Motsameta Monastery, also called Motsameta complex, is a collection of monasteries situated in the Imereti region, around 6km to the northeast of Kutaisi in Georgia. The monastery, which has an enchanting and peaceful atmosphere, houses the sacred remains of Saints David and Konstantine Mkheidze. It is positioned on a cliff overlooking the Ckalcitela river that flows into Rioni river.
Beautiful location on a hill above the river, a working church. Nice spot to take pictures, I assume it would be that much better seen in a different season rather than winter. Old 11th century church.

The motsameta is located at the end of a mountain ridge, which is why you have a pretty good view from there in several directions and can overlook large areas of land and landscapes. The best way to get to the church is on foot if you have parked at the adjacent parking lot. For this you have to cross a platform that is almost never used. You can reach the church via a small wooden bridge, which is beautifully medieval. The church itself is very typical Georgian and is freely accessible.

Nestled amidst the lush greenery near Kutaisi, Georgia, Motsameta Monastery (also known as Motsameta Monastery Complex) beckons with its historic charm and picturesque setting. This architectural marvel, dating back to the 11th century, offers a captivating blend of religious significance, natural beauty, and local legend.
The monastery's name translates to "Place of the Martyrs," a poignant reminder of its origins. Legend tells of the brothers David and Constantine Mkheidze, who led a rebellion against Arab invaders in the 8th century and were martyred on this very spot. King Bagrat III later commissioned the construction of the present-day monastery complex in their honor.
Motsameta Monastery is a functioning monastery with free entry. Dress modestly, especially if attending a religious service. The monastery is located about 6 kilometers from Kutaisi and is accessible by car or taxi.
Whether you're a history buff seeking a glimpse into Georgia's past, a nature enthusiast yearning for a tranquil escape, or simply someone curious about local legends, Motsameta Monastery offers a unique and rewarding experience.

Beautiful monastery, a lovely atmosphere and high level atmosphere. Motsameta also known as Motsameta monastery is a complex of monasteries at the Imereti region, approximately 6 km northeast of the center of Kutaisi, Georgia. The monastery is picturesquely located on the cliff of a promontory in the curve of the Ckalcitela river, a tributary of the Rioni river.

Absolutely lovely place. Stunning views. The secluded location provides amazing experience - it's like travelling in time.
In my opinion, it's worth visiting much more than the Gelati monastery.

The monastery is beautiful, but we managed to go down to the mountain river, and both the way and the water were so magical, Narnia-like experience 🥰

Honestly my favorite monastery around Kutaisi, neither the cathedral in the city nor Gelati I liked as much as this tiny castle-like monastery. Interiors are poorer, true, but the whole setting of this isolated fortress above a river curling around it just made a nice impression on me. Free entrance, short walk from the main road or taxi accessible from Kutaisi.

Peaceful place in the middle of Imeretian mountains. 8th century monastery is still functioning. History of this place talks about 2 kings from this period who's remains are inside. Very well management and maintained. Views on canyon and river are just outstanding. Great place for meditation or a prayer 🙏

Wonderful monastery, 10min away by car from Kutaisi. Parking is 200m away from the complex. There was a ceremony inside the church, so I could not get inside. Outside was just splendid. Views of the river gorge are spectacular.
The Okatse Canyon Visitor Centre is a hub for tourists seeking to explore the picturesque Okatse Canyon in Georgia. This area boasts suspended boardwalks that offer stunning views of a lush river canyon, complete with waterfalls and cliffs. Visitors can choose between visiting the Gelati Monastery and the Prometheus Underground Cave, both UNESCO Heritage sites or exploring the Sky Walk-like bridge above the canyon at Okatse Canyon.
We had a foggy weather so it was touch and go whether the site would be open. But we got lucky.
There's a long metal walkway hung high up the cliff, from which you cab look straight down into the abyss. At the end there's a hanging balcony with great views
Many stairs down to the walkway as well as back up.
To return to the entrance you need to climb quite a few stairs to get to a walkway which leads back.
This hanging walkway is not for people with fear of heights.

An amazing natural attraction to spend time there. From the tickets office tu walk for 3 km through incredible forest till you reach the cliff terrace, then you walk on the terrace till the view point , and you exit the terrace from different spot. You need to walk back till the tickets office from the same path through the forest. Don’t forget to eat the wild blueberry on the way.

