us whatsoever, they were just chilling and living their monkey lives, people were watching, taking photos.
After monkey encounter we walked through the mangrove forest, and that was very beautiful and unusual.
As for me, I would like the tour to last longer, as sometimes I had a feeling that the guide is rushing us, just to bring us to the finish faster.
Other than that - no complaints, the place is beautiful and definitely worth the visit.
Олена Бережна (Lena Berstein) — Google review
We walked through the forest with a guide in a small group and got lots of information about the trees and other aspects of nature, like little critters.
After the first part of forest, we crossed a street and went to the monkey forest. Be careful of vervet monkeys, they try to steal things from your pockets. The red colobus monkeys are more relaxed and can be observed up close, but please keep a distance of at least 2 meters!
The forest feels like another tourist destination where many visitors are quickly moved through without much time to appreciate its beauty. Before the tour, we informed our guide that we want to skip the mangrove tour and therefore go through the forest slowly and peacefully, without any pressure.

My god, what a fantastic place. Just myself and 2 other people with a brilliant tour guide.
As a monkey fanatic, naturally I absolutely loved it; getting to see the monkeys in their natural habitat, as well as so up close and personal was such a dream of mine.
Monkeys seem to be very relaxed around humans too. The mangrove tree forest afterwards was also so unique, and your guides takes some photographs for you.
Just such an unplanned yet magical day - one of my highlights of Zanzibar.

Great experience. The best way is to get there by yourself and pay the entry in shillings. You will get a tour guide and then you will go to explore. That was my first time ever experience to see monkeys in the nature. Also at the end of the tour, you need to tip the tour guide.

So happy to see a nature reserve! Always a positive sign of a community realizing the importance of nature and all its inhabitants.
We had a great guide with us , BabuShebi. Loud, proud and a funny guide for sure. Very informative about the local Flora, fauna as well as all the local medicinal and non medicinal uses.
Great to walk through the dense forests, and we got to walk through in pouring rain, which was certainly a highlight of mine; and to my surprise , my partners also.
We walked quite a bit to see the local ‘poison monkeys’ and after quite a wait, we got to see so many of them. Young, juvenile and old.
Definitely recommend the visit! We missed out on the mangroves, but I hear that’s part of the visit as well.
Have shared some photos and videos of our walk through.

Took a long cab ride out here. You NEED a vehicle in order to view this area as a tourist. You pay for a guide. Our cab driver would communicate with the guide where to go for each section of the tour: "monkeys", mangrove, "forest". We came off a ship so it was packed with busses, taxis and people. After the first stop, where we did see some blue and reds, most of the people sharing our guide departed. The most impressive stop was the "forest" were we walked maybe a half km and were surrounded by red colobus. You are able to get very close to these chilled out primates. Very memorable
Nungwi beach is a beautiful white sand beach located on the northern tip of Zanzibar island. It's a favorite spot amongst adventurers and backpackers, who enjoy sunbathing, swimming, snorkeling, and diving. The atmosphere has transitioned from a peaceful fishing village to an energetic shoreline lined with hotels, bars, hostels, and dive centers over the years.
September 2004. Probably the best place to relax after the Kilimanjaro Climb. I did it the other way round. Scuba diving, food, beach all perfect.

An amazing public beach with an even more amazing sunset! Many beach activities are available for the tourists who visit. It can get a bit crowded at times too.
Suggest more security guards to be present as it got a bit frustrating for the women tourists who visit. Some of the local teens were being a bit too intrusive and evading personal spaces clicking pictures without permission. Acts like these tarnish the reputation of a tourist spot and the country as a whole.
Overall a good spot to spend an afternoon.

My wife and I took a walk down from Kendwa to Nungwi beach yesterday, finishing our walk with a visit to the Mnarani Aquarium. The beach itself was beautiful, but I must say that a major down side to the day was the sheer amount of vendors that approached us and persistently attempted to sell things to us. It's one thing to greet a tourist, but what we experienced yesterday was a constant stream of uninvited and very clingy salesmen of dhow tours, bracelets and carvings. I understand that it's low season at the moment and perhaps these guys really are desperate for business, but it wasn't pleasant and we don't intend to return to the area. We prefer a quiet corner of the island where we can be left in peace to enjoy the place.

2024.02// The N-E of Nungwi Beach has a pleasant and relaxing intimacy. It has a delightful local authenticity due to the presence of fishermen’s village.
Just before sunset the beach becomes a football field for locals, boys or teenagers all together spend the last hours of daylight playing football or bathing.
The beach is a sandy one; you can swim all day long even at low tide.

During the day it’s beautiful - but something seems odd. Then you see how this place is at night: Italians (they run the place) and locals fully on drugs, alcohol, fighting against each other and all have one aim: extort tourists from their lash money. Take care - full of scams and pushy people, thefts happen regularly (to me as well)

What a fascinating lovely little place for a beach vacation. The beach is lined with resorts and restaurants and absolutely becomes energetic once the night skies set in, I regretted not being able to be there for one of the full moon parties when nungwi becomes really lively. But the beaches are beautiful. There are sections of the beach which you may not be able to traverse through if there is a high tide. But the turquoise waters and the beautiful sunset and very affordable property prices make it a very attractive beach destination.
From the safety perspective, I was told to avoid loitering alone after sunset. So I did just that and was totally fine.

In the north (ZaVa Nungwi restaurant and up north), there is a lot of activity with locals going about their daily business. Cows are on the beach, and there are many fishing boats in the water. Unfortunately, there is also a lot of garbage lying around, and the smell can be quite strong.
Further down in the south (around The Z Hotel), there are many restaurants, bars, and small shops to enjoy, but also many tourists, several beach boys, and Masaais, which can be overwhelming at times.
I highly recommend snorkeling in the area between The Sands Baobab and The Z Hotel. There are many colorful fish to observe. If you're lucky you can see moray eels, sea snakes or lionfish. Bring bathing shoes to protect your feet from the sea urchins and rocks.
One highlight is the sunset on this side!
Changu Island is a popular honeymoon destination in Zanzibar. It's located off the coast of Pemba, and its lush jungle makes for a relaxing getaway. The island used to be a prison, and it's now home to giant tortoises imported from Seychelles in the 19th century. Visitors can explore the ruins of the old prison, snorkel in crystal-clear waters, and relax on the beach.

Highly frustrating and very sad place. Old, devastated prison (no entry inside!) neighbors with huge turtles sanctuary. The turtles have little space and all of them are surrounded with hundreds of tourists touching them constantly. Moreover newborn turtles are kept in a squeezed cage (protection against dangerous birds) up to the age of 10 years! Where are the animal rights activists???
The only real attraction of the island is the boat trip to reach it.

in short: terrifying. As others have already written, the area is falling into disrepair. Rotten fences, pathways fallen to pieces. The historical buildings are also in bad shape. One can only imagine how beautiful it once was. Where does all the money go? The turtles have no water, but almost drown in old lettuce, handed to every tourist. the beach is littered. many local "guides" are sitting around. A pity that the awareness of nature and care does not exist.

We enjoyed the trip very much. The island is a short boat ride away from Stone Town. Very picturesque beach with turquoise water. Of course, the main attraction are the 200 giant tortoises living there. They are very friendly and love to be massaged (would stand on their feet so you can reach better, ask for advice how to pet them). A tortoise living on Prison Island is thought to be 190 years old and considered one of the oldest known living animals in the world, ask one of the guides to show you which one ot is. Most tortoises have numbers on their backs showing their age. They are lots of tiny baby tortoises in a shelter. You can't spend a long time there (unless there is low tide and you decide to swim and sunbathe) and there is no food but nevertheless a great experience.

