The Humble Administrator's Garden is the largest classical garden in Suzhou, dating back to the Ming emperor Zhengde. It is divided into three distinct areas and is one of over 50 gardens still in existence today. Along with eight other gardens, it represents the finest examples of Chinese Mountain and Water gardens. These gardens are known for their exquisite craftsmanship, artistic elegance, and rich cultural implications.
The exemplary masterpiece among all Chinese gardens. Make this your #1 priority coming to Suzhou.
Andrew Kean Guan — Google review
If I had to name this, "humble" is probably not a word that would spring to mind. Perhaps the Administrator might have been humble, but the garden is anything but. There is an explanation in the museum as to why there are so many nice (previously) private gardens in and around SuZhou. Think "keeping up with the Jones'". So maybe the Administrator wasn't all that humble after all, just like his garden!
We went on an "off-peak" weekday, but it was still quite crowded. Nevertheless, we were able to enjoy the various "rooms" that the garden is divided up into without too much crowding. As it was spring time, there were quite a few flowers out. Overall, this was a very pleasant place to spend a half day.
The only reason that I didn't give this five stars is that even though it was an off-season weekday when we visited, some of the paths were quite narrow and it was - at times - a bit difficult to squeeze past other park visitors. I personally probably wouldn't visit during a busy time - unless crowds are your thing.

The oriental scenery is so be beautiful, not recomended to buy souvenirs inside the garden, i would suggest to somewhere 3pm, then exit at 5.00pm, then wait for night event to see the lighting from 6pm.

There are multiple traditional Suzhou-style Chinese gardens in Suzhou, and 9 of these gardens have been inscribed in World Heritage list. The most famous and notable one is the Humble Administrator's Garden. It will take you about two to three hours to finish the walk throughout most of the places of interest. It's mandatory to make a reservation of your arrival time during a busy time like summer.
It is recommended to join a tour guide service to further understand the background history and trivia behind this garden and the story of the founder. The complimentary tour guide service lasts for half an hour, guiding you through some of the most crucial buildings in the garden. You can understand more by requesting for a paid tour guide service.
There are lots of photo opportunities in the garden, and you get to experience more when the history of these incredible buildings is revealed. The current price is RMB$70 in the off-peak season and RMB$80 in the peak season.

One of the must visit attractions in Suzhou.
This attraction boasts of a traditional house from ancient times with beautifully manicured gardens. The bonsai garden is especially impressive.
Remember to book your tickets well in advance. RMB70 with special prices tickets for elderly and half price for off peak seasons.

The Humble Administrator's Garden (拙政園) is the largest, finest and most beautiful garden in south China. This famous garden was built in Suzhou (蘇州) in Ming Dynasty (明朝). The designer use spaces planning and incorporated both natural and man-made materials to present various but elegant views that visitor need to discover with mind. I strong recommend to hire a tour guide to lead you into this beautiful world and explain those astonish designs.
It is better to put 3-4 hours in the itinerary to enjoy the garden.
An important thing need to be mentioned: There are lots of cheaters selling the fake ticket in very cheap price. Don't be fraud. The true ticket is sold only in the official entrance.

This Garden from Suzhou is one of the 4 most representatives and famous landscape heritage spots from all China. It was created here a small piece of heaven on the earth. The water, the green and all the artefacts in this perimeter are genuinely disposed in an authentic compound. A huge effort to create a masterpiece. Highly recommended for tourists, wherever are they coming from!

Awesome garden! I heard it was the one I would need to go to if I could only choose one and I did not regret it. The crowds couldn't be helped considering it's China and it's a UNESCO heritage site. Definitely go on a weekend. The museum and Pingjiang road are all pretty close by and there are some eats available too.
The Suzhou Museum, designed by renowned architect I. M. Pei, is a treasure trove of Chinese artifacts, showcasing calligraphy and ancient craftwares. Nestled in the network of waterways that define Suzhou's unique cityscape, the museum offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the region.

-many tourists, I will suggest to go during weekday....