What a beautiful place! During spring, when the foliage is still developing, this place is definitely stunning. A few tips to make your visit as pleasant as possible:
- don’t bother taling the (overpriced) 4x4 vehicles if you can walk. It’s a beautiful walk towards the canyon from the visitor centre. 2,5km each way over a hardened path
- think twice before walking the canyon path if you suffer from vertigo. It’s *really* deep and the floor of the path co dists of metal grates. There is no way to avoid the sensation of depth.
- Make sure to bring enoygh water. It can get quite hot and parts of the trail from the visitor centre to the canyon are quite steep
Nicolas — Google review
The trail is good and totally worth to visit. Beautiful forest and nice views. You should definitely walk it as your way to canyon itself will only take 20 minutes by foot through spectacular scenery of nature. Some locals near entrance will try to scam you to pay 100 GEL to drive you through "3 hours road" which is actually not true and they only want your money.
Ilya Lebedev — Google review
Location is nice no doubt , especially for them who living in metro cities. They can enjoy the nature .
But the way is so long if you walking with family or kids or next option you can hire a driver to take you there 100 GEL return charges .
AAR R Music — Google review
It simply does not worth visiting.
You cannot drive to the canyon from the visitor centre with a regular 4x4 SUV, you need narrow and high 4x4 with all terrain tires and special offroad driving skills. Also no road signs at all on purpuse, to make you use taxi. The offer starts at 150 lari for 4 people to the canyon and back, that is ridiculously expensive. You can get it for 80 lari if you bargain.
The canyon road goes above the crown of the trees, might be problematic for people having fear of hights. After many steps up and down in the very humid environment, you will see great depth in the canyon under you, but mostly trees everywhere on the hills, often blocking the view. You can barely see the river. It is nice but it is no more special than the beautiful forests and hills throughout the country for free.
It simply does not worth for the time and money. Instead of the Okatse canyon I recomment Kinchkha waterfall and the Martvili Canyon with boat trip, both are incredibly beautiful and worth every single lari!

Breathtaking view with unique see through Canyon pathway. Be ready to do some cardio though. If you get tired on the way back they offer ride for 60gel u can negotiate.
Ocool Toshqulov — Google review
A must see while you are in Georgia. There are two ways to get to the top. First one is to walk around 2-3 km. The second is to take the car ride offered by the locals.
The local drivers say its offroad and charge you want to charge you around 100 lari. Do haggle with them because the drive isn't worth 100 lari, 50 lari should be more than enough. Negotiate the price before you get in the car because at the beginning the will say if you don't like the ride then you can pay less, but after the ride when you start negotiating they say that they never said anything like that (typical tourist trap). This was my case.
At the canyon you walk through a steel construction which is mounted on the side of the mountain. The views are beautiful and mesmerising. The walk is around 1-2km. If you are an adrenaline junkie you'll definitely love it. The floor on the construction is see through so you can really se how Hugh you are. Awesome feeling.

Mind-blowing views. One of the best places I ever visited in my life
From The Visitor Centre where you buy the ticket, you either walk down to the main entrance which is like 2.5km or you take a jeep for like 80 GEL. Both are nice experiences, I’d suggest you take the jeep. Once you arrived at the main entrance, you have like 2500 steps to get to the canyon. It’s an incredible walk and views. Every moment was awesome.
Since you are there, I'd highly recommend checking out Okatse lake and Okatse Waterfall. There are just like 15m drive from the visitor center. you could arrange it with the jeep/tour for another 40-50 GEL

Canyon is beautiful, entrance is 17,5 lari, which you can pay by card or in cash at the visitors center or only by card upstairs near the entrance.
I have a fear of highness, but I have managed it quite well. Although the walkway with mesh floor is not what I would prefer :)
There are a lot of drivers at the entrance who supply their services to drive you to the entrance of the canyon - it's actually 1,5km long nice walk, which is comfortable for any person, including seniors and kids.
We spent 3,5 hours and gone cca 5km in general with my 70 years old parents.
Trip from Kutaisi to canyon: 34 lari by maxim, unfortunately there is no possibility to order car by Bolt or maxim from the canyon.
Trip from canyon to Kutaisi: 75 lari by taxi, who was standing near the visitor center (starting price was 100 lari)

