Noumea's Aquarium is a beautiful place that features both freshwater and saltwater fish, as well as an outdoor turtle pond. It also organizes various events to keep visitors informed about aquatic life.
This is one of the nicest aquariums anywhere, not as large as some of the more well known, but all looks in very healthy condition.
As a scuba diver a was impressed, it was as close as one can get to the real thing and was very much like some small reefs we've dives on.
Obviously very well cared for, miriad fish , large and small and definitely worth a visit.
We're hopefully back in Noumea again some time in 2022 and will certainly check it out again.
Highly recommended.

We were a little unsure of what to expect given the mixed reviews
Entry x2 Adults = 3900 - AUD $50 aprox
My main feedback is the Tahitian Prawn needs to be in a much bigger enclosure.
He /she can hardly turn around
#prawnneedsmoreroom !!
(Also a few to many lobsters in the tank)
We really enjoyed it - spent a couple of hours here and would recommend a few hours. Would also recommend taking your own lunch and drinks.
there is a few tanks that are definitely over crowded with animals that could easily be fixed and they could have a couple more larger fish and maybe a sting ray.
Generally we really enjoyed this experience and thought it was a good opportunity to see the marine life with out-too much commercial activities
We would love to see turtle feeding but appreciate nature vs nurture.
We feel kids would love this
It would be good to have a map on admissions

This was the highlight of our trip to Noumea. What a wonderful place. So well run, and all of the tanks were gleaming and in great condition. All the marine life was looking healthy and relaxed. I was so impressed with the stunning coral displays and tropical fish. Saw several species I'd never seen before. The prices for admission were very reasonable. It was a bit of a line to get in, and it was hot! A bit more shading out the front would be great, but it was not a huge wait. The gift shop had some great items for sale, and nothing was overpriced. Bus stop across the road and made the location very convenient. Loved the outside veiwing pool where the turtle were lots of seating to relax before resuming your tour. I highly recommend visiting here to anyone thinking of checking it out.

It may not be the largest aquarium you have ever been to, and also not the most complete, but what an amazing experience. Their big tank with sharks, mantas and a huge napoleon fish is beyond mesmerizing. We easily spent an hour watching and taking pictures. That was yesterday and were already thinking of doing it again... Also since it's very reasonably priced.
Jan-Michael Mewes — Google review
Great sealife variety. They lose 2 stars because the tanks are too small for so many species. These creatures need a lot more space for their general upkeep and well being.

Awesome experience here, so much variety of fish and turtles. Has a great souvenir shop at the end too which is quite reasonably priced! Would recommend spending at least a few hours here

Nice aquarium. It's not real large, but it's worth the admission. My wife and I took about an hour to go through it... we were a little rushed because we had to get back for a shuttle pickup. If not rushed, an hour and a half should be plenty to see everything.

This aquarium was great, they have good selections of living sea animals. There are plenty of carpark around. This premises also located across the road from a beach. There is a fast-food chain next door and few other shops and cafés nearby.

This was the most amazing aquarium I've been to. Well maintained and extremely well designed. The exhibits were of a high standard and very educational. Located in Anse Varta it was easy to get to from town on the #3 bus from Place de Moselle but unfortunately, due to road works, hard to find and enter.

Lovely aquarium for the family. We went as part of a tour group, so we had the privilege of entering in the morning outside of the 1pm opening time during the week.
The range of sea life was vast, and we were able to learn about the local sea life in Noumea.

Normally I don't like aquariums they are like zoos for me. But this one has mostly smaller aquatic animals in a very interesting and educational way. We attended an animation on the life cycle of the sea turtles which was interactive and excellent. And the turtles' feeding time was also amazing.

I recently visited the Aquarium des Lagons during a cruise, and I was truly impressed. The place is stunningly beautiful, impeccably clean, and the staff are exceptionally friendly. The diverse range of fish species is unlike anything I've seen in Australia. It was a truly special experience, and I want to express my gratitude for making it so memorable.