The prison island 🏝 a place where gigantic turtles lives . The spot famous for its turtles , which were brought a centuries ago from Seychelles 🇸🇨 (actually it was a gift from government of Seychelles to a Zanzibar ruler ) now this island a famous tourist destination which is cost about 20 dollars . To reach there is only by the sea via motor boat . Boat ride takes approximately 25 minutes one way and it’s wavy journey . Once you reach the island you have enough time to take pictures with turtles feed them and swim in the sea . The price of the entrance ticket is not well specified because they charge 10000 shillings at the checkout then however there is to pay another 6000 shillings is not clear why. They scam tourists because they are not clear with the costs, so be careful. The turtles are beautiful and there are also peacocks, overall the visit is worth it.

Poorly run and maintained. Bathrooms are flooded and smell terrible. Steps are falling apart. Tour guides say it's $7 to get into the park but if you pay yourself it's only $4. No one even looked at my receipt to make sure I bought a ticket. They place has potential but is failing.
The tortoise look like they're in pain and malnourished. Peacocks are the only happy things on the island it seems.
My favorite part was the 20 meters of clean beach to swim in without boats or guides harassing you.

This small but famous island is located about five and a half kilometers northwest of Zanzibar. The island is less than a kilometer in length and approximately 200 m at its widest. The boat from the stone town takes approximately 30 minutes to reach. The deep blue waters of the Indian Ocean are not that choppy. The ride is comfortable. The real name is Changuu island and the name prison island is a misnomer. Supposedly what was a prison is now a dilapidated structure that doesn't look like one. They say it was a quarantine center for those slaves who developed serious health conditions like yellow fever and TB. However, some rebel and unruly slaves were also made inmates there.
The main attraction of the island is a particular species of tortoise - the Aldabra. These tortoises so big that they call them giant. People come to see and feed them. There's a place for snorkeling too. The beach is very small with hardly any sunbathing activity over there.
A half day trip to the island is well suited to most of the travellers who visit Zanzibar for 2 to 3 days. The boat people ask for US30 for the trip. However, you can make it for 10 or 15. I paid 20K TZS for the trip which comes to a little above $8.

Amazing island, by visiting you will understand the historical knowledge of the area and you will be able to see the turtles who lived for around 200 years.

Despite of its grim past, it's a definitely awesome caribbean paradise. Touring the island takes around one hour, you can (and will) enjoy petting and feeding giant tortoises, you can visit the buildings that used to be a stopover in slave trade, and lately quarantine and fort, and relax on its beautiful beaches. You can get there mostly by small boats hired on the beach for 15 or 20 USD. Visiting the island takes another 5000TSH.
The Stonetown of Zanzibar, also referred to as Mji Mkongwe, is the historic district of Zanzibar City in Tanzania. The newer part of the city is called Ng'ambo. Stonetown can be found on the western coast of Unguja, which happens to be the main island in the Zanzibar Archipelago. A visit to Stone Town is incomplete without stopping by at Anglican Cathedral which was once a slave market and whipping post.
The Jambo Spice Farm Dole is a spice store where you can buy spices and fruits from different parts of the world. The friendly and informative guide will show you around the store, answer any questions and give you a taste of some of the spices. It's a great attraction if you're visiting Zanzibar and want to learn more about its spices.

Very busy spice farm near Stone Town. Was interesting to know more about spicies.
But a lot of people are there so you are not alone. You can learn about fruits and spices from Zanzibar. And even taste it.
The lunch is included with local food and fresh fruits.

Went to this spice farm during our stay in Zanzibar. Our guide was very informative and it was a pleasure to see how each and every spice and fruit you can think of is grown!
Do bring some change for tipping all the hosts aswell, we had regretted not bringing enough cash with us. Other than that, this tour is a must for any foodies out there :)

The spice tour itself was informative and we got so see and smell a variety of spices growing. However, the tour quickly shifted focus from spices to other experiences that felt more like a cash grab than a spice tour. We also got food poisoning from the fresh fruit, we should have known better, but the knife that they used to cut the fruit was rinsed with stagnant water between fruits. Overall, Jambo Spice Farm could have been very interesting, but our experience was below average.

It was just a great experience! We came here and got a tiny "bag" made out of leaves. This was to collect fruits, leaves, seeds etc. The tour is very interesting. You can see how the plants are growing, the guides let you guess which fruit etc. you see/smell - so much fun.
And it's really nice what they can build out of flowers and leaves. Kind of crowns or necklaces or bracelets. Creative and lovely.
At the end you can buy soap or spices but it's also fine if you are not interested. There was no pressure.
And we got some fresh fruits to eat.
Definitely recommend it!

We enjoyed our tour with Esther. It was fun trying to guess the spices we were looking at 😊 Esther was quite knowledgeable and very friendly. Delicious green coconut milk and meat, followed by a generous portion of spiced rice, sauce, plantain, spinach and thuna, topped off with sampling delicious tropical fruits! Very interesting and good fun. As ante sana 😊👌🏽

We had a great time in Jambo Spice farm with our guide, Osman and his assistant Mr. Cappuccino! Osman took good care of us and explained everything about the spices and fruit from how to grow it to area of use. We also got delicious lunch and sample of the fruits afterwards.

Educational, but it felt as if we were being shuttled around to see something and give a tip. After your guide meets you, they show you different spices and how they are grown. At some point, you are taken to get a fresh coconut and see someone climb a coconut tree. Another person cuts fruit for you, and someone else plates you local food. Someone makes you a hat. By the second half of the tour, our guide stopped caring. Kind of just gave his speech about the plant and kept walking, not waiting for us to take photos. Someone in my group did purchase a langi langi perfume (no pressure sale by the small market), which had a refreshing scent. I mostly enjoyed all of the activities and enjoyed the food, but I was put off by the frequent need to tip and how the tour ended.

Visited this farm with an excellent english speaking guide who had a great knowledge about all the spices and plants, including history, use - there was not a question he could not answer to. At the end of the tour you can taste some fruits freshly picked from the farm. The best pineapple and papaya I have ever tasted!
Rebeka Tóth — Google review
It is not a farm but a kind of garden with different variety of spices. Thé guide was nice but the begging for tips by different people you meet there is extremely annoying making you feel very inconfortable.
Martin D. — Google review
I really liked our guide and found it informative but it felt like we were held hostage for tips every step of the way for things we didn't ask for. Some guy climbs a tree and sings a song - gotta tip him. Some guy makes you a crown out of palm fronds - gotta tip him. Now someone serves you some fruit. Gotta tip him. It's really tedious. I didn't mind tipping the guide, but four sets of tips is absurd. If you go just tell the guide at the outset you are here for the tour but don't want to tip for all the extra stuff (though the fruit tasting was nice, maybe ask for that if you like fresh fruits).

The food not bad but, very small portions not at all what they are writing in menu. We ordered beef and it was announced 200 grams but we got so small portion, maybe 50. I’m a cocker and have my own restaurant and I know how much is 200 grams. Paje by night you need to change numbers on menu or to buy working scales for weighing products

Basic but clean rooms. Very good breakfast. Very nice people. Super close to the beach and the Paje by kite school is on the beach so you can chill there.
Has a backpacker feel to it so would recommend for solo travelers or groups
of friends rather than couples.

