Fort Jesus Museum is a 16th-century Portuguese coastal fort in Mombasa that has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its thick walls, frescoes, graffiti, inscriptions and embellishments showcase the area's history and culture. Visitors can explore the grounds and climb on the battlements. The museum contains Kenyan archaeological finds, making it an important cultural attraction. Overall, Fort Jesus Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into Mombasa's rich past.
Very serene place with a rich history. You need to pay a tour guide for you to get to understand the history. Special mention to Swaleh. He did a good job taking us round and very passionate about what he does. Visit this place when in Mombasa.

First and foremost, you'd better buy ticket in advance via e-citizen unless you have a M-pesa. It took me so long to log in and make the payment, although I insisted to do so cause the entrance fee doubled if you pay with cash.
Tired of tour guides the day before, I didn't take the guided tour but it was fine. Nice place to understand the history of the city.

The site is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There aren't particularly notable attractions, and the Promenade that offers a view of the sea was closed to the public. As a result, views of the sea can only be seen through small windows.
Viewed from above, the structure can also resemble the human body, embodying the Renaissance ideals of balance and harmony. It is well-preserved and represents a symbolic presence in the history of fortification construction.

Attended the Sounds & Light Show on a Sunday evening. A well narrated history/timeline of the fort, as you watch an Animated 3D illustration. Then fireworks to celebrate at the end.
Also, touring the Fort at night is pretty interesting, you will appreciate the false colour created by lots of red lighting.
Exploring deep into the buildings is also very adrenaline inducing.

Very rich history and really well kept. One of the most interesting forts I’ve been to and a great starting point for a tour of the old town.
Tip: Get a tour guide. Ask for Dogo (aka Ahmed) he is really unassuming but will surprise you with his knowledge of history, geography, and some current affairs for good measure.

Great to learn the history of the area back to the 1600's. We went in the morning, which was perfect because there weren't many people, so lots of perfect opportunities for many pictures. I had a guide/friend with me, however another guide did try to say we needed to hire him; I spoke up and told him several times it was not necessary for me to have two guides, and I'm more than capable of reading the signs. I loved being able to walk around at my place and explore the buildings and grounds. You can definitely hire the guard if you'd like.

Beautiful iconic world protected heritage reflecting the passage of Portuguese through Mombasa. The external area is also amazing but needs a great cleaning around it, the potential is there, however, far from the full reach.

I had an amazing tour at the Forte Jesus by a guy named Fanju.
He was very well aware of that entire forte history off head, very friendly guy and spent more hours than the agreed time for the tour without asking for extra money. I enjoyed the reach history of forte Jesus & won’t mind doing it again.

Great place with so much history of the past, very informative and a nice place to take the kids for a day out, there are paid guides outside but there are several free guides inside. Well worth a visit.

Quite a bit has changed since I was last here... But still worth the visit and a trip down memory lane.
First off, the staff are very friendly and helpful.
Fiona was very patient at the ticketing counter even though I was giving her a hard time by not understanding the ticketing prices. 5-Stars for her. She's a keeper.
When I found the prices for the local guides steep, she suggested to me that I get a student tour guide from inside the fort and just give him something as an appreciation for his services. I took on that offer and for Maxwell as a guide. He was very informative and very patient with us giving us enough time to explore and take pics and ask him a plethora of questions (definitely get a student guide... Highly recommend Maxwell).
Enjoyed it amply and recommend a visit to the fort for anyone coming to Mombasa, young and old.
Tour takes about 1-1.5 hours. Go during the day time. No crowd.

This place has a historical value. The structure resembles the body of Christ thus it's named after Him. Here with all other historic things one can see the skeleton of a whale.

Special place with an immense amount of history. We had a great guide that told us all about the history and gave us a tour through the old town of Mombasa. Would absolutely recommend this for tourists who are interested in history and culture.