One of I.M.Pei's masterpieces. Every corner I turned delivered an amazing spatial experience. The architect's sensitive response to the vernacular architecture and integration with existing historical buildings makes me a very very happy person. The apertures are also to die for. At the time I went (August 2018) there was a cool contemporary calligraphy exhibition on. The rest of the exhibits are archaeological crafts and artefacts, well curated. One of the better museums I've been to in the area.
IMPORTANT NOTE 1***: Make sure you book your ticket online at least 1 week prior!!! The tickets are free, you just need to reserve ahead of time to skip the queue. (I managed to skip the queue because my grandpa pulled the elderly trick and jumped the line entirely, bringing me with him). Don't fall for tour guides trying to sell you tickets to the museum. Even if you waited during weekday it'd only be 30mins max wait. It's free!!!
IMPORTANT NOTE 2***: I went through the museum "backwards". Start by going in and turning left towards the stairs and waterfall.

Best museum in Suzhou, beautiful architecture and great collection. The New Suzhou museum was designed by I. M. Pei, a famous architect who designed the glass pyramid for the Louvre.
With a perfect combination in art culture and design in modern architecture form, this museum is very popular in tourists. The exhibition objects flourished in history & culture of Suzhou city from prehistoric time to the modern day.

The Master of the Nets Garden is a classical 12th-century garden featuring pavilions built around water, and it hosts seasonal evening performances. My 4 year old daughter went crazy when she went through the 假山 with so many 'mazes tunnels and bridges, it was awesome and you never know where you will end up surfacing. The public toilets were surprisingly good as well, with parents room and even a nursery room. The fish pond was also great with many huge fishes. My childhood favourite has now become my daughter's favourite Chinese garden as well.

Though somewhat on the small side, this garden more than makes up for it by packing a lot of beauty in a small area. The waters are such a deep blue/green, the trees are well-manicured, the buildings are situated beautifully, everything just seems to fit just right here. It also felt less crowded than the Humble Administrator’s, Lingering, and Lion Grove Garden (perhaps that was an anomaly) so the visit was more relaxing. Highly recommended and well worth the price of admission

One of my favorite gardens in Suzhou. 网师园 (Wang Shi Yuan, Master-of-Nets garden) is smaller than Liu Yuan (Lingering garden) but it's probably more charming. Highly recommended.
Tiger Hill Pagoda is a 7-story hilltop pagoda that was originally part of a temple built in the 10th century. It is a cultural symbol of Suzhou and features the famous Yunyan Pagoda, also known as Huqiu Tower, which leans at an angle. The site also includes the Sword Pool, believed to be the final resting place for the king's swords. This ancient attraction holds historical and folklore significance and has been praised by poet Su Dongpo.

One of the best place to visit if you are in Suzhou. I think morning hours are the best time to visit this place.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lingering Garden is one of the four most famous classical gardens of Suzhou. The garden features Pingtan and Guqin music, as well as harmonious layout of temples, statues, rockeries, halls, bridges, and ponds. It covers almost six acres and is divided into four sections: East, West, Central and North.
Also known as Liuyuan (留园), dates back to the Ming Dynasty and has a history of over 400 years. It was originally built as a private residence and has undergone several renovations and expansions over the centuries. Its intricate layout, which includes various halls, pavilions, rockeries, ponds, and winding corridors, is designed to create a sense of harmony between man-made structures and natural scenery, with carefully arranged vegetation and water features enhancing its aesthetic appeal.

Explore the timeless beauty of Lingering Garden in Suzhou. Dating back to 1593 during the Ming Dynasty, Liuyuan showcases Qing style architecture, majestic natural rock sculptures and idyllic scenery. Despite a chilly (-4°C) Sunday afternoon, this classical masterpiece effortlessly captivated my admiration, undeterred by the coldest embrace of winter. Winter entrance fee is only ¥45. Some areas are under renovation when I visited.

The Liuyuan garden is undoubtedly one of the most exquisite gardens among the numerous UNESCO cultural heritage sites in Suzhou. I had the pleasure of visiting this garden many years ago, and it quickly became my favourite. I highly recommend visiting in autumn when the leaves on the trees turn to beautiful colours. Unlike the Humble Administrator's Garden, admission to this garden is not very expensive, and you don't need to make an appointment or purchase tickets online beforehand. Additionally, there aren't many tourists here, allowing you to enjoy the serene beauty of the garden in peace.