Service : We are not in paje to be in a rush and its quite normal to wait here. But there... 60min for starters and 45 more for mains! Pole pole, alright, but nearly 2hours... even in Zanzibar, it's too long. ;)
To this, add some mistakes with our orders (never seen neither the spicy rice and veggies written on menus, nor the wine (but charged on the bill though).
Food : the mezze was mezzo. We were as far as we are from Lebanon. The prawns and avocado tower was unfortunately too bland to compensate. Besides veggies/rice deceptions and the tandoori chicken that was as dry as a bone, mains were ok. Not enough to forget the long wait and mistakes. Especially with prices slightly above average.
2 stars :
One for the nice environment/garden, the other for spinaches and curry. For the rest, they really need to work to improve the experiment. Cheers.

So, unfortunately, the review score suffers here due to the nature of another customer, who was allowed to be aggressive, arrogant, and absolutely spoiled towards us. We had arrived 2 hours earlier and asked may we watch the Liverpool match. The very nice barman put it on TV and we ordered drinks and food. Soon after the match had started, a 'man' arrived who decided that he would now take the TV to watch another match. When we refused, he became aggressive and extremely rude. It got to the stage where I felt intimidated. At this stage, I decided to make a complaint at the bar. And hence this is the reason for the 1 star. The staff did not care, unfortunately. I might add that the original bar man who was so good to us was not there at this time. As I realised that nothing would happen, we had to pay our bill and leave due to not feeling safe. I might also add that this 'man' was not Tanzanian. So I guess the lesson here is that your safety from other customers is an issue and should be taken more seriously in the future.

I can not recommend less. This is the first time in my life that I leave a restaurant without eating (and god knows I love restaurants). And lot of people left as well because of the waiting.
Before all I would like to mention the fact that I have been in Zanzibar for weeks and I know that "pole pole" is the norm here, but this was just too slow this time
We waited for 2 hours for pastas & a burger, which never arrived (despite the waiter telling us that it would be ready in 5 minutes, every 5 minutes). After confronting the manager, he told us that there were too many groups and everybody was too busy: honestly we were 30-40 no more.
We went to the counter to pay for the drinks we had while waiting, and ask to cancel our food. They didn't even apologize and after another few minutes of waiting, they gave us a bill including stuffs we didn't drink. We paid for what we drank, I have to admit we were expecting a discount after such a nightmare ...
Edit : the answer of the owner is pure lie. To start with, I was not there with any friend so I’m not sure who the owner is referring to. Then we were told that the wait was 0,5 hour, not 1,5 which is way more. I was hungry so I wouldn’t have waited for that long, no matter the food. Maybe next time don’t spend your entire night on the sofa and take your responsibilities on what’s going on in your restaurant.

Very nice hotel. Rooms are located in the garden, a lot of trees and plants, almost like in jungle. Swimming pool under the palms do the job.
Around 100m to the beach, a lot of small shops around, also one tourist shop ( with prices) if you need something from europe to buy. Really good place to stay. No minuses at all.

I recently stayed at Paje by Night in Zanzibar and I have to say, it was an absolutely amazing experience. From the moment I arrived, I was greeted by the super friendly staff who made me feel right at home. The rooms were beautiful and impeccably clean, with everything I needed for a comfortable stay.
One of the things I loved about Paje by Night was the super relaxed environment. The resort is located in a beautiful, peaceful setting, and it was the perfect place to unwind and relax. I especially enjoyed participating in the daily yoga classes, which were held in a beautiful outdoor studio overlooking the ocean. The instructor was excellent, and I really appreciated the opportunity to practice yoga in such a beautiful setting.
But the real highlight of my stay was the food. The meals at Paje by Night were absolutely amazing, with a wide variety of delicious dishes to choose from. The staff were all so helpful and accommodating, and I ended up becoming friends with several of them during my stay.
In addition to the great staff, beautiful rooms, and relaxed atmosphere, I also had the pleasure of getting to know the owner of Paje by Night. They were so welcoming and hospitable, and really went above and beyond to make sure my stay was as enjoyable as possible.
Overall, I highly recommend Paje by Night for anyone looking for a comfortable, friendly, and enjoyable place to stay in Zanzibar. The staff, rooms, yoga classes, and food are all top-notch, and I can't wait to go back and visit again in the future.

Took a solo trip for my birthday to Zanzibar. Was very pleased with Paje By Night. Breakfast, yoga and massage were included in my booking. Yoga included a morning Mysore practice and and evening Vinyasa. Carolina was a great instructor, patient with those new to the practice, but also really help me push my practice (I've been practicing yoga for over 10 years). Mats are available, but If you practice regularly I would recommend bringing your own mat or sticky towel. I got the deep tissue massage and it was so worth it. Only regret is I didn't have enough time to get another one! Employees and management were very helpful and engaging. Other travelers (mostly solo) were friendly. Breakfast (included) offered a nice variety. Latte was solid. My room was clean and had a nice layout. One downside was water pressure was a bit off in my room, but honestly not a deal breaker for me during my stay. I brought it up as I left and was told they would work on it, as the place I was staying was newer. I appreciated that the location was a bit off the beach, but not isolated.
The Slave Market Museum is a must-see on your list of things to do in Zanzibar. The entrance fee is only 5 USD, but it's well worth the visit for all the information and artifacts on display. There is also an informative guide who will make the tour more enjoyable. The Slave Market Museum is a reminder of how important the slave trade was on Zanzibar in the 19th century.
It was good excursion about Zanzibar history of slavery and role of this place. It was very interesting to visit and look basement, where the slaves had been keeped before sold.

In order to get inside and see the St Anglican Church and the Old Slave Market monument you have to pay a symbolic amount and hire a guide. Our guide was very informative and she helped us learn a lot about this sad part of history. It is must-visit if you are exploring Stone Town.

A good place to start getting a glimpse of Zanzibar history and how it was mostly centered on slaves, and how slave business continued even after it was officially abolished. You pay an admission ticket at the entrance and are given a guide. The tour was a bit short and the information rushed, probably because we were the only 2 people assigned to our guide, but we managed to see the main points of this establishment.

Dont understand why anyone should pay for this. There are good info panels about the history of slavery which tell you more than a "guide" that will take you to the church - LOL?! .. theres a statue of slaves and you will see the slaves chamber and thats it. Ok for 5 dollars but very annonying thing is that other "salesman" would try to force you to buy their muslim clothes that you "must" wear if you are a woman to go to the church, very amusing :))

Great place to go to understand the history of Zanzibar (the slavery and ivory trade, the church and influences on the culture). You are given a verified private tour guide once you pay the entrance fee and the guide gives you lots of info and you are free to ask questions. The guides are also available to hire for a walking tour of Stone Town if there are other sites you want to see.

Apparently there is more than just the exhibit with panels and pictures, and a place underground also. We couldn't find it, and you might need to pay a guide extra for that (on top of admission to the exhibit).
A few rooms details the history of the market in display panels with photos and renderings and a lot of reading. There is a monument that you can see in the photos. The interior of the cathedral is nice. They have services on Sundays in Swahili. There is a service in English at 8AM in the chapel. The price of admission is high, but you're not paying for new information, simply just to get past the gates to see the monument and read some panels, and be in the same place where it all happened. The information presented is definitely sobering and good knowledge to have when visiting and touring Stone Town, but if you can read about it online and have no need to be in the same location as where it happened (and could be content with just looking past the gate--or visiting on Sunday for church to get on the grounds), you won't be missing much.