The place is rich in Kenya's history during the pre-colonial time and when the early visitors from Europe,Asia and Arabic Kingdoms visited kenya during the indian ocean trade...entrance fee is affordable and guides are readily available to educate you
Bryan Ochieng — Google review
This place is not bad to spend a couple hours. It gives a lot of info about the past Portuguese and Arab colonialism with many items on display and the fort itself is very well preserved and not easy to see something like this in Kenya as this kind of architecture is not common there. I don't give it five stars only because AGAIN like in many other places here there are sharks by the entrance that WILL try to scam you. They first tried to bring us to another ticket office to cut the waiting (don't fall for it it's not real they'll just take your money!) And after they tried to give us a tour guide that was charging per person more than what I paid as a foreigner for the entrance ticket which is outrageous (don't fall for this too there's really no need for a guide as everything is clearly explained) also clearly tell them to leave you alone because they'll follow you and guide you around and after they'll expect you to pay them, so firmly send them away or expect to pay a hefty fee at the end.

It takes already 15 minutes to become a ticket at the entrance. Very complicated. It is maybe a historical place and a nice view over the sea. But in my eyes a bit over hyped. Price for tourist 1250 ksh and for locals just 400 ksh.

The Pembe Za Ndovu landmark, also known as the Mombasa Tusks, is a popular tourist attraction located on Moi Avenue in Mombasa. These aluminum tusks were built in honor of Princess Margaret's visit to the city and have become a symbol of Mombasa. Visitors often take photos here to commemorate their trip while small stores nearby sell souvenirs and other items. Although the tusks are worth seeing, they do require a fresh coat of paint.
I loved the place. The traffic was well managed. The garden on the other side was clean and green.
Jose Mulandi — Google review
You haven't been to Mombasa if you don't pay the Tusks a visit. This is one of the symbols of Mombasa and it is one of the most photographed sites in the city. Would definitely recommend one to visit them.
Photography around the Tusks is absolutely free. There are usually photographers around who charge to capture and print the images at an affordable rate.
Erected in 1952 using canvas stretched over a wooden frame then later on in 1956 modified into Aluminum so as to endure the weather conditions. They were further refurbished in 2017. They are painted white to give them an ivory look. They also coincidentally form the letter, "M" which stands for Mombasa:).
They were erected along Moi Avenue, formerly known as Kilindini road since Princess Margaret was expected to pass through the road from the port. She was on a 5 week tour of East Africa & Mauritius which started with Mombasa.
With time, the Tusks have embodied the function of commemorating the coming of Queen Elizabeth to Kenya since she became queen while in Kenya.

How will you know you are in Mombasa without visiting the famous elephant tasks!!! I didn't know why & till I was there & it was such an amazing site.
I find it creepy standing in the CBD to take pictures but at this spot no one is even minding your business & you can have as many pictures as you want.
It was a beautiful thing to experience.
Fun fact it's located in the Island part of Mombasa.

Situated downtown. This sight is truly amazing to see after our visit to Tsavo, where the main attraction is elephants. Mombasa was the seaport where all the ivory was exported from to the rest of the world. However, it is now not legal to process ivory in any form. Apparently these tusks were erected not for the ivory trade but for a visit from the British Royal family. Worth a walk down this main street to see these.

Pembe Za Ndovu, the iconic man-made elephant tusks standing proudly along Moi Avenue in Mombasa, is a marvel deserving of its five-star rating. These majestic tusks, symbolizing the city's rich cultural heritage, captivate the eyes of both locals and tourists alike. The meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail are awe-inspiring, creating a picturesque gateway to Mombasa's heart. As cars gracefully pass beneath these tusks on both lanes, a sense of grandeur and history envelops the atmosphere. Beyond being architectural marvels, they serve as a testament to the city's elegance and charm. Pembe Za Ndovu stands as an enduring symbol, welcoming visitors with open arms, making it a must-see destination and a true five-star wonder.

The Mombasa Tusks are a must see on your visit to Mombasa. Strategically located on Moi Avenue, it has become a signature of Mombasa. You will find tourists taking pictures here to signify their visit to Mombasa. There are small stores around the area where you can buy souvenirs and other petty items. Take a walk to explore the city. To get the best photo you'll need to cross the street and stand in the middle walkway. This is free and you can go anytime. Across the street is a nice park to walk through and get some shade and take a rest, if needed. There are so many bats flying and hanging from the trees.