Exceeded expectations! We were really surprised at the variety and quality of the exhibits. Would be the first time I have seen an exhibit using real mangroves to provide a truly natural habitat for the sea life. The huge hawksbill turtles were great to see up close in the outdoor exhibit.
Highly recommend visiting

TOP NOTCH AQUARIUM - Relatively small but all inclusive for aquatic habitats. Animals were alive and well and the condition of the aquaria was second to none. It was similar to Monterey Bay Aquarium but on a smaller scale and yet there was so much to do and see. Great for families with in and outdoor exhibits and activities. Highly recommended and enjoy!

This is an excellent place - I have been to many aquariums and would rank this as my top 3! It is entertaining as well as educational, with plenty of information about each of the species. The highlight of my visit were the two huge tanks - one with a large tropical fish 🐠 glass and another floor-to-ceiling enormous tank with sharks, stingrays and plenty other vertebrates 🐟 and cartilaginous fish!

Definitely worth a visit - we came here while on a cruise and it was perfect to see lots of the coral and sea life that live in the area
The Tjibaou Cultural Centre is a striking, Renzo Piano-designed cultural center that looks like traditional Kanak structures. It offers a great introduction to Kanak culture, with displays on the diversity of South Pacific cultures as well as traditional artistic expressions and myths. There are also events and performances held throughout the year.
Interesting cultural facility with information in English and friendly staff. Allow a couple of hours to view inside and out. At the time of our visit they were setting up new exhibits. The Cafe and souvenir shop were closed.

An absolute gem! We were there for an afternoon and didn’t get to see everything it was that fascinating! The architecture itself and the grounds are way worth the visit! You’ll learn a ton about kanak culture and heritage. I was moved by their philosophies and beliefs in the role of Nature and it’s relationship to us.
The entrance fee is only $10 and you could be here all day!
(The reception area could use a coat of fresh paint)

Nice stop, not far from the Magenta domestic airport.
There's an entrance fee of $1000 per adult, but it seems well worth it. The Ranzo Piano structure is unique (although it could do with a bit of renovation).
Generally there is a café and some shops, but when we went there (Tuesday morning) they were closed.
The walk is not too hard, and is very accessible.
All in all, a great way to kill a few hours between a flight and the next, plus, we learned more about th Kanak culture.
On a side note, there's no shade on the walk from the airport. If it's hot and sunny, consider a bus/taxi.

The museum is a wonderful architectural space with numerous galleries featuring ancient and historic items. Outdoor trail with important local flora labeled and with good description of the significance of the plants. Two traditional structures are also found on property, which are of ceremonial importance.

This place is absolutely must visit when in Noumea! Located about 20 mins from the city canter you can get here by public bus, taxi or tour guide. Entry costs 1000 XPF for adults and 500 XPF for children and free for kids up to 12, however many hotels offer free admission coupons too. Located between Magenta and Tina bays, the site encompasses an art centre, a museum, performance spaces, a library, a landscaped park and more. Named after the Kanak political leader Jean-Marie Tjibaou - the Tjibaou Cultural Centre was constructed to celebrate the history and culture of the local Kanak people. It’s truly stunning in all aspects, sculptures, exhibitions, plants, views, buildings giving visitors unique taste of local culture, history , diversity and habits. Several main buildings host exhibitions and library, but date you to go outside and see the huts and even walk up the hill for the addition stunning views over the bay and islands are bonus. Souvenir shop and cafe was closed when we visited. It takes around 1.5 -2 hours to truly enjoy the place, so allow enough time to truly experience the place.
Raf K — Google review
It would be very informative if they had the expos in English as well. However, they do offer free WiFi, so one can use Google translate. It is a slow and tedious process and after the first village we just breezed through the exhibits and only read through the ones in English. Anyway, it was organized in a way to go through the villages first and then to follow the Path of the Kanak. However, the path ends where the exhibits end and you have to go all the way through the building again to start the Path. We did it backwards because we were tired.
Good if you can read French and some interesting artifacts from the Kanak culture!