First of all, where you can find this in world? Complaints about paying are riddicilous for visiting slave market, THE church made in both styles and just to be there is pretty astonishing for me. I pitty those coments. Amazing place amazing tour and amazing part of history to see what was done and still is done in different mental state and how we “progress” or not. Few things in World history are important like this, there is no other way to put it. Was great visiting and worth of “paying” for this.

My visit to the Old Slave Market/Anglican Cathedral in Zanzibar, Tanzania, was a sobering and thought-provoking experience. The site was formerly a slave market, where thousands of enslaved Africans were bought and sold during the 19th century.
The history of the site is presented in a clear and informative way, with displays and exhibits that detail the brutal reality of the slave trade. The guided tour was insightful and provided a greater understanding of the horrific conditions that the enslaved people were subjected to.
The Anglican Cathedral, which now stands on the site of the former slave market, is a beautiful and striking building that provides a fitting tribute to the victims of the slave trade. The architecture is impressive, with high ceilings, stained glass windows, and intricate details.
Overall, my visit to the Old Slave Market/Anglican Cathedral was a powerful and moving experience that left a lasting impression. It is a reminder of the inhumanity and cruelty of the slave trade and serves as a call to action to continue to work towards a more just and equitable society. I highly recommend a visit to this historic site for anyone looking to gain a deeper understanding of the history of Zanzibar and the impact of the slave trade.

Informative museum on the East African slave trade. Dark times for humanity. The shame of many prosperous countries in the world. It really gives you a lump in your throat here, looking at the depictions of villages being burned and families split up and shipped away. The East Africans were sent as slaves to mainly Arabia, after being imprisoned and bought here in Stonetown, Zanzibar. I knew a lot about the slave trade to the Caribbean, but not so much here, so it was very educational. Lots of history, pictures and illustrations in the museum, and stories on individuals. I got a good background on how Dr. Livingstone was on the side of the slaves and tried to promote trade of resources to phase out slavery. There are also some stories on the individual slave traders, if you can stomach their greed and heartlessness. There is also a basement under the church where the slaves were imprisoned, that you can explore. A guide is allocated to you with the price of admission. Our guide was really good.

This is a must see museum, the ticket price also includes a guided tour and you can stay in the museum area reading the information boards to your hearts content. I have visited many slavery museums, those in the Caribbean, US and UK and this one was particularly interesting because it elaborated the East African and Arab slave trade which I knew very little about. I would highly recommend and it has inspired me to do more reading on the subject.

The Anglican Cathedral in Stone Town, built on the site of the old slave market, is a poignant blend of history and spirituality. The cathedral's architecture is impressive, reflecting the island's diverse cultural influences. The adjacent memorial garden serves as a powerful reminder of the painful past, making this site both a symbol of resilience and a place for reflection.

This is one of the better things to do in Stone Town. It has a whole presentation on the history of the slave trade. It provides more content and perspective than what one might learn from a high school history class. It's worth the visit for that alone. There is a small entrance fee. I can't remember how much, so relatively inconsequential. I've attached a few snap-shots of the narrative, but take note it is only a fraction of the content provided.

And we rubbed cinnamon coconut oil around our nose and lemongrass on our body against mosquitoes🦟 . Do not hesitate to do this tour specifically after which you can buy perfumes and spices. We were a family of 6 (4 adults and 2 children). We had a very good time with our tour guide Omar and his assistant Rashed.
We saw different spices and fruit trees and learned a lot about them (their harvesting process and seasons, as well as their uses).
Around the end, there's a guy who climbs the palm tree to show how it's climbed using a ring made of palm fronds as it seems.
There are stands where they sell the spices they harvest, souvenirs, and a guy named Ismael who sells fragrances in small bottles, soap bars, and lotions. Our favorite fragrances were the Zanzibar mix, coffee flower, and cardamom flower.
At the end, they took us to a large seating area (covered) to taste some tropical fruits.
The entry fee is $10 per adult. Children enter for free.
Make sure to bring cash in Tanzanian Shilling for tipping as everyone is expecting it (the tour guide, the assistant, the guy who climbed the palm tree, and the guy serving the tropical fruits).

The spice tour is a perfect opportunity to learn about the plants of fruits and spices you use in the kitchen. The tour guides are knowledgeable and friendly.
You will pay entrance fee (10000 tzs per person), and then the guide brings you to various spots where you can buy products:
- parfume shop
- spices shop
- magnets shop
These were still okay because you have the choice to not buy. But there will be also palm climbers making small show for you, and a guy letting you taste fruits. These plus the guide expect tip because they claim that they don't get a share from the entrance fee. They will stand in front of you and pressure you to tip them and then swear in Swahili when the tip doesn't satisfy them.
It would be much better experience if the entrance fee would be higher and cover the personal. We left with mixed feelings.

This place is just incredible. I'm not easily impressed, but we are blown away. It's truly ecological with a compost toilet (which works perfectly fine), solar power and basins around the bungalow to collect water which is used onwards. You spend the whole day outside, breathing fresh air, sleep to the sounds of the ocean and wake up by the birds singing. In the evening you can marvel at the amazing coconut crabs. Only 15 guests are allowed on the island so it's all quiet and peaceful. There is candlelight dinner and breakfast/lunch with a view towards the sea. Dishes are fantastic local food with vegetarian options. The staff is super helpful and experienced, happy to satisfy all your desires. We are deeply grateful for this experience and especially want to thank Chagga, Hamza, Khadija, Coppa and everyone from the team behind the scenes for making our stay truly memorable! Asante Sana from the bottom of my heart for everything we saw (above and below water) and learned, we felt so much like home and every day was a new adventure. The coral park is fantastic and you will see more fish than you can count :-) Pictures can't even describe the magic, you have to feel this island and its reef, it's the most unique place. Therefore we only can recommend to stay at least 2 nights.

Living like Robinson Caruso for a few days on a private island was magical. This small island has so much diversity and is extra special due to the limited number of guests. It’s peaceful, the food is wonderful, the snorkel is amazing and the experience was out of this world. 2 nights was perfect.

I made a day trip here and it is totally worth it, though it is not cheap for 80 Euro a person. Anyway it seems to me the best off island tour in all of Zanzibar. The snorkling was nice, the food is good, staff is very friendly and you even get a hut to stay while you are on the island. It is reslly a lovely place. Though I would not like to spend an overnight here. It is an eco lodge with little comfort but a higher price.

A conservation gem in the heart of the Zanzibari archipelago. The staff were lovely, the boat rides well managed and most of all, the island and surrounding waters pristine. If you want a to experience something different, minimalistic and pro-nature, Chumbe Island Coral Park is the place to be.

Chumbe Island is an amazing destination, whether you are staying for a night (or more) in one of their amazing eco-lodges or just heading there for a day trip. The snorkeling is great which is evident in the mission of the park-one of the few privately owned marine areas in Tanzania that depends on revenue from tourism to drive their conservation activities. The views from the historic lighthouse are breathtaking. You’ll learn a lot from the rangers who will lead you around the island’s forests as well. If you need some rest and relaxation away from the hustle and bustle of Stone Town, look no further than this 45 minute boat ride from town!