I didn't visit the Humble Administrator's Garden so I can't comment on which one to visit, instead I thought I give some tips from my visit to Liuyuan or Lingering Garden.
It's slightly out of the way as compared to Humble Adminstrator's Garden but it's actually within walking distance from Shantang street which is their old street. I thought Shantang street was pretty nice, similar to Old Town of Lijiang. So from the Shantang metro station, walk South East to the end of Shantang, after that head West to Lingering Gardens.
There's a guided tour (in mandarin) which covers the 3 treasures of Lingering Garden, it's about 15minutes and only takes you to the East side of the garden (i.e., a quarter of the park) so you can backtrack and start all over again.
The route is linear and very easy to navigate, practically taking you on the entirety of the garden.
Jie Bo Ti — Google review
The rock formations are particularly well arranged. As expected, the more popular parts are very crowded, but nonetheless worth seeing. It does feel somewhat austere in the winter and I suspect that the best seasons to visit are spring and summer.
Lion Grove Garden is a classic Chinese garden located in Suzhou, China. It features intricate stone arrangements, a water feature, and an elaborate pavilion. The garden represents the essence of traditional Chinese landscaping with its use of water, stones, plants, and various buildings with literary allusions. This type of garden aims to create an urban scenery that harmonizes man with nature. Lion Grove Garden is one of nine gardens in Suzhou known for their beautiful scenes, elegant buildings, and cultural significance.
It's incredibly beautiful here. The stones are like a rocky maze and there is so much to see since it is a really big garden. There are lots of people here since it's a popular tourist attraction and only cost 40¥ to come in.

One of the stops on our China tour itinerary. First we had 20 minutes presentation about what are the uses and products of silk. Then walked to next building, first floor is a silk museum showing the process of making silk products and display of silk clothing & beddings. 2nd floor is the retail store for selling all kind of silk merchandise. Majority customers are tourists. Price..... a little bit overpriced compared to local shops. 3rd floor, a Chinese restaurant.

Interesting and free! It's not very big and most of the exhibits focus on the type of cloth and patterns popular in each dynasty. I was hoping to see more about the process itself and how it is made, especially in the modern era. But that was just a small portion and nothing showing current methods. Well, there are English subtitles everywhere and it is free, so no complaints.

The Canglang Pavilion (simplified Chinese: 沧浪亭), variously translated as the Great Wave Pavilion, Surging Wave Pavilion, or Blue Wave Pavilion, is one of the Classical Gardens of Suzhou that are jointly recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. it is one of the most famous yuanlin garden in suzhou (one of the four, with zhuo zheng yuan拙政园, shi zi lin狮子林, liu yuan留园)
The Canglang Pavilion was built in 1044 CE(Southern Song Dynasty)
The name is derived from a verse in the poem Fishermen by Qu Yuan (ca. 340 BCE-278 BCE), a poet from the southern state of Chu during the Warring States period, in his book Songs of the South, "If the Canglang River is dirty I wash my muddy feet; If the Canglang River is clean I wash my ribbon"(沧浪之水清兮可以濯我缨,沧浪浊兮可以濯我足). This verse alludes to an honest and upright official who removes himself from politics rather than act in a corrupt manner. Su Shunqing choose this to express his feelings after his removal from office.
the whole yuanlin garden is not as large as zhuo zheng yuan, usually takes just 1 hour to finish one round.
after visiting here it is strongly strongerly strongestly!!!!! RECOMMENDATION to visit the Ke Yuan可园 at the opposite, (preferably at a rainy day but if not that is also ok), that is a little known yuanlin garden but somewhere in my humble opinion better than one of other yuanlin garden in Suzhou
these two garden yuanlin could share the ticket and the price is very modest, and it wouldnt take too long

Decent garden with plenty of history, but from a purely aesthetic perspective it doesn’t stack up to many of the other gardens in Suzhou, including KeYuan which is located across the street. Buying a combined ticket with KeYuan is the way to go, as it makes both gardens more affordable with the discount and it allows you to appreciate the history and the beauty that might be missed if you only saw one of the two