Definitely a place to go see. A real landmark for the city. 5 stars for that. Congrats for keeping the tusks up and running. Hope they can fix the rust on them. I noticed the tourists stop there a lot and go into Uhuru Gardens to see the bats. Trouble is the gardens are quite unkept and overgrown, hence only 2 stars. If the gardens were top notch, it would give a good report and heighten the appreciation of this great city. I see efforts have been made by those responsible which is commendable.

Sharing a glimpse of the iconic mapembe za ndovu (elephant tusks) in Mombasa, Kenya!
These tusks hold historical significance, once marking the vibrant trade routes of the city. However, it's crucial to acknowledge that the ivory trade, which once thrived here, is now rightfully banned globally to protect these magnificent animals.
Let's cherish these tusks as a symbol of Mombasa's rich cultural heritage and advocate for elephant conservation. Join the movement to protect wildlife and support responsible tourism. Together, we can safeguard these gentle giants for future generations.

Nyali Beach is a well-liked destination for swimming, sunbathing, picnicking and relaxation. The beach features an ever-changing scenery with stretches of white sand and occasional seaweed coverage. The vibrant colors of the surroundings make it a feast for the eyes. Visitors can enjoy water activities in clean salty waters, and there are plenty of shallow pools even when the tide is out. It is important to use sea safe sunscreen while at Nyali Beach to protect oneself from harmful UV rays.
Love this beach as it changes so much…sometimes long stretches of white sand, sometimes covered in seaweed. Beautiful to look at, amazing colours, great to swim or paddle even when the tide is out as so many pools remain.

Very clean and beautiful atmosphere for a public beach! Lots of family friendly crowds and activities. There are many lifeguards for safety and the minimal pollution makes the beach a great cheap way to spend your day! There are also many food options as well as locals who can take you out on a boat for a reasonable price.

The water is so warm that I almost thought I was bath water.
The palm trees, the camels and the sun...what more you want to forget everything arround you ?
Not that crowdy like the famous beaches. I love that.
At low tide you can walk on the sea. Attention, bathshoes would be an advantage, there are sea urchins.
We were able to see and touch many animals, but someone looked after us.
The tide starts again around midday, around 2 a.m

Beach was nice, relatively clean. The wind is a bit crazy so you get sand everywhere. You need a chair to avoid. Also the camel owners did this to one of their camels when it didn't want to sit down. The camel wanted to walk with the other one down the beach and the owner tied his legs and let it walk 300m down the beach and back again with its legs tied with the rope rubbing on his ankles. I wouldn't ride on one of these because of the treatment of the animals. They were scarred and branded too.

The hotel offers four restaurants serving great food, and guests can enjoy evening entertainment to help them relax. With excellent beach views and access, Bamburi Beach Hotel is perfect for swimming pool enthusiasts who want to enjoy good value for money. Although the rooms are average, guests can expect outstanding service from friendly workers that will make them feel right at home.

Quite an interesting stay.... The food was great. The hotel rooms are okay the bathrooms are completely outdated. The service is quite poor... mostly caters to Caucasians... As a Kenyan who asked for service by the pool I was not attended to asked to speak to the manager the manager promised to make time but didn't even come hear my complaints. Pool attendants are not willing to assist you if you are black. Very disappointed in the treatment they have for their very own Kenyans giving them business. The animation team ladies are more concerned with looking for white older men than entertaining all residents. the hotel hosted a company party without notifying guests...pool and bar were full
with rowdy drunk outside guests. Hotel guests were basically kicked out of main hotel to have dinner elsewhere just because of the company party, with no notification prior! Will not be coming back there and would not recommend. Save your money... Go elsewhere!