This place is incredible. I stayed 2 nights here and the staff, amenities, and activities are all amazing. The eco-friendly aspect of this resort added to the experience in a way I think everyone should experience

Definitely worth staying at least one night. The island is completely isolated and clean. Only a few people that you will get to know during the day will be staying with you - enjoy peace and silence in the beautiful nature. Staff is helpful and flexible to your requests.

Amazing Robinson Crusoe island! So restful. Brilliant snorkelling experience in coral reef. Lovely people.

Such an amazing experience sleeping with the wonderful sounds of nature. May have been the best sleep of my life! Snorkeling was good — we saw an octopus! Reef sharks swimming just off shore — you can watch them from the beach. Coconut crabs also cool. We stayed 3 nights, and it wasn’t too long. Kids loved it also.

The staff A1, location, food, rooms and the nature walk is everything you need to do away from the beaches, the price you pay is includes all that plus snorkeling
Lucy Choge — Google review
My husband and I spent 1 night on Chumbe Island on mid August. The weather is great, you don't even need to bring the towels but bring something to cover your shoulders as in the evening it's a bit windy.
The staff is super friendly and welcoming and they pampered us with excellent local food and great breakfast.
The accommodation is unique, there were no spiders or mosquitos, we slept like babies surrounded by the sound of nature. The compost toilet is nothing to be afraid of, I've smelled worse in Stone Town streets.
They also provide you for free with sun hats, reef-friendly sunscreen, and local beach pareos (don't remember the names) and snorkelling gears.
There are lots of organised activities (e.g. snorkeling, sightseeing from the lighthouse, walk in the jungle, night walk to see the coconut crabs) but there's also plenty of time to relax on the beach beds, wander around, or watch the stars in the night.
Overall, one night on Chumbe Island is worth the whole travel to Zanzibar and the price is worth it, considering it helps support the local nature's sustainability.
Thank you for helping the planet and building lifelong memories!

Visiting Chumbe and staying for one night was a dream. The island is breathtaking, the staff is lovely and knowledgeable, and the activities (snorkelling, forest walk and crab walk) were very special. The rooms make you feel like you are alone on the island.

Paid for Business class. All we got was first dibs at seats before economy starts storming in. Basically just the same as economy. Not worth the extra cost. Better pay more for VIP if in budget range for a better experience. Hope this helps someone out there.

Would not go for this company. When something goes wrong. You are on your own. They told us the Ferry will take 5 hours. Instead it toke more than 11 hours on a ferry. This problem was a problem that was already for weeks. They not told us. Instead they sold us the expensive tickets. After trying to get in contact with them they give no response. Scam company.

As a tourist you have to pay like 60USD, and locals pay less than 10% off that.
The ferry is fantastic, upto date, VIP treatment etc.
The ride is a little choppy.
It's easier and cheaper to FLY. 20min flight. £38

Great private fast-ferry company connecting Zanzibar island wiht Dar Es Salaam in about 1h20min. Downsides are delays in departure, waiting room for boarding into thr ferry is not clean at all, and while travelling on days with rough weather, things inside the passenger cabins are getting out of control(lots of yelling).
Nikola Milina — Google review
Air conditioned, international passengers need passports but can pay with card. Full ticket 35US, reduced rate is 30. You can get tickets in advance.

Horrible. Kilimanjaro IV.
At the ticketing office in Dar they told me that VIP class was fully booked, so I bought the Business ticket. Once boarding was complete I was asked if I wanted to upgrade to VIP and they asked me for 30,000 tzs which I should have given to them. After checking upstairs I saw the VIP Class with several vacant seats.
I refused the upgrade because I didn’t want to give money to this scammers staff. In business class the air conditioning was freezing and the fan started leaking so some of us made the trip standing up. Poor care and attention to passengers. Buying new boats is fine but first make sure the old ones are fully functional.

we bought 2 tickets for dar es salam. It was displayed at $35, we had the money in shillings which made 182k. he asked us for 196k which makes $76. telling us it was their exchange rate. how is it possible to have a higher exchange rate when we pay in their own currency? the Guy at the counter was aggressive when we told him. We're tired of being ripped off on every street corner

Close to the port. Can be tricky to access b3cause of no parking spots and liable to get stuck in traffic. However ticket vendors are all over so jo need to go there specifically.

Only use the ferry if you have to…Ferry terminal experience was good as we’d paid for VIP (the middle tier). The ferry itself seemed a bit chaotic as some people wanted to sit in their allocated seat whilst others were saying it was “sit where you want”. Paid online yet had to pay in full again as “their systems didn’t show a ticket”. Barclaycard sorted it on return, but it felt a bit scammy, or best case amateurish. Had that been someone younger travelling without the ability to pay twice and re-claim later it could have been very stressful. Then in terms of the ferry experience, there are lots of porters asking for 10000 just to wheel your case 20 metres. Very pushy and unpleasant.
All in all if you have to use the ferry, it’s ok but if you can fly then the experience on Air Tanzania by contrast was absolutely exceptional.
Richard Gahagan — Google review
The ticket office in Zanzibar claims their card readers aren't working so they can charge 10% more for cash payments by inflating the exchange rate.
Better to pay on their website in USD and take the confirmation number to the office to print the ticket.
Even better to fly. It doesn't cost more but is a lot more comfortable.

Used your service on January 19, 2024 for 16:00pm going to Dar es salaam. Staff along with people at the port very rude and loud yelling at customers even after you’ve paid VIP service. They wont even seat you together after paying 5 to 6 tickets, ( assigned by the way). Just terrible customer service. Very much rushed and wild might aswell use economy. Just a terrible experience. No regrade of hard earned money any coming home for vacation. The trip from Dar es salaam to Zanzibar was more pleasant. ZANZIBAR TO DAR DONT DO IT WORST IF NOT TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE EVER 0/10.

Jambiani Beach is a coastal tourist attraction located just south of Paje Beach, on the eastern coast of Zanzibar. The beach is popular for its stunning views and relaxing atmosphere, and there are only a few hotels and restaurants in the village itself. Boat trips can be arranged to take visitors further into the area, where they can explore Jambiani Village and enjoy traditional local life.
A perfect paradise and quiet beach for many hours of walking and exploring!

It's a weird one!! The tidal sway is massive. In March the water is in early morning and back in after 4pm. So 5pm is a good time to swim in the very warm water. It's long and can take at least 3 hours to walk. But fascinating to watch locals collect seaweed at low tide.

Beautiful beach. Clean, very long beach. Friendly local people. You can run whethewer you want, do kiting, snorcheling and others. Local or hotel restaurants are open till the night. Every day twice there is lowtide. But you can watch how people make holes for fishing… go for walk or into the water (some tens meters). Beach is free.

The beach is nice. Sometimes you can swim, other times you can look up for shells and tide leftovers. Not so nice is the road to it. Seems like there are two different worlds. One side you can see luxury resorts, instagrammable beach with palm trees, but on the other side you can see the poverty of the people who are living there

Beautiful & relaxing beach, white sands & beautiful water.
It is great for people in search of quiet natural beach without umbrellas and sunbeds.
it can be a challenge to reach the water when the tide is low
2024.02// It was a pleasant experience; we choose to visit the turtle sanctuary in the middle of the day and the whole visit lasts 30 minutes, no more than that; it was not crowded; we choose not to get into the water with the turtles, we just feed them.
They were preparing a turtle release day and it was very nice that we could participate in their turtle release day activity.

I do not recommend this place. Aggressive staff. The guard attacked me, pushed me. Low level of management. This place is not of high interest. Large congestion of tourists - not controlled by the manager.