Jinji Lake is a stunning attraction located in the Suzhou Industrial Park area. This picturesque lake offers a change of pace from the historic gardens of Suzhou and spans an impressive 10 square kilometers. The area surrounding the lake features beautiful parks, residential areas, and businesses along a 15 km walkway. Visitors can enjoy various spots around Jinji Lake including cultural exhibitions, shopping areas, leisure spots, urban sightseeing locations, and central waterscapes.
I mostly enjoy walking around the 14 km pedestrian walkway around Jiniji Lake. It's a bit commercialized, but if you walk it late at night, it's peaceful and beautiful. AND...the only public drinking fountain I've found in China!! At least 5 of the spaced around the lake. Don't worry; the water is boiled, put in a holding tank, then pumped to the faucet as you drink from it. :-)

Just one word to completely describe the lake: Breathtaking!
The lake is Huge! And it is very easily reachable by the subway. The stop for the lake is Dongfangzhimen (exit no 4). This is on line 1.
On the station, you can see the sign (english text also available!)
Lake is just outside the exit of the station.
Coming back to lake, it is really huge. It occupies about 7 sq km (info from wiki). The view is amazing. You can just sit along the shore and keep looking at the beauty of the lake for hours! Though there are many things to do along the shore as well. There are couple of islands in this lake, which are reachable by ferry. Then there is theme park. There is small water sports area, children play area, walking track, cycling track.
This is place, where you can go solo, go as couple, go with family or even go with friends..
Kind of a perfect getaway for every occasion.

I love Suzhou because the city is beautiful, the city's canals, stone bridges, pagoda and beautiful gardens. Suzhou is like the Venice of China.
Take the gondola, sailing through a narrow waterway and passing stone bridges. Walking around the canals also is my favorite thing to do.
There are so many lovely and beautiful cafes, bookstores, and souvenir shops. All so artistic and pretty. Feel like step back in time.
Suzhou is also one of the top tourist destinations, so it's not easy to take pictures at the certain landmark and popular sites due to overcrowded.
The Classical Garden of Suzhou were added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1997.
How to get here :I took the high-speed train from Hangqiao Railway station in Shangai, which only took around 30 minutes to reach Suzhou. Alternatively take a coach from West Bus Station, will takes nearly 2 hours.

In this part are the ten principal markets, though besides these there are a vast number of others in the different parts of the town. The former are all squares of half a mile to the side, and along their front passes the main street, which is 40 paces in width, and runs straight from end to end of the city, crossing many bridges of easy and commodious approach. At every four miles of its length comes one of those great squares of 2 miles (as we have mentioned) in compass. So also parallel to this great street, but at the back of the market places, there runs a very large canal, on the bank of which towards the squares are built great houses of stone, in which the merchants from India and other foreign parts store their wares, to be handy for the markets.

Probably the canal makes this garden more unique than other gardens in Suzhou. You can feel actual traces of life in this garden like you have in YiYuan. And never miss the splendid wooden sculpture in the XX pavilion.

You can feel the antiquity of the buildings, and the peacefulness of the garden. The boat ride is a little too short and more information could be provided on the history of the place.

Lovely little garden. More intimate that the bigger gardens in Suzhou, with lots of little rooms, courtyards and paths through stone rookeries where where you can feel peaceful. Signs in English also help you to imagine what it would be like to have lived in the house, when it was occupied.
Also, on a less spiritual and more materialistic note, it is much cheaper than most of the other gardens.

Very nice garden, not a lot of visitors.

Beautiful garden with many different examples and English explanations. Allow about an hour and a half to visit without rushing.

Very nice site. Still have that "ancient atmosphere", feel authentic, unlike some other places where the renovation/commercializations 'spoil' the whole place., at least this how I feel.
Suzhou Higher Hotel Yuguang Matou is a beautiful place surrounded by lush greenery and trees. The hotel's serene environment offers a peaceful retreat for guests looking to immerse themselves in nature.
Suzhou Garden Museum is a must-visit for those who appreciate the art of classical Chinese gardens. With nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Suzhou's gardens are renowned for their representation of the harmony between man and nature. These elegant gardens incorporate rocks, water, trees, plants, and pavilions to create miniature landscapes that embody the yin and yang philosophy.
Must see if you are around, typical architecture and zhejianr garden style. But If you already visit some garden in the area you may thought all look the same!
By the way they have a pretty good collection of magnificent bonsai. Best time to visit is maybe in early spring ~February to see the prunus mune flowers!