The hotel is great. Good location. Good food. Very friendly staff. Hotel has 2 swimming pools and is on the beach. We were on full board so enjoyed the food and drinks immensely. The bar man was knowledgeable. There are many other hotels and restaurants in walking distance if you want to try something different to eat.
Things to improve- attention to details by restaurant servers. Why don’t people write the order. Why do they think they will remember all the details. Constant reminders had to be given as they would miss things forget part of the order etc.
there is an option to order snacks between main meals. Twice we ordered a snack - once a pizza and another time a burger and they took over 1 hour to serve. The water in the room toilet is very salty and you need bottled water to even brush. The free drinking water bottles they provide in the room are of 250 ML. It takes long waits to get these bottles when you run out. The hotel has a cultural show every night and then dancing near the pool that continues till 11 PM every night. The hotel is old so are the bed mattress. Lumpy and you feel you are sleeping in a hammock. They have no Tv channels. Rooms have smart TV with internet. You can use your own Netflix or prime to watch movies or shows. For news you can use YouTube. The hotel has no elevators and most rooms are not accessible.

We have visited several resorts in the last 10 days, for the day, every resort to voyager reef, the continental , Paradise, flamingo, English point, white sands… EACH HAS BEEN extremely hospitable and welcoming!!!
Visited the resort Bamburi Beach Hotel twice and both times we were meant by the un welcoming gate keeper ,we arrived at 5 pm, It was only the buffet available from 7 to 10 PM so no à la cart available. I was told that you could order the day before but then you can’t.
All inclusive at designated times, with a very limited menu. The vibe is dark and gloomy. There bottle for purchase such as Smirnoff vodka is triple the price from other resorts, I was not impressed with this resort at all..
The bar around the pool is not really even matching the atmosphere they portray. It’s like a hotdog stand with some plastic chairs and tables. Plus they even bring in their BEACH PEDDLERS around the pool to really bring up the intensity 🫏.

We had a 3 days vacation in this hotel. The ambience of the place is absolutely fantastic. The buffer food services during the breakfast, lunch and supper gave us a variety of meal options. At one point, I had octopus meat for the first time and was absolutely delicious. The rooms are well maintained and the fact the they are facing towards the Seafront, this made the stay absolutely worthwhile. There were several activities such as exercises carried out in the swimming pool, swimming (allowed from 6am to 6pm), every night entertainments and so everyone was catered for. There is a lot of information to add but I would recommend this place as a tourist attractions places in the North coast region of Mombasa.

I strongly recommend that you do not stay at this hotel and look for other accomodation in Mombasa. You can easily find higher quality hotel rooms for a cheaper price.
I made a reservation to stay at Bamburi Beach Hotel earlier this month. Unfortunately, I had some unforeseen circumstances and I was unable to come to the hotel in time.
Trying to cancel/modify my reservation with Bamburi Beach Hotel was an extremely frustrating and painful experience. The hotel was not willing to offer a refund or partial refund even though l did not use their services at all. I think it is reasonable to have to pay some sort of fee for cancelling a reservation. But it's completely ridiculous that the hotel still wanted me to pay for an entire hotel stay that I could not physically use. Their cancellation policy clearly states "costs 1st night to cancel" in the booking reservation I received. Yet the hotel charged me several hundred dollars for the entire stay. The hotel also did not inform me or provide me with a receipt when charging my credit card. These are extremely shady business practices. I made multiple attempts through booking.com to contact the hotel about my reservation and modify it. Unfortunately, booking.com informed me that the hotel did not respond to my requests. I also contacted the hotel directly about this issue. They said they would look into this issue and contact me later on. To date, I have received no such contact. Obviously, I am extremely disappointed by their customer service.
If you scroll through the other reviews on this hotel, you'll notice that their is a pattern of cleanliness and hygiene issues. Multiple people have said that their room's toilets didn't even flush. These reviews and my personal experience demonstrates that this hotel doesn't care very much for their guests. I advise you to stay far away from this establishment.
---EDIT---
I feel like this is a comedy now. After I posted my original review, the hostel staff agreed to honour their own cancellation policy and give me a refund. However, instead of receiving the refund I have been charged a second time to my credit card. This is ridiculous. I have now been charged $600+ for a hotel stay that I never used and I have wasted hours trying to get my money back. DO NOT GIVE THESE PEOPLE YOUR CREDIT CARD NUMBER!