I saw an anaconda snake in a small pen here. Anacondas are found on the mainland not Zanzibar. A jungle rat was also in the pen. A man asked me if I wanted to see the snake eat it. I declined the offer. There were baby turtles kept in small sand buckets as well. This is not what it seems. It is for tourist money not conservation.
Philip Reddy — Google review
Great to feed and swim with the turtles. Check on tide beforehand. The Babies could use a more inviting environment
Gregor Robertson — Google review
it’s such an amazing sanctuary built for turtles where visitors can experience a live interaction by feeding the turtles and swimming with them though you have to be careful as the turtles bite. if you are faint hearted like me then be careful as navigating between the efforts to get in the water with the turtles and the fear of them biting you may make you slip and fall as i did which in turn turned out to be so hilarious and i carried a beautiful memories of purses some bruises along the way 🤣
it’s a must visit place when you are in zanzibar. the staff over there are very welcoming and friendly.

Don't go there - Its definetly not worth it. The guide couldnt give us proper informations about the sanctuary and the turtles are treated badly. Tourists are touching them, feeding them etc.

Meda Petkevi?i?t? — Google review
Entry is 20k tsh, €10, $10. Included in the fee is seaweed to feed the turtles and a thorough brief by the workers on how the place is run. There is a separate tiled pool built for hatchlings and a big natural cove-like pool for the adult turtles who you can swim with. A lot of fish in it too. There's also the remains of a blue whale that has been there for as long as I remember. I've been visiting this place since I was a kid in school. It has largely stayed the same.
Worth the visit.
Zayn Gothey — Google review
A quick and fun experience, but it is more of a business than a sanctuary. 10$ entry fee +5$ for a pair of goggles. The turtles were swimming all around you, but the water stank of their poo. You could shower after, but they requested an additional fee to see the rest of the park.
Lasse Post Møller — Google review
There are 2 places in Nungwi where you can see turtles and they are often confused. This one is a conservation and the other is a tourist attraction. They allow swimming with the the turtles only because otherwise no tourist visit. You should not swim with turtles this is UNETHICAL. Just enjoy seeing them up close and feed them seewead. You help a local project by going here.
Lore Maene — Google review
DO NOT SWIM WITH THE TURTLES! 3 months after visiting the turtles, my wife was admitted to hospital back in the UK with Salmonella poisoning for 4 days. The doctors tracked this infection back to swimming with the turtles.
We enjoyed visiting the turtle aquarium, there's a little pool with a few baby turtles and then a large natural salt water pool that contains the adult turtles. You can get in the water with the turtles or you can feed them seaweed from the edge. The staff will explain the different breeds of turtle to you as well as show you a humpback whale skeleton and dolphin skulls.
Would say you only need 20 minutes at the centre.

Don't visit the place. I regret having financed them. They keep the turtles starving to give the tourists a show. The turtles bit both my husband and I. It was strong and I bled but the staff didn't care.

Amazing experience, the staff is composed of volunteers that are eager to share their knowledge and experience to make sure more people are aware of the vulnerability of those animals. They release most of the turtles every year in February!
A tourist attraction in Zanzibar is the Zanzibar Butterfly Centre, which is home to many native butterflies. The center lets visitors watch the lifecycle of different butterfly species and feed them. It is one of the largest butterfly centers in Africa, and is a beautiful destination to enjoy the tropical gardens.
When you feel tired of the Zanzibar sun,
I recommend visiting this place.
Don't expect too much. This is a loyal style place. We will learn about the development stages of butterflies and we will be able to see and touch chameleons. Enjoy your visit :)
Michael Nowak — Google review
The centre has a nostalgic feel especially when you think of butterflies and the beauty they add in nature..we were looking forward to a step back in nature and experiencing this in their natural environment..the host was knowledgeable especially in explaining the life cycle and showing us around but unfortunately the centre has a neglected look. The place is abit run down and even the butterfly sighting wasn't as expected which was disappointing as the uniqueness of it would have made the experience worth the entrance fee paid. The place has potential and most people would identify with the magical feeling of being in nature surrounded by the beautiful butterflies.
Veronica Mosha — Google review
It's neat in concept. Great way for locals to make money by farming butterflies/cocoons. They sit you down for ten minutes and teach you about a catepillar-butterfly life cycle, and then bring you to a huge tent where butterflies fly freely. The plants are nice. Nice place to stop for thirty minutes. Price is roughly $6. They have a chameleon exhibit too, which I didn't visit. The butterfly center is not worth making a specific trip to, but if you happen to pass by and have some time on your hands, it's a nice visit you can say you did.

We had the best time visiting the butterfly center.
Itis a very unique and peaceful place. There was something truly idyllic about walking around being surrounded by all those beautiful butterflies and the sounds from the forest.
You could also tell how passionate our tour guide was about not just the butterflies but nature and animals in general.
We also love the concept or idea behind the center: promoting sustainable use of natural resources while providing extra income for the locals there.

The butterfly center was the most beautiful trip we did in Zanzibar. We learned a lot of new information about butterflies and the enclosure is absolutely stunning. It felt like a fairytale. They also had chameleons that you could touch, which was definitely a first and a really cool experience. All in all I 100% recommend visiting!

We spotted this from the side by the road as we drove to town and I'm so glad we stopped. The entry was really inexpensive, from memory I think it was $6 USD each. It's a local community initiative to provide income to locals and it's also interesting. They show you the different caterpillars, butterfly cocoons, and then you go into the butterfly house and can see them all flying around. They also have a number of chameleons on sight which were incredibly to see and a real highlight.

We rallye enjoyed our visit ans would highly recommend it. During the explanation about the caterpillars we got some tea. It took an hour for the guy to show and explain everything to us. First the stadium of the butterflies, later we could see the chameleons and the bush babies, the machine they use for weaving and of course the butterflies. Lovely place, nice people and worth a visit!

WARNING: extortionist boat ride!
i booked a private catamaran for my friends and family to celebrate my birthday november 2023. i paid US$2000 which converts to over $5 million TZ shilling for an 8hr ride!! for that price i expected a certain level of service.
The Good:
1. the boat was in good condition
2. the chef prepared an amazing lunch that was satisfying and enjoyed by all 24 passengers.
The BAD (and these's much):
1. via email the plan was to be picked up at our hotel's dock. due to the extreme tides in zanzibar this was not a true option. i was dishonest of azam to say it was possible when it wasn't. had i known in advanced, i could have made appropriate transportation plans.
2. poor communication once in zanzibar - i was not given the correct whatsapp number for the captain and VICTORIA the company liaison did not adequately help with facilitating day of communication.
3. we were forced to go to the beach that azam operates from meaning unexpected cost of transportation resulting in a 2hr delay to the start of our ride. upon arrival, NO ONE was there to greet all 24 of us ranging from age 73 to 3! after getting help from a kind employee, we were escorted to small boats that brought us to the catamaran. POOR customer service.
4. we sailed near but not up to mnemba island. i chose NOT to pay extra for snorkling in that area; however half way through our sail, we were detained by what i describe as pirates and neither our captain, nor VICTORIA (via phone) came to our defense but rather appeared to be in cahoots with the pirates to extort money from us. initially the ask was for US$5 per person for our time near mnemba island, however since we never stopped by the island, the asked dropped to US$3. still refusing to pay, the captain spoke with victoria and the pirates and the final settled price was a total of US$50. this back and forth took almost 1HR of the boat ride!! the pirate boat was called "TOM CAT."
6. we did not receive any kind of refund nor an apology from VICTORIA for how we were treated.
in all my travels many international travels, i have never had to pay a bride at any stop. that bribe has always been paid by the driver. this time was different.
DO NOT WASTE your time or MONEY on this extortionist racket. we finished our boat ride without any additional incident, a total time of 6hrs on the water. thankfully my family is lovely and took the whole experience in stride.