Great museum.
Very interesting.
Daily guided tours daily in french and English but for the English tour you have to book in advance.
The best way there is via public transport (bus).
Admission is cheap and cost 500CPF each for us.

The museum is really quiet, a lot of traditional Kanak art and explanations about the first habitant of the main island. The architecture look great, several building like the local houses and a garden with local plants.

It’s a cool looking place but not very interesting, unfortunately. Got through the displays reasonably quickly as they weren’t particularly varied. Looks like it’s more of a training centre than a museum. Can read about the kanak history more in depth online. However, always good to support local industry/tourism. FYI the car park is a bit of a stroll from the actual buildings, so there is about a 10-15min walk to the buildings

Interesting cultural centre, set in beautiful grounds. The gardens are lovely and well worth a walk. The cultural centre buildings are worth seeing as well. The experience is let down because a lot of the amenities are closed. The centre would be a great place to shop for tourist/ cultural items and a cafe would be very welcome as the centre is quite isolated.
Îlot Maître is a small island that boasts a hotel serving as an entry point to the nearby marine reserve. With dimensions of just 700m by 150m, this islet provides visitors with access to stunning natural surroundings and exciting aquatic activities. Short boat ride from main marina in Numea
Amazing to swim with the turtles
Plenty of fish life to look at
We saw heaps of turtles 🐢, plus sea snakes and sting rays
My suggestion would be to take a picnic drinks and food from the mainland as there is heaps of que for the food and a long wait time for it to be made on the island
Dispute being “a Hilton” the food is not of an American Hilton standard at all and it takes ages to be served and for food to arrive.
The loungers and chairs are not enough for the amount of people and shade is a little limited. You can easily walk around the island on the sand and coral which would take maybe 20 mins but can be hot on the east side.
To be honest the island it’s self needs a lot of work and maintenance of the grounds and walk ways but the sea life is amazing and the staff are friendly and trying their best.
They definitely need more staff and better infrastructure and management to welcome and manage day guests and overnight guests
Worth a day trip - for the turtles and sea life, probably would not stay here again over night

Wonderful set up. I would probably do Duck island over this island as we saw more fish on Duck (canard) island; however, the facilities here are excellent and we saw turtles….
Flushing toilets available to the public. Cafe served reasonably priced food and drinks.
Excellent jetty and access. Water crystal clear. Very beautiful and well looked after by the Hilton hotel chain.

The resort itself was sadly below average standards. Rude and moody staff and clearly don't want to work there. (except for the friendly young french bloke behind the bar and the maintenance guys).
Pool bar was never open. Extortionate price for an average buffet. Remember to bring your own food and alcohol from the mainland as the prices in the resort are a rip-off. Zero entertainment in the evenings. Only thing to do is watch TV in your room (no english speaking movie channels).
The only reason I've given it 2 stars is for the beautiful sandy beaches and clear turquoise waters. Snorkelling with lots of turtles was the highlight.
Rob Godson — Google review
Ticks all the boxes for a relaxing few days spent in the sun, pool, snorkelling and other water activities. Over water bungalows awesome with plenty of turtles swimming underneath, although we also had a resident sea sneak hiding under the floorboards on our deck which was a little disconcerting! Make sure you bring snacks/lunches but not a lot of space in bar fridge (and no freezer) as we were not keen on buffet for brekkie, lunch and dinner! Pool opens at 9.30, and by 10am all sun loungers are reserved with peoples towels for the day, and I doubt the resort was even half full. Friendly staff and worth staying at least 3 days, but not much more. Added bonus that despite 10am checkout we were still able to spend the day using resort facilities and catch an afternoon ferry back to Noumea.
The island île aux Canards is a protected New Caledonian island with white sand beaches, a marine reserve, and a restaurant. With ample entertainment options and stunning views of the surrounding ocean, the island is perfect for relaxing in nature.
Beautiful island. full of corals and fishes. Great place for snorkeling. We used the glass boat to get there and it's quite close to the shore. It is also fun to walk around the small island. We had such a great time there.