Amazing Amazing Amazing dazzling spot that you must visit. We were in batumi so it was around 3 hours drive to reach it!
Once you are there there is 2 options you either ho by 4x4 cars or you walk through the forest! Me and my friend went through the forset because we love nature but it's a long walk and you need to wear something comfortable (and ladies you can wear skirts or dresses for nice pictures as long as they are comfortable and light because it's hot!)
But definitely wear something comfortable in your feet 👟
Take so much water and snacks to eat at the end of the bridge before you exit!
Oraib Al Tellawi — Google review
I do not recommend visiting this “canyon” as there isn’t much to see aside from a small river and a forest. The suspension bridge is terrifying. They should have a sign that you shouldn’t go if you’re scared of heights - I didn’t know about this walk in advance and I almost had a panic attack when walking there. I just wasn’t impressed by the whole thing. The walk to the canyon is nice though and it only takes about 30 minutes.
Eva Meglič — Google review
This is a review of the suspended bridge only. As a foreigner you pay 17.5 GEL as of October 2023. The length of this metal trail is around 1.5 km. You really don't see much of the river in the canyon except at the end. Yes there are a few nice perspectives but that's it. The only scenic spot is the viewpoint but don't expect a terrific selfie from there. I think paying 17.5 GEL for that is not worth it. Actually i enjoyed more the walk in the park before reaching the entry of the metal trail. Also, from the parking located next to the office you can see numerous folks with 4x4 that propose you ridiculous fees for driving you to the entry. It's overpriced but if you have difficulties to walk it could be an option to get there. The paved path from the office to the entry of the metal bridge is around 2 kilometers long. I did it in 30 minutes. No way you need 3 hours or you are napping next to the cows in between ;). The ladies at the office are doing their job, no more. A smile would be welcome. Another tip, there is a path to the water. Feel free to reach me out to know about it. No point mentioning this to everyone. We still saw People littering along the nature path. This is unacceptable. A sign should be put "do not litter".

The caves are really beautiful and a great way to spend time in nature. The air in the caves is so fresh and pure that I felt really refreshed afterwards! A lot of effort has been put in to lighting the stalactites and stalagmites and there is also music that plays towards the end of the tour, which I found to be really magical. There are many stairs to walk up and down so this would not be a good place to visit for anyone with mobility issues. I found the guide very difficult to hear as she was not wearing a microphone and we had a really large group, so it was a pity that I was unable to learn anything about the caves. Highly recommended visiting this place.

A nice spot to visit, and some advice to all buy tickets to the boat from outside because they don't sell it inside! We had a tour guide who drove us but did not tell us about the tickets thing! So we only went in the cave by foot! Moreover, they start tours with a huge number of people, so you can't hear the tour guide at all because of the VERY long line during walking inside the Cave!
There was a lights show however we also missed it because there were too many people and we weren't at the beginning of the line!
So the management should either make the groups smaller or let people go on their own!!

More than 5 million years old cave. It takes 100 years to build 1CM of mineral deposit. It is a spectacular natural monument renowned for its stunning underground landscapes. One of the popular tourist attraction in Kutaisi. It features a labyrinth of stalactites, stalagmites, curtains, and petrified waterfalls, creating a mesmerizing and otherworldly environment.
We explored various chambers within the cave, each named for its distinct geological formations. The cave’s pathways wind through illuminated sections, highlighting the intricate beauty of the mineral formations. Additionally, an underground river flows through part of the cave, adding to its allure.
Prometheus Cave is not only a geological wonder but also holds cultural significance. Its name is inspired by the mythological figure Prometheus, symbolizing the creative forces of nature. The Gelati Monastery, located in a picturesque wooded hillside 8km northeast of Kutaisi, is a renowned medieval monastery complex in Georgia. It served as an academy with renowned scholars during the country's 'golden age' and was the final resting place for numerous Georgian rulers, including King David the Builder. The Cathedral of the Virgin within the complex boasts some of Georgia's most colourful frescoes, making it a popular attraction under UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Gelati was not simply a monastery: it was also a centre of science and education, and the Academy established there was one of the most important centres of culture in ancient Georgia. King David gathered eminent intellectuals to his Academy such as Johannes Petritzi, a Neo-Platonic philosopher best known for his translations of Proclus, and Arsen Ikaltoeli, a learned monk, whose translations of doctrinal and polemical works were compiled into his Dogmatikon, or book of teachings, influenced by Aristotelianism. Gelati also had a scriptorium were monastic scribes copied manuscripts (although its location is not known). Among several books created there, the best known is an amply illuminated 12th century gospel, housed in the National Centre of Manuscripts.