The most authoritative garden museum all over the world. The buildings are uniquely designed, bringing out the charm of Suzhou gardens.

Just a 25-minute train ride from the bustle of Shanghai, Suzhou’s quaint canals, draping trees and hanging lanterns are a sure city break. Suzhou’s old-fashioned gardens and Pintan opera shows (an opera sung in Suzhou dialect) are well-toured, but, in this waterside hub also merits lazy afternoons, teahouse visits and, of course, a canal boat ride

Well, I found that I couldn’t understand it (mainly because I need to understand the historical background one by one, but we also have foreground knowledge rrr)

There is a garden demonstration of the Humble Administrator's Garden, and you can enjoy the panoramic view of the Humble Administrator's Garden without paying 90 yuan. If there is a long queue on Sunday, you can go to the Garden Museum. It contains the essence of Suzhou gardens, including construction methods, stone scenes, panjing, festivals, and characteristics of various schools.

Toller Garten der einem den Lifestyle des antiken und modernen Suzhou vermittelt. Leider ist der Garten stark überfüllt. Es gibt kleinere Gärten die nicht weniger schön aber viel leerer sind.
The Panmen Scenic Area East Gate Ticket Office is a renowned site in Suzhou, boasting a rich cultural heritage dating back to 514 BC. The Ruiguang Pagoda within the area holds significant historical and cultural relics, including the Pearl Pillar of the Buddhist Shrine. Notably, it houses the treasured exhibition of Suzhou Museum. The Panmen Gate Tower stands out as the only one with both water and land gates in ancient Suzhou city.
(Translated by Google) Very nice. It is fully worth the cost of the entrance ticket, even if you don't visit the pagoda

Molto bello. Vale appieno il costo del biglietto di ingresso, anche non visitando la pagoda
Pingjiang Lu, located in the eastern part of Suzhou, preserves the ancient charm of the town's canalside roads. While most other canals have been sealed and converted into roads, Pingjiang Lu still has whitewashed local houses that have been converted to guesthouses or trendy cafes. The street provides a glimpse of traditional local life with various side streets branching off from the main path. It is an ideal place for leisurely walks without any rush.
Xuanmiao Temple, also known as the Temple of Mystery, is a significant Taoist place of worship with a history dating back to AD 276. Over the centuries, it has been rebuilt and renamed multiple times. Visitors to Suzhou can easily access this temple along with other nearby attractions such as Lingering Garden, Suzhou Silk Museum, Master of the Nets Garden, Suzhou Museum, Lion Grove Garden and Suzhou Ocean Aquarium.
Love this pedestrain street, no one should miss when visiting Suzhou

Located in the middle of the busiest street in this area, this temple is a good place to relax and pray to the gods. In the park nearby, beware of the women selling "walking tours". Some of the shops around the temple are tourist traps, selling low quality products.
Rodrigo Palma — Google review
Saw a peaceful protest here, something about the county government scamming people out of their savings.
Plain cloth police came out of the crowd and had the protestors surrounded in the middle in a small circle and formed a much larger circle outside to push onlookers away.
I was hoping to see the army and some tanks, quite disappointing.

Amazing old temple in the middle of the incredible city of Suzhou. There is a charge to enter the main building which is strange. The shops around the temple grounds strangely specialise in human hair sales. Weird!

No need to visit, totally under construction at the moment. >_<

Looks very nice... but it's another temple out of many.