Great place for family fun day.
Recommendations:
1. Toilets could be much easier if they had also lockers for clothes
2. With big hotel of that magnitude i believe there is more to be done with food and drinks.
3. Umbrellas when it gets too sunny and raining

For all visiting yachts I would NOT recommend using this Marina.
Rubbish is left rotting on the Dock for many days.
The staff are unhelpful.
Ash from a burning Rubbish Tip lands on your boat every day.
The water is also only working half the time and has terrible pressure. Not ideal if you want to clean your boat.
Also in our case without agreeing a price or understanding the job they completely ruined our new antifoul by scrubbing off completely our soft antifoul, costing us a hugely expensive haul out to Redo it. They apologised but said tough luck mistakes happen.
It is also very far from town and there is no fuel at Marina.
Save yourself the trouble and anchor off.

Overall we are very happy with our stay at Bluebay hotel.
We spent there 7 nights during December, there was not so many guests at the hotel.
As we have option all inclusive- we could taste and drink almost everything. Cocktails was quite good, food tasty- comparing to the other hotels- definitely could recommend it.
We have to mention the hotel staff- specially the wait staff- they were amazing! So helpful and always smiling! Thank you all!

We spent a week at Blue Bay in June 2023 as a family of four with two small kids and absolutely loved it! The hotel has a beautiful garden and great views, is very clean, and located directly at one of the best beaches of Sansibar.
The meals are delicious with fresh and high-quality ingredients. One evening, the hotel's cook filleted a 2 meter long Blue Marlin (which he personally caught the night before!) right at the barbecue station of the dinner buffet - it was delicious and I definitely recommend booking the all inclusive package.
What's really outstanding is the hotel staff: they are all very friendly, smile all the time, love kids, remember your names and preferences and really go the extra mile! Thank you so much for your fabulous service Ezra, Joyce, Lizzy and Dass - we'll always remember you guys! We had an amazing week at Blue Bay and will definitely return!
For kiters: You can do kitesurfing right at the beach in front of the hotel during low or medium tide - at high tide the beach is gone and there is no place to launch or land your kite. A little walk on the beach up north you find the kite school 'one love' which I recommend.

The rooms in this hotel are really run down especially the bathroom. We had water running down the wall. Definitely not what you want from a 5 star hotel. The gym was a good size but had an extremely leaky roof!!
The staff are lovely and they are really accommodating.
The spa was good for massages but you get charged extra for everything, steam room and sauna use and hot tub (which is just a bath…) so that was disappointing!
Staff are lovely and the beach is nice. The island is so poor tho, I think it’s not an ideal location if you want to go out and explore the area. We only went as it was partnered with our safari in Tanzania. I think you struggle to find a proper 5 star service on the island without paying crazy prices

It was fantastic. Had some bad experience in Zanzibar in some of previous visits but the experience we had this Easter 2023 holiday at the Bluebay Beach Resort & Spa changed it for us. Definitely recommend to go and try. We will go again. From rooms, staff, food, entertainment and fun for kids...made it magical for us...staff (from Managers, receptionist, waiters etc)..top of their game. Friendly, professional and very helpful to client needs.

Really nice getaway with amazing included meals at 2 different beachside restaurants overlooking the pool and water. Great guest entertainment at nice and beachside water sports included in your stay at the resort! Not the best location if your plan is to tour around Zanzibar, ie. new towns, local life, Stone Town or other beaches, as the location is remote and minimal transport availability. Overall great vibes and super nice and responsive staff who are very accommodating.

My daughter and I enjoyed 3 wonderful nights at Blue Bay in early Nov 2023. Staff were pleasant, attentive and helpful at all times. Our 2nd floor room was very nice with a beautiful view from our balcony. Food and drink were delicious. The cafe area was quiet and relaxing. Nightly entertainment during dinnertime was fun! The pool and bar were refreshing. We enjoyed a really nice massage. And kayaking in the ocean was wonderful! We can’t wait to visit again in the future.

I was recommended this hotel by other family members who visited a couple of years ago. From the beginning of my stay till the very end, I absolutely enjoyed the trip.
The staff in all areas were very friendly, warm and welcoming. They ensured that we were attended to well and quickly as we had 2 babies also!
The food was brilliant - we only got chance to eat at the Makuti restaurant and there were lots of options to choose from (Veg/Non-veg). They also made sure that everything was labelled so guests could choose from what they see. The drinks (fresh juices) were very tasty too.
The room was was very nice and cosy - had a TV and AC in and housekeeping made sure that everything was in order (especially in the evenings when they came to put the mosquito net and spray while we went for dinner). The bathroom was kept clean and there were lots of amenities such as hair dryer and shampoo/conditioners/soaps. We spent most of our day by the pool which was nice and clean too. There's a pool bar and a snack bar (for all inclusive guests) nearby which made it easy for me to feed the children. However, it is a shame that the snacks aren't available after 5pm.
Overall, the surroundings were very nice and clean but I wished they had a play area for children which they could go and pass time. They do have an inside play room but it was ideal for toddlers. They do have several programmes on for kids but unfortunately we didn't experience them as such due our busy schedule.
The beach itself was clean during the day but the ocean does reach towards the bottom parts of the steps in the early morning and evenings so I was hesitant to go in.
My overall stay was an absolute pleasure and I would definitely recommend anyone to come here for a holiday! It'll be an amazing experience that one will never forget! Thank you all at Bluebay!
I only wish that they reduce the use of plastic bottles for drinking water and source another way of getting water into glass bottles. And the same for the shampoo/conditioner bottles.

It is quite a nice hotel with quite good food, however, we are very disappointed by the non-existent goodwill and understanding in case of problems and feel fooled!
We have shortly before arrival to the hotel suffered a severe food poisoning and had to be treated in the hospital (there were also some side effects with medication, etc.). It was therefore impossible for us to arrive at the hotel from the beginning. We then arrived there after two days after the premature end of the medications. Here we described the problem with the two missed days and asked for a refund due to the circumstances. Here we were assured several times that this would not be a problem from their side (our booking site Expedia would be rather problematic here). After departure and repeated request for a refund by mail via Expedia, however, no one wanted to know anything about the refund promised to us there. The general manager has claimed false facts here and according to the mail heis not even entitled to decide something like that.
Why do they tell us something like that on the spot and act very understanding and as soon as we are gone the opposite happens?
The said manager does not answer our mails anymore.
This is not acceptable for a 5 star hotel. Are very disappointed and would not recommend it! It was already hard enough because of the disease and then you don't need something like this!

A great getaway spot on the beautiful Indian Ocean, Rooms were great, large clean. Plenty of beach chairs on the beach , and seats by the pool . We were on the inclusive plan and the food was very good. We also ate at the alacarte restaurant, having prawns ( plentiful ) and fresh tuna. Excellent. The staff was very accommodating , always nice and helpful. Not sure if it a thing or not here, but umbrellas would be good for the beach. Also pay for for incidentals in local money , as the credit card only does US dollars and their exchange rate is typical of a hotel ( lower ) . Otherwise the place is perfect for a getaway and we plan on returning . thank you

A beautiful resort with amazing staff. We had a fabulous week here. The food was delicious and varied and there were lots of vegetarian options. The rooms were lovely and we had the biggest bed I have ever seen! The grounds of the resort are beautifully maintained. Would definitely recommend The Bluebay and would love to come here again.