Nestled near Kutaisi in western Georgia, Gelati Monastery (Gelati Monastery and Academy) stands as a testament to the country's rich history and cultural heritage. Founded in the 11th century by King David the Builder, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is not just a stunning architectural complex, but also a former educational center that played a pivotal role in the Georgian Golden Age.
Gelati Monastery exemplifies the architectural style of the Golden Age, characterized by balanced proportions, smooth stonework, and decorative blind arches. The complex comprises several buildings, each contributing to its visual grandeur. The imposing Cathedral of the Virgin Mary, with its central dome and elaborate facade, is a masterpiece in itself.
Gelati Monastery is open to the public with an entrance fee. Dress modestly, particularly if visiting during a religious service. The monastery is easily accessible from Kutaisi by car, taxi, or public transportation.
A visit to Gelati Monastery is a rewarding experience for any traveler. It's a place to appreciate architectural beauty, delve into Georgia's rich history, and marvel at the artistic legacy of a bygone era.

It's been under construction for a year or so, which I understand is a good thing but it slightly ruins the experience when you walk in the church and instead of beautiful frescoes you are looking at a construction site. Bagrati Cathedral, located on Ukimerioni Hill in Kutaisi, was originally built during the reign of Bagrat III in the 1000s. Over centuries, it suffered damage and ruin due to various causes including a Turkish explosion in 1692 that brought down its drum, dome and ceiling. However, between 2009 and 2012 the cathedral underwent a complete renovation using both old and new stone as well as some steel sections.
Such a beautiful cathedral situated a little higher from the city.. If you are planning to visit the city I would definitely recommend going here and offering prayers here.. Also do check out around outside of the cathedral as it has a really nice view of the city from above and there are some nice views to maybe click a picture or two 😉
We visited during May and it was raining here which was a bonus for us as the view was just stunning. Peace ✌🏻

Bagrati Cathedral was built in the 11th century, by king Bagrati the third as a symbol of the unification of Georgia. The cathedral looks over the city. From the mountain Ukimerioni, where it stands, one can observe almost the whole Kutaisi. According to narration, King David the Builder, the mightiest king of Georgia, was crowned exactly under its dome.

Over-restored? The Cathedral of the Dormition, better known as the Bagrati Cathedral, was built on Ukimerioni Hill in 1003 at the instigation of King Bagrat III and is considered one of the most important examples of the golden age of Georgian church architecture. After Turkish troops partially blew up the church in 1692, it remained in ruins until the 21st century. Although the first works started in the 1950s, the church was only thoroughly restored between 2009 and 2014. UNESCO in particular was not happy with the way this restoration was carried out and removed the cathedral from the World Heritage List in 2017, after only 23 years. Nevertheless, the Bagrati Cathedral is one of Georgia's most famous churches and is worth a visit, if only for the view of Kutaisi.

Nice cathedral in kutaisi with lovely views of the city and an old fortress as boundary walls .inside there is a very peaceful and calm atmosphere to offer prayers. Even when it's warm outside you have cool winds blowing inside the church.
At the heart of Kutaisi's main square, there stands an exquisite fountain adorned with golden animal statues and replicas of ancient Georgian figures. The fountain showcases enlarged models of archaeological artifacts found all throughout Georgia, including the famous bronze sculpture Tamada from the 7th century BC. The centerpiece of the fountain is a stunning model of ancient goldsmithery in the form of a woman's temple jewelry.
Kutaisi downtown is very warming and lovely places around the fountain which are all close to it.
Very beautiful place for chill and walk around downtown.
Must visit while in Kutaisi

Beautiful and well maintained fountain. However surrounded by a massive traffic roundabout. Seems like a waste of space and a shame that pedestrians can’t hangout here peacefully and safely.

I loved this place. May be because i visited in mild winters so I loved spending time around the fountain and its gardens.
The palace has many restaurants nearby and some budget friendly eatries too. Ot has super market, McDonald's and dunkins as well.
On another side of fountain it has shopping mall, movie theaters and opera house. I visited Opera but I guess was not open.
Anyway, I would say it is wonderful trip here.

The Colchis Fountain is very beautiful at night. The Colchis Fountain is a monument in the central square of Kutaisi in Georgia that celebrates the ancient kingdom of Colchis. It is adorned with 30 large-scale copies of the famous gold jewelry discovered at archaeological sites in Georgia, including the nereby Vani. The fountain was opened in May 2012.

In the middle of the city, on its main square stands an interesting fountain. It is decorated with enlarged models of archaeological artifacts found on the whole territory of Georgia. For example, the famous bronze sculpture “Tamada”, which dates back to the 7th century BC. In the Georgian language, “Tamada” means a leader of the “supra” feast table who proposes toasts. The main figure of the fountain represents a woman’s temple jewelry _ a magnificent model of antic time goldsmithery. Very interesting place.