Well-preserved. Worth a visit if you drop by the shopping street.
Ruiguang Tower, located in the Panmen Scenic Area of Suzhou, is a magnificent octagonal pagoda with seven floors offering stunning views. Originally built as a Buddhist temple during the Northern Song Dynasty, it has been converted into a Taoist shrine. The tower features intricate carvings and colorful murals on its walls. Surrounding the tower is a large and beautiful scenic area with pagodas, waterways, gardens, and quiet spots for relaxation and personal reflection.
Nice place, very touristic, glad I visited in a period where the flux of people was very low.
Nice trick, the ticket (40 cny) gives you an expandable bonus of 40 cny at the tea house. Don't know if it was a occasional thing or not, but wort to try!
Francesco Pezzato — Google review
The Tower is very nice, and the scenic area in which it can be found is large, beautiful, and not overly crowded. There is a good variety of scenery here, between the large tower, sizeable pagodas, a large lake/pond, a waterfall, numerous gardens, etc. Plenty of good photo opportunities, plenty of things to walk around and see, or if you're just in the mood for some relaxation, plenty of quiet places to unwind. Location isn't ideal as it is pretty far removed from the other main sights of downtown Suzhou, but it is maybe a 1km walk from the nearest metro stop so it really isn't too inconvenient. Either way, this place is absolutely worth the price of admission and I would recommend seeing it if you're in Suzhou for more than one day
Gunnar Caya — Google review
Beautiful temple complex with peaceful waterways weaving their way throughout. Not over crowded, it can be a serene and quiet place for personal reflection. Lush garden scapes that are littered with fabulous examples of ocean rock statues which stand almost as sentinels around. You could easily spend a full day here and not see everything.
William Wright — Google review
Quite a nice place to walk around. Apparently the remains of the old wall. Best to have a tour otherwise most of the places look alien without context.
Joshua Ng — Google review
Usually not crowded, as it is not rated as highly as the other traditional gardens in Suzhou. However, it is a lot more calm and relaxing to walk through the grounds. Quite a large area, with well rebuilt architecture.

Great tower to climb (nice view over old city), even for kids. I walked up with my 5 years old son, i made him believe it was the Tower of "Peacock", the bad guy in Kung Fu Panda 2. :-) Suprisingly there's also a small park and some water around.

Very nice Parc in a center of the very beautiful Chinese city.
The Tiger Hill Park, also known as 虎丘公园, is a spacious and serene tourist attraction that features a picturesque landscaped hill with an aged 1st-century leaning pagoda. The site boasts ponds, wells, a bonsai garden, bamboo groves and unobtrusive single storey buildings that blend harmoniously with the landscape and water features.
There is lots to see! Rich history heritage with beautiful natural scenery. It would be much more enjoyable if visiting in other months than January as it was very chilly especially when you climb up to the top of the hill, despite using a sightseeing vehicle.

This place is quite beautiful. But not much explanations so u might want to follow a guide to learn more. Lots of flowers around. Nice place if u want to take photos. Pack light cause u have to walk alot.

I really enjoyed my visit here, it is very spacious and tranquil. It was a little like entering into one of those traditional Chinese paintings with their buildings, rivers and steep hills. There is a very harmonious combination of landscape, water features and the unobtrusive single storey buildings. The atmosphere is very calm and tranquil so you go leave feeling refreshed. There is a lot to see but it is better to take your time rather than rushing around. The bamboo groves are particularly calming. the site is dominated by the pagoda on the top of the hill which is now looking a little aged although so far it has stood the test of time.

Loved this place so much! It's really big, it takes a lot of time to visit it properly, especially if you like to take your time to take pictures.

Different style from the traditional gardens of Suzhou. This hill is not a garden but rather a series of homes and ancient pavilions as well as a massive Buddhist temple all surrounding the famous Tiger Hill. Very beautiful and possibly the largest of tourist attractions in all of Suzhou.

One he the most renown historical area locates in the downtown of Suzhou. AAAAA rated. Well preserved ancient tower and bridge with a credible history story.
K Joe — Google review
Beautiful, well maintained, historical site; one of the biggest in town. You can spend hours in the gardens and still not finished seeing everything. Views here are distantly breath taking as expected of Suzhou. Huqiu is accessible via public transportation or by the red city tour buses.

Awesome atmosphere. Need to take a bus to reach it, but it's totally worthy, if you happen to be in Suzhou you need to visit this place. Great in spring and during the week when there are not too many turists
