Menjangan Island, located in the West Bali National Park, is a hidden gem for nature enthusiasts. This unspoiled island boasts a rich marine reserve that attracts divers and snorkelers with its phenomenal coral garden. The area is also home to a diverse wildlife population, including Javan deer and Bali Starling. Unlike the bustling tourist spots in Bali, Menjangan offers a tranquil escape with pristine beaches and lush jungles.
The best place for snorkeling I've ever had so far. Not much to see in island it self , but, the real beauty is under the water. Will cost you about 350K - 500K per person for transportation by boat. Try at least oncenin your life time,,you wont regret it

If you're not planning to go into the water, there isn't much to do here. The lack of shops and poorly lit (and potentially dirty toilets were disappointing). The only highlight was the "check-in" spot at the welcome sign, which seemed to be a popular photo opportunity where throngs of local tourists stopped by.
If you're looking for activities or amenities beyond water-related ones, this may not be the ideal place for you. However, if you're solely interested in beach and water activities, you might find it enjoyable, especially as it is a destination for snorkelling in Bali.
As a friendly reminder, don’t leave your litter on this beautiful island, which is home to majestic deers 🕊️

Please read on... Are we talking about the island or the marine park? The island it's beautiful and so is the surrounding shore line. My reason is the extreme admission fee for tourists. Probably just as many local tourists from Java, (very very wealthy tourists)
Local price (national) 10000 IDR or $1 AUD
Tourist price
200000 IDR or $20 AUD, $30 at weekends per day..!! Thats 20-30 time more expensive.
I am all for protecting the environment but I can't see where the money is going... elsewhere park fees have been for single of multiple days and you got a keyring as proof of payment which is nice.
No one likes getting ripped off especially me so from that perspective I give it 3 stars. Today is Sunday and I am not diving there today. How do we even know the dive shops are declared every visitor! We have no token.
Ok the marine park, yes very beautiful, so dived very similar to other parts of Bali, some I bit more interesting.. Not a great deal of marine life... plenty of the usual fish you see all over Indonesia.. but not as my creatures as I saw in Amed. Well worth a visit, but the park fees are a sting in the tail.

This small island is famous for its snorkeling spots and deers. You can reach this island from Banyuwangi in East Java and Bali by boat. There's a Hindu Temple on this island for the Balinese Hindu people to pray. The corals are pretty with numerous fish and other sea creatures.
Griselda Merrie — Google review
It’s a government protected island which means a lot of living coral and colorful fishes you can see while snorkeling and diving. It’s 30 minutes by boat to the island from Permuteran and you are not allowed to stay in the island as it’s protected. The snorkeling cost you around 350 and diving 600 thousands and I tel you, it’s worth every penny.

A small island located in west Bali, most beautiful place i've ever known! The name is menjangan island. I think because in this island there are so many deer or local people called "menjangan". The fun fact is this island without village it makes the vibes is so peacefull. You can diving here or just praying.

We did a day trip snorkelling from Naya Gawana Resort. Robert runs the dive centre there. He's a great guy and very generous. The snorkelling was excellent. A 40 minute boat trip with a guide. They also provided fruit for a snack between snorkels. We did two locations and both were great. Would recommend this location and the resort.

We had a fantastic day out snorkelling around Menjangan Island, with lunch on the island itself. Highly recommend going with a guide who knows the area and can help you find Nemo and thousands of other fish.
Biorock Pemuteran in Bali is a captivating underwater site for snorkeling and photography. The area features a 300-meter stretch of biorock formations, including casts of deities and bikes that have become vibrant habitats for marine life. These structures can be explored at various depths, making it an exciting experience for snorkelers.
beautiful reef restoration! nice for snorkeling and diving. lots of beautiful creatures underwater ❤️