The place itself is beautiful and good for swimming, snorkelling and relaxing on the beach. Heaps of coral which is great, but on the beach it’s sharp so wear suitable shoes. The restaurant and facilities are limited and parts of it quite poorly maintained. The island is tiny so it would be a struggle to spend more than a few hours there. But it’s a very quick dash from the mainland in the water taxi, and back.

If you are staying at Noumea, going to Duck Island is a no brainer. The best way to get there is taking the glass boat from the pier in front of the Burger King. In my view this island is better than others that are usually better rated (eg Amedée and Maitre). The corals are abundant and very close to the shore. Even my six year old kid could easily go and see all sorts of corals and fishes.

After reading all the reviews online for Duck Island, we decided to spend a couple hours on Duck Island, If you want to enjoy the good side of the Beach you will have to pay for Beach chairs (as all the reviews advise they are expensive) unfortunately, they do have the nest side of the Island where they clear the beach from all the Coral and rocks.
We opted not to hire one but instead explore the little Island, there are very few spots to sit and enjoy the water but depending on the weather the spots are not worth swimming.
There is a restaurant on the Island with a few good selections of cocktails, a little expensive compared to the main island.
Also great views of Noumea from the Island with photo opportunities.

I was surprised to see how close it is from Anse Vata beach but I love the island for its lovely, clear water. It is not really a white sandy beach but you can enjoy the lovely swimming session and snorkeling as well. Too bad when I came here it was just a day after the storm so the visibility was zero. But I still enjoy the day out here.
There is a cafe here as well where you can order some drinks and finger food. And you can rent the umbrella as well as the snorkeling gear if you don't have yours.

Only 5mins from Noumea (1500xpf by taxi boat on the mainland - look for the yellow/red flag) but full of tourists. Beaches covered in dead coral which is surprisingly painful so bring water shoes! Snorkelling is pretty good but better on the further islands so not my favourite. Would come if you are short on time/need convenience. Popular with young families.
Alexandra Ho — Google review
As someone suggested in their review, most of the coral reefs are dead but they are still refuge to lots of colourful fishes. I snorkelled there for more than an hour and was lucky to swim with turtles.
Not worth renting anything from the island.
No fresh water bath available. It is only available on the mainland beaches (5 min away by a ferry). Lovely helpful people on the mainland beach at Rock sail stop ( Hop on Hop off bus). Very hot and two chairs and an umbrella cost about 46A$.

Such a beautiful tiny island !
There is a little restaurant bar in the center of the island, so you can order food and drinks here but be ready to know that nothing is cheap in there !
To be honest with you, I was quite shocked ?! Or let's say surprised ? By the toilet there, there is no water to flush the toilet but only sands to bury your own excrements !

Anse Vata Bay boasts a stunning coastline, complete with a long stretch of pristine white sand and lush palm tree groves providing ample shade for picnic-goers. The beach is an ideal tourist destination, offering numerous activities such as kite and windsurfing on its calm waters. Children can safely swim in the peaceful currents that extend all the way to Rocher a la Voile.
The beach and the promenade are a great area with a nice atmosphere. We were pleasantly surprised with how lively the area was particularly at night. This was the best beach, and probably the most beautiful one, that I have ever been to in my life. The water was a crystal clear aqua, warm, (about 24 degrees in May), and so clear you could see every ripple of sand underfoot even at waist or chest level, and watch the small tropical fish shoals passing every little while.
The palms and white sand were amazing too, and the people happy and friendly.

The sunset here is stunning . Lots of nice restaurants in La Baie des citrons.
Plage de la Baie des Citrons is a tranquil and serene beach with a peaceful ambiance, adorned by tall trees that provide natural shade. The crystal-clear waters of the beach are ideal for children to swim and snorkel as they are sheltered from strong currents. With coral reefs located at both ends, it's an excellent spot for snorkeling enthusiasts to witness an array of fish species. The best part is that it doesn't cost anything to enjoy this water activity.