We have never felt SO DISRESPECTED and UNWELCOME! As i am writing this message i am still currently staying at the resort as my last day in Mombasa comes to an end. We are a part of a group of 12 government delegates on a work trip staying at the resort for a workshop and last night one of our colleagues staying at a different hotel nearby was refused entry into the hotel restaurant on the basis that he has to buy a buffet dinner ticket in order to come into the hotel. When we spoke to the front desk and requested we speak to the management to address the issue the General Manager, Mr. Nico not only refused to speak to us, but also proceeded to yell at the reception who had called him on the phone in a very rude and verbally disrespectfully whereby we can hear him through the phone. We were informed we can speak to him the next morning when he arrived but only AGAIN to be told in the morning that we cant SPEAK TO HIM we also requested for his email but AGAIN was refused. Now, please tell me or help me understand how you can run a hotel whereby you have 12 delegates staying on your premises and you REFUSE to let a fellow colleague in?!!!!!! We will make sure this goes up the chain as far as possible and make sure none of the institutions we represent EVER again use the hotel!

I had the pleasure of spending my holiday at the Bamburi Beach hotel with a friend.
The hotel is located close to Mombasa, which allows you to enjoy many excursions, and the coastline provides picturesque views from the early morning hours.
The rooms are spacious and cleaned daily. In between relaxation and swimming pool activities, you can enjoy delicious meals in the restaurant. From the moment you enter, the hotel staff welcomes you with a smile and a helping hand. The animators, with attention to the smallest detail, can encourage you to take part in the attractions provided by the hotel and make you interested in talking about the customs and life in Kenya, especially: Harrison, Khasan and Ali.

I popped by Bamburi beach 🏖️ for a day swim with my 8 month old and 3 year old. I had no grand expectation. In my opinion I got the best deal imaginable. The one day entry included lunch, afternoon tea and swimming up to 6P.M.
My 3 year old went in half price and the baby was free.
The Lunch buffet had a variety of food, freshly prepared. The fruits very juicy and very tasty. The pineapple especially was from out of this world.
We all ate very well from the buffet and went off to enjoy the beach as well as the pool. The afternoon tea has a variety, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, pancakes, cassava, cake, beef stir-fry....you name it!
The people working at the hotel were content. Which makes a big difference to the atmosphere of the place. I was so relaxed. My children had such a good time. My 3 year old said ' Mummy me want come back here again '.
Today is sadly our last day in Mombasa, yesterday was spent well in Bamburi beach Hotel. A lovely place full of lovely people.

We’ve had a terrible experience at Bamburi beach hotel.
Rooms: 2 of the rooms smelt like damp. We told reception and they aired it out twice, unfortunately the smell was coming from the air con. We were not offered new rooms. We continued to stay in smelly rooms for 11 days.
My fridge did not work for the 11 days I was there and never replaced.
The tv did not work for the 11 days I was there.
Bathroom door was broken and did not close.
Food: The food was the worst part of the hotel. The food was the same everyday. The salad, fruit and cakes were occupied with flies the whole time. Flies for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The salad was never really topped up and it would become soggy and warm in 30 degree heat. We ate a lot at the Sarova White Sands next door and the salad was kept on a cold plate with ice and it would be served by a waiter. The cakes and fruit were in a fridge so it was very fresh.
We spent most of our time eating out even though we had paid for an all inclusive package.
Hotel: There are two pools. We spent a lot of time at the pool at the back as it was much quieter but there were no drinks at the bar. Not even water. You would have to order the drinks if a waiter was around and wait a very long time!
It was very busy and over the Easter weekend they did not have enough space in the common areas or even during eating times.
The sun beds were never cleaned in the morning. We had to clean them ourselves.
The entertainment was good. There was always a performance followed by some music which we did enjoy.
Staff: Reception were unhelpful - very poor customer service. Chef Denis and Florence were great always checked to see if we needed anything.
The cleaners for our rooms were great.
I’ve stayed in a lot of places in the last 10 years and this has got to be the worst stay I have experienced.
If you are looking for a hotel on Bamburi beach, we highly recommend Sarova or Travellers Beach Hotel & Club.
Do not stay at Bamburi Beach Hotel!