Amazing snorkelling here - a fantastic initiative. We were very impressed by the variety and colour of both the coral and fish. So stoked to see lots of clown fish in their anenome homes. Visibility was excellent and the sand is nice to walk on too.
Ben Collins — Google review
Biorock is a great project to restore the reef. They have a variety of objects which are powered by electric current to stimulate the growth of the corals. You can find them in all sizes, from tiny to big. It is not a huge colorful reef, but find a great spot for snorkling and observing all different kinds of coral and fish. If you are lucky, you might even see a turtle!
Patrick Abc — Google review
The biorock project is quite awesome, we could see the sunken biorocks with various shapes and sizes while snorkeling. They're close, perhaps only 20-30m from shore, but unfortunately they are quite deep, so can't quite see the living creatures from the surface. Waves were quite choppy when we were there and visibility was a bit blurry. There's a floating hut where you can have a bit of rest after fighting the current...
Leon Kawidjaja — Google review
Very nice for snorkeling and not far from the shore. Enter at the flag for a safe entry for you and the corals. (There is also a sign written)
I'm not a diver but for me it was really nice and many different fish including a pufferfish one day.

We had great snorkeling, the beach was clean and water super clear. Some plastics appeared in the afternoon but fortunately only a few objects, not spoiling the overall experience. Beach was not crowded, just 10-20 other snorkelers when we were around.
The project itself is cool, it's nice to see that locals are also able to stimulate tourism business in proper way, not by scamming tourists

Hmmmm depends, the concept is excellent and they are doing an amazing job!! I dived here and the diving was interesting but very beginners and average. Not biorocks fault but my dive operator should have taken me somewhere else.
Definitely worth a visit and donation. Snorkeling would be pretty good too.
Mr Smith — Google review
This was the best part of our recent trip to West Bali. We went snorkelling on the bio rock everyday, sometimes twice. Each time it was a unique experience. You can easily hire mask, snorkel & fins at Karang Divers, which is next to the Biorock office.
The beauty of diving on the biorock is that it is less than 50m off the beach. It is a rocky shoreline at low tide but there’s a sandy section opposite the Biorock office.
Once you are under the water it is like another world, we spent over an hour each time floating above the underwater sculptures surrounded by schools of colourful tropical fishes. One time we had a school of fishes who adopted us following our every move as we swam from sculpture to sculpture, nibbling on our fingers and legs. Another time we were on a coral outcrop watching a sea turtle graze on the reef.
We found the best times to dive on the Biorock was early in the morning at low tides. The afternoon dives when there wasn’t much turbulence and sediment were just as good.
If you in Pemuteran than you absolutely have to swim out and explore the Biorock - it is one of the best experiences we’ve ever had in Bali.

Pemuteran Beach is a beautiful, sandy beach located in the north coast of West Bali. The calm waters and diverse wildlife make it an ideal place to snorkel or dive, and the beach is also close to some interesting attractions.
Small beautiful beach. You can snorkel here. The beach is narrow and covered with black sand. Take care of walking into the sea because the floor gets deep after you walk a few feet into the waters.

This is infuriating!!! And a massive problem not isolated only to Bali but most of Asia.
Litter, rubbish, plastic all over on shores of this paradise island.
It all starts on the ground level … lack of education, no personal responsibility, no penalties, no effective system in place to recycle ♻️
People are burning pails of plastic in their back gardens at night everywhere I go in Bali!
There’s so many things that can be done to not only educate but also implement a system using media and big chain companies etc….

It is difficult to judge, it is actually a beautiful beach with black lava sand, but what a mess they make of it, the sea is indeed full of plastic. When will people understand that if you clean it up, people will feel more comfortable coming. Give that a priority and it will pay for itself.
Ad Kruijne — Google review
It's fine.... it's a black sand beach with lots of lava rock deposits. Don't forget to visit the cute little mangrove. "The Permuteran Tree" on the far end. Bio Rock project is interesting. Worth a visit, but if you really want to see the coral a bit more alive go to Menjangan island
Anthony LaCasella — Google review
very nice place, mix of black and yellow sand, the reef is alright - there is a project to re-grow it and so far they do a good job. Nice sunset.
Fritz Wiedrich — Google review
Disappointing. After walking the beach yesterday, my shoes and pants were caked/smeared with an amalgam of beach tar and sand. Floating trash visible from shore, including dead rat.
Despite this, I went for a swim (with mask and snorkel) just after sun-up next morning in nearly calm seas. After getting out past the 10-metre band of turbidity and flotsam close to shore, the water clears up a bit, but is still cloudy with what appears to be suspended dust. Yes, the coral is growing, and yes, plenty of fish were present.
While I encountered no obvious jellies, I felt plenty of "stingers" so I recommend a rash guard, along with mask and snorkel, to minimize direct contact of seawater with your eyes.