The Maritime Museum of New Caledonia is an informative museum about the local maritime history. It contains a permanent collection of original objects and documents as well as temporary exhibitions on maritime themes.
This is one of the best displays of Maritime information I’ve seen, the collections of shipwreck items is amazing, we spent a long time there and I need to Mention there is so much fun interactive things for children they won’t want to leave.

Parc Zoologique Et Forestier is a zoological and forestry park located in Nouvelle in the north-west of New Caledonia. It is home to a variety of indigenous and exotic animals, including birds, reptiles, and small mammals. The park also features a botanical garden and a zoo.
Managed to squeeze in a brief park walk on our last day & if you like beautiful plants and ample foliage to provide shade this is a great place to chill out - bring a picnic lunch there are lots of spots to settle on but no feeding the animals!!
It was nice that the endemic fauna are close enough to really appreciate as I don’t think a cagou in the wild would have let us get so close.
That said, some of the bird enclosures are a bit small though & we only checked out the endemic section so we never witnessed what others have mentioned about mammals being kept in very confined spaces which possibly exist in other sections.
It’s quite hilly and the further you descend the longer you’ll inevitably need to ascend so keep this in mind if walking on inclines or declines are problematic.
Would loved to have spent longer & made a half day of it

Wonderful down hill walk through gardens with different birds in cages. Some of the info relating to the birds was in English. Information on permanent exhibition in building at top of the hill(all in french). There were different pathways to follow that did not necessitate walking down the hill. Nice large park to take a walk, but nothing too fancy regarding the animals. In particular the cages are quite basic and not really pretty. Petting zoo seems to be closed and has been for some time. In face of the small fee it might be worth a visit, but Nouméa has much better attractions if you have limited time. E.g. the Lagoon aquarium was otherworldly compared to this park/zoo.

This is a great experience for the whole family. The park is huge and there's much more than just the animals, with beautiful forest walks and areas to explore. Visitors can find an excellent selection of fish, fruits, vegetables, crab and prawns on offer daily. The market is not overrun with tourist souvenirs, making it an authentic experience for those looking to immerse themselves in local culture.
Best spot in town to buy fresh food, and 🐟 fish. Fruit, vegetables, fish, 🦀 crab and 🦐 prawns are the best and fresh daily. Heaps of parking. Stalls also sell traditional clothes n stuff.

Worth a visit to see the local produce and seafood. Easy walk from the cruise ship / ferry terminal. Good chance to buy souvenirs if nothing is open. Prices looked high, as expected in a tourist oriented market.

An excellent local market that is not swamped with tourist brig a brac with plenty of fish as well as fruits and vegetables for sale at good prices.
Being centrally located it is right in the heart of the city and easily accessible by public transportation.

Very happy to buy glasses and plates as souvenirs!

City Market has fresh seafood in the early morning and a vibrant fresh produce market until about 11:00 am or so. There are stalls selling tourist items and some locally produced items as well. You will also find a cage and free wifi on site. The City Market is across the street from a bus station.

It’s always nice to visit markets. Here you can get a lot of fresh produce and seafood.
Also, some stalls that sell bread and pastries.
Rebecca Lee — Google review
It is a relatively small market that appears to be frequented mostly by locals who do their fresh fruit, vegetable, bread and fish/meat shopping. We love wandering around such markets and it appeared other tourists were doing the same.
It’s a great spot to pick up a few fresh food supplies if you are staying somewhere you can prepare your own meals; or to buy fresh fruit to snack on. We bought some local pineapple and bananas just for that purpose and a bag of the best limes for our Gin & Tonics back at our resort in the evenings!
The market includes a number of stalls selling clothing, jewellery, arts & crafts and local souvenirs. This just added something else to see on top of the fresh food.
The market is located just over from the main Moselle bus terminal so we were lucky to be able to get there on the #3 local bus service from our resort on Anse Vata Beach.
This is not a must-do place to visit. It will appeal to those who like small local markets in general or if you need to pick up some fresh food supplies for your stay.