An expanse of natural environment that is ideal for birding, picnic and wildlife sight seeing. There's a 30 minute stretch from the gate to the sundowner site, very ideal a relaxed trek. It is best you visit here as a group to fully appreciate the surrounding environment. The giraffes adorn the sundowner site. Some are shy while others stick around as you pass by. You want to be upclose with an ostrich or giraffes!? Then make a visit to the place. I knew giraffes are tall but to see them upclose with no boundary between us was breathtaking. God really took his time with his creation huh?
Oooooh and Penny the Ostrich was super friendly & adorable, I love animals. She kept following us around..
The nature walk to reach the animals was also an adventure to die for, I had a good time being one with nature.
PS: Request for a tour guide it makes it sooo easy for you to be upclose with the animals.

What a lovely treat! Giraffes just hanging out and a random ostrich joins the party. The staff is very nice and clearly wants you to have a good experience. If you don’t have a car, a nice option is to get dropped off at the picnic area and walk back to the entrance.

If you fancy being in close proximity to giraffes, ostriches and gemsboks without the presence of a barricade, then this is the place for you. Carry your own meals and have a picnic by the giraffes or at the sundowner site. Having a personal vehicle for commute through the sanctuary is advised due to the distance from the entrance to where the animals are. Outstanding views are nonetheless promised as you take that drive to the animals and rid yourself of the fear of these beautiful creatures; only then will you truly enjoy your experience. In summary, a beautiful picnic spot that is lacking in your bucket list🫵🏾

There are many crocodiles to see in multiple pits. They also have a few snakes. Don't expect much action here as the crocs rarely move. The guide will just explain what you are viewing. You have a better chance of some excitement if you can go when they are feeding the crocs.

Everyone is so rude and not very accommodating & feeding the crocodiles once a week seems like a stretch and they need to be inspected. the building looks like it’s not being maintained at all!
The receptionist and at the entrance the ladies are not very accommodating & very rude especially the lady with the blue tshirt. Work on getting staff who are accommodating very crucial for a touristic site

This is a home of crocodiles, they feel so chilled whether as a bask, float even a loaner in that case. Not forgetting to mention how new reptile groups are coming into the picture next month. The experience was so great so was our tour guide 😌. We had a taste of crocodile 🐊 meat & I must say it's yummy & tender. So when your in Mombasa, make sure to stop by Mamba Village Center & say hi some crocodile.

Amazing place, though the management could do a lot better in terms of maintaining the place, especially the snake park. A few tips if your planning to visit :
1. They feed the crocodiles at 5pm everyday
2. They feed the largest crocodile ( big dady ) at 5pm on Fridays.

Not much to see. Just different sections full of crocodiles and another area with about 3 snakes... Nothing exciting expect taking photos with the python.
Nakumatt Nyali Shopping Center is a shopping mall located in Mombasa, Kenya. It offers a wide variety of products and services to meet the needs of its customers. The mall features several retail stores selling diverse items ranging from clothing to electronics, as well as restaurants and coffee shops for dining options. Additionally, Nakumatt Nyali Shopping Center has banking facilities and ample parking spaces available for convenience.
It's a shame that this branch of Nakumatt, arguably the best in Mombasa, was closed down two weeks back. The city mall has other shops and eating places too. The mall has elevators as well as escalators for those that can't use the stairs. There is ample parking available. The guards at the entrance can sometimes be annoying and petty- but I guess that's important to ensure the shoppers remain safe.

I have been going there for the past 3 weeks and could not get rechargable AA batteries. Could it be they are pushing out other brands to davor their own? And when I wanted to top up my debit card couldn't do so because the system is 'offline'. I wonder how they continue to do business..