Mmm where do I start. I was just a walk in guest for lunch. And firstly I was asked for 50000 tzs at reception “because we need some money for the payment process to work” that is is the explanation I got. I had to get a number (like a temporary room no.) so that everything would be paid at reception later. Fine. What I later found out, when I went to pay, was that it was meant to be $25 entry. But the lady at reception just could not just say that …apparently. The pizza I had was awful… tinned tomato base sauce and with ham and tinned mushrooms. A bad Regina …not the Fungi and Prosciutto as advertised and certainly not worth $18. Everything else on the menu looked horrendously over priced. The senior staff arrogant and rude ..the more junior staff….clueless. It took 30 mins to get a wifi password. Needless to say I didn’t pay the $25 entry fee ….as they explained it to me AFTER I had had lunch. Save your money people and don’t stay here…. and this was Christmas Eve. I feel sorry for those that were staying there

If you want to get robbed this is the place for you. While getting a massage, faced down, the therapist went into my wallet and took American cash.
I immediately noticed when the massage was over ( I am very particular about the way I place my money) and I demanded to speak to the manager. I told them if they didn’t handle this I was going to tell all guests what happened. The manager told me to go about my day and he will be back in touch with me. He came to my room within the hour and told me he would comp my massage and also give me a 200 American credit minus whatever I would spend at the resort and also the resort VAT. He explained that their protocol was to have the therapist require me to fill out a form listing my personal belongings before my massage which she didn’t so he will hold her accountable. The next day at checkout he changed his tune knowing I would not have interaction with guests. He did give me a credit of 200 but I still had to pay for my massage. The amount of money I received back was not what she stole from me. He turned very arrogant. To top it off the front desk staff told the others in my group that stayed longer than I did that I didn’t pay my bill.
If you read the reviews the same exact thing happened previously. The staff is aware.
FYI- she is still employed at this resort so BEWARE.

Beautiful hotel, great location. However we had no WiFi connection during the night in the rooms, even though they indicate in their website that all rooms have WiFi service.
Tumbatu Island is a serene and secluded spot with no vehicular traffic, providing a peaceful refuge for visitors. It boasts stunning beaches that are isolated from the hustle and bustle of the outside world, as well as crystal-clear waters that are perfect for swimming and snorkeling. One of the island's most famous landmarks is its iconic lighthouse, which stands tall against the beautiful backdrop of Tumbatu's natural landscape.

(Translated by Google) CORAL DESTRUCTION AND WASTE
After some research on the internet, we decided to go snorkeling in the Tumbatu area. We met a guide called Zubé. He organized the excursion for us by paying a taxi driver and then a captain with his boat. Everything went well except the way things were done:
-Drops anchor in the middle of the corals which destroys everything in the anchor area.
-The area is really not great, I have the impression that half of the corals are dying..
-Tells you that there is a trash can on the boat... strangely, once back on the beach you see the same plastic bottles etc. lying around everywhere.
-Quite expensive price even after having negotiated a lot (200 dollars in total for 4 people from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. with 2 hours by car and 1h30 by boat, or 30 mins of snorkeling..)
If you want to preserve what little remains of this environment, I beg you, don't do these excursions anymore. I know lots of reviews say it's beautiful etc. but these people don't look further than what they see in the foreground.

Forodhani Park is a compact urban park located in Zanzibar, adjacent to a historic fort and offering breathtaking views of the sea. The park features an array of palm trees, shrubs, and open lawns. Originally known as Jubilee Gardens until the 1964 Revolution, it was redesigned and revitalized in 2009 by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture.
A very well maintained park, with awesome views of stone town and the ocean. A must visit place for any tourist heading to Zanzibar

Beautiful park but litter everywhere! Everyone eats and dumps trash wherever they like.. increase some bins.. food is good. But a nice place to sit and relax.

I think this is an opportunity to have a great experience in a beautiful park. This is because they cook and sell various foods and provide a variety of foods to travelers. However, they charge exorbitant rates and rip off travelers. This kind of behavior is something that discourages tourists from coming.

The garden in the old stone town with history backing to early 1930's. Its a medieval designed public park overseeing the indian ocean with a floating reastaurant giving a clear view of cargo and passenger marinas bussy on the port of Zanzibar. The park has well maintained lawns, huge natural trees and concrete round seats with arabic decors. During the day the place is bussy with tourists taking photos and tour guide personels telling old tales about the ruins and the garden itself. During night yiu will find countless food venders with variety of swahili food, sea food etc. You real won't regret visiting this place

The Gardens are especially busy after sunset, when tourists and local alike gather in a popular food street market in the main square, to have dinner enjoying Swahili and Zanzibari cuisine delicacies such as grilled seafood, samoosas, cassava and sweet potatoes

A nice large park. The right part of the park has the food stands.
My favorite was the Zanzibar bowl and the Zanzibar pizza.
After the food stands, you can find the famous jumping cliff. The jumping show usually starts an hour or two before sunset. The guys there also offer you a show where they sing for you. You get to pay them whatever you can.
The left side of the park has some coffeeshops and a playground (for a fee).
The sunset view from here is sublime!

Great experience if you like laid back eating, sampling Zanzibar foods seated on concrete slabs. Food vendors operate at nightfall at seaside. There's a formal restaurant on site

Good collection of foods and amusements. However, I'm expecting more cleanliness. The same hot oil on a pan is used for frying various foods (veg and non-veg). The local people's food habits and preparation styles are probably like that. I saw lots of people enjoying themselves. Jumping on the ocean during the evening is really a very dangerous play and probably the trademark of this play. People are highly jovial, friendly, and welcoming. They never mind if you don't take any food from them after enjoying the preparation or spending time in front of their stall. I am here with my family and spending two evenings in this place—a perfect place for spending the evening and rejuvenating yourself. We have not taken any food from this park as we want to keep us away from non-veg items.
However, I wondered why a few people unnecessarily approached us and started discussing. We are unable to understand their intentions. It might be their jovial nature.

Good place to relax after your stone town tour but the place wasn't soo clean. All seafood n meat are overpriced and unfortunately we were served rotten chicken. Such a terrible experience. I believe it was intentional because we requested for take away. Be careful with the vendors.

Full of people selling street food, photographers, hawkers, people gathered around areas where locals are jumping in to the sea, lots of stuff going on, was quite nice. 100 times better organised, well lit, needs more bins, less vehicles running through, very nice ambience.

Actually some really good food here, and a good selection, but street vendors harass you a bit too much, and you have to haggle for everything. Defo worth visiting though, the Zanzibari pizzas are decent, and the strong sugar cane alcoholic mix is a good way to start and end an evening.

Don't leave Stonetown without trying out the street foods at Forodhani Garden. It is an open dining under tents/canopies with some established restaurants and most in open air. You either choose from the presented menus or select from the tables meats, seafood, and foods displayed on the tables.

They try to pressure you to buy things and Add things to your order without telling you the price. Say no to everything the stall people say and take your time look around to avoid the scammy vendors. Prices at stalls can vary from 7000 to 500 depending on the stall you go to