I drove there on Friday morning around 9:30. The seafood shop was in a different building, so I went there on a different day.
I bought some lettuce and other things that I didn't often see at the supermarket because they were selling them. It was a hotel with a kitchen, so fresh vegetables were helpful.
There were takoyaki banners, but no shops were open.
There were not many souvenirs that I would want to buy.
I think it's a good place to go to see the atmosphere of the morning market.
MARIKO — Google review
It is a must visit, you can get some souvenirs, local produce, and seafood. Rather overpriced (as expected) since they tailor to tourists. Prices are typically 20-30% higher than in Australia (1 medium pineapple approx 10-13 AUD, 1kg bananas 10AUD). Souvenirs are made in China. For local crafts I was told to browse smaller art stores in the city but I didn’t have enough time to investigate.

Good place to buy veggies and local fruits, You can also buy souvenir's. Try local banana's they were good.
Inder Chauhan — Google review
As a tourist, was a tad bit disappointed not seeing any action going on here. Was expecting the local market to be filled with locals doing their morning shopping, and a fair bit more action than what I had. Maybe it's because it was a Sunday when we visited.
As a local, there's not much selection whatsoever. Many stalls have since closed, leaving the space empty. Only a couple of vegetables, fish, fruits, and baked goods stalls are left. The rest, very much tourist souvenir good stands.
You'll likely spend about 20 mins here, walking around, snapping photos, do some shopping, enjoy some coffee, and bask in the sea breeze, before moving on to your next stop.
Flo Yeow — Google review
Stop here for fresh vieneoisserie, baked bread, coffees! Huge selection of fresh produce!
The locals sell their wares as well! Selection includes tshirts, sarongs, handmade soaps, vanilla bead pods/seasonings, fans, magnets, Plumeria flower headbands, jewelry, canvas tote bags and trinkets. One little section of stalls but enough if you’re looking for some souvenirs. They take AUS dollars and most folks take credit cards (mostly Visa, some take Amex).
Nice little market.
(On a side note- we visited the Johnston grocery store before we stopped here and found magnets, postcards and a few trinkets- along with awesome chocolates and snacks). It was great being able to use our Credit card to pay and not convert currency or pull from an ATM.
Luv2 Travel — Google review
Must visit for tourist to meet locals selling fresh fruits and vegetables, art and craft, souvenir, fish, prawns and crabs. Most resorts don't allow cooking so you may not want to buy alot. You can buy pineapple, pawpaw, fresh coconut water, banana, oranges and lots of other fruits. I don't understand why someone doesn't cooked fish and chips to try at the market.
There is a little cafe in the middle to buy breakfast and FREE WiFi is also available. Bus stop is across the road so you can go back to your resort or cruise liner. The market is closed on Mondays and opens at 5am and closes at midday.

The central square park known as Place des Cocotiers is a charming and shaded area that's perfect for taking a stroll. It features walking paths, a central pavilion, and an iconic band rotunda dating back to the late 1800s. At one end of the square, visitors can enjoy petanque or play on a giant chessboard. The other end boasts lush botanical gardens with towering palms and trees. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the park.

Interesting place with local vibes ! On a weekend there is a musical kiosk that plays a local music! The band is very vibrant! You can hear local song! It was a great experience.
There is also a flea and street markets . People sell all kind of stuff. You can potentially find a little souvenir that you want to bring home. Everything is very cheap there.
There are also few food tracks.

The Musée de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale is a museum in Caillou that presents a unique perspective of World War II. The exhibits showcase local history and the impact of the war on New Caledonia's people, going beyond typical war museums. The collection includes objects used by soldiers and civilians during the conflict, as well as extracts from diaries written by those who lived through it.
A great yet small exhibition, expertly curated, interactive and educational

A great little museum, mainly in French but with enough translations to satisfy English speakers. Some interesting facts about the changes wrought on expanding the pre-war population of 15,000 to over a million at its peak, including 17,000 US servicemen arriving on just one day!
John Sheridan — Google review
Lots of information and displays (many with English translations) and iPad for translated tour. Packs a lot into a small space for an extremely reasonable price.