One of the two biggest malls in Mombasa set up in the affluent neighborhood of Nyali. Nakumatt itself has fallen and the stalls are close to empty. However the mall is still vibrant owing to the good eateries, entertainment joints and shops.
The Jumba La Mtwana ruins, located just north of the Mtwapa Creek in Kenya, hold significant archaeological importance comparable to the renowned Gede ruins. The town is believed by locals to have functioned as a prominent slave port during the 14th or 15th century. The site features a small museum showcasing Swahili culture and an exceptional seaside restaurant. Visitors can enjoy guided tours from knowledgeable custodians for a modest gratuity fee.
History is a huge part of who we are as a country. And Kenya has it all, loved learning more about the 1300 AD people to what is now our culture! Their ways of life that lead us to the civilization we have today.
I have many pictures of this place but I'll let you all learn about it when you visit.

Jumba la mtwana or( the big house of slaves) is located in Mombasa Kenya Mtwapa in kilifi county.
It's History
----------
There is no written documents to justify when the Jumba la mtwana ruins were constructed but from the excavation that was done by James Kirkman in 1972 tells us that they were constructed in the 14th century and abandoned in the 15th century.
The Jumba ruins comprises of three sections that's the house of the kitchen, house of many doors and the house of the cylinder,a tomb, 3mosques (small mosque, central mosque and mosque by the sea.) A market place and a court house.
The place was strategically choosen due the security reasons, precense of freshwater and the exposure to the north east and south east moonson wind that cooled the place from hot temperatures of the Coast
Reasons for it's abandonment
1) Freshwater turned saline after the water table broke.
2) Hostility from the neighboring community
3) tropical desease
4) trade distruption
In 1982 the ruins were gazetted by the national government and is now under the Kenya national museum

I had never heard of this place before 😆😆😆 so, after it was mentioned to me, I decided to visit so that I could stop being the only one in Mombasa who had never been there ....lol 😂
The reception was lovely though the payment process was long. You have to pay for you to enter the place, it's affordable 😉. There is a guide person who will be taking you round the place and giving you more information about things at the place.
It's a good place to have a picnic because there is also a beach which you can access once you've paid the entrance fee. Good and amazing place to take pictures if you have a camera or a good phone 🤣🤣. The place is big with just remains of houses where others are labelled while others aren't. The place is historical because even the trees at that place look way older than I am or will be in the next 20 years 😁.
There are dustbins around places so that the place can always be clean at all times, like no disposing of dirt around.
Next time I'll be visiting the place with a lot of my friends and show them around and take cool pictures .
N/B - The beach should be cleaned though, it was very dirty when I was there.

Third time here. I love the serenity of the place especially on the weekdays. I tour the Ruins, then settle on one of the benches and read or just write. You can also stroll the shore while you listen to a podcast or just silently lost in your own thoughts. They also sell some snacks like peanuts albeit expensively. The tickets are very affordable. You can also ask for a guide to take you through the Ruins and give you the history of each excavation. They have a small museum as well. The only downside is you cannot go farther down the beach because it is not safe. People have been mugged and harassed so be careful. The museum is also not well maintained.

If you are not a history buff, chances are that you may not enjoy the historical undertones of the ruins here. Other than its historical significance, it offers a quiet and serene place awash with the peace of an untamed forest. There is a certain sense of closeness to nature that grips you, with plenty of centuries old trees dotting the landscape. An ideal place for a picnic by the beach front. There's proper waste management, making the place clean. Customer service is excellent.

A historical place in Mtwapa, Kilifi County that dates back to the ancient years. It is a very interesting site with remarkable ruins of coral stone architecture, including houses and a mosque on the beach. The ruins themselves are pretty great to see, there are ample seats and places to sit and contemplate the views of the ruins and the ocean. There are many of the trees that are identified, including a Mosque by the Sea and House of Many Doors are labelled. It's a calm and peaceful spot if you are looking to get out of the city for the day. One can enjoy meals and an ocean view at a restaurant that's within after the walk. The entrance fee for Kenyan adults is 100ksh and 50ksh for kids.

This Hindu temple, named Shri Cutch Satsang Swaminarayan Temple, is a delightful destination. Its walls are adorned with vibrant murals that portray historical events and theological concepts.