Irina Kulikova — Google review
As a beach, it’s volcanic sand so don’t expect pristine white with crystal clear water. The sunken artificial reefs make for good snorkeling just offshore. I wouldn’t stay anywhere east of this beach if you wanted water access. Save your money and stay somewhere with a great pool and just walk down to this ‘beach’.
The reason why you go to Pemuteran is for the snorkeling and diving off Menjangang (deer) island. You’ll have to pay for a tour but that is where the magic is at.
Caitlin M — Google review
We spent a few days in Pemuteran and we love the quiet and tranquil beach. Great view of both beach and mountains. Many snorkeling spots with restored corals and many fish, easily accessible from beach. Follow the marked entry/exit sign, e.g. near Amertha resort. Fantastic biorock structures to the west of the corrals, waves are stronger but still enjoyable. Visibility varies, can be a bit murky sometimes. East section of the beach is dirty with plastic waste - some storm drains end there, but village kids happily swim there. Good sunset from east end of the beach, you can see Mt.Baluran in east Java from there.

The beach at Pemuteran is a large bay. it is a serene sandy beach, with volcanic (grey) sand. The sea is calm and free of strong currents and waves - perfect for swimming and snorkelling. It has rocks at either end of the bay, which are exposed at low tide (beware of the sea urchins). It is unique in that it has coral reefs within 50m of the shore. The reefs are protected no-fishing zones, and full of friendly curious colourful fish. It is also home to the Biorock project, the largest reef restoration in the world.
There are a couple of beach warungs but generally there are only a few people on the beach no hawkers or massage huts unlike beaches in the south of Bali. There is also very little rubbish in the water or on the beach, which makes a rarity for swimming and walking on the beach.
The Turtle Hatchery Project in Pemuteran Bay, Bali is a must-visit for those interested in conservation efforts. Operated by dive operators in collaboration with the local community, this project aims to protect sea turtles. Visitors can learn about the process of saving, incubating, and releasing turtle eggs while also having the opportunity to witness or even participate in these activities during the right season. The entrance fee contributes to running the project and provides access for a week.
Nice people and sad story about big turtle

Absolutely lovely place to visit, the turtles are so tiny! They keep one large turtle who is a permanent guest at the project who you also get to feed. We were unlucky as the baby turtles still had 2/3 weeks to go before they were released back into the wild so if you want to participate in that you have to time it right. It's a bit of a long walk to get to, but overall a very lovely experience and your ticket is valid for a whole week's entrance.
Nicole Hudspeth — Google review
Kudos to those who are actually doing the work!If anyone wants to help, learn, understand, do pop by.
There's a Rp 40k entrance fee, which would help run the place. And what you get is information about how the eggs are saved, incubated, hatched, put into a tank, then released. Absolutely worth it.
If you're lucky, you'll get to be involved in that cycle. Or, at least, get to witness the little ones. Just make sure you're there in the right season.

Really good experience. They receive and hatch hundreds of eggs, saving them from being eaten by dogs, snakes and birds. Great to see them and know that they will be released back into the see to continue the cycle. A really great contribution to maintaining the turtle population of north Bali. Really nice and worthy project. Just a small project ran by a young man who wants to do good.
He is paying the local fisherman for the eggs and incubating them by himself. With his 80% hatching rate, most of the eggs will survive, and baby turtles will come to live.
Just go here and support the project.

Water very warm plan to be submerged for maybe only around 15 mins but lovely wooden pagodas for sitting around and taking in the lovely tranquil environment.
If you bring food, use a locker. The monkeys are pretty savvy when it comes to food.
Mostly locals bathing, we did not feel that we were disrupting the tranquil atmosphere though. Water very clean as were the grounds.

Secluded, uninhabited small island covered in all white sand. Nothing much to be done around this place on its own, so the best course to visit in my opinion is if you also book a trip to Menjangan Island from Sumberkima.