A great museum which is much more than a collection of military memorabilia. It's more a fascinating journey through the cultural changes that came about in New Caledonia during the war, particularly the results of the large US presence there. The Indigenous peoples had their lives transformed and at the end of the war there was no going back to the oppressive, racist status quo ante. It's also an easy walk from the cruise ship terminal, which was a bonus!

A terrific museum that deals with the people of New Caledonia and those who past through during the war and how it affected life during and after the war, which goes beyond most war museums which focus on the conflict itself.

We had visited already visited 3 other Museums in Noumea and this was the last on our list. We were not disappointed. The cost to enter is minimal (just make sure you have 200CFP cash with you as they don't accept credit cards) The museum is full of informative and often interactive displays the majority of which have been translated into English. Some brilliant memorabilia housed in glass displays plus excellent timelines and wall charts of the events which led to the 2nd World War and the part played by New Caledonia which was strategically placed in the Pacific Ocean. I would have liked an English handout - but that is my only negative comment. Highly recommended.

Prom, also known as promenade or formal, is a significant event in many high schools and colleges. It is usually held at the end of the school year, where students dress up in fancy clothes and dance with each other. This occasion includes various traditions such as taking photographs beforehand and exchanging corsages and boutonnieres. While some schools have strict rules regarding attire and behavior, others allow students to express themselves freely.

The Musée de la Ville de Nouméa is a colonial-style museum located in New Caledonia that offers exhibits on the history of the region, including the impact of nickel mining and both world wars. The museum is situated within a heritage building and provides information on early life in Noumea as well as how events in France affected the Pacific colony. Visitors can enjoy both temporary and permanent displays that are informative and include English translations.
Great museum with friendly staff. Limited crowds meant time could be spent looking at exhibitions for as long as you like which was nice.
Interesting to learn about the political history of the country. The WW1 exhibition was definitely a highlight. Also be sure to check out the beautiful garden out back.

A very nice museum dealing with the early history of Noumea and New Caledonia.
Downstairs in the cellar (via a set of very narrow stairs) was an exhibit on France and French colonial forces in WW1 and the Karnak insurrection during the war.
They also have a very nice model of Noumea at the turn of the 20th Century/late 19th century.
For the real early history and maritime involvement the maritime museum is better, and WW2 history is covered in a separate museum.
Cost is 200CPF and includes an audio guide

The Catholic cathedral dedicated to St. Joseph is a beautiful and peaceful place to visit in Noumea. The cathedral has an historic carved altar and 26 stained glass windows, making it a picturesque addition to the cityscape. Dedicated to Saint Joseph and built by convict labour between 1887~97 based on plans drawn up by a convict architect. Consecrated in 1893, before the towers and facade were completed, it became the seat of the Archdiocese of Nouméa in 1966.
it was originally intended to add spires to the tops of the towers, but the idea was abandoned given the prevalence of cyclones in this region.

Very old Roman catholic cathedral looking gorgeous! Lots of stained glass windows with biblical figurines. Cathedral us not always open, so need to look for hours to visit inside.
There is a statue of Joan de Arc in armour that was gifted to the cathedral in 1901.
This cathedral sort of reminded me Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Rouen but without the spires on the tops of the towers and much smaller.

tl; dr.: Beautiful and grand church, but not open to public
It's located on top of a fairly steep hill, so it's a bit of a trek, especially on a hot day. We were unable to go inside though, so I'm not sure if it's actually open outside of mass times, You can peer through the iron wrought gates though, and it does look very beautiful inside, with stained glass and wooden pews.
This place is an undisputed gem and personally, I found it to be the most beautiful and interesting place in Noumea. I was surprised to discover that it wasn't on the local bus tours. It's a long and steep walk, so unless walking is your thing, I'd recommend getting transport. The views are amazing and the road up there is safe to walk by. There's also a bush trail back down that is very pretty. Included are stations of the cross. Entry is free but donations are requested. There don't appear to be toilets or other facilities but there is a small car park. It's not busy. The gardens are spectacular too. Highly recommended.