I think it is one of the most eye-catching sites in Kutaisi. Gorgeous fountain with golden status located in a wide square in the city. You must use a wide angle lens to capture all of it in one frame, as it's surrounded by the streets and you can't stand in a proper distance from it.
Omar Killawi — Google review
Colchis Fountain is located in the center of the city, it’s a great place to just visit and take a few photos, around this area you can get a lot of restaurants both local and international.
The place is generally very safe for tourists. The fountains are located in the centre of a traffic roundabout so great caution is needed when approaching the fountains though most drivers are well aware of the surroundings due to tourists and locals constantly crossing the road approach the fountains.
The fountains are open 24 hours and no tickets needed it is free of charge.
Exercise some caution when visiting the fountains in the rain season, the pavement is a bit sloppy so don’t wear slippery shoes hence you might fall however it is very safe i went there in the rain but my shoes were ok.
Below Ive included a few photos and videos i took on my visit

Mythical! In the heart of Kutaisi, David Agmashenebeli Square is home to the Colchis Fountain, a tribute to one of the oldest Georgian kingdoms, and (of course) indirectly also to the myth of the Golden Fleece. An iconic eye-catcher.

David Agmashenebeli Avenue is a prominent street in Tbilisi, Georgia that features ornate architecture and historical significance. The avenue was named after King David IV of Georgia, who played a significant role in the country's history during the 12th century. The area is known for its vibrant atmosphere with numerous shops, cafes, and restaurants lining the streets. Visitors can also enjoy various cultural landmarks such as museums, galleries, and theaters scattered throughout the neighborhood.
Sataplia Nature Reserve spans 330 hectares and is home to woodlands, karst caverns, and dinosaur imprints. Visitors from abroad are required to pay a fee of 17.5 lari for entry. As for the cave system: Loved it! Was a first time experience for something like this. When seeing the entrance of the cave it gave me Jurassic Park vibes, and after stepping inside I was awed at how beautiful the stalactites and stalagmites were! (Yes, I did shout "And they call it a mine! A mine!" line. And it was magical!)

Good place to visit at any time of the year. However, you can not explore the cave itself without a group tour. It was at 12 on Saturday, but I am not sure the schedule on other week days. The price for a tourist is around 6 euro, while for Georgian citizens/ residents 2,5 only. The entrance to the park is free. The glass bridge has an amazing view point. It looks quite creepy , yet safe. The trees looked magical even in December - the most unpleasant season for nature in places with no snow. If you like hiking, walk around 3 km back from the park towards Kutaisi, and you can easily get to Kutaisi on minibus number 4 for just 10 minutes. Bolt took us to Sataplia from Pushkin street for only 11 lari, which around 4 euro.

A nice place that offers paleontological history of the area and roes through a beautiful caving experience.
The visit must be accompanies by a guide and the place has English guided tours but not all tours. So, either you rely on your luck , just we did, or wait for the English tour.
There are several benches and a convenience store to help you wait
The paleontological aspects are mostly about dinosaurs, believe or do not believe it is your say.
Bear in mind the cave entrance is suddenly emitting cold wind, so it is up to you to bring a coat or warm clothes for the cave experience.
Do not forget to shoot amazing pictures

Moreover we paid 17.25 lar as foreigners but our guide couldn't speak English, just Russian... and i had to translate everything to my friend... a bit strange to be honest
Also they didn't permit us to visit dini's footprint "because of reconstruction " but we were lucky and door was open and without guardians, without it i would be extra disappointed !

Historical Museum Restaurant Kutaisi City Center. Nice little place in Kutaisi Georgia, food was good and reasonably priced.
The service of the premises were young and vibrant though lacked the experience of trained staff in the service business… My beer was served in a chipped glass, my main course was served in two different orders and wasn’t cooked very well. The sausage meat was dry and poorly served, therefore it unbalanced my meal and started to frustrated me. Needs some care in the food preparation and passion but Still potential for growth and service.

This is an excellent local history museum telling the story of Kutaisi from the earliest recorded geological evidence going through the millennia of human settlements and down to our age, it stops somewhere in the 19th century
The best part of the exhibit is the collection of religious items in the main room some dating back to the 10th century, there are English texts for all the items in the museum and the entrance at 5GEL is quite reasonable for what you get to see

It's basically 2 rooms... and that's all. The rest of the building is off limits. The artifacts are quite diverse and well represented, and I'd happily stop by such a tiny snack box of history for free. But it's not free (5 GEL)... and that's what kills it for me.

There is also a model house interior with olden type furnitures.
